Speaker 1 (00:00):
Track, you know, uh right now? Uh, but I will
tell you that I'm I am the GM of the Astros, So.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
You're gona assure us is probably the base going forward.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
As I said, I'm the gym of the Astros, and
that's what I would expect to be tomorrow, the next day,
the next day.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Okay, Matt, see.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Uh subject for the playery about where the joke?
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Can you speak up?
Speaker 4 (00:29):
Matt? Sorry, you just haven't any further clarity that a
couple of days, you know about what the joke was?
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Your next look, I mean I I I made it
very clear that. Look, Joe is the manager and Joe's
under contract. Another question, Okay, and you.
Speaker 5 (00:46):
Guys promoted champion a very early lost your service time.
I guess in retrospector you made the same decision.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
And what do you think he gained in the Baghy
Club all year?
Speaker 5 (00:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (00:59):
I mean, look, we we needed an outfielder, and so
I felt like cam Smith learned a lot at the
major league level this year. And I think this season
that he had this year is gonna be important for
next year's development. And so I would expect that he's
gonna have a really good offseason and he's gonna come
back like Gangbusters. So I really feel like that need
(01:22):
that we had in the outfield and using him and
letting him develop and get some time. I mean, at
one point he you know, was hitting over to eighty
five with over an eight hundred ops and you know,
just like everything else, you know, you run into the
ups and downs of this game. But I think he's
gonna learn a lot and he's gonna be better for it.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Okay, Dann, Then Brian Joe First.
Speaker 6 (01:46):
Indiana, if you want to hop in statistically this year,
you guys were middle to lower of baseball. Is there
anything leed you to believe that they can improve with
the current structure you guys have in place, coaching.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Wise, middle and bottom of what you were referring to.
Speaker 6 (02:06):
Owners and the scoring position average, ops.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Home runs. Yes, I think there is areas, you know,
offense that where we can improve on. You know, I
think throughout the year we made some adjustments and we
got better in center areas, but that's I think that's
an area that we as an organization need to look into.
How can we have beil equality of bats, How can
we improve on getting on base more frequently? And and
(02:32):
and be better throughout the entire season.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Yeah, And look, I mean anytime you get your and
I missing four months, you get paritis missing two months,
you get Pinion missing a month and a half, you
get Myers missing two months. I mean your numbers are
going to be down. You know, those are everyday major
league players that you don't have on your team.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
And so.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
You know, we'll address, you know, some of the things
like taking more or pitches and being a little bit
more selective. But make no mistake, when you take pillars
out of your lineup, it's going to affect your team.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
It's going to affect some of their bats.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
When you're nine Alvarez is in a lineup, you have
to pitch him, You have to pitch guys around them differently.
And so I think the absence of the absence of
jurd On really affected us big time.
Speaker 7 (03:22):
Hey Brian, sorry Joe, have you any of your staff
members said they're that they're all coming back or you
have a chance to reevaluate, you know, your coach of
staff of the.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
Future of those stats going forward. Uh, you know, Brian,
you know season ended forty eight hours ago and we
are really trying to have some conversation and see how
we're going to move forward. So that's where we that's
where we at right now.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Okay, Channer, as you as you looking at you agree situation.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Do you think you're seeing an injury propension problem or
is it something that needs to people having term to
play and guys players.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Look, I think this is an industry wide issue with
the injury and injuries. And you know, but like everything else,
we're gonna, you know, take a look at you know,
every one of our departments, right and so just to
make sure that we're not missing anything. But I think
we have these industries. The injuries are industry wide, and
(04:25):
there's you know, there's guys throwing harder, there's guys chasing spin.
I don't think there's a magic bullet too. Why there's
so many injuries. I know we were affected big time
from it, and I think it cost us, you know,
you know, the postseason because of all the injuries. You know,
one I figured week two or three more wins with
(04:47):
I we had all of our guys. But I don't
think there's a magic bullet, you know. And as for
just you know, taking a look at this, We'll take
a look at every department. You know, uh in Baseball
Opper rations of the.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Alvara's hands situation and Myers's calf in August as You
replied that even you guys could have done different situations.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah, I mean, look for Alvarets, potentially more imaging. I
think that may have helped us, But it's it's difficult
when imaging is telling you telling you one thing, and
you know, so you try to go with what you're seeing.
