Speaker 1 (00:01):
How many fish on our stringer, how many points on
our buck, how many feathers in our bag. That's how
we keep score around here. Sportsmen and women of all
skill levels, let's disconnect from the day to day grind
and stay connected to the outdoor activities that you and
(00:22):
your family love. This is the Doug Pike Show, brought
to you by American Shooting Centers, the largest non military
shooting facility in Texas, had by Riceland Waterfowl Hunting Club
in Eagle Lake, a premiere waterfowling experience available exclusively to members.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
And their guests. Now here's Dog Pike Alike Sunday. This
of the program starts right now. I am making some
adjustments to my screen here, taking some things down, putting
some things back up, so that I can talk with
relative intelligence about what's going on around here. I want
(01:06):
to get this wind. I want that wind site to
come up. Where did it go?
Speaker 3 (01:10):
There?
Speaker 2 (01:11):
It is right there. I'm kind of curious. We had
such a rough middle of the week with all the wind,
and then this morning, Yeah, it's still sixteen at the
Galveston Jetties. It looks like I'm pretty sure. Yeah, the
North Jetties got sixteen. It says out of the east,
but everything else says no. It says more like north
(01:31):
and with just a hint of east as it crawls
off shore. But by and large, the wind values, if
you throw out that one as an anomaly, it's all
single digits from well, if you throw out the jetty
and then start looking southwest, it's all single digits all
the way down to Port O'Connor. And there's another weird,
(01:55):
just kind of anomalous nineteen miles per hour eighteen thirteen,
fourteen fifteen going down all the way well farther down.
It doesn't matter. Most of what I'm worried about is
right up here in Galveston Bay System, and those are
all single digits except for the one I talked about
a second ago. So if you're not going to be
sitting out there at the North Jetty under the wind
(02:17):
vein the weather vein, and don't worry about it's going
to be nice. I woke up this morning to this,
and this is an interesting time for me. I wake
up this morning to the sound of a train whistle,
and it makes me smile when I hear that train
whistle this time of year, because that means that we
(02:40):
do have a north wind, and that north wind means
it's probably going to be cooler. That's the only time
I can hear that train rolling down those tracks. Well,
there's more than one a day, that's for sure. I've
been caught behind them at all hours of the day
and night, and it drives me nuts. But that's the
(03:00):
one when cool, dry air from the north carries that
sound all the way down to my house. And from
from the tracks to the house, probably a good two miles,
I would say. I think it's about two miles, maybe
a little less, but probably close to that. And otherwise
(03:21):
it just it just gets drowned out by everything between
hither and Yon, and there's a lot of a lot
of trees in between a lot of buildings in between
the tracks and the and the in my house. So
it's a it's a really refreshing thing. And I walked
out the door already pretty sure of what it was
going to feel like, because I checked the forecast last night,
(03:42):
and boy, it's nice out there. If you haven't been
outside yet, you owe it to yourself, you owe it
to your psyche to go outside and just gobble up
some of this fresh cool air that's out there now,
and it's going to hang around actually for several days.
That's the even better part. It's going to be here
for a few days. So I've got golf plans tomorrow.
(04:03):
I've got a little bit more choring to do at
the house this afternoon, but once I get that knocked out,
I may go work on my game. The Lord knows
it and needs it right now. Golf is such a
fickle beast. I love the game. I love it, but
I also curse it at the same time because it
just refuses all the clubs. There are fourteen clubs in
(04:26):
that bag, and they cannot all get along with me
at the same time. At least one, and usually more
than one is gonna pitch it a little hissy fit
when we get on the golf course. And right now
the hissy fit, the current one is probably probably my
(04:47):
gap wedge, which I used to do a lot of chipping,
and I'll get back to that later. Fishing's just rolling
steadily into summer, and it's it's good. It's gonna be
a really good day today and tomorrow. If you happen
to have Sinco Demayo off or and you don't have
plans to celebrate it. Otherwise tomorrow might not be a
(05:08):
really bad day to go fishing down on the coast.
I would love to see this north wind settle that
surf down. I don't think it's gonna get cool enough
to change the water temperature by more than an agree
a degree or two, and even that's not gonna hurt
the opportunity for maybe somebody to be among the first
(05:32):
to walk into the surf and catch some speckled trout.
I haven't looked at the water today. I've got some
sort of a connection issue with saltwater recon and I'm
gonna have to get that remedied as fast as I can.
I need that access, I really do, and I'll get
that done and I'll be able to look and talk
more more intelligently, if you will, about the surf when
(05:54):
I can actually see it. That's such an advantage we
have now over when I was growing up, Such an advantage.
You had to call, That's all you could do. You
had to call somebody who had a business right there
on the beach front, and that some of the surf
shop guys would tell you the truth. But unfortunately, back then,
(06:16):
because they were all trying to make a living, and
they knew they were the only source we had for
information about the clarity of the surf, the chop that
was on it, whatever. Some of the people who ran
those piers down there would tell a fib or two
from time to time. Call down there. Hey, got a
(06:38):
kind of a light southeast wind up here in Houston,
hoping maybe there's some speckled trout under that pier of
yours tonight. What do you think, Oh, yeah, son's about
to go down and man, that water's really beautiful, and
it's almost no wind at all, it's just and there's
a lot of people walking out there. They're ready to
(06:58):
go that they know they're going to catch their trout tonight.
So you call a buddy, you jump in the car,
you drive down there, and just as you come over
the sea wall, there's enough light at the sixty first
Street pier that you can tell that it's rough as
a cob. The water is the same color as a
(07:20):
an iced coffee at any pick any coffee shop you want.
And there's not a snowball's chance on a hot August
sidewalk that you're going to catch a speckle trout. But
that guy me wanted you to come on down there
because he knew that if he got you down there,
you'd probably go ahead and come on out on the
pier and fish. Anyway. You buy that ticket and they
(07:40):
would staple it to your sleeve. That's how they knew
you'd paid to be out there on that pier, not
the sixty first Street pier. I think that was at
ninetieth Street. They did that. It'd staple something to your
sleeve to let them know when they came walking out
there looking for people who slid by and ran out there. Somehow.
(08:00):
It was a crazy thing. I just bought annual passes.
If you're a peer rat like I was back then,
and you study peer fishing, you learn how and when
to go and what to do when you get there.
You can do very well off the piers along the
Texas coast. And we're going to have that one more
over there over there on the Bottlevard Peninsula, that gracious
(08:23):
thing that is being done on behalf of all of
us who lost. Oh man, we lost the pass. That
was so sad. When they shut that thing down. It
took it, took away access that had been enjoyed for
decades and It took away access to a place Rollover Pass,
(08:49):
where god, maybe a million people you think might have
experienced fishing for the first time over that many years.
Easy access, good fishing if you knew how to do it,
and pretty good fishing if you had no clue what
you were doing. And now we're going to have a
peer there. And that's cute and all, but it doesn't
(09:13):
It doesn't help East Bay, it doesn't help the Galveston
Bay system turn its water over like it should, and
it's just a long term loss. Frankly, as far as
I'm concerned, if anybody can make a really good positive
case for closing Rollover Pass that doesn't include, hey, I
(09:36):
wanted to make some money on real estate, then I'd
love to hear it, because that's that's the only thing
I can think of that that made sense about closing
that pass. What a fantastic place it was. But it's
not the only place to fish all on the Texas coast,
and thank goodness for that, Huh. We have probably as
much or more access by boat, by call, by kayak,
(10:01):
by waiting booty. There's so many places that we can
fish that if you set your mind to it, on
pretty much any day, under pretty much any conditions, you
certainly could go out and have a legitimate shot at
a redfish, legitimate shot at a speckled trout, legitimate shot
(10:23):
at a flounder, And if you want to drag some
dead shrimp over your shoulder, I bet you there are
places you could go catch decent sized, eating sized croakers.
I don't know where that would be, honestly, I would
think just basic structure in the bay. The causeway bridge
might be a good place to go looking for crokers,
(10:43):
but that's also a good place to go looking for gamefish,
So why not do that instead? Right seven one three
two one two five seven ninety Email me dougpick at
iHeartMedia dot com. We have ongoing today. In addition to
tremendous outdoor activity potential, we got the Rockets and the Astros.
(11:04):
The Astros go first, and they're honestly they I think
they go off at one to ten and right now,
with what one hundred and forty hundred something games left
in their season, they're just trying to stay in the
hunt until the bats heat up. Their bats need to
get to full speed, and they're close. I don't know
of any other team in the game. I mean, and
(11:26):
I'm talking about the game of baseball right down to
high school, that seems to leave more runners in scoring
position than the Astros. We get the mo of late
has been the first batter up in the inning is out, somehow,
some way out, second batter gonna get on first, somehow,
(11:47):
some way, third batter either gonna move him up and
have somebody on first and second runner in scoring position,
or make it out. But the bottom line is that
guy on second. The chances of that runner on second
getting home these days had been slim to none, and
(12:10):
as the joke goes, none just left town. It's frustrating
to watch these guys get They give themselves a chance,
and their pitching has been outstanding. Outstanding pitching. I heard
somebody talking recently about about the Astros, and they're pitching.
They're loaded, they're good. They've got good people up and
(12:30):
down the lineup or up and down the pitching roster.
You got great starters, you got a great bullpen, but
they have to be to win a game, you also
have to score the most runs, and that's we're kind
of hiccupping. Unfortunately, Rockets beat up the Warriors Friday, night
to force a game seven tonight with it Friday night. Yeah,
(12:51):
to force a game seven tonight that goes off at
seven point thirty. They're playing at home. I like their chances.
I really do. Hey, can you grab that somebody. I
appreciate that. I'll tell you what. Let's take this break
in whoever that is there, I will talk to them
first when we get back from the break. On the
way out, I'm going to tell you about El Kubano Cigars.
