a very proud graduate of the Universityof Texas. I'm a third generation UT.
My son, one of my threesons, graduated UT to make him
a fourth generation, but another oneof my sons graduated from University of Houston.

our sister station a few hours. We got that covered for you. Garf
is the nickname we are going totalk about this new fund it's it's very

(03:53):
tough being under embargo, and inthis industry and in a lot of the
industries in the media, you getto know things before they happen, before
products are released, before news isleaked or whatever, and you kind of
have to sign you know, halfof David's in DA's non disclosure agreements of

(04:14):
okay, I promise not to tellanybody, and when products are really interesting
and cool, and when the releasedate is relatively a long time, which
in this case it was easily threeweeks. Sometimes I have an NDA for
forty eight hours, and it's nothard keeping a secret. But for the
past three weeks I have been kindof keeping a secret. I was able

(04:36):
to tease it to some extent ifyou follow me on social media. I
went to New York. Actually I'vebeen to New York twice in about two
weeks. I went to New Yorkat the end of September for a phone
launch where a lot of technology journalistor technology people who cover the technology industry.
We're going to call it that theywe were up there to receive and

(05:00):
learn about a brand new phone, not from Apple, not from Samsung.
Wait a minute, Garth, youactually mean there's other companies who make phones,
Yes, there are. It isfrom a company called one Plus.
It is a Chinese company. Theyhave been around for a while and they
have released their very first foldable phone. Folks for three plus weeks. If
you have seen me, you mayhave seen it. It's something different.

(05:25):
You know this is not an iPhone. You know this is not a Samsung.
But this is a foldable phone.Everybody except Apple has a foldable phone
right now. Do you need afoldable phone? That's up to you.
The point is when you see thisthing, it stands out and I've gotten
asked several times and I say, okay, well I will show you.
You cannot touch it, you cannotmention that you've that anybody has. You've

(05:45):
seen me how it and they've beenvery so far, so good. I
have not gotten any lawyers from onePlus to call me to tell me about
cease and desist. The embargo liftedtwo days ago. The reviews are out.
I have had plenty of weeks toactually give you my thoughts. I
am going to give you that update. I'll do that next segment. So
stand by in about five minutes andI will let you know if this phone
is the way to go should yoube looking for one this holiday season or

(06:09):
just wanted to upgrade or get somethingdifferent. It is obviously it's an Android
base phone because it ain't Apple. So there's nothing wrong with Android, because
I am an Android guy. SoI'll tell you about that. I will
tell you some other news what's goingon in the world of tech and streaming,
because I absolutely the way that thenews and media delivered right now is
something that I cover. It's inmy wheelhouse. Netflix they announced they had

(06:32):
a big private press conference. Theyactually had their Wall Street earnings come out
the other day. They announced avery big growth in revenue and users,
massively big. They this past quarterthey gained you ready for this, I
don't know if you saw this thing, nine million new subscribers. They're already

(06:56):
the biggest streaming service in the world. They gained nine million new subscribers in
the third quarter. And they reportedthird quarter revenue revenue not profit, eight
point five billion dollars. That's upfrom seven point nine billion in the year
ago quarter. The profit rose twentypercent. They made one point six billion

(07:20):
dollars in profit. How did theydo it? Well, it's quite simple.
Have you noticed that if you've triedto borrow, We're gonna use that
word borrow someone's password. For Netflix. Over the past few months, it
hadn't been working. Netflix made thebold move of cutting and I told you
the six plus months ago was gonnahappen, a bold move of cutting down

(07:42):
on password sharing. Pretty much.If you have a Netflex account, you
were allowed to use it in yourhome on multiple TVs, but you cannot
share it No longer can you useyour ex wife's Netflix account, which is
why I haven't watched Netflix in aboutthree months. So if you're cut off
because you can't share a password, what do you do? You suck it
up and you subscribe to the service. Hence nine million new subscribers. It's

(08:07):
gonna be Netflix. Congratulations to them. They also have some live They announced
they're doing some live sports. MemberAmazon already does live NFL sports. If
you saw last Thursday Night's Jaguar Saintsgame. They're going to their very first
live sporting event is going to bea golf tournament, and that is going
to be in live. If youhave to televise just kind of a made

(08:28):
up golf tournament, I think youhave to do it from the Win Hotel
golf Course in Las Vegas. Theywill be doing that. It's called the
Netflix Cup. Hell, they're notshy, and it's gonna be the same
weekend as Formula one November fourteenth, and they're going to tear up Formula one
drivers and some PGA Tour golfers andthey're going to play a match play tournament.
Because Vegas ain't already going to bea crazy show. And I've been

(08:52):
very He's careful with my words thatweekend we're now going to throw in a
golf tournament. But you know,if you have Netflix, you canna be
able to watch that. This isnot a Netflix say commercial. I wish
it was. I wish it sponsoredmy show. I'm more than happy to
tell you what's coming on Amazon,Prime, Hulu, Disney Plus and everything
else. But I am going totake a break and when we come back,
people, i've been sitting in Mymouth has been taped and shut,

(09:13):
and I've been sneaking around with acamera. I'll give you the full review,
my thoughts on the new one plusopened the new foldable phone that you
may be interested right here on theHigh Tech Texans Show, Mister Miguel Garfield

(09:33):
is the name. It's called theHigh Tech Textan Show. Happy Saturday to
you. Hope you're listening live.If you're listening live, there really still
is AM Radio, which you willhear at about three hours right here at
the University of Houston Cougars versus myUniversity of Texas Longhorns, right here on
nine fifty. So thank you forlistening live. Should you not be listening
live, you probably are actually listeningto it on podcast. iHeartRadio. That's

(09:56):
the way to listen to the showand all our shows everywhere around the country,
if not the world. At yourconvenience. Callum Reid, how are
you my man? He's pushing thebuttons and entering phone calls. He will
put this up on the podcast rightwhen we are finished, so you can
listen to your heart's content and listento some of my thoughts and reviews of
products. Yes, and technology, but pretty much. I got cars.

(10:18):
I'm on a rip. I justgot back from another trip earlier this week
where I was reviewing a brand newcar, not under embargo, not under
it was the Hyundai just came outwith a new small suv, the Hyundai
Kona. They upgraded it I wasin Charleston, South Carolina for that never
have been to the state of SouthCarolina until earlier this week. It's a

(10:39):
lovely town. We'll get into thatin another segment, but right now I
could finally talk about this thing underembargo. Couldn't say a word for three
or three and a half four weeks. I have had a brand new phone
from a company you may not haveheard of, but it is called one
Plus O N E p l US. You can go one Plus. It

(11:01):
is a Chinese company that manufacturer's phones, and they've been around quite a while
and they've had a number of interestingphones. I've never actually had one.
I've heard some good reviews, butflew up to New York about three or
four weeks ago with some other ilkin my industry, technology writers and bloggers
and people who cover the industry, met with the designers and the engineers,

(11:22):
and they gave us a brand newone plus open. It is one plus
very first foldable phone. And youknow why, because most of every company
is putting out a foldable phone.Samsung has done it for a while five
years right now, the Samsung,as you know, I was in South
Korea July when they rolled out andintroduced the Flip five and the Fold five,

(11:48):
very good phones. I'm a Sansungfan, yes, really haven't played
with any more other manufacturers, becausethe hell of Apple's even gonna acknowledge me.
I don't even know what number ofApples on screw them. I think
Monoraella makes it a Google Pixel.Haven't played with the Google Pixel. I
think I've seen one of those thingsheard they're nice. They just came out
with the foldable phone too. ButI'm here to talk about my thoughts about

(12:09):
the brand new one plus open.Where do I start? Well, I'm
going to compare it to the SamsungFold five because that is what I had
been playing with before I had tosend it back for a few months.
I like folds. I think they'reneat. I think the flip is cooler

(12:31):
than the fold because it flips up. It's a clamshell phone. However,
one of the reasons that I wascarrying around the fold five, the larger
one that opens up like a book, the foldable phone is because it's got
a better camera Samsung Flip five is. I love the form factor, just
I use the camera in the videosso much. Just doesn't have near the
quality of a larger physical camera likethe Samsung Flip five. Let's now go

(12:56):
over to talk about the one plusOpen. It's thinner and lighter than the
Samsung Fold phone. It is ifyou look at the screen size. There's
a front screen that opens up.You open it up like a book,
and it becomes a larger phone. We call it a fablet combination between a

(13:18):
phone and a tablet. The sizeon this the front screen. I like
it a lot. In fact,if I gave you this phone, or
if you see the one plus openand you look at it as it's folded
up, if you will, it'sabout the same size as your typical phone,
yes, an iPhone, yes,any other non foldable phone. So

(13:39):
you can just sit there and useit like a phone from the front screen,
do everything you need. You've gotyour icons, you could talk on
the phone perfecto. Love it.It's a bit wider than the Samsung Fold,
the Samsung Fold five, it's kindof got a relatively thin front screen.

