Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Travel show. I'm Larry Gelwiz, that getaway guru,
and we have a fantastic show for you today. Delta
Airlines has announced a new transoceanic NonStop flight out of
Salt Lake City. Solo travelers on cruises have a new
price where it's like what everybody else is paying. A
(00:24):
new study shows that travel can slow the effects of aging. Yes,
we have a Disney update and some fantastic Hawaii and
Mexico specials, and the Argentinian Gaucho himself, Carlos Feda, will
take us to South America with some real insights. And
of course, Carlos, you'll be leaving very soon, in about
(00:45):
two weeks, on the eleventh, Yeah, to Galapagos and Ecuador.
We talked about that last weeks. We well, we welcome
you to the show, and you know, first and foremost,
thank you for joining us, Thank you for spending your
weekend with us. We live, drink, sleep, eat, travel, and
(01:07):
we have a very special surprise. Yes, uh, Carlos Fido,
we have two dogs. I got two dogs in the
studio today, So I'm going to rename Carlos Feta Carlos Fido,
and how shall I call it the return of Pluto. Yes, yes,
(01:29):
John Potter, who was with me is on the radio
for what John sixteen years? Gosh, and you know where
does time go? Well? John is back at Columbus Travel,
back in the Bountiful and those of you who've worked
with him before, No, he's an outstanding travel advisor, as
(01:52):
are all the folks in Bountiful and all of our officer. John,
welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Thank you, and honestly feels like I've come home. I
am well you so happy to be bad So I
got two dogs in the studio.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Hey, listen, John, you and I were talking about this.
I think just yesterday, Delta Airlines has announced a new
trans oceanic international flight, not Canada, not Mexico, Carlos, I
wish we had one down to South America. And there's
actually been some talk about maybe La Tom, which is
(02:30):
Delta has an equity position in and is a code
share partner. There has been some talking it's all futuristic
of La Tom flying NonStop as a Delta CoA chair
from Salt Lake to maybe Buenos Aires or Rio. That
would be fun. Back to this one, John, non stop
(02:52):
Salt Lake to Soul. Now why why is Soul by
the way, I love Korea. Yes, particularly the bulgoki that
is like my favorite dish for dinner over there in Seoul. Kimchi.
I never got into anything that sits in an earthen
jar underground fermenting for six months. I got no use
(03:14):
for no and it's a very row tried it. I
have tried it, but it is an acquired taste kimchi.
But what is the significance John, of a non stop
to Seoul out of Salt Lake for all of Asia? Oh?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
With the Korean air Connection, you will be able to
go most places in Asia non stop from Seoul, meaning
that from Salt Lake it's a single connection instead of
the traditional double or even triple connections.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Now my second home is where than Highlands. That means
it'll be a single connection in Seoul down to Bangkok
or other cities that Korean Airlines flies. Now, a code
share is when airlines collaborate, yes, and they sell the
(04:05):
same flight the same airplane. I'll give you an example.
Salt Lake to Paris is sold. It's a Delta Airlines
airplane aircraft, but Air France sells it as if it
were Air France. So maybe on Delta it's Delta flight
you know, seven eight nine, but Air France says it's
(04:27):
Air France flight one, two three four. What about Kalem, Well,
Kalem also, yeah, they do sell it as a code
share in Amsterdam. KALM also flies into Salt Lake City,
so we have two jumbo jet flights from Salt Lake
to Amsterdam. Well on this one, Delta has a marketing
(04:49):
agreement with Korean Airlines, so you get all your Delta miles,
your mqds, all the perks and benefits of Delta, and
you'll fly on stop to so then connect anywhere you
want to go. Now, they haven't announced the flight times yet,
but I can tell you my guess, being the Mahilary
(05:10):
of travel the go dou as you anyway, I'm guessing John,
it's gonna leave about noon and arrive in Seoul four
for thirty which then you can connect anywhere in Asia
if you're connected. Of course, Korea is a fantastic destination.
Coming back, I am guessing that it will probably leave
(05:35):
between five and seven PM, arriving late morning here in
Salt Lake City.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Guess what, we have the same opportunity in flying to
South America because it is a flight maybe is operated
by Latan, but you have a co share with Delta.
You can go everywhere in South America with Delta.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
What it's nice about South America is you only change one,
two or three time zones. Yes, with that, Well, anyway,
we'll keep you posted on that.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah, June twelfth is when the Korean starts. June twelfth
next year.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Okay, John, Norwegian Cruise Line or NCL has come out
with some great promotions. They've come out a new one
which is exclusive Underscore that exclusive to Morris Columbus travel
in this area, and that is free prepaid gratuities. Now,
(06:30):
typically for two people, what are you going to pay
total on a seven day.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
On a sevenday cruise. You're going to be around two
hundred dollars easy, totally.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, I'm finding them in that one fifteen to one
twenty because a per person, so it's i'd say two
hundred to maybe two hundred and fifty for two. Well,
if you book a balcony or higher on an NCL
cruise out of Miami, and you got to book it
by the end of this week, which is Monday, which
(07:01):
is Monday, that's correct. The end of Can you believe
it's October? Oh? Shut the front door anyway, so you
gotta buy Monday. I will say they have what they
call a BX or MX. It's a sail away with
no perks, no benefits.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
It doesn't apply to that, right, and it only applies
to guess one and two. If you have children with you,
it does not apply to them.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
You know.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
One of the nice perks on NCL is on select cruises,
the third and fourth person sharing your cabin sales absolutely free.
You just pay the taxes. So Carlos and I are
planning that he and Karen will pay for the first
two guests, Kathy and I will join them in their
cabin and sale free. What do you that sounds real cozy?
Speaker 4 (07:48):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Karen? Karen would love.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
Here.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Hey listen John. But there are some other perks. So
I've just talked about third and fourth on select cruises
sale free free pee paid gratuities on a seven day
cruise value up to two hundred and fifty bucks. But
there are They do something else they call a free
air and free at sea. Give me the details on
the free air. If you book your air, the second
(08:18):
person flies free when booked the airs books with Norwegian
Cruise Lines including all taxes, including all taxes. Now you
do not get to choose your schedule. Your airline is
totally up to them, but it is a money saving option.
And then you also have your choice of the free
at sea, which is free open bar. Do you hear that, Carlos? Yes,
thank you, We can.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
Go together, Larry, Yes, for Carlos, not me. I, of
course have been a man of the cloth.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
Yes, now you will. You would surrender to the bishopping
tile workers.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Shame on you. Okay. So it's open bar, both leaded
and unleaded drinks.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
You get to add specialty dining. It's a set amount
of meals during.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
The upscale scale. Cagney Steakhouse that is a roots Chris
wanna be It's not Chris, but it's a very good restaurant.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Yes, absolutely. Then you can have a Sure Excursion credits.
You get credit discounts towards your sure excursions with a
cruise line. And then, as you mentioned on select dates,
third and fourth person sharing your cabin sale free.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
And you also get some well again that exclusive at
Morris Columbus Travel. Book it by Monday and you don't
have to sail by buddy, but you have to book
it by Monday. All right, moving along, John, we got
about a one minute left. What are people calling about now? Destinations, experiences.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
I think the two top I'm getting is Southeast Asia,
Europe's Europe is just crazy. Europe is blowing up, particularly
Italy and the UK, and after the Olympics, France is big.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Also. Yeah, we're still seeing a lot of interest, particularly
in Mexico all inclusives. Hawaii, there's a lot of interest there,
but frankly, the prices are pretty high to Hawaii. The
we do have out later in the show, I've got
a great deal at a first class four star hotel
(10:25):
in Waikiki that'll blow your brain out. Hey, listen, we
come back. We're gonna be talking more about cruising with
Asimara Deluxe Cruise Light here on the Travel Show.
