To me, a craft brewer is much more of a mindset.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
We just opened two camps spread the gospel of good
beer beer. Tons and tons of stuff going on in
the beer world. I love craft beer. I love different
people's beers. It's the first favorite.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Cheers too old us beer geeks and those new to
the craft.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
What's on Tap? High five?

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Who?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
This is What's on Tap Radio Beer and the culture
that flows with it. Pears Beer Guru James Simpson and
Beer Logics Chadpilbe.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Hello, you just stands with the phone.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
You really did?

Speaker 2 (01:16):
You were like hello, Like I don't know who this is?
Before we had caller ID Hello James Simpson.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Well I know exactly who we are. That's manners he
was raised right, I was eleven years have given you
somebody to have a beer with. So what's on Tap radio?
I am James, we have Chad, we have Bill actually
back radio show on Tap this week. I was just, uh,

(01:42):
I'm trying to decide what glass where I'm gonna drink
my brought to the table beer in I don't I
guess I want to go with this one. Okay, this
is nuts.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
We never talk about what beers we bring to the table,
and no joke. I have brought two glasses that I've
never used to bring beer to the table before. And
I'm sitting there. I was like, I'm gonna use these
glasses and James I did not talk about this and
he says, I'm not sure what glass. I'm like, how
did we It's like, you know, I've heard of this before.

(02:14):
I think James and I have worked together so long
and we're so close, We're on the same cycle. That's
what it is.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
We just they say that happens, you know, they say
that happens. But I think I'm gonna go with this one.
All right, let's uh, let's get underway. I'm gonna crack
a beer hang on, so battling some allergies, so you
just bear with you. I'm a lot better than I
was last week. But let's get things started with partners.
C oh I got my cough buttons. I wore the

(02:41):
cough label off the button. I use it so much.
But our sponsors at Tantric Brewing, Spirit Pest Control, Beer
Logic Conference and Events Renal take an insurance group the
backyard Grill keeping the lights nice and bright thanks to
our friends over at Harbor Light Brewing and of course
sponsoring our podcast which is available everywhere and I mean everywhere,
thanks to our friends over at CASK. Welcome to the show.

(03:02):
First segment it's being a sponsors thanks to our friends
over at the backyard Grill. I had a friend the
other day asking me looking for a recommendation on a
place to go. They're, you know, trying to mix things
up a little bit. They always gotta go to the
same place as I was like, dude, why don't you
go out to the backyard grills? Like do genius idea?
So hopefully they made their way out there because a
lot of october Fest beer is flowing all the taps

(03:24):
over there. At the backyard grill and this has brought
the table. Who's kicking things off this week? Chat? Is
it gonna be me?

Speaker 2 (03:29):
You?

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Who's doing a thing?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
You know?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
With it being october Fest in the you know that
we've had and you're going to be opening up Octoberfest
all the way to Christmas now because you know that's
your rule, you know you wait until Labor Days. Well
you just drink october Fest.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Half, right. I usually I usually stop drinking the Octoberfest
when I run out of them, because, believe it or not,
those Christmas beer is going to be making their way
through the shelves pretty soon. But yeah, who's going first? Chad?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Oh? I saw it was advertised on a social media
site for I think it was Bell's Brewery, and I
saw it and I was like, you've got to be
kidding me, no way, But well, you know what I figure, James.
The weather's been beautiful and you know those hot days.
And I had a recent visit to the Lone Star State,

(04:18):
which we may get the chance to talk about, but
when I was there, it was a business seven degrees.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's that's all here in the South.
That's fall nine.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
You know, you know, you know what you like to drink,
you know, in those hot summer days. So I figure
we'll go first and reminisce and when I was there,
because it's like forty here now, and you know, something ridiculous.
There's a frost warning. But go ahead, Bill harbor light
Bill on third, mic Uh. He brought this into the studio.
So what do you want on those hot summer days

(04:50):
in Texas? Well, none other than good old fashioned barley wine.
So that's what we have kicked things off with. Bill,
Tell everybody what we are drinking. We're drinking seventeen. It's
a strong ale aged in bitter orange liqueur barrels, interesting
and bourbon barrels. And what brewery? Oh man, we're surely there.

(05:14):
It is a Surly Brewing company. Seventeen. Yes, this is
a sixteen ounce can and the ABV on this is
all right? So he did his homework, folks, and he
was able to read the label this time. Yeah, so yeah,
and he managed to get hey, he even got some
of it in the glass. All right, that's good. Okay,
don't tell the engineers we spilled in the studio. But

(05:35):
all right, well, I'm this is an expensive can of
beer by the way, and I'm gonna I'm gonna tell
you what I pick up on the nose right away.
I almost get a very very tart, acidic, almost like apple.
And then I'm gonna take a sip here. Oh did
you say that was a Did you say it was
a brandy wine barrel or something or brandy barrel? No,

(05:56):
this was reached in. Uh it's a we heavy a
blend of a red strong ale and uh we heavy
agent tattersaal bitter orange liqueur barrels. There it is. It's
the orange liqueur. That's where it's coming from. I'm like,
I thought it was apple. Nope, it's orange liqueur. All right. Well,
that's what we brought to the table here, the seventeen

(06:17):
Surly barley Wine, Imperial Red Ale aged and orange liqueur barrels.
We'll talk more about that once it opens up. I'm
gonna tell you big beer, but it needs to open up.
So James, go ahead, tell us what you brought to
the table.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Chatt and Bill kicking some beers off. That put some
hair on your chest, all right, So this is what
I was debating. Hang on, cough button coming in and
coming in the pinch.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I mean, I know we're struggling here on this. I
mean it's like trying to figure out what's going on
with the cough button. Oh my gosh, let's James just
open the beer.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
Go go Okay, So I'm gonna go with the What's
on Tap radio cast braining glass also known as the
water glass WoT R and Uh, I'm glad to bring
this for the October Fests season. The original october Fest beer,
the pull honor going with the original right here, Brood
originally in sixteen thirty four.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
And you even said the name correct, You got it?

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah, pol on this for a little bit, Lana.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
It's not Paul for golden.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
It's not nice head retention on their nice golden color.
The original from Munich October Fest. At six percent. This
is a poll onner October Fests beer. And like Chad
and Bill, I'm gonna let my beer breathe and I'm
gonna come back from break and uh break down the notes.

(07:38):
But this has been brought to the table thanks to
our friends over at the backyard Grill where Chad and
Bill kicked things off because it's forty degrees in their
neck of the woods. With the good old fashion.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Honestly, actually, old fashion is probably right because with the
orange it does taste like an old fashion. Oh yeah,
it does, absolutely right.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
And then I went with the original from october Fest,
the pollanner October Fests beer at six percent alcohol by volume.
And that, my friends, is brought to the table little
teaser of what we have on tap this week. We
are gonna talk october Fest. The reviews are in. How
do October Fests do? And Chad and I have got
unofficial rules of it's duing October Fests. All this so
much more. Hang with us, coming right up the official

(08:16):
What's on Tap Real Fun Factor week. We'll be right back.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
After reading about the evils of drinking, we made up
our mind. We're gonna stop reading. What's on Tap Radio
continues with James Simpson and Chad Pilbeam.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
All right, everybody's got a beer.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
You got a.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Beer, I got a beer. We got a beer. You
know who else has beer? The Backyard Grill on the
northwest side of Houston. But when you're drinking, you want
to have something to eat too, So go get yourself
some grub at the buyg The menu is amazing. They've
got all your Texas favorites like steaks, pahitas, chops, and
it's all grilled on a wood fired grill. Got burgers,

(08:59):
you got wraps. Hey, if you're vegetarian, they got salads,
they got soups, homemade dishes, and specialties like smoky the
beer chicken. Oh yeah, smoked chicken injected with local beer.
Sounds delicious, right yeah, And don't forget the green beans.
I know you're thinking, wait a minute, is this guy
just talking about all the grilled stuff and you're gonna
tell me to eat your veggies. Hey, mom said eat

(09:20):
your veggies. Over one hundred different menu items, get the
green beans. Trust me, you won't regret it, and over
one hundred different beers. Head out to the backyard Grill
in the corner of Weston Jones Road on the northwest
side of Houston.

Speaker 1 (09:32):
Cheers all right now that chat and I are settling in.

(09:52):
First segment was a little rough, that happens, but we're
settling in. Got a great show on tap this week
talking to October fan. The Google reviews are in. How
did October Fest go this year? Also, what do we
got on tap? We're gonna talk about Merle Haggard. We're
gonna talk about brer Yeah, Merle Haggard. Merle Haggard. Yeah.