But maybe if we would have got more imaging, you know,
with Alvarez, I mean I think what Myers, Myers felt like.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
You know, he was trying to push it.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
He knew other guys were, you know, hurt, and he
was trying to, you know, push it a little bit.
And you know, we just we need to get away
from this injury bug that we're up against.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Matt you get you guys that seeing more things he
wasn't played.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
That was also an emphasis going into this season, just
loving you time different, going to nexts different. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Part of it is, as I said, look, you know,
with some of our guys being out, I think that
affected you know us, I think we you know, when
Perettis went down, we started seeing less pitches pitches per
at bat, and so look, I think that's going to
be a big focus, you know for us, that you
got to hunt your pitch. Stick with hunting your pitch
and get to more to strike counts because you're making
(06:26):
the picture work a little bit harder. And I think
the fact that we chased a little bit early, it's
just I think our guys were pressing a little bit
because we had guys missing in the lineup, and we
tried to do too much.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
You know, just to add and I think there, you know,
there was a period of time when we had some
younger players at the major league level trying to feel
some of those holes, and so it takes them time
to set their feet in, and what the Major League
got back will look like potentially trying to do too
(07:01):
much because of the void of other players. But I
think they handle themselves really well. Uh, there was a
stretch there in June and July where we had younger
players performing at a high level, you know, grinding a bats,
putting great bats together, doing little things very well to
help us win games. So that's also going to take
(07:21):
away from overall numbers on pitch selection and stuff like that.
But I think as a whole. Uh, there's ways that
we can we can address that and and and we'll
do that. Were an offense that when we do the
little things well, we take pitches, we drive the ball
in hitters count. We've done it, you know, all the
years that I've been here. We just got to get
back to that discipline approach where we know that we
(07:45):
are an elite offense when we all work together. And
there were times where we kind of got away from that.
But we we have to do we have to do
a good job of bringing that mentality back and we will.
We will, there's no doubt about that.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Do you think that that's.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Players in the right layer or an effect way?
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Yeah, I was in there. I was in there all
the time, and and and we did, you know, but
there's times where, you know, there is the level of
game that we are playing, the platform, the expectations that
sometimes you know, players get away from that approach, which
is is very is very normal. We just gotta, you know,
(08:27):
continue to emphasize the importance of controlling the things that
you can control and be the best hitter you could
be in that in that in that in that bat
and if you do that, it will trickle down and
now you get a hold you whole entire offense working together.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
Okay, Ari, Christy then Brian for either of you, you guys.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
Have to turn in our locus.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
So what have you been able to evaluate so far
and what are your priorities to evaluate?
Speaker 4 (08:56):
Yeah, I mean so.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
We first of course been in to evaluate that. You know,
you came up a game short, right, and you dwell
on that, you know, for more than you'd like to,
and it's it's frustrating, and you start looking back at
you know, every single close game, the one you know,
some of the ones that you you bleue, and you
(09:19):
just play that back in your head. And so you know,
that's something that we've been dwelling on a little bit.
But I mean that's a big part of the first
forty eight. You know, it's just it's it's just hard
to envision that you're not, you know, playing in the
postseason and it's been tough. So that's pretty much what
I've been dwelling on. I haven't really gotten too much
(09:41):
after that.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
You know, for me personally, it's having conversations with our players.
I want our players to be proud of the effort
and their fight till the end. So it's me having
conversations in the club also, you know, picking up the
phone before they they start the off season and let
them know that this They fought till the end and
(10:04):
we came out short and I could hear in their
voice how they are ready to start next screen training.
You know, this is going to put a ship on
our shoulders. Like we are a postseason team. We are
built to play in October, and it was disappointing that
we're not playing today. I'm not happy about it, you know,
(10:25):
but also we are learning from things that we could
have done better. How can we improve our club? And
our players are hungry to get back to screen training
and play. That's what my forty eight hours have been.