(13:12):
This is my buddy, Manny Lopez, and I emailed him yesterday, ad,
what do you do when the season changes at this
cigar popularity go down, go up? What happens? I would
think with more people playing golf, more cigars there. I
would think, with it being the season for celebrations and holidays,
(13:33):
more cigar smoking there. And if you're happened, if you
happen to be one of those cigar smokers and you
appreciate a fine cigar, not something you can get at
a convenience store, but if you appreciate, truly find cigars
hand rolled right here in Texas City by Manny and
his crew. It's only one of four dozen cigar manufacturing
(13:55):
facilities in the entire country, and it's right here and
you don't have to The beauty is you don't have
to pay a middleman. You don't have to pay a
middleman for your fine cigars that maybe come from somewhere else.
Many ships cigars all over the country every day, thousands
a week on average, and he has people in there
(14:15):
who do nothing to make a living but roll amazing
cigars one hundred and fifty something varieties. Whether it's for
a big golf tournament you got coming up, maybe the
groomsman in a wedding party, maybe celebrating a milestone for
your company. Maybe you're a seller, a salesman of some sort,
(14:37):
and you want to wow some of your clients. El
Kubano Cigars can do all of that for you, and
many will even come out. He'll set up one of
those little canopy things, a couple of tables and spread
out tobacco leaves and sit right there and roll cigars
for your best friends, your clients, whoever's there coming and
going to your event. It's an amazing operation he has there,
(14:58):
and he takes great pride in what he does. He
tastes great pride. You can even get the cigar bands
you can get them done with your logo, your company's logo,
your your client's logo, whatever it is. Manny can do it.
Elcubano Cigars dot com smoking lounge in Texas City there
at the factory, and a smoking lounge in League City
(15:18):
as well, about about fifteen minutes apart between them. Elcubanocigars
dot com. El Cubanocigars dot Com at eighteen on Sports
Talk seven nine at the Dougpike Show, Thanks for listening.
I've let that play, but I got somebody who's hanging
on for a long time here. I don't like to
leave people hanging on. Let me go get Greg and
that would be think Greg, what's up?
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Man?
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Oh here you are? Greg?
Speaker 5 (15:42):
You there can hear me?
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Oh yeah, I hear you.
Speaker 6 (15:46):
Okay, great, Hey, good morning, good morning.
Speaker 7 (15:50):
I'm uh I'm calling because man, I just started getting
back into fishing good a couple months ago. And uh,
a good way for me to, you know, spend some
time with my steps on person hang out.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (16:07):
And I got a question though we live.
Speaker 7 (16:09):
Out here, I don't know if you know we're like
it in like more like it in and Darry Ash
forty kind of like close to the spring. It's Spring
Branch area. But anyways, trying to find a place to
actually get some action.
Speaker 6 (16:23):
You know, right now I only have a fresh water license.
Speaker 7 (16:27):
Eventually I want to get both, that's right, but uh.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
Right now we've been trying to uh go to uh
we've really.
Speaker 7 (16:39):
Been because the place is close closest to my house
or like John Paul Landing Park which is close to.
Speaker 6 (16:46):
Tow ninety and ninety nine.
Speaker 7 (16:47):
And then there's uh there's Mary Joe Peckham Park which
is a little closer.
Speaker 6 (16:52):
It's out in Katie.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
I know exactly where that is. Yeah, that was on
the top of my list when when you told me
where you lived. Right, So, how are you fishing if
you're not having Luton now, Greg, how how are you fishing?
How are you baiting the hooks and all that? What
are you doing?
Speaker 5 (17:08):
Well?
Speaker 7 (17:08):
I mean really I've been just I've actually just been
using uh like uh because I used to fish for
catfish and I used to be pretty good at it,
but I would just use like trouble hooks and put.
Speaker 6 (17:21):
Like the dobate on there.
Speaker 7 (17:22):
I think at one point I started like because I
got a better rod and reel, like a heavier duty
or one. So I started using bigger hooks. So I
think that might be a problem too. I think that
might be a problem because but that's really what I've
been doing. But man, we've had like no.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Just striking out yes, steps looking at you like I
don't know about this fishing thing. Man.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (17:49):
We we went and there was it was like totally
like I don't.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
Have a boat.
Speaker 6 (17:54):
Yeah, So like we went to like Livingston.
Speaker 7 (17:59):
We we were like there for like three or four
hours and didn't catch anything. And the other guys that
were fishing or around us were like not catching anything either.
But I kept Somebody told me like, you got to
go to the dam, but we couldn't figure out how
to get down there. Yeah, it's like RV park or
something like. I didn't want to for trying to go
in there.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Let me help, Okay. So first thing, Mary Joe Peckham Park,
I believe is on the Parks and Wildlife departments list
of neighborhood lakes. There's a there's a site at the
Parks and Wildlife a page at the Parks and Wildlife
Department's website about neighborhood fishing, and it'll list all the
places that it stocks regularly with catfish. Okay, so you're
(18:43):
you're going to be going to a lake if you,
you know, look at that schedule and see when they're stalking,
you're going to be going to a place that's they're
loading it up for you. The second thing to do
if well, one thing, if you're anywhere where and you've
sat there for three hours and the people around you
and all of you have sat there for three hours,
you hadn't caught anything. You're in the wrong spot. Okay,
(19:03):
we're gonna get you out of there. But to let's
say you go to Mary Joe Peckham. Now there's a
lot of water there, okay, and there's a lot of
places you can stop and fish, and you're trying to
figure out where the fish are well rather than trying
to figure out where they are, bring them to you. Okay.
And I'm gonna give you the same advice I've given
so many people over the years, and it will pay
all for you. You do need to come down to smaller hooks.
(19:25):
Just get some like maybe oh maybe a number four
the kale they either call it kale or collige ka
h l E. Hooks that you don't have to set
the hook on when just your timing doesn't have to
be perfect. You just let the line come tight, okay,
and the fish is gonna be there. The bait you're
gonna use is the same thing you're gonna use for chum,
(19:48):
which is how you're gonna get those fish to come
to you and swim past everybody else's cork and everybody
else's bait. And all you gotta do is go to
the grocery store, buy the cheapest generic kernel corn that
you can, and buy the cheapest generic vanilla extract that
you can. And everybody in this audience is going, yep,
(20:09):
he's gonna tell him about this because it's just it's
it's not one hundred percent. But if there's a catfish
in that lake and you you take the corn, I'm
getting ahead of myself. So you take that can of corn,
you open it up, you drain all the water off,
you pour all of that corn out of that can
into a ziplock bag. And then the vanilla extract you
put a couple of tablespoons in. I buy mine at HGB.
(20:30):
They've got like make believe fake vanilla extract. Fish have
no idea of the difference, and you can get like
a jug of that stuff for five bucks and instead
of paying I think it's like six or seven dollars
for a spoonful of mccormicks vanilla extract, which they're not
that sophisticated. So you put a couple of tablespoons of
that in there and you let it just marinate on
(20:53):
the way to wherever you're gonna fish. When you get
to your spot, the very first thing you do is
reach into that bag and grab a handful of that
corn and just just scatter it out in front of
you in the water. Just scatter it as far as
you can throw it, and it's not gonna be very far,
and it doesn't have to be because they're gonna and
try to put it in a space where the wind
(21:14):
is blowing over your shoulder, where that scent will carry
across the water and the fish will pick up on
it and they'll come and find the corn, and then
you can I like to use a cork, frankly, because
it's just fun little kid fishing watching the cork bounce
around and go down. But you use that cork and
set the bait on that little hook about maybe off
(21:36):
the waters three feet deep, set it about two and
a half. Just keep it just off the bottom. And man,
I'm telling you, And once you get that corn sitting
out there, then you rig up the rods. Then you
rig up how you're gonna fish, and you talk a
little bit and you shoot the breeze, and you take
a little time for that stuff to kind of marinate
and do it stuff. Maybe have a snack and then
(21:57):
start fishing. Give those fish a chance to get there.
But they'll they'll come from far and wide, they really will. Greg.
And if you're having If you try that and it
doesn't work, call me back.
Speaker 8 (22:06):
Man.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
I'm I'm gonna make it a personal mission to get
you and your step son on some fish. How old
is he?
Speaker 5 (22:12):
Uh, he's uh, he's about to be let's see that.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
He's gonna be twelve.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Oh yeah, he's ready. He needs to catch fish, man,
So he needs to catch fish.
Speaker 7 (22:21):
Almost all the catching anything out in John Paul Landing Park.
Speaker 2 (22:25):
I have never I've never been there. I'm not sure
where where is it exactly.
Speaker 7 (22:29):
It's like so it's kind of like in between. I
would guess, like I ten, it's like at the halfway. Well,
it's closer to the it in side, so it's.
Speaker 6 (22:39):
Like near I ten and ninety nine, like you'll.
Speaker 7 (22:42):
Go like, so it's it's that would be what north
of iten.
Speaker 6 (22:49):
On ninety nine?
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Yeah, how much water is there? Pretty good?
Speaker 6 (22:53):
Bit, it's I tell you it's bigger. It's bigger than
Mary Jefe Peckham Parky.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
No, the same thing. Just do the same thing. Take
that corn out there, man, because if there's a catfish
within one hundred miles of there, it's gonna swim over
there and eat that corn. When I did that, oh
I'm sorry.
Speaker 6 (23:09):
No, I was just gonna say they actually have fish cleaning.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
That's pretty optimistic. Huh. Yeah, So you know there's got
to be fish there, man. Yeah, just go ahead and
start chumming, and your luck's gonna change. I promise you
it is, man, Because to just randomly stop on the
shoreline somewhere and toss a dough ball out there on
a treble hook. The treble hooks they can get kind
of sticky too, because you got three chances to stick
(23:36):
yourself in the arm or the leg or whatever with
a hook when you set it. I like single hooks,
and I and anytime I'm fishing with kids. Well, actually,
every time I fish now for myself personally, I mash
the barbs down flat on the hooks and just so
that way, if I get stuck, I don't have to
stop fishing. I can just pull it out and keep fishing.
Think about doing that too, I promise you, man, if
(23:57):
you start chumming in these lakes, it's got fish cleaning tables.
There's fish in there, and they'll they'll come around to you.
