(00:05):
You're listening to the Travel Show.I'm Larry Gelwicks, that getaway guru.
We have an exciting program today. You know when is the best time to
book your airline tickets for the bestprice? And what are some of the
big flying mistakes including the outeds thateven today is canceling thousands of flights.
Lots of interest in Europe this year, particularly Rome, Portugal and Ireland.
(00:30):
Have you ever wondered why there isno McDonald's restaurant at the Salt Lake Airport?
It is reported that a woman andher two children were just kicked off
a United Airlines flight. Catch thisfor misgendering the flight attendant, one of
the favorite Italian foods for those Italiansliving in Italy, which is better Hawaii
(00:54):
or Mexico? And a excuse me, a legitimate free airport promotion. The
Travel Show is sponsored every week byMorris Columbus Travel, where you always travel
more and pay Less and Norwegian CruiseLine, the home of freestyle cruising.
Check out everything that Morris Columbus Travelhas to offer at their website morriscolumbus dot
(01:19):
com. That's morriscolumbus dot com. Also want to congratulate the good folks at
Morris Columbus Travel winner of the Bestof State Award for the fourth year in
a row. Well, you knowa question that I'm often asked is,
Larry, what is the best timeto book my airline tickets to get the
(01:41):
best price. Well, of course, flights during the peak summertime and holidays
are always more expensive. But stillthere are ways to hedge your bet and
get better deals. Now, there'sa common myth out there that certain days
you could always get a better price. Somehow Tuesday is part of that myth.
(02:04):
But it is a misconception that certaindays are better for finding flight deals.
The problem is the research simply doesnot support that. So there's no
magic data book. But there aresome sweet booking windows when airline prices are
lower. Now, for domestic trips, I recommend you start looking three four
(02:28):
five months in advance of the trip, with the exception if there's a special
event you're going to the super Bowl. By the way, I've been to
two Super Bowls. Christmas time, holidays, cruise weekends to Fort Lauderdale,
Miami, and Orlando are crazy. You want to be looking far in advance
of that and I'll tell you aninsider secret. A very good friend of
(02:53):
mine, in fact, I spoketo him this morning. Used to work
for Delta Airlines as a revenue analystin Atlanta, and he would set how
many discount seats, the price, everything. And what he told me is
that airlines know of special events. They know going in and out of Sain
(03:14):
Miami on a Saturday Sunday there arewhat fifty sixty seventy thousand people coming and
going with all the different cruise lines. They know that things get tight.
So what they often do, evenmonths and months in advance is show the
cheapest seats sold out, even thoughthey're not. They show them because people
(03:38):
panic, well we better book it, and they book it at the higher
fare. Then if the plane isnot full, then some months in advance
they will drop that inventory. Butyou do run the risk that there may
not be any available seats. Now, for international trips, I think the
booking windows a bit larger. Maybeyou should start monitoring six, seven,
(04:00):
eight months prior to the trip.Just last night I was looking at some
January and February international airfares. Youknow, every year in January I take
a group to Thailand. Yes,I'll be doing it against not put together.
So don't call the January twenty twentyfive Thailand trip sold out. I
(04:20):
keep it to thirty six people plusmyself. It's hold out in one week.
Well, I'm probably in August.I'll put the January twenty twenty six
date out there and those of youwho are on the wait list for January
twenty twenty five will contact you aheadof the general public. But anyway,
(04:45):
start looking, you know, sixseven months prior to the trip at least
again, with the exception of holidaysspecial events, you'll want that. Now,
remember that the strategy changes dramatically ifif you book with Points and Miles.
Airlines often open up award space fortheir coveted business and first class seats,
(05:09):
either when schedules are open or atthe last minute. And when schedules
open, it's about eleven months priorto your travel date. So what are
we now, the third week ofJuly. It's July twentieth today, and
so you can you'll have schedules asfar as say mid June of twenty twenty
(05:33):
five. Now, anyway, whetherthere's a particular day that's cheaper. As
I said, there's no Golden Day. The common myth that Tuesday will guarantee
you travel with the best price simplyisn't true. The reality is that airline
pricing is so dynamic, so changing, and it depends on the route and
(05:53):
travel date. There really isn't abest day. However, while air prices
flucktuait based upon when you book, midweek travel is generally cheaper than flying on
the weekends. One thing, ifyou're looking for the best prices, look
at the first flight out. Nowthat's sometimes six seven o'clock in the morning,
(06:17):
maybe eight o'clock, but that firstflight out generally has more discount seats
available. Well, we're talking aboutflying, and you know, here are
some flying mistakes. What would beyour list of flying mistakes. Here's something
that I put together, big timeflight mistakes. Just getting late to the
(06:39):
airport. You know, do youremember those OJ Simpson commercials where he's running
through the airport, hurtling chairs andbenches to get to the flight. That's
the way I used to be.I used to want to time it so
the door was almost closing when Igot on that. Now that I'm an
old man, I don't do thatanymore. I get there early, I'll
(07:03):
have something to eat, I'll relax. I never know what the TSA line
is really going to be, like, is it going to be halfway to
Provo? Or is can I justget right through? Now I have the
clear. There's three ways to getthrough the TSA just a general line,
(07:25):
then there's TSA PreCheck, which is, oh, it's so worth it,
and then there's clear Clear is anotherprogram you buy into, but they just
zip you to the front of theline. So I get to the airport
with lots of time to spare.Other flying mistakes. If you're traveling with
infants or toddlers, bring extra diapers, extra food. You know they you
(07:53):
never know when there's going to bea delay or cancelation, and you can't
always find infant diapers or infant foodat an airport. Other big mistakes using
the restroom during takeoff and landing, removing the overhead bags before the plane is
the gate. This drives the crewabsolutely crazy. We're seeing more and more
(08:16):
of this. Next one being rudeor disrespectful to flight and attendance, trying
to squeeze past the drink and foodtrolley. I see this all the time.
Placing shoes in the aisle. Andby the way, don't ever drink
the water out of the restroom.I could give you all sorts of case
(08:41):
studies that wash your hands in it, don't brush your teeth, you ask
for a glass of water, andleaving the restroom untidy is simply no good.