(10:13):
In the news, Uh, some beer sales approve this.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Time we mentioned Merle Haggard on the show.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
We're talking about Merle Haggard this week. No, I don't.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
I'm just wondering if you remember last time we mentioned him.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
I don't, And on the top of my head, no,
but you got a good story on the news.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
So this is exclusive exclusive.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
There we go. But in eleven years of the show
I've been on the air, I'm sure we've mentioned Merle
Haggard a few times. But also on tap this week,
we're gonna talk about beer sales were approved for a
certain football stadium. We'll discuss who and uh yeah, brewer's
helping breweries and a man he's going out on TikTok
saying he's discovered the cheapest beer in the world. We'll
tell you where. That is. All on tap this week.

(10:55):
But I do want to go back to the beers
that we brought the table, thanks to our friends over
at the back, our grilled Chad and Bill getting into
the the beers that making nice and warm and cozy
because it's the temperas are starting to cool down a
little bits. It went from one hundred and five to
ninety five. Here we're on broadcasting, so it's falls here.
And of course where chat's broadcasting up on the east coast.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Ish Ish east coast. What do you, dude, Ish learn
a map or so you're more globe Oh my god,
you're more.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
East than we are. Anyways, northern part of the country.
It's a little cooler than it is here.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yeah, we got frost freeze advisories and stuff, and you're
and you're putting sunscreen on and tank tops. I mean,
because I was just there. I was hanging out in Texas.
I was down there, came down for a wedding and
uh want to want to thank our wonderful friends, the
Brennickx who had a beautiful ceremony, and uh yes there

(11:53):
was beer all be it. It was cors light in Michaelobaltra,
but it will still be and so there was that's right.
They had offered beer. So that was good. So it
wasn't a dry wedding. We could go ahead and celebrate
in style. And then I also went to the Texas
A and M football game against Missouri and it was

(12:14):
ninety seven degrees. Yeah, ninety seven degrees. Not only did
they grill some tiger, but we got cooked in the stands.
It was hot. Yeah, but managed to make a stop
at a local brewery, and I'll tell you which one
later on. But I do want to reflect on the

(12:34):
beers that we're drinking.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Yes, so James, you you you were with the You're
over there hanging out with your polan or my plan
or so this is what I was talking about in
the first segment. I didn't know what glass to bring,
and do I bring on MOSC grougan or do I
bring the what's on tap radio water glass? But I
went with a water glass because I didn't want to
drink out of all, how many ounces is as it's

(12:59):
a thirty two ounces, it's a later thirty three it's
thirty three point five I think, or thirty three.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
I think that's like that.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Two beers, two beers and a quarter of a beer
or something like that.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah, well it's a little over.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
To the head retention and on it. Yeah, So anyways,
I went, I went with a safe bet with what's
on tap radio glass. But let me go ahead and
give you a rundown on it. What we got here,
perfect balance of light, taste of hops, strong note of malt,
always goes down well, only brood for october Fest. That's

(13:35):
where it belongs, with all the fun of the fair,
like a ferris wheel and roasted almonds. And this is
that six percent alcohol by volume, originally brood in eighteen
eighteen bottom for a minute, october Fest beer, celebrating my
favorite time of year in october Fest season. Like I said,
it's it's over, well, the festival Munich's over at least,

(13:57):
and coming up late in the show.

Speaker 5 (13:59):
We got the reviews, you go, reviews are in, So yeah,
I wonder how that goes over in the Simpson household.
It's like, this is our favorite time of year and
gen's like our anniversary, not your kid's birthday.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Like, no, no Octoberfest season, sorry, honey.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Yeah, my family does not care whether about october Fest whatsoever.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
But yeah, but you do do, all right, So yeah,
that's what you have. We've got an eleven percent surly
brewing company out of Minnesota, and this particular beer is
a blend of a barley wine Old Ale. It's really well,
I think it's Old Ale Imperial red. What's on the
label there, Yeah, kind of a blend of red ale

(14:42):
and a wee heavy actually we have so Scotch ale. Yeah,
and then aged in bitter order of core barrels and
ten year old Henry McKenna bourbon barrels. All right, So
basically it tastes like I think, it tastes like a
spicy old fashion. It does kind of taste like an
old fashions very good. Yeah, I got it. Yeah, I
mean the orange really brings out that old fashioned and

(15:04):
the booze notes. But all right, so that's what we're drinking,
and it's warmed up. I'm a fan. We're gonna sip
on this for a while. Speaking of sipping on things,
how about some food or and some beer for your brain?
Now the official What's on Tap Radio fun fact of
the Week, brought to you by Who's ever checked clear?

Speaker 1 (15:21):
This week? All right, Professor Pilbeam, take it away, all right?

Speaker 2 (15:26):
So, have you ever lost something like a big game
or blue blew a trivia question and realize you're like, ah, dang,
it could have won. I you know, you you're you
gambled on something and you lost, and you're like, oh,
I'm so close.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
So close second yourself only if I would have done.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
This, yep, yep, And you're sitting there and you just
you had that opportunity, and you decide, you know, afterward,
you realize the big moment law you know, slipped away,
you missed your chance, and so naturally you may think,
I need a beer, And so you go and get
yourself a beer, and you sit down and you crack

(16:12):
open the beer, and the beer tastes great, but you're
still dwelling on that loss. You've gotta you gotta really
really dig into the beer. You gotta lean into it
in order to forget your loss, if you know what
I mean, Yeah, yeah, there you go, Bill, that's the look.
I mean. This is a this is a radio show
people can't see. But basically, if you get hammered and

(16:33):
you decide to go all in, let's go, let's beer
after beer after beer, let's go, let's go. What I'm
talking about is if you start pounding those beers to
the point where you start forgetting about your loss and
you don't have to worry about it anymore, then you
start to feel better, But then you gotta deal with
the hangover. So I'm gonna take you back to the

(16:56):
late eighteen hundreds with mister Samuel Bolton Junior. Do you
remember him? You No, Bill's like no, no, James is
shaking his head. No, you don't remember Samuel Bolton Junior. Well,
he's from Troy, New York. He was a businessman, he
was a brewer, he was a politician, and he was
a philanthropist. And being a businessman, he chose to invest

(17:21):
in the stock market. Wise man. Yeah, but you know
in the stock market you can take a bad beat. Yes, well,
the very first stock market crash of the New York
Stock Exchange occurred in May of nineteen oh one. I
want to take a guest who was on the receiving
end of that bad beat. I'll give you a hint.
His name was Samuel Bolton Junior, and he was a businessman, brewer, politician,

(17:44):
and philanthropist. And what did he do. He decided to
join others on shorting the Northern Pacific Railroad stock. And
if you're not familiar with what shorting of stock is,
it's whenever you bet that the stock is going to
go down, so you buy today, I bet that the
stock is going to go down. And if you do that,

(18:08):
if you do and the stock goes down, you win,
but if it goes up, you lose. Well, that stock
in one day went from one hundred and seventy dollars
to one thousand dollars. Bad bet, and his stock was shorted.
So what did he do? He needed to have a beer,

(18:31):
a lot of beer. He's a brewer.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
Samuel Bolton Jr. Went opened up a vat of boiling
beer and dove in and committed suicide. Your official What's
on Temp Radio fun fact of the week is that
while beer may help you feel a little bit better
about those bad beats and financial losses, Samuel Bolton Junior,
who had access to an unlimited supply of beer and

(18:54):
apparently not an unlimited supply of cash, suffered through the
first crash of the New York's stock Exchange in May
of nineteen oh one when he shorted the Northern Pacific
Railroad stock and when it crashed, he lost his fortune
and dove into a boiling that of beer. And that
is your official What's on Tap Radio fun fact of

(19:14):
the week. I know what you're thinking right now. James
is just shaking his head and he's got his yep.
He's got the cough button going because he can't believe
that's the fun fact. All Right, when we come back,
we're gonna talk october Fest, and we're gonna talk a
bunch of other things. So don't go anywhere. We will
be right back.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
And the teacher said, no, Bobby, there's no such time
as beer oclock fire that teacher. This is what's on
tap radio.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
We want to thank Superior Pest Control, West Michigan for
flooding our inbox with stories each and every week. Proud
sponsors of our research department, Superior Pest Control, you can
find them here in West Michigan at Superior Pest dot biz.
That's Superior Pest dot biz.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
M hm. You know, drowning, just thinking about it, drowning
has got to be a bad way to go, much
less thrown yourself in a boiling thing a beer.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
That's just a bad like a medieval torture.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Yeah, that's a bad way to go.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
And and and and to just say all right, you know,
I mean, the dude takes his hat off, sets it
down by the bat, climbs up a ladder, opens the door,
and he was like I had enough of this and
just goes and pulls a Greg lugainus.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Like, I get likes all this money after the dive,
all right, right, yeah, but I get you know, you
lose all this money in the stock market, crash, whatever.
But to go up that way. Oh that's terrible. I know,
I know that's a I mean, let's let's switch gears here.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
Yeah, yeah, by the oh way, yeah, Bonus fun fact
Peak Corps. He uh, you're not Peak Corps eight off course,
the founder of Corus Brewery, Oh yeah, out the window,
no kid, And he's like, yeah, all right, this prohibition
things no good. All right, we're bringing everybody down.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
Let's talk October thir Let's talk october Fest. All right,
I'm drinking this pull Honor october Fest, the original from
Munich october Fest. And I will be honest with you
from the Court of Unpopular Opinions, this is not my
favorite october Fest, not at all, not at a minute.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
Hold on, you said not your favorite, But does that
mean you don't like it?

