Hello and welcome to the AFC Donscast, your weekly Red Army
update bringing you everything Aberdeen FC, Aberdeen Women and
the wider Scottish game. I'm Graeme and on this week's
show we'll have reaction to Aberdeen's league cat win and
build up to a huge Europa Leagueplayoff first leg at Pittodrie
this Thursday. We'll bring the transfer news
with Keenan Bilalovich confirmedand Marco Lozitic close to
signing, plus rumours surrounding Bowie, Miovski and

(00:26):
Slobbed and Rubisic. But also round up all the
weekend action from the ScottishLeague, League One, League 2 and
the Highland League and check inon the women's team as they
start their new season. Plus we have the draw for the
quarterfinals of the league cap.Plenty to cover.
So let's get straight into it, because you ain't got to tell.
Me, it's just. Hello, it's Graham here and

(01:56):
welcome to the show. We have a brief respite from
league martyrs over the next couple of weeks, with the league
cap on the agenda yesterday and the first leg of our UEFA Europa
League playoff tie against FCSB this Thursday.
So let's start with the league cap.
The manager spoke to the press ahead of the match.
What we are trying to achieve here is this competitive side in
the team to be talk about beforethe the consistency of the of

(02:18):
the team and we have a journey to do there and we are still on
this this track and I think we are improving.
I know we didn't win this first two games, but small things
performance, but we have to do better.
I think that's the key for us tobe strong all this season.
We're looking forward to all these games and, and again to,

(02:43):
to grow as a person and as a player is the best way to take
responsibility and enjoy to be, to have take responsibility, to
have a responsibility when you play for, for this club and try
to find this way to, to show it on the pitch and, and prepare.
And that's my job with my staff to to guide the players in this
direction. Aberdeen are safely through to

(03:06):
the quarterfinals of the Scottish League cap after a
commanding 3 nil win over Greenock Morton at Capilo.
We showed no hangover from Sandys defeat to Celtic, with
three changes to the lineup and Gavin Malloy marking as 100th
career start. The opener came on 32 minutes
when skipper Seibert Hilton and Nielsen powered home a header
from Adilashisha's corner, his first goal for the club. 5

(03:26):
minutes later Cassini Yenge dabbled the lead, tapping in
after good work from Morris and Milanovic.
Aberdeen managed the second-halfwith real control and wrapped
things up in style on 78 minutes, Leyton Clarkson
chipping a sublime finish beyondthe Morton keeper for three nil.
The Dons were never troubled andnow March into the last eight of
the competition with confidence restored.

(03:47):
Jimmy safely through the next round of the League Cup.
Very professional performance this year.
Thoughts in the game? No, first of all, I'm happy with
that because you have a lot of sport to see travelling down
today and watch us play and it'salways important for our players
to give 100% and try to make a good performance and and they
serve the result and I think they did today.
It's I'm really happy we we're through to the next round and

(04:09):
and we can celebrate with our sports again.
Jimmy, some Cup records you've got, I think that's your 13th
Cup game. You've won 12 games, only one
defeat so and and this again is a competition we want to do well
and isn't it? Yeah, I think it always we, we
are a big club. We want to be competitive in all
the the tournaments in the cups,in the in Europe and in the
league. So it's just to have this

(04:31):
capacity to recover and perform again and and be consistent.
And that's what we're working on.
And I'm happy that we could do something a little bit better
today with the the way we arrived to the Ponies box and
and control the transitions. And it's a small, small progress
every week and just keep going, working that way I was.
Going to ask, I mean what what we what pleased you most today?

(04:51):
Maybe what it is still need to work on?
First of all, it's good to see all the supporters here.
It's like the support is always strong.
And then again, some players taking some steps and they find
more rhythm together. I think Yankee takes some steps
today with his connection with the teammates.
I think the rest of the team arrived with more balls into the

(05:12):
box to get more opportunities. So overall and also in the end
when we get some cramp and some players and we and the players
quick adapt to new positions andtake and take responsibility for
the result in a good way. So a few players coming off
Jimmy, is there any concerns ahead of the game on Thursday
night? I don't think so.
Let's see. But the first report is is not a

(05:33):
big thing. So I'm I'm.
I think it's fine. Start to gain very, very
strongly. The intensity was very good.
I mean, was that one of the message to the players?
Yeah, we have worked really hardnow on our way of our attacking
parts and the connections because if you think the the
first league games has been OK, performance not the result we
want, but we haven't arrived enough.