I side with spending time with my girls, all.
Speaker 8 (10:42):
Right, Christy Bryant and then Dan So, I mean, obviously
you certainly don't want injury, but because you've had so
many and you're able to get so many young players
meaningful advantage, as do you believe that will.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Help you guys moving forward to have that experience, you know.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
I think that's a positive that guests kind of lost
out in the narrative of the injuries and and and
I don't want it to be part of the I
don't want the injuries just to be the narrative. Let's
talk about also our young players who came up and
did exceptionally well, and we're going to need those players
moving forward. We have been able to sustain these success
(11:15):
because young players come up and they play and they
turn out to be great players, all star players. And
I think we were able to find that out through
these injuries, where hey, so we've got some young arms
that came up and you know, help us get to
these late run position players who came up and you know,
(11:36):
fill some big shoes or some big time players because
they knew they need to do it. So that that
aspect not only performing but knowing that you know what
this team needs me. I'm also this is I'm showcasing,
showcasing myself for next season.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I need.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
I want to put my name on the radar where
I think this team can count on me moving forward.
And I saw that development on our players, which WHI
I think is very important when you try to sustain
winning out an organization. Yeah, okay, and I know you're
trying about evaluate players, valuate yourself.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
But do you do self evaluation.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Yeah, sorry to cut you off, but absolutely I look
at myself in the mirror every night after every game.
What can have done better? How could I communicate myself
better with the player of my staff. This is my
second year on you know, managing this club, and I
continue to grow. I'm open minded about suggestions and ideas.
(12:37):
How could I make myself, not myself better and make
my players better. Absolutely, if not I've been I would
not be helping. I would not be helping this organization
if I'm not holding myself accountable. Because at the end
of the day, I'm the manager of this team and
I'm responsible for what goes on in that clubhouse. So
(12:59):
I care about that deeply. I cary about the organization,
and I care about, you know, putting the best product
on the field because our fans expect us to win,
and I take that very seriously.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Okay, we'll go Brian Dan Michael than Matt Brian.
Speaker 7 (13:13):
If you guys going in the spring or healthy, seems
like a lot of Logjael players on the field of
you know, Grets and Gray and Hanya and all those guys.
How do you see that light out in the off
season and going in this, you're having all those guys
co exist.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Yeah, I think that's what the off season is for.
I think it is a great problem to have, but
I think that will solved itself by itself.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Okay, Dan a two parts.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Financially, where do you guys feel like you're going to
be in terms of how aggressive you guys can be
the soft season And when it comes to trades.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
Do you feel like you guys have any untouchable guys
on your roster?
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Uh? First, Uh, nobody is really untouchable. I mean you
have to keep every avenue open to try to get better,
and you know, if there's an opportunity to make a trade,
we'll make a trade. But you know, right now, our
rosters put together very well. I think we have a
really good team. If we stay healthy, we will for
sure be back in the dance in October.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
So what was the other part of that question financially,
just how the rest of you guys could possibly be.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Yeah, I mean Jim Crane is never held back, So
I mean I would think that we're going to have
the full ability to go out and you know, acquire
and get better. And if there's areas that we think
we need to improve on, whether it's a starting pitcher
or left hand bat. You know, I think we'll be
you know, in the market.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Okay, Michael mattin Jeseus, this.
Speaker 5 (14:41):
Is Joe Day and asked, also usually October, if you
guys are playing baseball at the ballparks, you guys have
any plans for your all time?
