Why being authentic in your jobsearch saves your mental health.

(01:08):
Welcome Postdoc Transformerto another episode of the
Postdoc Transformation Show.
I'm your host, Professor Dr.
Eleonore Soei- Winkels, and todaywe're going to dive into a crucial
topic for those of you who areconsidering a career transition from
academia to business or industries.
We will discuss why being authentic inyour job search saves your mental health.

(01:29):
And here are 10 talking pointsto guide our discussion.
Number one, the pressure to conform.
In academia, we oftenfollow a predefined path.
Bachelor, master, PhD, postdoc, professor.
Transitioning into the businessworld allows us to be ourselves.
You can now think of high expectationsand narrow expectations, or whether you

(01:55):
want to liberate yourself from that tobecome more authentic in your job search.
And that being said, I conformed verymuch as a PhD student, but as a professor,
boomeranging back after I had thrivedin business and running my own business,
I now stomp away and I am differentbecause I want to show you that it is

(02:17):
possible to be non conform in academia.
Number two, the mentaltoll of imposter syndrome.
Trying to fit into academic moldscan lead to imposter syndrome
because you are constantly comparingyourself against others who are
maybe already further down the road.
And that affects our mental well being weare constantly trying to outperform them

(02:39):
on moving set points per career stage.
So, embracing your authenticity andacknowledging what you have achieved
already, despite your obstacles thatmake you authentic and unique, and also
asking for accommodations because youneed them, that can be an antidote.

(03:02):
In business, it's enough to have solidgood enough questions and answers so
that the business is going and you don'tneed to always be better than all others.
Results matter more inbusiness than in science.
And once you have determined yourreadiness to leap and want to transition

(03:24):
into business or industries, then youcan enroll in your free email course with
10 actionable, bingeable email lessonsuntil you start your job in business.
You'll get 10 emails like this.
Number one, how to leap out of science.
Number two, how to build yoursustainable LinkedIn profile.
Number three, how to readsocial media and network.

(03:45):
Number four, how to researchyour favorite jobs and employers.
Number five, how to do informationinterviews to get insights.
Number six, how to create yourcustomized applications with ChatGPT.
Number seven, how to prepare yourthesis from a business point of view.
Number eight, how to applyto your favorite employers.

(04:06):
Number nine, how to choosethe right job offer.
Number 10, how toprepare for your new job.
Number three, aligningvalues with employers.
Authenticity involves aligning yourvalues with those of potential employers.

(04:26):
And this is so crucial because that leadsto a more fulfilling career and as a
consequence, better mental health for you.
If you don't know about your values, please also listen to our first
PostdocTransformation Show episodeon how to check your readiness to
leap out of science, as I talkedabout the vision of life, and
that's directly tied to your values.

(04:48):

Also, Our subscription and listeningnumbers are key for finding the
right sponsors for our show sothat we can help you for free.
And now back to the show..
Number four.
Finding the right fit.
Authenticity can help you to find ajob that truly fits your skills and

(05:30):
personality and that, at the end of theday, will reduce the stress of trying to
fit into roles that don't suit you (yet).
And that also relates to point 10at the end of the episode, so, stay
tuned, but also listen to previousepisodes where we talk about the
future of work, but also businessroles that require strong teaching

(05:52):
skills or research skills or whatever.
And also the episode workingout your future will be helpful
for finding the right fit.
Number five, building genuine connections.
Authenticity helps you to build genuineconnections with potential employers,
their recruiters, and colleagues.

(06:13):
These connections can provide a supportsystem during your career transition.
For example, I openly sharedthat I have no clue about certain
topics, but mastering them wasnecessary to succeed in that role.
So instead, I built alliances.
I try to offer something thatothers were lacking that also were

(06:34):
needed to succeed in that role.
So, it's a give and take.
You need to build genuine connectionsbecause you are reliably supporting
others and you are also vulnerableenough and strong enough to
ask for help when you need it.
Also find relatable role models thatcan inspire you to take the next step.

