Number 10. Welcome to The Will To Win, episode 10, where you'll be talking about
using breathwork to transform your life and business.
Welcome. Hello. It's amazing to be here. Thank you so much, Stephen.
It's a pleasure to have you on the show and you are very well experienced in the breathwork field.

(01:19):
You've studied and trained with many of the greats and you are a breathwork
teacher, trainer, speaker, coach, NLP master practitioner, hypnotherapist,
sound healer, L2, and a Recae therapist.
Wow. And you've been on some shows as well.
I sure have. And you were on Channel 7. What was the show called?

(01:46):
Destination Happiness. I did a very short piece on Sunrise and I have been on Triple M as well.
Amazing. and what would you say would be
one of the highlights of being on like tv
or the radio i think it it gives you this feeling of like wow i made it and

(02:08):
at the same time it's also extremely humbling because internally nothing has
changed you're still the same person exactly Exactly.
And it's almost like this, this really cool, I think I would say the feeling
of being invited and the dopamine and the rush of like being like,

(02:29):
oh my God, this is actually happening.
That is the most exciting time. The.
When you've actually been on TV and radio afterwards, you're kind of like,
oh, yeah, it's a little bit anticlimactic.
Yeah. Like, wow, I've done it.
But at the same time, I guess you humble yourself and you come back down to
earth and you realize, hey, I'm the same person I was when I first started as

(02:53):
what I am now, even though I've made it to such a, you know,
the next level in my business, in my,
you know, what you do, your purpose, your vision.
Exactly. yeah, it just becomes another vehicle through which you can express
the message that you're here to give on a whole new level, you know?

(03:13):
Amazing. Well, yeah, well, we'll get stuck into the questions.
So you obviously help people with anxiety.
You help with dealing with issues that revolve around scarcity, imposter syndrome.
I would like to ask you when it comes to imposter syndrome.
What's one of the biggest challenges people face when dealing with that?

(03:36):
How do they work through that?
Such an amazing question. I think people experience imposter syndrome and they
think that it means that they're doing something wrong.
So for those of you who don't know what it is, it's when you start to question, am I really good enough?
Can I actually do this? What if I fail?
You set a huge vision or a goal and then all of a sudden you find yourself in

(04:00):
a a position where you could actually achieve that, or you could really help
and make the impact that you want to.
And then all of a sudden, all these thoughts come out of nowhere,
like, who are you to do that?
Like, what do you, like, do you really think you're good enough?
Like, and that's what people call imposter syndrome, especially when you're
a facilitator or a coach or someone who is perceived as successful.

(04:23):
And you're teaching on these concepts that you literally are moving through
yourself. I think it's a really...
Interesting experience because people make it mean that they're doing something
wrong when the truth is if imposter syndrome is present in your life,
it means that you're doing something right.
It means that you're actually reaching the edge of your potential and you're

(04:45):
willing to step into the unknown and the arena of vulnerability so that you
can create real change in the world.
It's a powerful sign that you're on the right path. path so
when it comes to moving through that i think the first
thing is to notice first of all like yes i've
got imposter syndrome that means i'm actually growing and

(05:05):
number two is how can you regulate through the
stress response through your breath because typically
people go into like fight flight freeze
or appease and they start to play small and they start
to just go back into to what's comfortable in the little box of the
things I don't enjoy just to avoid having
to listen to those scary thoughts when the truth is if you can continue

(05:29):
to regulate your nervous system and come out of that stress response and just
expand by exhaling longer than your inhalation you put yourself back into a
parasympathetic nervous system state and then you have the clarity of mind to
think about where you're going instead of who you were and take that next action to move forward.
Wow, you've explained that really well.

(05:51):
And you spoke about this arena of vulnerability.
When you experience imposter syndrome, you are actually quite vulnerable.
So how do you work through those layers of vulnerability?
I mean, you sort of touched on it already, but how do you take your clients
through being vulnerable to being empowered, to being strong,

(06:14):
to being confident, to being able to take their coaching business to the next level?
Amazing. Yeah. So how we work with clients is by giving them the tools of breathwork
and then allowing them to use them as a vehicle of transformation so they can
step into their authentic expression and at the same time heal their community at scale.
And when they come into this space of vulnerability, imposter syndrome,

(06:37):
and they're feeling afraid that they're not good enough and they're not going
to be able to accomplish what they're here to accomplish, we look at three pillars. One is safety.
How safe do you actually feel to be in your expression? Clients are going to
mirror the level of safety you have in yourself.