Speaker 2 (14:48):
And o's over right any out.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
There, I'll tell you. I'll share, you know what, personal
story my little one. She she was very disappointed that
we're not playing and you know, ask her, you know,
Daddy's home, we get to spend some time, and she
wasn't very thrilled about the the fact that we're not
(15:12):
in the dance. And I told her that, you know what,
maybe we we're gonna work really hard to get back
to October because everything she's known it is October, which
I you know, appreciate that from her. But you know,
she she said, Daddy, you guys are a good team,
and you know, thank you for for being here for
the next couple of days, but I wish you guys
would be in the postseason. She mentioned Halloween. We we've
(15:36):
been in hotels for Halloween all this, you know, nice
stuff that a ten year old would and and and
that you know it touched my heart because you know
how much I care about my kids, but also about
playing October. And I was suspecting to play today and
it's really difficult not to be on a baseball field
today suiting up and representing uh the city. But at
(15:56):
the same time, it's it's time for us to for
me to reflect. And you know, honestly, how you know
grateful I've been and how lucky we've been to be
in a postseason for a very long time. So for
me is it's time for me to you know, reflect
and how can we make this team better? How can
(16:18):
I make myself better, my staff better so we could
get back to October.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
Okay, Matt, hey, esus and and Jason, I'll.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
See the role involved.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Of course, how do you do that?
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Well, you know what, for for me, Matt, we're going
to sit down and go go go through that. Obviously,
you know things were shuffle around because we were missing players.
So you go from Plan A to Plan B to
Plane C. And what I do want to say is
that it's important to again remember remind how important Hotel
(16:58):
Too is for this organization. You go in there with
a plan a injuries happen. Number one, This guy is
posting every single day. You know, he plays through pain,
ups and down. Easy in there, Joe, where you want
me to be? Left field? Okay? Second base? Yes, DH, Yes,
here we go. That's very important. Now my job is
our job is to, you know, once all these guys
(17:20):
are healthy, put another plan in place where, uh, where
we could maintain all these guys healthy throughout the season.
I think that's going to be where my main focus
is going to be. How can we play these guys
where there's DH stays for everyone and you know who's
going to be playing here and there, so we could
keep this guys healthy. And once we do that, once
these guys are healthy, we we're going to find ourselves
(17:43):
playing deep in Oteba. For for me is Altuve. He's
always open to do whatever is best for the team.
And respect him immensely for that apreation important. The catcher
is interested in hospital.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Working with that, yeah, I mean we would have interest
in bringing him back, and uh, you know, having some conversations,
cause we if if you don't bring him back, he
definitely need a backup catcher.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
And he's been right.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
I think one of the best backup catchers in the league,
and so we would like to bring him back and
we'll have conversations about it, you know, but I if
he's gonna be a free agent, so if he decides
to go somewhere else, you know, we have to be
in the market for a backup and so but we
would have definitely have interest in talking to him.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
Heay, hiss, Randy and then Chandler, Yeah, can you.
Speaker 9 (18:42):
Invest this it in for press Joe? Afterwards, can you
tell me what your rotation options look like for for
next year and how realistic is it that you could
go with these arms without as I think the CRE
agency if your news forever?
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Yeah, I mean I think uh uh you know it's
gonna be headed up with with Brown and uh you know,
we're gonna have some conversations, h like we've had in
the past with you know, with Valdez, and then you know,
we got you know, some young guys that uh, you know,
we're gonna see what they could do. But you know,
(19:21):
and then we're gonna have some other guys coming back
off the I l you know, Javier is one that
I think he was the one that I thought once
he came back he started getting it up to ninety five.
He had a couple of games where he touched ninety six,
and so I think he could be a big part
of it.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
You know, blue ball.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
You guys saw what he did at the end of
the year. You know, he's still had the consecutive scoreless innings.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
You know.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
Uh, so we'll give him, you know, a good look.
And so look, we're gonna have some options. We're gonna
probably be in the market for sure to you know,
trade for an arm. But you know, we we we
definitely have options. And you know, I'll let Joe talk
to some of some of the other guys because he
wanted to get in on this too. But but I
(20:09):
do feel like, you know, we're going to have enough
options in terms of our rotation.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Yeah, and you know, just to I think he touched
on heavy. I think Heavy was really show towards the
end of the season that we we're going to see
the heavier that we saw in years back. Obviously, Hana
Brown sy young candidate for me, he's one of the
best in the game. Feeling great about him, you know,
coming back and being that that that workhorse that he
(20:36):
was this this past season and there's some young players
that we're really excited about. We were talking August September about,
you know, all the some pieces some of these younger
players that are that are coming up, which we will
have conversations once we start putting this together. But I'm
really excited about the future.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
Uh, I think that it's going to be a fun
off season for us trying to figure all these out
and trying to put the best team on the field.