Speaker 7 (10:42):
You're listening to The Travel Show on Talk Radio one
oh five nine knrs.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Just listen and you'll know you're listening to the Travel
Show and we're grateful that you're Herery Gelwicks, the Getaway Guru,
joined in studio today by John Potter and Carlos Fieda
and We're glad to have John back at Morris Columbus Travel.
(11:11):
We got a very special guest guys today, a friend
of ours who has one of the represents one of
the best cruise lines in the world.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Oh they are.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
It really is good. We'd like to welcome Mitch Platt's
strategic business development manager with Azimara Cruise Lines. Mitch, Welcome
to the Travel show.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Well, thank you so much for having me. Appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
It's very good. Now you're speaking to a wide audience.
We're syndicated on nineteen stations, most of them here in
the Inner Mountain area, but we have stations in Texas
and Florida that carry the show, so it's kind of
a direct your comments to the Inner Mountain area, but
keep in mind we're across the country also. Now, Asimara,
(11:59):
I know so is a great, great cruise line, but
I don't know that it's a household familiar cruise line.
Introduce us to.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Asimara, absolutely, absolutely so. As Tomar we are a four
ship operation and we have four identical vessels. And what
makes us very unique and very special is that our
ships are smaller. There are only thirty thousand tons, So
what that equates to is approximately seven hundred guests. But
(12:30):
because of our size, we're able to go to courts
a call that the big ships can't touch. In fact,
over sixty five percent of the places we go to
you would never be able to go thereund a mainstream
cruise line because they can't fit. So as a result,
this opens up so many more incredible destinations around the
world that typically would be overlooked by traditional cruising. Now, additionally,
(12:54):
what really makes us unique is also that we spend
more time in the ports of call than any other
cruise product, So when you start to look at our itineraries,
that really is what sets us apart. We're import longer,
meaning our guests are able to take advantage of these
wonderful destinations not only during daylight hours, but quite but
(13:16):
quite often after the sun sets. Additionally, we also have
many overnight stays, so we're probably your closest cruise product
to a land tour, yet we're much greater value and
you don't have to look out of your suitcase.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
You know, that's such an important consideration. So where does
Azumara sail?
Speaker 4 (13:40):
We go to all seven continents, so in a nutshell,
how we deploy our ships is during the spring, summer
and early fall. Our ships of predominantly in Europe, and
then when the fall rolls around, we bring one ship
back to the Western Hemisphere. We do some Canada, New
(14:00):
England for the fall foliage, we do some Caribbean. We
have another ship that does South America, another ship that
does Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and another ship that
does South Africa.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Well, that is absolutely fantastic. Now John Potter, one of
our good travel advisors in the Bountiful office, is joining
us in the radio today. John, you've had clients sale
with asimar What has been there? What do you hear
from what's their feedback when they return?
Speaker 2 (14:33):
Oh, they have been very excited. They want to go
on more. They really brag about the food. They just
go on and on and on about the food and
the beautiful ships and how the smaller and not yeah,
the service. It's not the large large you know, six thousand, Yeah, exactly,
They're they're in an intimate, more cruising type experience.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Yeah. I had some friends recently, when was it, oh,
six seven months ago, some dear friends sale with Asimara.
They could not say enough good about it, Carlos.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Mitch, I have a question, do you do anything around
South America, like from Santiago, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina
or Brazil or any other place within South America.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
What do you do with our sailings.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Yeah, no, absolutely, we have our sailings that do the
Chilean viewers. We have silis that go from Santiago, Chile
to Buenos Aires. We also have sailings that go we
have one sailing every year that goes to Antarctica. And
then additionally we have an incredible sailing it's actually coming
up this February. It's a rather longer sailing. It's from
(15:40):
Buenos Aires and in Barbadoes.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
But what's girlking very.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
Special about the ceiling? Yeah, but what's very special about
the sailing is that it goes to Rio during Carnivall
with eight double overnight so you basically have three days
in Carnivall, and we do sell tickets to the carnival
festivities at the Samba Drome as a short scursion. But
the icing on the cake on that specific sailing is
(16:05):
we also go sail in the Amazon River. We sail
all the way to Manaos and Manosa is approximately nine
hundred miles inland, and we do mix stops along the
way both.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Yeah, I've been there, a beautiful opera house. We're speaking
with Mitch Plant, strategic business development manager with Ozimar Cruises,
and Mitch, we have about two minutes left. What is
included on an Azimar cruise?
Speaker 4 (16:33):
Yeah, thank you so much for bringing that up. That
is really important. We really are a great value. We're
more inclusive, so you really don't have the nickel and diming.
We include gratuities. We include your beverages, and by beverages,
I mean standard hard spirits, a selection of wines by
the glass, selection of beer, soft drinks are included, bottled
(16:54):
water and you're specially teas and coffees are included. And
that's any time the bars are open. And then once
very unique and very special is we also include what
we call an ads amazing evening event that is more
than a short scursion. It really is an authentic cultural
event at one of the destinations that we overnight in
or we have a late night departure. Those are the
(17:17):
major inclusions, and.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
You've got some real good promotions and offers out there
right now.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
We sure do and would now we have. Yeah, yeah,
absolutely so right now, we have a wonderful offer that
runs until the end of October. It's on the majority
of our twenty twenty five sailings and that includes a
five hundred dollars on board ship credit. And then if
you book a Veranda or above, you would have your
(17:46):
choice of either complementary unlimited Wi Fi or upgrade to
the Premium liquor package. And again that runs until the
end of October.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
Well, that's the time to book it. Here at Morris
Lumbus Travel. Mitch Platt, strategic business development manager with Ozimar Cruises,
thank you for joining us here on the Travel Show.
Speaker 4 (18:09):
Oh absolutely, my pleasure. Thank you all.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
John. It's a great cruise line. Absolutely, it is upscale.
These friends I had could not say enough. But hey,
when we come back, a new study shows that travel
can slow the effects of aging. Hear that, Carlos, No,
(18:45):
you're listening to the Travel Show and we're glad that
you spend your weekend with us. I'm Larry Gelwicks, the
Getaway Guru, joined by John Potter and Carlos Fieden. Glad
to have these gentlemen here. Using the term gentlemen, very loose.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Thank you, you're already so kind, Larry.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Thank you, thank you, Glacius, you're tambian. A new study
by researchers at the Edith Cowan University in Australia, published
in Science Daily, found that traveling carlos you you want
to listen carefully to Okay, I am found that traveling
can slow down signs of aging and give you positive
(19:27):
mental health benefits. That's true. Look, I'm traveling. You are
eighty four years old. I'm traveling. I'm seventy four. I'm
a young man trapped in an old man's body, and
traveling has kept me on. John Potter thirty two years.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
No, yes, thirty two doubles.
