Constructive Rest is a practice of lying down in a supportive position in order to allow your body to release excess tension, and your spine to lengthen. Based in the Alexander Technique, our guided lie-down talks provide an opportunity to practice awareness and establish freedom and ease in movement. Each installment is 15-20 minutes in length, and guided by Alexander Technique teachers Alexandra Kassouf and Kateri Gormley.
When we practice acceptance, we are allowing conditions to be what they are, without judgment, and without trying to change them directly. This week, we use imagery to explore movement of the pelvis and head in a centering constructive rest practice. Read the accompanying text on our website.
We all have to make choices, and it's easy to get stuck wondering "what if..." In this lie down, we invite you to reframe the question "what if" as curiosity for the present moment. What if I allow my neck to be free?

If we're walking around holding ourselves in place, just in case something happens, we aren't allowing ourselves the freedom to adapt if something does happen. If even the idea of falling can make us tense up and lock our joints, what kind of bracing do we do when we're actually falling? What if we could remain available to adjust and regain balance? What if that's also a metaphor for other areas of our lives?
Acceptance isn’t easy. But it can be an extremely useful practice when we are faced with situations that are outside of our control. This week, our lie down centers around a few simple questions you can ask yourself to bring you closer to accepting the present moment, and finding some freedom in your current conditions. It's easy to shut down when you get overwhelmed. What if you could stay present by considering yourself permeable? Accepting information that is coming your way doesn't mean holding onto it tightly. It may mean letting it pass through you as if it were light. This week's lie down provides space to practice participating in your surroundings. Read the accompanying text on our website.
A winter coat isn’t useful in every situation. Neither are the familiar tensions of our protective habits. Take a few minutes today to practice softening yourself in this lie down, shedding your protective habits. Read the accompanying text on our website.
We are all born with an innate sense of direction, that is: the head leading us in movement, and the body following. This is due in part to our senses, many of which are located in our head. This week, we explore our natural sense of direction in prone. You can find the accompanying newsletter text on our website.
In this lie down we invite you to practice being open to what is there, rather than filling in the blanks with your previous knowledge and experiences. You can find the accompanying newsletter text on our website.
This week's lie down is based on the "Fish Body Exercise," a way to view your trunk as a supportive central structure. How might that be different from letting your limbs dominate your movements? You can find the accompanying newsletter text on our website.
We all have habits associated with one side of our body or the other. Our practice this week invites you to explore the left and right sides of your body in a meaningful way. You can find the accompanying newsletter text on our website.
