Welcome to this shortcast episode. Today, we're diving deep into the ever-present struggle of burnout.
We all know the feeling: caught in a relentless cycle of expectations, responsibilities, and societal pressures. This constant grind can lead to a debilitating state – burnout.
Research on burnout is vast, and the personal stories are even more so. Burnout is real, and the feelings associated with it are agonizing. It impacts our lives, minds, and spirits.
Many describe burnout as feeling utterly drained – bone tired, heart tired, muscle tired, brain tired, and soul tired. It's the consequence of neglecting our humanity for too long.
Imagine carrying a thousand stones in a bag, constantly weighing you down, making it impossible to catch your breath in this relentless struggle to keep pace with a demanding and ever-changing world.
But burnout isn't just about exhaustion. It's about losing yourself in the noise of demands, losing touch with your passions and who you truly are.
A typical response to someone saying they're tired is, "Get some rest." But how do we rest our hearts and souls? Sleep alone doesn't cure burnout.
For some, simply lying on the couch isn't enough. The mind races, replaying anxieties and to-do lists. It's a vicious cycle.
I've been there. I'm a frequent visitor to this place. You might even begin to resent the things you once loved. You question your passions, priorities, and purpose, wondering how you ended up here.
This feeling of running on autopilot with constant brain fog, unable to slow down and process information, is all too familiar. We comfort ourselves with thoughts like, "If I can just get out of this month..."
Burnout thrives when cortisol, the stress hormone, takes control. Prolonged stress floods our bodies with cortisol, leading to high blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, and emotional turmoil.
Sound familiar? We all yearn for a semblance of balance, a reprieve.
Life requires a delicate dance between our various identities, each vying for attention in a world that often demands conformity. Be a researcher, an academic, a scholar, be smart, be productive – these labels become overwhelming.
What does it all mean? What does it look like?
The search for balance becomes essential as we wrestle with not only competing demands but also understanding and embracing our multifaceted identities.
Scholar Lisa Boleg reminds us there's no single reality when it comes to our intersecting identities. It's a tapestry woven from multiple experiences.
We struggle to maintain our authenticity under the weight of academic expectations. We're not just one thing in a siloed space. We bring our whole selves to this space, and when we don't, we feel fragmented.
There's hope, though. Paths to liberation and healing exist, but it starts with getting in tune with ourselves, listening to our bodies, and acknowledging all our interconnected aspects.
What does your body need right now? This is a holistic question with a powerful potential for self-discovery and empowerment.
Burnout can be a transformative force if we listen closely enough. It can break down barriers and foster growth. To counter burnout's grip, we can leverage oxytocin, the love hormone. Connect with others – go for a walk with a colleague, share a meal with a friend, and laugh together.
We're human, wired for connection.
Here are some additional tips:
Let's journal together! Consider these prompts:
Take time to process these prompts. Write them down. Give yourself space to navigate this journey.
Remember, we've all been through a lot – the pandemic, racial injustices, social unrest. We need to come together and create sustainable change.
Burnout thrives when we feed it. It takes courage and compassion to break free from its shackles.
We can redefine success and build a future free from burnout, loneliness, and isolation. Connection is the catalyst for change, but it begins with ourselves.
With compassion and grace, we can create a world that prioritizes well-being.

Ruthie's Table 4
For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