Speaker 1 (19:44):
You know you were gone from us at Morris Columbus
for a short while and then we're so glad that
you're back. But I don't know if you remember what
I said to you when you came back. I said, John,
have so much gray hair. Now I know it.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Yes, it shows the stress I've been under the last
year and a half being away from you and your
driving abuse.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Well see now you appreciate. While aging is irreversible and
no one can turn back father time, travel can slow
it down by improving physical and mental health. From the
lead doctor in the study quote. This research employs the
principle of entropy increase to explore how tourism might impact
(20:31):
human health, both positively and negatively. The negative is when
you have to come home. This principle originally from physics,
the law of increasing entropy means that by design, things
will go from an ordered state to a disordered state.
You take an ice cube, it melts, you have some
(20:55):
metal outside. It goes from clean and pristine to rusty.
You take Larry Gelwicks and he goes from pristine to rusty.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
I think yours is I think the good food that
you eat on the cruises.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
In thail and everyone else.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
Yes, that's true. That's right. I'll be on a we
have a wonderful cruise group Transcanal Los Angeles to Tampa,
leaving in October, and I will go on as a
passenger and come off as cargo. Thank you very much. Anyway,
So now you say all of increasing entropy is things
(21:34):
by nature go from ordered to disorder. We age at
all of that. So the principle, originally from physics, refers
to the natural tendency of systems to move towards disorder
or chaos. That's me a process that is irreversible, but
(21:55):
it can be mitigated. So when you leave your day
to day life and go on vacation, John Potter, to
Disneyland or Disney World or anything Disney And where were you?
Were You in Tokyo at the airport and you couldn't.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Go to Yes, several years ago I took a group
to China and we have changed planes at Tokyo and
Ariita Airport. So I was that close to Tokyo Disneyland and
could not go because it was just an hour two layover.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
I was at Tokyo Disneyland in June of this year.
I'm so jealous and I have been there previously. Really
wonder if I love the squid on a stick snack bar?
I don't think so. You can get a child burger
and a hot dog. Anyway. When you leave your day
to day life and you often try to do things
(22:43):
that you wouldn't or couldn't do otherwise. This includes meeting
new people, participating in new activities, more relaxed lifestyle, physical
accept getting more sleep. What is it? All of these
factors can be benefit isual with and help premature aging.
(23:04):
By the way, there was a twenty twenty study by
the US Travel Association that found ninety seven percent of
survey respondents reported having a trip a vacation planned. That
doesn't mean you've gone yet, but just having it planned
or in the planning process makes them happier. Nearly three
(23:25):
and four respondents said they have greater levels of energy
day to day knowing that they have a trip planned
in the next six months. That's great, isn't that wonderful?
Wonder to kind of bolster that. There was a huge
survey taken by Census Wide. It's a public survey company,
(23:52):
and it was done worldwide, and what they found is
that people sixty five and up would they talked about
regrets in life, they would say the same thing that
And it was a ten year survey that what they found.
Quote from the researcher of Cornell University quote, based on
(24:14):
my studies, I can almost guarantee you one thing. If
you don't do it now, you will wish you had
traveled more. To sum up what I learned in one sentence,
when your traveling days are over, you will wish you
had taken one more trip.
Speaker 5 (24:36):
Ah, that's great. That's an excellent counsel.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
You know.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
I remember a couple and I tell this story with
her permission, and this was, oh my gosh, probably seventeen
eighteen years ago, and they were avid listeners to the
travel show, but they were more armchair listeners. Yes, they
might go up to Island or Yosemite or down to California,
(25:02):
but they wanted to travel see the world, you know,
And they would watch television programs on traveling all of
this stuff, but they just never did it because they
were both working and raising a family. Well, finally they
both retired. He was about sixty seven, I think she
was sixty five sixty six in that late sixties, and
(25:27):
she they were ready to go. They're sitting in my
office and talking about she's bringing out what about this?
What about this? What about looking at not only individual
travel as a couple, but they really, having not traveled bunch,
they really wanted to go with an organized group. You know,
they felt safer every you know what we tell groups.
(25:48):
The nice thing about traveling with the Morris Columbus group.
You only have to remember one thing, show up on time. Yes,
that's it, right, That is all of it, because everything
else is provided reservations, transportation meals, all of it sightseeing anyway.
And he was humming and hahn back and forth. And
(26:09):
I don't know if it was an inspired thought, but
I think maybe it was. And I said to them, listen,
whatever it is in your life, do it while you can,
go while you can, because we all know people that
(26:29):
something happens that John. It could be to themselves, a spouser, partner,
a family member, income retirement plan, something happened.
Speaker 2 (26:40):
Life happens.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
It could be healthed, it could be environmental, it could
be financial. Something happens where in an instant, our whole
life is turned upside down and you can go out
and you cannot go back, you can't retrace, and say,
I had wished. This friend of mine was a very
prominent attorney for I think Union Pacific, and I saw
(27:06):
him in our neighborhood one day and he said to me,
he says, Larry, I just was at another retirement dinner
and he goes to so many because he was an
executive officer. And he said, I always hear the same thing.
I wish I had done more things. I wish I'd traveled,
spent more time with my family, and things like that.
(27:26):
He said, what I have never heard anybody say, is
you know, I sure wish i'd gone into the office earlier.
I wish I had worked weekends. And so I just said,
you know, whatever it is you want to do, and
is with me, it's never a hard sell, do it
while you can, go while you can. And I said,
(27:48):
he didn't want a long international flight. So I said,
here's what I thought came to mind. I am hosting
one of my favorite cruises. It's called Pacific Coast from
Vancouver to southern California. It's a short flight, it is
super inexpensive, and you know it's one that would work
(28:10):
for you. And something clicked in him, and he said,
let's do it. They went, had a great time. I
was on board with them, and six months after they
got home, he died of a heart attack. Now I
don't want to be morbid, John, and that is unlikely
(28:31):
to happen. It is okay, I want to make that clear.
But to this day, she gets teary eyed, and it's
been sixteen seventeen years at least she gets teary eyed
thanking me, says, what you said triggered something in him.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
Do it?
Speaker 1 (28:46):
While you can go while you can't. And for some
of you who don't want a long flight. I'll miss
you in Thailand, and Carlos will miss you in South
America and then Gelapagos Islands. And I have a Pacific
coast cruise.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Oh that's a great one.
Speaker 1 (29:05):
I love it. It's September twenty sixth to October fourth.
Now this is nine days. Most cruises are just one week. Yeah,
this is a nine day cruise and the itinerary is fantastic.
Remember we do our own short excursions. We'll start in
Vancouver and sail that rugged Pacific northwest out through the
(29:28):
Islands down to Astoria, Oregon. Have either of you been
to Astoria?
Speaker 5 (29:32):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Yes, Yeah. That is Lewis and Clark Country. And it's
not on.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
The coast, No, everything is on the ocean.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Nine miles up the Columbia River, and it is some
of the most heavily forested country in the United States.
And I think goonies. It's a lot of movies. Anyway,
we'll spend it's a very quirky little town. They have
a trolley system and these quirky, fun fun shops. Then
(30:02):
from Astoria will follow the Pacific coastline down to my hometown,
San Francisco. And yes, San Francisco is having some issues,
but not where. We will be on what we call
the waterfront there from the Ferry Building to the cruise
terminal to Peer thirty nine Fisherman's Wharf, Geary Deli Square
that is clean and very very safe.
Speaker 5 (30:25):
Can I go to the Stinking Rose in the restaurant there?
Speaker 1 (30:28):
You're talking about your deodorant?
Speaker 2 (30:29):
No talk?
Speaker 6 (30:31):
You know?
