Welcome to Marcom Techniques, a podcast about marketing communications and technology
with special series on thought leadership.
Be sure to follow us on social media and on your favorite podcast platform.
Music.
I'm your host, Jacqueline Carmona.

(00:33):
Traditionally, public relations professionals did not seek to create their personal
brand In managing your client's public crisis issues, you remain out of sight and out of the news.
The concentration on branding was solely on your client. It made sense then.
It's 2024 and public relations professionals must get their heads out of the sand.

(00:58):
It is a metaphorical expression of an ostrich sinking its head in the sand to
ignore the harsh reality that a predator is near.
And so it buries its head in the sand, the same as the infantile understanding
of out of sight, out of mind.
Branding is for everyone involved in business and this digital new age of AI

(01:23):
where you are competing with made up AI personas who are becoming more and more realistic.
So if you ask me, the old way of doing PR is not working. Earned media is now
podcasts, blogs that help SEO and social media.
In my personal business, I am not interested in the industry standards of public

(01:48):
relations, which do not work and need to change.
This is the time for that change and Isabella Public Relations will be making that shift.
Branding is much more than logos and color palettes. Business relationships
can also affect your personal and business branding.
So both types of relationships can influence your brand. If you have one rotten fruit in your network,

(02:15):
it spoils the rest around you, or it tends to attract the same level of energy type of people.
If you do not deal with it right away, it will cause you more problems in the long term.
If you don't deal with it properly, instead of concentrating on your business
goals, you'll end up blowing out small fires all day long and not working on your business.

(02:38):
Here's the problem with this type of issue. I do not believe in excuses,
so I will figure things out.
And since I do not believe in excuses, the only way to eliminate this problem
is to be brutally honest about it.
I've always been very inquisitive. When I worked in corporate for a short time,
I had clients who only demanded to speak with me.

(02:59):
They didn't want to speak to anyone else. They were disappointed if they came
into the office and I was out of the office.
Why? Because when they came to talk to me, I didn't talk about the products I sold.
I talked about what was happening in the market and how it affected them.
It helped them feel empowered in making the decisions.

(03:21):
It was more about building relationships through knowledge, empowering people,
and it came naturally through me by being inquisitive.
Instead of coming home and watching TV, I was interested in the markets and
what was currently happening.
This didn't fare well with my partner at the time who I married.

(03:42):
He wanted to be the center of attention.
He didn't like that I created attention. The same reason he originally liked
me, he ended up resenting me.
I love to read books, analyze things, and be inquisitive. And I love fashion.
He didn't like that I kept continuing my education.
I was outperforming him once again. So he needed to start arguments before work events.

(04:07):
He needed to show up by himself so he can have all the attention to himself.
Your partner shouldn't compete with you. Arn sharpens Arn.
It only means you need to step up your game.
We should be feeding off each other and enhancing our drive together and not competing.

(04:27):
As his daughter puts it, a man who tries to clip a woman's wings.
I'm not the only person this has happened to. This doesn't just happen to women, but to men as well.
I have seen women clip a man's wings, not allowing him to be himself,
enjoy things by himself, and be slightly independent of her,

(04:48):
meaning discovering what he also enjoys in life.
This is why personal and business relationships affect your business.
You have to take care of the problem before moving forward.
And people love to do things in the dark. How can you clip a person's wings?
Well, start causing problems and then provide the solution for it and be the

(05:11):
hero. After he is the hero.
He turns into a victim of his own circumstances because his own family resents the games he is playing.
He has stolen thousands of dollars and held it for four months using it as an
anxiety level induced decision making method.
He has stolen another check, which is felony level. He has changed the mailing

(05:36):
address to detour checks.
I was fixing a roof of a house and he changed the address to collect the insurance
claim. I had to pay out of pocket for serious roofing repairs.
He has even signed checks that were meant for me only.
I come from middle class with my dad making close to six-figure salary growing up.
He worked his way up with a pantry

(05:58):
filled with boxes of shampoo and conditioner and always a lot of food.
Whereas he grew up with a single mother making minimal wage in a one-bedroom
apartment with three other siblings. But since he was with me,
he always made income higher than city, state, and federal level.
But he's always working towards getting into debt.