(06:57):
And so we look at, cool, yes, what are the three levels of safety that you can
give somebody in a breath work?
But then on top of that, how safe are you in your body, in your expression?
And how can we use the breath to allow you to move through that so that you
have the confidence to really show up even with any old narratives that have

(07:18):
come up and are being released?
The second pillar, I would say, is speed, which is, you know,
I work with a lot of intuitives and they come to me and they're like,
oh, you know, I'm so intuitive when I'm supporting people and I know how to
help people and connect with them.
But when it comes to marketing and money and business, they go all weird and
all of a sudden they just go into their heads and they can't think and they

(07:39):
freeze and they're like, oh,
just become like weird and robotic and so what
we look at is like how do we integrate your intuition so that you can actually
continue to move forward with the tools that you have and continue helping your
people and of course the last one is is scale it's like when coaches first start
typically they're working one-on-one and we look at okay how can you get your,

(08:02):
transmission and your message to the masses and this is where breathwork becomes
really powerful for because you're able to share and create transformation on
a massive scale and there's no limitation to your power.
And I think, yeah, a lot of coaches kind of burn out and then they slow down.

(08:23):
They can't scale because they're so burnt out.
And so, yeah, one of the main things we do is support coaches to harness the
tools of breathwork so that doesn't happen.
And then you You can continue to scale endlessly from ease and grace. Wow. Ease and grace.
That certainly would make business a hell of a lot easier. That's for sure.

(08:49):
Yeah. Yeah. I think it's important as business owners to really tune into those
between moments so that we don't get caught in the hedonic treadmill of just hustling. Absolutely.
And so you can go from hustling to flowing. And you do talk about being in flow.
How do you help people increase flow in their life and business so it's overflowing,

(09:14):
so they're moving forward and they're constantly moving in an upward direction?
Yeah, perfect. I think the first
thing I would do is really understand the unique context of that person.
Everyone is so different, and we're all at different levels of consciousness
and awareness. And what works for one person won't work for the other.

(09:34):
So what I'll do is I'll tune into that person's awareness, their physiology,
their breath, and then we'll look at the three layers of breath work that we have.
We have functional breathing, which is how optimized your energy is.
And we do this by looking at, okay, what's your breath hold time?
What is your, what's your VO2 max? I have no idea. I have no idea what my breath hold time is. Cool.

(09:59):
So it's actually a super simple exercise and it takes like 30 seconds.
We can go through it later if you like, where you can actually look at your
real breath hold and what that indicates about your health and how efficient
your body is at turning oxygen into ATP or energy. So that's level one.
And then we've got level two, which is the state-changing breath works.
How do we take you from anxious and stressed out to calm, cool, collected?

(10:24):
Did how do we take you from low energy to high energy what
about when you're blocked or stuck what's the trauma that you get to
release in order to exponentially quantum leap what
was your question oh no that's
all good you were you were in i was in flow that's what we were talking about
okay that's right yeah we'd look at like yeah where are you already in terms

(10:48):
of your breath in terms of your stress levels um and in your business i think
that's a huge thing someone Someone who is doing 70K months needs something
different from someone who's doing 5K months, right?
So we look at that and then we look at the three layers of breathwork and what's
going to be most powerful for you to create that flow state.
Amazing. And yeah, because you can go from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset.

(11:13):
When you're in flow, you're going to experience more abundance.
When you're not, you're going to experience a lot more scarcity.
Scarcity so how do you like close
that gap between going from scarcity
to abundance like you talk obviously you've
spoken about steps that you take people through are there

(11:34):
some key elements or some i guess principles that you can share around that
yeah absolutely you're okay to to go vulnerable here yeah go for it all right
so i think when When people come to work with me on the outside,
they're coming for breathwork training, right?
But on that deeper level, they're really wanting to tune into their heart and

(11:56):
soul. Like what people are really looking for is peace and fulfillment.
So what we do is you have to look at the places in your life where you have
pushed peace and fulfillment and abundance and love away.
And most people aren't aware that that's what they're doing,
but they're doing it really unconsciously.