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Restaurant is It's on Columbus Avenue, right near the Little
Italy and it's garlic. It's the Stink and Rose. It's
a fantastic restaurant. I always go up to Bulinary Deli
and get a sandwich. May it is the ultimate Italian deli. Well,
we will, I will take you. I will do all
(30:54):
the commentary on a San Francisco city tour into the
neighborhoods where I grew up. You know it's gonna be fun.
We'll cross the Golden Gate Bridge and then sail down
the Pacific coast. We'll spend two days in San Francisco.
The ship overnights. They're at the cruise terminal near Peer
(31:15):
thirty nine Fisherman's Wharf. Two relaxing days at sea, then
we go to Catalina Island, then San Diego. Now spasten
your seat, Noel. When I get back, I'm gonna give
you the price.
Speaker 7 (31:34):
You're listening to the Trapo on talk radio one oh
five nine kN rs.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Just listen and you'll know.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
Welcome back to the Travel show. I'm Larry Gelwicks to
get Away Guru, You're Maha Lari of Travel. You're a
Baron of truth in travel. Those are titles that Carlos
gave me. Anyway, and we'd like to welcome Carlos Feet
and John Potter aka Pluto. Nice to have you back. John,
always good to have you here. Carlos, Hey, just before
(32:07):
we talk about Disneyland, I want to give you the
prices of that Pacific Coast cruise that is September twenty
sixth to October fourth, Vancouver to San Diego including Catalina Island,
two full days in San Francisco, Astory, Oregon, Vancouver, British Columbia.
You will need a passport for this one because you're
(32:29):
gonna fly into Vancouver, but you probably you ought to
have one anywhere. Absolutely, you know these deal these deals
come up anyway for a nine day cruise. Now keep
in mind this is not one week. This is a
nine day cruise with Royal Caribbean. There's a great cruise line,
it really is. For an inside cabin, I'd go for
(32:51):
the balcony, but for an inside cabin four hundred seventy
four dollars. Wow. Now you have to add the tax
to it. So the tax is two hundred and eighty seven.
California has never met a tax they didn't like.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
So the total for a nine day cruise along the
Pacific coast with ME seven hundred and sixty one dollars. Now, John,
you sell cruises every day. Yeah, what kind of a
deal is this.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
That's a very good deal. That's about two hundred to
three hundred dollars less than it should be.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Yeah. Absolutely. Now, if you want an ocean view, which
is a window, add about ten bucks a day for
ninety five dollars total. But I would go for the
balcony me too. Add just four hundred and forty seven
dollars additional, and the balcony'll take you to eleven eighty
(33:45):
eight ocean view, eight fifty six inside seven sixty one.
That includes two hundred and eighty seven dollars of taxes
and peace. We'll do all of our own shore excursions.
I will show you San Francisco the Golden Gate like
you've never seen it before.
Speaker 5 (34:01):
Rye, how many people can.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
You take on these? As many as the ship will
hold a lot? Yeah, I hope, I hope we have
a big We'll have our own on board activities also. Yes.
So now, John Potter, you are, contrary to popular thought,
you are not a encyclopedia of Disney, of all things Disney.
(34:26):
You are not because that that limits you. Yeah, you
are a walking Google of all things Disney. So what's
going on, particularly this new Lightning Pass. I think there's
a lot of confusion out there. There really is.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
You've got the multi lane pass, You've got the single
laye pass, and it's like, what is the difference. So
I'm gonna break it down for you. The multi line
pass you select up to three locations.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
What do you mean locations rights?
Speaker 2 (34:53):
So whatever ride you want to do attraction, that ride,
you have three that you can choose from that you
go into the fast line that you don't stand in
line for. Once you've used one of those tickets, you
can add another one and you can do that through
the entire day. You can never have more than three
at a time. But advance, yes, you've got three in advance.
(35:15):
You can just keep adding on to them. Now, it's
not available for all the rides. It does not work
for the Radiator Springs, Racelers or the Star Wars Rise
of the Resistance, so the high high end, high occupancy
rides it does not work for. You can purchase those
up to seven days in advance if you're standing at
a Disney hotel, or up to three advance days in
(35:37):
advance if you're staying at any of the other hotels. Now,
the single.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
Disney hotel do you like in Florida? In Florida good value?
I mean, I love the Grand Floridian, where I've stayed,
But that's King.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
It's King's a Yes, there's two that I really like
if you're really looking for value, The Pop Century because
it's on the Disney Skyliner that goes between Hollywood Studios.
But my favorite would have to be a moderate hotel,
Disney's Caribbean Beach because again it's where the skyliner changes,
so your non stop to either Epcot or Hollywood Studios.
(36:11):
If you stay at the Caribbean Beach.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
Now at Disneyland, California, aren't there just two disney hotels
at Disneyland Hotels three? Oh oh, that's right, they had
a third. You have the Grand Californian, right, and you
have the Disneyland Hotel, which I stayed at in nineteen
fifty eight, the new hotel it was in those days. Yeah,
it's the third one.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
It's now called Dixie Disney's Pixar Pier.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
It used to be the something the I can't remember
the name prior, but yeah, so it's there's the three
of them. Also, the single lane pass is a little different.
You can only book your attractions there once you're inside
the park. You cannot do it in advance. It's good
for any attraction, but you only get two for an
(36:59):
entire day, but you can use it for the rides
not in. You cannot be adding and there is an
additional cost to that, and it is based on what
attraction you choose and how busy the park is going
to be on those particular days. So I really suggest
the multi lane pass. It's worth the price you have
to pay for it. You'll get a lot more done.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
Well, fantastic, you know, one of the concerns. I mean,
I love Disney and you know, my daughter, Jenny is
a total Disney file and as are her kids. She's
raising them, right, that's right. And last year she went
with me, she and her husband to Japan. Of course
Tokyo does Disney. Yeah, but we have about thirty seconds left.
(37:46):
A lot of people are concerned about the cost. Talk
to me about why it's still such a good value.
It's a value for what they offer.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Yes, it is very expensive, but if you can compare
that to other theme parts like Lagoon, which is a
great resort, it's a whole different experience.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
It really is. You're paying for the experience. Yes, I've
never had a bad experience at Disney World, either Magic
Kingdom or Digitulate. Hey, when we come back at our
number two, I've got Hawaii and Mexico all inclusives on sale.
(38:29):
Welcome back to our number two of the Travel show,
The Best two Hours in Radio. I'm Larry Gelwicks to
get Away Guru, joined today in studio by the Argentinian
gaucho himself, Carlos Feda, and Pluto has returned to his
doghouse Carlos Feida and Pluto. John Potter, one of our
(38:51):
great Morris Columbus Travel advisors in the Bountiful office. Hey,
we were talking about Hawaii and Mexico. Some great deals
out there in John, Hawaii has gotten kind of expensive.
It has. It's still a great experience it is, yes,
but it's gotten expensive. But at Morris Columbus Travel, you know,
there's two ways to find a deal. You either find
(39:15):
it or you create it, and Morris Columbus does both.
How about a six day vacation in Waikiki, five hotel
nights and then you know, take the red Eye flight
home so you get the full day there. Now, the
rates do vary by departure date and a subject to
change and availability at the time of booking, but we
were looking at October twenty fourth to the twenty ninth,
(39:38):
six days, five nights at a four star, first class
Waikiki hotel, the Romer Waikiki at the Ambassador. It eight
hundred and thirty four dollars eight hundred. I mean the
airfare is almost that. This is using what I've called
before these secret airfares and their secret because the reservation
(40:02):
desk at the airline does know anything about them. Yeah,
a handful of travel companies, Morris Columbus being one of them.