And if they don't, well, you know, like I say,
call me back or email me and I'll find some
spots out there for you. I'll tell you who else
to ask go into it. Like maybe if you've got
a little someplace, not not a big sporting goods store
(24:19):
that happens to sell fishing rods, but if there's a
little bait shop out there, ask somebody who works there
where these people are fishing when they go there. If
you see kids riding around in the neighborhood on bicycles
and you've got your steps with you, don't do it
if you're just by yourself, because they'll think your creeps.
But if they've got fishing rods on a bicycle, they
know where the fish are. I promise you man. That
(24:41):
was me when I was a little kid. It's been
my son when he's you know, was a kid. And
they'll tell you where the fish are. They don't care. Yeah,
stay in touch, Greg, Really, you're my mission for right now.
You're the next guy. I got to get on some fish, Okay,
So stay in touch. We'll get it done, all right,
Thank you so much time.
Speaker 9 (24:59):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Yeah, my pleasure man. Audios. It's kind of not hard
to tell that I like to talk about fishing and
getting kids involved in fishing. Is it's he's in a
pretty good area. There's a lot more water out there
than he thinks, and he's probably he's probably driving past
some neighborhood lakes where there's access. Some neighborhoods get kind
(25:22):
of fussy about who's fishing around there. And if you're
setting up to fish for catfish, that's that's a little
more than just walking the banks trying to bass fish.
So maybe not so much there, but in any of
these little city parks county parks, most of those lakes
are gonna have either catfish or perch or even some
(25:43):
bass in them, and fewer bass, more catfish, and even
more sunfish. Tends to be the way to go. And
if you get those hook sizes back down, if you
use just three or four corn kernels of that corn,
that vanilla soaked corn on that hook and just let it,
just let it sit there out amongst the chum, they
(26:05):
will find it. Let me get to Dave here before
we have to go to the break. What's up, Dave?
Speaker 3 (26:11):
Well, hey, you hitting on all cylinders. The story of
my life of sort of hell, how we you know,
learned and everything. And I'm sitting here with a six
pack of number four uh Snell Snell hooks here. That's
what I'm gonna yeah, you know. And then and then
(26:33):
as soon as I get through here working in Houston,
and I'm gonna head. I got everything packed and loaded
for bear. I'm going to stow fill that bridge.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Good for you man, go get them. Yeah, and then
I'm gonna spend time there. Do you ever, Dave, do
you ever chum over there at that bridge? Yes, I've
been okay, Oh yeah, you're a raised cube guy.
Speaker 10 (26:51):
I have chummed.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
And I bought me a whole deal range cubes over
there that I left at the house. But you know,
I'm worried about that. No, but I mean, I'm not
worried about that. I'll just get me some corn and
I've got vanilla.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
After I was gonna get that corn. There'll be man,
if you left those wrench cubes at home, they'll be
cat fishing your driveway when you get back right here.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Hey, And then uh, you know, uh yeah, you're gonna
believe that we're kind of doing the end around. But
we got a counter offer on this one property out
there and uh it's a lake Leveryon Heights, Section one. Uh,
it's a private lake there, but it's right close to
like Liveryston, three and a half acres. Uh, nice, big
(27:32):
four bedroom house, big huge garage, dang man three car
garage with a garage apartment on the side.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Tell me where that place is, hey, in three acres?
Speaker 11 (27:45):
Hey, I tell you what.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
We got some pine trees out there, and it's got
a concrete uh park bench and in the in the table,
and it's just if we get it, it's a god send.
Speaker 2 (27:57):
Let me tell you, because it's only twenty five minutes from.
Speaker 3 (28:00):
My brother there in downtown New Waite.
Speaker 12 (28:02):
Oh wow.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
Oh when there's a railroad track there too.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
Very cool? Good at night, Hey, Dave. I hate to
do it to you, man, but I'm up against it.
And I've got I got Jericha Markle. She's gonna be
coming on and talk about snakes. So if you love
snakes like us, is this I'm going to wear my
snake boots. Yeah you better.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Oh we got armor, devis, possums and raccoons. The neighbors said, oh, okay.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
All right man yet, okay audios. Yeah, I hate to
cut him short like that, but I got to get
Jerre because she's waiting on us. We'll take a little
break here on the way out timber Creek really quickly.

And then you've got that JJ Woods Teaching Academy there
right next to the range. You've got you got everybody

there really wants to make sure you have a good time,
whether that's helping you with your game, whether that's helping
you with a little food before or after your round,
whether it's helping you on course with some aiming fluid.
And I'll wrap quotes around that. There's always somebody out
there who's looking to make you feel a little more
at home, make you feel more comfortable, maybe even hit
(29:09):
a couple of better shots. Timber Creek Golf Club dot
com is a website FM twenty three fifty one again

the Doug Pike Show. Thank you for listening. I certainly
(29:31):
do appreciate it. I just saw an email come in.
I'm gonna have to deal with that in just a minute, though,
because what I want to do is bring into the program.
One Jericha markle Jericha, good morning. How are you?
Speaker 5 (29:44):
Hey?
Speaker 4 (29:44):
Good morning, I'm great. How are you, Douge?
Speaker 2 (29:46):
You know, I'm okay. I haven't found these snakes yet today,
but I'm gonna be looking this afternoon, I promise you.
I am.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
Oh. Well, it's a little Charlie today, so good luck.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
Well, yeah, that's a very good point. See already you're
raising the state this game. I'm just an amateur I'm
I'm walking through your world. It's safe to call you
a snake expert. What's your background there?
Speaker 4 (30:09):
I am self taught, believe it or not.
Speaker 2 (30:12):
I believe it.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
I just yeah, I just started learning about patterns so
I could know what I'm seeing. And then I kind
of snow on into this passion.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
I'm I'm also self taught, but I'm not as you're
like PhD level from talking to you the other day
on the phone, and I'm just I'm just trying to
learn my colors. I'm trying not to eat the chalk.
That's all so, so right up front, right up front,
Let's let's do this. Let's share with my audience that
all but a handful of snakes they might see in
(30:42):
Southeast texts are going to be non venomous, right, correct, Yeah,
they're just a handful. So, and in order of the
likelihood that we might encounter one of the venomous snakes,
which you can count on one hand, basically which ones
which ones are on the list for around here? Copperhead first,
I guess, right, or maybe cotton Mouth.
Speaker 4 (31:02):
Yeah, I'd say Copperhead and cotton Mouth. They're they're pretty
equal in that measure. I get about equal calls for
those on a daily basis.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
How many times does somebody call you and you go
out there to get rid of the cotton mouth that's
in their yard and it's a water snake?
Speaker 4 (31:22):
Oh that honestly, it used to happen all the time.
But but I've gotten to the point to where I
have people send me photos, yeah, so that I can
confirm for them and at least put their mind at ease, like, yes,
this is what you're seeing, or no, actually this is
what you're seeing, but I'm coming either way.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Yeah, that's yeah. Well, that's good that you go on
out there and help them with them, because a lot
of people are just definitely afraid of snakes. And by
the way, speaking of sending pictures, what what is the
exact page that Facebook page that I found and fell
in love with, What is it exactly called?
Speaker 4 (31:58):
Well, Doug, I'm on so many folks book page pages.
If it's a Texas one and Southeast in general, it
would be what snake is this Southeast Texas?
Speaker 2 (32:09):
Okay, Well, that's a good place to start right there, then,
and with a little bit of learning, if they'll just
invest a little bit of time, most people can learn
to tell the difference at least from the venomous and
non venomous ones, right, m M. Yeah, What do you
think it is? It just strikes so much fear in
some people when they see a snake.
Speaker 4 (32:29):
I think it's just the unknown. And unfortunately, the less
knowledge we have, the more you know scared we are
of the unknown. And you think about childhoods or you know,
some something like that, and you see your parent afraid
of something and you're automatically afraid of that thing too,
(32:50):
and so it's it's a learned behavior from from early on,
and it's definitely just from the unknown. The more the
more you know, the less scared you are.
Speaker 2 (33:01):
That's what I try to tell people. Don't be don't
be frightened of snakes, don't be scared of be respectful.
Speaker 11 (33:07):
Same.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
It's the same place I occupy with sharks. I'm not
scared of them, but I'm very respectful of them. And
that way you come out pretty good all the way
across the board. Huh. There's no reason to reach for
a shovel every time you see a snake, is there?
Speaker 4 (33:21):
Oh? No? No, I mean I mean, would you would
you reach for a shovel? If you came across the bear,
you know you're going to lose that fight.
Speaker 9 (33:29):
So fact it's.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Billy, it's pointless. They're not coming after you. There's no
reason for you to go after them. It's just the
more you learn, the less afraid you are. They kill
out of fear, and and there's really there's really no
need to fear them. Unless you want to pick up
and free handle a venomous snake, then maybe you should
be a little afraid. But other than that, you know,
(33:55):
if you give it space, it's it's definitely going to
give you space. We're huge predators to them.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
I used to be quick enough and brave enough to
handle cotton mouths and copper heads, and now it's just
I'm down to water snakes and king snakes and stuff
like that. I'm not grabbing them anymore. Talk about the
role snakes play in nature, Jericha.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
I mean they play a significant role in you know,
rodent control population. Like one of my favorite native snakes here,
rat snake. Oh yeah, And they will eat almost any
rodent you can name. They're also very mischievous and they'll
get in your chicken coops and eat your chicken eggs
and stuff like that. I always make the joke like
(34:38):
that's your tax that you're paying for them keeping the
rodents off your property.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
You know, that's not a bad way to look at it.
You're just paying the piper, that's.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
Not Yeah, I just get on a few eggs and
they'll keep the rats that day. I mean, yeah, they
play a huge role and just balancing the ecosystem. I'd
rather have a couple of snakes here and there than
a whole bunch of rodents.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Amen. For boy, isn't that the truth? That's what I
tell people. I said, unless you have a yard full
of rats and mice, you're probably not going to have snakes.
And if you do see a snake in your yard
and you don't have rats and mice, it's just passing through.
Leave it alone.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2 (35:15):
What's the most unusual place you've had to go remove
a snake from?