(06:58):
And that's why season three is soimportant for you and so inspiring
because there I have a lot of rolemodels in business, in academia, in
entrepreneurship, in whatever fieldthat is maybe relevant to you when
you are leaping out of science.
Because then you can follow thesepeople and maybe you can also learn

(07:18):
from them other things that theyhaven't shared yet in our episodes.
Hey, Postdoc Transformer, are youcurious to ask professors, principal
investigators, visiting scientists, postdocs, PhD students, and candidates
some in depth life and careerguiding questions, but it feels
cringe, so you end up not asking?

So you will earn money with us aswe help you and your PhD besties
to transition into business.
We can build aPostdocTransformation together.
Number six, I already dropped it.
Uniqueness.
So, you need to embraceyour unique perspective.

(09:06):
Your unique perspective as a postdoc, professor, or scientist can be
a valuable asset in the businessworld when you're true to yourself.
Accept that you are different, capitalize on that by including instead
of ignoring or neglecting your past.
For example, at one event, I wasinvited as a business owner to welcome

(09:27):
business leaders, and I spoke aboutthe Nobel Prize winner, Professor Dr.
Claudia Goldin, and her work, andwhy her work was so crucial for
senior human resource managers.
They all had studiedpsychology or economics.
Still, none of them recalled hearingabout her research in their studies.

(09:50):
So, by bringing significant andrelevant academic insights to them
in a way that they can apply in theirbusiness, that is, HR function, made
my speech valuable and shareable.
And it wasn't sharing about my researchor my job or my business or whatever.
It was connecting the people I servewith insights that were valuable for them.

(10:15):
Number seven, handling rejections.
I already talked about being vulnerableand authenticity can help you to
handle job rejections with resilience.
You actually build resilienceby coping with job rejections.
And as a researcher, youprobably know about that.
We'll discuss now how to turn theserejections into opportunities for growth.

(10:39):
You need to learn about, okay, sowhat can I do better next time?
Why was that a valid rejection.
How should I address it?
Was it the wrong target group?
Was it the wrong wording orwrong timing or whatever it is.
So, next time around, you'll be better prepared.
And that helps you to learnand grow for the future.

(11:01):
And to be honest, that iswhat nature always does.
Right?
Pruning is a natural phenomenonand rejections are just a speedy
signal to guide you in your pruning
From episode one and counting, Ihave proudly hosted all our Postdoc

(11:23):
Transformation Show episodes on Podbean.
As a former IT strategy consultant,I have high requirements on my
tech stack and Podbean is myperfect fit for a podcast host.
If you want to create your own individualpodcast or one for, you know, internal
upskilling and communications withina company, DM or email me Podbean so I

(11:43):
can share my experience and consult you.
You can also use my affiliatelinks for perks, launching
your own podcast with Podbean.
Number eight a sense of empowermentif you're authentic in your job search
and also get the jobs that you reallywant and not just what you think are

(12:08):
suitable for your status that canempower you to take charge of your career
path and make choices that genuinelyresonate with your vision of life.
And again, if you don't know what yourvision of life is, go back to the first
episode of the PostdocTransformationshow, because there I talked about

(12:28):
the vision of life extensively.
So, you made your mind ona reflected foundation.
And now you can also dismiss ill fittingjob offers or negotiate a mediocre
job offer because you already didyour homework and that empowers you.
Number nine, mental health benefits.
And as a professor of industrialand occupational psychology, this

(12:51):
really is a topic that matters to me.
So, don't promise what you cannot deliver.
In a nutshell, you will have reducedstress and anxiety during the job search
process, if you know what you can deliver.
And if you landed the job, and if youdidn't lie or exaggerated about your

(13:12):
contributions, etc, then you don't have tolive up to expectations larger than life.
That means you don't have to stretchin impossible or yet impossible
ways for you to reach the goals.
That really is, you'redoing yourself a favor.
And also you're doing a favor for therecruiter who said you should be hired.