Airlines give discounter. I mean they are so deep discounts.
But you can't sell it air only. You have to
package it with a hotel, a tour, a car rental something.
(40:23):
I know, Carlos. We have these what I call secret
air fares. The actual legal name is a tour operator
fair to South America to Europe, to the South Pacific,
to Hawaii, the Caribbean to Asia. And it saves a
ton of money. John eight hundred and thirty four bucks,
including all taxes and fees. The resort fee does have
(40:46):
to be paid in person.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
Yeah, those evil resort fees.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
Oh they're awful. You know. The Biden administration said they're
going to get rid of them, and I hope they
remember you forgot.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
I hope the If not, I hope the Hairs or
the Trump does it.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
I hope they do. Anyway, that is just a fantastic crisis.
Far as the Mexico all inclusive where you know your airfare,
the transfers, the resort meals, drinks, entertainment activities are you
know are included. I think I think Mexico is the
best Mexico and cruises are the best travel values right
(41:22):
now because the Mexico inclusive includes the airfare and the
tiph oh Jesson gratuity, Carlos, you will not have that
moment of crisis. Should I really tip him a whole quarter?
Speaker 2 (41:35):
No?
Speaker 1 (41:36):
Fifty? Fine? Oh, Carlos, mui caro.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
That's generous today.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
But into Mexico, let's talk about can Kun first class
hotel at the Blue Bay Grand Esmralda all inclusive. I
looked at October thirty one to November five. You can
add more days to it. Now, this, John, this is
absolutely in insanity, as in very good insanity. Six days
(42:04):
all inclusive, including airfare and seventy seven dollars.
Speaker 2 (42:09):
You could go on vacation pay just that in food.
This is it food included that.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Is so good. And over to Porto Arta at the
Rio Jalisco. Now, John, tell us about the Rio chain
of hotels.
Speaker 2 (42:21):
Oh, they are a wonderful set of hotels in port
of Ireta. The ride along the beach up in the
Nyrid area. Great location.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
Yeah, I love Portus It's more of a colonial atmosphere. Yeah,
the icon walking the Malikan, the one mile, its pedestrian
area of shops, canteenas entertainment.
Speaker 2 (42:43):
The beautiful cathedral.
Speaker 1 (42:44):
Oh yeah, well the Church of Our Lady of Guadelupe. Yes,
there is the iconic colonial church. But I like to
go to Zona Romantica.
Speaker 5 (42:54):
Yes, and then you want there, go and go for shreams.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
God, of course, of course it's a it's a wonderful
So many.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Restaurants, Senor Frgs.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Well, you know, senior frogs. You know, my favorite restaurant
in Mexico was in Mazitlan and it closed. The shrimp bucket.
They serve one thing, and they serve it one way
only in a bucket. But you can get it steam, garland, beat, fried,
grilled whatever anyway. So at the Rio Jalisco all inclusive,
(43:23):
Puerto Bayarta, I was looking at November fourteen to nineteen,
one thousand, forty four.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
That is a good price.
Speaker 1 (43:31):
Now again, keep in mind rates vary by your travel
dates and a subject to availability and change. You can
get all of these at Morris Columbus Travel. Check out
the website Morriscolumbus dot com. That's Morris Columbus dot com.
And if you have a travel Advisor, you should have
(43:52):
their direct line, and Carlos, what is your direct line?
Eight listen a minute eight oh one four eight three,
fifty to twelve, fifty two to twelve and John eight
oh one four eight three.
Speaker 2 (44:07):
Fifty two fourteen ninety two. I'm two better than Carlos.
Speaker 1 (44:11):
Right, you're behind, That's right. You know, in the salt
in the northern Utah area, all of the Morris Columbo
direct lines are eight oh one four eight three and
John will be at fifty two to fourteen, Carlos at
fifty to twelve. Those are fantastic deals. I just don't
want to miss it. Now, let's turn our attention to
(44:35):
South America. And you know, we've talked about Ecuador, one
of our favorite countries, Argentina, I mean the steakhouses in Argentina.
We've talked about Uruguay, Brazil, Uh, Colombia. I'll be in
Cartagena when next month, next October, Chile, the Galapagos. But
(44:57):
we've never talked about Bolivia.
Speaker 5 (44:59):
No, never, we have never said anything.
Speaker 3 (45:01):
Let let's go back to what you mentioned before about
your secret fairs.
Speaker 5 (45:05):
You know, yeah, we can do better.
Speaker 3 (45:08):
I gave John landa itinerary for a couple of people
traveling into South America, and I said, John, my fair
comes up to too expensive. It's three hundred dollars more
what I expected. And then John figured out a way
to do it with which airline?
Speaker 1 (45:23):
Tom?
Speaker 5 (45:24):
Yes, how did you do that?
Speaker 1 (45:26):
You you help uss?
Speaker 2 (45:27):
Yeah, well, Delta and the Tom have an agreement, like
we talked about before, the coach share agreements. So instead
of booking them. He was traveling from Denver, so instead
of booking him from Denver on Delta, I booked him
on La Tom from Denver. Even though Delta is flying
the plane plane same Delta flight. It saved us three
(45:48):
hundred dollars a person.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
That's how we go to.
Speaker 5 (45:52):
Do to Bolivia.
Speaker 3 (45:57):
Bolivia is a wonderful country, has a lot of history,
lots of archeological remains almost everywhere, and lated Chicago, which
is just amazing. Not many people know about how to
travel and what to see in Bolivia. One of the
main features is the ruins of Tiaguanaku. This civilization goes
(46:17):
to hundreds of years before the Incas and develop and
it was the most important one. The complex is huge,
you know, it covers just quite a few miles around
the late Titicaca Now crossing the late Titicaga is one
of the easiest things. One of the agenais that we
can consider is okay, we can GOVI it cours Comachu Pichu,
(46:38):
go to Pula, you know, visit the late Icaca, and
then embark to go all the way to to La Pass.
Of course we go part of it by that tam.
So there are so many options to go. And Larry,
we have one of your best friends that call to
go to Bolivia, right, okay, yeah, And so what do
(47:00):
they want to do in Bolivia?
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Well, he served the mission there a million years ago
as a young man and man, and I was nineteen
sixty seven. He served as the mission there. And David
and Jeannette want to go back. Yes, And we did
a telephone conference call. They live in California, VI Salia,
(47:24):
South Preslo, and we talked. We talked it through and Carlos,
with no notes, whips out an itinerary that is detailed.
Speaker 2 (47:35):
Oh, I have you seen him being?
Speaker 1 (47:36):
That is a walking google of all Latin America.
Speaker 5 (47:42):
I love a lot in America.
Speaker 3 (47:43):
I know I have that passion for cultures like the
ones in Tijuanaco in Bolivia, or the ones in Peru,
the Marches, the Incas.
Speaker 5 (47:50):
That is very important to me.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
I think it is to provide the service which is
not just a travel going from place to place, but
an experience and an immersion in the culture of those
countries is the most important thing.
Speaker 1 (48:04):
Now, let me tell you something.
Speaker 3 (48:05):
I was started operating in the nineteen eighties and I
met a man called Darius Morgan.
Speaker 5 (48:14):
He developed all the tourism in Bolivia.