(12:16):
And usually the reason for that is because growing up, either in this life or
even in past lives, they had this moment where they experienced feeling really unsafe.
So, let's look at my own story. So, I was raised in a pretty happy family,
except that my stepdad was sexually abusive.

(12:37):
And so, because of that, it's almost like I linked love with fear, with shame, with panic.
And also, safety.
Safety got linked to dread, right? And so, then growing up as an adult,
it was like, oh, I wanted to make more money.
Or I wanted to work with more clients or have those deeper relationships,

(13:02):
but I couldn't help but sabotage it because I also had connected those experiences
to shame, fear, panic, and dread.
And so it's like as soon as I would get closer to feeling abundant in love or
money or anything, my instincts, my animal instincts, like the energy that was
locked in my body was like, no way, no way are we doing this.
I need to sabotage this now. and on

(13:26):
a really grand scale like you know it can look like that but
for some people who haven't experienced let's say
trauma in their childhood it can be something as simple as you know
being the the quiet shy boy in the playground or being having a mum that just
was working so hard that you you never experienced feeling supported and then

(13:46):
you grow up and you have all these stories about how unless you work hard,
unless you accomplish X,
unless you suffer, you don't get love or you don't get money.
And so when it comes to cleaning up these scarcity stories, what we're really
cleaning up is where you are sabotaging love and pushing away what you ultimately

(14:08):
want because some part of you,
some small part of you believes that you only deserve what you've gotten in the past.
And until you change that.
Nothing's going to change so it's really it's really having a moment of awakening,

(14:29):
or a spiritual awakening that enables you
to tap into that and work through that
trauma that pain that struggle and i
guess that's what you do with the people you work with sometimes you know sometimes
people come to me with things to work through and sometimes it's actually just
a really beautiful experience of opening to more love but with the breath work

(14:50):
you know that we We focus on mostly it's the like open mouth breathing,
which decreases your carbon dioxide so that you go into a altered state of consciousness
and an altered state of physiology.
So basically we shift the oxygen ratio in your brain and then your prefrontal
cortex switches off and you're able to actually drop into your,

(15:12):
your emotion and your memories and your
insight and your intuition and your your theta brainwave state and in
the state yeah a lot of stuff can come
up and be alchemized and you mentioned the
theta brainwave state like what happens
in that state so and for perspective sake we've got beta which is like that

(15:34):
really high energy problem solving state and if you're super high you're probably
anxious and worrying about things and creating more problems if you're in the
middle you're actually problem solving and it's productive and if you're down low where a lot
of society is then you're just kind of like thinking a lot
about meaningless stuff that doesn't matter right yeah people
often do do that i mean um and then the next

(15:56):
level below that is theta sorry beta alpha
alpha is kind of like when you're so present and you're
like playing basketball or you're dancing or you're
you're in this almost like flow state where you're so present with an activity
and then the next level is theta and this is where you start to go into to that

(16:16):
really intuitive space where your brain is created and can make connections
and links that it normally wouldn't,
can solve problems that are seated in your unconscious,
but consciously you haven't actually accessed yet.
It's quite an insight, I must say. Yeah, I mean, I could talk all day on this
stuff. It's so powerful.
And so, yeah, a lot of breath work comes back to how you manage your thoughts, your emotions,

(16:45):
and when you change the breath you're able to tap into another part of yourself,
and that makes the change process a lot
easier is that right yes a lot of people try and change by just thinking harder
but what they don't realize is that the level of thinking that they have is
what's maintaining the problem and when they can switch out of the thinking

(17:08):
mind and actually going into feeling in the body,
then they can step outside the problem and solve it on a much deeper level from the roots.
Rather than trying to climb a tree and start at the top, you've got to go right
down to the roots, start at the bottom.
Change never happens at the top. Yeah, exactly.
Incremental change happens at the top. Exponential change happens when you start at the bottom.

(17:33):
Wow. Are you able to sort of expand on those two concepts from incremental change
and exponential change?
Okay. So I love the tree analogy.
Like if you're making incremental changes then
you're making changes from the top down
so you're just trimming the branches you're trimming the leaves it takes

(17:53):
you ages just seeing a little bit of a little bit
of progress so you're like yes okay and keep going but then the leaves keep
growing back and you're like oh it's exhausting so you just no no but you just
keep going and keep going keep going and you get these like tiny little changes
every time when you go for exponential change,

(18:14):
you go straight from the bottom up and you go to the roots and,
you go and dig those roots out or you go and put fertilizer into those roots.
So it completely changes the way the tree shows up and you get this kind of
quantum result, which on the outside appears like it just happened out of nowhere.
But really it was because you did that deep work straight away.

