De laatste 2 jaar van zijn leven streed hij tegen longkanker.
Alain onderging chemotherapie maar bleef optreden. Op het podium was hij geniaal.

Zwarte hoed, zwarte zonnebril om zijn ziekte te verhullen.
Tijdens de Victoires de la musique in 2009 kreeg Bashung drie prijzen: één voor de beste mannelijk artiest, één voor het beste album getiteld Le Petrol, en één voor de beste tournee.
Na een strijd van 2 jaar tegen de longkanker werd hij in 2009 op 61-jarige leeftijd bijgezet op de beroemde begraafplaats Père Lachaise in Parijs, tussen de allergrootsten.
Bashung geldt als voorbeeld voor jongere artiesten, zoals Bénabar en Raphael. Zijn muziek leeft voort.
Zijn chanson Immortels, onsterfelijk, begint met de strofe:
"Je ne t'ai jamais dit, mais nous sommes immortels."
Ik heb het je nooit verteld, maar wij zijn onsterfelijk.
