(01:09):
As you really listen, and the reasonwhy we are interviewing her.
Because she is director and founderof IgniteYou on Tuesday and Friday.
She holds a very special place
in lots of our hearts, full time.
And she loves giving outto the disability community.

(01:31):
So don't forget to search ourAdvocacy Fellows on YouTube.
[Max] Welcome Becci!
Could we start by asking youthe history of IgniteYou,
how it came aboutand what IgniteYou offers?
[Becci] Well, thank you guysso much for such a lovely intro.
That means a lot.

(01:51):
So Ignite you.
We set up in 2017
as a community interest company.
Before that, I used to run sessionson my own as a Dance Confidence Cornwall.
We started in probably around 2011,I think it was.
And just I'm so passionate about dance, and I think dance is

(02:14):
is quite a universal languageand see the growth in people often.
So I really wanted to set upa community interest company
along with some other like mindedindividuals who are some other directors,
and then we could access more fundingto make
it more to runmore sessions and reach more people.

(02:35):
[Angie] So
what encouraged you to start dancing?
[Becci] Well, I've been passionateabout dance in all of my life.
I used to when I was little,I used to watch.
There was a film in the eightiescalled Flashdance,
and I watched that every day on VHSand recorded Do It.
You guys know what VHS is? excellent.

(02:57):
Good stuff.
So I guess I used to watch that every day,but I didn't actually start
dance classes until I was early twenties.
But I did go.
I just danced all the time, danceall the time.
I mean, everyone. I was always dancing.
And I've always loved a bass beat.
[Angie] Yeah,I most certainly don't blame you.

(03:21):
so bands is also one of my over questions,
but what style of dances are favouriteand why?
[Becci] Good question.
So my favourite style of dancehas got to be hip hop.
Hip hop and street dance is my passion.
Yeah, I love it.
Always have done.
Always. Yeah.

(03:42):
Always been really into sort of hip hopmusic and stuff.
When I was younger and R&Band just really like
doing all of those dance movesbefore any dance classes came along.
Always doing those moves in my bedroomand things like that.
Anyway.
So yeah, hip hop and street I would say.
[Max] Are you a healthy person?
[Becci] Good question, Max.

(04:05):
Sometimes, yes.
Sometimes I'm very healthy.
I'm a nutritional therapist as well,so I do a lot of work around how nutrition
can work really well in your bodyand make you feel much better.
So I do try and eat healthily
and look after myself, exercise, running.

(04:26):
I also love running
and trying to get good sleepand all those things,
but sometimes, sometimes, not always.
And I think it's all about balance.
I think you've got to have a balancein life.
A cool soul food in my soulfood is definitely chocolate.
Do you think it's easyor difficult being healthy?
[Becci] That's another great question.

(04:50):
I think it depends.
I think sometimes I really findlooking after myself
is I'm in the flow of it,I suppose, and I find it easy.
But sometimes, normally, actually, when I'm under a lot of stress,
I find it quite hard to to eat healthilycause I always want to comfy.
But that's when I need to remind myselfthat that's probably when I need to be

(05:12):
looking after myselfand eating well and sleeping and
and exercisingand all those things even more.
So that was a really good question.
That's quite a tricky one.
[Max] How do you know if you're healthy?
[Becci]
I think being healthy isI think we're not.

(05:34):
On a personal note,I know that I'm being healthy when
all of those thingsI've just said, like I'm sleeping better.
I feel much betterwhen I don't have so many sort
of energy crashes throughout the dayand things like that.
When I'm looking after what I'm eatingand sleeping and exercising,
I think it's quite a personal thing.

(05:54):
I think you I think you
when you're eating well and all of thosethings, you're you will just feel better.
You'll have more energy, definitely,
and more balanced energy as well.
[Melissa]Have you struggled with your health?
[Becci] So sometimes, yes,I have struggled with my health and that's

(06:16):
what put me into nutritional therapyand studying nutritional therapy.
So I was actually quite illfor a few years.
And the doctors couldn'treally figure out what was going on.
And it was only when I looked into itmyself and I looked after my food
and all of those things that actuallyI started to feel a lot better. So.

