Speaker 1 (00:00):
The opinions, viewpoints, and promises made during the following program
are not those of wgy it's staff, management, or parent company. iHeartMedia.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
All right, good morning, Hopefully everybody's up and at It
looks like it's going to be an absolutely gorgeous day. We
got some rain. Boy, did we get rain. And of
course it was on the day that we were supposed
to have our golf outing, so we didn't have our
golf outing. We canceled it. And now for those that

(00:42):
missed out because they couldn't be there, it's October sixth
for tunnel to towers in the American Cancer Society. I
feel sorry for Jimmy. Jimmy's Quirkran has done so much work.
Everybody has a z everybody on the team. But we
have rescheduled it, and thank god we did, because when

(01:03):
I say that the rain came down, I'm not just
sure how it was Thursday where you live and reside,
but we got about four inches of rain and the
road on Route nine between Round Lake and Clifton Park
was actually covered with water from an overflow of a stream.

(01:27):
It was just amazing. So hopefully everybody's okay. Nobody got
caught in it, there wasn't any But listen in that
news this morning guy guy goes on the air and
he talks about how he killed his parents. It's just shocking.
You come one in and then we'll do an interview.

(01:49):
You can tell those details how you basically strangled your parents.
This is crazy. The world is nuts. And he's been
I guess he's been taking the money social Security for years.
I don't know how long they've been dead. Buried him
in the yard. This guy supposedly, from what I could read,

(02:12):
saw or heard whatever it was, it was the val
victorian of his class. So something right, something isn't right.
But nothing surprises me at all anymore. I don't know
about you guys, but at my ripe old age of

(02:33):
thirty nine, nothing surprises me at all anymore. So but
for the listeners that are new to the show, this
is the retirement planning show. We focus on pre and
post retirement planning. We have multiple locations. We've got a
new office now down in the Poughkeepsie area, and we

(02:55):
are growing and with growth becomes more response ability. And
you know, bottom mine gets down to is that we're
kind of in the sweet spot right now. There's a
lot of people, folks, I don't have to tell you.
I talk about this all the time. You know, ten
thousand individuals used to turn the age of sixty five.

(03:17):
Now it's eleven thousand, two hundred every day. Twenty and
twenty five is the peak of sixty five, And a
concerning trend is emerging for a good portion of the
sixty five year olds, they do not have pension benefits.

(03:42):
They do not have pension benefits. So we're going to
talk a little bit about that today because the landscape
is changing dramatically. I had this really nice guy that
came in. We had a chat, I think it was yesterday,
former ge guy, who was talking about, you know, his

(04:05):
own personal situation. But for individuals that have pension benefits
in healthcare, you're so much farther ahead of the game
than the average person. And there's all sorts of data
and information coming out about gen xers what they're dealing

(04:27):
with as far as putting their financial house in order,
and they're having a hard time. Folks. If this data
is correct, you know, the mothership goes out and they
do a lot of surveys. But for people that were
born between nineteen sixty five and nineteen eighty. It's typically

(04:48):
called the Gen X generation, but believe it or not,
that generation, of course, just turned sixty. The front end,
those that were born in nineteen sixty five, and there's
sandwich between the boomers, right the older boomers supporting grown children.

(05:10):
And they've also seen the deterioration of employee benefits throughout
their working career. And we're going to talk a little
bit about that because I'm telling you right now, we
have had I can't tell you how many individuals come
into the retirement planning group that are really extremely concerned

(05:32):
about healthcare and how they're going to afford it. And
you know, I talk about my own personal situation because
I think it's important for people. My wife worked at
the shen School District as a teaching aid, and you know,
she did it for almost thirteen years. But when she retired,

(05:54):
she didn't get a benefit for me. So I had
to go out and get a benefit for myself my
daughter who's a junior at FAU Florida Atlanta University, and
we're going through that process right now. I've adding adequate
healthcare for myself. It was my son Christopher for a while,

(06:16):
and my daughter, and as I said, you know, it's
a nineteen hundred dollars a month bill for healthcare between healthcare, dental, vision,
et cetera, to basically keep what I had because I've
had some health issues. You know, my eye had a

(06:36):
detached retina, and I'm going to a specialist and every
six months i have to go in for my evaluation
to see how things are going. So we'll talk a
little bit about what's going on there. But it's really
kind of scary in my opinion because Terry, who was
on recently, you know, Jim got mad at me the

(07:02):
other day because I've been talking about these topic specific
presentations that we're going to do and I haven't had
more clarity with him because we're trying to figure out
when we're going to do him because we got so
much going on, and you know, we're going to have
topic specific presentations, probably not until later part of October
beginning of November, that will go over healthcare and long

(07:26):
term care, both for people that are either thinking about
retirement or going into retirement in the very near future,
where people that are currently in retirement. Because I can
tell you right now there's no doubt in my mind
that it's scrambled eggs for a lot of people, as

(07:49):
far as what options they should be choosing, as far
as how to protect the assets that they've accumulated and
given them choice and independence, and also what they should
do in regard to their own healthcare. And if you

(08:10):
get Barons, which I'm a big believer in Barons because
I love Barons, I think it gives you a lot
of great information. But Baron has an article in there
right now that talks about HSA accounts health savings accounts. Now,

(08:31):
of course Barons is what an investment banking pretty much.
You know, it's a subsidiary, it's a part of Wall
Street Journal. But there is an article in Baron's this
week which I think if you're a reader and you
like to read, it says this. And I've been talking
about this, folks, if you listen to the show, I've

(08:54):
been banging the drum for the people that are in
their forties and fifties, HSA Health Aavings accounts are great
for saving. The trick is getting gen zers on board.
They are the most underused retirement vehicles for young investors. Amen.

(09:18):
Now I understand it's tough, don't have to tell me.
You know, I got kids, you know that are in
their twenties that are battling these unbelievable costs to live today.
So we're going to talk a little bit about what
you're going to need to do, especially if you're a
gen exer. We'll talk a little bit about the markets
when we come back, but I'm Dave Kopek. We've got
a special guest coming in at eight o'clock which I'll discuss.

you can give us a call.

we are back, Dave Kopek. Hopefully you're having a wonderful

(12:07):
morning and this absolutely gorgeous Saturday. I think it's gonna
get eighty today, is it, Celia, It's gonna be eighty today?
Something like that. It's gonna be a beautiful weekend. I think, yeah, yeah,
So get your bead suit out, start run around the yard,
spray one another with the hose. Remember those days. I

(12:31):
remember up in Scatty Cook we had a hose with
They had the hose with the sprayers in it, the
holes in it, you turn it on, you'd run through it. Well,
we we thought we were a schlick mick with that.
We had the thing that you would run and slide on.
Have you guys, have you guys seen the commercial on TV.
I don't know what it's for, but the guy is

(12:53):
coming down You slide down the hill, older guy playing
with his kids, and he doesn't stop. He goes right
through the hedges. It's funny as hell. I don't know
if you've seen that or not. That's cute as hell.
So it kind of reminds me of my days in
Scatty Cook, which is a beautiful, beautiful community. It was

(13:15):
a great place to grow up. Pretty good data coming out, folks,
you know what's going on with these tariffs? Well, over
the last week, economic data has pointed to a US economy.
It seems to be holding up better than expected, folks.
You know what do I talk about the economists that

(13:35):
don't know what the hell they're talking about. Put ten
of them in a room. You're gonna get ten different answers,
and nine out of ten are going to be wrong.
So the first estimate for second quarter GDP growth was
revised guess what higher higher to three point eight percent
versus a forecast to three point three well above what's expected.

(14:01):
So which drives about economic consumption seventy percent of the growth.
So the optic and consumption seems to continue better than expected.
US personal income and spending data released last week for
the month of August, personal income rows forty basis points

(14:25):
point four zero. It's not a huge increase, but it's
better than a decrease. Right. So the data points to
a picture of households and consumers that are continuing to spend,
which is good, right, which is good. So our friends
at the Federal Reserve, you know, they're looking at the

(14:48):
PCE and watching all these numbers closely as they gear
up to make the next I think interest rate cut
in October. October thirtieth is the date. So we'll see
what happens. You know, it's I think we'll get the cut.
My personal feeling, I thought we were going to get
fifty basis points. We only got twenty five. I think

(15:11):
they should have gave us the fifty. But we're going
to talk a little bit about that because I think
right now, if you're in a situation that you're looking
for fixed income, which most retirees are, right, what do
you need? You need coupon, you need yield, you need
cash flow. There's some good opportunities that are still out there,
but you're better get going. Okay. There's another article in

(15:34):
Barn that talks about there's a great opportunity right now
tax free municipal bonds as far as it spreads right now,
and I agree, you can get a well over four
handle in state specific municipals that's exempt from federal and
state income tax. And you know, if you want to

(15:57):
lock him in with individual bonds, I'm not a real
big believer in individual bonds because you can't get the diversification.
I like portfolio managers that manage the asset class and
basically they know when to harvest the gains and reposition
going out on the yield curve as far as getting
the yield that they're looking for in the total return.