Well, listen, if you're goingto be flying in the next week
or so, be sure to checkthe status of your flight. You probably
heard about the Microsoft outage yesterday, that air travel is experiencing disruptions around the
(09:07):
globe with a Microsoft outage. Iunderstand it was not a hack, it
wasn't terrorism, but it was anupdate that went awry for customers of its
three hundred and sixty five apps, including major airlines. Just yesterday in the
(09:28):
United States alone, over three thousandflights were canceled and almost twelve thousand flights
seriously delayed. So the airline saidthe outage impacted the back end systems that
they used to send key data suchas weight and balance, things that are
(09:48):
required for the plane to take off. Well, you probably saw some social
posts where airports were in total chaos. This was also true around the globe.
Just today Saturday, over sixteen hundredflights have already been canceled, so
if you have travel plans, besure to check the status of your flight
(10:09):
and see what they're doing. DeltaAirlines reported yesterday they alone canceled over one
thousand flights. Hey, listen whenwe come back in our next segment,
we're going to be joined by LisaPresley, the regional key account director with
Norwegian Cruise Line. They have aLegit free air promotion. It's one of
(10:31):
the best promotions that along with freeWi Fi, free specialty lining and all
sorts of things. Lisa will bejoining us right here on the Travel Show.
You're listening to the Travel Show onTalk Radio one oh five nine knrs.
(10:56):
Just listen and you'll know Travel Show. I'm Larry Gelwa, the getaway
Guru. Our Argentinian gaucho, CarlosFeeda is off on a CS to today,
so I'm the lone man here inthe studio. I'd like to welcome
to the Travel Show. I shouldsay welcome back a dear friend of mine,
(11:16):
Lisa Pressly, Regional key account directorfor Norwegian Cruise Lines. Lisa,
welcome back to the Travel Show.Hi, Larry, thank you so much
for the invitation. I love spendingtime with you, even if it's on
the air, I would prefer iton a cruise ship, Lisa, and
you of course can arrange that.Actually I can arrange that too for that
(11:41):
with I have some groups coming upthat I'll be hosting on Norwegian Cruise Line'd
love to have our listeners. Well, first of all, Lisa, you
have a new ship, the Aqua, coming out in April of twenty twenty
five. Give us this kind ofan insight, because the Aqua has some
very unique features she does. We'reso excited to be able to have this
(12:03):
new ship in our fleet. Andone of the things that we have changed
about the Aqua is we've made thisship so that we have less guests on
it but more space. Like thatalready. Oh my gosh, me too,
because you know, on other cruiseships you go to the pool and
the chairs or elbow to elbow, you go to stand up, and it's
(12:26):
uncomfortable because you're bumping into somebody. But on the Aqua, you're gonna have
plenty of space. You're gonna havecomfortable lounge chairs and the staff, Larry,
you're gonna love this. The staffto passenger ratio is two to one.
I mean, that's just crazy. You just don't hear about that with
(12:46):
the major cruise lines. Now Iwant you to explain to our listeners a
really new feature, the duplex rooms. There's four of them on the Aqua.
What in the world is a duplexroom. Oh, we're so excited.
This is a two story room andit's going to have three bedrooms,
three bathrooms. There's a separate livingarea, a separate dining room, and
(13:09):
it's going to accommodate up to fivepeople. Oh my gosh. Yeah,
they're going to be just absolutely beautiful, lots of room, very spacious.
These are going to be great forfamilies. Yeah, my favorite part is
the three bathrooms though. Yeahs youhave teenage daughters coming along one of the
(13:30):
cruise. Now, the other thingI've heard that NCL has announced is a
new departure port, you know whereyou board the ship in Philadelphia. Tell
us what's going on in the Cityof Brotherly Love. Yes, we're going
to have the Norwegian Jewel and thisis going to be the first time in
about fifteen years that NCL has sailedout of Philadelphia. So we're going to
(13:54):
start that in April sixteenth, oftwenty twenty six, we're going to for
seven night Bermudas for the summer, and then in the fall we're going to
offer nine, ten and eleven dayCanada New England sailings. Now I'm going
to put you on the spot hereand by the way, we're lee talking
to Lisa Pressley, Regional key accountdirector with Norwegian Cruise Line. I'm going
(14:16):
to put you on the spot becauseI have been saying over the last few
weeks that your current promotion, whichI have labeled and you're welcome to take
my brilliant idea I call it ncl'striple Discount is I've been in the travel
business forty five years and honestly,Lisa, this is straight talk. I
(14:37):
think this current promotion is absolutely thebest promotion that I can remember in forty
five years. I want you totalk about the three key elements. The
discount for the second guest, thefree air which is really a Bogo buy
one, get one free, andthen the free at sea. The free
(14:58):
at sea promotion, like you mentioned, that is definitely one of the most
valuable promotions there is. We're offeringfree unlimited open bar, so if you
like to have a glass of winewith dinner, maybe a beer later on
in the office, or a dietcoke or a diet anytime, or a
regular coke if you like your ifyou like your caffeine and your sugar,
(15:20):
and then we offer a specialty diningcredit. We have short excursion credits,
which are fifty dollars per excursion forone guest within the state room. So
let's say you're in Hawaii, maybeyou're doing the Pride of America, and
you have an overnight sailing where you'regoing to be in Kawaii for two days.
(15:41):
You could book multiple excursions during thosetwo days and get a fifty dollars
discount in each one of those. And then we also have the free Wi
Fi package, And like you mentioned, on some sailings, we're offering the
third and guests or third and fourthguests to sale for free. What about
three and then I'm going to tellyou per story with that. Go ahead.
(16:02):
Yeah. The Bogo Air promotions, this is where you buy oneing get
one free for your air all.Yeah, let me give an example.