(05:55):
When we have the ball, we have the timing hasn't really been
there. So we worked a lot on the timing
and I think some parts were better today.
You mentioned the end game. I'm so pleased for him with his
goal and you know, absolutely. And I thought he played well and
you could see the the confidencehe got from the goal as well.
No, I think again, it's it's a team sport, everybody knows
that, but sometimes we forget about that and it's important to

(06:15):
have this relation on the pitch. So try to get the timing better
and better. And when the timing is there is
easier to play football. So and of course the goal was
really it's always nice when you're a striker or a winger or
#10 to score the goals. But it's also the the timing.
I think it he linked better withthe teammates and then then

(06:37):
understand it's better. So I think it's again the the
collective part is is growing and then also the individuals
look better. And the goal actually comes
about. I thought Gavin Malloy did
really well to win the ball. You know, that set set the move
up. But Gav I thought came in since
his first start since January. He's obviously a long time out.
I think played really well. What was the thinking today
playing that left back? I think he's a good left foot

(06:58):
and and we have some injuries there so we want to prepare more
players. We know it's going to be a lot
of games now in front of us so we need a squad who's ready and
he has done well now in the training sessions and he's
worked so hard with his injuriesand it's good to see him to play
play today and prepare himself for the the the game time and

(07:20):
and the ready. One player I was also going to
mention was Jack Milton. Obviously Matt's not.
There is maybe more responsible responsibility on him more, you
know, as as a leader as well. And I thought he's done really,
really well last couple of games.
Again, the the way they train isthe most important thing.
How they focus on the training sessions, that's the that's how
they grow. They they improving.

(07:42):
And then the context of the gameis important to be consistency,
the the capacity to always stay focused.
And I think Jack has done a lot of progress this pre season and
now in the league. He's I think every game he's
looked calmer and more better inpositioning and and look better
and better. He must be pleased as well as
Subs as well who came on and made an impact.

(08:03):
It's going to be very much a squad game this season with a
number of games. Yeah, and also the reaction when
you don't start the game and youyou come into the pitch, they
know now it's a strong competition inside the squad and
you have to use your opportunityon the pitch in a really good
way. And that the team spirit, how
they take responsibility and thegoals to score the transition

(08:23):
was really good. And also responsibility when we
were take out Jack and they how they adapt to new positions and
take responsibility. And I think that's a healthy
competition because we know it'sgoing to be a lot of games and
we need a strong squad. That's what it means to be in
Aberdeen. You sometimes you will play,
sometimes you will not play, butyou always have to contribute
with everything you have. Sets up very nicely for

(08:44):
Thursday. You're going to be your first
taste of European experience at Patoria.
How much you looking forward? To a lot I haven't thank you so
much about it yet. Because of this game, I think
you have to take game by game. Every competition is important,
but Krista was there now in Kosovo and watched the game and
and analysts have done a good job with preparations.
So tomorrow we're going to focuson this game and we look forward
to that. It's going to be an icing.

(09:06):
And just finally, Jimmy, the transfer window, I know you're
getting asked about this, but let's just say there's a lot
going on, isn't there? And there's a plan in place.
And, and sometimes it takes a while for all the pieces to fall
into place. But I think it's important that
people judge us at the end of the transfer window.
Certainly a lot going to happen in the next couple of weeks.
I think we were. We have to take care of
everyone, the players with game time and some place.

(09:29):
Let's see, you're going to be maybe moments in and out and
just do the best for Aberdeen and also the best for the
players so to get the game time they need.
So let's see how it plans out. Jimmy jumped on today.
Well done. Thank you much.
Thank you so much. Thank you.

(10:12):
We've completed our 8th signing of the summer with the arrival
of Swedish youth international Keenan Bilalovich.
The 20 year old winger joins from IFK Vernamu on A5 year
contract subject to international clearance and visa
formalities. The left sided winger, whose
family are originally from Bosnia, has spent the last three
years with IFK Vernamu and ate the last season alone to shove
to IACO. It feels really good.

(10:36):
I'm really excited to meet all the players, I meet the staff
and I have a really good first impression and I can't wait to
get out in the arena, play in front of the fans too.
I think that I am a player that runs a lot and fights for the
team, so I think that suits the Aberdeen team well.

