(00:01):
All right.
We are here with an innovator of Daybreak.
Yes.
McKayla Larson, you just got a new role.
You just kind.
Announced to us with Camera Shy,which is who you were to begin
with, but you got promoted.
So tell us what you dowith Camera Shy now.
Um, I am the manager, the studio managerat Camera Shy in Daybreak, and I love it.
(00:23):
It's the best.
Um, I take care of like all theemployees, I run the business.
I get to know all thecustomers that come in.
Yeah, right on Soda Row there?
Yes.
Straight across from the break ish.
You guys know it?
Yep.
I mean, we've been in thereand did a tour a couple times.
We got some photo shoots done with it.
Is it.
I've told people this before too.
Photographer is a photographer.
You can get somebody to take your picture, but you gotta also get that experience.
(00:47):
And she did like, oh, the santic dog.
You remember that?
Oh, Santa.
My kids still talk about that.
You should see some stuff you did.
They actually don't gonna dive inand talk about that because that
is not every photography studio.
No.
So we'll get back to the rootsand kitty candids and all of that.
Yeah, we'll bring that up.
But the roots to this, you guys havebeen in photography for a very long time.
(01:10):
They've been in Utah specificallyfor a very long, you know
what you're doing right?
But what sets them apart, what we'retalking about with the Santa event is
they bring in Santa Claus to the studio.
Yeah.
Kids that get their picturesand their little jammies
and they're on Santa's knee.
You have your littlepicture with your dog.
Yep.
But the studio itself onSoda Road, it's not as big.
(01:32):
As you think it is, but after you, ifyou saw a picture of all the backgrounds
and all the environments behave insideof there and the way that they can.
Decorate.
Is that the Yeah, they're differentwalls, different, different
backgrounds, different walls.
Yeah.
There's, how many backdropsdo you guys have in there?
Oh man.
We have three different rooms,so probably at least 20.
I would say probably, I'd probablysay like 15, 17 something, I think.
(01:55):
Yeah, pretty close to, and we change 'em.
But with Santa Claus, theyalso have Easter bunnies.
Yes.
That like the little bunnies.
'cause we're coming in.
Just wild bunny, little bunnies.
Bunnies that the kids can holdand get their picture with.
So funny.
What else do you guys do that youbring into the studio that's coming?
Um.
Seasonal.
That's usually it is likeSanta and the bunnies, we do
(02:17):
like little shoots like vol.
Our volts wagon.
Yeah.
Um, that one's really fun.
Ruth.
She's cute.
She's cute.
We do a lot of minis with that.
You can rent Ruth.
Yeah.
Which is a little photograph.
A photo.
Ruth.
Yeah.
A little bug.
It's so cute.
No, she is the cutest thing.
Well, she's just tiny too.
You guys talk to anotherlanguage or something.
(02:38):
I'm like, who?
You What?
Talk about, I feel like we're likeall over the place with the 'cause.
I just do get so excited aboutall the options that they have.
Let's see that photo I,okay, his name is Coda.
Coda is so durable until you see thisphoto with, oh man, I've seen this.
We gotta get a close up of that.
I gotta show the audience here.
Isn't that, look at the.
(02:58):
I love it.
Now if you, oh my gosh.
If you were to put a bottle of colain that image, you got a new right.
New ad, right?
Right.
Coca-Cola back to.
Let's just say the beginning for you.
Yeah.
Your why.
So I was probably like 15 years old.
Well, I was younger than that.
I was probably 14.
(03:19):
But I would always take pictures oflike my family and I like decided to
like make my own photography page.
And the owner of Camera Shy,I was actually friends with
her daughter in high school.
Oh.
Um, she saw her name's Rebecca.
Um, she saw like all my work andshe asked me to work for Camera Shy.
So I've been at Camera Shy.
Since I was 16.
Whoa.
My goodness.
(03:39):
So six years.
So exactly two years now.
I was gonna say it's two and a two years.
I've been there for likea long time and I love it.
I can't see myself doing anything else.
You can tell you're sopassionate about it.
That's probably like whyI was getting so animated.
Because you've done severalphoto shoots for us.
Yeah.
Radio daybreak photos, y'all.
This is the girl thatdid 'em at Camera Shine.
(04:00):
The new image, the new cover art,all the stuff we That's, that's her.
That's all.
The camera is a time machine.
It is a time machine to the past.
If you, that's what you do.
You kept, you're capturing, do you only doit in studio or do you go outside studio?
We go outside too.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We go, especially in Daybreak, wego outside and it's beautiful here,
so we have a lot of places to shoot.
(04:20):
Now.
Are you asking permission beforeyou get to these people's yards
and get ask for forgiveness?
