the jeweler, because you can't drinkin talk sports all day if you don't
start. Now. This is SpaceCity Saturday. Here's seven nineties Dan Matthews
(00:52):
send am straight up here on SportsTalk seven ninety, Hello and welcome in.
Hi. You hear my voice.I'm ross real it is a Space
City Saturday, but it is notwith Dan Matthews broadcasting live from Onion Creek
Cafe in the Heights. I'd actuallynever heard that intro. Maybe this is
on me, but I don't makea whole lot of the reason I gave
(01:15):
up my Saturday mornings is because Iwanted to sleep in. So I haven't
caught that that did that intro sayTrey Campbell with me here, by the
way. On Sports Talk seven eightyTray did that intro say start drinking and
talking sports and it's a ten a. I believe it AGAINDS Okay, so
we're and we're encouraging alcoholism here onSports Talk seven eighty is what you're telling
me? Correct? Yeah? Imean who doesn't want to drink at ten
(01:37):
am in the morning. I guess, well, if you're an alcoholic,
you're on board with that. It'sO Saturday. So first of all,
so this is a one off show. I'm back here. I'm calling it
the Sports RV Show. Though Treyand I appreciate you hanging out, you're
not gonna be with us much longer. You're not dying, you don't have
a terminal illness, but you're notgonna be with the iHeart Houston family for
much longer. I'm heading to thetrain station Ross. Okay, that's great.
(02:02):
Well, be be careful sometimes thoseamtraks go off the tracks. That's
something you need to keep an eyeon. Okay, So Trey is here,
I'm here on a Saturday, soI think we have to bring it
back, Tray. I think wehave to run it back. It's probably
and and maybe I'm a little bitbiased, but my favorite intro of any
show that we have on this station, just the way that it sounds,
(02:23):
the way that it's it's called imagingis the inside term. I just love
the way it is, so Iwant to hear it one more time if
I could. Let's just pretend thisis the Sports r V Show and start
it up that way, even thoughit's a Space City Saturday. Dan Matthews
out this week what that is happening? And now Ross Vi Relvial, voice
(02:50):
of Reason, Voice of Reason, other guys on The Matt Thomas Show,
and former Uber driver. This islive and local weekend Houston's sports coverage,
Houston Sport. This is this SportsRV show with rossy Arel. Okay,
(03:14):
there it go. That feels alittle bit better, It feels a little
more natural. I think it's almostit's almost actually been about a year since
I gave up the Saturday show.I did it for seven years. I
really did appreciate being all with youfolks on Saturday mornings and talking some Houston
sports and all that type of stuff. But I need my Saturdays back,
and really my Friday nights because whenyou do a Saturday show. I learned
(03:36):
this very early on in the process. When you do a Saturday show,
you cannot drink and get hammered thenight before on a Friday because then you're
gonna be completely hungover. And mostpeople are like, this is what happens
when I run into people in myregular day to day life. They're like,
Oh, you got work tomorrow, who cares? Oh you don't have
to go into work until ten oreleven or twelve or whatever. Yeah,
(03:57):
just stay out, have a couplemore. It's all good. I'm like,
yeah, that's true. True ifI had like a regular type of
job where you can go into theoffice and then like you know, sneak
away and take a nap somewhere,Like this is radio. I gotta go
on air. I gotta talk.I have to speak coherently or at least
as possible as the best of mypossible abilities. And I can't formulate thoughts
(04:18):
when I'm hung over. So Igave all that up. But that was
about a year ago. Happy tobe back today, broadcasting line from Onion
Creek in the Heights. Right nowtoday, if you're not aware, it
is the sixteenth annual h Town Chilithrow Down. They've got a live music,
there's gonna be a DJ. I'mactually going to be m seeing for
(04:39):
a little bit of the day.Basically what they told me. Trey there
was like, yeah, can youjust MC until rod Ryan gets there?
So I'm like, I'm just basicallyholding the microphone. Whenever rod Ryan shows
up, that's when I'll get off. You're a good opening act, Ross,
Yes, Yeah, I'm rod Ryan'smseeing opener. I'm not a great
MC anyways, because you kind ofgotta have this certain level of like wanting
(04:59):
to work the crowd, which Idon't really have a desire to do.
But anyways, I'm gonna be outhere at Onion Creek and the Heights.
There's the h Town Chili throw Downstarts at one o'clock. It's basically for
the wristband that you pay. It'sall you can eat chili that we're gonna
have drinks. We're gonna have agood time out here, So come on
down to Onion Creek Cafe in theHeights. I will be hanging out.
And that's why I'm doing the showhere today. Because Dan couldn't do the
(05:20):
show. They needed somebody to beout here at the he Town Chili throw
Down, and I said, fine, I will do it. So phone
lines open and available for you ifyou'd like to get on at seven one
three two one two five seven ninetyseven one three two one two five seven
ninety. You can also send tweetsto at sports RV and Trey. I
(05:44):
believe you are. You currently havea Twitter account that's not banned. Is
that correct? That is true?Yes? I agree. You want me
to say it? Yeah, well, I mean if you want to.
I didn't know if it was stillyour burner, your secret burner, if
this was publicly known, or howyou're rolling with it. Now this is
a public and information. It's atsports r M seven forty nine. Okay,
(06:04):
great, you four Ralphie Machado's oldaccount. But he let me borrow
this. You bought it from them, Yeah, I bought it from them,
but he built up the follower baseand then you bought the account.
Okay, so Ralphie Machado. That'swhy it said sports are m uh.
You can find him sports r Mseven forty nine. There's trap if you
want to hit him up there.I am at sports RV as well,
(06:26):
all right, seven one three twoone two five seven ninety The phone number
like I mentioned, and the tweetsthere as well. We got a lot
of stuff to get to. Trey'sgonna bring us some headlines at ten thirty.
Uh, I'm gonna be honest withyou, because people were inquiring,
uh now that I was back,if I was going to do miss Connections.
I looked up miss connections. Itwas my full intention to do the
(06:47):
segment today, but they're just weren'tenough of them. There weren't any quality
ones. Actually didn't find a singlequality one. And I don't know what's
going on with Craigslist's misconnection section, but there was. It's basically a wastelam.
Now maybe they got rid of allthe spambots and then that's why I
couldn't find it anymore. So nomisconnections today, but we will have some
(07:08):
headlines, and of course we aregoing to talk some Houston sports, the
Texans in free agency. If youhave not heard Aaron Wilson with the report
with Channel two that Sakwan Barkley isapparently very interested in being a Houston Texan,
they do need right the only runningback on the roster right now to
my knowledge is Damian Pierce. DarryOgombawale is a free agent and Devin Singletary
(07:31):
is a free agent, and wellbased on Damian Pierce is twenty twenty three
I don't know that they There's asuper high confidence level in the running back
corps right now for the Houston Texan, so they're gonna need to make a
move there. You also had anESPN analyst kind of like a mock draft
free agency style tabbing a running backto sign with the Houston Texans, which
(07:56):
one was that we'll get to thatlater on. So we're going to talk
about that Rockets. I don't knowhow big we're gonna get into them.
They continue to play poorly. Theylost to the Phoenix Suns. They're losing
to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Theyplay the Suns again tonight at eight o'clock.
They're nine and a half point underdogsin that one as they continue to
slip and slide down the Western Conferencestandings now twenty five and thirty four on
(08:18):
the season. But I think weare going to talk about the Houston Astros
today. They have another game inWest Palm Beach. I think it is
they're taking on the Cardinals. Isthat right? Okay? I guess I
should know this, but yeah,Spring training twelve oh five start Rockets taking
on the Saint Louis Cardinals. Ido know that Christian Javier is getting the
(08:41):
start for the Astros, so that'lldefinitely be something to keep an eye on.
And I also do know that SpencerArraghetti is going to be pitching a
live bullpen session today because he wantsto stay on schedule. Also scheduled to
pitch for the Houston Astros Rafael Montero, Josh Hater, and Brian Abray.
(09:03):
You, so that's why you wantto keep it here on Sports Talk seven
ninety. We got that for youcoming up at eleven to fifty, starting
coverage twelve oh five. First pitchhere on Sports Talk seven ninety Christian Javier
getting the start, and that leadsme to the question marks we continue to
discuss and think about as we continueto get ready for this Astros twenty twenty
(09:26):
four campaign. And it's kind ofbeen up and down for me. I
don't know about you in the waythat you've been feeling about this whole off
season, because it started off aboutas bitter as it could. This is
really I mean, after twenty nineteengetting to Game seven, I would put
that as a lower low than thefeeling after the result of the twenty twenty
(09:46):
three season, although at least innineteen that was also before the scandal had
broken, and you were World Serieschampions in twenty seventeen, but nineteen I
will still maintain, possibly until toget to my grave, at least in
this Astros era. That was thestrongest team that they've had, but they
didn't win it. And then nowafter this year, I guess it's a
(10:07):
good question, actually, if youhave an opinion on that, was the
feeling and the sting of the lossof twenty nineteen greater than the sting of
the losses of losing because you didn'tmake the World Series. Honestly, the
Astros team wasn't great. We wereshocked that they won the division. We
were shocked at not shocked, Iguess because this team, in this run
(10:28):
that they've been on and making sevenstraight ALCS isn't isn't necessarily gonna shock anybody
with how great they are. Butthe expectation level was low. They backed
into winning the American League West andthen they made it to the ALCS,
and the starting pitching was shaky andhow Twove saves their bacon in Arlington and
(10:48):
you gotta go home and win onegame, but you lose. And it's
not only that you lost. It'swho you lost too. It's that you
couldn't win at home, which youcouldn't do all season long, and then
you got to sit there and watchTexas, right, you gotta watch Cowboys
fans win a World Series. That'swhat it boils down to. That's it.