Speaker 4 (35:23):
Unusual? Well, that'd probably be in a kitchen. It was
someone had one in the in a kitchen drawer, is
what they said. And in the end we had to
actually remove the kitchen drawer all the way in order
to get the snake, and it was curled up at
the very back and of course it was a rat snake.
They're often found and the most of our places, but yeah,
(35:48):
behind the kitchen drawer, utility covers. They get stuck in
the most random places.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
When I was in college, a friend of mine kept
venomous snakes at his house because he was selling them
in to the medical school there to use the venom
to create an event and whatnot. And he came home
one day and his mother was sitting on the kitchen
table with a broom in her hands, and she said,
one of your snakes is out. I don't know where
(36:16):
it is, and I've been up on this table for hours.
I need to come down find your snake. And it
was it just it had curled up behind the refrigerator
because of that warm air coming out of there. And
he found it and he put.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
It, I believe.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
And that was the last day he had snakes in
that house.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
By the way, I was like, I'm done, ye done.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
I couldn't take this anymore. What's the biggest snake you've
ever found?
Speaker 4 (36:40):
That would also probably be a rat snake. Now in
South Texas, I'd come across Texas and to go a snake,
but we weren't quick enough to get our hands on it.
But it was massive, and they're huge, and they're amazing snakes,
but me personally getting my hands on a snake would
be a rat snake. And I'd say he was close
to the seat.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
If you look at Facebook, if you look at my page,
you'll see a picture of me holding a snake that
I caught at the golf course. It was a rat
snake also, and it was about that same size. I
was so glad to my son wanted me to catch it,
and I I was kind of making half hearted efforts
at first. He goes, come on, Dad, you can do it,
and then I had I had to go ahead and
pick the thing up. It was very cool, So let's
(37:23):
talk about it. Go ahead.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
I was just gonna say, I find that those larger
rat snakes are a lot more docile.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Than the baby wom Yeah, he kind of fussed for
a little bit when the picture that is there was
one that my son took right after I picked it up,
and he fished fussed for a little bit, but then
he kind of calmed down. So let's let's talk about
what people should do if they're out walking a trail
or playing golf or whatever. They're doing. And see a
snake and it's it's closed, it's within three feet of them.
(37:50):
What do they do?
Speaker 4 (37:53):
It sits in your way and you have to physically,
you know, be be right where it's at. You know,
you can show it away with a stick or something.
But if it's not in your way and you can
give it a wide berth, just go around it. It's
not going to strike out at your ankles. It's not
gonna take you. It's it's going, most likely, nine times
(38:16):
out of ten, it's going to lay there and hope
that it's camouflage is working so well that you don't
see it. So if it doesn't take off, it's thinking, Okay,
this big predator doesn't see me. I'm just really still.
So just just give it a berth and walk away,
and it's not going to follow you.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
It's really a myth that snakes are aggressive, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (38:38):
Oh yeah, one hundred percent. It is a myth. Now
if you pick one up and they will show defensive behavior,
of course they think they're about to die, so but yeah,
no they don't. They don't sit and wait for a
human to come up and decide to pick a fight
with you.
Speaker 2 (38:52):
Do you have snakes as pets as a kid?
Speaker 4 (38:56):
I did not. My brother did. He had a red
tailed boa and she got up to about seven seats. Wow,
and he moved off and left. You're with us? And yeah,
she was a handful. She was a big snake. She
was an escape artist, as you can imagine. I get
home call on the way home from school, like seventh grade.
My Mom's like, well, baby, get out of her cage again.
(39:18):
I'm looking for and I'm thinking, how hard is it
to find a seven foot snake in the house? Like
where could you be.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
Disguised as a broomstick in the in the pantry? Maybe?
Holy cow, I hate to do it, but we gotta go.
Your favorite snake in Texas? Mine are the king snakes,
all of them. They're so beautiful.
Speaker 4 (39:37):
My favorite snake in Texas would have to be one
of the hog No snakes. Okay, cool?
Speaker 2 (39:42):
Yeah, they are flare that old hood up there. Man.
They look like a yeah, wanna be cobra, don't they?
Speaker 4 (39:50):
They do their best?
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Yeah, beautiful snakes. Jessica Jericha excuse me, Jericha Markle. How
can people find you if you if they've got a
snake they want you to come and you're around Southeas,
Texas or southeast Houston. Southwest let me get it right,
southwest Houston.
Speaker 4 (40:05):
Yeah, I'm the Sugarland area. The best way to get
a hold of me is send me a text. I
don't always answer unknown numbers, but if you send me
a text and there's a snake in that text, I'm
going to respond to you within seconds.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
All right, Jeriica. So I'm so glad to meet you.
Maybe someday I can buy you a cup of coffee
or something. I'd love to talk snakes with you. Thank you.
I appreciate your time.
Speaker 12 (40:25):
I really do.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
Yeah, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
All right by Buddy that you bet? Bye? That was
so fun, It really was. I enjoyed talking to her.
We have to take a little break here, otherwise we're
going to be in real trouble. Coming to nine o'clock hour.

an absolutely drop dead, gorgeous cool day like today. American

fifty two on Sports Talk seven to ninety Man, this
hour went fast. Thank you, Jerica, if you're still listening.
Oh my gosh. I love talking about snakes. I've had
them as pets man as Captain Scott weighed in so as.
(41:54):
I always tell people that if you see a snake
and think how in the world did that snake get there,
it's a rat snake. They're great climbers. They're great little
Houdini artists. They'll disappear anywhere. You see a five and
a half six foot rat snake somewhere on on a
mode lawn and you blink and it's gone. They're very cool.
(42:16):
I like them, Rick, what's up, man?
Speaker 11 (42:20):
Well, since I talked to you earlier this morning, I'm
back at the truck. I'm going to get into my
Beanie Leanies and then I'm on head back out. But
I got I got two things. You know, yesterday was
the run for the Roses, right, and you know, unfortunately
my horse came in second again did last year. But
(42:45):
the people that watched that race, let me put it
in comparison to something, if you poured a little bit
more water on it on the track, it would look
about like the branches riz is right now.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Oh my god. Yeah, that was That was the muddiest
running I've ever seen of that race. I haven't seen
them all, and I'm sure there have been a few,
but that was just nasty.
Speaker 11 (43:10):
That's why I called it up here the muddy Brasses,
because I crossed it about at least twice a day.
What I was gonna call you about you have your
uh your secret tanfish concoction Colonel Corny Can and the
little abstract and of course it's the proper mongshank hook
and all that, and I think that's a great bait.
(43:33):
But I was listening to that gentleman earlier with his
twelve year old son. If you think you're gonna catch catfish,
I was gonna share you my my little secret concoction.
Speaker 9 (43:43):
All right, all right, you and I.
Speaker 11 (43:47):
Both don't like trevel hooks, Okay, correct, Uh, I'm if
I'm fishing for catfish, I don't want a single hook.
I'm gonna get me some good sight and I'm gonna
cut that third hook off of a treble hook.
Speaker 9 (44:03):
Okay, it just makes it so much easier.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
That's a good point.
Speaker 11 (44:08):
Now for bait, and that I haven't done this in
a long time, but.
Speaker 10 (44:18):
I used to.
Speaker 11 (44:19):
I could buy chicken fried chicken gizzards at church. Is
fried chicken cheaper than at the store, fright, But I
kept a jar of bacon grease and I would soak
them gizzards in there. I'm wanna tell you, gizzard is
like leather. Okay, you can put that on a hook,
(44:44):
and you can just you're not changing worms and sad
every fifteen minutes, some little something nip your bait off
and dobate forget it. Uh, put a gizzard on there,
soaked in bacon grease. That greases goes out in water
and and it draws them back in. And you're not
changing baits. If a catfish is hungry, he's gonna eat.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
The only reason, rick that I offer up the corn
soaked in vanilla versus stink bait versus gizzards and livers
and all that stuff, is because kids are gonna play
with that bait, and they're gonna wipe their hands on
their pants or on their shirts, and they're gonna smell
like gosh awful messes all the way home. It's gonna
(45:30):
get into the seats of your car, it's gonna get
all over the place. And I have not found a
catfish that will turn down vanilla soaked corn.
Speaker 11 (45:40):
Well, you know.
Speaker 9 (45:44):
They make things like cowls.
Speaker 2 (45:46):
Well, I understand that.
Speaker 11 (45:48):
Understand there's all kind of remedies to the car thing.
Speaker 9 (45:51):
And there's there's a thing that the house called a
washing machine.
Speaker 2 (45:54):
Well, Ricky, I'm away.
Speaker 11 (45:56):
I never had worried about that with my kids and grandkids.
But anyways, each to their own. But I'm gonna tell
you it's a great mate.
Speaker 9 (46:04):
It's it's cheap.
Speaker 11 (46:06):
Oh yeah, catfish go far away over here, you go
over a kernel of corn.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
All right, Well, I appreciate the call.
Speaker 11 (46:14):
You and I need to have a comf. You and
I need to have a conscious Let's do that. I
have the place to do it.
Speaker 2 (46:19):
Let's do that, man.
Speaker 11 (46:20):
Yeah, what I want to know is wanting to deliver
get the catfish?
Speaker 2 (46:32):
Yeah yeah, well of course. Yeah, the winter gets to
keep the fish and and the loser has to clean them.
There now, the steaks have just been raised because I can't. Man,
mm hmmm, I get it. Catfish will eat stinky, the stinkiest,
(46:53):
nastiest things. And there's there's one thing that I know
that catfish heat that I don't even want to talk
about because it's kind of nasty for the morning hour.
But yeah, you you don't have to use that stinky,
nasty stuff because kids are gonna be kids. They're gonna
get it all over themselves. And yeah, sure you can
have a towel, so you can. You can put a
(47:13):
towel on the kid's belt and little boys are gonna
wipe it on the fronts of their pants a towel.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the towel. Dad. That's why
there's this big giant chicken liver stain on the front
of my pants. And oh yeah when I when I
got in, I grabbed the back of your seat and
a lot of that stuff kind of got on your
(47:34):
head rest, so you might want to watch how you
sit down. And there were some that spilled out. I
brought the container back even though it had all that
just juice in it and a little bit of gizzard.