Speaker 1 (21:43):
I wouldn't even say it's in my top five?

Speaker 2 (21:46):
Wow?

Speaker 1 (21:47):
Right, yeah, I know. Wow. And this is guys. Friends,
if you ever want to be a judge, you have
to go through what we call a beer judge certification
program and they'll basically break down every beer style and
they'll tell you what you're supposed to be tasting, smelling,
you know, appearance. And this is the beer they bring
when they talk about the mars and style to the table.

(22:08):
And it's just not my favorite. It's just but I
like it, but not my favorite.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
So that's the that's the baseline, that's the that's the
control beer in a test. And James, you're saying you
don't like it, so maybe you don't like october Fest
beer at all.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
Plot twist, plot twist, Yes.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
That's what it is. Test is flawed. I mean, let's
let's be honest. The first october Fest beer you brought
to the table, it wasn't even a real Octoberfest. Man,
guyse remember what it was he brought. He brought Saint
Arnold scottch Toober, I mean Octoberfest. And it's an ale
and of course it wins all these awards in.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
The Scottish but hey, exactly, at least when I go
on TV, I put a disclaimer out there. I'll tell
folks that no, this is not a real october Fest,
and then I'll go on to the you know, Boston
Beer Company. They're october Fest but you.

Speaker 2 (23:04):
Know what saying october Fest beer is though, it's really
freaking good. And when I was billing Texas, I was
crushing them. They they were so so, so good. I
had a great time. Also, want to thank the find
people out at Loam Pint Brewery and Magnolia. I stopped
by there and uh, I saw a good buddy, Ryan.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
No, I haven't seen Ryan in a minute. He was
down the street from me.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
I know, I just talked him about it.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
I haven't remember him. I didn't seen him since Hurricane
Barrel came through. That was how many one that was
in July?

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Yeah, I don't know. But look, I don't know if
you can see this here, but the glass I'm drinking
out of a brewing company, Buffalo by You Brewing Company.
But Ryan was one of the founders of Buffalo by
You Brewing Company and now now he's brewing for Loan Pint.

Speaker 1 (23:48):
Over there.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
Saw Heather saw Blakes, Yes, Trevor. Yeah, so I'm all
over there. So it was great to see them and
catch up and had some great beers. Had a double
rose for the first time in my life.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
That was good Tony. I love Lonepine. There're such good
people out and they're not in Magnolia, which is not
too north side of Houston, not too far from a
Renaissance festival which is kicking off pretty soon. So yeah,
all right, speaking of a fest, let's talk october Fest.
October Fest is over and the Google reviews are in,
so let's take a look on how october Fest went

(24:24):
in twenty twenty four. So let's do a little unofficial
fun fact for those that may be listening for the
show for the first time and don't know anything about
this october Fest that we're talking about.

Speaker 2 (24:33):
But every year october Fest really little beer party.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
It runs from late September to early October, and it
begins in Munich on October twelfth and eighteen ten as
a wedding celebration for our Varia Crown Prince Ludwig and
a five day ordeal continued annually until it eventually featured
food and beer halls. Now about two million gallons of
beer are consumed during october Fest each and every year.
But all the beer and food does not always results

(24:58):
in good times. That's because people they fled to the
Google and they they get it into reviews. So let's
look at some good reviews, and look AT's some some
bad reviews of the twenty twenty four October Fest. And
when the beer is being poured again the Planter october
Fest take this this.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
Mm hmmm, James still doesn't like it.

Speaker 1 (25:21):
All right, So this is what I don't understand. So
there's it's five stars, and so they based, you know,
five out of five, four to five, YadA, YadA, YadA.
So let's look at some of the some of the
this this review is four out of five. Good place,
but very tourist centric. Well duh, I mean, come on.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Now, says the tourist visiting.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
I'm sure right. Uh this one this this reviewer gave
five out of five, but wrote, the difficult thing is
getting in use.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
There's a lot of people.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
I mean, yeah, there's a giant festival where brings.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
And you're supposed to be This is not one of
the unwritten rules. This is just a rule. Make your
reservations months in advance.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
Here's that three out of five the place is too
full and not to be pampered as a customer. Perhaps
during the other periods of the year where there are
not as many tours due to the october Fest, this
service will be more suitable.

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Oh yeah, they're busy, so yeah, all right, so when
you go, when everybody else wants to go, it's very
popular and it's harder to get service. Huh. It's amazing
how that works.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
Here's an excellent review right here. Five out of five.
We drink beer, full of people, very good atmosphere. Here's
full or a four to five. A typical place, decent food,
by service that leaves something to be desired. Two out
of five Here, crowds of people, crowds of people. The
stewards should have been intervened here. I'm not sure. Maybe
there was hostility going on. I guess I don't really say.

(26:42):
Here's one out of five, and again we're talking about
how Google reviewed this year's october Fest. Terrible experience. We
sit in an uncomfortable outdoor seat. We left, never to return.

Speaker 2 (26:55):
Good ridding, spy. Hey it's not an airport. You don't
have to announce your departure exactly. Get it out, all right.

Speaker 1 (27:02):
Here's one out of five. We felt like ghost to
the staff. We cannot ring up a customer at all.
And here's a longer one I'll do one more just
for time purposes. But in order to get a seat
at the Hoffenhaus in Munich, we first have to stretch
our elbows. It almost borders martial arts, is what we

(27:22):
have to do. When we finally have a seat. We're waiting.
Time is until service comes to actually completely okay. The
food was okay, but nothing more. It's more mass production.
I can say the following about the ambience. If you
prefer a volume level at which you can have a
normal conversation, you come to the wrong place at the
hoffenbrough House and then one last morning a good place

(27:45):
for meals. So that's so the reviews are in. Octoberfest
is over. But the reviews and all over the place
a lot of people complaining about the wait staff and stuff.
But you know, you have to understand they're very busy.
There's people coming from all over the world. I don't
know where they were like expecting, but uh yeah.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
So I don't know either. All right, Well, all right,
well that's those are the reviews case. Maybe they would
have benefited James if they had a couple of these
unwritten rules of october Fest.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
And this is where it comes to play because with
Great American Beer Festival, whatever festival you're attending, there are
some rules that you need to bide by.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
Right, So first thing I want to clear up is
if you walked in these are unwritten rules from someone
who attended october Fest and said I didn't know this,
and then they learned it. And so the first thing
is is if those people who gave it a one
star review complaining about the service were worried that they
were not being served because they were demonstrating cultural misappropriation

(28:46):
by wearing drndles and leader hosen and not being from there, well,
just so you know, that is not the case, because
it is perfectly acceptable no matter where you're from, to
sport the darndal's ladies or leader hosen for the men.
So you are not culturally misappropriating by doing that, So
don't worry about that. Also, if you walked in and

(29:08):
you're looking around and you see all the chicken dinners
coming out and you're like, where are the brats, Well,
there are plenty of sausages to eat, but the chicken
dinner is by far the most popular meals served, So
go with the flow. I know you went there expecting
to see nothing but krout and sausage. But chicken dinners
are the way to go. Also, if you're thinking, well,

(29:29):
I'm from the United States, we tip there, but I
hear in other countries they don't tip, so I'm not
gonna tip well at Octoberfest. You tip, you tip your waitresses.
You make sure you take care of them and tip
well because they can be carrying up to six of
those stins at one time. Oh wait, did you call

(29:49):
them steins? Don't call them steins. They are not steins.
They are a moss or a moss krug, which means
one leader. Don't call them steins. That's an unwritten rule.
Maybe that's why you didn't get served. And finally, the
last unwritten rule on the darndals, ladies, there's a bow
on your darndal, and if you have the bow on

(30:12):
the right side, you are a married woman and you
are in a relationship. If you have it on the
left side, you are open to a relationship and a
little flirty. And if you're wearing it on the back,
you're a waitress. So maybe maybe you weren't flirty enough
and wearing it on the left side. I don't know
if that's the reason but those are some of the

(30:33):
unwritten rules of Octoberfest.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Oh one out of five from another reviewer. The waitress
try to force me to give a tip.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
That's one of the rules.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
All right, we can't take a break. Oh, I love
Octoberfest and never disappoints. Coming up, we're gonna talk about
where to find the cheapest beer in the world and
Merle Haggard in the news. All this is so much more.
Hang with us, We'll be right back.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
On average, humans walk nine hundred miles per year and
drink twenty two gallons of beer, which means the average
human gets forty one miles per gallon. Not ben, what's
on tap? Radio continues, All.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
Right, it is true that when I'm out of Octoberfest beers,
I still have a lot left. But I'll start going
to my winter seasonals, my winter warmers, old ales, barley wines,
Christmas beers. Yeah, but uh still got the uh pull

(31:47):
on right here? Although empty, Oh, speaking of empty, Chad
bill were empty?