(06:37):
So yeah, there's been different times in my life.
I've struggled with my health, but I feel like I've got lots of tools
in the toolboxthat I can use to make me feel better now.
[Melissa] Why is it importantto have good mental health?
[Becci] So I think it's importantto have good mental health
because it helpsyou deal with things like stress.

(06:59):
I think stress is a big one in life.
I think a lot of peoplehave a lot of stress in different ways.
So I think if you can have
if you can support your mental health, however, that may be for me, dance
absolutely is something that really helpswith my mental health as well as running.
I really like running, but also things like good sleep.
Like I was saying earlier, trying to getsome good sleep if I can always possible.

(07:24):
And also just making sure
I've got a good communityof friends around me.
But it really helps.
I think it helps with resilience, helpspeople
manage more if they if they're in good,if they've got good mental health.
[Melissa]How do you keep your brain healthy?
[Becci] So I keep my brain healthyfrom different ways.

(07:45):
It's a dance, definitely.
We've just actually done a showfor Cornwall with the big dance company,
and when I challenged myselfthat I was still going to be able
to perform because it's been a long timesince actually performing
and picking up the choreography, which is really fast, really helps out.
So that helps my brain, that helps my brain sort of stay

(08:08):
active and working, but also things what I eat.
So things like eating lots of nice oilyfish is really good for your brain
and things like that.
And again, sleep.
I keep banging on about sleep.
It's just really importantto try and get some good sleep
and look after yourself with that way.
So yeah, but I alsoand things are so running for me

(08:30):
is not necessarily about the fitnessside, it's more about my headspace.
So that's my way ofjust sort of switching off.
I put on some nineties house classicsin my, in my headphones and off I go.
And that's my time to let my thoughts go.
So yeah.
[Jack] So the views at home are asking, what do you eat to

(08:51):
keep healthymake sure you put your like and subscribe
to what's now in your home nowto eat healthy food?
So I we eat pretty well at home
I've got Elsie here with meyou think he's my daughter?
Do you think we eat healthy at home?
[Elsie] Most of the time.

(09:11):
But sometimes there is a little chocolateor sweet or.
[Becci] Yes,if we have a little bit balances in it.
I said earlier.
So things I really like to have to eat.
I really like a rainbowcolour of vegetables.
Really important.
So lots of different coloursof vegetables.
I like good protein.
So things like fish and chickenand different me, I really like,

(09:35):
also things like Hummus and stufflike that.
But also yeah, tryingnot to eat too much sort of sugary stuff
because that definitely doesn't agreewith me.
And see, I'm laughing because I was,
he's giving me the side eye here
and what else do I do so well
so he just make sure I have enough water, hydrate it enough.

(09:58):
I'm not as good at that.
I tend to forget to drink enough fiveso someone the other day
with a really brilliant water bottlethat had times on it.
So you had you filled upthe water, filled up with water,
and then you had to drink certain amountsby certain times.
I think I need to get one of thosethat would probably help me.
[Jack] Nice.

(10:18):
What is your favourite danceroutine and why?
[Becci] so my favourite dance routinethat is so hard
because I think lots of different dancescreate lots of different emotions.
So from a hip hop point of view, there's a really good company
called Flawlesslike a dance group called Flawless.
They're amazing, but and there wasthe Animaniacs back in my day.

(10:42):
I think they're still around.I mean, they're incredible.
And but then I also love loadsof watching.
Loads of different stylesand loads of other different dance groups.
So I love watching Strictly each year.
I get really into Strictly
and I love where
I go to the big dance companyand I watch a lot of those dances

(11:03):
and they're incredible and quite oftenwill go up to different dance conventions.
There's one who can you dance and that's athat's a really,
really awesome that'sjust so it's just incredible to watch.
I like any dancethat makes me feel something.
So whether that's happy or sador makes me emotional
in one way or another, I just loveI just love all dance really.