That's why it hurt. That's whyI didn't feel good, and that's
why I had a bat off season. That's why it started about as low
(11:11):
as it could get as it hasduring this era, and also of course
much lower than it would be inlike twenty you know, twelve, eleven,
thirteen, when they were losing abunch of games, because you had
to know, they're like, okay, you lost one hundred and eleven games.
Yeah, my optimism, my optimismlevel is low. But I also
you didn't care. You care aboutthe Astros. Now you care that they
(11:33):
lost to the Texas Rangers, andhe had to go watch him beat up
on an eighty four win team toget a World Series ring. So I
started off extremely low, started tofeel a little bit better because time heals
all wounds, and then come springtraining, my optimum optimism level went super
high. And then now I'm justkind of like maybe coming back down to
(11:56):
somewhere in the middle. Because ChristianJavier is throwing today, I'm wondering how
that's gonna look. Frobert Valdez wasnot good in his spring training debut.
If you're if you hadn't heard,it was an inning and a third and
he faced eleven batters, seven ofthem reached base, and he gave up
three earned runs. Not good, not encouraging, not feeling great about it.
(12:20):
I'm not super worried, Okay, just between you know, maybe I'm
kind of very worried, but Iwould have fuck a lot better if you
had have thrown two scoreless. Let'sjust put it that way. Not in
panic mode. But after all theoffseason talk about him and turning it around
and a losing weight, and Idon't know how much of the weight he
(12:41):
lost counts with the hair extensions hetook off and all that type of stuff,
and then to see him throw aninning in a third and get knocked
around yesterday wasn't great. And ChristianJavier another question mark coming in Justin Verlander
is expected to throw a bullpen today, so that's good news, but also
we don't know if he's gonna beready for opening Day. And so I'm
(13:05):
kinda from from riding high of springtraining and you sit in front of Dana
Brown and Joe Spot and hear themtalk about this team. They're super optimistic,
guys that are energetic, they're they'rehappy, all that type of stuff.
So I was feeling good. NowI'm coming down to earth a little
bit. I think Frommerveldez has mebrought down just a peg. So how
you feeling about the Astros? Doyou have any bold predictions about what's gonna
(13:28):
happen in the season. We'll talkabout that as well. Of course,
as I mentioned, we'll talk someTexans spring Texan not spring training, Texans
free agency. H a former Astrospitcher is butt hurt over something that happened
in spring training. We'll get tothat as well. And you on the
phone lines if you want to talk. We're out here at Onion Creek Cafe
(13:48):
in the Heights. It's the hTown Chili throw Down. You want to
get in the mix. Seven toone three two one two five seven ninety
is the phone number. Seven onethree two one two five seven ninety.
Also tweets to at sports r V. It is the sports RV Show.
That's what I'm calling it because that'swhat it is. With you until eleven
fifty Astro Spring training coverage out hereat Onion Creek in the Heights, and
(14:09):
we'll be back after the short breakingSimon and Garfunel, I don't know,
(14:35):
man, I just feel like theworld needs more Simon and Garfunkle. Did
you is that you? Is thatwhat happened when you woke up today?
Yeah? It was like you knowsyour teeth, You're getting ready for the
day, You're putting on your outof your outfit, and you're like,
you know what, we need moreSimon and garf We need a bridge over
troubled water. If you know whatI'm saying. Okay, I guess I
do know what you're saying. Thename of one of their albums, well,
(14:56):
I'm aware. Well I thought itwas a song or is it both?
It's I think it's a at both. Okay, wonderful, All right
back here on the Sports r VShow. Is what we're calling it.
It is Space City Saturday. Ofcourse, Dan Matthews, your normal host,
Ros Virial. We'll just call itfill in work out here at Onion
Creek in the heights. You wantto get in seven one three two one
two five seven ninety is the phonenumber open and available, wide open.
(15:20):
You want to be the you wantto be the first person to call me
as I'm filling in for Dan andthe one off return edition of the Sports
r V Show. You can dothat at seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. So big ash, Well, okay, let me just
qualify this Big Astros game as faras spring training goes, coming up at
(15:43):
twelve oh five, first pitch hereas they take on the Saint Louis Cardinals.
Because I mentioned who's pitching and theyou're gonna get a look at today
Christian Javier. You're also gonna getRafael Montero. We can get to him
in a second. Josh Hater,I feel like, I mean it's our
is uh, you know, wego down the worry list and what we're
(16:03):
worried about here in spring training.Of course, you's probably start off with
spring training, then we go tosome spots in the line. I mean
spring I was the starting rotation. Then you go into I don't know,
some middle relief I think is somethingthat people are concerned about as well,
and then probably a couple of spotsin the lineup to Jeremy Paniaz the whatever
if we made the reverse list thingsyou're least worried about. I think two
(16:29):
names come to mind when it comesto the Houston Astros. For me,
it's probably I don't know what orderyou'd put them in, ord On Alvarez
and then Josh Hater, and youronly question for them, you would it
would just be relative health. Aslong as they're healthy and ready to go.
Josh Hater is gonna lock down theback end of this bullpen. Jord
On Alvarez is gonna go out therebat number two, by the way,
(16:51):
which I'm on board with. Uh. I haven't uh talked to much of
you about that. If you wantto get in on that, we can
talk about that as well. Battingnumber two, yord On Alvarez, as
long as he's healthy, he's gonnago out there and be one of the
best hitters on the planet. Whichreminds me, actually, Trey Uh.
You at sports r M seven nineyou said you'd rather bet yord On Alvarez
(17:14):
bat fourth, but I wasn't sureif you were being sarcastic, No,
it wouldn't it make sense though, like he's a power hitter, and if
everybody's batting ahead of you that's onbases, you could get more runs out
of it. But I get battinghim second, you know, well,
you get more plate appearances. He'sone of the best hitters in baseball.
That's chess. What also, Trey, do you know who led the Houston
Astros and on base percentage last year? Was it? Uh, yord On
(17:37):
Alvarez? It was jord On Alvarez. That's a good thing. If he's
getting on base, that means he'sgonna be on base and scoring more runs
for Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman andJosea Bray You jose A Bray you,
what was its offensive season like lastyear? It wasn't great towards it got
better towards the end. It wasterrible. Do you know how many runs
he drove in ninety? That's notall he that nineties pretty good for a
(18:03):
guy who met you. I'm saying, jose Bray you yeah, I say,
uh, oh, okay, I'msorry, We're We're all It's okay.
Kyle Tucker led the American League withone hundred and twelve runs batted in
and that's because guys like yord OnAlvarez were in front of him. I
would if I had to guess.I don't know this for a fact,
but I'm gonna guess, out ofthe one hundred and twelve runs batted in,
(18:23):
probably one of the ones he knockedin most, if not number one,
gjeord On Alvarez, because he wasalways on base in front of Kyle
Tucker and and yord On bat thirdall of last season, so you're really
only most of last season. Anyways, he had a couple of spots where
he came back from injury and hewas like eighth or whatever, but for
the most part he batted third. So you're moving him up one spot.
(18:45):
Number one, you're getting him ahandful of extra plate appearances, and also
you're getting him on base more asa table setter, because a lot of
times last year, Jeremy Peney wasbatting second, and it's like, oh,
Wolf, you got a bat himthird so he can get more guys
on base. Well, Jeremy Penneywas going out there and striking out on
breaking balls and hitting like two whatever. So I mean you're moving him your
(19:06):
two hitters going from I don't evenknow who it was primarily last year,
I would have to I think itwas Alex Bregman for a lot of it.
And Alex Bregman does get on basea lot as well, but you're
getting more plate appearances, you're gettinghim on base, and that's also allowing
him to get driven in by betterhitters rather than switching him around. So
to me, it's beneficial that way, and it's something that's all around the
(19:30):
major leagues. Freddie Freeman bat secondin one hundred and sixty one games last
year. Show Tawny or Mike Trout, depending on the health of either,
normally bat number two for the LosAngeles Angels. Aaron Judge bat's second for
the New York Yankees. I mean, this is the way that it goes.
But anyways, those are like thethings that I'm least worried about as
(19:51):
far as the Houston Astros coming upand in this spring training. But today
you are gonna get like I said, re to the fact that this is
just a spring training game. It'sMarch second, this season doesn't start for
three four weeks. You get startingChristian Javier guaranteed to pitch today. Rafael
(20:14):
Montero, which we'll see what happensto him. I think he holds a
lot of the keys of to howthings can go, especially in the middle
relief of the Houston Astros. ThenJosh Hater and then Brian to bray you.
And then how about this for afreaking lineup leading off at second base,
Jose Altuve, jord and Alvarez battingsecond, Bregman, then Tucker did
(20:37):
a bray you batting fifth, ChasMcCormick in center, bat sixth, Jeremy
Pania batting seventh. That shortstop TreyCabbage a hot name right now and someone
that I just know for a factthe organization is very high on in his
possibilities of being kind of a latebloomer that they could pick up and get
(20:59):
some production out of He's But TreyCabbage is in the left field for the
Astros today, Victor Karattini is thecatcher. Christian Javier on the mound for
the Astros. I mean that isthat's a lineup that you could see on
a given day in the regular season. So you got a regular season lineup,
got Christian Javier on the hill, and then three of your most important
relievers in for varying reasons on thehill today for the Houston Astros. So
(21:26):
it's a big one and I'll beinterested. And just like what the Fromer
Valdez start, it doesn't it matters, but it doesn't matter, right,
it's not a big deal that fromerValdez went out and threw it inning in
a third and gave up three earnedruns. He also did say afterwards yesterday
that he's he's only going about fortyor fifty percent in terms of intensity for
(21:52):
his first start. He's not rampingit up, he's not put it giving
it as all. This is justall part of a process. So if
he went and got hit, hesays, don't be concerned and he's gonna
be fine. But I'm curious tosee how Rafael Montero looks. I'm curious
to see how he looks in theseason because we know what happened last year.