(13:34):
Essentially, at the end of the day, youwill minimize your own burnout risk.
And now it's time to thank companyABC, who sponsors this episode of
the postdoc transformation show.
I would now be reading the company'sanswers to one of six bold questions
so that you can choose to apply.
For example, number one, describeyour most valuable experts

(13:55):
versus leaders in your company.
Have they typically earned a doctor title?
Number two.
For whichever company roles orunits do you encourage somebody
with a doctor title to apply?
Number three.
How would you describe your organizationalculture in which your most valuable
experts and leaders thrive in?
To nominate an employer ofchoice so that we can ask our own

(14:18):
formative bold questions, let usknow by the click on the link.
If you are a company representative, like in recruiting and employer
branding, and now you want your companyto be highlighted as an employer
of choice for our audience, youcan become a sponsor of a dedicated
Postal Transformation Show episode.
Just click on the link in theshow notes and now back to the

(14:41):
Postal Transformation episode.
Number 10, the long term impact.
I see a lot of PhDs who come to my careercoaching because they have landed a first
job in business and they don't like it.
And then they're thinking, howcan they now redirect and find a
better job that is more suitableor aligned to their vision of life?

(15:01):
Or can they come back to academia, havingwork experience of one or two years?
This is the moment when I think, theyshould have listened to my postdoc
transformation show years ago.
So, now if you're still in the processof earning your PhD, you should also
think about the long term impact ofnot finding happiness or being sick

(15:26):
because of your first job in business.
Authenticity is not only helpfulfor landing a job, but it's
also helpful for you maintainingmental wellbeing throughout your
first job and your later jobs.
Being laid off because you were notperforming well, will always be hurtful,

(15:48):
even 10 or 20 years down the road.
Think of your career as a neton a children's playground.
Each job can lead to the nextone in every direction, as long
as it's within your safe reach.
And ideally, you can capitalize onevery previous job in the long run
and according to your season of life.

(16:08):
It's also strategic to parkin a job to build a runway for
your next career iteration.
Remember, you are a PostdocTransformer.
You are highly intelligent, welleducated, a bachelor, master, and
maybe you have already your doctorunder your belt, or you are a postdoc.
You are internationally experienced, fluent in English, a leader and

(16:31):
expert in your prior researchfield, you're resilient, brilliant
in adaptation and problem solving.
You are eager to bring in thetransferable and monetizable
skills needed in many companies.
To embrace the future and to become orremain an innovator in their markets.
Taken together, these are the 10 points.
The pressure to conform, the mental tollof imposter syndrome, aligning values with

(16:55):
employers, finding the right fit, buildinggenuine connections, embracing your
unique perspective, handling rejectionsand a sense of empowerment, mental health
benefits, and the long term impact.
Remember, dear PostdocTransformer, your authenticity is your greatest
strength in your job search.
It's not about changing who youare to fit a role, but instead it's

(17:20):
about finding a role that fits you.
Stay true to yourself, be patientand you'll be on the path to a more
mentally healthy and fulfilling career.
This way you will own yourPostdocTransformation in a healthy way.
And I'm really the bestexample for this episode.

(17:42):
You know, I'm a techie at heart.
Just right before the pandemic started,I was simply bored to be a professor
who was never technically challenged.
And as a professor of industrialoccupational psychology
teaching also reorganizingorganizations, I took my own pill.

(18:03):
So, I rebuilt my career coachingbusiness for local graduate
schools in an online way.
Are you curious how I did it?
I love how I can delve intothe IT tech stack, like back
in my old days in IT strategy.
I built my PostdocTransformation as adigital business, and I chose Active

(18:24):
Campaign to be the centerpiece ofall my services like email course,
podcasts, newsletters, show notes, websites, sales page, merch shop,
forms, whatever it is, as needed.
As a former IT strategy consultant,I have high requirements on my
tech stack, and Active Campaignis a must have recommendation.
I use it daily.

(18:44):
If you want to create your owndigital business with various lead
magnets and funnel options, DM oremail me "ActiveCampaign" so I can
share my experience and consult you.
You can also use my affiliate links forperks launching your own digital business.