Last year, Lisa, you'll rememberI had a group of travel show listeners
and we sailed from London as inSouthampton up to rekuvic Iceland, and it
(16:22):
was England, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Iceland. By
the way, folks, I'll bedoing that again with Norwegian Cruise Line June
of next year and we'll start inIceland and come back to England. But
anyway, so we flew Salt Laketo recuvic Iceland home from London and I
(16:48):
priced it out. What would itcost on say, Delta or United Both
of them were over twenty three hundreddollars. My price on NCL for me
was sixteen hundred. But for Kathy, on this buy one, get one
free, she went free. Thatgave us an effective airfare of eight hundred
dollars peak season to Europe and back. Now, the one thing to remember
(17:14):
is that the NCL will choose yourairline. You'll be on a major airline,
but they choose the routing of that. Lisa, we got about a
minute and a half left talk tome about some of the military teacher special
discounts and cruise. First we gotabout one minute. Okay, we have
a teacher discount that we are offering, which is a great opportunity for us
(17:40):
to thank the teachers who spend alltheir time in the classroom with our younger
children. But we're offering a fivepercent off cruise fair for them. Plus
they're getting a fifty dollars on boardcredit and this is combinable with our free
at C promotion. Our military promotionis a ten percent off and that is
(18:00):
combinable with our free at C two, and it is combinable with all of
our Lisa, we've got just afew seconds left. I'm going to put
you on the spot. A lotof good cruise choices out there in ten
seconds. Why NCL. We've gota great staff, we've got a great
hardware, and the food is phenomenal, it really is. I love sailing
(18:22):
with Norwegian Cruise Line for I meananywhere in the world. We've been talking
to Lisa Presley, Regional Key accountdirected with Norwegian Cruise Line. Thank you
Lisa for joining us when we comeback. Why no McDonald's at the airport.
(18:49):
You're listening to the travel show.I'm Larry Gelwicks, the getaway Guru,
feeling very lonely here without my sidekickCarlos Fieda, but he's currently being
an Argentinian taco And then a cisca. I'm sure and I'm going to hear
about that on Monday. Love tochat with you here on the air one
triple eight five seven eight oh one. Oh that's eight eight eight five seventy
(19:14):
eighty ten. Your questions comments,What do you recommend in travel? What
are your experiences? Just absolutely loveto hear from you. Well, you
know, when you when you goto just about any airport anywhere in the
world, but especially here in theUnited States, you see a McDonald's along
with a lot of other retail andfood outlets, but not in Salt Lake
(19:38):
City. Why no McDonald's. Wegot Burger King, We've got pizza places,
We've got the Blue Iguana, myfavorite Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake that
has a location there on Concourse Aeast side the Blue Iguana. Anyway,
why no McDonald's. Well, SaltLake Airport has done something only a handful
(20:03):
of airports have adopted, and that'scalled street pricing, meaning, say,
at Cafe Reo, which is outat the airport and in town, whatever
you pay for a food item atCafe Rio downtown or wherever, it's the
same price at the airport. It'snot this you know, fifty cent hot
dog at seven to eleven and fivedollars for the same dog out at the
(20:26):
airport. They don't do that.So whatever you pay for a meal or
a food item downtown or in SaltLake City in Utah, it will be
the same at the airport. Well, when McDonald's submitted their application to have
a location a restaurant at the SaltLake Airport in the box they had to
(20:51):
check yes, we will do streetpricing. They said, no, we
can't do this. We want tocharge higher rates. And to the credit
of the airport authority they said, hey, we love you, but no
thanks. And that's why there's noMcDonald's at the Era. By the way,
(21:11):
every Saturday, when I leave home, headed down to the kN RS
studio where the program originates. Weare syndicated on nineteen different radio stations.
I have a routine. I stopat the McDonald's on thirty third South up
by two point fifteen and I getan egg McMuffin and a diet coke with
a free refill. Thank you verymuch. My daughter Emily said, Dad,
(21:34):
I can tell on the air whenyou have had your diet coke or
not had your diet coke, andI said, well, how do you
know that? And says, whenyou've downed a couple of diet cokes and
all that caffeine, these are hervery words, you are more peppy.
I guess maybe I am. Ihad a couple this morning with that.
(22:00):
You know. One of the funthings I did growing up in San Francisco
is when I was about fifteen yearsold, our church group, our youth
church group with the congregation that Iattended there. I actually attended two different
denominations growing up, and one wasthe Baptist Church. One was the Church
(22:21):
of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. And we got an opportunity to go
out to the Oakland Airport Board andaircraft have them by design, by planning,
declared emergency and the shoots you know, come down with you slide down.
(22:42):
We all got to make that jumpand slide down. We had to
do it twice. It was somuch fun. You see, for an
air plane to be certified, amongother requirements, one must be able to
completely disim bark that aircraft in anemergency situation in ninety seconds. That's true
(23:04):
for the small planes, regional jets, we call them RJ's or the jumbo
jets. You got to empty thatplane in ninety seconds. What they tell
you is you do not grab yourhand luggage. You just you just shoot
off the airplane. I wish whenwe pull up to the gate and everything's
safe, I wish, you know, it's like ten minutes or more to
(23:26):
get off that stinking plane. Iwish we could just park in ninety seconds.
Well, uh, just last week, July the twelfth, there was
an American Airlines flight from San Franciscoto Miami that had to evacuate while still
at the gate when a passenger's laptopburst in the flame, smoke going everywhere.
(23:52):
Will they hit the emergency and tellingpeople the slides came down and even
though they're still attached to the jetbridge, you don't know where the fire
spreads. You have to go downthe slides right onto the tarmac. Well,
they had passengers refusing to leave theaircraft, arguing with the crew,
(24:14):
I don't want to get off.The fire is at the back of the
plane and pee. Everyone was grabbingtheir overhead bin luggage. And though they
did not do it in ninety minutesor excuse me, ninety seconds, but
I mean, folks, if anemergency happens, follow the instructions of the
flight crew, leave your carry onthere and get off the plane. Anything
(24:37):
in your carry on, if itbecame a serious, serious emergency or fire
or worse, can be replaced.Your life, your life, your children,
your spouse, your partner. Thoselives can't be replaced. Now here's
a great one. A plane stillat the door. This was in China.
(25:00):
A passenger while the plane is onthe ground, decides to use the
restroom and is looking for the door. Finds the door, opens it up,
but it was the exit door thathad not been locked or armed yet,
and suddenly all the slides come out. The whole everybody they think there's
(25:22):
an emergency. The whole plane hadto go down because this guy is looking
for the head. Oh my gosh. The flight was canceled. Not surprising.