Speaker 2 (31:55):
Empty?

Speaker 1 (31:56):
All right, go ahead and crack your next beer, and
I will be bringing my next beer soon. We got
a lot of stories to get to.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Ready aim fire, Boom reload. That's one of the yells
from Texas A and m I went to the football game,
and that's what we just did. We fired off the
old barley wine, scotch l whatever it was. And now
we're keeping in the spirit of Octoberfest Harbor Light bill

(32:24):
over there on third, Mike, the gentleman who procured this beer,
is gonna tell us what we're drinking. Yeah. While I
was on assignment for What's on Tap Radio down in Bentonville, Arkansas,
a fest beer a golden lagger and a quick shout
out to Bo and Kenneth from Bentonville Brewing for swapping

(32:44):
beers with me and giving me the opportunity to bring
this on the show and have a good taste of it.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
Nice.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
What do you think overall? Great flavor, It's lacking a
little bit in carbonation. Head retention was non existent. I
mean it disappeared really really quick. But I'm going to
knock it for head retention. But flavor is good. It's
right on point. I mean, yeah, that's multi Yeah, it's
it's what you want and what you expect in an

(33:10):
october Fest. I mean a little bit. Yeah, I think
you're right. It's a little bit multier and sweeter than
it's like almost like a hybrid between an Octoberfest or
a Marsin and a fest beer fest beer. It's going
to be that lighter beer. It's got that color going on,
but it tastes more marsin. Yeah, a little bit sweeter,
a little bit right over a real solid foundation, a

(33:32):
toasted maltiness. Oh thank you for not using that one
word that we banned. No, I do not want to.
I had somebody, I had somebody send me this and
they described this beer, and you know who it was.
It was freaking I'm gonna tell you right now. I
was so fired up. Josh Bass. There's a name right there,
Josh Bass from Brazos Valley Brewing Company. And that guy

(33:56):
sent me this and here's what he sent me, and
I was just dying. I mean, he sent this to me.
I got a picture of it right here. He says,
this beer is an American style amber with a mault
forward backbone, and I shut up, shut up. He's like,
thought of you with a malt forward back I'm like,
oh my gosh, stop it, stop it, stop it. So Chad.

(34:20):
Sometimes you don't know. I have a pet peeve about
saying multi backbone because it's one of the most overused
ways to describe a beer, and there are a lot
more creative ways to do it. I'm tired of it.
It's overused. So anyway, so.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
I'm gonna put a confession out there. I get jealous
when Chad gets to do all these fun facts. I'm like, man,
I want to drop some fun facts, but that means
Chad's bit. But I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm
gonna pull this microphone up real close, real quick, and
I'm want to drop a fun fact if you don't mind.
So Fest Beer and Chad talked about how it's a
lighter beer, lighter body, and the reason being is because

(34:58):
in the nineteen seventies, Polanner developed the fest Beer because
they didn't want people to get as full, because you know,
Marsin's are filling and you're down in pretzels and brats
and I guess chicken according to according to uh the segment,
and it's filling. And so they developed a lighter version
of a Marsin so it wouldn't be as filling. And

(35:21):
then that came the fest Beer, and that has been
your official not fun factor of the week.

Speaker 2 (35:27):
Because it's way more fun than a guy killing killing
him start jumping into a boiling vat of beer. All right,
let's get let's let's stay on the fun fun. Yes,
here's a fun train right here. Maybe you could take
the fun train through Houston and catch a little bit
of culture. We've talked about this before. The iconic beer
can House in Houston.

Speaker 1 (35:47):
It is a real It is so cool.

Speaker 2 (35:50):
It is.

Speaker 1 (35:50):
If you ever get a chance to come to Houston,
stop by. They are so nice. The people that run
a little it's like it's a lot, that's a house,
but they'll give you a little tour and they're it's
so nice, and they'll talk to you about the history
of the house. And it's the house completely made out
of beer cans.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
Yeah, yep, so this has been this has been open
for quite some time. But the exterior of the house
is covered in roughly fifty thousand crushed beer cans. That
the founder of this, John Milkovich, Yeah, when he created this,
he's like, well, I don't want to paint the house.
So he started crushing beer cans and putting them together

(36:26):
and covered the whole house. He's like, shingles, why would
I put shingles on the house. Beer cans here we go.
Oh well, the trim around the windows is starting to
rot beer cans, and he just put beer cans all
around the house. And it's now an art gallery. It
has since been purchased and it's owned by an art
collective group that maintains the space and displays other pieces

(36:48):
of art. Why are we talking about this, Well, just
recently they have partnered with Saint Arnold Brewing Company in
order to draw more attendees to the iconic home and
piece of art. Saint Arnd Brewing Company is now making
it possible for the hours in the number of days

(37:09):
to be expanded for more people to go, and it
is now free admission.

Speaker 1 (37:15):
Oh that's cool.

Speaker 2 (37:15):
So thank you Saint Arnold Brewing Company for investing in this.
This is a I mean, this is a really cool
way to just give back to the community in a
way that says, hey, we're not just going to make
a donation or we're not just going to do you know,
we're not going to pay for some piece of art
to add to the collection. What we want to do
is we want to make it possible for more people
to go to see it, and we want to take

(37:37):
away anybody objecting to go and see it because they
don't want to pay the admissions. So congratulations, thank you, actually,
thank you, thank you, thank you to the Saint Arnald
Brewing Company who is contributing to the Orange Show Center
for Visionary Art. That's the group that owns it now
and making it possible for more people to go because

(37:59):
their goal is to be open for five days a
week with expanded hours starting from I believe it's ten
am to four pm, and who knows where it goes
from there.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
But I'll be honest, I'll be honest with you. It's
probably been about ten years since I've been out there.
It's not even far from where I'm broadcasting from right now.
But yeah, in the early days of What's on tap ready,
like year one or something, I never interviewed the wife.
The husband's you know, long been deceased, but the wife

(38:27):
was there, and I met the wife and she was
talking about the history and why her husband did it
and all that. I didn't even interview. I was just
there and just fascinating, fascinating. So if you ever get
the chance to stop by in the Houston area, just
swing on by. It's really cool.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
It's great that he just didn't want to paint the house.
He's like, yeah, you know, I'm just take a bunch
of these beer cans and just start tacking them up
on the house.

Speaker 1 (38:49):
I remember asking her. I was like, so, hoa wasn't
really a thing back then.

Speaker 2 (38:53):
Huh, Karen, here, you can't put those beer cans.

Speaker 1 (38:58):
Up real quick. We got a few minutes in this segment.
But speaking of art, oh Man, this is an employee
that oo and did a So there's an employee at
a museum in the Netherlands who threw out two empty
beer cans that were actually priceless pieces of modern arts. Yeah,
check this out. The hand painted cans were made to
look like two empty beer cans someone carelessly left behind,

(39:21):
and they really do look like that. They are part
of a larger collection of cans titled All Good Times
We Spent Together, which is a great name for a piece.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
Very awesome name with empty beer cans.

Speaker 1 (39:33):
And the museum elevator is all glass, and they were
sitting on top of the glass ceiling. And actually I
have a photo of him and we'll probably post too.
Our social apt on was on top radio an elevator
repairman didn't realize they were an art exhibit and thought
someone had just left them there, so he tossed them
in the trash to help out well the museum. The

(39:54):
museum's curator noticed them missing, and luckily the trash had
been tap that day, so they were able to find
the cans and clean them up. They say, the museum
beaters no ill toward the worker who was just doing
his job in good faith, and the museum director said
that in a way, it's a testament to the effectiveness
of the artist work.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
And so I tell you what, what if it wasn't
art and there were cans up on top of the
glass elevator and they and the custodian goes, eh, it's
probably art. And then the next day it's like, hey,
how did you miss this? You're fired. It's like, what
do you expect from me?

Speaker 1 (40:34):
This rappers? I can't win this wopper. Rapper's been here
for three months. I thought it was art. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:41):
A museum employee threw out two empty beer cans that
were actually priceless pieces of arts. Thinking, speaking of art,
so have you seen.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
Art price, There's there's stuff like that there. Yeah, Okay,
Downtown Grand Rappers.

Speaker 1 (40:52):
Yeah, so there you go, Art talking to Art. All right,
we gotta take a break. Coming up our number one
in the books, Our number two coming up, where we
talking about finding the cheapest beer in the world according
to a man on TikTok brew is across the country
helping each other out, and Hurricane Heleen relief efforts. And
Merle Haggard. We're talking about Merle Haggard. All coming up
in our number two.