Last year was an abject disaster lastyear as dra was over five.
(22:15):
By the way, his career atERA is like four to seventy one,
So that's a concern. They signedhim off a big deal off of a
career year. I mean every numberthat he could possibly have went down that
year and they signed him to thebig what was it, three year,
thirty four million dollars or was iteven more than that contract to Rafael Montero
highest paid non closer in baseball,or at least he was last year.
(22:41):
I don't know how much that holdsthis year, but there wasn't a big
offseason for relief pitching, so Idon't know exactly. He's probably still in
the mix, let's put it thatway, with that big deal that he
signed for the Astros. So hewas terrible last year. I mean,
he was a disaster early on,and then he stabilized to like solid enough.
(23:02):
It was actually pretty good in theplayoffs until his last appearance where he
gave up a runner two. Ican't remember exactly what it was, but
I think that was the first timehe gave up a run all postseason.
He had a decent era then. But Rafael Montero certainly someone to keep an
eye because if you can just gethim to be okay, you give him
just what he was in the secondhalf of the season, where he was
(23:23):
throwing around like under a three pointfive e er, that's all you need
because he's your sixth inning guy.Because wherever you're gonna put in seventh,
I've been saying Pressley because Brian Abrady, quite frankly, he is just a
better reliever. So Presley a brayyou and hater, and then you throw
in Montero in the mix and he'ssolid. You just need your picture to
(23:45):
go five innings and the game's basicallyover if you get any semblance of a
lead, So not a huge youdon't wanna you don't wanna over sell the
gravity of Raffael Montaro going out thereand trying to get three outs, but
also be nice to see him justget a quick one, two, three
and then be done with it.Okay, we're gonna take another break here
on the Sports r V show,Ross vir Real with you from Onion a

fantastic chili. And they were somereally good competitors, and well you had

last probably headline segment together, andfor that, I'm gonna try not to
get too emotional. Number two though, tell the folks where are you moving,
Trey? What's going on in thelife of Trey Campbell. So I'm
(26:21):
moving to Austin, Texas. I'mgonna go try do comedy. Okay.
You know, I thought you aredoing comedy. I am doing comedy,
but try and trying to make it. Yeah, I'm gonna try and make
it. Okay. Cool. CanI have a room in your mansion if
you make it? Yeah? Yeah? Who wing dedicated to? Wow?
(26:41):
No, I want to live there. I don't want to dedicated. Oh
okay, Well we'll figure it outwhen we get there. Okay. So
no promise is what you're saying. No, I mean, obviously the odds
are against me. I mean,I'll clean the pool all I do,
the lawn and all that stuff. Please don't clean the pool because the wife
I'm with I try and get withyou, because you know, no,
(27:02):
she wouldn't do that. I wouldnever. I would never break our trust
like that trap. I didn't thinkyou would. But you know how pool
guy dynamics go. No, Idon't. Well, yeah, you have
to be like the hot young Commandaboy. But I'm neither of those things.
So we're good. All right.Well, anyways, on that note,
but yeah, thank you so muchRoss for calling me today and us
(27:26):
doing this. Well, I'm glad. I'm glad you're here, and I'm
glad you're stuff with two other peoplein a very tiny studio. Yeah.
No, they're good people. Ilike Adam and then David. All right,
go ahead, what we What dowe have David? What do we
have for sports headlines today? So? Uh, this just came through the
wire. Yes, it involves ourfavorite Heisman winning Texas A and M quarterback,
(27:48):
favorite Texas animal. I think Ican only think of one. Yep,
what's going on with Johnny Manziel? So Johnny Football has told everybody on
Twitter or x that he will notbe attending the Heisman ceremony as one of
the former Heisman winners until Reggie Bushis given his Heisman back. Hmmm.
(28:12):
Does he think that anybody cares?Yeah? I don't. I think he
doesn't show up to the I don'tthink anybody cares. But you know,
he just couldn't scrape together airfare.Yeah, I think that. You know,
Johnny's kind of fell in off, fallen on hard times, and you
know it's hard hard to get touh, New York City. I guess
he could fly Spirit if he wantedto fly to what if? Could you
(28:34):
imagine being on a Spirit flight. There's people brawling and roll twenty in row
twenty three because somebody's blasting their theirboombox, and there's you know, somebody
shooting up heroin in row thirty seven, and then you say, hey,
what's up. It's Johnny Manzil. You're on the Spirit Airlines. He'd have
to put on like some kind ofdisguise like sunglasses and stuff. He wouldn't
(28:55):
want to be spotted on a SpiritAirline flight. Well, Johnny Manziel is
hard to miss. I mean,he's got like a weird face he looks.
But then again, you know he'sgot a weird face. He kind
of looks like he kind of lookslike he rides horses and he races horses
for a living. He looks likehes So he looks like a jockey,
(29:17):
yeah, a little bit, buthe's got jockey face. Yeah, he's
got jockey face. I don't know. Do you think, by the way,
that Reggie Bush needs his Heisman back. Yeah. I mean, honestly,
it's a trophy. As Rob Banfordwould say, it's just a hunk
of metal. He's still always goingto be the Heisman winner. Yeah,
you can't take that away from him. I mean it's a stupid if,
(29:38):
like they investigated to all those Heismanwinners, they would find something probably equal
to give him give away the Heismanfor all of them. So it's stupid.
I think. Yeah, they shouldgive Reggie his Heisman back. I
mean, I guess, but therules were broken and he got caught.
It is what it is. Ithink at the end of the day,
(30:00):
didn't he give it up? Yeah? And now, Yeah, I don't
know if they seized it. Idon't know if there was a whole of
the whole, like there was aseizing of his property or anything, like
somebody who showed up and repoted it. Did that work exactly? Yeah?
Does Reggie Bush always have residency atthe Heisman house though? Does he have
like keys? Yes, that's agreat question. And also, I mean,
(30:22):
he doesn't even need his Heisen backbecause he stole it from Vince Young
in the first place. That's true. They should have just gave it to
Vince Young. Igie. Okay,Reggie Bush had an electric career at USC.
He was one of the most dynamiccollege running backs of all time.
But the dude was popping off forlike two hundred and fifty yards against Fresno
State and stuff. This was ahuge I don't hear it. This was
a huge point of debate between meand my friend Ashton when we were in
(30:45):
fifth grade. I would really sayVince Young. He would always say Reggie
Bush. Well, the problem withVince Young is he couldn't rack up all
the yards, like, for example, when Johnny Manziel was racking up all
those yards with Texas A and M, like they were in dogfight with like
Louisiana Tech. Yeah, and sohe got to rack up like four hundred
and fifty yards passing and two hundredyards rushing, and but Vin Schunk like
(31:07):
they were up like fifty six tothree by the second quarter in every game.
So he didn't really rack up themany yards. Yeah. That that
was. That was a hell ofa year in football. Yeah, all
right, anyways, what else yougot track? So a lot of stuff's
going on, some stuff going onin the hot stove and baseball, is
it burning hot? Is it pipinghot the stove? Yeah? How about
(31:30):
Matt Chapman signing with the Giants forthree years? You were going to say
forty nine ers. I was goingto say forty nine. That's okay.
I do that all the time too. But Matt Chapman is off the market.
He'll be signing with the San FranciscoGiants on a three year, fifty
four million dollar contract. The Giantshave had a sneaky good offseason, So
(31:53):
look out for the San Francisco Giantsand the end. Okay, this year?
Is that your Is that your sleeperpick in the National League? Yeah,
that's my sleeper pick to at leastmake the playoffs. I don't know
if they're gonna win anything, butlook out for the Dodgers and the Padres
in the division. I mean itwas a tough division last year. Wasn't
there another team in the mixed DiamondYeah, the Diamondbacks are very good,
(32:16):
and then the Brewer is gonna begood. The Cubs are going to be
improved. I don't know about theBrewers. The Brewers might go on a
fire sale. Well that's true, but that's right they traded Uh yeah,
Patrick Corbyn I'm getting my Corbyn's mixedup. Yeah, it's easy to do
that. There's Patrick Corbyn, there'sCorbyn Martin, and then there isn't uh
(32:38):
Corbyn Burns and then Corbyn Martin wasthe Astros prospect that they traded to the
Diamondbacks. Yeah, that's correct. This is very confusing Corbyn's Why are grown
adults in this day and age namingtheir child Corbin? Yeah? Grow up?
You know you can't have that name. You got to have that name
(33:00):
your whole life. Like it'd belike naming your son Doug. You have
like a little baby named Doug. How's that gonna work? You can't?