(16:19):
But I think tax freeze right now, I'll give you
a really good opportunity. So again, if you're you know,
looking at the risks that are out there right now,
we've gotten better than expected economic data, right to all
those naysayers, all those economists that we're wrong. Recent inflation

(16:41):
data is in line with expectations. Right, they were wrong
about that. And I guess as an investor, you're keep
on asked what are the risks? What are the risks
right now? So I'm going to highlight two that I
think you need to monitor. We've had a pretty good run, folks,

(17:02):
all right, since the April lows. The S and P
five hundred is up over thirty percent without a two
percent or more pullback. Okay, momentum can continue. Right. The
trend is your friend. You ever heard that one? The
trend is your friend to drive equities higher. But we

(17:24):
also know two or three correction years a year at
year's a year are in the norm. So we've been
talking about Harveston's. I mean, some of these portfolios have
just exploded, exploded. Some of these individual stocks have just

(17:46):
had unbelievable gains just this year alone. And as we're
all quite well aware, you know, October has really been
you know, kind of a surprise month. There's been you know,
choppier times in October, so you might be looking to

(18:07):
take some of your gains right, reposition them, build some
dry powder. I'm not a market timer, right, but I
also said, or our client sometimes doesn't hurt to take
some gains and put them on the sidelines. Go get
the boat, Go get the new car, Go take the trip,

(18:27):
Go take the vacation, go on the cruise. Because if
you don't take it right and you don't bank it,
then there's a possibility there could be some volatility. A
five or a ten percent pullback, which is, you know,
not fun, but it's part of the game being in

(18:49):
financial markets. And I don't think we're gonna see who
the hell knows. I can't, I shouldn't say that, because
nobody knows when a black swan event's gonna happen. But
I think if you take the underlying strength of the
economy right now, I don't think, you know, there's my

(19:10):
personal feeling. It's my personal feeling. There shouldn't be a
severe correction out there unless there's you know, Putin pulls
some nonsense, which is a possibility. The guy seems to
be crazier than hell. You know, he has a meeting
with the President of the United States and he gets
more aggressive rather than passive. And of course our friends

(19:34):
down in Washington. Okay, I always leave this for the
last because it's always the fun one for me. It
allows me to chuckle the morons that are down there. Again,
we're talking about a government shutdown. I mean, it's even

(19:54):
hard to even discuss this and comprehend, but they're talking
talking about the possibility of another shutdown. The news and
the data is is that the Democrats want more money
put back into the pot. The current administration is saying, no,
we've made the cuts. We're going to keep the cuts.

(20:16):
You know, we're going to try to get pre pandemic
spending back, not this pie in the sky, you know
where dollar bills are falling into a bucket off your
tree in the backyard. So you know, here's here's the
the news. This will be the headlines for the next

(20:37):
few days Monday and Tuesday. What is the government going
to do? Are they going to shut it down? Will
they furlough workers? Are they going to hold services? Are
you can get your Social Security check? Okay, it's like
I said, you can't. You know, I chuckle about this,
but it's really not even funny. So a US government

(20:59):
shutdown could for short term, you know, slow down, give
a little volatility in the market. Right. Nonetheless, Okay, even
if we get a shutdown, they will turn it back on. Right.
I would expect not a prolonged impact if there is

(21:19):
a government shutdown, maybe for a few hours or a
few days. But you know, this is a political event,
this is posturing. So so overall economy appears to be
on solid footing. We got a resilient consumer. There doesn't

(21:44):
seem to be like I said, a lot of risk
out there that will derail the momentum, right except our
friends in Washington. A government shutdown. So we're up over
thirty and in a very short period of time. I
don't know, if you look at your statements, A lot

(22:04):
of people are happy. A gentleman came in the other
day and he says, I know we're going to get
a correction. I said, yes, sir, you're absolutely right. We
are going to get a correction. I can't tell you when,
but we don't like it, but we will get a correction.
And he's in the camp right now where he says,
you know, maybe I'll take some of my money and
put it on the sidelines and get a little bit

(22:26):
more conservative with my portfolio. He can do it. He
can do it. He's got more than enough guaranteed cash
flow with pension, social Security and other assets. My answer
to him is when he came in, is that you
know what you could? You could basically float your own boat.
You really, what do we bring to the table the

(22:47):
retirement planning group. I mean, you've done well, You've got
a good portfolio, You've been fortunate that you've got a
pension you've got social Security. Your wife has a small pension,
she has social Security. So what can the retirement planning
group do? And basically the answer to that was is
good all the other pieces of the puzzle together because

(23:09):
he is there. He also has other issues as far
as insurance products, insurance policies, long term care concerns. So
a financial team is just not managing money. Yes, managing
your investments or it's extremely important, right, but you need

(23:30):
to identify what I call the holes in the boat.
Where are the holes in the boat. It takes me
about five to ten minutes when I look at somebody's
chet that I can tell you pretty good where your
holes are in your boat and how you can get hurt. So,
as always, we offer a complementary consultation at any of

(23:53):
our offices. We'll soon have a new one in Poughkeepsie.
Julian and I and the Kang are going out to Syracuse.
A lot of our new furniture is being delivered for
our Syracuse office. Syracuse is becoming a very busy location
for us, and we love being out there because I
love the sports out there, love the the Orange and

(24:16):
but if we can help you meet your specific goals,
your specific goals, not ours. Love to have the opportunity
to sit down. Give us a call at my office.
Five eight five eight zero one nine one nine. That's
eighty eight five eight zero one nine one nine toll free.
Eight eight eight five eight zero one nine one nine.

(24:38):
That was quick. Half hour. Will be back and I'll
tell you who our special guest is when we come
back from the news. I'm Dave Callpack. This is the
retirement Planning show.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
God.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
I just had a buddy of mine text me on
my cell phone. He's like shocked by an interview Greg Floyd.
If I was in that studio, I don't know. If
I'm interviewing a guy and he's telling me that I

(25:25):
had a coming burden that I didn't really want to
deal with, so I had to, you know, alleviate, eliminate it,
take care of the problem. I mean, it's not funny,
but I can't imagine I can't imagine Greg Floyd when
this guy's saying it to him that he you know, yeah,

(25:46):
I killed him. I buried him in the backyard. I
don't know if there's like an escape hatch or there's
a red button you hit that basically says, get the
police in here immediately, because this guy is just basically
telling me that he killed his parents and he buried
him in the backyard. It's just I can't believe this.

(26:09):
It's incomprehensible. Wow. You know, I heard about this the
other day and I hadn't listened to it until I
just listened to the news. I was talking to Chatti's
out here, you know, he's putting the news together, and

(26:30):
after listening to it, I'm just like blown away. My
buddy just basically said, you know, is this the future?
You know, you get a car right around, put a
decal on it. I eliminate problems. Ah, you can't make
it up. You cannot make this stuff up. All right.

(26:54):
I gotta get my head in the game here. So
we have a special guest coming on today. And it's
all a little bit fun when we do this because,
as you're all quite well aware, Droiello is in the
mortgage industry, but he was in the investment banking business
for years. But Barry his friend Podeker. I believe that

(27:17):
you pronounced his last name Podeker, not one hundred percent sure.
But the Showcase of Holmes is coming up, and every
year we donate an hour of airtime that we go
over where the houses are, where they're located. We're going
to give away some free tickets for people to participate,
and it's fun. It's fun, and I'm hoping that you

(27:41):
will stick around and participate. They're going to be here
from the eight to nine o'clock hour. We're going to
talk about what's going on. I don't know if you've
ever done it before. My wife and I, I believe
another couple Brian and Kathy mccannon, I think they went
with us. But we did this one year and these houses,
folks are just some of them will blow your eyeballs

(28:04):
out of your head as far as how beautiful.

Speaker 5 (28:06):
They are.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
Absolutely gorgeous homes. So that's coming up and we're going
to talk about it. And we got Barry and we
also have Drew. They'll be in here at eight and
you can participate and we give away some admission tickets
for free, and we also give away a basket a
little bit of wine, some cheese and crackers, so you can,

(28:30):
you know, pull off to the side, maybe do some
apple picking. It's something that I enjoy doing because it's
a way for me to give back to our wonderful listeners,
to people that are listening to me for twenty six
years on radio now, which is hard to believe. So
it'll be fun and we like fun. Fun is good.

