Hello there and welcome to theChallenge to Change podcast.
My name is Hazel and thispodcast episode has been
recorded on behalf of ANSAEnvironmental Services. To

please visit ANSA.co.uk Beforewe get into the episode,
(00:29):
You may remember from previouspodcast episodes that I had
talked about routines and howwe can make them a little bit
more ethical and I had saidthat I would update you when
I'd finally managed to get upsuper early to practice yoga.
(00:50):
Well that is still not quitehappened however I had run out
of lemon green tea so I havenow purchased some more and it
is indeed organic lemon greentea and the added bonus was
that the packaging has beenreduced on this brand of lemon
(01:13):
green tea and it is not onlyrecyclable but the packaging
is also recycled as well andthere is no foil Inside the
box that has been removed butthe company in question has
(01:34):
guaranteed that the tea willremain fresh regardless and so
far so good. So really thereason for updating you on
this is just to say that wecan make small changes and
those small changes do make adifference as we know Organic
is much much better for theplanet and this also, the tea
(02:00):
in question here obviously hasnot only reduced packaging but
also it is both recycledpackaging and can also itself
be recycled or reused maybe insome way. So you know a really
great thing to note there aresome changes that I have made
in my life Small changes, butas I say, those small changes
(02:22):
do make a big difference. Solet's get into the podcast
episode. So today I want totalk about waste reduction,
but kind of going bit deeperthan that. And I want to talk
about refilling, reusing andrepurposing. And in this case,
(02:44):
linking that to a new Arefillable shop that's opened
up near to where I live. Andwhat I mean by that is it's
the type of shop that you cango to and you can refill
different containers ofdifferent types of products.
So for example, you can refillshampoo, conditioner, laundry
(03:08):
detergent, washing up liquid, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds,
pasta, And there's other typesof things this particular shop
sold as well. So there'svarious different things that
you can purchase and ratherthan having a new container
every time, you can refilleither a container that you
(03:32):
already have or one that youpurchase from the shop in
question. So as I say, I havevisited a new shop near to
where I live today and It'sonly been open for a few
weeks, I knew it was due toopen so I was quite excited to
try it. I have actually beenbuying refillable laundry
(03:58):
detergent and washing upliquid for several years now
and I do sometimes refillother types of products as
well but that's somethingthat, you know, the laundry
detergent and the washing upliquid is something that I've
stuck to for quite a longtime. So I had intended to get
(04:19):
these refilled today anywayand I was able, of course, to
use this new shop to do that, which on this occasion was a
different location than theplace I normally go to. But,
you know, a really, reallygreat thing to do because
obviously you are reducingwaste because you're refilling
(04:40):
your container. There is anassociated Carbon emission
reduction as well in doingthat so that's a great thing
to do. The shop that I went tothey had pre-loved mason jars
for sale in there so obviouslyyou could if you wanted to buy
(05:02):
a jar whilst you were in thereand I'm sure many other shops
of this type will work in asimilar way. In my case I
already had some containerswith me I wanted to to refill
and I've had these containersfor quite some time now. In my
case I'm using plastic bottlesbut of course if you do want
(05:25):
to avoid the use of plastic asI say a mason jar could work
just as well for laundrydetergent or washing liquid or
even shampoo and conditionermaybe as it would for other
types of things like herbs, spices, nuts and so on. Of
course if you are going to usea mason jar for something that
(05:46):
you use in the shower then ofcourse do, or in the bath in
that case, do be careful ofcourse with glass in a
bathroom environment. Becareful with glass full stop
course. Kind of goes withoutsaying really. But a really
great thing to do. So in mycase I've been able to support
a local business and actuallya local independent business
(06:08):
and one that's actually new aswell. So I've been able to do
that and again, in my case,I've actually walked to the
shop in question. So I've beenable to do that on my lunch
break and enjoy a fairly kindof wellbeing and mindfulness
type walk to the local town.So not only have I been able
(06:34):
to reduce waste by refilling,I'm repurposing containers
that I already have I'msupporting a local business. I
have enjoyed a fairly speedywalk to my local town, so I
got some exercise in there aswell. And course, because I
(06:54):
was on foot, there were nocarbon emissions associated
with this journey. So a reallygreat thing to do for the
planet and also a kind ofhappy accident really that it
actually worked out a lotcheaper. First of all than I
would normally spend on theseproducts, but also I think it
(07:16):
actually is quite goodcomparison if you're
purchasing the kinds oflaundry detergent and washing
liquid that comes in a newbottle every time. So it was
actually, yeah, I think itworked out a little bit
cheaper than even doing that. When I've looked at prices, it
was really good value formoney. So not only have I had
(07:38):
a positive impact upon mypocket, I have, of course, had
positive impact on the planet. So why not give refillable
purchases a try? Hopefully youhave somewhere that you can go
to near to you. So have alook, see what you can find
(07:58):
out. If you don't have onethat's particularly close by,
what you can do is make thatjourney that you're making
kind of a shared journey, so amulti-purpose journey. So from
a carbon emissionsperspective, it's a good thing
if you can make the journeythat you're making part of
other reasons for kind goingout rather than going out
(08:20):
specifically to buy theseparticular things. But if
you're really lucky like meand you have a shop really
close by or comfortably withinwalking distance, then why not
do that? And not only will yoube getting a wellbeing Thank
you so much for listening andhappy refilling. Bye for now.