Baby? Sounds like like a substance. Like it's like, you know,
like if you if you glue somethingand then there's some residue. It's like,
yeah, that's the Corbyn. Yeahthat's I can't really respond. That's
(33:21):
true. All anyways? What elseyou got trace? So, unfortunately I
have some sad news headlines on No, you're familiar with Richard Lewis, right,
Yes, I am. He dieda couple of passed away recently,
So yes, r I p touh Richard Lewis? You knew him from
(33:45):
Curb Your Enthusiasm. No, Iknew him as a mediocre comedian in the
nineties. What do you mean ina medio he was. He was good
on on Curb Your Enthusiasm, remember, Yeah, But before that he was
just you know what, I'm notgoing to charge. I'm not gonna speak
ill of the dead. I'm gonnastand. Yeah, don't speak ill of
the dead. Ross Sorry. RichardLewis is no longer with us, and
(34:05):
uh may he rest? You know? And uh, are you gonna play
any sad songs or what's going onhere? Yeah? Music? I got
one, I got one. Theproduction value is okay, here we go.
I was waiting, Oh, you'replaying the live version. That's the
only one we got. I don'tthink that's accurate. I think we have
(34:27):
a non live one. I thinkyou always accidentally pulled the live one.
Aren't you gonna miss this? Yes, the the high production val value stylings
of one Trey Campbell rip to RichardLewis. He made a huge contribution to
the comic zeitgeist. Oh okay,in what way? You know? He
(34:50):
was on carib Your Enthusiasm? Hewas on a few episodes of Curb Yeah,
Well, I guess he was almostalmost every episode Where do You Come
Down on Curb by the Way,Tray, it's one of the best.
I love shows that are all improv. I like that it's all improv,
but I just don't think they're thatgood at improving. Yeah, and they're
not good, you know, Likea great all improv show is like Reno
nine one one. Yeah, that'strue, or it's always weird, it's
(35:13):
always sunny? Is they do alot of really great improv. Hell,
who's linings anyway? They do betterimpact. I don't like how that guy
on whose line is it anyway?Always licks the camera. He licks the
camera. Yeah, I was watchingthat show with my girlfriend and her ex
that still lives there. And wait, old Todd, stop the show.
(35:38):
Okay, you're hanging out with yourex girlfriend, your girlfriend, your current
girlfriend, and she lives with herex boyfriend that she broke up with to
get to get to get with you. Yeah for now? Is that awkward?
Oh? Yeah? Is it weird? Yeah? I mean, do
you guys not look each other inthe eye or do you stare at or
(35:58):
is it is it like when twodogs to get in a room, you
stare him down and try to bethe alpha dog. Do you like nip
at his neck? Do you bitehim? No? Not usually. I
usually just kind of like say, hey, what's up, and then I
just go into her room and justkind of like us, well, I
don't need hey, hey, wedon't need to know what you do when
you go into her room. Right, But the Family show, it's very
(36:19):
it's very it's it's it's the worstross. It's very awkward. So he
wait, he's not. Y'all aren'tdoing stuff while he's there in the next
room, right, I can't confirmthat sucks? Yes, okay, we're
gonna take a break here. Thankyou, Trey uh In. Peace to
(36:40):
Richard Lewis, I'm glad you broughtthat on as one of the top sports
headlines of the day. I reallyappreciate you for that. Anytime, we're
gonna take a break, Martin, you're on hold. We'll get to you
next. You want to get in, Martin is the first caller to get
in on the return of the Sportsr V Show. You want to get
in, you can. It's onlya one off, so time is limited.
(37:00):
We're off at eleven fifty for Astrospring training. You want to get
in seven one three two one twofive seven ninety the phone number seven one
three two one two five seven ninetyback in a minute here on the sports
RV show Next Time. Why arewe playing because Harry Underwood before he cheats?
(37:42):
I mean, it's fine, becauseit's curious because of the you know,
the relationship dynamic between Yeah and I'mokay, so this is gonna happen
to my car? So you're worriedthat this guy is going to key up
your car? Yeah? Because so, so let me get this right.
So you head over to this younglady's apart apartment. Is it a duplex?
Are we talking about a town home? Uh? Yeah, it's an
(38:06):
apartment, okay, And you're sittingon the couch and you're watching TV with
your new girlfriend, getting all coziedup. You guys, would you say
you were watching curb? We werewatching? Uh, we were watching We
were watching Whose line is it?Anyway? Whose life is it? Anyway?
That's right? Somehow that licks thecamera on Who's Okay? I don't
(38:29):
even remember that. Actually, Iused to watch a lot of Who's Line
it anyway? That sounds vaguely familiar. Yeah, And as you're sitting there
getting cozied up with your new woman, the ex boyfriend of her as they
lived together. Correct, she brokeup with him to get with you,
and you're in the same room watchingthe same show. Pretty much. Wow,
(38:54):
this is fascinating. Can you livestream this? Um? Yeah?
I mean you you guys side ateach other, Like, what's how cordial
are you with this guy? Imean he's cool? Uh, we're cool.
I mean I don't Yeah, you'recool. You just say when you
go to your car, all theairs out of your tires. Yeah,
that's what I worry the most about. Okay, but you know, like,
(39:15):
uh, we all met and tokill Tony Lyne and uh wait a
minute, she was with him wheny'all met. Yeah. Oh, I
thought we were just gonna be homies, but you know, all three of
us, but she just kind ofyou thought it was a three company situation.
It turned out to be a backstabbingsituation. You can't backstab somebody if
(39:36):
you don't know him. Yeah, right, but you know, she said,
she she I don't know. Shejust really we really just hit it
off. Okay, we do comedy, All three really do comedy. Anyways.
A wait, all three of youdo you. Now this sounds like
a sketch waiting to happen. Yeah, I think, I think so we
all three do comedy. This ishilarious. Uh okay, all right,
(40:00):
Trey, Well there you go.That's Trey Ross. Yeah, back with
you on the Sports RV show.Seven one three, two one two five
seven ninety is the phone number.I wanted to thank Matt Thomas apparently for
listening, uh, because he justtweeted honestly at Sports RV's lack of appreciation
of Curb is worse than any ofhis sports takes. Now, this is
(40:21):
like I like Curb. I justdon't love Curb like some people do because
I just don't think the acting isthat good. I don't think they like
if you're gonna have no script andimprov, you need to be really good
at improving. And I just don'tthink they're a lead at it. That's
all I'm saying. So that's justmy opinion. But I've tried to get
into it multiple times. I've givenit the old college try because I know
that a lot of people really reallylike it in it, but it's just
(40:44):
not my jam, all right anyways? Uh, seven one three two one
two five seven ninety the phone number. We are broadcasting live from Onion Creek
Cafe to h Town Chili Throwdown, starting at one o'clock here and then on
the radio in about an hour. We're about an hour away from the Astros
spring training beginning. Christian Hobvier onthe mound. Major League looking lineup for
(41:07):
the Houston Astros coming up as well. Let's go to the phone lines real
quick. Couple of you on hold. I appreciate you for getting in.
Let's start it off with Martin inAngleton. Appreciate you getting in. Martin
in a way, I miss yourterrible calls on a Saturday. Go ahead.
Yeah, I hate to see Treyleaving, you know. I remember
he told us over the air thatone of his girlfriends was a furry and
(41:30):
that was a trip, I tellyou. But anyway, I was that
I called about trade. I talkedabout the tray cabbage trade. I think
that that could be a very sneakytrade. He's had problems striking out a
lot in the past, and Ithink the hitting instructors are going to adjust
(41:52):
his swing and I think that cabbage, it could be a really sneaky good
trade for the Astros. I thinkhe could really be really good at the
dish for the Astros, and Ithink Cabbage Um would be really He's coming
(42:12):
to Houston. I think he's gonnabe He's coming to Houston very hungry.
I was waiting for the joke.I was waiting for the other other shoe
to drop, Martin. I appreciateyou, all right, thank you.
He's gonna come in hungry. That'shilarious. Triple A. Last year he
was really good. Now, firstof all, one thing you have to
remember is that Trey Cabbage was madeavailable by the Angels organization number one,
(42:40):
so you want to temper your expectationsa little bit. Number two. He's
about to turn twenty seven in May. And I don't know if you know
this, but you know it's notnormally a ripe age for hot young prospects
at the age of twenty seven inbaseball. But but but last year in
(43:04):
the Pacific Coast League where the balltends to fly out, four hundred and
seventy four played appearances, nine tousseventy five ops, He had thirty home
runs, and he also had thirtytwo stolen bases. He only got caught
stealing three times, so he's comingoff with thirty thirty season at Triple A.
(43:24):
That's nothing to sneeze at, evenif it is in the PCL.
He only got caught yet, heonly got caught stealing the three times and
the band is warming up here atOnion Cree. Okay, so that sounds
really good. And also the Astrosjust when we were around spring training or
I just heard some buzz about TreyCabbage that that they have some high hopes
(43:45):
for him. They think they mighthave a diamond in the rough on their
hands and if they can just tweaka couple of things with his approach and
get him to not strike out asmuch, which he did one hundred and
forty two times up a A uh, that they feel like they have they
really have something on their hands here. So we'll see see if he makes
(44:06):
the team. I don't know thathe is going to outright, but there
is an opportunity for him. Heis in the lineup today, So uh,
I'm keeping my optimism level high forTrey Cabbage. We'll see, because
if the Astros founds, it's basicallyfound money with Trey Cabbage. So there's
certainly one of the things we're keepingan eye on here in spring of training.
(44:28):
He can also play some first base, uh, and out left field.
He plays the outfield. So ifyou're thinking, like jose O Bray,
you isn't gonna start and play everysingle game at first base, whether
he's gonna get some days off inDH here and there, Trey Cabbage is
certainly a candidate to fill in therewhen he can. All right, seven
one three two one two five sevenninety the phone number. Let's keep it
going on the phone lines. Johnis calling in. What's up John?