(28:51):
But I want to get back to you know, the
markets briefly, you know, make sure you're diversified, make sure
you don't have too high concentration. You mean, some of
these gross stocks have just gone through the roof over
the last three to four years. Some people, you're way
overweighted in your portfolios now with maybe one, two, three

(29:12):
or four positions. Basically they've outsized themselves in your portfolio.
So it's a good time to think about what investments
in your portfolio, whether it's equity or bonds, that you
either want to trim or add to. Trim or add to,
especially if we experience a little bit of a correction here.

(29:34):
So keep in mind, we are long term investors at
the Retirement Planning Group. We are not market timers. But
typically you'll see times where certain sectors, certain asset classes
will underperform. It might be a good time. You know.
I'm a big believer. I love to chase after asset classes,

(29:55):
after them at kicked in the teeth, just w I
invest and it's worked out worth well for me. Not
because you know I'm blowing my horn here, but the
bottom line gets down to it. That's how I think
you get some opportunities, especially if you think that it's

(30:16):
been taking down too much as far as Wall Street.
But as always, call your financial team, make sure your
team is adequately addressing your concerns, diversifying your portfolio and
meeting your specific your specific long term goals and objectives.

(30:40):
You can't get that with an eight hundred telephone number, right.
I was talking about a major portfolio manager the other
day that this gentleman's working with, and I'm saying to
them is what else are they doing? They're not doing anything.
You know, they're managing his money. That's only one peg, right,
It's only one piece of the puzzle. There's so much

(31:00):
more that you have to do in your retirement years
rather than just managing money. You've got all the other
obstacles that you have to face. And the big, of course,
is the one that we're going to be talking about
in greater detail is and I think what we're going
to do, to be honest with you, because it's become
such an important issue. We had a meeting yesterday in

(31:22):
the conference room with everybody, and I think what we're
going to do with the retirement planning group, We're going
to bring in house expertise, in house expertise as far
as healthcare and long term care planning. We're going to
get an individual that has you know, either through our

(31:42):
strategic relationship or in house. Bring somebody in because such
an important aspect of a retirement plan now, long term
care planning, acid protection, and healthcare, healthcare. So we'll talk
more about that over the next few months. I can't
you know. The other thing is is that this is
the last Saturday, I believe it or not, in September.

(32:06):
It's just hard to believe. We're going to be in
the last quarter of two thousand and twenty five. October. First,
it's the middle of next week and we're in October, October, November, December.
Santa Claus. You go into uh one of Lows the
other day and wife said, you know, you need to
go get a light bulber. Who the hell it was,
I'm going to Lows and I'm just I'm saying, I say,

(32:27):
you gotta be kidding me. I mean, it's not even
Halloween yet, and they got all the Christmas decorations of it.
So ho ho is going to be here before you
know it, coming down the chimney. And we're in twenty
and twenty six, folks, we're in twenty and twenty six.
You know. We talk about this all the time, but

(32:49):
it's something that really needs to be addressed by a
lot of people. And the reason why it needs to
be addressed by a lot of people is because the
GENAC generation, those born between nineteen sixty five and nineteen eighty,
are really having a hard time. And the survey that

(33:12):
was just recently done a lot of them have less
than one hundred thousand dollars in savings for the retirement years.
They're being pinched between healthcare, cost of living, kids that
don't want to leave the house, that want to stay
in the basement, and they're trying to figure out how

(33:32):
do they get Most of them right now, about fifty
percent of them don't even expect to retire, and if
they do, it's going to be done much later date
than what they expected. So, as I said, right now,
today eleven two hundred people a day turn AID sixty five.

(33:59):
And when I say that the landscape has rapidly changed.
As far as retirement planning, it's an understatement. It's an understatement.
You know, some people are very, very fortunate. Some people
have been blessed. You know the old famous phrase, It's

(34:21):
amazing how lucky I've become by working hard. You know,
I got a lot of farmers, plumbers, electricians that are
clients of mind. And all they did was work. All
they did was work. It's like going on a restaurant.
Everybody thinks it's glamorous to own a restaurant. Go buy
one and see how glamorous it is. See how much

(34:43):
fun it is working seven days of week, three hundred
and sixty five days a year. But because of hard work,
some of these people have accumulated quite a bit of money.
And it's not uncommon for us to sit down with
individuals and I'll just say to them, you know, your
problem is not income. Your problem is it's going to
let's try to figure out how we're going to manage
this in your lifetime, and maybe maybe if it's important

(35:05):
for you to make life a little bit easier for
your kids, because you're not going to change your behavior
once you start pinching pennies. You always pinch pennies. It's
hard to get away from that. You know. A common
conversation that I have with people over and over again

(35:25):
is they're saying to me, we never expected to be here,
We never expected to have this kind of money. We
never expected that. You know, we're gonna have to worry
about rmds and the impact of required minium distributions. We're
already making one hundred and fifty hundred and eighty thousand
dollars a year. We don't need another twenty or thirty
or fifty thousand dollars coming in. But too bad, too bad,

(35:46):
it's coming. It's called RMD required minimum distribution. You know.
I give out a book to a lot of individuals.
It's called The Retirement Planning time Bomb, which is about
pre tax money. How basically, it's an ed lot. You
should buy it. If you don't buy it, come out
in and have a chat with me. For people that
want to come in and have a conversation, I'll let

(36:07):
you borrow the book. You can read it. But we
are in a changing landscape because in a lot of ways,
there's a lot of people out there that have done
extremely well, and the landscape for them is just green
pastures and you know, bountiful filth filth fields. But for

(36:29):
other people, you know slim pickens. And you're going to
have to figure it out, folks, because I'll tell you
what I'm worried about the gen X generation. I'm worried
about my own generation, the Boomer generation, but the gen
X generation, what I'm starting to see is that there's
trouble in paradise, and the only way you fix it

(36:51):
is to make hard decisions. Motivate, don't procrastinate. Give us
a call eighty eight eight five eight zero one nine
one nine, be right back after this quick message. This

Speaker 4 (38:12):
Born on America's darkest day of nine to eleven, the
Tunnel to Towers Foundation has been helping America's heroes ever since.
People who put their lives on the line for our
country and our communities need your help now more than ever.
Join Tunnel to Towers on its mission to do good
in their honor. Never forget nine to eleven or the
sacrifices of this country's heroes and their families. Show your support.

(38:36):
Donate eleven dollars a month at T two t dot org.
That's t the number two t dot org. You've spent
a lifetime saving for retirement. Now it's time to make
that money work for you. Here's the secret most people
miss you have to create your own retirement income plant.
Social Security is not enough. Tensions are rare. You need
a strategy that turns savings into monthly income that will

(38:58):
last a lifetime. At the Retirement Planning we build customized
income distribution plans so you can retire with confidence, retire smart,
live well.

Speaker 2 (39:06):
Call eight eight eight five eight zero nine for your
complementary consultation. All right, it's good to be back. As

(39:26):
they said, we have our golf outing. Didn't do it
on Thursday because we had a monsoon canceled out. October
sixth is a new date. If you could participate. We've
had some people that had to back out because they're
out of town. Believe it or not, some of the
snowbirds are leaving at the end of the month, right,

(39:49):
the ones that make Florida the permanent residency. They go October, November, December, January, February, March,
maybe some of April, right, and then they came back
up May first. So with I just got to answer

(40:13):
a text message here. If you can participate, it's October sixth.
It's going to be at the Fairways a half Moon.
The proceeds will go to Tunnel to Towers in the
American Cancer Society. If you are a senior and you're

(40:35):
seventy and a half in older and you want to
satisfy some of your arm D and not have it
at taxable event, we can basically do that for you.
You can donate directly to the Tunnel to Towers or
to the American Cancer Society. It would be an honor.
We're trying to raise twenty five thousand dollars. That's our
goal this year. Last year was sixteen. We're pushing it,

(40:57):
pushing hard. You know, some of us have been blessed folks,
and if you have been blessed, sometimes I always say
it's better to give than to receive. So you got
the ability to reach in your pocket, you got some
extra cash on the sidelines. I can't think of two
better causes than Tunnel to Towers and then also the

(41:21):
American Cancer Society. My cousin's grandson will be there. He
battled cancer at age three, lost a lung, lost a rib,
and now Colton's doing phenomenal. He's in first or second
grade now up. But who's the valley in Scotty Coke.
So if you can come, it's a great day. Jim

(41:45):
corkoran in everyone that's involved in it has done a
phenomenal job with prizes and gifts and raffles and all
sorts of stuff. So bottom line gets down to again,
you know, you get a chance to think a little
bit about how blessed you are and you want to
do something special October sixth. If you are a veteran,