(14:00):
And then you open it up andno, obviously it doubles in size.
So the one plus Open is largerin the front and it looks like
a phone. The secret is thatat this point you open up and now
you've got doubles its size, andthe screen quality is really really nice.
It is not it's a form ofol ED, and I talk about OLED

(14:24):
a lot, which is organic lightemitting DIO, which no one really cares
about. It's not OLDED. It'ssomething called LTPO, which is kind of
a form of O lead, whichis like a TV screen has led.
It's a form and you have tohave a few different things. But one
plus did a really interesting job ofmaking this work. It is extremely bright.
In fact, they say it's oneof the brightest phones out there.

(14:46):
In terms of the display, there'sanother term that I can confuse you.
It's called hurts h Z hurts. This thing can actually change the hurts up
to one hundred and twenty hurts, which is really the refresh rate all the
way down to one. And soin terms of the screen, I really
think they did a really nice jobOne plus did of getting the colors right.

(15:09):
It's very bright, the screen size, it all works well. So
in terms of the experience of physicallyholding it and carrying it around, maybe
you put it in your purse.Ladies and dudes like me, I don't
I put it to my either myfront right pocket or maybe I've been keeping
this in one of my back pockets. It's relatively thin, thinner than that
Samsung. So when I'm sitting downand it can bend, it's been through

(15:31):
bend infoldable test. It actually doesstand up. Matter of fact, speaking
of stand up, because it's amoving part and it folds open and closed,
there's obviously things that could go wrongversus a non foldable phone or a
non flippable phone. One plus saysthey have tested the open and fold over
one million times, one million times, and that's compared to Samsung's two hundred

(15:56):
thousand times that they actually say onemillion times. This is open and close,
and it's all because of this interestinghinge. There's a hinge, and
they actually took a lot of partsout of these hens because the hinge is
the secret to actually making sure thatit doesn't break, doesn't get any dust,
doesn't get any water. You know, they've even put holes, little
tiny pin holes in this hinge justin case there's a little moisture, little

(16:19):
water that it could drain out.Instead of having hundreds of parts of the
hinge, they have I believe sixtynine exact little parts to actually make this
hinge work. And it's nice becauseif the phone actually snaps close. As
a matter of fact, I wantto try to do it right now for
you listen closely. That's me closingit, opening it, closing it again.

(16:40):
It snaps and it Unlike a fewof the other foldable phones in the
market, this hinge can actually openup not just to ninety degrees, but
everything from one hundred degrees one hundredand ten hundred and twenty. It can
actually stop at different points versus someother folds of the market. You can
go to ninety degrees and then afterthat, all of a sudden, book
the spring pops open and to goall the way open to one hundred and
eight degrees of life flat, ifyou will. So they really did a

(17:03):
really nice design job on the outside. Uh, the weight again is very
good. The refresh rate, thescreen. I've been through some of this
stuff. We're up against the breakoverhere. So I'm gonna carry this into
the next segment and I'm gonna talkabout things that I'm telling you, maybe
one or two things that I reallywish one plus would have thought to put
in here. Probably if they addedthese. Maybe they'll do it in version

(17:26):
two of the Open two. There'sa few things that are missing that you're
gonna find a lot of other phones. It's not the cheapest phone out there.
But I'm gonna's call the TASE whenwe come back on the other side,
I'm gonna tell you how much itcost. You can get these things
now. You can get them directlyon the website, which is OnePlus.
Just google it. I believe youcan get him a best bot. You
can even get a few hundred dollarsdiscount. If you trade in any phone,

(17:47):
any phone whatsoever, they're gonna giveyou a two hundred dollars discount.
But it's the software. It's multitasking. And again, if I write a
story, and I may actually haveto write a story about this on my
website high tech Texting dot com,the lead, if not the if not
the headline, or the title ofthe story would be for ADHD folks like

(18:08):
myself who multitask. The software inthe way they've designed it to optimize.
That fold out screen is pretty darnamazing. One, two, three different
apps can be displayed on this thing, and different configures, so you can
have all these windows open they reallydid optimize that. They really did a

(18:30):
nice job with the software. I'lltell you about that on the other side,
as we continue the high Tech textand show reviewing the new one plus
open fund continuating, and we thankyou for continuing to listen to the High
Tech Text Show. I am Michael. I hope everybody's having a good day.
I'm going to continue. Very rarelydo I carry over a topic between

(18:53):
segment to segment, only in instanceswhere I really break down and review some
products that I've been playing with fora while. In this case, I
want to continue the discussion that we'rehaving with a brand new cell phone that
was just launching on sale two daysago. However, thanks to the nice
folks at one plus o Naplus thatis the hardware manufacturer. It's a Chinese

(19:15):
based company that makes cell phones. For the past three, maybe almost four
weeks right now, I have secretlyhad this in my possession and testing it.
I couldn't tell anybody in the worldif you saw me out in the
while taking pictures with the weird lookingkind of object. And I haven't even
described the camera part of this thing. That's what makes it stand out.
That's what I've been using. However, embargo has lifted. It's on sale

(19:37):
as of October nineteenth. It ison sale directly from one Plus. You
can also get it, I believeit best Buy and Amazon, and by
the way, they're all unlocked.You don't specifically need to get a T
mobile or an AT and T orsomething like that, which is another nice
plus also, but I gave youabout a five to six minute play by
play of the hardware itself, likethe size, even without unfolding it.

(20:03):
Again. This is one Plus's veryfirst foldable phone, because foldables allegedly are
the way to go. And Ijust got an email during the break Garth
enjoying your breakdown because I've been hearingabout this new one plus really interesting on
your thoughts. But how does itfold? Does the glass break in half?
And is there a crease that youcan see? It's a great question.
This is from Brian Brian's on theNorth side of Houston. Whoever thought

(20:25):
that glass could be bendable? Well, there's a lot of companies who make
bendable glass right now, and thisis they have a special coding on most
all of them to make sure thatif it chatters or something is not going
to crack. OnePlus does that too. I've been using the Samsung Flip five
in the Fold five for several months. I got it, I was able
to go to South Korea. Verynice of them to fly some journalists out

(20:47):
there. The big launch saw theSamsung plant respectable company. I've been a
long Samsung fan. Not paid.I wish they did pay me. Nothing
I do is pay One Plus didn'ttip pay me to talk about this.
None of these companies do. Iam your guy who's gonna give you the
good, the bad, and theugly and the nasty. But the Samsung,
if you open it for years, this they're on the It took it

(21:07):
took Samsung about five years the fifthversion, to make a foldable phone that
was absolutely flat when closed. Beforethis version for Samsung, there was a
little tiny wedge near the hinge justit just wasn't one hundred percent flat.
Samsung got it five tries later. One Plus they did it on their first
try. This is a very thin, very light, very flat foam when

(21:30):
you open it up, and justlike the Samsung too. I opened my
Samsung Fold five up, I cansee in the middle a little tiny crease
of that screen because it's it's foldable, you hold it up in certain lights,
maybe there's a reflection. One plus, I gotta tell you what,
it's even more subtle. You lookat this thing and at some point after

(21:51):
the first hour or two like that, you don't even know what crease it's
it's gone. Maybe if you againhold it to a certain light or something
comes on the screen where the screenis too bright, yeah, maybe you
could see. It creates very verynice job. So anyway, the answer
to that, uh, and Brian, thank you very much for that email.
No, there's not a big issuewhatever, and it's only going to
get better. This one did getbetter because this is thinner and lighter,

(22:15):
and I went over some of thehardware parts too. It's a very impressive
top to bottom phone. And Iwill tell you give you some more things.
The battery it's a and again i'mgonna throw out some terms if you're
not regularly listening. I try tokeep things on the reel side, because
that's what I do here on thehigh tech text and show. I keep
it reels. It's a forty eighthundred milliamp battery and pretty impressive battery life.