(44:52):
Hey, good morning? Uh.First off, yeah, Trey Cabbage.
And follow up to what you're saying, uh, you know, like when
you read Bleacher and some of theseother periodicals, they're they're just really high
on what, you know, hispotential. I think the one thing the
Astros are really good at his playerdevelopment. And you know, if we
they we've found uh, I mean, look at what we've done with some
(45:14):
pictures that have come here that we'rejust uh, you know so and so
and then we turn them into stars. And uh, you know, Trey,
I think if anybody could do it, it would be the Astros.
And a lot of people are sayingalready that he's the heir of parent to
bray you. So, I mean, I agree with you. I think
it'll be interesting to watch and seehow this develops. But I think if
anybody could do it, it's it'sthe Astros. And I was telling Trey
(45:37):
he has great material for a sitcom, you know, the situation that he's
in, and uh, you know, I wish him a lot of luck
in Austin and and all of that. So I'm always glad to hear him
on the shows and anyways, Ijust wanted to chime in on that.
All Rightks, thanks a lot,John, appreciate you know what. I'm
wishing Trey the best as well. And this this does seem like something out
(46:00):
of a sitcom where Trey's sitting thereon the couch watching Who's lighted anyway with
his lady and the and the guythat she broke up with in order to
get with him. That is correct. That is exactly what happened, and
we're just kind of navigating through itright now. Yeah, but I love
her. Do you guys make alot of eye contact, no talk to
each other? Yeah? Sometimes hegave me a water before I left,
(46:23):
Uh, yesterday didn't It didn't tastelike bleach did it? No, it
tasted fine? Okay, really trulywe're navigating through it. But uh,
okay, Dame Lindsay, we're justwe just love a lot, yeah,
you, we just love each othera lot. How long have you all
been together? About a month?Okay? Are you already? You have?
(46:45):
You already dropped the L word onher all the time? You love
her? Yeah? Pretty much? When you when you hang up, when
you tell her good night, doyou say I love you? Honey?
Yeah? She's coming to town today, okay today, Yeah, she'll be
here today and we're probably gonna I'mgonna do comedy tonight at the Secret Group
at ten pm. All right.I don't know if I'm gonna be up
(47:06):
for that, but I might tryto make it tray all right, but
she'll be I got an early morning, you know, the Manchester Derby's at
night. Are you going to thePhoenix? Hey? Hey? No free
plugs? Okay? Are you goingto the Enix? I'm thinking about it.
You want to go? Yeah,I'm gonna go, Oh you are
for sure? Yeah, I'm gonnawear it because it's the Derby. Yeah,
the Derby Derby and the Kun Yeah, the thing is, though,
(47:27):
I got I don't know if Iwant to get there all the way.
You have to get there early. It is gonna be a big crowd.
Yeah, you gotta get there atseven. I don't know if I'm gonna
do that. Yeah, okay,we'll talk off air about this. Figure
it out. We'll figure it out. Yeah, is your uh? Is
your lady a Manchester City fan aswell? I don't think she knows anything
about soccer. Oh okay, soyou're gonna teach her. Yeah, she's
a Dodger fan. What Yeah, she's from California. What's she doing in
(47:52):
Austin. She's trying to do comedy. He's one of those California Austin transplants.
Yeap, Oh my god. I'mtrying to get her. I'm gonna
get her a new lanyard though shehas a Dodgers lanyard that kisses me off
every time I see it. Allright, well, we can introduce her
to the you make her a citizen, yeah city O. Yeah, yeah,
(48:13):
we'll figure it out. All right. We're gonna take a quick break
here. Bill is on hold. We'll get to him. Uh, anybody
else wants to get in seven onethree, two one two five seven ninety
our number one of the Comeback Edition, one off of the Sports r V
shows and the books. Our numbertwo is coming up. Phone lines open
if you want to get in sevenone three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two fiveseven ninety tweets at Sports r V and
(48:37):
I'm gonna be addressing this Matt Thomastweet when we come back as well back
in a minute. Here all theSports r V show on Sports Talk seven.
Oh you be what that is happening? And now Ross Via REALXVI Real

coverage, non stop Houston Sport. This is the Sports r V Show with
(49:22):
Ross Via Real all right, Numbertwo of the Triumphant. It's not really
a triumphant return if what do youcall it? Like the comeback Tour,
what do you have? What doyou call it? When when George Strait
pretends he's doing one more show atthe Rodeo, this is a farewell show,
the farewell show, but already hada farewell show. See this is
(49:45):
what I become everything. I hate. Elton John's like on his fifth farewell.
This is kind of like when DaleJunior got all those concussions and Jeff
Gordon came back to drive the eightyeight car for like a couple of races
and then he retired. Okay, that ross is Dan Matthews can cuss.
No, I don't remember that becauseI don't follow NASCAR. That's on me.
(50:06):
I'm sorry, Trey. That's okay, I appreciate it. No,
I think Dan Matthews is just Idon't know what's going on on Dan.
No, he's just off. He'soff. He needed a couple of days
off. That's okay. The Saturdayshow can be a grind. No,
I think he's on vacation. Hewas out yesterday, sleep under the desk.
It is a grind. Ross,I know, I know. Are
you going and getting the studio andmake out with your girlfriend too? We
(50:27):
did do that? Do you rememberthat? No? I heard it through
the grape vine. You know, sources close to me said, you guys
were making out making out in thestudio. Doug Pike say that. Well,
I got no comment on that.Yeah, it was Doug. But
that's an extremely unprofessional tray. Butthat's okay, Yeah, all right,
what are they gonna do? Whatare they gonna do? Fire you?
(50:50):
All right, welcome back to theseSports v show. Oh Man with you
until eleven fifty. Uh you wantto get in fall lines are open at
seven one three two one two fiveseven ninety seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety We continueto broadcast live from Onion Creek. It
is the sixteenth annual h Town throwDown. Uh. There's gonna be some
(51:13):
great chili starting up from one tosix o'clock. It is the Chili Cookoff.
They're gonna give like first, second, third prizes. They're gonna give
the fan vote two as well. You get a vote if you want to
get out here, try some deliciouschili and drink some cold beers on a
beautiful Saturday. I was here lastyear, and actually here's a little inside
radio from me. If you goto Sports Talk seven nineties Twitter account,
(51:35):
you can see the uh like thesepictures that were taken. They were from
last year. I believe Chris Cordyput these up. It was a much
colder. You can see me likein a sweater and my hands are in
my pockets. Because I'm like shiveringcold if you look at the picture of
me on that tweet. But no, I'm actually just in a polo shirt
today. A little bit warmer outhere. You don't need to pack,
you don't need to get ready forthe chili weather on the chili cookof So
(52:00):
make sure you come out here atOnion Creek Cafe in the Heights, phone
lines open. As I mentioned atseven one three two one two five seven
ninety, We've been talking to someastros. They have the game coming up
at twelve oh five, and it'sit's like, uh, Like I said,
I want to say big game, but I just mean relative to spring
(52:20):
training results don't matter that much. But you've got Christian Haavier throwing today,
also scheduled to pitch, Rafael Montero, Josh Hater, Brian Abrey, you
all those guys for different reasons.I definitely want to get a look at
them on the mound. And thenyou go through today's lineup. It's a
pretty serious, major league looking lineupright now. It's Al two eight leading
(52:43):
off, then jord On, thenBregman, Tucker A Bray, You McCormick,
Pana, Trey Cabbage, who theAstros traded for from the Angels.
Then Victor Karen Karattini is the catcherfor Christian Javier, So that's, you
know, the guy's only gonna bea couple of abs and all that type
of stuff. Make sure you tunein here twelve oh five First Pitch,
Sports Talk seven ninety. I wantto get a look at basically every one
(53:06):
of those names that I just mentioned. So I've been talking about the Astros,
discussing, you know, things thatwere worried about. Bold predictions for
the season. I don't know howbold it is exactly, but I've been
buying in on Jeremy Pania and thechange of the swing. I think he's
gonna have the best offensive career ayear of his career. The rookie season
(53:30):
that he had, he came outlike gangbusters. He hit twenty two home
runs, He was ALCSNVP, hewas World Series MVP, and we're like,
all right, baby, twenty twentythree is coming up. He's going
to be a star. And thenit was, quite frankly large, a
little let down. And then hedidn't hitting hill rum or home run after
July, and then he was terriblein the playoffs and automatic out and you
(53:51):
just had this natural feeling when hecame to the plate that it wasn't gonna
go that well. So I thinkhe's gonna bounce back in to all this
talk about him changing up his stance, changing his approach, getting a clear
mental picture, get just clearing hismind, going out to the farm and
the Dominican Republic and unplugging all thattype of stuff, because I think he
(54:13):
does put a lot of pressure onhimself. I think he does get down
on himself when he's struggling. Andas Joe's spotted put it when we interviewed
him, it's spring training. It'sbecause he cares. He cares a lot,
he tries a lot, he wantsto perform. He's got that that
work ethic within him. So Ithink it is going to bear results hopefully
for this year. All right, seven one three two one two five seven
(54:36):
ninety the phone number, as Imentioned also real quick, I did mention
in the first hour, I wasthinking about bringing back misconnections, but they're
just warning any good ones unfortunately,So not going to bring that back on
the Sports RV Show today. ButKevin in Caroland has rung in here on
the phone lines. Appreciate you gettingin Kevin, what is up for I
see? Nice nice of you toput on the little bridge, I suppose
(55:00):
and come talk to us on Saturdaymorning. I wanted to, I want,
I was, I was hoping to. I'm just gonna be anything goes
Saturday, by the way, ifthat's okay with you, of course,
you know that's the sports RV shots. Anything goes anytime, thank you.