Speaker 3 (48:18):
He built some speedboats to go from place to place
on Lake Dkaka.
Speaker 5 (48:24):
I think that we have to praise Darius for what
he did.
Speaker 3 (48:29):
And this was out of a little table in the
lobby of the Hotel Creon, which is still operating.
Speaker 1 (48:37):
Yes, Morris Columbus Travel, I'm going to move you out
of your office and give you a little table in
the four year.
Speaker 3 (48:44):
Winter or summer, because I don't want to be in
the winter.
Speaker 1 (48:48):
So I think that there is so much.
Speaker 3 (48:50):
To see in Bolivia, so much to explore, and there
is a national park, which is the newest national park
in all of sudden America.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
I'm in America. Give Carlos a call eight oh one
for eight three point fifty two twelve here on the
travel show.
Speaker 7 (49:11):
You're listening to the Travel Show on Talk Radio one
oh five nine knrs. Just listen and you'll know.
Speaker 1 (49:24):
You're listening to the Travel Show. I'm Larry Gelwicks, the
Getaway Guru, joined today in studio by John Potter and
Carlos Feeda with Morris Columbus Travel. Check out the website
Morriscolumbus dot com. That's Morriscolumbus dot com. And if you
don't have the direct telephone number to one of the
Morris Columbus offices, you can always call one eight hundred
(49:47):
triple nine forty six forty six. One eight hundred triple
nine forty six forty six. Now, John, you sell a
lot of cruises. Carlos, you sail on a lot of cruises.
I of course am at home working so that you
two can travel.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
Let's try that out for it.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
Yes. Anyway, Oral Caribbean came out with a new announcement
regarding multi plug devices recharging devices on their ships, and
it says on their website and there was a press
release quote multi plug devices are prohibited. Now we're talking
about an adapter, not a converter, but an adapter on
(50:27):
more power. The power strips have always been prohibited, but
the adapters which you can plug in, and most ships
have both a US and European plug. You can plug
it in, and then it has additional plugins or outlets
to charge your laptop, your phone, your camera simultaneously. Well,
(50:49):
all they said, and all they still say on their
website is multi plug devices prohibited. Well, I always take
an adapter overseas and it has you know, it has
a single electronic plug in like for a plug in
a recharger, but on the bottom it has four USB ports.
That is a multiplug device. Well, we finally got some
(51:13):
clarification from Ural Caribbean that adapters where the multi plugs
are USB are okay, they're okay. Yeah. Well, speaking of okay,
we have got an award winning Salt Lake City International
Airport and we're pleased to welcome back to the Travel
Show a good friend of mine, Nancy Vohmer, director of
(51:35):
Communication and Marketing at the Salt Lake City International Airport. Nancy,
welcome back to the Travel Show.
Speaker 6 (51:43):
Oh, thank you so much for having me, Larry, It's
always a pleasure.
Speaker 1 (51:46):
Well, earlier in the show, and I'm going to ask
you to comment on this. Earlier in the show, we
announced Delta's announcement of a new NonStop Salt Lake Soul,
Korea starting June twelth. How will that impact Salt Lake.
Speaker 6 (52:03):
Well, this is something that we have been looking forward
to for many years. Actually, it was very exciting news
from Delta yesterday. And you know, when we opened the
new airport, we have built more international gates, so that
allows us to host more international routes and this route
from Salt Lake City to Seoul will really open up
(52:27):
the world to our residents and visitors. The access and
the connectivity this route will provide is really unmatched because
it will connect from outside of Inchon Airport to eighty
plus destinations in Asia and beyond. And you know that's
not only for our visitors, but also there's a lot
(52:48):
of business that takes place over in that area, and
so I think it will be a really a service
that will be very welcome, and it will be on
an Airbus A three fifty nine hundred with the that's.
Speaker 1 (53:00):
A great airplane. Great airplane, it sure.
Speaker 6 (53:03):
Is, and they have a number of Delta one suites
on that plane that provide some luxury experience and it's
going to be daily year round. So we are extremely
excited to welcome this new route.
Speaker 1 (53:16):
Are we looking at any other new airlines or new
routes or increased frequency at the airport?
Speaker 6 (53:24):
We sure are, and actually coming up on October twenty fourth,
there's a new airline of below. They will be launching
the NonStop service between Salt Lake and Santa Rosa. So
that will provide easier access to Sonoma Valley, and I
believe it or not, this will mark the one hundredth
NonStop flight to our air service portfolioally, So again we've
(53:49):
got more gates and so we're adding more destinations, and
some of the existing airlines are continually bringing back service
that may have been suspended during COVID well as adding
new service.
Speaker 1 (54:01):
Do you you know last year, not this last summer,
but twenty twenty three, we had Eurowings, an airline owned
by Luftansa, which is a very good airline, offering NonStop
Salt Lake Frankfort service. I had understood while their business,
(54:22):
what we call their loads were very good. That a
load is how many people are on the plane. They
did very very well. It was seasonal traffic. But I
know that luftans and Eurowings has had a pilot shortage
and they didn't come back this year. Do you anticipate
we'll see Lufthansa Eurowings back again at some point and
(54:43):
we certainly hope.
Speaker 6 (54:44):
So we really would like to get that NonStop service
to Frankfort back, whether it's on Eurowings Discover or on
another airline, and that's something that we're working on now
to make sure that we can get that route back
because it was something that was very popular and we
would like to have that access to Germany back again.
Speaker 1 (55:04):
Any other breaking news, what's going on at the airport,
You got to talk about the River Tunnel.
Speaker 6 (55:11):
We thank you so much for coming to our Blue
Tie gala, Larry. We really enjoyed having you there. But
come Ontober twenty second, Phase three of the new SLC
will open, and that includes the central Tunnel connecting Concourses
A and B and it has this incredible arden installation.
Speaker 2 (55:27):
Called the River Tunnel.
Speaker 6 (55:29):
We'll also be opening up five more delta gates on
Concourse B and then nearly a dozen new concessions with
both local and national favorites. And just to give you
a sampling, we have Codo Paks. We'll have a store there.
There's a new Vietnamese restaurant called Bambooza. We have Sunday's
Best Magianos Italian restaurant, swig More coffee shops are really
(55:51):
nice combination of concessions. And then the thing that's very
exciting I think for this opening is that we have
reinstalled the World map was in.
Speaker 1 (56:00):
Terminal one, Iconic World.
Speaker 6 (56:02):
Map exactly and it looks fabulous. And I have to say,
I think this area of the new SLC is my
favorite area because there's also a continuation of these large
scale art installations. We have the Canyon two point zero
as well as a new piece called Northern Light, which
is made out of that same dichroic glass as the
(56:23):
falls when you enter the airport. And then we have
a surprise.
Speaker 1 (56:30):
Installation which speaking to Nancy, director Communication Marketing at Salt
Lake International Airport. And as we wrap up this segment, Nancy,
you know that new tunnel to Terminal B. Now we
used to have to go down to about A fifteen
and then across and now it's right next to Market Street.
(56:52):
You go there, Nancy, thank you for joining us here
on the Travel Show. Welcome back to the Travel Show.
(57:17):
A lot of exciting things, guys, are happening at the
Salt Lake City International Airport is beautiful. And one of
the things they have is called street pricing. Yes, so
when you buy food instead of that ten dollars hot
dog that's fifty cents at seven to eleven that has
(57:39):
been turning on the rollers for months. Jazz kidding. I
mean street pricing means, for example, they have a Cafe
Reo at the airport, they have a Panda Express, I
have a shake shack, you know, And whatever you would pay,
say at Cafe Reel or Panda Express in town, you
(58:03):
pay at the airport because usually airports goug you to death.