But I went ahead and brought it back, and I
thought we might use it again sometime. And it spilled
in the carpet in the back seat. Or hey, I
(47:56):
spilled a little vanilla extracting corn, or as my son
was doing when he got bored. He'd sit there and
eat some of the bait and it didn't hurt him
at all. He's eating a vegetable, which was hard to
get him to do as a kid. We got to
take a little break here at the top of the hour,
and on the way out, I'm gonna tell you about
Riceland Waterfowl Club. Riceland Waterfowl Club out of Eagle Lake,
(48:16):
one of the finest waterfowl operators, waterfowling operations at least
in Texas and maybe even over a broader area. This
is prairie hunting. Okay, this isn't flooded timber. This rice
land is owned by a guy named David Pruett. He
is a champion duck and goose caller and he works
all year round to make sure everybody who joins his
(48:38):
club has access to top quality duck and goose hunting.
Mostly duck hunting is what he does all through the season.
A lot of water, he told me the other day.
He's adding close to one thousand acres of water, close
to a thousand he's adding for next year. And of
course there will be blinds on there, and he keeps
his blinds way far apart, so if somebody has to
(49:01):
go into an area where someone else wants to also
get in, they can be wayt spread out. They're not
going to bother each other. And everybody who hunts on
his properties is either a guest or a member. That's it.
There's no guided hunting. There's no guide out there. With
four or five people from Montana who came down here
to shoot spoon bills, there are all people from around
(49:26):
here and their guests, and you want to bring in somebody.
If you're a club member, you can bring in somebody
from Montana or New York or wherever, and they're going
to have a great time. I've talked to him enough
times to know he's dead set on making good on
that promise to have really good duck hunting all through
the season. This is his fiftieth year in operation. You
(49:46):
can't stay in operation that long as a waterfowl operator
if you're not providing good quality experiences for your hunters.
If you didn't kill as me ducks as you wanted
last year, you might want to tee it up and
check out Riceland Waterfowl Club. Land Waterfowl Club dot com
is a website. Give give them a look Ricelandwaterfowl Club
dot com. You'll be glad you did. Hi, Welcome back.
(50:08):
Second hour of the program starts right now, and as
is traditional, we'll we'll deal with golf for a little bit,
and then I'll probably lean lean back into the world
of snakes maybe, or the world of fishing or taking
kids fishing. I got a couple of topics that came
up in that first hour that can be rehashed as
(50:32):
we go on. I cannot overlook though, a couple of
things that are going on. Well, First the CJ Cup,
the Byron Nelson. Then hold on while I'm while I'm
thinking about it, I want to go ahead and get
this other one up here. I've got to deal with
the inspirity. Disparity is going on right up there in
the Woodlands, and I didn't get to it yesterday, and
I'm gonna get to it. Well briefly. I did a
(50:53):
leaderboard yesterday and I'll do a little of that too.
I want to make sure that we cover both these
things totally different, totally different leader boards. I'll do this
verity first because it's right here in town, and if
what a beautiful day it would be to go watch golf.
Oh my gosh. The difference between yesterday is splitsh splash
all over the place and today is is going to
(51:16):
be like night and day and it's going to be
an absolutely gorgeous, comfortable day for all those guys to
go play golf and anybody who wants to go up
to the Woodlands to watch them do so. Mike Weir,
Mike Wair, and Ratief Goosen leading the way after the
first two of their three rounds for the tournament, they
both are at nine under par. Wye Yang is at
(51:38):
eight along with Miguel and hel Him Menez Fung change
Id at seven along with Steve Allen and Stuart Sink,
and then it goes from there. I feel confident that
it would take a herculean effort for one of those
sixes to pass everybody. Now there's three of them. I'll
read the names Billy Mayfair, Jodurant on Heilkaber and from there,
(52:02):
everybody's playing for a little bit bigger check. But it's
gonna be a banner day no matter what. It's going
to be an amazing day for golf. Up there, sixty
five degrees as we speak with a it says here
a southwest wind at four miles an hour. Maybe somebody
just walked by the weather vane a little too closely
(52:24):
in that direction a minute ago. I don't know that
it's a southwest wind. I don't think that's right. Okay,
let's go to the CJ Cup where the Byron Nelson
up there in at TPC Craig Ranchy McKinney. That is
where if you're if you'll recall from yesterday. Everybody was
trying to get finished with that second round and get
(52:45):
the third round started, and they did. They got it done,
and Scotty Scheffler walked off of there. He started the
day at eighteen under par shoots a oh just a
kind of a hoe Hummer sixty six. He is twenty
three under par. He's twenty three under par. He is
eight shots clear of Eric Van Royan and Adam Shank
(53:10):
and Ricky Castillo. Eight shots clear of the three who
are tied for second, not a one of whom has
a chance to catch. Scottie scheffer upset it and he's
not going to back off what I think he wants
to do because he took a few little risky shots yesterday.
(53:34):
And I think what he wants to do is win
by at least ten and who knows, maybe more. Maybe
he can get it to twelve or thirteen or fourteen
or whatever. But whatever it is, it's going to be
pretty impressive. The greatest margin of victory, by the way,
(53:55):
the greatest margin of victory ever in tour history was well,
guess who Tiger Woods in the two thousand US Open
at Pebble Beach. Tiger Woods won by fifteen shots. Now,
Scotty Scheffler probably isn't gonna get to a fifteen shot win,
(54:16):
but he's he's got a chance to get it to ten.
If he can go out and shoot sixty six again
five hunder par, that takes him to twenty eight. That
would mean that anybody who's gonna keep him from doing
that would have to shoot at least three under. And hey,
it's gonna be perfect conditions up there for golf, but
perfect for the field won't net them lower scores than
(54:40):
perfect for Scottie Scheffler. Scotty Scheffler is, after all, the
number one player in the world, and he is he's
ready to start winning in twenty twenty five. And unless
there's just some horrific train wreck in his game today,
he's going to be walking off with that trophy. I
(55:03):
don't I don't see how. I don't see how he
can do Otherwise. You got an eight shot lead over
three guys, and I don't see anybody on that list
of the next eight or ten players who really if
I'm Scottie scheffer there's nobody there that even concerns me.
(55:27):
There's it's not like he's been being chased by McElroy
and Speed. Jordan Speed's having a good tournament and I
heard some guy that talking on the PGA Tour Network
this morning actually about short game stuff, and they're still
calling Jordan Speed the best around the green on tour
right now. Scotti Scheffer might have something to say about that.
(55:48):
He tends to get us get the golf fall up
and down, so we'll see. I'm gonna watch some of
that this afternoon. I'm gonna try to do a little
fishing this afternoon too, and a little combo maybe fishing
and and working on my golf game because it's Ah.
I'm so frustrated now. I know how those people in
Utah who have you know, I can't make all my
(56:12):
clubs happy, or in all my clubs can't make me happy.
At the same time, It'd be like having fourteen wives
maybe be frustrating. Try to have a hard time keeping
one of them happy. Seven one three, two, one two

Speaker 4 (56:29):
I have.
Speaker 2 (56:32):
In golf and I'm not a I'm not a professional
instructor by any stretch of the imagination. I wouldn't dream
of teaching anybody anything about golf, maybe a little. If
I saw somebody doing something horribly wrong with a stance,
or with a takeaway, or maybe a putting stroke, something
(56:52):
like that. If they asked me for my opinion, I
might give it, but I would preface it with listen,
I'll tell you what I think, but I'll also recommend
that before you make any major changes to your swing,
you find somehow some way to get a lesson from
(57:14):
somebody whose business card says golf instructor, because that's where
you're going to get advice. You can trust you're not
going to get it from anybody like me. If you're
getting advice from a twenty handicap, they're going to teach
you how to be a twenty. I'm a ten right now,
and I'm disappointed in that. Honestly, through ten or eleven,
it's gone down south in a handbasket, and I'm not
(57:38):
really thrilled with that, and I'm working on it. I
want to bring it back down. I don't want to
make it higher so I get more strokes. I want
fewer strokes. I want a better game. By the way,
there was some video from Riviera Country Club out to California,
and if you haven't seen it, it's worth looking for.
There is a small plane that comes up the dog
(58:01):
leg of a fairway and toward the green complex it
looks like, and there's all these undulations and whatnot. But anyway,
this guy has zero power. His propeller is not moved,
a little single engine plane, and his propeller quit moving,
probably a long time ago, and he has just been
gliding toward the earth looking for a place to set
(58:23):
that thing down. And he actually manages a bumpy but
otherwise insignificant landing on that golf course. He dodges a bunker,
he banks off of a steep little push up of
dirt and turf and whatnot, and comes to a stop.
(58:45):
And the coolest thing about that is the comment I
saw on one of the notes about it. This guy
says something like, I pray I'm never that late for
a tea time, but I also pray for the means
to pull up this. What Hey, if I am, I
want to come rolling up sideways in an airplane and
(59:05):
just hop out, put my glove on and take a swing. Yeah,
I could do that. That would be very cool. Oh
my gosh, I'm gonna Frankie, I'm gonna go ahead and
take Bob real quick because he sat there a long time.
What's up, Bob?
Speaker 10 (59:19):
Not much?
Speaker 12 (59:20):
How you do it?
Speaker 2 (59:20):
I'm good man, Thank you.
Speaker 11 (59:23):
Hey.
Speaker 10 (59:24):
I heard you talking about I never gave.
Speaker 13 (59:26):
Instructions to anybody playing golf either, but when my son
and I would play, what I would do is help
him with courts management. Oh yeah, didn't mind, just didn't
mind up play his shot and where to go to Nash. Yeah,
that was the biggest thing, because you don't want to
chase someone's swing on the.
Speaker 2 (59:45):
Golf co oh god, no, no, no no. And I
hate it when people tell me. You know, Doug, I
was watching when you made that swing back there, and
here's what I saw, And like, dude, you're worse than me.
You're going to shoot one hundred, don't. I don't care
what you saw. You didn't see anything.
Speaker 13 (01:00:00):
Yeah, that's true.
Speaker 10 (01:00:01):
Can I share one more thing?
