Speaker 1 (00:09):
Astros fans, cheers, Wacky Lackey. Welcome to the Crawford Box Casts.
Proud leapord for you by Crawford Bach from Carmack Brewing.
You're getting da bear. Oh my godness, the Crawford Box
Cast starts now.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Here we go.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Here's Chris Gordy and Ross Viarel.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
It is an all new Crawford Box Cast presented by
Carback Brewing and the Crawford Bach and it is do
or Die time. Recording this on Friday, September twenty six,
heading into the weekend series against the Angels. As you're
Astros playoff hopes still on life support. I just passed
the uh what do you call that? The hospital room?
(00:55):
And uh, there was a pulse. There was a pulse.
They're they're they're unconscious, but there's a And that is
the comparison we will make as we go into this
weekend Ross, because it is it is do or die time?
Speaker 2 (01:07):
How bad do you want it?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
If you're the Astros and vice versa, you're gonna need
a little help too.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yes you are. Twenty eight point two percent wild card
odds for the Houston Astros. Of course, we know they
lost the American League West to the Mariners. I mean
credit to them. They got it done. They went I
mean smoking hot down the stretch, then took care of
business against you this past weekend. You're on life support.
You lost the first two games in Sacramento. You bounce
(01:35):
back with a huge one yesterday from bro I will
at least give him a little credit. You know, he
could have imploded in that game and the season could
be over. He didn't and the bats woke up. It's
just one of those things where it's like, Okay, you
got eleven runs, could you not save those for one
of the first two games of the season. But as
we know, baseball doesn't work that way. So still some
(01:56):
scenarios to play out. I guess if we want to
lay them out, the Detroit Tigers have to either lose
two of three while you went out. Same thing for
the Guardians, or if the Red Sox get swept and
you win out, so margin for error continuing to get
thinner and thinner for the Astros as they set in
for the final game of the series this weekend in Anaheim.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, the reality of this is the Astros have to
either sweep. Sweeping would give them the best chance to
get in or take two out of three. If they
lose the series, the season is over. If they get swept,
the season is over, obviously, So that is the scenario
you are in. There's a couple different ways to look
(02:38):
at this as we look at the wild card standings.
Basically what it is is the Yankees have locked up
the top wal card spot. There they are basically four
games up on at least four games up at everybody else.
The Yankees are locked in as the first wildcard. The
Red Sox are the second wildcard. They are just one
game up on Detroit, and then the Astros are one
(02:58):
game back of Detroit. So you got Red Sox Detroit,
one game back, Astros two games back in Boston. So coincidentally,
and all this or us Boston plays Detroit, so Detroit
has been struggling a mighty The easiest way to say
path to say this is the Astros win the series
(03:20):
against the Angels and the Tigers get swept by the
Red Sox. The Red Sox are still, you know, competing
for seedings, so they have every reason to give it
their role and try to play their best as well. Again,
if Boston takes two out of three against Detroit. The
Astros would need to sweep the Angels to lock it in,
so I think their best path is Detroit losing because
(03:45):
they have been playing so bad as of late. There
is also the scenario ross where the Astros sweep and
the Red Sox gets swept by Detroit, but that one
seems far less likely.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Would you agree, Yeah, I mean all of it seems unlikely.
That's why we're sitting at twenty eight playoff odds. You know,
you had you were controlling your own destiny even started
the week, but unfortunately they dropped the two first games.
So here it is, we have to kind of find
all these scenarios that play out for you to try
to have some kind of a chance, but most importantly,
(04:16):
take care of business yourself. You can scoreboard, watch and
we can talk about all these scenarios and all that
other stuff, but you go out there and you win
three games, you're gonna give yourself the best shot. And
also you have Jason Alexander on the hill who hasn't
been quite as good the last couple of times he's
gone out, but feels like you got at least a
little bit of a shot. Bats were hot yesterday hopefully
(04:36):
they can keep that going today.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, I mean the Angels stink. I mean, that's the
reality this.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
I mean, the A's aren't great, but at least they've
been playing really good baseballs of late, so loosen to
out of three of them at least somewhat understandable. But
the Angels have been I mean they go look at
their last month. It's l L L L L after L.