Now here's the report. What doyou think of this one? I
don't get political on this show.I'm simply gonna give a report. A
woman claims that she and her sixteenmonth old son and her mother were prevented
(25:49):
from flying with United Airlines because shemisgendered a flight attendant before boarding. The
woman, identified as Jenna Longoria ofTexas relayed the ordeal on a series of
videos that have been posted on Instagramand x X, formerly being Twitter.
(26:11):
In the videos, Jenna explains thatshe was trying to board a flight from
San Francisco to Austin with her family. She said, I was speaking to
one of the flight attendants and gottheir pronouns wrong, and another flight attendant
took offence and didn't like it.Jenna apologized, just said, you know,
(26:33):
I'm not very well versed in pronouns. She said, I was holding
my son. He was having tempertantrums. I had a car seat on
my back, and I wasn't focusedon anything except getting my son's car seat
on the fly and getting him comfortable. Jenna alleges that the United staff accused
her of are you ready for this? A hate crime and told her she
(26:56):
might be banned from ever flying onUnited it again. Well, then the
United Airport operation supervisor escorted her andher family away from the boarding area and
told them that the captain said youcan't fly. Now. I love this
quote. This is a direct quotefrom Jenna. Now. I grew up
(27:18):
in San Francisco, so I gottaget this. She said, quote,
I it's hard to read it.Quote we were in San Francisco. Everybody
looks the same. Sometimes it's hardin San Francisco to know if someone is
a man or a woman or feminine, or which way they're going if your
trans are transitioning. But you knowthat's their business. I don't care close
(27:44):
quote. Now, let me say, I don't go political on me,
because I'm not. Everybody should betreated with respect. By the way,
United denies this happened, But Iguess you can decide if this woman and
her mother are telling the truth.Everybody should be treated with respect and courtesy.
(28:07):
But if this allegation is true, which has gone nationwide, what do
you think did unite it overreact ifit's true. I think they weigh over
reacted. It's just crazy stuff, crazy stuff. Hey, listen, you
folks know that I love Southeast Asia. I do. I've said before,
(28:29):
if it weren't for my kids andgrandkids, Kathy and I would live in
Thailand. There's something different there. And you know when I go to I
don't go to me and mar Burmaanymore. That is just too crazy politically.
But when I go to Laos,if I go to Vietnam to Cambodia.
I love those countries, but Ifeel something different just when I leave
(28:55):
Thailand and go to one of theseother countries. Maybe it's the political history
of these areas. You know,Cambodia, in some respects, they made
the Nazis look like choir boys.Nineteen seventy five to seventy nine with Polepot
and the Kimmer Rouge, they killedabout a third of the population. They're
turning it into a stone age agrariansociety, and that mark is still on
(29:19):
them. I've told you the storyabout my friend but Tin. He's my
guide in cambod He used him fordecades and he's in his fifties now.
But the Kimmer Rouge came out tohis village and shot his parents and shot
anyone with an education. His fatherwas a schoolteacher, shot and then they
(29:44):
kidnapped him. He was twelve yearsold and put literally put a gun to
his head and said you either joinour gorilla movement or we shoot you.
So of course he did it,and you know, he had to plant
land mines, married a gun.I asked him how many gun battles were
you and he said, I don'tknow. At least fifty two one hundred.
(30:06):
The kid is twelve thirteen years old. He said, I had to
do horrible things to people, andbecause if you tried to escape and they
caught you, they would kill you, but it wouldn't be a quick death.
It could take a week or two. They would slowly torture you in
front of everybody else. And sothey didn't dare leave. But at age
sixteen, he and a friend decidedto. They had to skip. They
(30:32):
knew they were near the Thailand border, and so they had to walk through
a minefield that they didn't plant. They made it. They lived in the
jungle for six months, eating snakesand bugs and animals raw, and he
said they were so hungry at timesthey chewed tree bark well. Finally they
made it into Thailand and he's married. He's got two wonderful daughters, a
(30:56):
pharmacist and a banker. Kathy askedhim, how is it that you have
such a piece given what you've beenthrough, and he said, and these
are his very words, it's achoice, and I guess we have that
choice. I want to talk toyou more about Southeast Asia and why I
love it so much. Here onthe travel Show and we come back.
(31:18):
We're also going to be talking aboutIceland and that trip that I'll be taking
next year June twelfth to the twentysecond, from Iceland to Norway, to
the Netherlands, on to Belgium andEngland. Right here on the Travel Show.
(31:40):
You're listening to the Travel Show onTalk radio one oh five nine knrs.
Just listen and you'll know you're listeningto the Travel Show. I'm Larry
Gelwicks, that get away Guru. The Travel Show is sponsored by Morris Columbus
Travel. Do check out all thisspecialist including group tourists, at the Morris
(32:02):
Columbus website, which is easy toremember morriscolumbus dot com. Morriscolumbus dot com.
Let's go to the phone lines andtalk to Ron in Tremont. Ron,
Welcome to the Travel Show. Howcan I help you? Thank you?
First of all, I just wantto say I really enjoy your show.
Anytime I'm driving anywhere Saturday, Itune into it and really entertaining and
(32:27):
informative. Well, thank you.I hope you do a lot of driving
then on Saturday, usually during aroundthe time of your show. I'm driving
every Saturday. Yeah, very good, Ron on the way, and I
run erin. Well, I'm retiringin April and my wife and I are
planning to do a trip to theUK. What I'm you know, We're
(32:50):
going to try to spend time ineach country, and we also want to
make a day trip to Normandy. And I'm just trying to decide whether we
should try to plan it for nextsummer or way to the following summer.
And I definitely want to go whenthe you know, best weather is there.
And then also, should you know, should I have a professional put
this together? Would that be thecheapest way to do it, because we're
(33:13):
going to have to stay in youknow whatever bed and breakfasts or hotels in
each country, and there will berent a car, airfare stuff like that.
So I just wondering if economically forus the best idea would be to
have like your company, uh setthis up far so if I should just
try to do it myself, youknow, well, I strongly recommend and
(33:35):
thank you for the call and yourkind words about the show. Ron.