So I was hoping to get somesome recognition and acknowledgment for the advancement of
(55:22):
your career. Ross. I am. I am the one and only uh
uh you know Kevin website photo piningfor Ross to be on the website.
And I'm hoping that that has reallyelevated and advanced your career so much that
I can now come in and workfor nothing as a producer to take trade
(55:45):
place. It was very nice enoughto come out to the lobby on January
second, when it was still closedfor me to pick up my I don't
know, like fifteenth the Kronberg's flagastro flag. You know, are you
stitching together a quilt? Friends andfamily? Customers here and there? You
(56:07):
know, I just win the triviaall the time, and no I don't
google. Sometimes I do, yes, but usually not, I know,
But yeah, I just wanted towanted to throw that out. There're gonna
miss old Tray and his curly littlered locks, but you know, got
to move on. And lastly, what about you. They should have traded
Jalen when they had a chance. And I know I sound like the old
(56:28):
get off my long guy, youknow, but you know, you know,
wearing the fingernail polish and I don'tknow. And also on the other
thing, I don't I don't likethese guys wearing like Lebron wearing the red
shoes when he's playing a team thathas red in their colors and all the
different I know, it's the stylethese days, and it's all cool even
(56:49):
than Taylor's right. Well no,no, I mean maybe the lady bird
of black Converse, you know, let's go back. Anyways, I just
wanted to shout out to you guysreally love the show. And uh so,
anyways, I'll meet you someday,Ross and hopefully you won't be disappointed.
I won't be. Kevin, thanksa lot. I appreciate the sport.
Thank you, thank you for gettingin. That is a good question,
(57:12):
Trey who's the most Who's the bestNBA player of all time that wore
nail polish? Probably? Yeah, that's the first thing that came to mind
for me too. So Jalen Greenis looking to be the second. I
mean, I mean, Dennis Rodman, whatever you want to say about him,
Dudes in the Basketball Hall of Fame? What was he? A five
time NBA champion? Six time?Did he? He never won any with
(57:37):
the Yeah, he won. Hedidn't win with the Spurs, but he
won three with the Bulls and atleast two with the He won two with
the Pistons. I guess. So, yeah, we're talking about a five
time NBA champion. Okay, Sogreatest Dennis Robin won Jalen Green number two.
I mean, do you even knowof any other NBA players that wore
(57:57):
nail polish? Maybe Dwight Howard probablywore narrow polish? Right, Okay,
there's anything wrong with anything wrong withoh lord? All right? Uh So
as far as the Rockets as itis, I don't know, man,
I'm honestly as somebody who I haveto go back into the to the Sports
(58:21):
Talk seven ninety dot com archives anddelete the article where I said the Rockets
should take Jalen Green number two overEvan Mobley. But the reason I argued
for it is because I thought hehad a really high ceiling. You look
at the athletic traits, and youcan see those athletic traits like you would
see that the plays that he canmake where he's like dribbling behind the back,
splitting a double team, goes upand throws down a dune thunder is
dunk like. There's things that hecan do that you just can't teach that
(58:43):
you can't like, you know,I could go out there on a court
and try for ten years and notbe able to do just because of the
athletic gifts and skill level that hehas. But far too often he is
a little too to going meekly tothe basket, not being consistent. Three
point shot has just been terrible thisyear. The catch and shoot numbers are
way worse this year than they werein the previous two years, which is
(59:05):
just bizarre. And I just keptsitting there waiting, taping your toe and
waiting for him to kick the untappedpotential to get tapped, and it just
hasn't been happening consistently enough. Iwould also say, he just turned twenty
two years old. He's still young. He's in his third year of the
NBA. His development was stunted becausehe only got eight games in the G
(59:28):
League. As far as you know, people are like, oh, well,
you know, he's been a profor four years. He had that
year. Yeah, but there wasalso I don't know if you heard this
thing, it was called the COVIDpandemic, and he only played eight games
in the G leaguer. That's wrong. They would think it was seventeen games
in the G League. So hedidn't get a full season there. So
I don't I'm not ready to justcompletely give up, but I would say
(59:52):
my optimism and confidence level is lowerthan it's been in some time when it
comes to Jalen Green. And Idon't care if he wears nail polish or
does whatever I want him to.You know, he can go put on
a put on a gray green wigand I don't care as long as he
goes out there and he efficiently dropstwenty twenty to twenty five points a night.
(01:00:14):
But he's not doing that. He'sunder eighteen h points per game and
having the worst year of his NBAcareer in terms of shooting and field three
point and field goal percentage. That'swhat you want. I was looking for
a third year leap from Jalen Green, not a third year regression, which
(01:00:35):
is what we're getting right now.Okay, time for a quick break.
Only two segments to go. Hereon the special comeback edition of the Sports
RV Show, You want to getin phone lines are open for you at
seven one three two point two fiveseven ninety. Talking some rockets there mentioned.
We're talking some mass shros. Javieron the Hill major league lineup as
well, Montero a bray you haterexpected to throw. Haven't even gotten to
(01:00:59):
the Texan and the free agency stuff. Uh did you see the running back
that was mentioned as being tabbed aspossibly becoming a Houston Texan. There's actually
two of them. We can talkabout that. Anything you want to get
to is and Anything Goes Saturday.Anytime I'm on a microphone, it's and
Anything Goes at seven one three, two one two five seven ninety. It
is a sports RV show broadcasting livefrom Onion Creek Cafe in the Heights.
(01:01:22):
Back in a minute here on SportsTalk seven ninety. Joe here on the
Sports RV show Ros Viria with you. Phone lines open and available at seven
(01:01:43):
one three two one two five sevenninety seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Talking a number ofdifferent things as we go along. Coming
up at twelve oh five it willbe the Astros in action. We'll start
the pregame at eleven fifty. Andlike I said, relative to the fact
that it's just spring training, abig game today, Javier on the hill,
(01:02:04):
You've got a major league lineup. You're on Alvarez batting second L two
V I mean Bregman, Tucker McCormick. It's they got the big dogs in
a lineup today for the Houston Astrosand also Josh Hater, Rafael Montero,
Brian Bray you expected to throw aswell. Phone lines open at seven one
three two one two five seven ninetyif you'd like to get in seven one
(01:02:24):
three two one two five seven ninety. Couple on holds, so let's get
right after it, starting with holdingalong at Jamal and the memorial. What's
up? Jamal? Hey, how'sit going? Guys? Y'all are having
a great Saturday morning? Uh.Before I get to my rockets take I
want to add on to what thecaller was just saying, because I hoped
(01:02:47):
I hopped in the car and hoppedon the show right when he was gone.
I'm gonna say I agree with him. I was just having a conversation
with my men Field about the NBAand with the you know, like how
he was talking about Lebron wearing thered shit, how they loosened up on
the shoe stuff and the city seriesuniforms, and how nobody basically wears a
(01:03:10):
home jersey. I hate the colorrush stuff when it comes to the NBA.
I hate when two teams are playingand they're both in colored uniforms.
It's like no one wear their homewhite anymore. And also it's like everybody
has a black austin In uniform andI'm like, when if that has the
teams that's never had black in theiruniform color, I'm like, why does
(01:03:34):
there a lot of Hawks have ablack jersey? They've been they've been catch
up and muster for a decade. So, uh, that's my little soapbox
on that. But to get tomy rockets take man, I just so
when it comes to the Jam andGreen thing, man, I think they
I was I'll say I was onrecord and Matt Thomas show when we drafted
him, I thought I wanted mobilelywith the number two pick. I just
(01:03:58):
think he's a miss. I think, uh, you got the guy up
there. I can't think of hisname in Toronto that Toronto took after and
I just barn, yeah, Barn, And I just think I think,
you know, we kind of draftedhim with the hopes of being James Hawton's
(01:04:18):
replacement. He's clearly not that. And uh, I would have wished that
we would have got a little bitmore aggressive before the day trade deadline.
And I just think if they wantto try to do I think we kind
of maxed out already this season.Hopefully they can string and wins together and
try to make a play in Butyeah, that's that's my Rockets take,
(01:04:42):
and we need some more shooting inthe future. And I'll get you got
feedback on that, all right,Thanks a lot, Jamal, appreciate you
getting in and thank you for makingthe call. Uh yeah. A couple
of things. The NBA, it'sit's of course right, it's a different
league. It's not your father's NBA. You know. The reason you're seeing
all these different uniforms and the differentshoes and all that type stuff. It's
(01:05:04):
very simple. It's because there ismore money involved, and you have,
I believe, I don't know ifit's I would wonder. I have to
be curious if this is exactly whathappened. If when Nike took over the
jerseys, is that when you startedallowing all these players to wear different color
(01:05:24):
shoes. But yeah, that issomething that came about in the last several
years. You used to have towear a color of a shoe that matched
your team's colors, but now peoplecan wear whatever. And you know that's
also you know, sneaker culture isof course a thing, and everybody's looking
at what you're bringing out these andthe the the Kobe's this, and the
Lebron's that, and the Jordan Whatever's. You know, there's these names and
(01:05:47):
nicknames for everything and all that typeof stuff. And as far as the
jerseys as well, that's because theywant to sell. What's what's better than
selling just two colors of jerseys?Selling four colors of jerseys. You get
that many because there are people outthere who are collectors and they're gonna go
and buy every single version of everythingyou can get so you sell more jerseys,
you're gonna sell more money. Youkind of gotta revamp things, right,
(01:06:09):
It's kind of like freshing, fresheningthings up. Like you know,
you go to to a menu orthe fast food restaurant and they're always got
this special or that special, andyou're coming up with new things, inventing
new ways. It's it's just marketingone on one is give the customers the
reason to come back, give thecustomers a different, more variety of things
to buy, and then you're probablygonna sell more overall volume. And yeah,
(01:06:30):
I'm with you. Like you're watchingthe Indiana Pacers play like the the
Milwaukee Bucks and nobody's wearing yellow andnobody's wearing green, and you're like,
what's going on here? And thenthe court's look all different and all that
type stuff and takes your eyes likefive minutes to adjust to what's going on
in the court. It's a differentera, for sure. But I don't
know, I don't know what tosay except that's the way of the world.