Speaker 4 (01:00:03):
Was?
Speaker 10 (01:00:03):
Yeah? Sure, it's about fishing.
Speaker 13 (01:00:05):
I heard you last week talking about when you're a kid,
throwing your T shirts out catching.
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
Oh yeah, little strips of white T shirt at night?
Speaker 10 (01:00:14):
Yeah? What years ago?
Speaker 13 (01:00:16):
And I'm talking about twenty thirty years ago. Rollover pass
We would fish under the lights, and if you didn't
have a white little fishy, you didn't catch anything.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
That's that's what was happening that night on the surf
side pier. If it wasn't white, they wouldn't bite. Man,
I just made that up. That's pretty game.
Speaker 13 (01:00:33):
That made me think of it, and I just wanted
to share that.
Speaker 2 (01:00:36):
Well, I appreciate it. Yeah, that's great, Thank you, Bob.
Speaker 5 (01:00:39):
It is.
Speaker 2 (01:00:39):
It is a beautiful d Yeah, all right, bye, play well, Bob.
That's where he's going. He's on the way to the
golf course. I'll bet all right. We got to take
a little break. Care on a minute and a half
or so long. And I apologie, I apologize, Frankie, sorry
about that. Man Bell Bell meat Market, Bell Bell meat Market.
Here's what reason to go out there. It's kind of
(01:01:02):
like going to a delicious place to buy delicious foods,
and then up on the countertops, there's always at least
one or two different flavors of their pecan smoked sausage
that you can sample a little toothpicks in little slices.
Every one of them's good. So far. I'm batting a
thousand on deliciousness with every one I pick up. Some
are a little more spicy than others. I'm not a
(01:01:22):
big spicy guy anymore. Used to be, but I'm not anymore.
But if you like that, man, they've got a ton.
I've got a neighbor who could eat fire probably, And
anytime I've been offered spicy sausages, I've brought it home
and given it to him Andre and he loves the
stuff absolutely. Pecan smoke barbecue served Monday through Sunday ten
(01:01:43):
to seven. That's seven days a week, lunch and dinner,
depending on what time you eat it, and you can
call it whatever you want. They've got pulled pork and
homemade hot dogs on that menu too, for the kids
or for you. Homemade hot dogs original with cheddar cheese.
Hamburger patties, check those out. Those are chuck Wagon patties. Okay,
there are half pound beef patties that are seasoned and
(01:02:07):
loaded with cheddar cheese. Absolutely delicious. They've got stuffed pork,
tender stuff, pepper stuff, bushrooms. Let Bellville Meat Market be
your backyard barbecue and block party headquarters. And with you
know what, with sinkle to myrow and tomorrow maybe you
drive out there. Today, make a list of what you
want to bring home and cook in the backyard tomorrow,
(01:02:28):
and then while they're boxing all that up for you,
sit out there on the patio and enjoy some of
that delicious barbecue. There's a plan. If you didn't have
a plan today, you got one now. Bellville Meat Market
is on Highway thirty six, about fifteen minutes north of Sealy,
fifteen minutes or so south of Hempstead and just waiting
for you to come in there and enjoy the deliciousness.
(01:02:50):
They say they take care of the greater Houston area.
Honest to goodness, it's probably half a Texas that goes
to Bellville Meat Market for their meat products because they're
that good. Belleville MeetMarket dot COM's website Belleville MeetMarket dot

Dougpike Show, Thank you for listening. I certainly do appreciate it.
Just got a notification from my ring doorbell that was
(01:03:13):
somebody at my door and or maybe it's a little
bit old. I'm not so sure, because when I looked
at it, it was me yesterday walking outside a little
tarty there wring aling. I got an email from Mark
with a book, a snake book. Actually it is the
(01:03:36):
hold on, let me see if I can get this
image back up? Where did it go?
Speaker 5 (01:03:39):
There?
Speaker 2 (01:03:39):
It is right there. It is a the Texas Monthly
Field Guide edition or I don't know. Let me put
my glasses on so I can read this title Field
Guide series Feel Guide to Texas Snakes by Alan Tennant,
with contributing authors John Whirler. My fifty plus audience certainly
(01:04:01):
would remember John Warler from the Houston Zoo and a
man named Bill Marvel. Marvel also obviously a snake expert.
And there are a lot of books out there on snakes.
And this is coming from the conversation I had with
Jericha Markle a little while ago about Texas snakes, specifically
snakes in this region. And there are just so many
(01:04:24):
interesting ones out there. And if you learn, if you
want to encounter snakes, which a lot of people do.
My buddy Chester Moore, the editor of Texas Fishing Game Magazine,
he goes looking for snakes. I kind of do. I'm
not obsessed with it anymore. I used to make specific
trips to go look for snakes, and you start, you
(01:04:47):
learn where to look and why the snakes go there
under different conditions, and you can find more than you'd think.
Actually around here, there are plenty of snakes in this region.
They just don't they don't just walk up and down
the sidewalk like we do. Okay, they're secretive little creatures,
(01:05:07):
and they tend to get out of the way. They
tend to And just like Jericha said, actually, if you're
walking and you see one and you just keep walking
by it and don't make any aggressive move toward it,
it probably will just freeze, thinking that it's its own
camouflage is keeping it from being seen, and that you're
(01:05:28):
not going to bother it, and therefore it's not going
to bother you. The only time snakes will bow up
on you is if they get cornered or if you
hurt them, or they at least perceive a threat of
being hurt. And that's no different than you and me.
I walk past people all the time on the sidewalk
(01:05:50):
and I don't bother them, and they don't bother me.
And that's the way snakes are. They're not gonna they're
not gonna give you any grief. But this book that
he said is one of many that are available. I
would reckon that you can find probably, i'd bet on
any given day at least a dozen Field Guides to
Texas Snakes in used bookstores, because after a while, once
(01:06:15):
you've gone through that book enough times, you've either learned
enough about snakes or got tired of learning about snakes,
and so you passed the book onto someone else somewhere else.
There was a box of books that I donated to
Goodwill recently, and by the way, it disappointed me because
those books, they were a lot of them, were very
(01:06:36):
nice books, several of them hardcover books with their original
jackets on them. They didn't have a lot of wear
and tear on them, they were in very good shape.
And when I handed the guy in the box of books,
he just there was a big ben sitting there with
all kinds of other stuff in it, and he just
dumped them in there, just turned them upside down and
dumped them in. So that's the last time I'm going
(01:06:57):
to donate books to Goodwill. I'll take them to the
secondhand bookstore. What's the name of that store, Frankie, do
you recall what is it besides half price half price books?
There you go, No, not besides half Price that is
the one I was thinking of. I just couldn't spit
it out. Yeah, half Price Books, they they don't give
(01:07:17):
you much. Frankly, I've dealt with them as well, but
they've got to make a profit to stay open, so
I don't really care. And the money I get for that,
I'll I'll buy my son a Hamburger or something like that.
But I do have some books at home that I
know are are worth some money, and I'm gonna look
for new homes for some of them as well. Seven
(01:07:39):
one three two seven ninety email on me, Doug Pike
at iHeartMedia dot com. I'll tell you what. We're gonna
take this break a little bit ahead of time so
that I can go to the internet and do a
little searching on something. On the way out. I'm gonna
tell you about Shooter's Corner down there at Palmer Highway
and twenty ninth Street in Texas City, been there forever,
in fact, it was That's where That's where the connection
(01:08:00):
was made for me with Many Lopez from El Kubano Cigars.
He frequents Shooter's Corner and is a friend of Jerry
TK and the two of them got to talking one time,
and all of a sudden, there's many in my inbox
wanting to talk to me. Shooter's Corner's been down there
a long time. That's Jerry and JTK. Jason's Jerry's son,
(01:08:24):
and both of them among the best gunsmith's I can
count on one hand in this region, if not the
whole state. Shooter's Corner is an old school gun store,
been there for forty plus years. That is what Jerry
and Jay do every day is just make sure that
anybody and everybody who needs something to enjoy the shooting
(01:08:45):
sports a little more today than they did yesterday can
find what they need. And in gunsmithing, I don't know
anybody who's helped me solve problems for more listeners than
Jerry TK. I've set people down there after they've been
to two or three different places and not gotten anywhere
with an issue with a gun. And Jerry knock on
(01:09:08):
wood every time every time I talked to him afterwards.
Oh yeah, I was able to do that, Oh yeah,
I was able to fix that. It wasn't what the
other guy thought. It was this or this or this.
And he starts talking over my head, but he takes
care of it. He takes care of my listeners who
have issues with their guns, Shooters Corner guns, Ammo reloading supplies, optics,
(01:09:31):
Camo cool mounts, and always people in there swapping stories
about shooting sports or hunting. And by the way, if
you wear a badge for a living, you get a
discount at Shooter's Corner, which I think is pretty cool.
The Shooters Corner TX dot com. The Shooters Corner TX
dot com. All right, let's get back to business here.
(01:09:54):
I got that taken care of, I got this taken
care of. I'm gonna go look at something real quick
that I didn't get to when I was wrapping up
that last segment. I'll do that later. Let's go back
to We've got to go back to fishing. I can't
help it. We've got to go back to fishing because
it's something that if you start, whatever age you start at,
(01:10:18):
and the conversation I had with Greg was so good,
so so good. Whatever age you start at, you can
continue to do it for the rest of your life.
It's even easier to do in seniority than it is
to go fishing. We got a call coming in there, Frankie.
If you can handle that for me, and I'm hoping
we can get that done. The same thing that happened
(01:10:38):
yesterday is happening now. It's a little the boards getting
a little wonky on somehow, We'll figure it out. Don't worry.
And what I'm trying to emphasize is that Greg has
an opportunity with his stepson, who is about he said
I think twelve if I recall, and the best thing
that the two of them can do is to get
(01:11:00):
a little bonding time in addition to actually going fishing.
Greg doesn't have to worry about being the expert. He's
already He's already told me and probably his step son
that he doesn't know that much about fishing. And that's
the first step toward learning together to become fishermen. Get
(01:11:21):
on and spend ten fifteen minutes, maybe just ten or
fifteen minutes online looking at YouTube videos, looking at this,
looking at that, and see if you can find places.