(22:41):
I had no problem getting through anentire day, watching some videos,
taking photos, and doing my textingand whatever generally we do every day.
I want to talk about the battery. Those are there's one or two things
that probably I would change and maybeone Plus has it up trick up,
leave not to put everything on theirvery first version, this does not have

(23:03):
wireless charging. And when they mentionedthat in the press conference a few weeks
ago New York and all of ourlittle technology, little bloggers and journalists together,
we kind of I heard a littlegasp in the room. How could
you release a phone that doesn't havea wireless charger right now? Listen.
I the PR folks kind of gotaround it. But what they did is

(23:25):
instead of making a wireless one Plusis really big into fast fast charging.
So in the box they include afast charger. I'm gonna give you a
number. It's gonna blow your mindbecause you don't know what I'm talking about,
but it's a sixty seven watt charger. Generally you're gonna charge your phone
at twenty watts or so. Thisis a sixty seven watt charger that comes

(23:48):
in the box, and it comeswith a with a us USBA to USBC
cord. It's included in the boxand then you yes, you're gonna have
to plug it into charges thing, but you can go from zer road to
maybe twenty five percent charge probably inseven to eight minutes. Fifteen minutes later
you're maybe up to fifty percent orso like that. You could you could
you could charge the whole thing inunder forty five minutes. So it's a

(24:11):
fast charger and that's something that oneplus kind of lauded to me. It's
one thing they have missing. Maybethey're going to wait to next year,
who knows, because by my bedat night, I have a wireless charger
and most all phones right now, yes, your iPhones and some of the
sam you know, the recent Samsungphones and the Google pickles of phones.
You could just place it down onyour charger and it wirelessly charges all the

(24:36):
new cars that are reviewed pretty much, you know, and if they're relatively
you know, kind of mid leveland certainly higher that they have a wireless
charger somewhere in that car. Notgonna be able to do that with the
one player. You're gonna need tobring that USBC or USB to plug it
in. So there you go.That's that's one issue I had with that,

(24:56):
but I will tell you why. It's certainly when you plug it in
and fires up fast waterproofing. Thishas an IPX four Again, that was
another kind of gasp in the room. IPX four means it will handle water,
splashes, splashes. You look atother phones in the market, and
I'm gonna go back because I amvery familiar with the Samsung. They're foldable.

(25:18):
It's ipx eight. That means itcan handle a drop into water.
Don't keep it in that law,but you could drop Samsung. The point
is, don't get the one plusopen wet, and if you do,
dry it off as soon as possible. A bit surprising too. So what

(25:41):
else do you want to talk about? The camera? This is where it
changes. The one plus Open hasfive cameras, including a thirty two megapixel
fixed focus main camera on that frontscreen and a twenty megapixel fixed focus camera
on the inside screen. But herecomes the crazy stuff. This is where
you notice it on the back. They got together with Hasselblood anyone hasselblode tough

(26:07):
to get a better name in theworld of cameras for generations than Hasslelive.
There's a main rear camera system, and it's got the Hasseblode name right there.
It's got one, two, three, three lenses out there. One
is a sixty four megapixel telephoto,a forty eight megapixel ultra wide camera,
and a forty eight megapixel main sensor. And it's shaped in this round device.

(26:32):
It's a circle that it takes upabout a third of the entire back
of the entire phone. And itcould take some pretty strong photos too.
They were very very proud of it. I tested it, I use videos
with it. I wouldn't be Ido not think it takes wonderful overglowing pictures

(26:55):
at night. The nice folks atone plus took us on a cruise around
the Statue of Liberty Liberty in theHudson River at night, and they just
give us the phones. And Igot to tell you I was taking pictures
with that in a few of thedifferent phones. The night sensor is not
the greatest. Other than that,it's a really really strong, nice video.
It's a nice smooth photo too.But it's the first thing that you

(27:18):
notice you do have to kind ofbe wary of when you're using it with
one hand, that your finger asyou're holding it's going to cover up it
kind of gently rest on that cameralens, which smudges it. So I've
used it to kind of I haveto start holding the phone down towards the
bottom, but they're very, veryleaning towards This is the camera that you
need to get. I have postedon my Instagram. If you go to

(27:38):
high tech textan across the whole boardbetween X and whatever, you're going to
see some recent photos and videos.I've taken that with it real quickly.
Let me get to the software. It is an Android experience, but they
have layered another operating system on topof Android. It's called oxygen Os.
It's oxygen Os thirteen point two,so it's built on top of Android thirteen

(28:02):
now one plus. They're saying thatthey have four years that's pretty strong of
major Android asos upgrades and five yearsof security updates. That is built in
doesn't cost you extra. I likethat a lot. The software is neat
because it's multitasking. It's multitasking. When you open the phone into a fablet,

(28:26):
you could hold it. It's likea little prayer book you hold with
two hands. It's nice and bright. You can open three up to three
different apps at the same time, and you can move them all over the
screen. So you want multitasking. This multitask like any other phone, better
than any other phone that I haveused yet, even from the Z's the
Z fold five. Is it worthit? I'm gonna wrap this thing up.

(28:48):
People are waiting, Michael. You'vetalked about this thing for two segments.
How much is it? Seventeen hundreddollars. That was the third audible
gasp that we did when we wentthrough the press listen. Foldable phones aren't
cheap because the Fold five from Samsungis eighteen hundred dollars. This is seventeen
hundred dollars. At the end ofthe day, what do you do?

(29:11):
Can you justify spending seventeen hundred dollarsfor the one plus open? However,
when you do some trade and offers, they're going to knock about two hundred
dollars off of it to make itabout fifteen hundred dollars. I don't know
why they didn't make it fifteen hundreddollars in the first place, but they
did. But if you're looking fora foldable this holiday season, and I've
never talked about one plus because thisis the first one Plus I've had.

(29:32):
I was pretty damn impressed. Ireplaced, obviously my Samsung. I've been
using it. I like the factthat it is thin. I have really
not come into any other issues. This is what I use for videos,
this is what I do to makemy Instagram little wheels and everything. Folks,
I know you really can't touch itsbest buy. I believe you can
go in and see some of thesethings. You can order it best by,

(29:52):
you can order Azam, Amazon, and you can go to OnePlus dot
com find the phone, find abroken phone. I think they said,
if it's broken, trade it in, send it back. You get two
hundred dollars off fifteen hundred dollars. There's my review one plus. If you
see me around, I got evincedtonight. But you have the Longhorn game
and the Cougar game. Did yousee me? Say Garth, let me
see your one plus open because I'mpretty freaking impressed. There you go,

(30:17):
two segments of talking about phones. What do we got next? Who knows?
This is why you tune into theshow. Michael Guirefeld, The High
Tech Texas, Who's Hungry People?Doesn't matter if you're listening Just before twelve
noon or are wonderful repeats on KPRCnine fifty am just before midnight. I

(30:41):
bet you're hungry if you're listening tothe repeat and it's just before midnight.
Johnny Tomaly's is not open right now. But if you're listening live and you're
wondering where to go watch the game, watch the Texas Longhorns and the University
of Houston Cougar's which will air righthere on our station here in about two
hours or so, why don't youover to Johnny Tomaly's. It is an
unbelievable texts mix Cantina. It's theone I'm talking about specifically, Missouri City.

(31:07):
It's actually a city in Texas,believe it's called Missouri City. It's
in Fort Benn County, southwest sideof Houston. It's a twenty seven to
twenty FM ten ninety two. I'vebeen yapping about it since it's been open,
probably since late February. I thinkI've been there. I probably go
in there once so every other week. Unbelievable. It's great family food too.
I mean, you want it's notjust let's just go some Minchelasa together.