(10:59):
So I think it's most of that andthat then my individual
qualities too. I think it's a really good
chance for me to show up my skills and levels and it's a
team that's quite direct and want to press high and or have a
lot of tempo in the game. So I think it suits me really

(11:20):
good and that I can show off. We're closing in on another
major signing with Serbian forward Marco Lazatich just one
step away from completing his move to Pittodrie.
The 21 year old was expected to arrive in Scotland yesterday
ahead of medical tests. Goes according to plan.
He will then put pen to paper onhis Aberdeen contract.

(11:41):
The deal has been in the works since late July but some delays
stalled the process. However, everything appears to
be resolved and Lazatich is set to make the switch.
AC Milan have agreed to let the striker leave on a permanent
basis with no transfer fee involved.
Instead, they have inserted a future resale clause of APP to
50%, a familiar formula they've used in other recent deals.
Lots of struggle to make an impact during his time at the

(12:03):
San Siro, but Milans management are still hopeful of recouping
some of their investment furtherdown the line.
For Aberdeen, it's another bold move in the transfer market as
we continue to strengthen the squad for the season ahead.
Former Aberdeen striker Boyan Miowski could be on the move
again just a year after joining Girona from Pittodrie.
The North Macedonian international arrived in Spain
last summer for a fee of around £6.8 million, but his first

(12:26):
season in La Liga proved a difficult 1.
He managed only four goals and 22 appearances across all
competitions and his struggles continued on opening night last
Friday, starting against Rio Valacano but withdrawn at half
time after Girona went down to 10 men and trailed 2 nil.
Now Spanish Sports News outlets are reporting that Mayowski has
emerged as a target for Valencia.

(12:46):
The six time La Liga winners aresaid to be keen on a loan move
as a cheaper alternative to other striking options such as
Kyle Lawren and former Rangers forward Umar Sadiq.
Jerona, meanwhile, are thought to be open to either a loan or
permanent deal. Speaking back in July, Myoski
himself didn't rule out the departure and even hinted at a
possible return to Pitaudry in the years to come.
He said he still holds a deep affection for Aberdeen and that

(13:09):
if he were to come back one day, lifting a trophy with the Dawns
would be his number one ambition.
For now, the future remains in the balance with Valencia
pushing to strike a deal before the transfer window closes.
Rumours abound that Corona Kelchi have agreed a deal to
sign Don's centre back Slobber and Rubysech, with the 25 year
old Montenegro international dueto arrive in Poland on Monday

(13:30):
for America after being deemed surplus to requirements by
Yamatili. More Don's news straight after
this. Big Brother returns this autumn

(13:59):
on ITV. 2. And ITVX.
OK, let's look at the rest of the matches from across the
weekend. And Celtic are the first team
through to the quarterfinals of the Scottish League cap.
Thanks Jeff. 41 victory over Falkirk at Parkhead on Friday
night. In the other cap games on
Saturday, St. Mirren knock Hearts out of the
cap, winning five fold on penalties after it finished one

(14:20):
nil in Paisley, Partick Thistle defeated Area United 2 nil at
Fairhill, Manuel beat St. Johnstone one nil after extra
time at McDermott Park, while Rangers were 4/2 winners against
Aloe Athletica Ibrox in the lategame.
There was another busy afternoonacross Scottish League One and
League 2 with plenty of drama and goals to talk about.
In League 1, Cove Rangers and Montreux served up a six goal

(14:41):
thriller in the Granite City, the match ending 3 all at the
Balmodel Stadium. E 5 claimed a fine away win,
etching out Hamilton Aki's 21 atNew Douglas Park, Inverness.
Cali Thistle's test start to life in the third tier continued
as they fell 21 at home to Stenhouse Muir.
The scheduled class between Kelty Hearts and Aloe Athletic
was postponed. Meanwhile, Queen of the South
were in commanding form at Palmerston, bumping Peterhead 4

(15:04):
nil. Over in League 2, the Spartans
continued their strong showing with a three one victory away at
Clyde. Dumbarton and Elgin City shared
the points in A1 all draw. East Kilbride impressed again,
beating Stranraer three one at Kay Park.
Edinburgh City and Anan Athleticcouldn't be separated, they're
meeting finished two all A4 for Athletics Track 4 at Station
Park, coming out four two winners over Sterling Albion.