Speaker 3 (41:11):
We'll be right back when someone says, hold my beard.
You know a trip to the e Er is in

A lot of good stories in the news about to
get the hold my beer and watch this finishing my Octoberfest,
my Pullana Octoberfest. And uh, I still got more reviews, Chad,
I still want to get I'll get to more reviews.
I'll pepper them through our number two. But we still

(42:51):
got a lot to get to this hour. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
Can I guess what one of the reviews was? One star?
Absolutely zero Russian Imperial Stouts.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
Yeah, we're the IPAs.

Speaker 2 (43:02):
I didn't see one marshmallow glitter beer anywhere at this
october Fest. One star.

Speaker 1 (43:09):
Oh my gosh. Yeah, they're all over the place with
these overcrowded tours. Rip off, they said, out of one
out of five stars. But yeah, plenty more to get
to this hour. I'm almost finished with this one, and
I'm trying to debate which beer I'm gonna go with next.

Speaker 2 (43:27):
Y'all have a beer to crowd you have all kinds
of mental and like like personal debates other I'm not
sure what glass I'm gonna use, I'm not sure what
beer I'm gonna open.

Speaker 1 (43:35):
We're almost halfway through October, and so I only got
so many opportunities to bring these Octoberfest beers because nobody
really wants to hear october Fest beers me talking about
Octoberfest beers in November for some weird, dumb reason. I mean,
I do, but for some reason, people they think there's
an expiration date on Octoberfest because as we're October written

(43:56):
on the can, right, But it is I get, I
get the consumers.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Every time you open an october Fest beer after October thirty,
first a kitten dies.

Speaker 1 (44:08):
That's not true, but that's how people.

Speaker 2 (44:10):
You're right, it's a puppy.

Speaker 1 (44:12):
You're right, Yeah, that's what people think. All right, let
me go ahead and do this. I'm move this around,
play this, move this, and then do this.

Speaker 3 (44:21):
Hold my beer and watch this brought to you by
the ring aldup ten Hacen Insurance Group, where they'll cover
you for just about everything except this.

Speaker 1 (44:30):
So, Chad, how was your uh, how's your travels when
you came to Texas and went back home. You flew, right,
you didn't drive.

Speaker 2 (44:37):
We flew, Yeah, we flew. I mean it was a
whirlwind tour. I mean I flew in, got in at midnight, boom,
ran out to college station, bounced around a little bit,
got back, went to a loan pint, went to a wedding,
and flew home and that was it. I mean in
out when overall.

Speaker 1 (44:56):
You flew back rather early on Monday, but when.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
You Yeah, I got up at two thirty in the
morning to catch a flight at six.

Speaker 1 (45:02):
So I'm gonna safe to assume no airport beers at
that early in the morning.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
The only airport beer I had was on the way out,
where we stopped at Founders in Grand Rapids at the
Prospect Hill tap wall or tap room there inside the
security and had a beer there.

Speaker 1 (45:20):
Okay. We talked about how you know, people drinking on planes,
they're behaving themselves these days, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (45:28):
They're like disorderly conducts way down as down like forty
percent wed we reported or something.

Speaker 1 (45:32):
Yeah, speaking of a hole my beer and watched this.
So when someone is hammered on an airport runway, the
pilot might turn around and go back to the gate. However,
in this situation, the pilot could not do that because
this woman wasn't actually on the plane. She was driving
her silver Nissan on the runway. So police in Oklahoma

(45:56):
arrested a woman accused of driving drunk at the Tulsa
River Airports. Air traffic controller had to call the cops
and said the Nissan was blocking a runway where a
plane was trying to land. See a pilot was taxing
his plane saw the Nissan, so he got out and

(46:16):
confronted the driver, and he saw the car was full
of beer cans, so he reached in the car and
did what a smart person would do, took the keys
and the driver. Her name was Bonnie Campbell, and she
was arrested for felony aggravated DUI and was taken to
the hospital for treatments. An officer said they found eighteen

(46:40):
empty cans inside the vehicle, in an empty six pack
container and a garbage bag full of beer cans. She
blew a point three four on the States breathalyzer test
times the legal limits.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
Point three four, and she was able to I don't
I mean, there's no way she knew what planet she
was on. Let alone that she was on a runway
for an airliner. But how do you even function on
any level? How can you? I don't think you can.
That's you're dead.

Speaker 1 (47:15):
I want to know. In a in a post nine
to eleven role.

Speaker 2 (47:17):
We live in, you're definitely unconscious on a post.

Speaker 1 (47:20):
In a post nine to eleven rold we live in.
How did she get on the runway? It's what I want?

Speaker 2 (47:24):
Yeah, there you go. I mean, I gotta take my
shoes and my belt and my computer all out and
throw it in a bin. And this lady drives her
Nissan up after picking up the kids from soccer practice.
And hey, now does it say later on at all
what she was doing there? Because I have a theory.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
No, it does not say, although you know what it
does say, oh yeah, uh yeah. Officers said they found
eighteen empty beer cans inside the vehicle, along with a
cardboard box of course lights this.

Speaker 2 (47:57):
Summer ball, right, all right, at least we know, all right, well,
you know, inquiring minds want to know. And the other
thing I want to know, and this is, this is
what I'm predicting. I'm predicting that her boyfriend just broke
up with her and was going away with her sister
on a flight to somewhere, probably Florida, and she knew
which flight it was, and she drove through the fence

(48:19):
all the way across that field, got out there on
the runway and blocked that planes like you are not
leaving with my man. That's my that's my story, and
I'm sticking with it.

Speaker 1 (48:28):
If there's any developments in the story, we'll bring it
to you. But you're hold my beard and watched this
this week a woman was caught drunk driving on an
airport runway.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
Wow, that is one thing. No things you never think
you're gonna hear or have to say. As a pilot.
It was like, uh, yes, tower, this is flight one
two seven. We are unable to take off due to
a silver Nissan block.

Speaker 1 (48:55):
We have a silver Nissan on the runway. Ah yeah,
zero point three four on the breath lesser tests. And
this has been brought to you by a renoled day
an insurance group where they'll as show you for many things,
but not arriving drunk on an airport after knocking out
in a case or eighteen pack of Core's lights.

Speaker 2 (49:18):
Oh my gosh, that's so funny.

Speaker 1 (49:21):
All right, all right, that's your hold up here and
watch this. Let's take a break. Coming up, Hey, let's
talk about Merle Haggard. We haven't talked about Merle Haggard
in a while. All this is so much more, including
the cheapest place to find a beer. We'll be right
back today.

Speaker 2 (49:36):
We are heroes.

Speaker 3 (49:39):
Heroes who rescued some beer that was trapped in a bottle.
This is what's on tap radio.

Speaker 2 (50:01):
All right, welcome back to What's on Tap Radio. Shout
out again to our buddy Josh Bass at Bress Valley
Brewing Company out there in Brentham, Texas, where you can
get yourself a Mama tried, I p a or you
can get yourself a brown eyed girl brown ale which

(50:22):
has a nice multi backbone. I hate him for sending
me that. If you just if you missed out on that. Yeah,
Josh Bass, good friend of the show. Oh he's a
hoop man. He's a good guy. You're ever in Texas
and you get that way in you're headed toward Austin.
It's about halfway from Houston to Austin. Great place to stop.

(50:46):
A nice little German village out there and BBB Bress
Valley Brewing Company that's good stuff. So we just came.
We were talking about hold my beer and watch this,
and you know, we talked about disorderly conduct on planes
being down. But you know where we haven't seen disorderly

(51:07):
conduct change at all? On beer radio shows and podcasts.
That's right, it's exactly the same for the last eleven years.
We have been misbehaving the exact same time and the
exact same way, each and every week. James. There's only
one other place that I have seen this kind of
disorderly conduct, and I think it's time to do something

(51:29):
about it, James. The other place I've seen it baseball games. Yeah,
and I think it's time that you and I we
do what's been proposed happens at Major League baseball games. James.
No more beer drinking while doing beer radio. We're gonna
get rid of the beer. We're gonna stop drinking beer

(51:51):
all together. No more disorderly No.

Speaker 1 (51:54):
At least we're civilized, are we? We are civilized. I
don't think the history of the show we've ever thrown
a beer can at each other or again.

Speaker 2 (52:04):
Bill's like, Bill's like, hey, listen, I sponsor this show.
You pull that crab. I'm pulling my sponsorship. I'll have
other stuff to do on Sunday afternoons. Hey, hey, and
helping us keep the lights on. Oh wait, never mind,
the lights just went out. Light Bill pulls.

Speaker 1 (52:23):
It makes me anxious going on that show. There's just
too much hostility.