I always remain recommend using the servicesof a professional and experienced underline the word
experience travel advisor who simply know thingsin theory, right, you can do
anything and everything in theory, I'llsay almost everything that a say a Morris
(34:01):
Columbus travel advisor can do. Butthere's things that you don't know that are
in any profession that others don't know. I mean, like in theory,
you can do your own taxes,do a you know, a form ten
forty or something, but you're betteroff with a CPA or an accounting firm.
(34:22):
And so that's that's what I recommendthat should do here. And I
recommend that you do a lot ofresearch yourself before you go. Now far
weather wise early June, late May, I like, because of the crowds.
(34:45):
I mean, London is always crowded, but the crowds haven't hit Europe
like they will in July, andyou know those periods, and so figure
out. And what I want youto do is get a piece of paper
and put three columns on it,run A B and see the A column
is absolute must. I've got tosee these things or I will die.
(35:07):
The B list is I really reallywant to see this, but if somehow
I can't do it, life willgo on. The C list is,
you know, if it works out, I'd like to see these things.
Then plan your trip around that abC list. Take a piece of paper.
You said you're gonna be gone aboutten weeks, so go one to
fourteen or fifteen whatever it is.Day one say salt like Londa. Just
(35:30):
two weeks, all right, twoweeks. Let's say thirteen, two weeks,
fourteen days, and day one SaltLake, London. Day two is
arrived London. Day fourteen is Londonor Manchester, I'm in Edinburgh or whatever,
flying home, and then plan itout and don't overschedule yourself. I'll
tell you one thing, Okay,it depends on when you go. I
(35:52):
love going in London, going intoWestminster Abbey, excuse me, Buckingham Palace,
but that usually is mid Lie tomid September, only runs about thirty
two thirty three pounds. Find outif some of the attractions have specific times
(36:13):
that you can go for. I'lltell you Westminster Abbey you pay a fee
to go into it, but ifyou go to a service, you can
wander the place for nothing. Sothere's a lot of things to work that
out. Going over maybe when youwant to go to Normandy, I'd love
the village of han Fleur. Soall of these things, sit down with
(36:34):
a professional advisor, an international specialist, not just anybody. But if you're
calling Morris Columbus Travel, which Ihope that you will, one of their
international specialists, and put that together, don't overschedule yourself. Remember your passport
has to be good for at leastsix months beyond your return date. And
(36:54):
with that, Ron, we're comingup to the top of the hour.
Thank you so much for listening tothe show, and congratulations on your retirement.
One thing I'll tell you, mywife and I have this attitude.
I turn seventy four next week andeverybody says, Larry, what are you
(37:15):
going to retire? And I alwayshave the same answer. Ron people,
I say, what do people dowhen they retire? And they well,
they travel. I said, ohwait a minute, I'm doing that now
and I'm even getting paid to doit. So my wife and I have
this philosophy as we get to youknow, older age is whatever it is,
(37:37):
go while you can do it whileyou can, because you never know
what tomorrow holds. So with that, I wish you all the best and
give Morris Columbus a call. Youcan call them at one eight hundred triple
nine forty six, forty six oneeight hundred, triple nine forty six forty
(37:58):
six and ask for a UK specialist. Ron, thanks for listening to the
Travel show. Hey, when wecome back in our number two, I
do want to talk about Iceland.I love Iceland and a exciting trip I'll
be taking to Iceland, Norway, the Fjords, Netherlands, Belgium and England
(38:20):
next summer. A lot more ontoday's travel show. Welcome back to our
number two of the Travel Show.I'm Larry Gelwick's then get Away at Guru.
I'd love to have you join metoday on the road radio. We
talked to Ron and Tree Martin aboutgoing to the UK Triple eight five seven
(38:45):
eight oh one oh triple eight fiveseventy eighty ten. Last week I was
in Washington, DC and just aquick report, as I had made mentioned
an unbelievable honor. I was inductedinto the Rugby Hall of Fame. Now,
(39:06):
rugby worldwide is bigger than the NFL, bigger than Major League Baseball,
bigger than the NBA. The onlysport that's bigger as soccer, which of
course is just off the charts. But many of you know that I had
my own playing career at BYU andthen on a men's competition team. I've
often said that's where I learned torun fast was in rugby, because I
(39:30):
had these Polynesians, Tongans and Samoanschasing me all over the field. I
knew if they caught me, they'dstopped me into the ground. But then
I embarked on a thirty six yearcoaching career at Highland High School, never
dreaming that I would be coaching thirtysix years later. The movie Forever Strong
(39:54):
was based upon me, and theHighland team had opened in theater. There's
Coast to Coast and then a hugeinternational run because it's the second most popular
sport in the world. But tobe inducted into this elite fraternity, I
know the women and men who aremembers of this very small group, the
(40:17):
Rugby Hall of Fame, and itwas just completely overwhelming. The entire family
was there and it was just marvelous, hot and humid back there in Washington,
but just very very exciting. AndI want to mention that because I've
gotten so many text messages and emailsof congratulations and thank you so very very
(40:43):
much. May I just say too, maybe four times a week, five
six times a week. Someone willstop me in the store it happened just
yesterday in a stay and say Irecognize that voice, or they see me
on KUTV for fourteen years. I'mon the new news every Monday, not
(41:05):
as a commercial as just as anews reporter on travel News and they say,
oh, I recognize you're a Loohashirt. I always wearing Ala shirt.
It is very flattering. And thankyou very very much for saying hello.
And if we ever meet out inpublic, please take the time to
say hello, introduce yourself. AndI always stop for a few minutes in
(41:27):
chat with them, find out what'sgoing on in their lives. But I
appreciate that so much. I appreciateyou listening to the Travel Show. You
know, we're in our thirty thirdyear that I've been hosting. The Travel
show started with Don Shaeffer who retiredsome years ago, and I miss Don.
What a great guy. But thankyou for listening to the show.
(41:50):
Now. You know, one thing, as we talk about travel, I'm
asking our travel advisors at Morris ColumbusTravel do check out their website Morris Columbus
and say what are you getting calls? On and in no particular order,
Hawaii, Mexico all inclusive, Alaska, and Europe. And I said what
(42:12):
in Europe? Says, well, all over Europe, but particularly Rome,
Portugal, Ireland and some of thecountryside out of the way places. Now
I happen to love Rome. They'rein. Rome is the world's smallest country.