(31:29):
No, No, it's everything interms of steak and they've got all
there. You gotta get their fish, the grilled shrimp that they wrap into
things, to free ice cream forthe kids. But the bar is awesome.
Yes, but I think that wasat least eight different TVs. So
you got the football game that'll beon. They got wonderful happy hours Monday
through Friday. And just because youare a loyal listener of mine, not

(31:52):
just today, any day you goin, you use my name when you
sit down and orders whatever you're gonnaorder. Say, I heard Michael Garfield
talking about this. I want myfree kso. You get a free kso
appetizer just by mentioning my name,Garfield, high Tech, dex k PERC
Radio. Unbelievable. I have myname has become a coupon? How cool

(32:15):
is that? Free kso at JohnnyTomali's the Missouri City location right there.
It's a Murphy Road not far fromHighway six, so it's very close to
sugar Land too. Go check itout. Uh, it's just it's it's
it's good food. Reggie O'Neil,the entire management team, they're they're they're
cool. I well, I'm goingto the game, so I'm not gonna

(32:35):
go watch it there, but maybetomorrow, maybe on Sunday at fl watchtop
Little Johnny Tomaly's or I'm getting huggy, so I need to keep on rolling
here. I go to restaurants alot. When was the last time you
guys have been to a movie?Callum? Do you physically go into movie
theaters now? Or do you allstream everything? Callum's my producer here,
he's talking to my Here are youa Taylor Swift fan? And you know

(32:58):
where I'm going with. I don'twant to talk about this, but I
think it's pretty funny you Taylor Swift? You know what I'm I don't have
any I mean, she's very talented. Yes I'm jealous. Point is Taylor
Swift. She's running out of entertainmentvenues to conquer her eras tour. I

(33:21):
guess made billions of dollars. She'staking a break and she's gonna start it
again. They filmed a movie ofher concerts. It's called the They just
released it, The Era's Tour. It's a concert film. You ever seen
a concert film? So it's nota movie per se with like a script,
but they're showing it on a bigwidescreen movie and she did a deal

(33:43):
I think with AMC theaters. Itopened to ninety five million dollars in its
opening weekend, already the highest grossingconcert film of all time, highest grossing
concert film all the time. Imean her, I think her father financed
it paid. He paid between tento twenty million dollars to produce the film.

(34:07):
He hired a famous director. Hpretty good investment. Pretty good investment
here. But there's I bring thisup because it's controversy because when you go
to a movie theater, there's etiquette. Right, You sit down, you
get your popcorn, you hold hands, you do whatever you want to do.
Maybe you sneak in a Coole Bruski, whatever you want. No,
No, Taylor Swift and AMC,they've been encouraging people to sing and dance

(34:31):
during the film, and we've seenvideos. People are now taking selfies that
you really, I mean, technically, you're not allowed to bring a camera
into a movie because you're gonna haveme the movie police are gonna no,
no, no where it's gonna endup online. No, they want you
to do that. And it didn'tstop people from going. I don't even
know how much it's gonna make thisweekend. So no, I'm not going

(34:53):
to see it. I finally sellBarbie. I don't even know what that
was the last time I went talkedinto a movie. There. I haven't
seen Oppenheimer. I have physically seen. How many times have I physically walked
into a movie? THEA this year? Under a? Certainly under five?
Maybe under three? Maybe? IsBarbie the only one I've seen? That's

(35:14):
pretty sad. It was a horriblemovie. Oh God, I hated Barbie.
Great mine best marketing of the year, not even a question best Marty.
I'm a marketing guy. I lovethe way that market. The Barbie
movie made a ton of money.Horrible movie, absolutely horrible money. Where
why am I going with this?People? This is I'm just talking pop
culture. I'll give up my numberhere at seven one three two one two

(35:36):
five nine five. Oh, ifyou want to yell at me, don't
tell it. I talked to Barbiewith movie. It's gonna win an Academy
award. Okay, okay, whateveryou think. So what else did I
want to cover here before we getto the top of the hour. The
phone number, I already gave youthe phone number. Yeah, did feel
free that you may be on holdfor a while, so uh he's open
that the Uh oh do I haveenough time to talk about this? Oh?

(36:00):
Shout out to you, and oursignal goes to College Station. I
believe what's up College Station? Youknow? I just love Collegeation? By
the way, Callum, should Ishould I start making Aggie jokes now?
Or am I going to lose listeners? Is it okay? If we actually
one of one of my best friendsis an Aggie. He's not even having

(36:22):
a good year. I guess what'sokayle callum? What's the best thing ever
to come out of College Station?Highway six? Ladies and gentlemen, please
tip your waitresses and do not changethis channel? All right? I am
jealous of College Station because at CollegeStation is actually good. It has there.
It's a test market for something Amazonis doing, and I'm pretty freaking

(36:44):
impressed. If you're if you're somewhereover College Station and you see a drone
flying around, good for you Amazon. We've heard, we've heard a lot
about what Amazon drone deliveries have beendoing, and we're they're going you know,
they have to pass FAA regulations. However, get this, Amazon has

(37:07):
been testing drone deliveries in College Stationsince December of last year, and they're
delivering Get this, they're delivering pharmaceuticals. Is that something you really want delivered
by a drone? Customers at CollegeStation. By the way, if you're
listening in College Station shot out Aggie's, you're eligible for aerial deliveries of over

(37:30):
five hundred medications for comic conditions likeflu and asthma, pneumonia. How about
that? Now, Texas for somereason has become a hotbed for drone delivery
trials service called Wing. It's fromAlphabet, which is Google. They've been
offering Dallas Fort Worth residents a partnershipwith Walmart. I'd like to do that.

(37:52):
I'll tell you what. We're gonnatake a break. We have one
more out. If anybody listening rightnow or knows somebody who's had a drone
delivery, if you're in college todayor my shows up, and if you're
listening on iHeart up in DFW,I want you to call me seven one
three two one two five nine fiveout. How did it work? Do
they tell you a drone is comingand you go catch it in the backyard?

(38:13):
And I know they're very smart. They at GPS, they know where
your backyard is. What if whatif a you drop it in the backyard
and your dog eats it, andthat's not good when your dog eats medication,
Or what if they accidentally drop itat your neighbor's house because you share
backyards and you start taking somebody else'sdrugs. I just there's just a lot

(38:34):
of loopholes over here that I'm justreally not too sure about talking to people.
Because we are going to take abreak. The name is Michael Garfield.
What a fun big hour coming up? Next hour, We're gonna well,
people want to hear my thoughts onthat phone one more time from one
plus, I will tell you abouta new SUV that I drove before anybody
else in the world did earlier thisweek when I was in Charleston, South

(38:54):
Carolina. By the way, I'mgonna give you my review of all the
food I ate Charleston, South Carolina. What is the deal with biscuits in
the South? Why are biscuits servedtwenty four freaking hours a day in South
Carolina? It'll be that we'll beback after this. I tex Is Michael

(39:22):
Garfier Michael Garfield, Michael Garfield's joiningUS and the high Tech Texan. Michael
Garfield is here with a high TechTexans items to make life easier, new
technology. So Michael Garfield has somethingyou might want. Texas. Michael Garfield

(39:43):
is your high tech Texan three decadeshelping you make magic with your gadgets.
I heard worldwide on the iHeartRadio Act. Now your high tech Texan, Michael
Garfield number two, straight up,well, all straight up, twelve noon.
If you're listening live on KPRC ninefifty am, or if you're listening

(40:06):
to the best of Repeat, it'sa few minutes after midnight on Sunday.
Michael is my name. It's calledthe High Tech Textans Show. I am
here to keep you awake should yoube driving past midnight. I am here
to entertain you, and I guessmaybe kill time before kickoff of the Cougars
long horned football game, which youwill hear right here on our station in

(40:28):
coverage starts at about two hours.Who you got, Callum? Who?
Who you got? Callum Reid?Thank you for punching buttons and answering phones.
You got the Cougars, and yougot long horns. Of course you
got long horns. And if yousay, don't say it, don't even
talk to my air course. Wewant the long Horns to win. Phone
number here seven one three two onetwo five nine five oh halfway to Happy
Hour. Halfway through the end ofthis show Last Hour we covered a lot

(40:52):
brand new phone that I've been veryquietly signed a non disclosure agreement that I've
been using it for well over threeweeks ago, the brand new one plus
open. It is the first foldablephone from a company called one Plus.
They have been around for many years. Chinese company. Pretty impressed. Foldables
are probably the way to go unlessyou're an iPhone user. Poor guys,

(41:13):
you don't have a foldable phone, but you do have a brand new USBC
charger. Welcome to the world, people. I have been playing with several
foldables over the year. Sam Sungvery graciously has let me play with their
flip phones, their fold phones, and now I am onto the one plus
phone and probably redo it. Imay actually even replay my full review.