Not permission.
We've learned that.
Yeah.
And that is one thing that wewanna bring up is there are
a lot of locations out here.
Yeah.
So you guys are like prime spotwhere you're located in Soda Row.
The moments for families like andwatching their kids grow Yeah.
(04:43):
Is like the best thingthat I could like ever do.
Like those are just momentsthat most people can't catch.
And so the fact that I get to dothat for them aw is the best feeling.
Heart cry because it goes so fast.
Y'all.
You got little My babies.
But also that you're able to dothose in studio seasonal fun shots.
(05:03):
If you want something alittle more formal maybe.
Or do you guys have theoutdoor shoot out by Okra Lake?
Where's kind of another popularplace you guys like to shoot out?
Here we go like aroundthe buildings, around day.
Oh yeah.
People love the like industrial look.
Yeah, we do that.
There's also, we used to shoot by theglass house, but we don't anymore.
We just go over by that area and shootthat way with like the mountains.
(05:23):
Yeah.
Super.
Yeah.
That's beautiful.
That's a beautiful overlook right there.
You named off a ton of places right here.
What's your favorite, like what's thebest location you've ever went to?
It doesn't have to be around daybreak.
If you've just been, maybe you went toIceland, maybe you went, do you realize
you're calling, you're asking it for time.
That's a hard one for personal reason.
It could be for whatever reason, isn't it?
Possibly.
There's the secret spotin Draper that I love.
(05:45):
There you go.
You know like the flight park area,it's kind of up there, but you go
a little bit past the flight park.
I don't give it away there.
It's in sun crash.
I'm gonna get a nap outtaprobably where you wash your drum.
It could be probably somewhere around it.
It's a vortex or something there.
You just go up there.
Is that like a spot you would go?
Not take pho, like you might go up there, just go to meditate or when it's on.
(06:07):
I'm just trying to pinpoint whereis, well, I'm sitting right here.
You have to talk to math bags also.
BLE Fork is beautiful.
Where is this?
Tipple Fork.
Okay.
We do like minis up there too.
Are kids like favorite of yoursubjects to photograph or, or?
I feel like all of it, it'sjust mainly families for me.
I've seen you in that element.
That's why I'm asking.
(06:27):
I'm like.
Yeah, I love meeting like new families.
That's like the best.
I've been in there, I've been inthere a whole bunch of times and I
always see families coming out as I'mcoming in and they're always smiling.
Smiling.
Yep.
I don't know if it's laughinggas or something pumped at it.
I think about like getting my kids photos.
'cause I've got four, you know, four biological, four bonus kids.
But I think about gettingours even as adults.
(06:48):
Okay.
We're talking about my eight kids now.
It's like pulling teeth.
It is.
It is not fun.
But we have.
Full disclosure, she hasnot taken our family photos.
Not talking about McKayla, I'mtalking about other photographers
potentially, you know?
Yeah.
The photographer process.
Yeah.
And it's the photographers too.
I tell you personally, and this isme just being out there, but I have
(07:10):
literally told my wife, Lindsay, I waslike, we, we have our photographer,
we, we've got our photographer forour boys because they loved you.
And I was like, well.
They're gonna grow together.
That's true.
It really is true.
They probably get to knowyou and connect with you too.
Mm-hmm.
Because you have been there for solong, which is probably one of the
things I would imagine about your job.
That's a lot of fun.
The day time, I'm, I'm gonna book a twohour thing and I'm gonna drop 'em off.
(07:33):
And me and Lindsay are, go watch a movie'cause you got on daycare, free daycare
like, and then you get photos of return.
So, oh, watch it now.
You can have a lot of people on it.
Say, Hey, drop my kid off here on Monday.
You know what Mikayla's doing for us?
Right after this, what is,what is taking pictures.
Taking pictures of my little grand pup.
(07:53):
Oh, no peaches.
No, she's taking care of peaches.
I can't tell you.
You talking about peaches.
I thought this was an actualhuman being is here somewhere.
I don't know if she'll makean appearance on the pod.
This is a dog that you guys have been.
This is, this is my grand pup.
Mikayla.
They brought up like redcarpet and everything.
Photography.
(08:14):
Justin, you should go get peachesand we will have her make a roll
if you're end peaches on the show.
What else can we talk aboutthat we haven't already that
you wanna make sure people know?
Yeah, or maybe you got somekind of story out there.
Big news breaking.
You got breaking news for us.
I know that there's a lot of changes thatare gonna be happening to camera shy.
So date tuned for that.
I think it's gonna be a good change.
I think it's gonna help our business grow.
(08:35):
So that's what we're all about here.
That's what we're all about here.
Ray Day break.