I mean, you have every chance in the world to
sweep this team because of how they're playing. Now again,
you haven't played great, but this way, you gotta look
(05:04):
yourself in the mirror and.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Say, who are we.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
You know, we've a line up with Carlos Korea and
jose Al Tuvey and we're assuming maybe Jeremy Payin you
should be back this weekend with his injury. We've even
heard the outside chance that maybe Jordan gets in there
just out of necessity.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
But I mean, look at the Angels as of late.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
US lost two out of three to Kansas City, lost
two out of three to Colorado, who's terrible. They got
swept by the by the Burgers, got swept by the Mariners.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Like, this is a.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Team that, again, if if you could pick any team
right now other than the Rockies and say we want
to sweep them.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
This is the team.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
So again, you know, this is where I look at
all my hitters in the mirror and go, you know,
all right, guys, maybe carry a little momentum from that
Thursday offensive showing into this series.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Yeah, it's a scenario where I mean, this school we
kind of talked about this to to a large extent,
like the Astros can They're going to get it done
and there not because the opportunity is there. Of course,
the of course, I mean, how about a great time
for Jeremy Pin to go down with an oblique injury
and then we know, of course you mentioned yourd on
with the ankle stuff and what's gonna happen there. But man,
the guys who are on this on the field and
(06:13):
in the lineup for the Astros can get it done.
We saw eleven runs from the guys yesterday, so you're
not exactly asking for that, but if you have a bet,
I think it's questionable if they have a better roster
at this point when with all the injuries than the
then the Sacramento A's the way that they've been playing
and the way they have like five great hitters at
the top of their lineup and the Astros don't. But
(06:35):
it's not a question this weekend, it is you are
better than the Angels. Go out there and prove it
on the field and stand up with your back against
the wall, show some fight, which they did yesterday, and
keep doing that this weekend.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
And I mean Eastakparatus is basically playing with with one hamstring.
I mean it's they're trying to cut this thing out
and he's getting hits for you.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
I mean two guys got a hurt foot too, and
he was getting he was getting a RBI, got an
RBI double and was getting hitched yesterday too.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Yeah, I mean, this is it. This is this is
balls against the wall. Either you want it or you don't.
And you know, obviously some people online saying, well, I
don't care if they make it, if they're gonna go
get swept by the Yankees or the Red Sox, and
it's just like, guys, whatever happen. Like there is no
reward to missing the postseason. At least in the NFL,
you get rewarded. You miss the postseason, you get you
(07:25):
get a higher draft pick. In the NBA, you got
the lottery. Oh, you missed the playoffs, here's a lottery pick.
You got a chance to get a high draft pick
in baseball. I mean we looked at the other day tekeethon.
If they missed the playoffs, they get the eighteenth pick.
If they make the playoffs, they get the nineteenth pick.
I mean, who the bleep cares about the MLB draft
and positioning in such a crapshoot anyway, So there is
(07:46):
no big reward to missing the postseason. Either you make
it or you don't. And frankly, I would like to
say that the Astros for ninth nine consecutive years have
made the postseason because we know ross just get in,
get in, and anything can happen. We see team, We've
seen teams win one hundred games and lose in the
first round of the playoffs. So it's not crazy.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Yeah, exactly, it's point three to nine percent I think
for the first overall pick or whatever it is with
the lottery for the Major League Baseball draft. But exactly
your point. If this was the NBA, an eight seed
has to win a seven game series against a one seed.
There's much less luck factor involved in NBA basketball. Baseball
anything can happen. You can have a couple guys out there.