(42:09):
you wear the uniform. You know, Tunnel to Towers is
just We had to go through an approval process to
be part of this, and I can't tell you how
impressed I am with this organization. And as you're all
quite well aware if you've been a radio listener for
the last twenty six years, we've had horrific events with
cancer in my family, horrific lost too many people loved

(42:31):
ones from cancer. So this is a good way for
us to give back. As I said of the proceeds,
and I match as much as I possibly can without
breaking my bank. But I will do my best also
to try to match as much as the dollars that
are coming in. So again, if you'd like to participate,

(42:52):
please call Jim at my office eighty to eight five
eat zero nine one nine. You can't make it, but
you want to make a contribution. We've had a lot
of people and thank you, folks, thank you so much.
We've had so many people reach out to us and
talk to Jim that have already given us contributions. God
bless you, God bless you for your caring and love

(43:13):
of your fellow man and woman. And I can't thank
you enough because it means a lot to me. It
really does. As I say over and over again, the
biggest mistake that I made in my life was not
to serve my country. So if I could do something
like this and give back and basically take care of
what I consider to be heroes and both sides of
the fence, the American cans, those people that go through

(43:34):
chemo radiation, especially the kids. You go to the pediatric
care unit, on coology and these hospitals, it's like a
tub bay four hitting it right across the forehead. You know,
we've got nothing to complain about.

Speaker 5 (43:54):
Zero.

Speaker 2 (43:55):
If you're healthy, you can get up in the morning,
you can do your job, you can see, you can
hear five of everything. Five fingers on one hand, five
fingers and the other one. You know, ten toes. Stop complaining,
you know what, get out there and do something special
for people that really need some help and assistance. So

(44:18):
that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. Okay. As
I said, you know, one of the things that concerns
me is what's going on here with the ged X
generation because I'm starting to see warning signs and you know,

(44:39):
they have great concerns about healthcare, they have great concerns
about the retirement wrightiness, they have doubts about Social Security,
and most of them nine out of ten, do not
have pension benefits. So there is an urgent need right

(45:01):
now for a lot of these people to get motivated
and start working with someone, whether it's a retirement planning
group or some other organization, to deal with a lot
of these issues that they're facing. You know, think about
just the last fifteen to twenty years, the difference what

(45:24):
it costs to live today versus it was fifteen twenty
years ago. You know, there is growing fears by a
lot of Americans out there that are approaching retirement and
they're not confident that they can retire, and they're going
to delay it, they might delay it all together. In

(45:47):
the survey, half of retirees report anxiety about being able
to spend money in retirement rich social Security payment right now,
I think ballpark I don't have in front of you.
But it's like eighteen nineteen hundred dollars a month if

(46:11):
you're only if you've only saved one hundred thousand or
two hundred thousand dollars. And he got a healthcare bill
for healthcare of one thy, twelve thirteen, fourteen hundred dollars. Well,
that doesn't leave a lot.

Speaker 5 (46:24):
In the pot. Then.

Speaker 2 (46:30):
The survey also shows a growing shift in financial advice,
with guess what annuities emerging as the most recommended investment
for financial security. Isn't that amazing? You know, there's a
screaming monkey's tell you how horrible they are and how
disgusting they are and why somebody should never do it

(46:53):
because the financial advisor is just getting a big fat commission.
It's all.

Speaker 5 (47:00):
Bs.

Speaker 2 (47:00):
It's not what I want to say, but that's how
I'll do it politely. They have an agenda, right, Their
agenda is to charge you a fee for the rest
of your life, right, because they're so great, they're so
spectacular at managing money until all hell breaks loose and
there's a market sell off and you're sitting there in
the corner or your bedroom trying to figure out, Wow,
what am I gonna do now? We over emphasize the

(47:24):
people baseline income because after doing this for forty three
years now, I know that a certain part of your
portfolio and retirement needs to basically be guaranteed. I don't
care how I get it. I don't care what it is.
I don't I don't care if you call it an annuity,
a pension benefit, a ladder bond portfolio. You know, you

(47:44):
select the one, but you need to put something in
your portfolio that when all hell breaks loose, you're not
going to freak out and try to figure out I'm
gonna sell. No, No, I'm gonna sell. I'm not gonna
sell now, I'm gonna sell them, sell and then you
sell them in the markt who goes up thirty forty percent?

(48:06):
So there's uncertainty. There's a lot of consumers out there
that need professional assistance, right, professional advice assistants. They need
to sit down with somebody that has basically weathered the
storm that is gone through good markets and bad markets, right,
and whether it's the retirement planning group or someone else,

(48:29):
seek out advice So whether it's Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwap, they
all say the same thing. Folks, working with a financial
advisor will help you. Working with a financial advisor will
help you eleven thousand remember that number. Eleven two hundred

(48:51):
people every day turn the age of sixty five is
not too far behind, and they're trying to figure out,
how am I gonna last through this? And you're gonna
have to have some behavioral adjustments right towards your retirement,

(49:12):
and you're gonna have to have some planning strategies, and
you're gonna have to sit down and build out a
plan that not only protects yourself but protects your spouse.
That's one of the things that we always overemphasize for
people unless they're bozos. You know, if we get the
person in there, whether it's the male or female, they'll

(49:34):
be all right, don't worry about it. She's got enough money,
he's fine, he doesn't need any money. That's usually a
real quick conversation for me. All right, there's not a
lot I can do for you, see you later. I
wish you luck. So there's a lot of people out

(49:55):
there right now that are looking for assistance. They're concerned
if that is your case, we don't care at the
Retirement Planning Group whether you have five dollars or five
million dollars. Our door is always open to help you
and assist you with what you're trying to achieve for
your retirement. Okay, so give us a call. We've got

(50:18):
multiple locations now in New York, Syracuse, soon to be Sagate's, Albany, Malta,
Glen's Falls, Albany on State Street, and then of course
Glenn's Falls. So if we can be of assistance, please
reach out to us. It's eight eighty eight five eight

(50:40):
zero one nine nine eight eight eight five eight zero
one nine nine. And again if you can help us
and assist us with our golf outing, it's a great day.
We need a couple more foursomes. A couple of teams
fell out because they can't come because of the different date.
Now Jim will fit you in. And also if you

(51:04):
want to make a contribution, we appreciate it. I can't
tell you how much we appreciate it. You can just
call us at eighty to eight five eight zero one
nine one nine and say Jim, I heard Dave on
the radio. You know I don't need all of this
rm D. You know what, I want to make a
contribution to tunelto towers. I want to make a contribution
to the American Cancer Society. And guess what if you're

(51:27):
over seventy and a half, it's a non taxable event,
so you can make the contribution. Satisfy your arm D
doesn't have to be all of it. He partial ten,
twenty thirty, forty fifty percent of the ARM and D
and you're gonna make a lot of people happy. God bless.
We're gonna be here with Barry and Drew for our

(51:50):
next segment. We're gonna be talking about the showcase of homes.
It's always a good fun hour stick around. I'm Dave Kopek,
and this is the Retirement Plan show.

Speaker 1 (52:09):
The opinion's viewpoints and promises made during the following program
are not those of w g Y It's staff management
or parent company. iHeartMedia.

Speaker 2 (52:22):
All right, we are back. This will be a fun hour.
We've done this now. I don't know how many years?
How many years have we done this?

Speaker 5 (52:29):
True?

Speaker 2 (52:31):
How many years? How man years have we done this?

Speaker 3 (52:33):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (52:34):
Who's just thinking? Probably probably at least ten years, so
maybe more, at least ten did you have did you
have Barry? Never gets old? Did you have Barry when
you had your show here? I think so, yes, we did?
We did, right, Yeah we did, Yeah, we did. About
ten years with you was probably about.

Speaker 6 (52:51):
Right because I stopped doing my show like a Droyal
on Why don't you to introduce Barry and everybody knows
you because you're you're here like White on Rice.

Speaker 5 (53:01):
I like that.

Speaker 6 (53:03):
Well, all Droyl with Fairway Independent Mortgage, and today we
have Barry Potterker.

Speaker 2 (53:10):
That's why, that's why the executive what did I say, now?

Speaker 5 (53:14):
Executive vice president, executive chairman, and I don't work for
a bank, okay, because banks have lots of vice presidents. Okay, listen,
I'm just the executive director and co chair of the showcase.

Speaker 2 (53:26):
Can I ask you a question before we get into this, Verrier,
because you've been you've lived in Saratoga your whole life.
I have what's the ceiling up there? What's the wet ceiling?
I mean?

Speaker 5 (53:35):
The price is the real estate up there? Just unbelievable,
you know, I don't know, David. It's just crazy houses,
you know, old you know, fifty sixties ranches selling for
a million, dollars all about it, and then you know what,
they knock them down and build a new house on Fifth.