(18:37):
And I think another way that we can frame this is people have this tendency
to fixate on one strategy. So they're like, you know what?
I'm great at NLP. I'm great at mindset, affirmations.
And they get really associated with that particular thing.
And they go so hard on it and they get all these little changes.
And initially they get big changes, but then the changes start to slow down

(18:59):
and it gets to the point of diminishing returns, but they still keep chipping away, chipping away.
And before they know it, they're just not really, they're just plateauing, right?
So this is when they shift and they actually go and try something that's completely
brand new, vulnerable, potentially uncomfortable for them. and they take on
breastwork, a somatic practice.

(19:20):
And all of a sudden, there's this huge quantum shift because you're moving from
one side of the paradox to another.
So I'm talking about this in terms of personal development now.
It's like breastwork and NLP. And by the way, I'm both certified in breastwork and NLP.
They're kind of like opposite sides of the coin. One is about mind and one of them is about body.

(19:40):
And people get so associated over here and they just think, I just got to keep
going and try harder to control my thoughts and try harder to adjust my language.
When really, if they allowed themselves to swing to the other side,
they would collapse the whole spectrum of who they are and then get a quantum
leap or an exponential lift.

(20:01):
They would double their progress and leave that spectrum behind.
And this is how it works. Similarly, you can get super addicted to just doing somatic work.
And then they're like, I just need to feel my trauma more. I just need to heal more.
It's like no swing to
the other side collapse the spectrum level up does that make sense that makes
a lot of sense you're you're constantly balancing out your your mind with your

(20:26):
i guess other parts of you that you need to to work on so yeah it's the you're
swinging between two different sides.
And trying to find a balance between the two. And so obviously breath work is
something that is evolving. It's grown so much.

(20:48):
When it comes to taking breaths, like how do you guide people through like using
their breath so that they get into that state,
that lower, that state where they can, you know, They really go deep inside
their own minds at an unconscious level.
Amazing. So it's a very simple technique.

(21:10):
It's breathing in and out of the mouth only and focusing on breath into the belly, not the chest.
When you do this, there's no pause at the bottom and no pause at the top.
And you're increasing the volume of air that's going into your lungs.
And because your body's always in balance, it's going to release carbon dioxide

(21:31):
at the same rate. And that's going to be too much carbon dioxide,
which means that it will drop into your non-thinking mind.
I could do like a really short, maybe three minutes, if you like,
so that people can experience it.
Yeah, why not? Let's go ahead. Just so you know, sometimes this can feel a little

(21:51):
bit uncomfortable because it's new.
You and then on top of that sometimes things
can actually start to come up and energy can start to move immediately now if
you do a longer session and i have heaps of free sessions that i can send to
your people as well steve you'll probably have a release but in this three practice

(22:13):
you're probably just going to experience feeling a little bit altered or different.
The key is to remember that anything that happens in the session is probably
the least important part of your training.
Like when you really do breathwork, what you're looking for is the results outside
of your session. That makes sense?

(22:36):
Yeah, amazing. Okay. Yeah, definitely. So what we're going to do,
first of all, I'll show you the technique.
So just like loosen up your jaw a little bit. Just open and close your mouth.
Cool. and then you're going to let your jaw drop and have your mouth open and
breathe so that you've got a hand on your belly button yeah that's right and
your then your shoulders are still.

(23:00):
Amazing ready now when we do this we're going to loosen in through here as well
so imagine that the back of your throat is really loose and there's no pause
at the bottom and no pause at the top,
so what i'm going to get you to do as well steve is it possible to
mute your microphone just for this just so that there's
no rushy air coming through your mic while you're doing the
breath work too i'm not sure how that could work

(23:21):
it might actually turn off the sound for
the recording itself so but i will
try and keep my distance from the mic so that the air doesn't over like i think
steve's breath can be a guide for you as well so that would be really powerful
and so i'm just gonna yeah i'm gonna get you guys to just get into a comfortable seat and.