I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 9 (21:02):
On the catcher situation, some people went in baseball wonder
if your catchers really had the respect for the autory
that a martemal than I have that your pitching staff
where he kind of kept them in line.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Did you do you since that your catchers have gained.
Speaker 9 (21:22):
That trust where say, if an ace kind of goes
outline that you could keep them in line because Martine
did a really good job of managing your pictures.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
Yes, to answer your question, I think our catchers did
a really good job on that aspect.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Okay, and strikeouts ran in and uh Chandler's you guys,
they impact Carlos career had coming back.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
You could talk about that.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Since your arrived and the leadership people brought back on
the field in the clubhouse and moving forward to go
in the spring.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
The second question there is a second sample size of
Zach Cole. What did he show you in this time
of and looking forward with Yeah, obviously the Carlos huge impact.
Happy to have him back, and I'll be I'll be
you know, touching base with him in the next couple
of days. We're going to go have dinner and we're
(22:22):
going to talk about a few topics that I want
to bring up. And but he will be very much
involved in my discussions about, you know, how we're going
to make screen training, how things that we're going to
address in spring training. I personally like to empower some
of our leaders to have a say, and how we're
going to address this, uh, you know, our aspects of
(22:44):
our game that we need to address up. And so
Carlos will be in the middle of those conversations. And
Zach Cole obviously came in and uh, you know, I
was very impressed with the power, uh, the how calm
and collective he was that doing his bats, how well
he played center field, the throw he made in LA
(23:06):
that last the pre the second game of that series.
I was really impressive. That was a big out in
a big moment, and he was able to execute that throw,
which I thought it was very impressive. So I'm really
excited not only about him, but a lot of the
younger players that came up this year, and as we
(23:27):
plan for our future, we got to really, you know,
consider some of these guys because they they did show
some ability to play at the highest level in doing
during a playoff run.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Kay Chandler, he said out on a lot of the
pitchers that were coming off from the il saster, you guys.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
That was a part of those the prices of why
you guys want so there have you I work working
for the guys who have played from the il ing
of the spring.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
Do you have any temper your.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
Expectations for what Visuers provided to coming off with Andrews
after first wall layoffs?
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Yeah, look, I would say that, you know, we were
really relying on you know, Javier, he came back. I
thought he did did pretty well. You know, Arragetty, he
came back off. You know, he had some good moments
and not so good moments, but you know, we really
have confidence in those guys, and you know, we felt
(24:30):
that they were going to be good and so you know,
could we have maybe addressed some pitching. I think our
focus was more on the bat and so but I
mean I still believe in some of those guys that
you know, we had that were coming back.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
But I mean I think the bat was the way.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
The bats were the way to go because we were
you know, so beat up, you know, and we needed
also to get a left hand bat.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
I talk up when you're part of financial wise, when
you're that's going to be mindy wise next year about you,
Jim is always at a pointed and just and if
you guys spoke in the gym since the season that
it's just about what next year's they they don't kind
of rang out on the plans going forward that year.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:15):
Look, so I talked to gym on a regular basis,
and you know we consistently talk about you know, the
major league team, the staff, you know, front office staff,
and so are our conversations are constant?
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Yes, yes, okay one morn English, Kim.
Speaker 5 (25:36):
Okay, if you are adressed, if you do, I apology
that they have a kind of cheap part question talking
about pictures. Have you talked about a five about what
you guys can with grants and is there update on
the coast.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
Yeah, so Lance, I'll answer that one. Look, the plan
is for Lance to come into spring training and and
try to compete and and and help this club and me.
He had some really bright moments you know, this year,
and it's very difficult coming back off an injury and
you haven't pitched in two years, and so I think
that you know, he gave us his all, and he
(26:12):
had moments where he was really good, particularly one in