Speaker 2 (53:55):
My cousin, her mom and dad had a house of
fifth that for years. Then they got real smart. They
wanted to downsize right which the kids hated because they
didn't want to get rid of the house. That house
is now probably two three million dollar house right on Fifth.

Speaker 6 (54:12):
That those houses million five million, six. They tear them down.

Speaker 2 (54:16):
What's the name the Portnoy? Yeah, yeah, he just he
tore his down and put a brand new.

Speaker 5 (54:22):
One up, didn't Yeah, absolutely, And there's probably and there's
another one is I think there's two more going up
there that have been knocked down. So so the.

Speaker 2 (54:30):
Reason why I say that is that, you know, we
moved out of Saratoga to go to Malta because it
was just easier for parking, because parking was just a
painted that we were in in the building that we
were in. And we ended up going to Malta. But
we still go there a lot for lunch social and
I'm just flabbergasted by what's going on as far as
the construction and the price. I mean, the prices are

(54:53):
what they just sold one for three point seven million
on Church, I know, and Church it's such a bubble.

Speaker 5 (54:59):
And and we have we have a couple of houses,
you know, for the showcase that are in the truly
high end range. I mean with construction. Is is it
doing a project right near the track. Have you been
to the track? You know, Nelson Avenue, you know exactly
where it is. So he's got that house in the
he's doing a multiple. He's doing like two or three houses.

(55:22):
There's going to be more than that. There's there's multiple.
I don't know what the number is.

Speaker 2 (55:28):
But well, I the thing is is that I've said
this the last time you were on last year, and
like I've said the Drune to a lot of other people,
Saratoga's becoming a have and have not. You got to
have some serious dollars to live in Saratogaina. Oh yeah, right,
oh yeah, yeah, So look at it.

Speaker 6 (55:45):
Look at the Delphi condos where they fifteen hundred square foot, that's.

Speaker 5 (55:50):
Thirty three hundred. Well one of those is in the
showcase as well.

Speaker 2 (55:53):
Oh it is, Oh yeah, Delphi. All right, so get
into it, Drew. Why don't you give a little highlight,
highlight what you guys do. And yeah, today you're involved
in it because you know, I know that you want
to do some mortgages.

Speaker 6 (56:05):
Yeah, well today we're not really talking business today. We're
today we're going to talk about this charity event that
we do every year. It's been what almost thirty years.

Speaker 5 (56:13):
Barry, yep, this is our twenty ninth year.

Speaker 6 (56:15):
Yeah, twenty nine years doing the showcase of homes. It's
a lot of the top builders building homes or anything
north of the Twin Bridges. Can you still say twin bridges?
Everybody think what that means? I think years ago, Oh
that's pretty good. I could never pronounce that. So it's
this year we have twelve homes, which is good because

(56:36):
that's COVID. It's been on the light side that's up
and now it's coming back. Before COVID, we went eighteen nineteen,
then we went down the single digits. This year we're
back to fairly normal now, twelve homes all throughout Saratoga County.
There's one apartment, but it's next to a condo that's
being sold, so we let that builder come into the showcase.
Of course, because all the money goes to charity. There's

(56:57):
two charities we build thing Saratoga together Habitat for Humanity.
So we've exceeded a million dollars over the last twenty
nine years.

Speaker 5 (57:07):
One point six million. There you go. So so Barry,
who's counting.

Speaker 2 (57:11):
Executive director for Are you since the beginning?

Speaker 5 (57:16):
Yes? No, no, no, no, I've I've been doing this
for about sixteen years or so. Okay, this started a long,
longer way before me.

Speaker 2 (57:27):
So I can't imagine what it was before you.

Speaker 5 (57:30):
It was, it was, it was in its surly stages.

Speaker 2 (57:34):
Was it always titled a showcase of homes?

Speaker 5 (57:38):
Yes, yes, so it was always a Saratoga showcase of homes,
homes only in Saratoga. We have varied from that over
the course of George's right. Yeah, well last time I
did it, you guys had one and half Moon, which
is a Saratoga county. It's Saratoga's county, and we have
some this year and I think half Moon. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (57:56):
There there.

Speaker 5 (57:57):
It's a pretty diverse group. If you go on the website,
French will get uh Chris Chriss ab Belmonte. I think
they're half known, right, yeah, yeah, yeah, they're down near
Clifton Park. My buddy Chris, the graft Bloom is down
that way. Heritage is down that way. So we've got
a we've got a pretty diverse group good buildings of

(58:18):
homes to see this year.

Speaker 6 (58:19):
So there's a couple I haven't heard of. Uh, you're
of alec Burate Builders. Never heard of them, Green Springs Holdings,
never heard of them. But all the rest are the
are the names we're used to Belmonte with Kodiak heritage,
the graft bloom.

Speaker 5 (58:33):
Be Abley, beechwood. Yeah, Kodiak.

Speaker 2 (58:40):
So when does this happen? Okay, what is it? When
does it take place?

Speaker 5 (58:46):
Uh? It opens next weekend.

Speaker 2 (58:47):
Because you got two minutes and you're done.

Speaker 5 (58:50):
That's it. Next two weeks it opens next weekend October
fourth and fifth, and then it runs the second The
second weekend is October eleventh. Than twelve homes are open
from ten to four. As Drew mentioned, we have twelve locations.
Please go to Saratoga Showcase of Homes dot com. You
can learn all about all of the homes. You can

(59:12):
buy tickets there. And are these homes bury for sale
or some of them there are? Most of them are
already sold. The days of spec home can you imagine
pretty much over.

Speaker 6 (59:25):
I could imagine four thousand people going from my house.
But people do it well.

Speaker 2 (59:29):
What they do is they I think that you know,
I've done it once and I was very impressed that
when you get to the house, you take your shoes
off and they give you those little pads.

Speaker 5 (59:39):
That you put no no, no no, you get a
free shoe bag.

Speaker 2 (59:42):
Now, which I think is you know, they do it
the right way, and you know, I think most people
that are going through are going to be responsible.

Speaker 5 (59:51):
We run a first class events. It's really well organized.
We have a committee that has been working since February
to put this to together. We want to thank all
of our sponsors, especially Dreuiello here who Fairway Mortgage has
been a sponsor for god probably twenty years years. Yeah,

(01:00:15):
and we are looking forward to it. Things are in
order and the next two weekends we have the realtor
tour on Tuesday and we have the judges tour the
homes are Judge which is this Monday, and then opening weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
Who judges.

Speaker 5 (01:00:34):
We have judges who are experts in their fields interior design, architecture, builders, landscapers.
We have I think ten judges, ten or twelve judges.

Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
Kind of give like seventeen fifteen or seventeen bags.

Speaker 5 (01:00:53):
Judges tour right, and they go around on Monday. It's
a long day from eight to four point thirty and
judge all the homes in all these different categories and
uh and we have an awards celebration giving out the
awards on October eighth.

Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
Vapor at Vapor you can just do a dinner right.

Speaker 5 (01:01:13):
Get down, yeah, yeah yeah, get down, very very down.

Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
He gets crazy, he's got you know, you got tear.
Awaite have invited me to that last few years least.
I'm in Boston with Fidelity sixth, seventh and eighth, right
after the golf outing. I have to be in Boston.

Speaker 5 (01:01:29):
I can on.

Speaker 2 (01:01:31):
A limo to Boston.

Speaker 5 (01:01:32):
How about if you send us a video?

Speaker 2 (01:01:34):
I send all right. We got to take a hard
break and when we come back, we're going to open
it up to the lines. We've got some questions. You
can get some free tickets fresh yeah, mission.

Speaker 5 (01:01:44):
We're here with burying free free free, free, free, we
love free freeze good.

Speaker 2 (01:01:48):

All Right, we are back, all right, Drew Ielo here
with Barry Potterker. We are talking about the Saratoga Showcase
of Homes twenty twenty five showcase that starts next weekend
October fourth and fifth, and then it goes a falling weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:04:18):
But it's not Columbus Day. It's just Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 5 (01:04:23):
Yeah. We didn't, Yeah, we did that one year right,
it was okay, but you know, we didn't even think
about doing that this year because it used to be
buildings weekends. Yeah, that's a lot way back through the
three days the builders just ye, we have two weekends.

(01:04:43):
It works out, and the two charities man it so
that it's uh, yeah, they have a couple hundred volunteers
as greeters and people taking money at the door, and
you know, kudos to them for putting that all together
and coordinating that.

Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Got Liz Bishop back for them.