(01:06:51):
As far as Jalen Green, Yeah, Scottie Barnes has been very good.
Evan Mobley's been very good. Iget why Jalen Green was drafted when
he was the attractiveness of the skillset of a hyper athletic wing jumps out
of the gym, throws down alleyoops. I mean he can you know,
(01:07:15):
knock down, step back, three, pull up Jay's tough layups in
the lane, like he can doit all. A way of phrasing it
that I always go back to isif you look at Jalen Green's highlight reel,
Jalen green highlight reel looks as goodas anybody's in the NBA. It's
just that low light reel. Andit's the fact that he doesn't do it
(01:07:38):
consistently. Like he can dunk allover everybody. He can throw down alley
oops, knock down, step backjays, he can you know, crossover
dribble, pull up mid range. He can do it all, just doesn't
do it all consistently enough. AndI get it, like the patients is
wearing thin with the rockets fans foras the nature of us following sports these
(01:07:59):
day goes anyways, We're always go, go, go, and we don't
want to wait, and we wantyou want everything now. Why isn't he
a star now? But also youcan keep waiting and waiting and waiting,
and then you know, if yousay wake me up when Jalen Green's at
All Star, you might never getup because it's it could be very well
possible that he never realizes his fullpotential. So it's tough. But he
(01:08:21):
is on a rookie contract right now. He is getting a lot of looks.
He also is still he's getting benchedin fourth quarters. I think Emao
Doka, it's very clear the waythat he his messaging and postgame and pregame
and all that type of stuff isit feels like just to me that he's
he's not happy with the lack ofactivity when shots aren't going down. And
he also called out Alprin Shangun onthis as well, But I mean Alpert
(01:08:44):
Schangoon overall a better player than JalenGreen right now, and it's it's not
particularly close, but that you know, when the shots aren't going down,
he gets down a little bit. He's not fighting for rebounds, he's not,
you know, being as active defensively. So you don't want it to
be the trait of an NBA playerwhere if they start out over four,
then they just lose interest in thegame. And unfortunately that's something that can
(01:09:08):
happen and creep in with Jalen Greenand coach Udoka's philosophy is like, well,
we got guys that will go outthere and try, like Cam Whitmore
is gonna go out there and try, and well he's gonna mess up defensively
too. Don't get a starting onthat. But you know, I'm in
Thompson's gonna go out there and he'sgonna try, he's gonna put his best
foot forward. So he looked greatin the first half of the game on
Thursday, and that's where you fallin love with the abilities of Jalen Green.
(01:09:30):
But then at the end of theday he scored thirty four points,
but it was on twenty eight shots. He took seventeen to three pointers.
The highest highest of his career beforethat was fifteen that he took in his
rookie season. So he got upa lot of threes. He made seven
of them. That's pretty good. But it's just you know, some games
(01:09:51):
you're like, this kid is afuture star and then but then most of
the time you're sitting there saying, why is Jalen Green even on the court
like it looks like he doesn't evenwant to be out there. Sometimes the
body language can get bad. Hecan hang his head, you know,
trotting down the other end of thecourt rather than getting back with with some
purpose. And that so far hasbeen really the the Jalen Green experience for
(01:10:17):
the Houston Rockets, and it doeshurt that you have other guys that are
performing better right now. Evan Mobley'salready made I think was he first team
All Defense last year? A secondteam Evan Mobley, he's been All Defense.
And then the thing I even talkedabout when you were deciding basically at
that point between Evan Mobley and JalenGreen, it was that the mobiley had
(01:10:38):
the higher floor. Mobley was goingto be, at the minimum a solid
NBA starter and that's what he's gonnabe. Jalen Green had superstar potential.
So it was a matter of doyou want to take the high floor in
Evan Mobley, but maybe the lowerceiling or the higher ceiling with the lower
floor of Jalen Green. That's whatthe Rockets rolled the dice on and so
(01:10:59):
far you're getting closer to the floorthan you are to the ceiling with Jill
and Green, all right, sevenone three two one two five seven ninety
is the phone number here on theSports RV Show seven to one three two
one two five seven ninety. Tweetsat sports RV if you'd like to get
in that way, those of youon hold, I promise you are next.
But we're gonna take a quick bottomof the hour break here on Sports
(01:11:21):
Talk seven ninety. In about twentyminutes, you got coming up some Astros
spring training coverage. Twelve oh five. First pitch right here on Sports Talk
seven ninety, your home for thestros final segment of the Sports RV Show.
(01:11:43):
Here on Sports Talk seven ninety, broadcasting live from the Onion A Creek
Cafe in the Heights, We've gotthe h Down Chili throw Down starting up
at one o'clock. Crowd's already filingin here. People are getting ready.
It's gonna be all you can eatchili chili cook off, really good chili
had some last year as well, ice cold drinks. There's gonna be live
music DJs. Apparently I'm gonna bemceeing for a little bit. I don't
(01:12:08):
know what's going on with that, but we'll figure it out. So make
sure you come on down to OnionCreek Cafe at one o'clock. I'll be
hanging out, you know what.Never mind all right, seven and three
two one two five seven ninety isthe phone number if you want to get
in. Seven one three two onetwo five seven ninety. Talking some in
the last segment about Jalen Green, and that's been kind of the hot topic
(01:12:32):
for the Rockets probably all year.Uh tweet coming in from Texan O three
seven to one. Jalen Green isand always will be Steve Francis light cut
bait. Yikes, there's somebody youdon't want to be the light version of.
It's probably Steve Francis. But yeah, I mean you just showed the
flashing of potential. And then it'sjust about consistently. That's anything. And
first of all, it's anything inlife. It's consistency, that's anything.
(01:12:56):
You know, I can do agood show on Monday, but can you
can you do good show Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. That's how
you make it in whatever business you'rein. Jalen Green can be good for
one game, but that's how youbecome, you know, from just a
guy to a consistent starter to anall star and then to an All NBA.
It's about bringing it every single night. And the guys who can are
(01:13:19):
the all time greats in the Allpros. The guys who can't, they're
just a guy. You know,Eric Gordon, for example, in his
NBA career, he could drop thirtyon a given night, but he's not
gonna drop thirty every night, andthat's why he ends up, you know,
being a six Man of the Year, being a bench player. He's
very good, made a lot ofmoney and well it was a starter actually
for the Rockets as well before goinginto the six man role. But I
(01:13:41):
mean, you get my drift. He's not going to the Basketball Hall of
Fame so and really quite frankly moreefficient scorer than Jalen Green's been so far
in his NBA career. So Iget it. And maybe I just have
a special uh you know, biasedfor Jailing. I root for him just
because number one, he's a Rocket. And I don't know when we got
(01:14:03):
into this mode of not rooting foryour own players on your own team,
but people do that. But Iroot for him because he's a Rocket.
I don't choose sides between, youknow, Jalen Green and Albrinch. There's
alprinching gooon factions and Jalen Green factionsand they root against each other when the
other guy does bad. That's stupid, that's dumb, dumbass. In fighting
within fan bases makes no sense tome. Like Roof they wear rockets on
(01:14:26):
the front of the uniform and saysHouston, those are your guys, that's
who you should be rooting for.But anyways, I'm rooting for Jalen Green.
But like I said, my optimismis probably at an all time low.
But he also is just in histhird NBA season, growth was stunted
by the COVID pandemic, only playedseventeen games in the G League. Uh,
(01:14:48):
And so they're they're. What I'msaying is I'm not writing him off
at the age of twenty two sevenOn three two one, two five seven
to ninety the phone number if you'dlike to get in. As we continue
on the final segment, the Sport'sr V show ahead of Astro spring training,
Girod on the West Side is calledin so we shall get to him.
Grod. What's going on? Oh, ain't too much man, how's
(01:15:10):
it going Ross? It's going great? What do you got Yeah, the
man show me before I talk aboutthe Rockets in a little bit about the
teestans, did the Rockets is stayingh Jalen Green? Did he get a
stench out? He's standing out?Okay, that down? Okay, that's
good. Yeah. He just hasn'tdeveloped as a shooter. Man. That's
the main main Issue's He's very athletic. He can get to the basket.
He still ain't the greatest finisher, but he can get to the basket and
finish a lot of highlight reel dunks. He's got a lot of explosiveness.
(01:15:34):
But the problem with him is,man, he's just a jump shot.
This has not come along and untilhe develops a jump shot, man,
he's gonna be a limited player.Man. He's not a great playmaker either.