(23:47):
If you're seated on a chair you can place your feet
flat on the ground and then
place your hands either palms
down or palms up on your thighs if you
want to you can lie down and then
you're just going to gently gently close your eyes

(24:08):
notice how you're feeling notice
any thoughts and know that during
this practice thoughts may come and go
and you just move your attention back to
the sensation of your breathing at any time take one breath in through the nose

(24:29):
belly rise and let out a sound or sigh on your exhale and just sink a little bit deeper.
Hmm. Let's see if you can soften between the brows and loosen the jaw and lower
the shoulders and then let go of any hole on the belly.

(24:54):
Yeah. And we'll start the breath work.
We're going to do 10 breaths and then a short hold,
10 breaths, a short hold, 10 breaths,
and then hold as long long as you can and so when you're ready allow your mouth
to fall open relax the corners of the mouth and begin the breath in stay with

(25:18):
the breath expand the belly relax the shoulders,
and on your next inhale you're going to hold at the top sucking a little bit
more air exhale with a sigh, and hold down for an hour,
keeping your eyes closed,

(25:40):
just loosen through your breathing muscles, breath again, 10 breaths,
inhale in through the mouth, and stay with the breath, so can you loosen through
the back of this throat, and oh dear, inhaling as much air as you can. Amazing.
And on your next inhale, hold at the top. It's like in a little bit more air. And exhale with a sigh.

(26:08):
And hold at the bottom.
When you're ready, a final round, opening your mouth, inhale.
And stay with the breath, deep and full.
And if your mind wanders, go ahead. come back
to the breath and on your next inhale take a breath all the way up to the top

(26:32):
the fullest breath you have so far and when you're ready to let go exhale and keep squeezing,
and if there's any
breath left in your lungs squeeze that out
too and keep holding body soften through

(26:53):
belly chest lungs face hold
any longer take a breath in through the
nose and exhale allow yourself to feel however you feel breath is natural and
normal you might like to ask yourself question what does my intuition want me to know,

(27:19):
Maybe you've got an image or a word, a feeling.
Slowly become aware of the pressure from the ground or sea.
Notice the touch of air on your skin, the gentle kiss of your lashes.
And when you're ready, you can wiggle your fingers and toes.

(27:43):
Take one more breath in through the nose to honor yourself for your practice.
Just exhale with a sigh and
basically however feels good
and then gently gently flutter open your eyes and come back to the space knowing

(28:05):
that whatever you experienced was exactly on what you needed to go where you were meant to go.
Wow i feel very relaxed very
at peace very calm yeah yeah
it's amazing for being the the guide for the breath on this session and for

(28:30):
those of you that are listening you might like to do this practice at 10 breaths
20 breaths and then 30 breaths we did condense it a little bit just for time for this podcast,
but it can be really powerful to extend those times and, uh,
and definitely make sure that you're, you know, you're allowing yourself to

(28:51):
just come back as in when it feels good for you. Wow.
Thank you so much, Bert, for taking us through this.
Breath work process it certainly calms your mind and yeah i feel like i'm more free i'm more open.

(29:12):
And i'm definitely in a much higher state of mind especially when i feel like
i don't have time or when i feel like i've just i'm just too busy and chaotic
that those are the times when if i I just stop for two minutes, even just two minutes.
It is game-changing in terms of noticing what is the most important thing for

(29:35):
me to do right now and finding that inner peace and calm. Most definitely.
Well, coming towards the end of the podcast,
we've gone through a lot to do with breath work and covered many different parts
of the mind and the spiritual side and how they both impact our lives.

(30:03):
And yeah, it's been such a good experience.
And before we sort of finish this recording,
is there any piece of wisdom, advice or suggestions that you would like to share
something that would really help people in their journey,

(30:25):
to becoming one with themselves and to be
able to awaken their minds
to the higher power to embrace their
spiritual side like what two pieces one will be strategy and the other will
be energetics so when it comes to strategy if you're just starting in breast
work the biggest piece is to understand that when you're doing breath work,

(30:52):
it's kind of like doing reps at the gym.
So people think that when you start breath work, you're going to immediately
feel good. And it's great that you did, Steve, but not everybody does.
And so, yeah, you must be tapped in.
Yeah.
I must be a natural. For those of you that, you know, maybe struggled a little

(31:14):
bit, just know that, you know, when you go to the gym, you're looking to access
that deeper potential and strengthen your muscles. And so it can feel a little bit uncomfortable.
And actually at the gym, you generally, if you feel pain, you're like, yeah, I did a great job.
And a lot of the time when you get to that point of failure,
you know, in your reps and your and your muscles fail, you're like, woohoo.