(41:36):
I took two segments to talk abouta Last Hour because several people say,
what are your because it had Finallylast Thursday, a few days ago,
they lifted the embargo. They putit on sale, so probably the eighty
or so or ninety or so peoplethat were flown up to New York about
three weeks ago, and I hada press conference and meeting that we couldn't

(41:58):
talk about it, we couldn't showit. The reviews are coming out,
so they wanted my thoughts. Ifyou happen to see me at the football
game today, I'm in seeing somebig charity event tonight tomorrow, and who
knows, if you see me aroundsummer, I'll be carrying the one plus
phone and I will show you withthe unique camera, the Hasselblode big camera
on the backside. I do likeit covered a number of other things I

(42:22):
will talk about. I did anotherTriplet'll see if I can sneak that in
he real quick. Earlier this week, I went to Charleston, South Carolina.
Anybody, anybody Charleston, South Carolina. I have never been to any
of the Carolinas in my life, yes, at my old age to never
been. So I go to SouthCarolina because I wanted to South Carolina,
and again because I also cover theautomobile industry and I review cars and trucks

(42:45):
and SUVs all the time. Hyundaiflew many auto journalists out to Charleston,
South Carolina, and they let usdrive the brand new just release that'll be
on dealership lots later this month, the twenty twenty four Hyundai Kona Kona.
It is a small suv, veryimpressive. Starts twenty four thousand dollars,

(43:07):
goes up to thirty one or thousanddollars or so, so it's a relatively
decent price. Drives well. Ilove the technology inside with the infotainment screen.
I'll kind of detail that a littlebit more. I've never been to
South Carolina, and oh, weatherwas gorgeous. There's a lot of naval
action going on there. There's likemilitary helicopters. Boeing now I think they

(43:30):
moved there US headquarters from Seattle, massive Boeing plant right there at the Charleston
airport. It's an old boy,it's an old ass town, cobblestone streets.
It's like, you know, righton the water Atlantic Ocean. And

(43:51):
we got to drug I saw,we stayed downtown. People say it first
of all, tourism is big there. And I posted on my social media
and I put some pictures like heyCharleston, I mean in dozens, but
dozens you gotta eat here, andyou got to eat here. Check out
this restaurant. Ooh, they lovethem food. They love their food.

(44:14):
I'm not a grits person, butthey actually made grits that act were palatable
to me. The shrimp and gritswere out of this world. I don't
even know. Don't know. Don'tcall me and ask me if I ate
there. I just because I atea few restaurants. And then they had
some banquets and we had to eatwith the media. But anyway, it
was beautiful. I was able torun around downtime. You know, I'm
a runner. I try to reallykind of get the lay of the land

(44:36):
because I'll take a little map andI'll run around. I run around the
battery. It's called the battery likeNew York. You know the batteries down
south right on the water. Oh, the houses. I've been standing there
for what like three hundred years. They've withstood hurricanes. But everywhere you go,
man, I'm smelling biscuits. What'sup the sweet tea? I could
do two hours on did you knowwhat iced tea needs to be made of?

(44:59):
Two ice and tea? Keep yoursugar, But damn the biscuits.
Shrimp and gravy, good stuff.I wish the Charleston Convention, the Visits
Bureau, they probably should hire mebecause I do like to go back over
there, and it was it wasreally neat. But anyway, thanks to
the Hundai folks, and I'll seeif I can give you a little bit
more play by play. Checked outthe Hyundai Kona later this month. It's

(45:23):
an easy drive. It works wellon the highway. We got it,
did a little I'm not saying wedid a little off rods, but the
city streets, the cobblestones, itwas just really really smooth. And I
just love the warranty and the technologythat they put into the days and so
two thumbs up from me. Wecontinued the show. Good some emails over

(45:45):
here. You guys are really tryingto be very interactive, and so I
try to take care of you.Take care of me. I'll take care
of you. What else do youwant to know? Michael heard you last
hour talking about Netflix. Did youtalk about how they're raising prices? Is
it worth it? Because I knowyou covered that industry too. I did
forget it. That was a Jeanette. Thank you, Jeanette. I did

(46:07):
forget if you mentioned on that.I told you Netflix had their earnings information.
They gained nine million new subscribers intheir third quarter, and they made
what one point five or one pointsix billion dollars in profit in the third
quarter. Why because they cut downon password sharing. If for some reason,

(46:30):
your Netflix hasn't been working because you'vebeen bar aware somebody's password and ain't
working anymore. And if it ain'tgonna work, what are you gonna do?
You're gonna sign up for it.But you know what starting immediately,
guess what? They up the price? Yup, people, because nothing's going
down in price. Netflix has alreadyraised its price. They hiked the monthly

(46:52):
price. Here's the breakdown right now. Do you even know what you're paying
for your Netflix? They took thebasic plan from ten bucks now to twelve
dollars. They took the Premium planfrom twenty bucks now twenty three dollars per
month. But then you may havethe advertisers supported plan. Guess what they

(47:12):
didn't touch that. The advertised supportedplan is still going to cost seven bucks
a month. You like commercials, good, because you're about to hear one
in about a minute and a half. I'm fine with the commercials keeps things
gone, keeps radio free. Thankyou so much to Johnny Tomali's US coins
and jewelry, all my sponsors. You see how long did that take?
Five seconds? And now you gettwo hours of free content. This is

(47:34):
the first time Netflix has raised pricesin the United States in about a year,
almost two years. It was Januarytwenty twenty two. They said,
the growing economic pressures on the streamingindustry and the streaming providers raising prices and
cracking down a password sharing. Oh, by the way, Disney Plus,
Hulu, Peacock they also announced priceincreases in recent months too. Keep streaming

(48:00):
is coming to an end. It'scoming to an end. It's you know,
oh, I just need to internetaccess. You got three, four
or five different streaming services online,Netflix and Disney Plus and Hulu and whatever.
You're gonna be paying what you usedto be paying a cable. You
want free tip, you want somefree TV. There's still such a thing
called O TA over the air.If you're in Houston, there's probably sixty

(48:22):
plus free over the air channels.Yes, a lot of them are in
Spanish, but they are free.Nope, you're not gonna get ESPN,
but you're gonna get the channel withABC, CBS, NBC, Fox.
That's free too. There's your freetip of the day. We are gonna
take a break. People want tohear more about that one plus open foldable
phone. We're gonna get to thatwhen we come back, along with more

(48:42):
of your emails. Hi tech Textdot com. Mister Miguel Garfield is the
name. It's called the High TechTextan Show. Happy Saturday to you.
Hope you're listening live. You're listeninglive. There really still is AM radio,
which you will hear at about threehours right here the University of Houston

(49:04):
Cougars versus my University of Texas Longhornsright here on nine fifty. So thank
you for listening live. Should younot be listening live, you probably are
actually listening to it on podcast iHeartRadio. That's the way to listen to the
show and all our shows everywhere aroundthe country, if not the world,
at your convenience. Callum Reid, how are you my man? He's pushing

(49:24):
the buttons and entering phone calls. He will put this up on the podcast
right when we are finished, soyou can listen to your heart's content and
listen to some of my thoughts andreviews of products. Yes, and technology,
but pretty much I got cars.I'm on a rip. I just
got back from another trip earlier thisweek where I was reviewing a brand new
car, not under embargo. Notunder It was the Hyundai just came out

(49:45):
with a new small suv, theHyundai Kona. They upgraded it. I
was in Charleston, South Carolina, for that never have been to the state
of South Carolina until earlier this week. It's a lovely town. We'll get
into that in another segment, butright now I could finally talk about this
thing under embargo. Couldn't say aword for three or three and a half

(50:08):
four weeks. I have had abrand new phone from a company you may
not have heard of, but itis called one plusnep l us. You
can go to one Plus. Itis a Chinese company that manufactures phones,
and they've been around quite a whileand they've had a number of interesting phones.
I've never actually had one. I'veheard some good reviews, but flew

(50:30):
up to New York about three orfour weeks ago with some other ilk in
my industry. Technology writers and bloggersand people who cover the industry met with
the designers and the engineers, andthey gave us a brand new one plus
Open. It is one plus veryfirst foldable phone. And you know why

(50:51):
because most of every company is puttingout a foldable phone. Samsung has done
it for a while five years rightnow, that Samsung, As you know.
I was in South Korean July whenthey rolled out and introduced the Flip
five and the Fold five, verygood phones. I'm a Sanmsum fan.
Yes, really haven't played with anymore other manufacturers because the hell of Apple's

(51:13):
even gonna acknowledge me. I don'teven know what number of Apples on SCROWM.
I think Monorolla makes it a GooglePixel. Haven't played with the Google
Pixel. I think I've seen oneof those things. Heard they're nice.
They just came out with the foldglephone too. But I'm here to talk
about my thoughts about the brand newone plus Open. Where do I start?