(08:26):
You can have Jason Alexander go out there and give
you six innings, a one run ball or whoever, and
then you know, mari U Dubond hits a couple of
crazy bloop doubles and you score three runs and you
win the game. That can happen in baseball. It's not
gonna happen in the NBA. It can happen as far
as anything goes Sunday in the NFL as well, and
same thing for baseball. So you want to get in there.
(08:48):
You have talent, especially if and also the deeper you
go into the playoffs potentially the healthier you would get
with perhaps I mean Josh Hater is an outside shot,
perhaps Jordan Alvarez as somebody who can get back into
the full and having Jeremy Panya heel up and maybe
the foot starts feeling better for Jose al Tuove to
where you can get at least have skin in the game.
(09:09):
You have a very very little chance, but it's not
no chance when it comes to baseball, and when it
comes to this team who we've seen in years past
really turn it up come playoff time.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Yeah, it is again. You just want to get in
anything could happen. Like you said, you get your on
back healthy, you get hater back healthy. I mean you
start to maybe look at and go, you know, maybe
I don't know, have they said anything on arag Getty
or some of those other guys, just you know, the
deeper you get in the playoffs, who knows what could happen.
But let's touch on some other things real quick. You
(09:43):
said it earlier from ber Valdez was outstanding on Thursday.
It was vintage fromber. Look, it isn't lost on me
that he's been terrible the last two months and basically
his only good starts were against the Rockies and the A's,
But it was in a spot when you need it
at most, and he came up big. And that's a
last time from Ervaldez wears an Astros uniform.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Look, time hills all wounds.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
The longer we go on from this moment, we'll look
back on his time as an Astro very fondly because
he was His stretch as a starter with the Astros
was one of the most dominant in the history of
the Astros organization.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Yeah, it becomes a more complicated history just because of
two bad months for for Fromber, but he stepped up
huge in twenty two. He was I mean ace or
co ace for a couple of these last years, and
he was he was co ace this year until a
couple of months ago, and for whatever reason, he just
could not get on track, couldn't find that curveball. But
(10:39):
he had it snapping perfectly yesterday that even from the
basically from the word go, you could see that he
had good life and he was hiding that curveball where
the other opposing hitters weren't seeing it. And we know
that's his most important pitch and it's been very inconsistent
for him for a couple of months. So I understand
a lot of people hate Fromber and good riddance and
(10:59):
don't hit the door and all that type of stuff.
But if you have a little perspective still, if you
go by Fangrafts, war Wins above replacement this year, he
was the third best astro this year. And maybe, of
course that is because of not maybe it's because you know,
Jordon was out all year. East I Parade has missed
a lot of time and all that other stuff. But
at the end of the day you are in your
(11:21):
position because of how great he was early in the season,
even if he did cost you for a couple of months,
at least he did have a little bit of a
bounce back yesterday, a big time bounced back yesterday, but
just not a big sample of a bounce back.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
On the flip side, Luis Garcia with some unfortunate news.
They announced that he is he is going to be
done for not just the rest of the season, but
all of twenty twenty six, as he will, as they've said,
will undergo a procedure. They haven't said exactly what, but
it's a damn shame for a guy that fought so
hard back from season ending injury two years ago, you know,
(11:57):
made a ton of rehab starts, finally got in there,
look good at times, I mean was you know, in
a small limited return back he was effective. He was
really good, look like old Luis s Garcia. But to
find out that you've lost him for the entirety of
next year already, Gosh, it just really puts it really
puts all this into man, like, you got a ton
(12:18):
of pitching injuries right now, You have a whole rotation
of injuries right.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Now yeah, it's and well, you know we uh you know,
you get in the middle of the season and you're like,
how can they not win? How can that do this?
And all this other stuff, and then like he like
you ever go back and look at like twenty twenty
or twenty one Ashros and you're like, oh my god,
I forgot that guy was on the roster or that
guy or this this guy pitched fifty games for the
(12:44):
Astros that year. Oh, Like I don't know. You find
like a random Wade Miley or whoever, and you're like, man,
I couldn't believe it. I feel like, in a few years,
we're gonna be like, oh, man, remember Haesu Sanchez. Of
course they weren't winning games that dude. I mean he
might be non tendered at the end of this year.