(11:27):
[Jack] Now we are all viewers in your home
would know what to eat to stay healthy.
So what do I stay healthy?
So yeah, same, same.
So Elsie again is giving me the side.
So yeah,
just lots of lots ofmake sure I have enough to eat in a day.

(11:47):
So make sure I have.
We try and have three meals a day,
lots of rainbow vegetables,a little bit of fruit,
protein, thingslike rice and stuff as well.
So yeah.
[Siobhan] Who taught you to dance?
Well, there's a certain ladythat's very special to me.

(12:09):
It's in my heart.
And she's called Fiona Richardsonand she's in Penzance.
She runs the big dance company.
And all those years ago,she was my friend first,
so I knew I met herwhen she first moved down to Cornwall.
This is back in 2000.
She moved down...
about 2001 all years ago.
And I am.

(12:30):
And she starteddoing an adult dance class.
So we just went alongand it was all like at the time
it was MTV's,it's MTV dance moves and stuff.
And that's how I started.
And she saw some potential in mestraight away.
And she offered meshe offered to train me up
as a dance teacherafter a couple of years.
And she really saw that I had somethingthat I could offer people

(12:52):
that might not have been aroundat that time.
I think she saw that.
I'm justI really believe in helping people shine.
So I think she saw that in meand she says, chain me up
not only as a dancer, but also as a dance teacher.
So I was very lucky.
And now I'm my daughter, Elsie.
She goes to the big dance companyand she dances.

(13:14):
[Elsie] I love it there.
[Becci] So yeah.
So Fiona Richardson,we have so much to thank for her
and she's definitely was my teacher,my mentor, but also my friend.
[Siobhan] What was itlike being on the TV on X-Factor?

(13:35):
So we went on.
[Becci] It was Britain's Got Talent,it was 2008
and we started we went throughthe audition, which was up in Cardiff,
and we just went for a laugh,if I'm honest.
We just thought, we'll go upand we'll just enjoy the experience.
And that was it wasit was an amazing experience.
But we went

(13:56):
and they straight awaythey showed a lot of interest in us
and there was a lot of filmingand a lot of interviews.
And then we went away.
And you don't hear for a long time, like you don't hear for for weeks
and weeks and weeks and weeks.
And we just didn'tthink anything out of it.
And then we got a phone call to say
that we were invited up to Londonand we were like, this is happening.

(14:21):
And again, lots of interviews, lots of filming.
And that was the episodewhere they tell you when your company,
if you've been successful or not,and they call certain
people out on the stageand you're in front of these judges.
So the year we did it was Piers Morgan,
Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden,
and they had to start withthey said we weren't successful.

(14:43):
So there's a plot twist and we went homeand we were like,
we were the last ones of the day.
And then two days laterwe had another phone call to say, No,
we really want you on the show, please.
And so we actually had a bit of a twist.
So we went back out and they hadwe had 24 hours to put together
the semi-final piece.
It was on the show, which was the liveshow, and we did that all for the night.

(15:07):
We didn't sleep that night, I can tell you
we had.
And thenwe went up and then it was incredible.
And I'll never forget
there was one really special momentwhen we were on the main stage on it,
which is still the oneI think that you see now
when you watch Britain's Got Talentand the live semi-finals
and we were all having a runthrough on the stage for rehearsals

(15:29):
and they had suddenly they were likeright, okay, three, two, one.
And then suddenlyall this lighting came up
and we were certainly we were like WAP.
It was amazing.
Really, really awesome experience.
And after that we had years of being ableto tour
all over the worldand do really cool things.
So we were very, very lucky, very fortunate,

(15:49):
but we just never took anythingfor granted.
We worked really hard and kept training
and we just tried to be as humbleas we possibly could
and just thank everyone along the wayso lots of gratitude and just feel like
to this day
now we feel, we feel so,so grateful for the experience.
So yeah, [Angie]What an interesting podcast

(16:11):