(15:26):
It was a big afternoon of actionacross the Highland League with
plenty of goals and a few stalemates to report.
Ugly Park. Bricca City put on a statement
performance thumping Becky Thistle 5 nil where Rangers were
also in fine form running out three one winners over near In
County and Sutherland. But Lamarie Wick Academy picked
up a valuable away win defeatingForest Mechanics 2 nil at Moss.
At Park there was drama at Bailesley Park where Fraser Brat

(15:48):
and Inverurie Local shared the points in A2 all draw while over
at Christie Park it ended goalless between Huntley and
Tariff United. It was a disappointing day for
Keith who failed to 2A2 nil homedefeat at the hands of
Parthekatten, but there was alsono breakthrough in Lost Your
Mouth with the Coasters and for Martin United playing out a nil
nil stalemate. Rothus and Banksidi also

(16:08):
couldn't be separated at their class, finishing two all at
McKesson Park. But one of the stand out results
came in Granting where Strasbie Thistle recorded a superb 3 nil
victory over Devonvale, delighting the home support on
Sunday In the league cap Brad Lyons scored the winner as
Kilmarnock defeated Dundee United 21 at Rugby Park and Josh
Malagan netted the clincher witha superb goal in Hibs 2 nil win

(16:30):
over Livingston in West Lothia. The mother of all.

(17:08):
Reunions. EastEnders.
OK, it's news time now and earlier this week at Balmore
Stadium, experience proved the difference as Peterhead edged
out Aberdeen youngsters in our opening KDM Evolution Trophy
tie. The home side strike first
through a Jamie Mercer own goal before Oliver Colotti made it
amends for an earlier penalty miss by doubling their

(17:29):
advantage. After the break.
The Yang Dons came roaring back,Jack Searle pulling one back
before setting up Tristan Stephen for the equaliser.
Just as it looked like Stewart Dash said might turn the game on
its head, former Paducherie favourite Now McGinn rolled
Peterhead back in front and Kayla Shanks sealed it with a
tidy finish late on. Despite A spirited fight back
and some encouraging performances, the Dolan's

(17:49):
development squad went and done by the Greater Knights of their
senior opponents. Final score at Balmer.
Peterhead 4 Aberdeen 2. Aberdeen have announced a brand
new partnership with local firm Parked App, who became the
club's official March the corporate gifting partner.
The collaboration strengthens the bond between the Dawns and
the Aberdeen based provider of innovative packaging solutions
and promotional merchandise. Parked App have been long time

(18:11):
supporters of the club behind the scenes and this new deal
takes that relationship to the next level.
As part of the agreement, ParkedApp will supply an all Aberdeen
A boxes and packaging for supporters, with the club
choosing to move to a local supply, a decision that
underlines Aberdeen's commitmentto parking and nurturing
businesses in the region. In addition, all corporate
gifting for hospitality guests will now come from Parked Up

(18:34):
with their branding sex feature prominently within Pittodry.
Scottish cap hero Alfie Dorrington has admitted he
hasn't seen his winner's medal since that famous Hamden triumph
back in May and jokes he just hopes it doesn't end up on eBay.
The on loan Tottenham Hotspur defender was part of the Dawn
side that stands Celtic on penalties to end the wait for
silverware. Now back for the second spell

(18:54):
under Yami Talin and Dorrington is eyeing more cap glory.
The 20 year old revealed he handed the medal straight to his
parents for safekeeping and hasn't touched it since the
final. Dorrington admitted the scale of
that victory still hasn't fully sank in, though he got a true
sense of what it meant from skipper Graham Shinny.
He also credited Shinny and fellow defender Nikki Devlin as
important role models. Although Dorrington hasn't spent

(19:16):
much time reliving the match, his dad has become something of
an expert replay watcher, alwaysfinding new highlights and
YouTube clips to enjoy. The Yang centre half says he
knows how much breaking that long wait for a trophy meant to
the Red Army and he's determinedto be part of more special
moments in an Aberdeen shirt. The draw for the quarterfinals
of the Scottish League cap took place last night.

(19:36):
Will face Matherwell at home. The full draw is Kilmarnock
versus Saint Mirren, Partick Thistle at home to Celtic and
Hibs are away to Rangers. Quarterfinal ties will take
place on the weekend of the 20thand 21st of September.
This is our BBC Planets through a Telescope truth under a

(20:00):
microscope. This was an extraordinary.
Unprecedented attack. Hard fact.
Say anything to anyone, anytime and anywhere.
All right, hard questions. Tell me.
What you're doing over here, you're just relaxing.
Soft hugs, over 2 billion raisedfaithfuls, traitors, clever
kids, hungry dads, alpha moans, drums, bangers and absolute

(20:23):
bangers, explosions, conductors, disruptors, fact checking, fake
chickens, foxtrots, death drops, top of your lungs, tears in your
eyes. A doorway through time and
building our future. The BBC's put £5 billion into
the economy. All voices under one roof.