Did you know that with only eighthundred citizens a sovereign nation, and
(42:36):
that's Vatican City. When you thinkof Italian food, what comes to mind
probably pasta and pizza. You know, the average Italian I'm talking about in
Italy eats over forty five pounds ofpasta a year. You've been down to
the Trevie Fountain, you know. The legend is if you throw a coin
(43:00):
over your back, it means thatyou definitely will return to Rome and the
Trevy Fountain. Well over three thousandeuro that's about thirty three hundred dollars us
is collected every day by people throwingcoins into the fountain. You know.
(43:20):
Rome became Italy's capitol in eighteen seventy. Prior to that, it was up
in Florence. And women, areyou paying attention? Women in ancient Rome?
And I'm speaking pacifically to Mary Andersonright now. Women in ancient Rome
dyed their hair with goat fat andbeechwood ashes. Red and blonde were the
(43:43):
most popular colors, Mary, Iexpect to see that on you. Well,
you know, in Rome there's somany exciting things to see the Pantheon,
the Colisseum, the Vatican, TrevyFountain, the Spanish Steps, the
Forum and Gelato, Oh my gosh, Gelato. I love Florence too.
You remember the story Pinocchio, probablyfrom Walt Disney and Geppetto. Well,
(44:07):
that story was set in Florence. It was a poem and story written by
Carlo Coladi in eighteen eighty one,and it was set in a village near
Luca. And then, of coursein the Academia Museum the famous David statue
by Michelangelo. Many people referred toit as the Larry statue. I'll let
(44:30):
you make your own comparisons there. But you know what's interesting about the michael
Angelo's story is he was only atwenty what was it, twenty three years
old when he started this. Itwas culptured fifteen oh one to fifteen oh
(44:51):
three. And what Michelangelo said, and you know the famous piata I love
that statue in the Vatican where Maryis whole the adult body of her son
after the crucifixion Jesus Christ. Butof what Michelangelo would say is that in
a block of marble he would seethe finished sculptor, and his job was
(45:15):
simply to knock away the excess. Now, there's been a lot of speculation
about the David's statue of why hishands and arm, his right hand and
arm are outsized. It's larger thannormal, it's not in proportion to the
(45:37):
rest of his body. We'll seethe Michelangelo statue, which is seventeen feet
tall, was meant to be viewedfrom the bottom looking up, and once
you do that fall. Michelangelo figuredout that an oversized right hand and arm
and shoulder actually then cemmetric fit intothe image, also suggesting strength ready for
(46:05):
action. And it represents David whofaced Goliathee. He has a sling over
his shoulder, and in this theDavid's statue is a teenage boy and also
represented the beauty of youth there butthe model for Michelangelo's famous statue of David's
(46:29):
is believed to be a young teenagernamed Augusto de Duccio, and I guess
we'll never know, but he musthave been quite an athlete if he's built
like that. You know, whatis the What are some popular foods in
Italy eaten by the locals? Well, I love Italian food, but some
(46:53):
of the most iconic foods that thelocals eat, of course, is pizza.
Did you know in Italy there's reallytwo types of pizza. Neopolitan style
pizza, which has a thick, fluffy crust, tends to be smaller in
diameter because the dough hasn't been rolledout as far and it's much more filling.
(47:15):
And then the Roman style pizza, which is a very thin crunch crust
should have just a crunch to it. You have, of course, lasagna.
An interesting one is adancini, whichis it's a sicily and street food
that gets its name from the colorand it's the risotto is formed into balls
(47:37):
encrusted with bread cumbs, stuffed withthe filling and fried till crispy. Next
April, Morris Columbus Travel has aspecial Splendors of Italy tour that will include
Venice, Tuscany, Florence, Rome, the Vatican City. Perfect Time of
year. The crowds haven't hit andthe humidity hasn't hit. April fourth to
(48:00):
the fourteenth, twenty twenty five. The tour leaders you're gonna love is Mick
and Diane Smith. Experienced tour guyswill keep this to a very tight group
Splendors of Italy. And the amazingthing is what you see now. We
don't have time to go through everything. You go to Ravenna a Ravena is
(48:22):
a treasure trove of art and history. But Venice and Tuscany. I want
you to go online to Morriscolumbus dotcom, Morris Columbus dot com, scroll
down on the homepage to the MorrisMurdoch Escorted Tours and then just click on
Europe and there in April of nextyear, Splendors of Italy with Nick and
(48:45):
Diane Smith. This one will fillup fast, and yeah, you don't
want to miss it. Hey,when we come back here on the Travel
show, I want to talk aboutwhat is better a vacation to or a
vacation to an all inclusive over thetop resort in Cancun, Puerto Areta.
(49:08):
And we're going to talk about thatand some specials right now to both Hawaii
and Mexico. Here on the TravelShow. You're listening to the Travel Show
on talk radio one oh five ninekN rs. Just listen and you'll know.
(49:30):
I'm Larry Gelwicks, and this isthe Travel Show. Thank you for
spending your weekend with us, talkingtravel, dreaming tabl Whether you're an active
traveler or an armchair traveler, thankyou for making the Travel Show and me
part of your weekend. You know, I was talking about Hawaii and Mexico,
(49:52):
and I love both. But Isaid, Larry, which one is
the best. Well, I don'tknow how to answer that. You I
love Hawaii. I've actually been toHawaii. This is a true number,
one hundred and seventy times. Yearsago. I used to commute there once
or twice a month. And youknow you can rack up twenty twenty five
trips in a year if you're doingwhat I was doing commuting there. We
(50:15):
had so much business. I lovethe feeling of Hawaii. Did you know
there's one hundred and fifty two islandsin Hawaii, but eight main islands?
Can you name them? Go ahead? Start Owahu, Maui, Kawaii,
Mollakai, Lonaii, Kaho, lavethe Big Island of Hawaii and the mysterious
(50:37):
forbidden private island Nihi. How Hawaiialso has ten of the world's fourteen climate
zones. A couple of weeks ago, I talked about how they're on Mauna
Loa. You can go the Bigit's a dormant volcano on the Big Island
of Hawaii. You can go skiingin the morning. Now there's no lifts,
(50:59):
you have to hike to the top, but you can actually go snow
skiing and then come down and gosurfing there on the beach in the afternoon.
