80% der 20 Millionen Menschen in Mali sind Muslime, 17% bezeichnen sich als Anhänger traditioneller afrikanischer Religionen, die restlichen 3-4% sind Christen. Die Zahl der Katholiken wird auf 300’000 bis 400'000 geschätzt und die allermeisten leben im Süden des Landes. Im Norden sind die Christen fast ausschliesslich staatliche Angestellte oder Touristen, da es dort für Christen zu gefährlich ist.