Go to the Parks and Wallache Department website, like I
was mentioning, try and find some public water around there,
Try and network a little bit with friends and see
if any of them know any places where the two
(01:11:43):
of them could go fishing. So you get that experience,
that bonding experience trying to become better fishermen. Then you
get the bonding experience over actually going, and then you
get it when you get home, either that evening or
maybe the next evening and kind of a recap meeting. Hey,
step son, let's sit over here and kind of figure
out what went right and what went wrong. And you
(01:12:05):
do that, and all of a sudden, you're just you
start catching fish, you learn more, and you become closer,
which is ultimately the way all of us, most of
us anyway, want a fish. I know a few guys
who like to fish by themselves, and that's fine, see
you later. But I enjoy having somebody fishing alongside me,
especially Joe dogget Night. When the two of us were
(01:12:29):
working at the paper, were the two most competitive guys
on the water. Wherever we went, it was good natured.
We weren't trying to beat each other out of money,
or out of notoriety or out of anything else. But
no matter what we said to each other, we were
keeping track of who was catching what. And there were
(01:12:49):
two goals. You were looking for the most and the biggest.
That's the way it kind of works. Out the most
and the biggest, and every now and then we'd go
for grand slams or weirdo stuff. By and large, it
was most and biggest. Let me go to let me
it's a Dave real quick. Hey day, what's up, buddy?
Good morning? How are you doing very well? How is
(01:13:12):
the shrimp undercover work going.
Speaker 12 (01:13:16):
Well? First of all, I'd like to say, I think
I get to the category doesn't fish well with others. Okay,
I like, I like my privacy fishing me versus the
fish rather than up. Oh yeah, okay, that's beside the point.
Everything's going very well. We had an excellent couple of weeks.
(01:13:39):
We got the story of the fish the trimp industry
is quite out to the New York Times and all
over Europe. We got along sort of a I guess
news story done by Channel four. And I think we've
got the BBC coming in.
Speaker 2 (01:13:56):
Isn't it wonderful?
Speaker 12 (01:13:58):
And it's actually making a pretty substantial difference Right now.
There is legislation that hopefully will get past.
Speaker 9 (01:14:06):
In the.
Speaker 12 (01:14:08):
In Texas ensuring authenticity on the menu. We have obviously
have stuff passed in Louisiana, and I just want to
say thank you. To all the news organizations, including yourself,
have made a big difference. If you don't get the
story out nothing, it doesn't exist, you know, So thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:14:31):
How happy, Dave, How happily surprised were you when that
New Orleans festival came up? What ninety percent legit?
Speaker 9 (01:14:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:14:40):
More than that.
Speaker 12 (01:14:42):
I was actually unbelievably well surprised because we've been putting
a lot of pressure on them and they had not
been responding. But obviously they weren't home the scenes, and
I'm very very proud of them. We just hope that
all the other festivals along the Gulf Coast and all
the restaurants start trying to support the industry that they
(01:15:04):
make an income out of. So again, now I was,
I was, I was very very very very very pleasantly
suppliet surprise. The Shrimp and Petroleum Festival have basically made
a statement in Louisiana that if anybody serves imported shrimp,
they'll be immediately escorted off the premises of life, which
(01:15:26):
is a lot different from what they said previously. And
hopefully the National Trip Festival and Gulf Shows will do
the same thing, and all other festivals that do this
type of stuff, you know, just that right, Yeah, it's
it makes it makes your it makes the whole event
(01:15:46):
a lot more authentic, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Yeah, absolutely, I do. I sure do. Yeah, thank you.
I'm pretty glad to hear from you. Man.
Speaker 12 (01:15:55):
Yeah, it's a great thing, and thank you again.
Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
My pleasure.
Speaker 12 (01:15:58):
What's your website again, Seed Consulting, Sea D Consulting, and
you'll see you'll see all the news stories and everything
like that there. But more importantly, just patter fishment on
the head because usually are quite short because they're old.
Speaker 2 (01:16:17):
Thank you, Dave. Yeah, audios. Yeah, that group does incredible work.
They've been single handedly going around the entire Golf and
East Coast making sure that that companies and restaurants who
say they're selling Golf cot or Atlanta locally sourced shrimp
(01:16:39):
are indeed doing that and not selling shrimp imported from
around the world. And it's okay to import shrimp. There's
nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with importing shrimp
at all. But just don't What they're trying to say
is you can buy and sell whatever shrimp you want
to use for your restaurant or your grocery store or
(01:17:00):
your festival or whatever, but just don't don't imply that
it's locally sourced, because the locally sourced shrimpers and fishermen
they're trying to make a living too, and they they
deserve to do that. And I think there's there's a
good movement, and there there's a little bit of a
lot more knowledge, certainly among the average people who are
(01:17:21):
consuming all these shrimp. And my hands in the air.
I love shrimp, I absolutely do, but I'd kind of
like to know where they came from. And I'm my
palette is not so sophisticated that I can tell the
difference immediately if I bite one. But the DNA doesn't lie.
And that's that's where just I just tell me what
I'm eating, Tell me what I'm eating. Let me get
(01:17:42):
the faux pro here. See what's on his mind? Faux pro?
What is up?
Speaker 5 (01:17:46):
Man? What is going on?
Speaker 8 (01:17:48):
I started to wondering if I should have come out here,
and it did not stuck too well.
Speaker 2 (01:17:51):
So I saw that picture of all those shed under
your boat.
Speaker 8 (01:17:54):
Oh my word, figure, I know, I knew my lure
was in there. So I think Stevie wonder to swim
around here and choke on said.
Speaker 2 (01:18:01):
Good lord, Yeah, you see see what I sent you back?
Speaker 5 (01:18:04):
Oh not, I've had chats with it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
I sent you a note. It just says for what
you need to do after looking at that image of
how many shatter under your boat? Says number one, throw
a cast net. Number two, open up faux pros, catfish
bait store, number three, get rich, number four, retire. It
would be that.
Speaker 5 (01:18:23):
I don't know if I could lift the cast it
out of the lake through that day.
Speaker 2 (01:18:25):
That's a good point. You might need a winch.
Speaker 8 (01:18:28):
I couldn't find my keys this morning, search and destroyed,
had and you looking, and went out to the garage
and laid on the back and deack of the boat.
Speaker 2 (01:18:34):
Well, of course, of course, but I saw.
Speaker 8 (01:18:36):
The boat in lake, parked the truck, and I'm walking
to the boat round and uh, you know you would
lock your truck all the way to the boat round.
My truck's not locked. I turn around, look at the truck,
the door still open. I'm like, okay, I don't know
about it.
Speaker 2 (01:18:46):
Yeah, you might have just pull on out and go
back to the house, take a nap, probably. So what
what's going on on Livingston right now? What's what's the
bike man.
Speaker 8 (01:18:56):
Right now that catfish or it's stupid. I mean, ye,
my buddies can go down there. He gets down there
right at daylight, fished to about nine thirty. They come
back in with anywhere from twenty five to fifty good
and it's just under under a corp right up against
the bridge, or just casting out real short using it,
you know, using the button throwing.
Speaker 5 (01:19:13):
Cast at, catching shed using cut shed or button chad.
Pretty simplest of simplest, basically.
Speaker 2 (01:19:20):
Getting easier than that, my goodness.
Speaker 5 (01:19:22):
Yea, yeah, the lakers up right now.
Speaker 8 (01:19:24):
I'm not here throwing a big bait of spinner bat
at cypress trees and grass beds. And then well I'm
doing that. I'm scoping outside. I'm kind of combination real
fishing and cheating, so.
Speaker 5 (01:19:34):
Seeing what I can do. But but it looks like
it looks like my coffee.
Speaker 8 (01:19:37):
I like a lot of creevy in my coffee, so
it look pretty much looks like coffee.
Speaker 2 (01:19:40):
So yeah, it's had a lot of rain come through there.
It's gonna be muddied up for a while.
Speaker 8 (01:19:45):
I got one frog hold on when to save for
last We got all this uh water wheeler. We call
it I call it alligator grass. I call it I
grew up on Lake Houston, so I call it Lake
Houston grass. Yeah, but uh, they'll get up in that
stuff pretty good here the next couple of days the
bass wheel. But right now, if you want to come
to the livey citing and just steal your freezing for
the catfish, it's it's It.
Speaker 5 (01:20:03):
Doesn't take a middle heavyweight to figure it out. So
would it be that guy you're talking to? That guy
be perfect?
Speaker 2 (01:20:09):
So yeah, I'm trying to help him. He's not going
to drive all the way from Memorial up to Lake
Livington to catch catfish with his bill steps. But that
I know, Mary Joe, I'm one hundred well, I'm ninety
nine percent sure that Mary Joe Peckham's on that list
of lakes that gets stocked every couple of weeks with
a few hundred catfish. And if he'll just go over
(01:20:30):
there and too, well yeah they'll get rainbow trout. But
that's a long ways down the line from now. He's
he's struggling now to get his steps on on some fish.
And like I said, he just needs to just relax
a little bit and and concede that neither one of
them knows very much, and then go about learning it together.
And that's more bonding time.
Speaker 4 (01:20:49):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:20:50):
Oh glad if people wanting to drive the livy so
I know he come up here once it Uh, you know,
there's always Huntsville State Park. They got a good fishing pier.
All you need is you probably do your corn thing
or not crawler off the pier.
Speaker 5 (01:21:00):
Oh yeah, and there's there's.
Speaker 8 (01:21:01):
Plenty of catfish, play a big crappie, plenty of perch,
plenty here, plenty.
Speaker 5 (01:21:05):
Of everything in that lake.
Speaker 8 (01:21:06):
And I know the uh if I remember correct, the
record was caught off that pier a guy with a
goldfish under the bobber Man.
Speaker 4 (01:21:15):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
Yeah, the right pier at the right time, they're gonna
be there. That's something else.
Speaker 5 (01:21:20):
Yeah, but I'll leave I'll leave you with this little note.