But this is actually his first year, you know, being asked to
be more of a playmaker. Sohe maybe can get better as fat But
the real issue with him is outsideshooting, and the real issue with the
(01:15:54):
Rockets in general, or they don'thave a top fifteen player in the NBA.
Man, if you don't have atop fIF team player, you really
can't really consider himself a championship contenderthey have. I like some doom,
but to me at his betch,he's a number two option. You know,
you got Javaris Smith. I likehim. He plays both ends of
the court, but he's more ofa number three option. That's that's the
problem. They don't have enough outsideshooting and they don't have a number one
(01:16:16):
option. Until they get that guy, maybe a win more develops, maybe
it's a goon develops into that guy. Until they get that guy on their
team, Man, it's gonna bea cap on what they can really accomplish
as far as a championship caliber teamin the NBA. So with all that
being stated, man, quick thingon another thing, man, you know,
you know some teams that kind ofdevelop players young players. Great is
a Miami Heat and the Golden StateWarriors. You look at what the Warrior's
(01:16:39):
doing with Comminga guys like Moody. They do a great job of developing young
players. Commingia. Man Kminga's lookinglike he's gonna be an all star level
player and he's already establish himself asa number two option. So Steph Curry,
they actually put Lay Thompsons on thebench. Man. So Warriors and
the Heat have done a great jobof developing young players. Hopefully the Rockers
with their new coaching staff will bea up in that top of class.
(01:17:00):
As far as developing young players. Were gonna find out in the next couple
of years. They cause they gota lot of young players and we're gonna
find out in the next couple ofyears how they how they are as for
as player development. With all thatbeing said, quick thing on the Texans.
These are two guys that I'll belooking at for the Texans out of
people ain't been talking about that, maybe talking about Sae Kuon Barkley, which
I think is a pipe dream. He's he made fourteen million last year.
The Texans are looking to maybe goover no more than ten millions. So
(01:17:24):
unless he's gonna take a disc guyout, I don't really see him here.
But the guy I think they needto look at is DeAndre Smith,
running back out of Eagles. Hewas under used for the for the Eagles.
You look at his George per carreyfour point six yards per carry.
He's an underrated receiver out of thebackfield. I think he'll fit the price
range that the Texans are looking at. That's the guy I think the Texans
are the target, and the linebackerthat obuld target is Patrick Queen from the
(01:17:47):
Baltimore Ravens. I think the Ravensare gonna franchise matter Bouquet, so that's
gonna leave Queen for free acy Igo after Queen fair him with Harris.
You look at where Demico Ryance camefrom. He had came from a situation
where he had two dominant linebackers andWerner in Greenlaw. I think he'll be
able to maybe do that again withthe Texans with Harris and Queen Man,
(01:18:09):
that'd be the two major creations.I'll be going after these receivers that they
talking about, the Mike Evans. You know, I think this is as
far as the draft coming up,this is a deep receiver course. I
think the I think the Texans probablyneed to look at the draft as far
as bringing in the receiver, maybeproving the defensive tackle position. They got
the guy I think out of Texas, Murphy Jenkins out of Michigan, So
(01:18:30):
I think they can prove the Dline through the draft because it's strong on
d line, the strongest corner backand strong at the receivers. So I
think the Texans need to look atthe draft as far as feel the nose,
knees, but as far as runningback, which is weak in the
draft, you go after one ofthose top free agent running backs and linebacker,
Queen. I just want to seewhat your thoughts is on that.
All right, thanks a lot.I appreciate you drawed up thoughts. Are
(01:18:51):
you said a lot? So letme try to get all of it.
Yeah, I think one of theI'll start with the Jaalen Green stuff will
go to the Texans free agency afterthat. Yeah, the three point shot,
it's been disappointing. I mean forhim to regress the way that he
has, I mean, what we'rewhat we're winnssing in front of our eyes
is regression. And this is justnot the way that it was supposed to
go. This is not what we'relooking for. This is not, you
(01:19:13):
know, if you're a Rockets fan, what you were wanting to see.
It was supposed to be the thirdyear leap, like we've seen from John
Morant, like we've seen from AnthonyEdwards, like we've seen some other players,
where they really start to get it, things start to click, the
game slows down, all those cliches, that you want to use, et
cetera. It hasn't been that way. Field goal percentage in three straight years
(01:19:35):
has gone down for Jalen Green.Three point percentage in three straight years has
gone down for Jalen Green. Pointsper game did go up last year because
the volume went much higher. He'sat twenty two points per game. You're
like, okay, that's cool. He's back down a seventeen point nine.
That's where he was basically as arookie, and it's an fortunate to watch.
(01:20:00):
And now he's shooting thirty even aftermaking seven in his last game,
he's still thirty one percent on theseason league average. It changes from year
to year, generally around thirty fivethirty six percent. You'd like him at
least above thirty three, because thatthen makes it about one point per shot,
which is about the same as shootingfifty percent from the field. That's
(01:20:24):
why you shoot three, he's becausethey're worth more for them points per shot.
So you know, we uh,we'll just have to keep watching.
His career is not over. Idon't know what the reason is for this
regression, but it certainly is discouragingto see in this in this third year
(01:20:45):
of his career. As far asthe Texans free agency, absolutely, running
back is somewhere they might go,somewhere they need to go. The only
the only running back on the rosterright now for the Texans is Damian Pierce,
and well, while I love mesome Damien Pierce, he was he
was terrible last year. Devin Singletarywas great. Devin Singletary also is a
free agent. I like the nameof DeAndre Swift. I mentioned this earlier
(01:21:09):
in the show. You have AaronWilson reporting with Click to Houston that Sakwan
Barkley is interested in becoming a HoustonTexan. He's been communicating with CJ.
Stroud. It's like been following himon Twitter and all that type of stuff.
And the words from Aeron Wilson weretop destination for the Houston Texans for
(01:21:30):
Sequon Barkley. Problem is, Imean, the rumored ask for him as
a top running back is around threeyears, thirty six million dollars, so
that's gonna be about twelve million ayear. Christian McCaffrey is the highest paid
running back in the NFL. Ithink he's making around fifteen sixteen million dollars
a year. So you're gonna becommitting a lot of money at a position
(01:21:55):
where it's not common to commit alot of money, So Sekwan Barkley doesn't
seem extremely likely. There was anarticle from ESPN talking about Tony Pollard possibly
getting in and being a guy thatthe the Texans could sign, and that
(01:22:15):
makes sense. It was Aaron Schottz, who formerly formerly of Football Outsiders,
writing that article and saying that itwas, you know, thunder being Damian
Pierce and Tony Pouler would be thelightning. Tony Pollard more thriving as a
backup, which he did of coursewith Ezekiel Elliott. Like Tony Pouler was
great, then they made him thefuture back and he was okay. He
wasn't terrible, he wasn't had agood start to the season and then kind
(01:22:38):
of petered off after that. Andas far as DeAndre Swift, I'd be
on board with DeAndre Swift as wellto to pair with Damian Pierce. I
think he's a really good running back. I like what he did in Philadelphia,
I like what he did in Detroit. Before that, you mentioned his
yards per carrying all that type ofstuff. I'll go ahead and pull up
his stats from last year. I'dactually, you know, I wasn't keeping
(01:22:58):
a keen eye on it. Iknow he missed a little bit of time
or he started off as the backupto Kenneth Gainwell, right, but then
Gainwell got hurt and then he tookover. So yeah, as they pull
it up. Sixteen games, athousand yards four point six of carry,
that's pretty good. Five touchdowns, thirty nine catches, two hundred and fourteen
yards eh one touchdown. But yeah, I mean just somebody like a Deonder
(01:23:21):
Stiff, like a Devin Singletary.I mean, you've got CJ. Stroud.
You don't need. You know, you're not gonna people been talking about
Dereck Henry and stuff like that.I don't know if you're gonna go with
someone like him. As like, you don't need a bell cow running back
because that's just not something that younormally have. In today's NFL. The
(01:23:41):
Kansas City Chiefs are back to backSuper Bowl champions. Who's their bellcout running
back? I mean, Isaiah Pachecogets a lot of run, but do
you call him like a no doubtabout it? Can't stop? You know,
bell cow running back? I don'tI don't think I would say that.
So and then, but who wasit was? Was Pacheco their pre
guy the year before with how muchwas it? Clyde Edwards, E Layer
(01:24:03):
and Jerck McKinnon and all that typeof stuff. Best running back in the
nation. Christian McCaffrey was on thisthe as the forty nine Ers, but
of course they lost because well,uh Brock Party was dared to throw and
well he didn't come through for theforty nine Ers in that game. So
I definitely need to do something atrunning back. DeAndre Swift as an name,
(01:24:24):
I like, Pauler's a name,I like Sekwon Barkley. I mean,
there's a number of other guys thatcan go. Aaron Jones might end
up being a free agent, Sodefinitely something we will be keeping an eye
on. In terms of the HoustonTexans and the free agency watch wouild continues.
I think it opens up in maybea couple of weeks, so something
we'll be watching, of course, and we'll also be watching the Houston Astros
(01:24:45):
in spring of training. And thatis coming your way right here on Sports
Talk seven ninety Christian Javier getting thestart. It'll be a twelve h five
first pitch pregame is starting in justmoments here. You want to keep it
right here because it is basically amajor league lineup. Al Tuve, Alvarez,
Bregman, Tucker McCormick, Trey Cabbageis in there, Jeremy Paine is
(01:25:10):
in there, Victor Carrottini as well. That's gonna do it. For the