The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolatedpopulation center on Earth. Yeah,
the first European was Captain James Cookin seventeen seventy eight, and he named
(51:21):
them the Sandwich Islands in honor ofJohn Montague, the fourth Earl of Sandwich,
who was one of Cook's benefactors andsponsors. Well, I hate to
break it to you, but pineappleis not native to Hawaii. Probably came
from South America with the Spanish ineighteen thirteen. Coconuts are not native to
(51:46):
Hawaii. They were brought by theearly Polynesian explorers. And you know what's
really nice there is there's no billboards, there's no private beaches. Even Mark
Zuckerberg bought this huge pot of landon Kawaii and was kind of fighting it.
But you have to have right ofways for people to walk through your
(52:08):
property at certain intervals to get tothe public beach. What I really love
is snakes are not indigenous to Hawaii. I love Hawaii Aloha spirit, everything
about it. Did you know theHawaiian Visitors Bureau put out a Hawaii Visitors
(52:29):
Etiquette for us to keep in mind, and here it is, be kind
to everyone, respect the hula. It's more than just entertainment. Originally men
were the ones that did the hula. Remove shoes when entering a home,
ask where and when to surf, don't make any assumptions. And they're not
(52:54):
natives, they're locals. They're talkingabout the people that live there there.
They like to be referred to aslocals, not natives. And watch you're
driving. You know, the sightseeing is such a distraction. You're looking
right, you're looking left, andyou're driving in too many accidents happened.
(53:14):
I remember Kathy and I drove fromKahlui where the airport is on Maui,
where We've driven this many times, but on this particular tip, it was
about a day or two after arain and we drove to Hanna. We
counted ninety three waterfalls. It's justunbelievable. Now, don't take anything,
(53:37):
don't take coral, just don't pickup. If you want a souvenir,
go and buy it and use theright phrases. The continental USA, the
locals don't refer to as we're goingto the States or the United States.
Hawaii is part of it. Theyrefer to the mainland as the mainland and
(53:59):
the other islands jar on o Wahu. You're referring to the other islands as
not the other islands. The properterminology is the neighbor islands. And always
always give animals space, the seaturtles, the monk seal. Of course,
give the sharks a lot of spacethere and obey your lifeguard. Now,
(54:19):
what do I love about Hawaii?Well, it's the feeling, the
air, the plumeria flowers, everythingabout the cuisine. What do I love
about Mexico? The people, thefood, it's exciting, the music,
the entertainment. So what is best? Well, I can't tell you that,
(54:42):
but I will tell you some specialsbecause frankly, travel is getting more
expensive, and that's why you needa experienced and professional travel advisor at Morris
Columbus Travel, the sponsor of theshow, to help navigate this. Now
travel advisors the Hawaii specialists found I'musing six days, five nights, and
(55:06):
you can add more days if youwant, but six days is almost a
week. There in Honolulu at theTwin Finn Hotel. That is a great
location, about a half a blockfrom the beach, and it's a good,
solid three star hotel. I'd bevery happy to stay there. I
looked at the dates September five toten, one thousand and forty two,
(55:29):
including airfare, hotel taxes, andyour hotel room. When it doesn't include
are the resort fees that have tobe paid locally. President Biden promised to
get rid of them. I hopehe remembers and gets rid of them.
Now, how about can Kun andportabay Areta a solid four star all inclusive.
(55:51):
That's airfare, the resort, allyour meals, drinks, entertainment,
non motorized activities, the transfers fromthe airport to the resort, and then
even your tips and gratuities. Soyou cheap skates don't have to have that
moment of crisis? Should I reallytip him a whole quarter? Cankun at
(56:12):
the Blue Bay Grand Asmeralda, asolid four star first class all inclusive.
I'm looking at September twenty sixth tothe October first one Thoy nineteen. That's
everything, meals, drinks, airfare, Portavarta at the Occidental Nuevo Viaarta all
inclusive. I looked at some datesin September Oney twenty four I've been to
(56:35):
this hotel. I really really likeit. Now keep in mind that all
prices and promotions are subject to changeand availability at the time of booking.
Is it Hawaii or Mexico? Whynot do both? I would stay away
from can Kun from about say Augustto late October early November. They have
a seaweed problem, sargassum. Seaweedcovers much of the Caribbean, and you
(57:00):
still want to deal with it.Love part of my hey more, when
we come back on the travel show. You're listening to the travel show,
(57:25):
I'm Larry Gelwicks. They get awayGuru and missing my good Amigo Argentinian Gush
Carlos Fina. He'll be back withus next week. Let's go back to
the phone lines and talk to Tedcalling from Springville. Ted, Welcome to
the Travel show. How can Ihelp you? Hi? Larry, Hey,
(57:46):
how you doing? Ted? Youlike you seem like an old friend.
I've been listening to you for somany years, and you don't know
who I am. But well,we are friends. We'll always be friends.
We are. We used Morris Columbusto set up a river cruise and
(58:08):
we're going on at August fifth.I think we leaved here and it's on
the Danube, and I thought maybeAnd by the way, service was great,
Columbus was amazing. Thanks. Wegot us really set up and we're
excited about it. But I thoughtmaybe you might give us some pointers to
have an even better trip than we'reexpecting. Were cruise line? Cruise line?
(58:31):
Are you on? Oh, it'sa Viking Viking. That's a that's
a good line. And where doyou board your Viking ship? We're doing
a couple of add ons on thefront. We're doing Prague and we're doing
Nuremberg and then trying to remember whatthe first spot is. But we're we're
(58:55):
ending up in Budapest, and sothere's Reagansburg, and there's we're doing an
add on to a trip down toSaltzburg on that and Vienna's part of it.
Well, let me let me talkbriefly about that. Prague is one
of my favorite cities in the world. And old Town Prague spend time there
(59:20):
is like walking in Disneyland. Uh. It's just the alleyways. Uh,
there's restaurants and pubs, medieval dinners, there's a castle tour. I mean,
it really is. What I enjoyis walking around town at night.