Speaker 5 (01:05:02):
Liz, even though she is now retired, but she is
still our face of yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:05:09):
Uh. And someone told me Greg Floyd's retiring too, is
can you believe that interview?

Speaker 5 (01:05:16):
You were just talking about that in the air earlier.

Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
I heard you. Imagine sitting there, you're doing an interview
with the guy.

Speaker 5 (01:05:23):
I would have got up and said, hey, like you said,
bring the police in.

Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
Where's the button you know where you know, where's the
button that you know you can hit on alarm?

Speaker 4 (01:05:34):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
I just killed my parents and I buried him in
the backyard. Okay, all right, let's move on to murder.
Let's uh did you hear this story I heard about him?
I didn't.

Speaker 5 (01:05:45):
Yeah, let's let's go go down the list of the
builders this year, so we have ably Homes, Beechwood Homes,
which is the residence that at the Adelphi. We have
Bella Home Builders, Belmonte Builders has two houses in this year.
We have the graf Loom Custom Builders, Green Springs Companies
which also has two houses, Heritage Custom Builders, Kodiak Construction,

(01:06:10):
Ervlak Builders, and Wit Constructions. So there are ten builders,
twelve locations. Everything you need to know about the showcase
is on Saratoga Showcase of Homes dot com. You can
buy tickets there. You can also buy tickets at various
other locations around Saratoga and surrounding areas that are on

(01:06:32):
Deck Trust kurt Slumber. What's the price twenty five bucks
per ticket? That's been like that forever. Well, it was
twenty for a while, and our twenty fifth anniversary we
raised it twenty five. But you get to see all
these beautiful homes, spend a nice fall day driving around.

Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
It's a great deck. Yeah, it really is.

Speaker 5 (01:06:52):
And you know, you know, you can get tickets at
all sorts of locations, like I said, Ruin Realty, Curtis Lumber,
Arrow Bank, at Arondick Trust, at the two charities, or
online or as always as the tradition, you can buy
tickets right at the door of any one of these homes.

Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
Let's have let's have a question. Sure, so, because we're
gonna have a limited amount of time, so we can
just give some of these tickets away. I'm gonna give
out the telephone number. Somebody knows what it is. It's
one eight hundred talk w g YE talk WGY. We're
gonna give away some free admission tickets. You're gonna have
to answer a question, pretty basic question, and the first

(01:07:30):
one is what Barry.

Speaker 5 (01:07:32):
The first question is what year is the showcase? What?
How many What year is this is the showcase celebrating?
How many years has it been going on? What is
this year? So if you can get on there, it's
a pretty easy quart to get on the website. So
I've already given the answers. Crying out anyway, So let's talk.

(01:07:53):
We gonna we get the phones going here. People come
on people two tickets free, that's a fifty dollar value,
plus you get a free bag. Two bags anyway.

Speaker 6 (01:08:04):
So and also, which I don't think a lot of
the public knows, if you go to all the houses,
what is the benefit of seeing all the houses.

Speaker 5 (01:08:12):
Well, if you see a certain amount of houses and
you get them checked off at the doors, you are
entered into drawings for lots of other gift cards and
prizes and baskets and all kinds of cool stuff.

Speaker 6 (01:08:23):
So a lot of people don't know that, but I
just gave Barry half a dozen gift cards to some
local businesses so that when the auction off to take.

Speaker 5 (01:08:32):
Yeah, we have so many sponsors that have stepped up
with gift cards and all kinds of cool stuff. So
what's that number again?

Speaker 2 (01:08:39):
Dave one eight talk WGI for free t tickets. Do
you get into the showcase of homes and the phone
lines are just the ringing off? You better come up
with question number two pretty quick?

Speaker 5 (01:08:53):
Okay. Second, the second question is how many locations are
there in the showcase this year?

Speaker 2 (01:08:58):
We're going to Charals and Rotterdam. Charles, you got the answer,
Charles in charge, Charles and roder Dym Are you there.

Speaker 5 (01:09:09):
Hey, Charles? Okay, that would be a hangoup.

Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Charles are Charles is going? So let's go to Fred,
not Fred. Hello, We're not going to talk about munich Y.
Hey Fred, this is Dave kopekright, we're we're doing the
call in now for Showcase of Homes. I see that
you want to talk about municipal bonds.

Speaker 7 (01:09:37):
No, I didn't. I was trying to win the tickets
for the showcase.

Speaker 5 (01:09:40):
Okay, all right, good, so here we go.

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Good, all right?

Speaker 5 (01:09:45):
How many what is?

Speaker 2 (01:09:46):
What year?

Speaker 5 (01:09:46):
Are we celebrating this year for a showcase of homes?

Speaker 7 (01:09:51):
Twenty five years?

Speaker 5 (01:09:52):
That would be wrong? You're wrong?

Speaker 2 (01:09:55):
Oh oh am, I yeah, you're wrong. So later, Fred, Sorry, Fred,
doing to try it again?

Speaker 5 (01:10:03):
All right?

Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
All right, yeah again, one eight hundred talk WGY. That's
one eight hundred talk WGY. We're celebrating how many years
of the Showcase of Homes for free? Two tickets you
get in the door. It's a fifty dollars value. Also
and the bag.

Speaker 5 (01:10:24):
Yeah, and also if you could tell me or tell
us how many locations there are on the Showcase of
Homes tour this year.

Speaker 2 (01:10:34):

the web, you're gonna get all these answers.

a lot of appliances and a lot of the home.

Speaker 5 (01:11:13):

sponsor obviously, and they have ten of the homes have
used their appliances. How cool is that?

Speaker 2 (01:11:24):

Homes dot com. If you need some answers, who are
the two charities that are involved in getting the proceeds

You got it? Thanks? All right?

Speaker 5 (01:14:38):
A lot of houses in Malta.

Speaker 2 (01:14:40):
Making these questions too hard?

Speaker 5 (01:14:43):
All right? Give you the question is who are the
two charities that proceeds?

Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
Are you live? Is he on the on the mic?
I'm not hearing them, I hear yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:15:05):
But let's see how many builders are there in this year?

Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
That's a tough many builders?

Speaker 5 (01:15:16):
How many builders?

Speaker 6 (01:15:18):
I think we mentioned there's a couple of builders have
more than one house.

Speaker 2 (01:15:22):
Let's go to I need some names here. Just pick
up the line wherever it is you're on the air.
Who's this Arnie Ernie, Arnie Palmer? Ernie Palmer? Back there
you go. Okay, what's the question that we got for
this joint.

Speaker 5 (01:15:44):
Event?

Speaker 2 (01:15:49):
You know, the two charities?

Speaker 5 (01:15:53):
I thought it was the first question I got what
I called was a Saratoga showcase of homes?

Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
Right, that's the answer, that's correct? Alright, right, good, that
was the hardest one. Yet we got another winner. All right.

Speaker 6 (01:16:08):
Our listeners are redeeming themselves, Dave. Right, we got we
got to take a hard break here, but we don't
hang up. N don't hang up, Arnie.

Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
She's going to get your name and your telephone numbers
so we can get back to you so we can
get the tickets to you. Okay, okay, okay, so hold on.

the showcase of poems. Right, we are back, all right,

(01:17:21):

here doing aerobics. And you don't want to see that
number one. I don't know who's on the line, but
we're gonna find out who's on line number one. Here.
Identify yourself. Hello, Hello, yes.

Speaker 7 (01:17:37):

most of the questions. I do have a thought this
was gonna be simple, guys, now, come on, I do.

Speaker 5 (01:18:16):
I do want to throw out two other things. The
Showcase of Home starts next weekend October fourth and fifth,
and eleventh and twelfth. So the question is what dates
does the showcase run from? And secondly, what time are
the homes open from. They're open from ten to four

(01:18:37):
each day. So if you have the answers to those answers,
please call in. Thank you the answers to those answers. Anyway,
I like to throw even a third one, I like
the one that you just had.

Speaker 6 (01:18:50):
What's the over under in terms of money that we
have raised over the last twenty nine years above a
million or under a million for the two charity.

Speaker 2 (01:19:00):
To talk wgy. If you want some tickets for admission
to the Showcase of Homes. When I tell you it's
a great day, it's a great day. Uh talk wg
weg WGY. I can't.

Speaker 5 (01:19:13):
All the answers can be found on Saratoga Showcase of
Homes dot com plus you can order tickets there. We
have twelve locations this year and the Showcase of Homes
kicks off next weekend and as all the tickets are
available at any showcase home that you visit.

Speaker 2 (01:19:35):
How many people typically participate in.

Speaker 5 (01:19:37):
This We we get everywhere between thirty five hundred and
four thousand people. It's good coming through the homes this year.
We might because we have twelve homes.