Speaker 2 (52:29):
Actually, what helps us out is actually having a beer.
And that's what we're gonna do right now. I believe
James glass is empty and empty, and Bill and I
are empty too. And Bill just poured a beer that
he brought lebray of brown from Fossil Cove Brewing down
in Arkansas, a Belgian inspired brown ale with a blend

(52:55):
of yeasts. Yeah, hold on a second, a Belgian inspired
brown ale. You know, we got to give you tasting
notes on this. If we don't, then we are doing
a disservice. Because when was the last time you went
in the grocery store, you went into your favorite beer
store or even a tap room and said, oh, look,
it's a Belgian inspired brown ale.

Speaker 1 (53:14):
Of course I'll have that.

Speaker 2 (53:15):
Let's see.

Speaker 1 (53:17):
For those that don't know that makes no sense.

Speaker 2 (53:19):
I'm with you on this one.

Speaker 1 (53:21):
I'm I mean, and I know that we may lose
some folks on that because they don't know what we're
talking about. There's no such thing as a Belgian inspired
brown ale.

Speaker 2 (53:28):
That's like saying it's a white stout. There's no such
thing as a white stout. But I'm not I don't
get much Belgian out of it. It's a nice brown ale.
It's not bad as a brown ale. I'm getting. I'm
getting chocolate notes and lots of chocolate Belgian beers.

Speaker 1 (53:44):
For Belgian for those that are know Belgian beers, you
get a little candy sugar and there none of that.
That's where you can get a brown ale. You'll get
like some nuttiness.

Speaker 2 (53:53):
So things just has a little coriander. I don't know.
I got zero coriander. I've got zero candy sugar. I've
got zero Belgian esters. I'm not getting any of the
the banana or dark fruit esters. You know, banana esters
are not You're not gonna find banana and dark fruit
in the same beer. But I'm not getting that Belgian
yeast flavor of like, uh, you know, dried cherries or anything.

(54:18):
There's nothing coming in at this that makes me think
that it's a Belgian beer. Well, they did say it's
a Belgian inspired Okay, all right, so were they Maybe
there's that Belgian beer while I bet you it's a
nice example of a brown aile.

Speaker 1 (54:33):
I got it. There's a Belgian brewer there who inspired
the beer. That's where it is.

Speaker 2 (54:38):
Ah, yeah, could well be.

Speaker 1 (54:41):
That's all right, let's talk, let's talk baseball and sports
and all sorts of things. I'm gonna crack a beer
so I'm out of my pole on or. But I'm
gonna continue my October Festival because what I need to
do is start making room for my winter warmers. I'm
gonna be coming in soon. I still got a few
more October fest being to the show, but like I said,

(55:03):
got a big room. And with that being said, I'm
bringing a beer back to the show, one of my favorites.
I'm gonna do it again because I talked about it earlier,
but the classic Oh my gosh, dude, seriously, yes, I
told you have to make room in my fridge, Chad.
I literally just said that.

Speaker 2 (55:19):
I'm glad that this show is your dumping ground for
your overstock. My gosh, dude, Hey, guys, guess what is
he Guess what he's drinking?

Speaker 1 (55:28):
Guess. Samuel Adams, Boston, Shock october Fest.

Speaker 2 (55:32):
Yeah there, Boston october Fest. Yeah, exactly, the Boss October
and he's drinking it out of a w O t
R what's on tap radio also known as a water glass,
not the Boston Logger glass. And hey, James, I bet
it tastes just like the three that you've had earlier
this year on this show.

Speaker 1 (55:50):
So I'm not gonna bore you. So I'm not gonna
bore you with a tasting notes, but just know that
it's one of my favorites. And I I went on
record saying that the Polana october Fest is not one
of my favorite octoberfests, even though it's probably one of
the most popular octoberfests in the entire world. Brut in
Germany is the official October Fest of the Munich october Fest.
But to me, not even on my top five. You

(56:11):
know it's on my top five, the Octoberfest from Samuel Adams.

Speaker 2 (56:14):
You know what I'm gonna tell you right now? You
know what, stop talking because you know what the only.

Speaker 1 (56:18):
Thing you know?

Speaker 2 (56:19):
You know what I feel like doing right now. I
feel like throwing baseballs and beer at you.

Speaker 1 (56:24):
But we just said that we're civilized. We don't do that.

Speaker 2 (56:26):
No, but maybe you know what, you're a big baseball
fan and you like the entire baseball experience.

Speaker 1 (56:32):
I do like the Yeah, and that's why I love
playf I love playoff baseball. Yeah, speaking of hostility, you
want to talk about hostility? Watch playoff baseball?

Speaker 2 (56:41):
Yeah? Oh wait, how the how are the Astros doing this? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (56:43):
Not the year? Oh, we'll try to getting.

Speaker 2 (56:45):
Shut up, Chad Well.

Speaker 1 (56:47):
Growing up growing up a baseball fan, an Astros fan,
an Oilers fan, my mom always told me, Hey, there's
always next year. And that's Oh that's the words I
live by.

Speaker 2 (56:56):
There's always way if you want to if you want
to know what that really feels like, just asking a
Detroit Lions fan. Yeah, so they've been saying since nineteen
fifty eight. All right, James, you were telling me about
some of your favorite fans in the world are in
Los Angeles, the Dodger fans.

Speaker 1 (57:12):
Oh I love them.

Speaker 2 (57:13):
Yeah, so you don't like something that's going on. What
were you telling me they were doing recently?

Speaker 1 (57:19):
Dodger fans are the worst. They are the absolute worst.
And I know if you're a fan of show and
you're listening, you're like, hey, I'm a Dodgs fan. Yeah,
you may be cool, but the fans that are sitting
in the in La terrible, just terrible people. Not only
did they fight, they fight each other. They fight each other.
But now you know that there's this big series begainst

(57:40):
San Diego and the Dodgers trying to advance to the NLCS.
And I know that so far, he is the left
fielder for the Padres. He's taunting the the Dodger fans. Well,
I guess Dodger fans had enough of his taunting, and
so they started throwing beer cans at them. And they
were throwing beer cans at uh, Fernando Taddi's junior also,

(58:02):
and they had to. They delayed the game because they
couldn't get people controlled, just out of control. Just play baseball, guys.
Well they did it first. They started him.

Speaker 2 (58:11):
They were taunting us. Oh I love that. I love
that they started it. They started it's.

Speaker 1 (58:17):
If you go on, if you go on Dodger social.
There's nothing wrong with what happened, is it what they're saying.
So now you know, of course they've come out and
Major League Baseball's come out and say, hey, if you're
seen throwing anything caught throw anything, you'll be banned for
life or something like that because they can't act civilize.
But that's the hostility of playoff baseball and football. Football

(58:37):
is the same way.

Speaker 2 (58:37):
Yeah, well, I got I got something fun to share
with you. So I know we're coming up on a
break here in just a second, so I'm gonna just
share this story real quick. I stumbled onto this podcast.
I'm not gonna tell you what podcast it was, but
this guy comes out and he says it's time to
ban beer sales at baseball games. I was like, oh,
wait a minute. You want to take away America's passed.

(58:59):
You want to take a America's pastime and combine it
with America's second favorite pastime watching, you know, baseball, and
you want to go ahead and take away beer drinking
from baseball games. Yeah. So I listened to his podcast.
I got two minutes in and he says, all right,
let me just start by saying I don't drink any alcohol.
I don't even like the taste of beer. And I'm like,
and that's why you are not an authority on this subject.

(59:19):
Shut up. No, we are not going to ban beer
drinking at baseball can which money.

Speaker 1 (59:25):
You're an idiot, made the profits, made it happens. But
people do need accevilize. All right, we gotta take a break.
Coming up, still got to talk about Merle Haggard the
cheapest beer in the world. Where is that? According to TikTok?
And of course we got to talk about breweries coming
together to help in Hurricane Helen relief efforts. All this
is so much more. Hang with this, We'll right back.

Speaker 3 (59:46):
Beer has hops, hops or plants. Plants make salad, so
beer is salad. Yeah, what's on tapardio?

Speaker 2 (59:56):
James and Chad talking about beer? All right, we are

(01:00:20):
back and we have decided to keep the show going
with beer. We considered for a moment that we were
going to stop drinking beer because of the disorderly conduct,
and we saw what was happening at baseball stadiums. We
listened to a podcast where there was a guy who

(01:00:43):
we affectionately referred to as an idiot as wanting.

Speaker 1 (01:00:48):
To band beer at stadiums.

Speaker 2 (01:00:52):
Yes, but you listen to his podcast and he says,
all right, I don't drink I don't drink alcohol. I
don't like the taste of beer. I don't like oh
and we're gonna trust you to captain this ship. All right,
the guy who is completely biased is gonna go ahead
and tell us how we're gonna enjoy America's second favorite pastime.
In case you're wondering, everybody knows, you know, baseball. They

(01:01:14):
call it America's pastime, And well, everybody's real pastime is
drinking drink, drinking beer. Also, it's just a stupid idea.
It's just a dumb idea. So Harbor Light Bill on
third Mic over there, Harbor Light Brewing Company hooking us
up with some beer. And we just finished the Librea
brown Ale, which is Belgian inspired somehow, but I don't

(01:01:38):
even know how it's inspired by Belgium. But it was
a really good brown ale, so we'll just call it
a good brown ale and move on. And then he
just cracked open a traditional bach beer from another from
Bentonville Brewing Company. Lawyers Hogs and Money, Hogs and money. Well,
here's hogs in Money.