I feel perfectly safe there, youknow. Uh, it's it's just I
(59:45):
don't even know how to describe it. It's such fun to do. It
really is a Disneyland experience. Nowmoving on to Nuremberg again, I love
old town. Uh. One ofthe fun things to do there is it's
the Kaiserberg. It's imperial courts wherethe Emperor was obligated to by decree to
(01:00:12):
hold its first imperial diet at Kaiserberg. Well, you if you see that
castle, you will recognize it immediately. You know. Another thing fun to
do in Nuremberg is the you know, after World War Two, the high
ranking Nazis were brought to trial betweennineteen forty five and nineteen forty nine in
(01:00:38):
courtroom six hundred, and there's aNuremberg Trials memorial there that's really quite interesting.
Now the court itself is still inuse and it is. Yeah,
it's a lot of fun. TheSaint Lawrence Church and say Zibaldi's Church are
(01:01:01):
just iconic in architecture. Fun thingsto do anyway, those oh, the
city walls around old town in Nuremberg, you get this sense. For me,
the most important thing to do inNuremberg is get the Nuremberg sausages and
then it brought. Now that broughtis a big one. You know,
(01:01:22):
every the towns in Germany they'll havetheir own kukin or cakes, but they
have their own sausages and usually thereyou know what a Jimmy Dean's link sausage
looks like, you know, thebrown and serve. Yeah, about that
size, what about three inches fourinches long? That's about the size of
(01:01:45):
the famous Nuremberg sausage, which manypeople say is the best sausage in all
of Germany. And they'll come usuallyon a plate of three or six.
I usually get two plates of sixmyself, and you can get with sour
kraut. Now the potato salad isvery different because they don't use mayonnaise,
(01:02:06):
but they use some oil and youknow, some spices, and it's very
very different there. Potato salad, the sour kraut, the crowd is just
different than what we get here. And then some spicy brown mustard and always
with a Zimbol bread roll. Thoseare some of the things. By the
way, I will be in Nurembergon a Christmas market's cruise. We start
(01:02:29):
there in December, December fourth, eleventh, and you see all the regular
sites seeing, but then you seethe Christmas markets, which is a six
hundred year tradition in Europe. Sotell me about the cruise itinerary, Well,
it's we have those two add onson the front. Yeah, I
try to remember what the where weget on, but at one point we
(01:02:53):
get off and we go to wetake a day trip to Salzburg, because
that was talking about, it hadto happen. Yeah, Salzburg is sound
of music, very beautiful. Oneof the things that I would recommend you
do on any river cruise is you'llget a list of shore excursions or tours
(01:03:15):
that all that are included. Occasionallya specialty. One may have a slight
cost, but you'll get anywhere fromthree to five choices. And you want
to look at the activity level.Usually one to five. One is people
with limited mobility or get tired ofFive may be a bit strenuous, you
(01:03:37):
know, like a bicycle tour orsomething like that. But look at those
and then do your own research.By the way, you said you're going
to Regensburg. I love Regensburg.It's just a wonderful I don't know much
about that. What do we knowabout Regensburg. Well, it's a smaller
town there, of course in Germany, and you have some great shopping opportunities.
(01:04:03):
The old town actually dates back tothe twelve hundreds, and you see
some Baroque architecture on the town hall. But it's the small shops, these
small restaurants, the alleyways. It'sdominated by Saint Peter's Cathedral. That's the
(01:04:26):
big part. And if you don'tknow where you are in town, you
simply look for Saint Peter's Cathedral hastwo very high steeples on it. But
with that, I'm going to saythank you for calling, thank you for
being my friend here on the air, and thank you for using the services
of Morris Columbus Travel. Here's whatI expect. See, I can only
(01:04:47):
ask a friend to do this. When you get back from your trip,
give us a call here on theair and give us a report. Okay,
you know a river cruise. I'llbe on the Rhine River with a
group of travel show listeners in Augustnext month. Looking forward to it.
(01:05:11):
You know, I mentioned earlier we'regetting a lot of calls about Ireland.
I absolutely love Ireland. You knoweverything green is connected with Ireland. Do
you know that it's green year roundand it's such a What I love is
it's a slower pace and the peopleseem to appreciate life around them. The
(01:05:36):
food is good, the people arefriendly. I look for leprechauns everywhere.
I had an interesting experience out onthe Dingle Peninsula, which and the Ring
of Carrie, that whole area insouthwest Ireland. I was there with some
friends and we stopped in this onevillage that I think has the best fish
(01:05:58):
and chips I've ever had, soI always go there. But it's a
pub. Now, pub is notsome sleazy bar and the UK A pub
is a family restaurant. Yes,they serve alcohol there too, and most
restaurants around the world serve alcohol, but it's called a pub and you get
pub food. So we were havingmy fish and chips, and kind of
(01:06:18):
a favorite drink in the UK,particularly Ireland, is Guinness. And I've
never tasted guinness, but it's avery very popular malt alcoholic drink and it
comes in a pint. So thewaiter for another for our area was walking
and he had four pints of guinnesson a tray. He tripped, all
(01:06:45):
four became airborne. All four hitme and I was drenched. To hit
me in the face, on thechest and the stomach, on the pants.
I was drenched in guinness, andthose who drink guinness know it has
a very strong odor. I reekedof alcohol. So but we're we haven't
finished our sight seeing tour, soand that we were just it wasn't with
(01:07:10):
a tour group, just we weredriving and we had a van and a
driver and guide and we were acouple hours. So I just endured it,
wiped it off. He is mostapological. I'd walk around town,
people would look at me, thereis the town drunk. He reeks of
alcohol. That was my so bevery careful in the pubs there. You
(01:07:32):
know, we have a tour thatI'll be taking that includes Ireland. And
you know, you remember Princess Bridethe movie, and you know Muggage and
remember the cliffs they climbed up.Those are the cliffs of more eight hundred
feet and they don't have a fencethat keeps you out. And every year
(01:07:53):
some knuckleheads go right to the edge, look over, a wind comes up
and they fall eight hundred feet tothe death. Now just a few,
but they have warning signs stay awayfrom the edge. Next July July seventh
to the twentieth, my wife Kathyand I will be your personal host in