(20:43):
There's ABBC for each of us, funded by all of us.
This is our BBC. I don't know who edits this, but
that's going to have to do. OK Aberdeen women, we're back in
action this afternoon and manager Scott Booth reflects in
a busy summer and looks ahead toan even busier campaign starting
away to Hibs in our season opener.

(21:06):
And some, you know, bigger changes in terms of the schedule
this season and also with bringing players in that are
more able to take part in a in amore full time model.
There will of course be games where we feel that we must win.
And then there'll be games wherewe want to compete like we did
against city just the other week, but hopefully keep those

(21:29):
games closer so that we can, youknow, edge one or two of them as
well. And I think, you know, the start
that we've got against the Champions is really tough away
from home. And then we've follow that up
with Glasgow City at home. So we know it's a tough start.
But yeah, I think it's exciting to feel like you're going into

(21:55):
the first game. It's going to be live on TV
against the Champions and these are the games that the girls
want to play in. We feel that we want to be seen
as a professional outfit despitethe fact that some of the
players are still not professional.
However, we want to act professional.

(22:15):
We want to have that degree of professionalism in the way that
we play and how seriously we take it.
I'd also like to to feel that wecan play good football and keep
the game tidy in possession and and connected.
I think we're our team that whenwe when we are connected both in

(22:35):
and out of possession, we we look really difficult to to beat
and to bypass the opposition really struggle.
But I think All in all, it's we want to enjoy playing football.
We want to have the ball, not bechasing the ball all the time.
And we don't really want the game to be transitional either,

(22:57):
because a lot of teams, I think last season worked better than
us in that in those transitions because they were set up to play
that way. So yeah, I'd like I'd like to
think that we can play good football and and the fans can
enjoy watching it, but there's adefinite before a balls kick to
an excitement, a little bit of the unknown is going to is going

(23:21):
to hit us at times. And we know that a seasons it's
a journey. It's there's ups and downs.
I know that for sure through thefootball career that I've had.
So a little bit a little bit like Jimmy not getting 2 up or
two down, but I'm won't be like lying in bed on the Saturday

(23:42):
night terrified to get out of it, that's for sure.
Aberdeen Women began our 202526 SWPL campaign with a tough
afternoon in the capital, going down five one against reigning
champions Hibs at Meadowbank. Scott Booth had the debuts to
summer signings ABI Tobin and Katie Cox, with Kelly Beatty,
Chess Broderick and Emma Elyoskyalso making their returns to the

(24:02):
starting line up. But it was Hibs who made the
early running with Cox called into action in say 2 minutes to
deny Morrison. The pressure soon told and by
the 12th minute the horse had the lead.
Grant's cutback found Livingstonwas finished crept in at the far
post. Livingston doubled her tally
soon after, smashing home a volley from close range and
Mcgavin added a third 5 minutes before the break with his firmly

(24:23):
in control at half time. Booth introduced debutante Alex
Clark at the interval and Aberdeen responded positively on
the air. Mark Tobin's long range strike
was spilled by the Hibs keeper and Hannah Stewart pounced to
pull one back for the Dons in any hopes of a comeback where
short lived. Just two minutes later McGovern
struck again to restore Hibs's three goal advantage.
Aberdeen pushed late on, Stewarttrying for a lack from distance

(24:47):
before Papadopoulos wrapped up the scoring for Hibs with a
fifth in the closing moments. The final whistle confirmed A5
win defeat for an Aberdeen womanwill take positives from their
second-half showing. But no, there's work ahead as
the new season gets underway. And just a heads up, our game
against Glasgow City eventually scheduled for Sunday the 24th of
August, will now take place at the earlier on Saturday the 23rd

(25:10):
of August at the Pomodel Stadium, kick off 1:00 PM.
This is at the request of Glasgow City due to their
involvement in the UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying.
Do you reckon if I went to the local fish and chip shop and
gave them a Turkey that would dunk it in the deep bra?
I think you should ask. Them drop a Turkey in not a

(25:31):
euphemism. Yes, I'm this girl and all of a
sudden I'm dropping Turkey in. Made her gobble.
Yes, I've got this girl gobblingon me, Turkey.
I've got this girl swung on me, gobbling.
If anyone's getting off this weekend the moment it starts

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