Speaker 2 (58:06):
And that seven dollars bottle of water that I was
always having to buy it so nice to have it
reasonably priced.
Speaker 1 (58:12):
Yeah, anyway, so, uh do you want to you want
to guess why there is no McDonald's at the salit airport.
There's Burger King. Why is there no McDonald's.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
I'm not sure, but I've noticed they didn't have one.
Speaker 1 (58:26):
What did I just say was one of the policies
street pricing. So when when McDonald's submitted an application, they said, no,
we cannot do street pricing, and the airport said, we
love you McDonald's, but thank you, but no thank you.
They held to their policy.
Speaker 5 (58:45):
That is not Kentucky either.
Speaker 2 (58:48):
Well, but I love the pandera favorite.
Speaker 1 (58:54):
Hey, listen, you know we were sold out on one
of the most exciting tour ruises of the year, the
Christmas Markets of Europe. At six hundred year tradition. We
bought half the ship. So the discounts at Morris Columbus
range anywhere from several hundred dollars to over one thousand
(59:14):
dollars per person, less than what Alma Waterways, a de
Luxe river cruise company is selling it for. The cruise
is the Danube, Germany, Austria and Hungary Budapest starting in Nuremberg,
which in my view has absolutely the best. I mean,
they're all wonderful. You said you love Strasburg right there
(59:37):
in front of the cathedral. Do you know the name
of that cathedral? This will surprise you. In Strasburg Notre Dame.
It's Notre Dame Strasburg as opposed to Notre Dame Paris,
and there are a number of Notre Dame's. But anyway,
it's December fourth to the eleventh. You're going to save
you know, up to thousands of dollars and we have
(01:00:00):
two cabins turned back because of health reasons. I'd love
to have you join me, Kathy, and I'll be your
personal host and tour guide. Now I have a favor
to ask of both of you. All right, I want
you to stand up out of your chairs here in
the studio. Okay, okay, you're standing there. Now. I want
you to Carlos you can tango dance, and John, John,
(01:00:26):
you can break down. I want you to to start dancing.
There they go, there they go. Well, okay, maybe it's
let me tell you what happened this week at the
Nashville Airport a Southwest Airlines flight. People are waiting to
board and the south nobody's boarded yet. Southwest Airlines gate
(01:00:49):
agents at the departure gate put on some Texas line
dance music, invited anybody who wanted to in. A big
crowd came out the departure. Your gate agent there at
the Nashville Opera led the group in Texas line dancing
and there's a video out there of it. Fun. It
is so much fun. I wish we had Nancy Volmer
(01:01:11):
and we should ask for line dancing at the Salt
Lake Airport. Yeah, that would be fun, and Carlos, you
can still do your tangle. No, yes, hey, listen. Viking
Cruises is one of the top just fantastic cruise lines.
Oh yeah, we just had two events this month, one
in Ogden, one in Salt Lake a Night with the Symphony.
(01:01:32):
We have two more Viking cruise evenings called a Cruise
Night with Viking Cruises. They're free of charge. One is
in our Saint George office for those listening on kt
XU in southern Utah. It's August sixteenth at the Morris
Columbus Travel Office in Saint George at three pm and
(01:01:53):
there'll be some special promotions, discounts and all the information
on both river and ocean cruising with and then in
Salt Lake on October seventeenth, six pm at the Morris
Columbus office in Salt Lake, which is first South, second East,
ground level. It's an office build and we're on the
ground level. And of course there'll be free parking at
(01:02:16):
both of them. You don't want to hand me free?
Even better, the only man than Cheap is free. October
sixteenth in Saint George. October seventeenth in Salt Lake City
every now and then an opportunity comes for a very
very unique tour. And you know, I love Thailand. I
(01:02:39):
get there two three four times a year. In fact,
one year I was there seven times. And as Kathy
is driving me to the airport to meet a client
who's taken two hundred and fifty people over from their company,
we were going in advance, you know, a year in advance,
just a it's called a site site inspection. In the
(01:03:00):
Gelwick's family, we never miss an opportunity for cheap and
shameless humor. You know, my daughters, all three. Kathy does
not get into that. She calls it Gelwick's humor. But
but but the kids get into it. Drives are crazy anyway,
So we're driving. She says, now, this is your seventh
trip to Thailand this year, and I go yeah, And
(01:03:23):
then with a smile on her face, she says, okay,
what's her name? I had to come up with something fast, Carlos,
and what I came up with fong Ling. Now, fong
Ling actually is one of my favorite restaurants in Hong Kong.
That's the only thing I can think of. And I said,
(01:03:46):
follow well, that became the family joke to this day.
That was Oh gosh, I think yes, it was for
about it was about a year or so before COVID,
two years before COVID, so it was post mission. And
now even to this day, the kids will say, hey, Dad,
how's the other family when I'm traveling ling family, And
(01:04:11):
I say, and I come back, Well, Kathy is just
rolling her, I say, And I never should have said that. Oh,
kids are growing up, they're back in school, you know. Anyway, yess,
I never should have said that. Anyway, Listen, a unique opportunity.
You know, I love Thailand, and if it weren't for
my kids and grandkids, Kathy and I would live there.
(01:04:33):
I could do the of course, we start the radio
show here at eleven am Mountain time. That's one am
in Bangkok. That's right. I'm barely in for the night
from clubbing. But the biggest, the absolute biggest, most colorful
(01:04:53):
festival is the Lloyd Kretong Festival. And a kretong is
a large banana leaf, and it's it's a day of renewal.
It's a bit of Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Pioneer Day, Valentine's Day, Ramadan,
the Day of Atonement, Passover. It's just everything rolled into
(01:05:16):
one and what they're celebrating at Loykretong and it is
a massive festival and the epicenter is in the ancient
city of Sukkotai where they have it one of the
temples there, sound and light show. We will be in
Sukatai for this and I haven't done it since pre mission.
We left for Fresno in what twenty eleven because it's
(01:05:40):
the festival is guided by the lunar calendar, and it's
always been too close to Thanksgiving. Well, this year it's
November fifth. Next year we'll not this year. Next year
it's November fifth, and so we're going to organize a
Thailand Loikretong and Vietnam. We haven't done a Vietnam tour.
Vietnam is one of the hotspots right now, very very popular.
(01:06:03):
So uh, this Loy Cratong. They get this cratong and
you put some incense, a food offering to the gods,
a candle, and you you push it out on this
large banana leaf out on a body of water, and
and you send your bad karma, your bad feelings, your sins,
(01:06:26):
your mistakes, everything that's gone wrong the last year, and
you push it out and startle and it's and then
they have these candle lit lanterns that float up in
the sky, thousands of them. They're all and it's just
incredible balloon. It's actual lantern, you know, a bamboo and
(01:06:48):
light paper lantern, but with a with the candle flame,
it lifts it up like a hot air balloon. Now,
will you be able to fit all your sins on? No,
I'm gonna either take the whole tree. Some have suggested
perhaps a freighter out on the ocean. Thank you very much.
You should.
Speaker 5 (01:07:07):
You should repentle, not all the abuse that I'm receiving here.
Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
Don't let me tell you what I've done. I've made
an appointment with my bishop to clear up my life,
and I've made the appointment. We don't have a specific
day yet, I said, I think we're pretty safe until
the Salt Lake Temple is rededicated from a big earthquake
or something, or or a second coming or something. I said,
(01:07:32):
whatever day it's dedicated, you and I are meeting the
next day. What do you think that's not acceptable?
Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
I don't think you could cover it in one day.
Speaker 1 (01:07:45):
No, no, no, there was just send the video, okay. Anyway,
So we'll we'll spend some days in Bangkok, a dinner
cruise on the child prior of the Grand Palace, which
is to me is is a monument. It's the Royal Palace.
I've said, if you went to India, which i'll be
in this year November, and you only saw the taj Mahal,
(01:08:10):
it would be worth the trip. Of course you're not
going to just see the taj Mahll, but it would
be worth the trip. There are some places on Earth
that are worth you know, if you went to Peru
and only saw Machu Pichu, it'd be worth the trip,
Yes it is. But in Thailand, the Grand Palace. It
would be worth it if you only saw the Grand Palace.
(01:08:31):
So we'll see that. Then we'll go up to fitz Uluk,
a sighting town, Suko Thai, the Epicenter Lloyd Kotong is
celebrated all over the country, but at the epicent Then
up to Chang Mai and we'll have some options for
cooking classes, bicycle tours. Will go up to what Doisu
Tep my favorite the Gold Temple out in a national park,
(01:08:53):
my favorite temple of Thailand. Then we fly to Hanoi,
we'll spend a couple of days there. We'll even we
visit the prison where John McCain was held as a pow,
and then out to Hollong Bay. Now, for our listing audience,
if I showed you a picture of Hollong Bay, you
instantly recognize it over a thousand islands. It's an iconic
(01:09:17):
UNESCO World Heritage Site. We have charted an entire live
aboard houseboat and it's deluxe. We've taken the whole boat
and we'll be there three days, two nights. Then down
to Ho Chi Min City better known as Saigon, out
to the famous Vietcong Kuchi Tunnels. I mean it goes
on and on. The dates are October thirtieth to November fifteenth.
(01:09:43):
It's a great deal. This is trust Larry time. We've
never done one like this. I don't know if we'll
ever be able to do it again because Lloy Kirtong
is on the lunar calendar. First tour, we've taken the
Vietnam All the details at morris ms dot com. Welcome
(01:10:10):
back to the travel show, John and Carlos. I don't
know where two hours goes so fast. It really does.
Look forward to joining with you the listening audience every
Saturday on this station at this time, and I'm pleased
to announce we're carried on nineteen stations right now. It's
so much fun. We have people all over the country
(01:10:31):
calling to us. Hey, for those using the Salt Lake
City Airport, we recommend parkin Jet. There are two major
off airport parking lots. Yeah, they're both good, but I
like parkin Jet because they're locally owned. They pick you
up right at your car, they offer a free car
wash and uh yeah. And if you go to Morriscolumbus
(01:10:54):
dot com morriscolumbus dot com, there's a toolbar at the top,
click on resources and you scroll down and you get
a twenty percent You got to print the coupon, but
print six of them and keep them in your car.
A twenty percent parking lot discount. Parking Jet. That's who
That's where I always park.
Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
That's where I park.
Speaker 1 (01:11:16):
Love the twenty percent discounts Now, John, I want you
to explain what's happening, because I don't know why I
should be surprised, but I kind of am. Alaska cruises
are selling like never before. In fact, there are some
dates more than just a few for next summer twenty
(01:11:36):
twenty five that are almost sold out.
Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Yeah, it is amazing. They keep bringing in these larger
ships and they're selling out. I thought when they did
that that it would give us a lot of space.
But Alaska's so popular. Everybody wants to go to Alaska,
and we're finding that a lot of people that have
been one, two, three times keep going back. I'm one
of them. It's just a place you can do over
and over and over.
Speaker 1 (01:12:01):
What is it about Alaska that attracts people so much.
Speaker 2 (01:12:05):
I think the scenery and the wildlife.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
Now we're talking about at the nightclub on board or
on Londland. That's Larry, isn't I had someone say I
just love the whale watching in Alaska and I said, oh,
that's great, and I said, yeah, it was you at
the buffet table. Huh.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
Yes, I've seen you in a buffet Larry.
Speaker 1 (01:12:29):
Hey, listen, thank you. It's not a pretty sight. I
pick the date that works for you. But I am
doing a special cruise next year. I haven't done this
itinerary for some time. August twenty third to the thirtieth,
and that is Vancouver to Anchorage, Alaska, and what's nice
about the North South is you have two glacier days.
(01:12:52):
We'll see the granddaddy of them all, which is Glacier Bay.
And then we're in College Fjord. It's called College for
it because you will see thirteen glaciers in one fjord.
A fjord, of course, carved millenniums ago by by the
ice floe and the glaciers just carved it out of
(01:13:12):
the rock, thirteen in one day. And they name them
after colleges. Columbia Glacier, the Harvard Glacier, the Weaber State Glacier.
No Yale University University died, they went us out a glacier.
Speaker 3 (01:13:30):
No.
Speaker 1 (01:13:30):
They named them all after glaciers, and so and then
we'll see Juno catch again Skagway, and you know, it's
just absolutely fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I'd love to have you
with me August twenty third to the thirtieth of next summer.
But whenever you're gonna go, keep in mind that space
(01:13:52):
is really getting tight right now, it really is. You
want to work on it. You know, another tour that's
going to be a lot of fun is the UK.
Do you know the UK for a trans Ocean destination,
not Mexico, not Latin America, not Canada, but across the Pacific.
(01:14:12):
Across the Atlantic is the UK, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland,
Wales and of course Ireland adjacent to it. And I'll
be doing a tour. I'd love to have you with
me next year in August. Now the reason August, we'll
be visiting Scotland, Wales and England. And this is why
(01:14:35):
it's in augulest the Tattoo Festival, bagpipe and Military drum
core festival in the world, viewed by over one hundred
million people on television worldwide. There's nothing like. It's held
in the Edinburgh Castle, so that'll be one of the activities.
(01:14:55):
Tickets are so hard to get. We got forty of
them and this people are already signing up. But we'll
start in Scotland and then down through Wales. I don't
know if you ever saw for our listening audience, John,
you're too young, Carlos, You're not to remember the movie again.
You remember the movie How Green was My Valley? Yes,
(01:15:18):
that was an old black and white movie and I
love that it was about the coal miners in Wales. Yes,
and you'll see those row houses still in Wales. It
with the miners and then into England. You know, Samuel Johnson,
the most famous British man of letters, said when a
man is tired of London, he is tired of life.
(01:15:40):
Now Winston Churchill is usually attributed with that, yeah, but
it really is Samuel Johnson. Love to have you do
that join me. That's August the eleventh to the twenty. First.
The reason August is that the tattoo Festival, which has
nothing to do with the Salt Lake Temple tattoo on
(01:16:03):
Carlos's back.
Speaker 5 (01:16:04):
All over his back again, thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (01:16:09):
But there was a when the bars would be open
and all the soldiers in it. They would be a
cry tattou, which became tattoo tattoo. That was a signal
from the military to the pub owners, turn the taps off,
send the soldiers back to the barracks, and so tattoo
(01:16:30):
they would call out, and that became the tattoo Festival.
Well listen, we'll be with you next week. God bless
you have a great week. Give us a look at
