In this enlightening episode of Check a Pro Radio, host Joe engages in insightful conversation with home service provider, Cody Johnson, from Garage Door Doctor. Cody, expertly addresses common questions relating to the maintenance and repair of garage doors. Specifically, he tackles the prevalent issue of whether it's possible - and practical - to replace a single panel on a garage door.

Cody explains that garage doors come in segmented panels, however, the availability of an exact match can be a hurdle. The production pattern of doors can change every 7 to 10 years, and manufacturer consolidation often results in discontinued prints. To assess the possibility of panel replacement, Cody's team would need to identify the specific make and model of the door.

While replacing an individual panel is an option, Cody discusses that it often makes more sense to replace the entire door, especially if existing parts are aging or the door is heavy. Furthermore, there could be issues with paint and stamp patterns matching on the replacement panel.

Replacing the garage door can be a great opportunity to upgrade the aesthetics and energy efficiency of the home. It gives homeowners a chance to select a door design that suits their preference, rather than sticking with builder-chosen doors.

Cody emphasizes the considerable return on investment that comes with replacing a garage door, adding that it's cheaper than most home renovations and improvements. They offer clear pricing and financing options to make the process as smooth as possible for interested homeowners.

Check A Pro Joe here on the Check A Pro Radio Show
with a pre-qualified home service provider Cody Johnson from
garage door doctor hello Cody how are you I am
doing great thank you for having me it is great to have you here hey a question's
come into the radio program can you answer it for me absolutely looking forward
to it all right here's the question this is a pretty fair question i think can

(00:23):
a garage door panel be replaced on my garage door so I'm assuming one of the
panels has had a problem.
Yes. You know, most people didn't even know that these garage doors come in
sections. Most of them are, you know, 21 inches.
Some are 24, 32 or 18 inches.
Depends on the size of the door. But to get this section to match is going to be the issue.

(00:48):
So a lot of the manufacturers restamp the patterns every seven to 10, maybe 12 years.
So the question is, is can we identify what the door manufacturer is?
Are they still in business?
There's a lot of consolidation in the manufacturing world where they buy each
other and then kill off the prints, right?
And so that's really what the question is. So what we have to do is we have

(01:10):
to come out, measure the door, see if we can find a make and a model,
and then we'll find out if we can acquire the section.
A lot of times, once you do that, a lot of times the door is heavy,
the door is old it may be best just
to look at the entire door just changing the entire door
because most people don't realize this if the builder

(01:31):
put it in it was probably a white door and then they spray painted
it to whatever color to match your trim so once you buy one or two sections
your other two are probably damaged or warped anyways you're going to have to
paint it and then you still got old parts on the door so you know hey if you're
selling your house and it's an eyesore,

(01:51):
if it's possible, we'll give you quotes.
We'll give you an estimate for what it takes to fix it up to whatever route you want.
We'll give you options from new door all the way down to this section if it's possible.
Yeah, it's really important to have the door operate well and safely and to look good.
And I would think if it's a replacement panel, that paint and maybe even the

(02:17):
stamp itself, the pattern may not match.
Yeah, you have to get the exact make and model. So the way the tongue and groove,
how the doors mesh together, it has to be the exact same.
The stamp patterns, you know, if I replace to you, say, oh, it's the same one.
Well, the rectangles or squares, whichever way you want to call it,
they wouldn't be centered up with each other. They'll be off-centered.

(02:38):
So your dent in the door would actually look better than sections that don't match.
So there's really no negotiating about it. It has to be the exact same make and model.
If it exists, we'll give you a pricing on it. If it doesn't exist,
we'll give you some options for a new door.
And the new door may be the way to go. Joe, sometimes when something is cracked,

(03:02):
dented, broken, it's a good opportunity now to upgrade.
It's kind of an excuse to upgrade, but when you upgrade, what are the benefits of that?
Oh yeah, absolutely. Especially since most of us didn't even get to select the
garage door for our house.
The garage door is 40% of the face of the home. It's the smile of your home.
And the builder picked it out and the builder picked out the most economical

(03:25):
route possible. They didn't really care.
Okay. The garage door is thought about last yet. It's 40% of the face of your home.
But when that time comes, we can get something that looks similar or we can get much,
much fancier and nicer looking they got faux wood
looks there's different stamp patterns you can even stick with
white or almond you know big basic colors but do

(03:47):
an upgraded stamp pattern on the door so the
way it looks new and updated plus you can now get into energy efficient doors
so with with higher insulation levels it's going to be uh structurally more
rigid it'll be 20 degrees cooler in the summer 20 degrees warmer in the winter
so it helps you it helps you on your energy bill in your house Um,

(04:08):
we can make doors a lot quieter nowadays and, you know, it remodeler magazine said it's 102% ROI.
The number one, um, refer, uh, renovation you can do to your home is, is a garage door.
So. So yes, because it really is the smile of your home.
It takes up so much of the facade of the home and it's not that expensive.

(04:32):
It's one of the least expensive types of home repair or improvement versus remodeling
your kitchen, putting a swimming pool in and replacing your roof.
Oh yeah. And I mean, we've even got some promotions going on where if you can
stomach just 50 bucks a month, we can get you into a new door system. So 50 bucks and up.
So, you know, it's, it's a no brainer. Uh, so if you're about to sell your home,

(04:56):
get a new door, new door system on your house, you'll get more for your house.
You'll sell your house quicker and then just pay off the promo once it's, once you sell it.
Cody, thank you so much for being the garage door expert here on Check A Pro Radio
today. I really appreciate it. Thank you.