All right.
Speaker 8 (01:21:24):
I got on I got on a website yesterday looking
looking at a diabetes website. Okay, and and and the
first thing that asked me, will you accept cookies?
Speaker 5 (01:21:31):
I'm just trying to figure out that's a true question
or not.
Speaker 2 (01:21:34):
That's probab. I don't know where you found that, but
that's pretty good absolute cookies all right, man, okay, yeah,
thank you for us. I'll see audios. Oh my word,
will you accept cookies? I always accept cookies. Seven on three,
seven ninety Email me Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com.
(01:21:56):
We'll take this break here and come back in a
few minutes to wrap her up for this Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:22:02):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
The Kentucky Derbys in the books, We've got the Astros
at one ten, We've got the Rockets tonight. I want
to say it's seven point thirty round there right here
at home, and I'm gonna I don't care how I
don't care if they go into one hundred overtimes. I'm
not gonna turn off the TV until I see the
end of that game, unless it's a blowout. And I man,
(01:22:24):
I hope they get I hope they get past the Warriors. Nothing. Well,
some things would make me happier than that, but not many.
It would take a lot to make me happier than that.
I for two reasons. Number one, I want the Rockets
to win. Number two, I want the Warriors to lose.
We'll take a little break here on the way out
black Horse Golf Club. Take two ninety to Fry Road,
(01:22:45):
hang us south. Drive a couple of miles, you'll see
golf course on your west hand side, your right shoulder,
and then of your body. Just look out the just
look out the window, look out the pass and your
window you'll start seeing golf course. And then when you
you go, oh, there's golf course on both sides of
the road. Turn on your blinker, your right blinker, your
(01:23:05):
west blinker, and then put on your blank breaks and
just take it right. You could almost do it with
your eyes closed if you've done it enough times like
I have. Take are right, go through the gate, and
from that point forward, anybody you see who's wearing a
name tag is there to help you. And that goes
for everybody in the pro shop, it goes for everybody
in the grill, it goes for everybody driving around on
(01:23:27):
a big beverage cart. They're gonna want to help you
as well. And then if it's a serious issue, you
may have to go down to the other end of
the range and get some golf instruction. That wouldn't hurt
you at all. They changed in it this year. North
and South courses now are not both daily fee. The
North course still the same. You can just make a
(01:23:48):
tea time anytime you want to to go play that
North course. The South course is now private, and there
are membership options that not only get you access to
that along with the other members, but also access to
Blackhawk Country Club, to Golf Club of Houston's two courses.
So you're essentially getting five courses for the price of one,
(01:24:11):
and they're all fought. If you know these courses, you
know they're all gems. They really are. And there's always
somebody out there who's willing to help you navigate that
membership option stuff, and I'd love for you to try it.
Craig Hicks the GM out there, also, by the way,
an avid hunter and fisherman, So if you ever get
a chance to meet him, first of all, tell him
(01:24:31):
I said hello, and then second ask him if he's
caught any fish lately, and then in wintertime ask him
about if he's been back home to go hunting. I
need to take him hunting here somewhere. We need to
talk about that. I'll do that. Black Golf Club dot
com is a website. They've got all kinds of new
stuff going on out there. I hope you'll get out
there and find out about it. Black horse Golf Club

dot Com nine fifty one on Sports Talk seven ninety
The Dougpike Show. Thank you for listening. I really do
appreciate it. Let me go up here and click a button,
and with that button, I'm gonna bring up Tony Box.
What's going on? Tony Box?
Speaker 10 (01:25:06):
Morning, Doug, Good morning man. The tenth we have our
Sapri Club International.
Speaker 2 (01:25:11):
But here it comes just like you can't can't hold
it back now, can you?
Speaker 10 (01:25:16):
Oh? I told one of you guys, this is gonna
be here with we're ready or not.
Speaker 5 (01:25:19):
We better be ready.
Speaker 2 (01:25:22):
You are ready. I know you, man, You've dotted all
your eyes and crossed all your te's.
Speaker 10 (01:25:27):
I tell you what, it came together better this year
than I had ever hoped for. But we've got some
things on here that are not hunting items that I
think some people might like. We're gonna raffle off the
ladies stayless and go rolllex.
Speaker 2 (01:25:38):
Oh my goodness, look at you.
Speaker 10 (01:25:40):
We're gonna go into auction off a lady's let's see
no fur vest? Yes, oh wow, okay, and that will
be fitted for the buyer.
Speaker 2 (01:25:50):
That's pretty cool. Yeah, you stumbled on some pretty neat stuff.
Man out of the ordinary for sure.
Speaker 10 (01:25:57):
You know, if you can't have a little something for everybody,
what's the point.
Speaker 2 (01:26:00):
What's the point of even doing it? Dog on it He.
Speaker 10 (01:26:03):
Had somebody ask me, why are y'all going to raffle
off this watch? I said, because I don't want just
the guys in the deep pockets to be able to
get something rifle years back on a raffle that I
would have never been able to afford at that time.
So I tried to give everybody a shot at some
of this.
Speaker 2 (01:26:20):
That's awesome, Tony. Yeah, that's a good idea, man, little
something for everybody. Keep everybody in the game, man, You know, if.
Speaker 10 (01:26:27):
You run across dogget somewhere. Told him that we might
have a chair for him.
Speaker 2 (01:26:30):
Really, Yeah, all right, I'll let him know.
Speaker 10 (01:26:33):
I just we get in touch with him.
Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
Yeah, I'll tap I'll tap him and see what retire
right to. Yeah, I'll find him for you. Don't worry.
Speaker 5 (01:26:45):
Old.
Speaker 10 (01:26:46):
Old is the optimium word.
Speaker 5 (01:26:47):
There, too.
Speaker 2 (01:26:48):
Old. Oh my god, man, hey, I you know, I
he and I spent so much time outdoors together, and
I always used to joke with him about being ten
years older than me. And that was a long time ago.
When I still had all kinds of tread on my tires, man,
and all of a sudden, I go, oh, man, I
kind of pumped the brakes. Now, I know how Joe
(01:27:10):
felt when he was my age, and I understand why
I could, for a while at least run a little
circles around him. He stayed. He stayed pretty fifth though.
He's in pretty good shape. I think I haven't talked
to him in a week or two.
Speaker 10 (01:27:24):
Well, I don't know about his shape, but at least
he's getting around.
Speaker 2 (01:27:26):
Oh, heck, Katy, he's getting around.
Speaker 10 (01:27:29):
I know. Last time one hundred with Bristo, I went
over and grabbed a bag of dee hoys, and he
just kind of looked at me and he said, you
can do that for me. Yeah, And I didn't understand
at that time what he meant.
Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
Yeah you do now, though, don't you.
Speaker 10 (01:27:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:27:41):
I did, Yeah, buddy, that's why, man, my son. If
it wasn't for him, there was the first waterfowl hunt
we made together, just the two of us, an afternoon
hunt out in on the kind of way out on
the northwest side of the prairie, of the Katy Prairie.
If it hadn't been for him, I don't think we'd
have gotten back to the car because he he he
(01:28:03):
piled it. I put it all on, most of it
on my back going out because he was still pretty young.
But once we got out there, and once we got done,
he he manned up a little bit and and lugged
a bunch of that stuff back, or we might have
still been there picking stuff up. He is, he's a
good kid to uh.
Speaker 10 (01:28:22):
To keep everybody reminded, this is not is not just
about hunting Africa or foreign places. We've got six very
fine North American hunts and our auction good and certainly
worth looking at. And if you can't attend, you might
go to online auction s CI Houston chapter and look
them up.
Speaker 2 (01:28:38):
Yeah, that's that's a good point to make, Tony. Because
Safari Club International. I've had so many people call over
the years or email me and say, well, yeah, that's
a cool thing, man, but I don't I don't go
on Safaris. Well, that's just it's a name, and it's
it's people who yeah, yeah, it's just honey, and that's
that's what it is. And there's great hunts all over
the place of Aila. Well, there's great there's great stories
(01:29:02):
to be told. Connections. Boy, the connections you can make
at this place are gonna be awesome.
Speaker 10 (01:29:08):
We will have some outfitters there talking about their operations.
Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
Sure, no doubt.
Speaker 10 (01:29:15):
We're already intending to expand next year. And I think
it will even be that much more surprising of what
we're going to do. But more to come on that.
Speaker 2 (01:29:23):
As Yeah, let's just let's let get let's get one
horse out of the barn first. So are there are
there tickets left still? The seats to come in and
eat and enjoy.
Speaker 10 (01:29:32):
I've got about fifty seats left.
Speaker 2 (01:29:34):
Okay.
Speaker 10 (01:29:35):
I've already had people all we're gonna pay when we
get there, And I said, well, okay, but I want
you to understand there'll be a point that I will
turn people away.
Speaker 2 (01:29:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:29:44):
Yeah, you know we're filled up. Sorry, we're seting everybody
we can feed. And I've had one guy said, well
what if I come after dinner. I said, well, you know,
it's still gonna be a feed to get in the door.
Understand this, but uh, I'll see what we can do
at that point. It depends. You know, I'm gonna cut
it off for about two hundred and fifty people. Yeah,
and we're getting very close to that number.
Speaker 2 (01:30:04):
Okay, well, good for you.
Speaker 10 (01:30:06):
Everybody has taken is a member of SCI and they
get the Safari Times. Two issues back there was a
lady on the front cover with a noose in a snowstorm.
She's gonna be there, bring your Safari Times when we'll
get her.
Speaker 2 (01:30:18):
Besign that that's pretty cool. All right, Hey, Tony, I
got to run, man, You hear the music just like
I do. Buddy. It's always a good talk to you.
Thank you, sir, Yes, sir, thank you. All right, we
got to run on out of here and out out
of the building and into an absolutely drop dead gorgeous day.
I hope all of you can get outside this afternoon
and do something you enjoy, no matter what that is.
(01:30:39):
You go catch a little fish, go snake hunting, do
whatever you want to do. Just get outside and enjoy
yourself safely. I'll see you Tuesday on fifty plus over
on KPRC. Right back here on Saturday at seven on