Speaker 2 (01:19:46):
Yeah, unless you all right, it's very, very very active.
Let's see if Scott and Galway has got the magical Hello,
I'll worry Scott.

Speaker 5 (01:19:59):
Good.

Speaker 2 (01:19:59):
Thanks, you're on the air.

Speaker 7 (01:20:01):
I want to answer the question the hours of the showcase.

Speaker 5 (01:20:04):
Yes, sir, yes, Scott, well done. We got another winner.
Hold on there. Everybody's a winner today, everybody's a winner.
We're sending out showcase tickets like crazy.

Speaker 2 (01:20:19):
Yeah, Scott, God bless, we're gonna put you on hole.
You're gonna put you on a hole and find out
how we can get the tickets to you. We'll COUI
after the show. Okay, okay and again okay, So we
answered that question ten to four. Uh, we've got another
caller here. What's the question we got right now for

(01:20:39):
the next caller. What's the question?

Speaker 5 (01:20:41):
When is the showcase running from? Who's on the line,
What dates or what money you got to two?

Speaker 2 (01:20:47):
What dates? What dates are the showcase of homes running?
And I'll give you. We need the dates.

Speaker 5 (01:20:54):
So let's go to Sal and cohos Hi, Sal, Hey
Shell over here? You there know what they're doing? Ad
Sal you PAULI? Yeah, Sells. There's a little bit of

(01:21:15):
a delight.

Speaker 2 (01:21:16):
I think the girls are pulling them up there. He's
on a cell phone. Are you there? Sol? I am
hey Sall?

Speaker 5 (01:21:24):
How you doing?

Speaker 7 (01:21:26):
How you doing? Good morning?

Speaker 5 (01:21:28):
All right, good morning?

Speaker 2 (01:21:29):
Do you have the answer? Sell?

Speaker 7 (01:21:32):
Yes? October fourth and fifth and seventh and eleven.

Speaker 2 (01:21:36):
Try again, October fourth and fifth.

Speaker 7 (01:21:41):
Seventh and eleven.

Speaker 5 (01:21:44):
Eleven.

Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
We like you playing crap? What comes after a line?

Speaker 5 (01:21:48):
Here?

Speaker 2 (01:21:49):
What comes after eleven?

Speaker 7 (01:21:50):
Cell twelve?

Speaker 2 (01:21:55):
All right, stay out alive and get your name and
your cell phone number, and we'll quoi you how we
can get the tickets to you. All right, We're going
to take a break here for a minute. We'll have
a little bit more discussion, then we'll open it up again.
So if you can get Sal that we can get
his name and telephone number. And I'm working up a

(01:22:16):
sweat over this.

Speaker 5 (01:22:17):
I know I'm going to take off my hat.

Speaker 2 (01:22:21):
Are we still on. Yeah, okay, sorry, we're taking a break. No,
we're going to take a break at the forty five
hard break break. Okay, seven more minutes.

Speaker 5 (01:22:30):
All right, please everybody, all right show.

Speaker 2 (01:22:34):
Have you raised more than a million or less than
a Well.

Speaker 5 (01:22:36):
We've raised more than a million, and we've raised over
one point six million dollars over the past twenty eight
years for these two charities. So please get out, buy
your tickets. More than Dave makes it a week, just
a little bit. Just get out and see these beautiful homes. Now,
we really haven't talked about the specifics on the homes,

(01:22:59):
but if you go to the website at Sarah tooka
Showcase of homes dot com, you could find out directions,
find out information on each one of the builders, each
one of the homes where it went mapped out.

Speaker 6 (01:23:12):
I don't want to interrupt you, but but the way
that we've done the maps, they're interactive, so you could
start at any house and still find your way around.

Speaker 5 (01:23:21):
Exactly, and the map is right on your Google thing there,
you know how, it just goes right up and it's awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:23:29):
You off the house to house.

Speaker 5 (01:23:32):
There's a QR code that you can just drop into
your phone or take a photo of it.

Speaker 2 (01:23:38):
How that works.

Speaker 5 (01:23:41):
You can get to all the houses again, ably homes
Beechwood Homes, which is the residence at Adelphi, Bella Home Builders,
Belmonte Builders has two homes, the graft Bloom Custom Builders,
Green Springs Companies has two homes, Heritage Custom Builders, Kodiak Construction,
Irvlact Builders, and with Wit Construction.

Speaker 2 (01:24:03):
Can I ask you a question that's a that's specific
to your industry because I hear it from good friends
of mine that you know that are contractors. They're very
concerned Barry about what's going on in New York State
come January first with the natural gas and energy. Yet,
so are you do you think they're going to stop

(01:24:23):
that or you think it will continue down the path,
because you know a lot of Bob Mariny has basically
said he's done building houses, that he's he's going to
uh Tennessee, Nxville, Tennessee. Uh.

Speaker 5 (01:24:36):
I don't necessarily have a feel for it or an
opinion on it, but I know that the builders are
not happy about that particular. Now I don't know whether
it's actually been is going to go into law. I
think January doesn't have to generally approved still or.

Speaker 2 (01:24:59):
No, I think it's I think it's it's it's chisel
and stone.

Speaker 5 (01:25:02):
I though it is.

Speaker 2 (01:25:03):
And a lot of these guys that get the infrastructure,
they did all the infrastructure for natural gas, and they
basically all that money that they've spent.

Speaker 5 (01:25:09):
Yeah, well it's going to increase obviously increase the cost
of putting together a home and all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 6 (01:25:15):
So get it, because aren't they running a big natural
gas pipe from Canada all the way down New York
State coast?

Speaker 5 (01:25:21):
I don't know, run right through Saratoga.

Speaker 2 (01:25:23):
All I know, I've seen there's articles in the all
many business review that talk about it. You get a chance,
you know, review it. But there's I know that there's
great concern that.

Speaker 5 (01:25:33):
It's clearly it's very concerning to all the builders, and
I know builders are trying to figure out what what
their next steps are going to be.

Speaker 6 (01:25:39):
We have to try to figure out how to eliminate costs,
not create cost everything's expensive as it is.

Speaker 2 (01:25:45):
All Right, we're gonna give out some more tickets. We're
gonna have to take a hard break here in a
couple of minutes, but we're going to pull out of
our hat. A couple of more questions, and Drew, you
seem to be the guy with the brain that's just
really really working today with these outstanding question Really good Barry,
What what county?

Speaker 5 (01:26:04):
Oops?

Speaker 6 (01:26:05):
What county is the showcase of homes? Homes in? How
about that?

Speaker 2 (01:26:10):
There you go? What county is the showcase of homes in?
And it's north of Albany and it's south of Lake George.
How's that? Sing?

Speaker 6 (01:26:19):
I'm looking at this ticket says the twenty twenty five
Showcase of Homes the Saratoga Builders Association. So what county
are these homes in?

Speaker 5 (01:26:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:26:28):
And you're gonna get yourself two free tickets and a
shoe bag. You're a shoe bag to the showcase of
homes and Barry w g y. That's one.

Speaker 5 (01:26:38):
Dinner with Drew and I I'm gonna tell you because
I would advise you not to do that. Okay, Barry
will be at these houses and make sure you're manicured. Okay,
you're gonna be walking through these houses barefoot. You put
on a little we're not doing booties this year, all right, Well,
we're trying to get away from that. These are all
brand new wood floors for the for the most part,

(01:27:00):
and we do not want shoes, So that's the point
of the bags. You take your shoes off, wear comfortable shoes,
take them off at the door, put them in your bag,
walk through the home with either socks on or bare
feet either way, and then put them back on after
you go through the home. The home, these brand new,

(01:27:22):
shiny floors get scratched up with thirty five hundred people
going through them, so we want to try and avoid that.
The builders would like to keep these homes as pristine
as possible. So take your shoes off.

Speaker 2 (01:27:36):
So we need to know the county. We've got people
calling in the county for the showcase of homes. Talk WGY.
Let's think of another one because we have money.

Speaker 5 (01:27:47):
We have There is a ticket sponsor, and you'll see
on the ticket there is a company that sponsors the ticket.
That company is fair Way Independent Mortgage, all right, So
if you can name who the ticket sponsor is, you
get two free tickets. I just happened to be the
branch manager of that coin. And when we come back
from after the break, I'm gonna talk about it.

Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
We're gonna go real quick, right now, Go ahead, deal
you bring one of those callers up. I don't. I
don't need to know the name. They can just identify themselves. No,
it was lit up anymore?

Speaker 5 (01:28:22):
Hello there, Okay, okay, We're going to talk about two
other events when when we come back from our break
that are going on during the showcase at two of
the other builder locations. So remind me, drewe to talk
about that.