Oh I got like, if you go through their plate
appearance leaders, guys like in the top fifteen, here here's
(13:07):
your some of your top fifteen. Taylor Tremmeelle, Brendan Rodgers
is in the top fifteen, Chas McCormick, Zach Desenzo sixteen,
Dubon is seventh, Victor Carrattini's ninth, Hazus Sanchez is twelfth.
Cam Smith is a rookie, he's fifth. I mean, I
think in a couple of years they'll be like, oh
my god, how did they even get as close to
(13:29):
the playoffs as they did. And then when you go
to what we were talking about the the the innings
pitched still right now. Third and innings pitch for the
Astros is Ryan Gusto, he was moved to the deadline,
and Colton Gordon, who's been up and down. Number five
is Steven Oker Fromber Brown Gusto, Gordon Oker. Those are
your top five and innings pitched. How insane is that?
Speaker 2 (13:51):
It's nuts?
Speaker 3 (13:52):
And again, how they've been able to do this is
beyond me, but here they are with a chance. I
do wonder though, with the news of Luis Garcia, does
maybe with Fromber he hits the market with the way
he finished. I just wonder two things. One, what you know,
will people be lining up to make him huge offers?
Speaker 2 (14:15):
You know, maybe those offers aren't as big.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
And Two do the Astros kind of look at it
and go, look, we don't want to go a ton
of money with Fromber, but you know what, maybe we're
willing to go three four years at high money, knowing
the situation we're in with with pitching and so many
pitchers injured. I don't know, it's just well, we'll have
to see how it plays out. My initial reaction is
he's gonna get big money offers on the open market
(14:38):
because teams get desperate in in free agency. But it
did just kind of strike me with some of these
injuries to the Asteris pitching staff. Do they maybe look
back and go, you know what, We'll go a little
bit higher on the offer to Fromber to keep him
here because he's consistent or he's been consistent overall in
his uh you know, in his career that you know,
the odds of him just staying healthy and pitching, I mean,
(15:00):
you know, it could be a good thing.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Yeah, it's interesting some of his runs given up or
blow ups, but some of it was like, you know,
he just can't find his pitches, and that's what you
have to figure out. He's thirty two years old, is
he in decline? And the qualifying offer last year was
around twenty one million dollars. They give the qualifying offer
for one year deal for like twenty one twenty two
million dollars whatever, it's going to be. That's actually not
(15:24):
the craziest thing for him to say, I'm going to
accept that and then try to do a prove it
deal and get a long term thing. I don't think
it's going to happen. But I also don't know that
he's going to have that huge of a market. Also,
because we're talking about him faltering down the stretch. We're
talking about him showing decline, and I think that is
going to stick in people's mind. It was, I mean,
it was a national Major League Baseball firestorm when he
(15:48):
got crossed up with Saesar Salvez aar and it looked
like he intentionally hit him in the stomach, and guys
in another clubhouses and other front offices are going to
be wondering, is this the type of guy we want
to hand big money to it five six years?
Speaker 3 (16:04):
Yeah, No, Again, it's well, we'll have all off season
to to dissect it and kick it around. It Just
you know, you're you're going to go into spring training
with some big questions on you know, who's in this
who's in the starting pitching staff. You know, when when
you talk about just you know, who's going to be healthy,
who's going to be out. I mean you think back
to the in the two big injuries you suffered earlier
(16:26):
in the year, with the timing of when Ronel Blanco
and Hayden Wznski got hurt and both required Tommy John surgery.
Neither of those guys going to be ready for the
start of the season. So you know that's two of
your big arms that will not be ready for spring training.