(51:34):
Well, I'm going to compare itto the Samsung Fold five because that
is what I had been playing withbefore I had to send it back for
a few months. I like folds. I think they're neat. I think
the flip is cooler than the foldbecause it flips up it's a clamshell phone.
However, one of the reasons thatI was carrying around the fold five,

(51:57):
the larger one that opens up likea book, the full foldable phone,
it's because it's got a better cameraSamsung Flip five. I love the
form factor just I use the camerain the videos so much. Just doesn't
have near the quality of a largerphysical camera like the Samsung Flip five.
Let's now go over to talk aboutthe one plus open. It's thinner and

(52:20):
lighter than the Samsung fold phone. It is if you look at the screen
size. There's a front screen thatopens up. You open it up like
a book, and it becomes alarger phone. We call it a fablet,
combination between a phone and a tablet. The size on this the front

(52:42):
screen. I like it a lot. In fact, if I gave you
this phone, or if you seethe OnePlus open and you look at it
as it's folded up, if youwill, it's about the same size as
your typical phone yes, and iPhone, yes, any other non foldable phone.
So you can just sit there inuse it like a phone from the
front screen, do everything you need. You've got your icons, you could

(53:04):
talk on the phone PERFECTO love it. It's a bit wider than the Samsung
Fold, the Samsung Fold five. It's kind of got a relatively thin front
screen, and then you open itup and obviously it doubles in size.
So the the one plus open isis larger in the front and it looks

(53:27):
like a fune. The secret isthat at this point you open it up
and now you've get doubles its sizeand the screen quality is really really nice.
It is not it's a form ofO L ED and I talk about
OLED a lot, which is organiclight emitting DIO, which no one really
cares about. It's not O Ld ED. It's something called LTP of

(53:50):
which is kind of a form ofO LEAD, which is like a TV
screen has led. It's a formand you have to have a few different
things. But one Plus did areally job of making this work. It
is extremely bright. In fact, they say it's one of the brightest phones
out there in terms of the display. There's another term that I can confuse
you. It's called hurts h Zhurts. This thing can actually change the

(54:15):
hurts up to one hundred and twentyhurts, which is really the refresh rate
all the way down to one.And so in terms of the screen,
I really think they did a reallynice job when Plus died of getting the
colors right. It's very bright, the screen size, it all works well.
So in terms of the experience ofphysically holding it and carrying it around,

(54:36):
maybe you put it in your purse, ladies and dudes like me,
I don't. I put it tomy either my front right pocket, or
maybe I've been keeping this in oneof my back pockets. It's relatively thin,
thinner than that Samsung. So whenI'm sitting down and it can bend,
it's been through bendinfoldable test. Itactually does stand up. Matter of
fact, speaking of stand up,because it's a moving part and it folds

(54:59):
open and closed, there's obviously thingsthat could go wrong versus a non foldable
phone or a non flippable phone. One plus says they have tested the open
and fold over one million times, one million times, and that's compared to
Samsung's two hundred thousand times. Thatthey actually say one million times. This
is open and closed, and it'sall because of this interesting hinge. There

(55:21):
is a hinge, and they actuallytook a lot of parts out of these
hands, because the hinge is thesecret to actually making sure that it doesn't
break, doesn't get any dust, doesn't get any water. You know,
they've even put holes, little tinypin holes in this hinge just in case
there's a little moisture, little waterthat it could drain out. Instead of
having hundreds of parts of the hinge, they have I believe sixty nine exact

(55:44):
little parts to actually make this hingework. And it's nice because the phone
actually snaps close. As a matterof fact, I want to try to
do it right now for you.Listen closely. That's me closing it,
opening it, closing it again. It snapped, and unlike a few of
the other foldable phones in the market, this hinge can actually open up not

(56:06):
just to ninety degrees, but everythingfrom one hundred degrees one hundred and ten
hundred and twenty. It can actuallystop at different points versus some other folds
of the market. You can goto ninety degrees and then after that,
all of a sudden, book thespring pops open and it goes all the
way open to one hundred and eightdegrees of life flat, if you will.
So they really did a really nicedesign job on the outside. Uh,
the weight again is very good, the refresh rate, the screen.

(56:29):
I've been through some of this stuff. We're up against the breakover here.
So I'm gonna carry this into thenext segment, and I'm gonna talk about
things that I'm telling you, maybeone or two things that I really wish
one plus would have thought to putin here. Probably if they added these,
maybe they'll do it in version twoof the Open two. There's a
few things that are missing that you'regonna find a lot of other phones.

(56:49):
It's not the cheapest phone out there, but I'm gonna it's called it TASE.
When we come back on the otherside, I'm gonna tell you how
much it costs. You can getthese things now. You can get them
directly on the website, which isone plus. Just google it. I
believe you can get them a bestbot. You can even get a few
hundred dollars discount. If you tradein any phone, any phone whatsoever,
They're gonna give you a two hundreddollars discount. But it's the software,

(57:12):
it's multitasking. And again, ifI write a story, and I may
actually have to write a story aboutthis on my website, High Tech Texting
dot Com the lead, if notthe if not the headline or the title
of the story would be for ADHDfolks like myself who multitask the software in
the way they've designed it to optimizethat fold out screen is pretty darn amazing.

(57:38):
One, two, three different appscan be displayed on this thing in
different configures, so you can haveall these windows open. They really did
optimize that. They really did anice job with the software. I'll tell
you about that on the other side, as we continue the high Tech Text
show reviewing the new one plus openphone continuing, and we thank you for

(58:05):
continuing to listen to the High TechText and Show. I am Michael Hope
the Budy's having a good day.I'm going to continue. Very rarely do
I carry over a topic between segmentand segment, only in instances where I
really break down and review some productsthat I've been playing with for a while.
In this case, I want tocontinue the discussion that we're having with
a brand new cell phone that wasjust launching on sale two days ago.

(58:28):
However, thanks to the nice folksat one plus Onaplus that is the hardware
manufacturer. It's a Chinese based company, that makes cell phones. For the
past three maybe almost four weeks rightnow, I have secretly had this in
my possession and testing it. Icouldn't tell anybody in the world if you
saw me out in the while takingpictures with the weird looking kind of object.

(58:49):
And I haven't even described the camerapart of this thing. That's what
makes it stand out. That's whatI've been using. However, embargo has
lifted. It's on sale as ofOctober nineteenth. It is on sale directly
from one Plus. You can alsoget it, I believe it Best Buy
and Amazon, and by the way, they're all unlocked. You don't specifically
need to get a T mobile oran AT and T or something like that,

(59:10):
which is another nice plus also, but I gave you about a five
to six minute play by play ofthe hardware itself. I like the size
even without unfolding it. Again. This is one plus's very first foldable phone,
because foldable is allegedly are the wayto go. And I just got
an email during the break Garth, enjoying your breakdown because I've been hearing about

(59:31):
this new one plus really interesting onyour thoughts. But how does it fold?
Does the glass break in half andis there a crease that you can
see. It's a great question. This is from Brian. Brian's on the
north side of Houston. Whoever thoughtthat glass could be bendable? Well,
there's a lot of companies who makebendable glass right now, and this is
they have a special coding on mostall of them to make sure that if

(59:52):
it chatters or something is not goingto crack. OnePlus does that too.
I've been using the Samsung Flip fiveand the fold five for several months.
I got it. I was ableto go to South Korea. Very nice
of them to fly some journalists outthere. The big launch saw the Samsung
plant respectable company. I've been along Samsung fan. Not paid. I