(06:19):
Why? Because he buys tailor suits, spends money on dry cleaning suits,
spends money just on looking rich.
I do not have a problem in getting anything on sale or going to work in tennis
shoes to offset dry cleaning costs.
Actually, when I found jobs with relaxed office attire, I would behave like

(06:40):
I hit the jackpot in saving money.
I do not need to prove anything to anyone.
My parents refused to buy new cars.
They don't want new cars. He buys new cars for no reason. I mean, this is a problem.
I paid lawyer fees and he was in court this year with his attorney stating he
hasn't paid her yet either.

(07:00):
My attorney was a nice guy, so that should tell you the problem that also caused.
You can't have a nice guy attorney fighting for you. You need a shark attorney.
And the killer is he works for the SBA. That is the Small Business Administration. administration.
They help small businesses like mine move forward.

(07:20):
So he understands exactly what he's doing to my business.
So what happens? I'm constantly putting out fires instead of concentrating on my business.
The irony is he tries to do this with his own daughter's business as well.
They don't want you to succeed because it will remind them of their lack of
effort. So when you're doing business, you also have to look at the spouses.

(07:45):
What are their business goals, life goals, and most importantly, what is their mindset?
At an early adult age, I didn't quite understand we had two different mindset
because he was always so outwardly positive.
So now I'm experiencing a lot of anxiety, right? Who wants to deal with this type of person? No one.

(08:10):
So I looked for a community and the problem with this community was people attract energy levels.
I was experiencing low energy levels. So guess what I attracted?
The CEO of this community interpreted my anxiety as having imposter syndrome,
which you really can't have imposter syndrome when you are already out of your

(08:31):
comfort zone and you're pretty confident in what you know.
Everyone is a mental health practitioner nowadays.
So when people do not understand you, they make up scenarios for you and your
life, which causes more problems. because some people need pet projects to deflect
from their self-development.

(08:52):
So there was a scenario created around me and my anxiety when I was not receptive
to the made-up narrative.
The juvenile behavior started to come out, like emailing and stating that I
was the one emailing and bothering, even though there are emails as receipts
showing otherwise. wise.
You don't need to know people's full story to show kindness to people or for

(09:17):
people to have similar journeys for you to be a kind person.
In order to be kind, some people need you to reflect similarities to them as a person.
It is a God complex, basically a lack of inner validation.
The more different someone is and their journey, the more interested I become,

(09:38):
especially in business.
You will be surprised to know how many people from different walks of life,
countries, ethnicities, have similar mindsets but have forged a different path with that mindset,
creating different levels of possibilities to solve problems.
Why do you want someone to reflect exactly who you are?

(10:01):
We only live an average of 75 to 80 years of lifespan.
There's only so much we can learn from our own lifespan and our own journey.
I want to meet people that are different from me, different journeys.
I am not threatened by that. I actually embrace it. They say to love God is
to love people. I choose to love people.

(10:24):
There are so many amazing humans to learn from. This is why I love thought leadership.
So back to the title of this episode, Managing Crisis, Housekeeping Towards Your Branding.
Just call people out. People like to make moves in privacy.
Just call it out. Time is money. Don't waste your time with people who waste

(10:48):
their own time and money.
It is also important to hire people who believe in your brand and whose lives
don't oppose the messaging of your brand.
You can't call reporters to cover you cutting a ribbon for helping people start
their business while sabotaging the women in your family and their business.
While discussing statistics on failures of small business at these events and

(11:11):
laughing at the women in your family for having failures.
It is more than what you have the courage to muster to do publicly.
I am willing to fail publicly in order to succeed because I am willing to win
at all costs with integrity.
Thank you for joining us on our podcast.