Lance mccullors will make seventeen point seven million dollars again
next year for you. Uh, you know, we'll have to
(16:47):
see where he is injury wise, because it was just
one thing after another.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
This year in a minor league deal somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
You know, we just found out Braden Brandon Walter, who
was one of your nice pieces this year. He he's
gonna undergo Tommy John, So you're gonna lose him for
all of next year and then plus some. So you know,
we're we're optimistic go to aj blue Ball. We think
he could be good. Colton Gordon has certainly that could
(17:12):
go back into the into the rotation and compete for
a spot. Hadter Brown sure at the front end. Christian Xavier,
I mean he will make twenty one million next year
twenty one million.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
The year after he has to get back to his
old form.
Speaker 3 (17:26):
He's just he's been very you know, he had a
couple of good outings and then kind of just kind
of man the last couple starts, so you know, and
then and then Arraghetty, you expect to be back, but.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
We'll wait to see on that. So there's just a
whole lot of question marks. We'll have all off season
to dissect it.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
But you know, it's just kind of funny as we're
sitting here going into possibly getting into the playoffs, so
you're going, who the hell are you starting the playoffs
because you know, who do you trust.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Yeah, it's it's kind of a mess right now. And yeah,
it's interesting on Javier what that'll be and where he
fits into this rotation and going forward, and and will
he pitch on Sunday as well is something we have
to discuss. I don't know if you're planning on bringing this.
I'm Gordy not trying to spoil it, but if you
win the first two games and Hobby it's Xavier's turn
for the rotation in theory, I mean, would you go
(18:14):
are you gonna go to Hunter Brown to start the
game on three days rest. Is he just gonna be
available out of the bullpen. I'm curious to see how
things go down the stretch with the pitching as well.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Yeah, I think the reality is you just you have
to get in at any cost. You have to get in.
So that's that's the thing. I don't think you can
look as far a Heay, because that's how people arguing that, well,
who are you.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Start in game one? I don't give a damn. I mean,
you just got to get.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
In if they've got to get game one first.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Yeah, so and that requires winning these next three. So
you know, we saw they did it on on Thursday.
They threw brian A. Bray you out there to make
sure that they locked.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
In that win.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
You know, this might be a scenario where Briana Bray
might have to pitch three straight days. It just depending
on what the situation calls for. You know, it's to me,
it's all hands on deck. And uh, you know I
heard some but y'all were kicking around, you know, yeah,
Hutter Brown, do you bring him.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Back on short rest or something.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
It's just to me right now, it's all hands on
deck because you were in a winneror go home type scenario.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
Yeah, so again we go back to or I go
back to they're you're gonna get it done or they're
gonna not. It's at your feet. You can win three
games against the Angels. It's not. I mean, it's never
easy to sweep any team in baseball, no matter who
they are and how bad they are. But feels like
they're playing out the string. You brought up the recent
schedule for the Angels. I mean, they it sounds like
they are completely checked out. So hopefully Jason Alexander, we
(19:35):
know his arm's gonna be fresh. He didn't pitch a
whole lot the last time out when he gave those
seven runs in an inning and a third or whatever
it was against the Seattle Mariners, so he can regroup
bounce back. It'd be a soft landing spot, even though
you're on the road in Anaheim. At least your arm
is fresh and you got a soft lineup to go against.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Yeah, and I'll look at it this way. I mean,
him giving up seven runs, it was the Mariners who
are red hot and they have a stud lineup. You
know his other starts, I mean, you know it was
one earned against Texas it was a seven shutout against
against Toronto. You know, three runs against the Yankees, so
you know, overall he's been pretty steady. I'm actually surprised
(20:13):
looking at the you know how many games he's pitched
for in an Astrois uniform and he hasn't faced the
Angels yet. So yeah, this is all lineup I would
think he could get after. On the flip side, Kyle
Hendricks going to Night Ross I've seen. I've seen Astros
fans even given out scouting reports like you want to
hit everything to the right side of the field. If
you can get everything like hit to the outfield or
(20:33):
right field, that's where you can really do some damage
on Kyle Hendricks. It's just so odd because he has
He's pitched against the Astros three three times this year,
I believe. And the first time was four innings of
five runs back in April.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Not good.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
Uh. In June five innings of five runs, not good,
and Astro's got after him. And then just about a
month ago they saw him August thirtieth in Houston. He
went six innings of one run ball against them. So
you know, again two times you've gotten after them, one
time not so much. But at least, uh, you know,
this is the guy you've seen a bunch. Hopefully that
(21:08):
the Astros Bats can get this thing going here tonight.