(01:00:13):
wish they did pay me. NothingI do is pay. One Plus didn't
tip pay me to talk about this. None of these companies do. I
am your guy who's gonna give youthe good, the bad, and the
ugly and the nasty. But theSamsung, if you open it for years,
this they're on the It took Ittook Samsung about five years the fifth
version to make a foldable phone thatwas absolutely flat when closed. Before this

(01:00:35):
version for Samsung, there was alittle tiny wedge near the hinge. Just
it just wasn't one hundred percent flat. Samsung got it five tries later.
One plus they did it on theirfirst try. This is a very thin,
very light, very flat foam whenyou open it up, and just
like the Samsung too, I openedmy Samsung Fold five up. I can
see in the middle a little tinycrease of that screen. Because it's it's

(01:01:00):
foldable, you'll hold it up incertain lights. Maybe there's a reflection.
One plus, I gotta tell youwhat, it's even more subtle. You
look at this thing and at somepoint after the first hour or two like
that, you don't even know whatcrease it's gone. Maybe if you again
hold it to a certain light orsomething comes on the screen where the screen
is too bright, Yeah, maybeyou can see it crease. Very very

(01:01:22):
nice job. So anyway, theanswer to that, and Brian, thank
you very much for that email. No, there's not a big issue whatsoever,
and it's only going to get better. This one did get better because
this is thinner and lighter, andI went over some of the hardware parts
too. It's a very impressive topto bottom phone. And I will tell
you give you some more things. The battery. It's a and again I'm

(01:01:46):
gonna throw out some terms if you'renot regularly listening. I try to keep
things on the reel side, becausethat's what I do here on the High
Tech text and show. I keepit reels. It's a forty eight hundred
milliamp battery and pretty impressive battery life. I had no problem getting through an
entire day watching some videos, takingphotos, and doing my texting and whatever

(01:02:08):
generally we do every day. Iwant to talk about the battery. Those
are There's one or two things thatprobably I would change and maybe one Plus
has it up trick up their sleeve, not to put everything on their very
first version. This does not havewireless charging. And when they mentioned that
in the press conference a few weeksago in New York, and all of

(01:02:29):
our little technology little bloggers and journaliststogether, we kind of I heard a
little gasp in the room. Howcould you release a phone that doesn't have
a wireless charger right now? Listen. I the PR folks kind of got
around it. But what they didis instead of making a wireless one Plus
is really big into fast fast charging, So in the box they include a

(01:02:53):
fast charger. I'm gonna give youa number. It's gonna blow your mind
because you don't know what I'm talkingabout. But's a six fifty seven watt
charger. Generally you're gonna charge yourphone at twenty watts or so. This
is a sixty seven watt charger thatcomes in the box and it comes with
a with a us USBA to USBCcord. It's included in the box and

(01:03:14):
then you yes, you're gonna haveto plug it into charges thing, but
you can go from zero to maybetwenty five percent charge probably in seven to
eight minutes. Fifteen minutes later you'remaybe up to fifty percent or so like
that. You could you could youcould charge the whole thing in under forty
five minutes. So it's a fastcharger and that's something that one plus kind
of lauded to me. It's onething they have missing. Maybe they're gonna

(01:03:37):
wait to next year, who knows, because by my bed at night,
I have a wireless charger and mostall phones right now, yes, your
iPhones and some of the sam youknow, the recent Samsung phones and the
Google pickles of phones. You couldjust place it down on your charger and
he wirelessly charges all the new carsthat are reviewed pretty much, you know,

(01:03:58):
and if they're relatively you know, kind of mid level and certainly higher
that they have a wireless charger somewherein that car. Not gonna be able
to do that with the one Player. You're gonna need to bring that USBC
or USB to plug it in.So there you go. That's one issue
I had with that, but Iwill tell you when it's certainly when you
plug it in and fires up fast. Waterproofing. This has an ip X

(01:04:24):
four Again, that was another kindof gasp in the room. IPX four
means it will handle water, splashes, splashes. You look at other phones
in the market, and I'm gonnago back because I am very familiar with
the Samsung. They're foldable. It'sipx eight. That means it can handle
a drop into water. Don't keepit in that long, but you could

(01:04:45):
drop Samsung. The point is,don't get the one plus open wet and
if you do, dry it offas soon as possible. A bit surprising
too. So what else you wantto talk about? The camera? This
is where it changes. The oneplus Open has five cameras, including a

(01:05:09):
thirty two megapixel fixed focus main cameraon that front screen and a twenty megapixel
fixed focus camera on the inside screen. But here comes the crazy stuff.
This is where you notice it onthe back. They got together with Hasselblood
anyone Hasselblode tough to get a bettername in the world of cameras for generations

(01:05:30):
than Hasslelive. There's a main rearcamera system and it's got the Hasselblode name
right there. It's got one, two, three, three lenses out there.
One is a sixty four megapixel telephoto, a forty eight megapixel ultra wide
camera, and a forty eight megapixelmain sensor. And it's shaped in this
round device. It's a circle thatit takes up about a third of the

(01:05:55):
entire back of the entire phone. And it could take some pretty strong photos
too. They were very very proudof it. I tested it. I
use videos with it. I wouldn't. I do not think it takes wonderful
overglowing pictures at night. The nicefolks at one plus took us on a

(01:06:16):
cruise around the Statue of Liberty Libertyin the Hudson River at night, and
they just give us the phones. And I got to tell you, I
was taking pictures with that in afew of the different phones. The night
sensor is not the greatest. Otherthan that, it's a really really strong,
nice video. It's a nice smoothphoto too, But it's the first
thing that you notice. You dohave to kind of be wary of when

(01:06:39):
you're using it with one hand thatyour finger as you're holding it's going to
cover up it kind of gently reston that camera lens, which smudges it.
So I've used it to kind ofI have to start holding the phone
down towards the bottom, but they'revery, very leaning towards This is the
camera that you need to get.I have posted on my Instagram. If
you go to high tech textan acrossthe whole board between X and whatever,

(01:07:01):
you're going to see some recent photosand videos. I've taken that with it
real quickly. Let me get tothe software. It is an Android experience,
but they have layered another operating systemon top of Android. It's called
oxygen Os. It's oxygen Os thirteenpoint two, so it's built on top
of Android thirteen now one. Plusthey're saying that they have four years that's

(01:07:25):
pretty strong of major Android ASOS upgradesand five years of security updates that is
built in doesn't cost you extra.I like that a lot. The software
is neat because it's multitasking. It'smultitasking. When you open the phone into
a fablet, you could hold it. It's like a little prayer book you

(01:07:46):
hold with two hands. It's niceand bright. You can open three up
to three different apps at the sametime, and you can move them all
over the screen. So you wantmultitasking. This multitask like any other phone,
better than any other phone that Ihave used yet, even from the
Z's the Z fold five. Isit worth it? I'm gonna wrap this

(01:08:08):
thing up. People are waiting,Michael. You've talked about this thing for
two segments. How much is it? Seventeen hundred dollars. That was the
third audible gas that we did whenwe went through the press listen. Foldable
phones aren't cheap because the Fold fivefrom Samsung is eighteen hundred dollars. This
is seventeen hundred dollars. At theend of the day, what do you

(01:08:30):
do? Can you justify spending seventeenhundred dollars for the one plus open?
However, when you do some tradeand offers, they're going to knock about
two hundred dollars off of it tomake it about fifteen hundred dollars. I
don't know why they didn't make itfifteen hundred dollars in the first place,
but they did. But if you'relooking for a foldable this holiday season,
and I've never talked about one plus, because it is the first one plus
I've had, I was pretty damnimpressed. I replaced, obviously my Samsung.

(01:08:57):
I've been using it. I likethe fact that it is thin.
I have really not come into anyother issues. This is what I use
for videos, this is what Ido to make my Instagram little wheels and
everything. Folks, I know youreally can't touch its best buy. I
believe you can go in and seesome of these things. You can order
it best Buy, you can orderAmazon, and you can go to OnePlus
dot com find the phone, finda broken phone. I think they said,

(01:09:18):
even if it's broken, trade itin, send it back. You
get two hundred dollars off fifteen hundreddollars. There's my review one Plus.
If you see me around, Igot evinced tonight. You hit the Longhorn
game and the Cougar game. Didyou see me, say, Garth,
let me see your one plus open, because I'm pretty freaking impressed. There
you go, two segments of talkingabout phones. What do we got next?