(31:35):
And I'd love for your audience to treat brain fog in the same way.
It's like, if you're experiencing discomfort or pain, just know that you're
actually releasing it. And that's a really good sign.
You've been pushed to the edge of your potential and whatever has been holding
you back in your body is actually being let go of in those moments.
So even setting aside five minutes, I know for very busy entrepreneurs,

(32:00):
owners they're like five minutes is like like how
yeah yeah add
that on top of like the daily report are you serious with my team xyz and and
i'll share a story about a seven-figure business owner that contacted me because

(32:21):
he was like i can't do it like five he's like i just feel like i'm falling asleep.
I hate it. It's boring. Why do I have to do this?
Now, after working through all that, he has upped his daily practice to 20 minutes
and he teaches it as well, right?
Because it has profoundly changed his life.
And so my thing would be, even if you don't have time, make two minutes of every single day.

(32:47):
And then when you're ready, five minutes and then 10 minutes is actually all
I do every day, and it is game-changing for me. So even that little practice
that we did earlier, yeah.
And the second piece, so that's the strategy piece. The second piece is I would
love to speak into this because I know every time I meet a business owner, I'm inspired.

(33:10):
I never get into business just to make money. Like we want to make money because money is amazing.
Yeah. But that's not why they're doing it. Of course.
The piece I want to speak to is the more you can slow down and come back to
presence, the the more in tune with your why you're going to be.

(33:30):
And the more in alignment with your why you are, the more you access that flow state.
And the more you access that flow state, the more you can create these quantum
leaps of growth so that you can really show up in the way that you want to and serve at scale.
I think what happens is we get so caught up in all the different strategies

(33:52):
that coaches tell us to do. 100K in 90 days.
You're just going to send 300 hundred dms every day you just
need to fix your vsl like your video sales letter
whatever it is right like this strategy strategy strategy and yes
strategy is important and i use it but ultimately what's
really going to create that flow state for you is coming back
to presence coming back to your breath and tuning into why this is important

(34:16):
to you because if you know why you will never stop you will never ever stop
and nothing will hold you back and every mission that is backed by service always
succeeds 100% every time. Incredible.
Thank you so much for sharing these last two elements to help people in their life and business.

(34:40):
What you've shared has been very, I guess, beneficial for anyone who's listening.
And I've certainly learned a lot, things that I didn't know.
I've certainly been awakened. awakened and you certainly know your stuff when
it comes to breath work so well done so,
Before we finish up, what I'll just ask you is how can our guests,

(35:05):
anyone who listens to this podcast, episode 10, how can they get in contact
with you on social media? I'm Berenice Tan.
And on Spotify, you can actually find about 10 breastwork practices on there
for free that are between 5 and 15 minutes long. Yeah.
Yeah. And it's like an amazing. Wow. Say again.

(35:29):
I can't believe I haven't got my hands on those yet. What am I doing?
I don't know. I got to start with the two minutes of breath work, I think. Yes.
And then I'll work my way up. And they're designed for entrepreneurs.
So designed for people who are just go, go, go, high achievers.

(35:52):
They're bite-sized. So you can actually just put it into your break,
put it in while you're waiting for coffee, while you're waiting at the post
office or anything like that.
So yeah, so those are the ways they can get in touch with me.
We've got a breathwork teacher training as well coming up in July.
And I do love, I really love to hear people's feedback.
So if you do go to explore any of the breathwork, please message me.

(36:16):
And if you'd like a free 60-minute breathwork journey as well,
I've got plenty of those banked up to send you. So feel free to just get in touch.
Fantastic. Well, we've reached the end of the podcast.
Burr, you have certainly been very knowledgeable.
Grateful that you've taken time out of your schedule to be on this show to share

(36:39):
your knowledge and change lives through the Power of Breath work.
So thank you so much. Yeah, I'm so grateful that we connected.
Music.