Speaker 6 (01:28:35):
And also we have some vehicles at some of the showcase.
We have vehicle sponsors. Romeo Auto has.

Speaker 5 (01:28:43):
Is our car sponsor, and they're going to have cars
at three of the locations. So any boats, no boats,
no boats to share, No boats. I like that. No boats.
I like boats.

Speaker 2 (01:28:54):
I like the boats. Boats are amazing. I went a
bass pro shop. Boats are good, so good. All right,

(01:31:31):
So you Frank?

Speaker 5 (01:31:33):
Yes, it is, Hey, Drew, how are you so?

Speaker 7 (01:31:38):
You asked? It's fair Way Independent Mortgage with Ruilo and
Melody Loftus.

Speaker 5 (01:31:46):
Yes, yes, wow over here, Hell yeah, you form New
York over here.

Speaker 6 (01:31:50):
It is fire Department. It's me Drew f Dny God Blessome, Yes,
bless Frank got out of the city and move.

Speaker 7 (01:32:00):
Up North Ean, why broke?

Speaker 2 (01:32:02):
You're going to have to come to our outing on
the six for tunnel to Towers, Frank.

Speaker 7 (01:32:09):
Yes, I donate to Tunnel to Towers and I even
worked with Steven Sola.

Speaker 2 (01:32:14):
Well, i'll tell you what might fire house for a year.
There's a bunch of them that are going to be
up here on October sixth, So if you can participate,
we'd love to have you come. Okay, Okay, Dave, Okay, listen,
the girls are going to get your name and your
telephone number and we'll call you back with your address.
We're not going to do that over the line. Okay,

(01:32:34):
all right, thank you, you bet, thank you for your
service to all Right, that's it.

Speaker 5 (01:32:40):
Okay. So I want to talk about two things that
are going on during the showcase. At House number five,
which is the Wit Construction house on Nelson Avenue, there
will be a student middle school student build on October Saturday,
October fourth, from ten to one. He did that shed, Yeah, Well,

(01:33:02):
they're not doing sheds this year. They're doing wooden planner
boxes and it's run by the Northeast Construction Coalition and
Whipback Construction, and they are got a bunch of kids
that are going to be putting together and building. No
that's not part of PO season, but they're gonna be

(01:33:25):
putting together these planners and then selling. There was a
school district, yeah, a couple of years ago, and it's
going to be a great exhibition, you know, focusing on
the trades and getting people to take a look at
going into the trade.

Speaker 6 (01:33:40):
I think our movement we started probably six seven years
ago with the trades, I think it's starting to take effect.

Speaker 5 (01:33:47):
It has the awareness of getting into the trades and
the learning curve and money getting paid and the money
you can make saves in tuition.

Speaker 2 (01:33:58):
You know, we do what we do a lot to
work with the IBEW, do a lot of working National
Grid and these young kids that are working there are
making serious money. Oh yeah, serious money. I mean for
you know, mid to late twenties. I mean, they they
work hard, They've got to go through a training process
and apprenticeship and all that. But once they get their

(01:34:20):
you know, dot their eyes and cross their t's and
get everything completed, they're going to help a hell of
a career. The demand is still there. I have a
friend demand a strong contractor.

Speaker 6 (01:34:31):
And he needed seventy union workers this summer and probably
could can only get about fifty.

Speaker 2 (01:34:37):
Oh, buddy, mine is a plumber with the union and
he basically a good client of ours. Michael. He basically said,
for everyone they lose, or for everyone they get, they
lose two in retirement. Oh because they're aging out. Because
they're aging out. But I think it's starting to take.

Speaker 6 (01:34:52):
People are realizing that college maybe is in all it
should be, and if you have no interest in furthering
your education, go into the trades and make six figures.

Speaker 2 (01:35:01):
Not everybody has to go to college.

Speaker 6 (01:35:03):
No, right, No, I mean I'm I'm heartbroken over the
Charlie Kirk thing.

Speaker 2 (01:35:07):
He wrote a book.

Speaker 6 (01:35:08):
He's probably the smartest individual I've ever heard speak. I
think he runs circles around even Elon Musk in terms
of brain power. He's amazing, And he wrote a book.
College as a scam. It's not for everybody. Let's put
it that way.

Speaker 2 (01:35:22):
I don't. I think that's I think, But well, we'll
give out a couple more tickets.

Speaker 5 (01:35:27):
Yeah, let me just mention the other event that's going on.
In addition to the building of the planter boxes at
House number ten to graft Bloom Custom Builders, Boss has
built a beautiful Adirondack cabin style tiny house that will
be on display all four days of the showcase.

Speaker 6 (01:35:50):
So it's not about an eight hundred square feet but
I tell my wife figure enough for you, buddy. She'll
be attached and that to this.

Speaker 5 (01:36:00):
This thing is is really cool, Julie want. So that's
on display at House number ten. So it's on the ticket. Remember,
you can buy tickets at Saratoga Showcase of Homes dot com.
You can learn about all the houses, you can plan
your route, see the maps, see the sponsors, lanner boxes,

(01:36:21):
got the tiny all kinds of stuff. Have the car sponsor?
All right, let's let's reiterate the weekends October fourth and
fifth and October eleventh and twelfth. So let's throw out
the question when is the showcase running again this year?
When is the showcase running this or the.

Speaker 2 (01:36:40):
Website Saratoga Showcase of Homes dot com.

Speaker 5 (01:36:42):
That is it? That is it?

Speaker 6 (01:36:44):

Speaker 5 (01:36:44):
Whit your free tickets.

Speaker 6 (01:36:45):
You get your free tickets to me eight minutes minutes
eight minutes.

Speaker 5 (01:36:50):
Okay, Drew, what else is going on? What else is
going on? So we get we get lucky.

Speaker 6 (01:36:54):
I've been doing this probably twenty five years out of
the twenty nine that's been going on. And uh, I
love the Awards night. That's that vapor. We get Liz Bishop.

Speaker 5 (01:37:04):
We also have a comedian.

Speaker 2 (01:37:05):
We have a comedian this year.

Speaker 5 (01:37:07):
Yeah, Aaron Harks, local comedian, local comedian. And she's also
a singer as well.

Speaker 6 (01:37:13):
And I think with the showcase, and I've been going
to this before I was involved in the committee because
I built my house twenty years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:37:20):
I used to go to the showcase.

Speaker 6 (01:37:22):
Every little picnic basket, little cheese, crackers, maybe some wine,
and you spend a nice day and you don't have
to see them all in one day. Yeah, get spread
it over the course of a week.

Speaker 5 (01:37:32):
And the fall tradition like no other.

Speaker 6 (01:37:34):
It is. It's like the Masters exactly. And I love
seeing because the builders are just building your basic home.
The builders are going to jazz these houses up.

Speaker 5 (01:37:43):
Yeah. They go a lot of bells and whistles into it.

Speaker 2 (01:37:47):
And they're there on site. You can ask questions. All right.
The third We'll make this easy. The third caller. Whoever
calls in number three gets two free tickets. You don't
even have to answer anythow the third call we want
to talk to you, Well why did talk to you?
But the third caller one eight hundred. Talk to BGY.
You're gonna pay free admission tickets into showcase of homes,

(01:38:08):
and if you're really lucky, maybe Drew will throw in
a basket with some wine and oh boy, there you go.
There you go, there you go.

Speaker 5 (01:38:15):
I'm actually doing a basket. Believe it or not. You
are for g CAR.

Speaker 6 (01:38:18):
They have their big fundraiser doing up the basket for
g CAR Greater Capital Area Region Realtors.

Speaker 2 (01:38:26):
Right, but you used to be a part of probably
one eight hundred. Talk to BGY if you want for
two couple free tickets for the homes, they're available. Talk WGY.
Two admission tickets into the showcase of homes. You only
got a couple of minutes here.

Speaker 6 (01:38:43):
And I love the charities on the award tonight, Dave,
You've never been. But the two charities the recipients of
the homes that are the benefactors of these homes that
are built by.

Speaker 5 (01:38:54):
The building together Saratoga and Habitat is they come.

Speaker 6 (01:38:57):
On stage and they do a little speech, they talk
about their situation and it's it's heartwarming, sometimes tear jerking
to hear their stories and what an impact we've had
with the money that we raised from this charity event.

Speaker 5 (01:39:11):
And it's just it's just wonderful. Certainly, is anybody out
there calling.

Speaker 2 (01:39:15):
Well, I know that, I know that Drew. Yeah, We've
got a lot of people calling in right now. This
is what I'll say to you. You know, if you
got your health, We've all had experience with cancer and
to see these guys from tunnel to towers is such
an unbelievable So the thing is is that this is
a nice supplement people can go out and have some fun.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