And I mean, Ross, would you call Friday night a
must win?
Speaker 1 (21:16):
That?
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Sure? Why not?
Speaker 1 (21:18):
They're all must wins, everything's a must win.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
I think that's where we are. Well, make sure you
guys are loaded up on plenty of Crawford Boch from
Carbock Burring throughout this weekend. And you know, look, there's
still an outside chance that the Astros could have more
games at dyke In Park and you can enjoy Crawford
Bock over there at dyke In for possibly some playoff
games if they can get to that point. But gotta
punch your ticket, Gotta win these next three. Any closing
(21:43):
thoughts here, Ross.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Just what you said, Go out there, get it done.
It's at your feet. You got three with the Angels,
Go ahead and take care of those, get a little
help from your friends, go to the playoffs. See what happens.
I'm not too per optimistic, but at the end of
the day, uh oh, they're They're still here. It's a
miracle where they are when we go through the As
I said, we went to the list of like most
plate appearances this season, most innings pitch this season. For
(22:06):
them to be even in the playoff race, it's actually
a miracle, and hopefully they can get it done, because
more baseball is a good thing here and more baseball
is fun for all of us here in Houston, unless
you really want to start diving into the Texans who
were zero to three.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Yeah, no, not interested in that. And we'll have Rockets
media day, which is a little bit more somber knowing
that Fred Van Vliet is gonna miss any season with
an acl tair, so that sucks. But Astros could certainly
help lift the spirits of Houston just by making the
playoffs at this point. Last one for you, Ross that
I had your thoughts on on the hitting coaches, how
(22:41):
they been doing.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
You know, we made it through the whole podcast, and
I think you were going to root for Look, the
hitting coaches had a great game yesterday. They got eleven runs,
so full credit to those guys. Hopefully they can keep
up the momentum.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Yeah, and if not, odd you're on the hot seed
hitting coaches, because you're.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
The one's already on the hot seat and they might
be gone.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Yeah, my fair was a caller who told me on
the postgame show a few weeks ago. You know, I
don't know, maybe there's something they could tell Altuve. I'm like, yeah,
you know, they just sit in the dugun they go,
you know, Tuove, I think if you lower your your wrist,
you're gonna come through where they hit here, Bud, like,
you know, that's that's high school.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
Possibly.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
I don't think they're having those discussions in the dugout
on game days at the pro level.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
But yeah, you got Altuve out there on a hurt foot,
You've got Esk Paratus out there on one leg, and
Pinyon Alvarez are out out and they're not scoring runs
and we're all shocked.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Yeah, and Hazu Sanchez, who's been a career bad hitter,
we're like, god he stakes yeah no, duh.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
I said that the day they traded for him. But uh, hey, you.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
Know what, two more years of team control for Hazu Sanchez.
So looking forward to plenty more days of him in
an Astros uniform.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
He might be non tendered.
Speaker 3 (23:45):
We'll see, seriously, Yeah, Christian Walker, Yeah, you may may
may not want to put that down payment.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
On that house just yet. We'll see what happens with him.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Although twenty million next year, isn't it twenty million the
year after for him too, So.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
You got twenty million for two more years. They might
ship him out.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
We'll see.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Yeah, even if they ship him out, he might still
want to just own a home in Houston because it's
great weather down here.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
So that is gonna do it.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