(01:09:39):
Who knows? This is why youtune into this show. Michael Guarfeld
the High Tech Texas, thank youfor indulging us for talking once more about
the pretty big, pretty big dealthis new phone. And I kind of

(01:10:02):
did a little repeat from that firsthour with my review the one plus open.
It sounds like a golf thirdlem,it doesn't it. It is the
first foldable phone, the first foldopen book. Because most every company other
than that Apple Company has a foldablephone. Not the cheapest thing in the
world. At seventeen hundred dollars,it is thinner than some of the other

(01:10:23):
foldables out there, and I thinkit's pretty cool. You just needed to
understand if you need to realize isthis what you want to spend your money
on? And do you multitask? It is great for multitasking. And if
you're ADHD and you need three thingsgoing on, you want to watch some
stream or a live TV feed andone segment of the open foldable phone do

(01:10:44):
you want your email open? Andthen you want a third appy. It
does it all, so it waspretty impressive with that. Feel free to
go back and listen again. Ifyou just tuned in to the podcast that
my man Callum, thank you verymuch, and about what ten minutes for
Calum ten fifteen minutes, you'll putthat up. It'll be on iHeartRadio.
You just look for Michael Garfield orhigh Tech Texan and then at that point
you'll be set to go and listento the show over and over again.

(01:11:09):
I have been on five trips infour weeks. This is kind of like
the old GARF. I mean,you couldn't. I was on a plane
all the time. I'm talking.I'm Southwest, a list companion passed without
a companion by the way I'm andthen I don't travel for anywhere for a
while, but I've been living onplanes and lifeline. I think it's need

(01:11:30):
to seeing different parts of the country. I've been to New York twice already
in two weeks. Just got backfrom Charleston, South Carolina. I did
the Dallas out of Austin here andthere. But anyway, on planes,
I saw something was interesting. Gettingon and off a plane is it's such
a pain and it takes so damnlong. It's something that that airlines continue

(01:11:56):
to try to fix. And Isaw something the other day that United.
I don't fly United a lot.I did fly United once on one of
my five trips. They are they'retrying to speed up the boarding process and
they're gonna do the it's this whendoes this star It starts this coming week.
They are going to board economy classwindows seaters before the middle and aisle

(01:12:24):
seat travelers. They think this canspeed up the boarding process windows. If
you I don't sit in the windows, I don't I like the aisle.
That's just me. So windows seatpassengers, you're gonna get to board first.
Now not first, I mean ifyou're active duty military and people with

(01:12:44):
disabilities and you're gonna board the planefirst, then you're gonna go first class
in business class, which if you'reI'm not, but I will start flying
United. Should they bump me upto one day whatever it's called it,
then it's then it's time for thehoy puloid to get on the plane.
They think by filling the window seatsfirst, the total boarding time per flight

(01:13:08):
could be cut by up to twowhole minutes. We can laugh in the
two minutes, but I guess everysecond counts. There's actually such a thing
as plane boarding experts. They saythat windows seats first. It could be

(01:13:29):
a step in the right direction forboarding faster. It's not the most efficient
way to fill a plane. I'mmore worried about getting off the damn plane.
I rolled up into Hobby when Icame back on Thursday from Charleston.
Pretty much on time. South Postis on time. The the what is
it? The the the bridge, you know, the thing that they pull

(01:13:50):
up to the plane. The firsttimes happened to me. You know generally,
man, you you parked that plane. Here's the jet bridge. You're
si at jet bridge. There wasnobody working of the jet bridge. Kind
of had to sit there for likefive minutes, and people are standing at
and we're clearly looking out the leftside of the plane at the Jeff Bridge.
It ain't moving, and so whyare people standing up? Sit your

(01:14:11):
butts back down, people, It'sexactly what I did. Anyway, that's
my airline flight. By the way, I'm a big Southwest fan. I
like Texas based everything, especially Texasbased airlines that serves some Wow Turkey thanks
to our man or herb. I'mnot gonna give out the phone number because
we're almost out of time. Justkind of wrapping up some of the things
that we covered today. Should youwant to do the test drive, and

(01:14:34):
I'm gonna put some gonna I tooksome video, which, by the way,
I took video. This is howI could buy my life. I
took video with the new one plusopen foldable phone and we'll edit it on
that phone until maybe a five orsix minute video review of the new twenty

(01:14:57):
four Hyundai Kona SUV that I gotto test drive this week. Pretty cool,
right, See this is I'm justwrap it in there so that works,
so you'll get my thoughts if you'relooking for a vehicle that is you
know, I'm big into cost savingyou money people. I really am.
Four different levels of the Hyundai Kona, the SE, the SEL, then

(01:15:19):
you've got the end the letter Nthe end line with the turbo one point
six ter turbo. It starts abouttwenty four thousand dollars. Not bad knowing.
Remember, if you're a long timeMichael Garfield and High Tech text and
listener, there is only one onecar brand new on the US market that
is under twenty six under twenty thousanddollars. Only one it's Mitsubishi. That's

(01:15:44):
right, one Mitsubies that's under twentythousand doucks. So twenty four thousand dollars
start not bad. Thirty one thousanddollars for an suv actually works well.
I was impressed with it too.I love the electronics, the touchscreen,
twelve point three inch infotame screening, the sound system, the Bow sound system,
very nice. Ease in the backseatwhen you see the video that I

(01:16:05):
took, well, be sitting inI'm six foot tall and I'm sitting in
the back seat. I had alot of headroom, including my two inches
of extra hair that's on top ofmy head too. It was it was
beautiful. It's really really nice.So I think to a Hyundai for getting
me out to South Carolina and addingabout probably three to four pounds on me
with all them damn biscuits, whichwere pretty good. We'll talk more tourism

(01:16:27):
and travel next week because that's someof the things that I do. I
do want to also thank the nicefolks at Johnny Tomaly's. The show ends
if you do want to go watchthe University of Texas and the University of
Houston Cougar football game. You canlisten to it right here on our station
because we are going to carry itstarting in about an hour on nine to
fifty AM. And also our sisterstation seven ninety Sports that's going to carry

(01:16:48):
the Longhorns feed. You also cango to Johnny Tomalley's twenty seven t FM
ten ninety two. It's in MissouriCity, right near Missouri City Sugar Lamb
Border. Go over there and Iam going to take care of your caso
appetizer. You mentioned my name toany of the waiters or waitresses, they
will love you. Sit there andorder whatever you want, but I will

(01:17:09):
buy the appetizer just mentioned. MichaelCarfield, High Tech Texan kp ORC and
then you two can gain weight likeI did this past week. Also thanks
to US Coins and Jewelry, Ididn't get to talk enough. But one
of the reasons I was in NewYork this past trip, I was with
Kenny and Matt Duncan, Ryan andthe folks. US Coins and Jewelry launched
a brand new company within it iscalled Celebrity Mint. And if you saw

(01:17:33):
me with pictures and movies of thegreat world famous seriously, Rick Flair of
wrestling fame, they have minted anactual coin. Looks like a car,
but we can't call it a car. But is it's legal tender? He
was up there at Comic Con.I was on eBay Live with Rick Flair

(01:17:55):
with Kenny Duncan from US Coins andJewelry and Celebrity meant that was a blast.
But if you're looking for gold orsilver, you want to buy it,
you want to sell it, goUS Coins and Jewelry. It is
on Katie Freeway right at Vas.They're open every day except Sunday. Chick
fil A stole their idea. Theywill take care of you. Thanks to
them as a partnership too. Calumdo we cover everything? Okay, thank

(01:18:17):
you folks. Listen. If yousee me around, come say hey Garth.
Let me see your phone. Ifyou want to want some caso,
go to Johnny Tom Eyes and sayhey, Michael Garfield told me you're buying
the caso. We're set to go. Other than that, I am spent.
Gotta save my voice for my TexasLonghorns and the Houston Cougars coming up
here. Listen on behalf of everybodywho has been a part of this show,
Calum read. Thank you so much, Eddie Martini. I heart media

(01:18:41):
here in Houston, along with MarkSherman, Brian Erickson, and everybody else
who I can think of who sitin the really rich Carpenter offices down the
studio. Thank you for keeping meon here betweenty two plus years. My
name is Garf. See you nextweek. Hi Tech Texting dot com And