Speaker 1 (01:01:59):
Where that brew out of Bill?

Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Bentonville, Arkansas. Yeah, you can tell he was in Arkansas.
He picked up a lot of things there. Speaking of
picking up things, you know, I was hoping to score
some beer and bring some things back here to the
Great Lake State. Fortunately we packed very light and we
weren't able to do that. But while I was there,

(01:02:25):
we had there was beer available inside Kyle Field at
Texas A and M. There's beer available at Michigan State University,
which they brought in last year. Very exciting. And so
while we have this one guy out there doing a
podcast trying to get beer banned, we hear what's on

(01:02:47):
tab radio. We like to take a different approach. We
are actually not going to ask you to bam beer,
but we are asking more stadiums to adopt it. And well,
I have got good news. In fact, it's a happy day.
Oh it's a happy day. Oh yes, ladies and gentlemen.

(01:03:12):
In the Big Ten, damn the Math Conference, because they
have sixteen teams or something like that, there's one stadium
that has been a holdout and not serving any alcohol,
and that is a University of Nebraska. Well just recently announced,

(01:03:36):
Oh happy days. University president doctor Jeffrey Gold says that
next season, the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season,
beer will be sold during the University of Nebraska football games.
Oh Happy, Happy, and the Big Ten, Damn the Math

(01:03:58):
conference is all in on beer. So while one guy
is trying to ban it, Yeah, the Nebraska holdout is
now complying. And why is that, Well, because that's what
people want and people pay money. Money, lots of money,
lots of money, lots and lots of money. Oh, this

(01:04:22):
is great. They were the only Big ten school, sorry,
the only Big ten damn the math school left not
selling beer. Next season they will shed that title. They
they're gonna be the Mississippi of home brewing. What's the
last state to allow homebrewing? Mississippi? And I thought you're

(01:04:44):
gonna say university like Moscow if that was like ten. Now, no, No,
that's it. Man. That's pretty awesome. So there you go.
That's uh. That's that makes me happy.

Speaker 1 (01:04:57):
I bet it makes the fans happy as well, because
probably doing a lot of tailgating. You know, they probably
weren't coming into the game till like the you know,
second quarter, because they're all there tailgating. You're like, well,
you know, we can't drink inside the stadium, so we
might as well just sit here and parking lot of tailgating.

Speaker 2 (01:05:11):
Yeah, and even if they have metal detectors and everything,
they're smuggling in like fireball and a plastic bottle.

Speaker 1 (01:05:16):
Right, and there's a sock yep. So, hey, shout up
to them. Good job.

Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
That's all right. Wait, wait to get into the twenty
first century.

Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
Hey, speaking of tailgating people what they want? All right,
speak of tailgating. Cant. I'm gonna shout out real quick.
I'm out there at the Texans home game, every Texans
home game, and I was out at the last home
game and I'm walking towards my car and where I'm parked,
I see this table like set up right next to
my car, and there's this giant tent where these tailgaters

(01:05:48):
have set up. And I was like, oh, there's a
table blocking in my car. I can't even get into
my car. And so I just walk up and I
was like, oh, something smell is good. And they were like,
are you hungry? And I was like, I can eat.
And the Texans were playing the Buffalo Bills, And I
want to give a shout out to the Texans brew crew. Now,
the Texans brew crew. They've been going out to every

(01:06:09):
Texans game since the Texans early days. And they were
telling me that every game that they you know, they're
tailgating whatever team they're playing, they cooked that cassine for
that city. So that day they're cooking wings, Buffalo Wings
because they were playing the Bills. And so I got
to talking with them and they said they're sponsored by

(01:06:31):
Saloon Door Brewing Company, and so Saloon Door donates the
beer for them. Yeah, so they pulled they had a
keg of their IPA, I forget the name of it.
And I was just hanging out with those guys, really
cool guys and ladies out at the Texans Blue Lot
the Texans brew Creuse. So I want to give a

(01:06:52):
shout out to those guys. Fed me and just got
to meet with them, and I was talking to him
about what's on top radio and they're like, oh man,
we got it out, So I hope they're listening. So
shout out to you guys. Yeah, and that was pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
Jason at slet Door too, Man, that's great. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:07:07):
And then great, so speaking of college football and and tailgating,
guess who's coming to town in the mitton? Oh, guess
who's coming to visit?

Speaker 2 (01:07:20):
Come on? You said, jj Watt, You're close?

Speaker 1 (01:07:25):
Is it Josh Bass? We were talking about Josh Bass.

Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
No, not Josh Bass. It is Mikey G from Radio
kia Kuk. He is coming his Iowa Hawkeyes are playing
the Spartans.

Speaker 1 (01:07:37):
We talking about a Hawkeyes fan.

Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
Dude, that guy is insane season ticket holder fane so
Radio kia Cuck. He owns the radio station in Keyakuk, Iowa,
which broadcast What's on Tap radio, and he is coming
to stay. He and his bride are coming to hang
out with super fan number one Christine and I and uh,
we're taking him to the game tailgate.

Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
I'm so jealous.

Speaker 2 (01:08:02):
Get on a plane, pal, we can Hey, dude, we
can run a best of episode. Let's go now.

Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
If I'm hanging out with Mikey G. And you got
like in one room, we're definitely doing a show. Like
I'm not doing a bet. No, facts with great minds
come together in one room. No you don't. You don't
mail it in. No, you put something together. It's like, Uh,
we are the world, we are the child. Hey, real quick,

(01:08:30):
why we have a few minutes. Speaking of coming together,
I want to give a shout out. I love hearing
stories like this with the hurricane that's ravaged through Florida
through the Carolinas. Uh, fresh water was one of the
biggest needs across the ravage of a hurricane. Aleen brewis
across the country are stepping up by taking a break
from canning brew to canning water, and from Charlotte, North

(01:08:53):
Carolina to Charleston, South Carolina, even Colorado brewers are coming
together to help supply the basic need. And these are
just a few at no Doab Brewing Company in Charlotte'
shout out to those guys. They're eager to do what
they can to help the communities. So they said in
a quote, as of today, we have done three days
of runs, which is roughly about forty five hundred cases
of water, and all of it, with the exception of

(01:09:15):
three pallets, have been picked up through a distributor and
they're shipping it off to where the areas are in need.
And I'm gonna go and rid of this press release.
I like this. This is from Devil's Foot Brew And
they said, hey, friends, many of you know that we
had to take a pause in operations and are closed
our doors for a bit to recover, recess and rebuild

(01:09:35):
after the hurricane. But that hasn't stopped us from helping
our community. So after the past five days, we transformed
into a distribution hub to help our friends No Doll
Brewing resident culture Sierra Nevada and North Carolina and volunteers
and amazing staff, and they are helping distribute sixteen hundred
gallons of water, dozens of palettes of food, diapers, clothing,

(01:09:57):
and hygiene products throughout the communit need for those in need.
So they're still taking donations, but I love hearing stories
about this where they're coming together taking a break from
brewin beer and start canning water for those in need.
Because if you've been in a hurricane, because you know,
we went through Hurricane Barrel there, yeah, Hurricane Beryl earlier
this year in my part of the country, it's nice

(01:10:21):
to get help. And so I love how brewies step
up and teamed up to you know, take a pause
from brewing and to canned water, because yeah, water's in necessity,
and it's hot. It's hot, especially you know those parts
of the country. But yeah, brewis across the country switching
into canning water instead of beer in efforts to help

(01:10:42):
those that have been infected by the hurricane. So shout
out to those guys. All right, we got to take
a break coming up in the last segment, let's talk
about we got to talk about Merle Haggard. I love
the story. And a man on TikTok swears he found
the cheapest beer in the world. Will tell you where
that is all coming up In the last segment, What's
on Tap Radyo hang with us. We'll be right back.

Speaker 3 (01:11:00):
And Jim, hey h stop trying to make everybody happy.
You're not beer. You've got What's on tap radio?

Speaker 2 (01:11:08):
Jane chat talking about we don't thank our friends at
Tantrik Brewing Company, located in Alegant, Michigan, right there on
the Kalamazoo River. Beautiful sites, beautiful beer, beautiful food, and yeah,
you see the beer logic guy in there hanging out.
Stop by get a free What's on Tap Radio? High five?
Great beer, great times, great food. Located an Alligant, Michigan,
Tantrik Brewing Company.

Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
It's been a fun episode. You missed it earlier in
the show. You know. Octoberfest is over, but the Google
reviews are in and I've been reading the reviews and
I figured out how to do one more, one more,
just because uh, I thought I was worth mentioning four
out of five stars this run wrote and I thought
to myself as reading it, it's like it doesn't really

(01:12:01):
make a lot of sense. But then I thought they're
probably translating it from German maybe to English, and so
maybe that's why it doesn't make that much sense. But
here we go. It says, I thought it would taste better,
but it's good in itself, but it's almost more of
a process like a large canteen. Unfortunately, the taste is
not that good in terms of quality. Also had a

(01:12:22):
hard time finding nice staff. Stupid answers keep coming here again.
This is a review from Google on the twenty twenty
four October Fest. Yeah, stupid answers keep coming here. See.
I think that's what it is. I think they they
are translating it from another language to English, and this
is what it comes up. And maybe AI translated it.

(01:12:44):
But I'm gonna say this.

Speaker 2 (01:12:46):
I'm gonna say this. Okay, you don't want to go
to October Fest. Okay, too many people don't come to Alegan, Michigan.
I don't want to see you here if you're gonna
be that big of a complainer speaking of Aaligan, Michigan.
Last segment here brought to you by our friends Tantrick
Brewing Company, and you can come here drink great beer

(01:13:07):
at Tantrick, and you can wander around in the social district.
And I just check with Harvard light Bill, and I'm
going to put words in his mouth. Yeah, don't go
visit him either. If you're going to complain about Octoberfest,
you're probably not the kind of person that we want
to hang up out. We don't like complainers. So just
I find a way to enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (01:13:26):
I made a note to say this Chad, and I
forgot to mention it. So after I was talking about
the reviews that came out about Octoberfest, we kind of
segued into a story that Chad had about you know, rules,
unofficial rules, and I don't want people to hear that rules. Well,
I don't want to go to all these rules. And
the rules are really in place to make you have
a better experience. Yeah, and they're not really like rules

(01:13:47):
like oh, don't run, don't yell. No, it's not those
kind of rules. Just there are things to make your
experience even better.

Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
Right, do you want your you want to see a
bunch of kids going around with sidewalk chalk marking things?
Oh wait, like guidelines.

Speaker 1 (01:14:02):
Yeah, that's exactly right. Maybe rules isn't the best word
for it, but yeah, just guidelines to just help you
have a better experience. And this goes for the Great
American Beer Festival, which is happening right now or just
wrapped up, but October Fest. Any place you go out,
do some homework, do some studying to make your experience
even better.

Speaker 2 (01:14:20):
Just think etiquette exactly.

Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
There you go like, really that's what it comes down to.

Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
Yes, all right, Well, we are in the last segment
of the show, getting ready to put a bow on it.
And I want to thank our friends at Superior Pest
Control West Michigan for sending this story over to me,
because we recently did a story about the country with
the world's cheapest beer, and to be candid, I'd have
to dig back into our notes and find out. And
I was like, wait, and I remember I said, at

(01:14:47):
one point in time, the world's cheapest beer was in Vietnam,
and there was somebody else who came out and did
a study said, no, the world's cheapest beer is not
in Vietnam. The world's cheapest beer is in another country.
And I don't remember if it was a raq or
wherever it was, but it was pretty cheap in Iraq.

Speaker 1 (01:15:04):
I don't think they can drink beer in right Iraq.

Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
Yeah, I don't know. I don't remember where, Okay, but
it was just it was some some place and it
was something ridiculously cheap.

Speaker 1 (01:15:13):
I don't know if it's usually somewhere in Asia. Asia
always has really cheap beer prices.

Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
But yeah, this one can come up. Well, there was
a man who must have been listening to our show
because he said, I'm gonna go on a road trip.
I'm gonna go back to Vietnam and figure this out
and find out if they really do have the cheapest beer,
because for years we've known that Vietnam has had the
cheapest beer with Bye Hoi, and at one point in time,

(01:15:39):
I think you could buy a It was a pint
a bye Hooy for fourteen cents, which is ridiculously cheap. Well,
the man goes on a mission to go find out
where the world's cheapest beer is and he landed in Vietnam,
and in fact, he ordered a bye Hoy beer, but
not just one, but he ordered are you ready for this?

(01:16:01):
He ordered twelve for the price of one. Because for
just forty pence or the equivalent of basically like five
British pounds. You can order twelve byway Piers. No, that
is the everyday price because they're in Vietnam. They brew

(01:16:25):
beer the same day and turn it over and sell it.
It is same day fresh beer and it is the
cheapest beer in the world. One TikTok user said, it
is literally worth the price of the ticket to fly
to Vietnam for the savings you're gonna have on beer.

(01:16:46):
Can you imagine that? What does it cost to go
to Octoberfest. I'm not complaining about Octoberfest, but you know
during Octoberfest, the price is for hotels, for ubers, for beer,
for chicken dinners, for everything else, all gonna be high.
You're gonna drop You're gonna drop a dime coming just
a little bit. Well, no, you're not gonna drop it.
You're only gonna drop a dime in Vietnam ordering by Hoi. Hey,

(01:17:09):
you're gonna drop thousands of dollars at october Fest trying
to keep up, but you can order. One man said,
you can actually get seventeen by Hoy Beers for the
price of one UK pint, which is amazing. So another
one said, yeah, you could literally have ten of them
and not spend more than five British pounds. This place

(01:17:32):
is mad cheat. The cost of living here is super low.
He's got a hotel costs him ten British pounds a night,
a motorbike he's running for three British pounds a day,
and he's getting hammered on just like five British pounds
because he's able to order ten by Hoy Beers. So

(01:17:53):
if you're still looking for the cheapest beer in the world,
it is still in Vietnam, despite what earlier reports came
out this year. Again our sources were fact checked and
they were supported. But this one guy goes out there
and he's like, I'm gonna give I'm gonna show you
my receipt and you can shove it. So there you go,

(01:18:15):
ladies and gentlemen. If you're thinking where can I go
and drink and save money? And when I think superior
pest control of West Michigan for send us that story.

Speaker 1 (01:18:22):
I wonder if the beer tastes like it costs fourteen cents,
let me let me.

Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
Help you out here. They will. You can go up
to any vendor and they will have it. And they
pour it in a plastic bag.

Speaker 1 (01:18:35):
Yeah, it's one of those you get when you pay
for and it's like, oh, this is bad, but it's cheap.

Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
It's not. It's not a Sam Adams Boston Lagger.

Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
Glass No, nor is it a Boston Logger October Fest
what I'm drying.

Speaker 2 (01:18:45):
By the way, if you wanted to try and set
the record for having like the world's biggest bar tab
and buy hoy, you know how many beers that would be.
I don't even know.

Speaker 1 (01:18:53):
That's funny. All right, real quick, we gotta get out
of here soon. But I was talking about how Merle
Haggard is the news, and you're like, how can Merle
Haggard possibly in the news? He died in twenty sixteen.
Wo how can do you possibly be in the news? Well,
a story just circulated. Did you know? Did you know
that Merle Haggard is in the Guinness World Records. He's

(01:19:14):
in a Guinness Book of World Records. You asked for what?
I didn't know this his record for buying the largest
round of drinks. Yeah. He bought five thousand and ninety
five ccwater backs for the crowd at a Billy Bob's
Honky Tonk in Texas back in nineteen eighty two. Now,
if you don't know what a ccwater back is, it's

(01:19:37):
a shot of Canadian Club whiskey with some water to
chase it down. And he did this in honor of
his twenty eighth hit song ccwater Back. And his tab
was twelve thousand, seven hundred and thirty seven dollars and
fifty seven cents.

Speaker 2 (01:19:51):
If that was beer in Vietnam, that would have cost
him eight dollars and ten cents.

Speaker 1 (01:19:56):
Oh, I said fifty seven. It was twelve thousand, seven
hundred and thirty seven dollars and fifty cents. Excuse me,
and todayste money, that would be around forty thousand dollars.
And his record stood for an impressment thirty four years
until twenty sixteen, when I was broken by a brewery
in England celebrating the Queen's ninetieth birthday. They bought a
round of four hundred and twelve beers, which is over

(01:20:18):
forty two gallons. Merle's round of shots was around forty gallons,
so he got beat outs, which is an impressive run though,
because Merle he's a legend, So there you go. Merle
Haggard once held the world record for buying the largest
round of drinks. I thought that was pretty cool, and
that my friend is. I'm here in the music. I

(01:20:38):
guess we gotta get out of here, Chad Bill, we
got to go now.

Speaker 2 (01:20:41):
Yeah, we'll be back.

Speaker 1 (01:20:42):
We gotta go. Yeah, the music's played.

Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
But before we do, James gets on an airplane and
decides to come here. And I would go to the game.

Speaker 1 (01:20:48):
You never know I could do that. I could do that,
but I hey, Chad, I need you pick me up.
I'm not picking you up. No, I'm at the airport.

Speaker 2 (01:20:56):
Before we do, I will pick you up.

Speaker 1 (01:20:57):