We want, where's peachy?
Oh, this is my grandpa.
She is, so, yeah.
She like, if you can shoot photos ofthis little peachy, are you serious?
You can get anyone.
Okay.
I thought it was a, I made, oh, okay.
(08:56):
She makes, she, she fucks you.
Obviously she knows who her grandma is.
What is that?
Peach.
She loves me.
You are the dog whisperer orthe closest thing to a dog in
the room that she's called.
She is a miracle worker.
I am.
If she can deal with like twolittle boys running around.
(09:16):
Oh yeah.
She got all the crazy withSanta Claus in the room.
She can do any, she did.
She had mine.
She can do anything.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So some changes are going on.
Positive things gonna begrowing potentially or, or
restructuring making some.
Some waves.
Yeah.
We didn't really talk aboutthe backstory of kitty canons.
I want to jump into that because Iknow that there's a relationship there
(09:37):
between camera shy and kitty canon.
Yeah.
Rebecca, the owner of Cam Shi, um,I'm pretty sure she worked well.
I am sure.
Yeah.
She worked for.
Kitty canid.
I know that they're related somehow.
I don't know how, but they're family.
So Photography business.
Yeah.
And Becky has actually knownme since I was like, probably
little, little like two.
She's taken my, she hassuch a, a broad name.
(09:59):
I just love it.
Right.
She used to take your photo.
Yeah, she did.
Oh my word.
So this has really comefull circle for you.
I didn't know that either.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
It's just really fun to Wow.
Find that out.
But so she started at Kitty Can ashaving her own picture taken by family
members that grew this company orbranched off rather into Ken Shi.
(10:21):
What's the chances that you've done that?
For what if mine, maybe Mike Hill branchoff might be a no, he ain't doing nothing.
He's like, no, no, no.
He do it.
You have that impact.
You never know somebodythat you photographer.
Yeah, it's true.
That's fun to think about, like put yourself in there.
It's fun.
Yeah.
We get teenagers in there a lotthat say like, you have a fun job.
(10:43):
Like I wanna do this.
I'm like, do it.
I'm gonna tell you right now, anybodythat comes to you and does that say.
Be my shadow and see howserious I'm, I'm serious.
See if I'm serious.
And if they come in there and theyshow up and be your shadow, you
know, you know, right there they'relike, oh, not always did a cool
job, but this is the one for me.
Yeah.
So I think you should try that out.
You know, I keep trying to armtwist her thinking about, you
(11:04):
know, riff roles and networking.
I keep trying to arm twist her to getover to BNI and take head shots for us.
State of BI like, weneed some new headshot.
And you do that too, right?
If you're a business owner, youneed a headshot is your girl.
That's right.
BNI is on Wednesdaymornings at 9:00 AM Yep.
At the DCC.
That's the Daybreak community center.
That's right.
Stand up by the the,the elementary school.
(11:26):
Yeah.
And any business owner reallyshould come out there just to
network, just to feel the vibe.
That's what we always getwith our, we we get told.
Different vibe from the beginning.
You've been at other networking eventshere, they all get a different vibe.
Like this is, it's, thisis a true great location.
Like it's kind of the fun thing, speciallocation community is the networking
and the the community about it.
The relationships, like that'swhy a lot of people move here and.
(11:49):
Really appreciate what you do.
We're gonna get her overthere for head shots.
Let's do it.
We're gonna hard your game.
I'm gonna be in trouble if Idon't ask this last question.
I know spring is coming.
Do you guys have any promoscoming up or any promos for our
daybreak listeners should havea, like for our bunny sessions.
We should.
I know that.
I know that for like our bunniesthat we're doing at our studio,
(12:11):
it's just a regular session, so.
Um, they should have promos going on it.
Do you guys keep them in studiofor about a month, couple weeks?
Yes.
I think it's like a, like almost twomonths and then what, two months?
And then what you send 'em downto make stew or something out.
Oh my God.
He actually put 'em up for adoption too.
People like in daybreak or like any ofour sessions sign up, we have like a page.
So they can sign up and take a money home.
(12:33):
Oh look, they're doinggood in the community too.
Yeah.
This is our innovator of Daybreak,McKayla Larson with camera Shop manager.
Big changes happening over there.
Be ready for that.
Positive things.
Positive things.
Yep.
Changes should be positive.
Absolutely.
We're gonna see you again.
I just thought about it.
I do.
What's that?
Wish you just have specialguest host for Radio Dig break
and Caleb could fill in for me.
Yeah, I mean, we already kindof did that when we were like
(12:55):
in the room and going naturally.
You just work yourself out of a job.
I did.
I got a new job.
She did.
We'll see you guys next time.
See you next time.
