Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, second hour starts now.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Thank you all for listening. I certainly appreciate it. And
in this second hour, as promised, we're gonna tee up
Art Strickland and.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
See what's going on up there at Beth Page Black.
Have they started taking the bleachers down yet?

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Art? The old aolo A can't? They're already going early
this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Oh boy, oh boy? Is Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
If you're looking for a bright side, and I'm not
sure there is one, but when you get beat this thoroughly,
there's not one or two things that went wrong to change.
You know. It's been a total domination. And yeah, you know,
I don't even know where to start. If you're the
PGA of America, I don't even know where you start,

(00:46):
you know, say what do we need to do? Uh?
For Ryder Cups. It's just been in a domination for
the Americans from almost the first shot.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
It really was. Yeah, you're exactly right there. I can't
find any real highlights.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
If you want to get nitpicky, I would have to
look at the putting that we were doing.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
We we just didn't make very many putts, and and.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yeah when we did, and they, you know, they made
one off top of it. Yeah, you know, Scotty Jeffer
makes about a twenty foot four yesterday and then your
pants cover them up. But yeah, I guess you'd have
to start with, you know, world number one. How this
player on the planet, Yeah, going, and you know they've

(01:34):
only played the Ryder Cup now for promost, you know,
one hundred years or so, there's never ever ever been
a world number one player, go and four to start with.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Ever, that's an interesting stat right there, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
So that you know, if I'm Scotty and I saw
I'm paired up the Controy this morning, or you know,
I got to be thrilled because that's really my only chid.
You know, hard to believe that it's gotta go oh
in five, Oh my god, you know, so wait he
has a chance of some kind of salvation. But or

(02:12):
it's just been ugly really from the word go.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, late yesterday, when it started getting just more and
more parent that we were getting pummeled, I felt like
our guys, I don't want to say they gave up,
but most of them, looking at them, you could just
tell they were just going through the motions. They wanted
off that golf course, didn't they.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
And you know, this is really one of the fundamental
problems you have, that how do you get Americans to
care about something they don't care about for two years? Yeah, Hey,
it's Runner Cup week. You really need to care this week,
and they haven't cared for tooth And somebody made a
great point and we should try this at the Houston Open.

(02:54):
You know, in April, you go and ask any American
what their Ryer Cup record was, they either say I'm
not sure, I don't know, or you know, it's okay.
If you ask any European what their Ryder Cup record was, okay,
exactly what it was, exactly when they played, exactly how

(03:14):
the macus went. And to me, that's just the biggest difference.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, it is. You know what.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
I heard that same that same talk, and I believe
it was on PGA Tour Network probably this past Sunday
morning when I was coming in.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
That that same feeling that that we don't care. Just
like you said, we don't care for two years and
then all of a sudden we all have to care.
And the people who are there, the people who are
there dressed in the red, white and blue, they care
a lot, and their their level of care is amplified
I think by the availability of alcohol a little bit,

(03:52):
but none of that.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Don't you know anybody who has paid attention you could
see that coming. Yeah, you know, the dour beer is
not going to slow anybody down. You know, there was
a ton of police there. You can't say there weren't.
There wasn't a police prison there. Sure we was. And
you know the only other thing you could do that

(04:14):
you haven't done is shut off alcohol hotels. But I
can promise you that won't happen because this is the
PGA of America's money maker. Someone told me one time, Doug,
and you may have heard this. The PGA of America
loses money for three years and then when they host
a home runner company make it all back and they

(04:35):
have enough to fund them for the next four years.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
You know, the crowds have been huge here. I mean,
you know, for a peek down that we've we've seen
the crowds have really been large. And you know, so
Pj's making tons of money. I can promise you that.
But it's just an ugly seen and you know, I
mean second guess is what media does. But maybe play alternate.

(05:02):
You know, we talked about this yesterday once the last time,
you and I quite alternate shot. So maybe you know
what's for two weeks, Let's have a training camp and
do nothing but play alternate shop. How about just.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
How about just have a couple of tournaments leading up
to the Ryder Cup where you play Ryder Cup format. Yeah,
let's some of these guys team up and get comfortable
with it.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
And you know, we and you know, Keagan got all
the players as at fors Andrew's wife's having a kid.
Very inconvenient, but uh, you know, I got all the
players to NAPA and they played in Scotty w Nappa. Yeah, yeah,
you know, but you're right, it's not Ryder Cup format.
It's certainly not alternate shot. I just you know, it's

(05:54):
a you know the word, and you know, I think
we talked about this. Obviously, they're going to Ireland in
a couple of years, and yes the afternoon I met
with the Irish Minister for Sport and Culture and he
said they expect, you know, thirty percent of the crowd,
uh next to in two years to be from Americans.

(06:14):
So you know, there's gonna be a lot of Americans there.
But maybe what we do is we get over there.
We play Ryer Cup format, but you know, getting people
to care and that's why, you know, and you really
grant me that straws when you get beat this badly.
But maybe having a guy like a Patrick Reid who

(06:36):
does care about the Ryder Cup, maybe having him on there,
you know, I mean, Scotty is going to be disappointed
about by this week, but he's not going to sleep
over it, you know, because he uh, you know, Scotty's
year has been great because he's dominated all year. Well
and you know, as uh Packer won the famous week said,

(07:00):
can anybody tell me what Jack's Ryder Cup record was?
You can't, but you know Jack one eighteen majors. Everybody
knows that. Yeah, so you know, that's kind of where
we are. And you know, hopefully today doesn't get out
of hand with their outing behavior. You know, you may
have seen the Peachy of America fires or DJ on

(07:24):
the first hole and I didn't even know we had
a detail the provolve but fired him, you know, for
we'd Evolver chance and oh yeah, I'm sure that's the
way to go. Just well, a lot of people, a
lot of people dressed up and think the best man
I saw today yesterday Hug was the guy I had

(07:44):
a big sight. Is that the United States undefeated in
World Wars and had nineteen seventeen nineteen forty five, which
we're just all very true. We're just here's a Ripper Cup,
not so much.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Oh many A question for you, and I think I
know the answer.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I if the Ryder Cup is gonna maintain its relevance
and become more important, it has to become more important
to these players, why aren't we doing more match play
during the PGA Tour season? And I think the answer
is because you can't. You can't tell when it's gonna end.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
If you got a.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Day that goes like Thursday, Thursday afternoon or Friday afternoon,
went the matches are over before all the TV.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Commercials get to run. And is that?

Speaker 2 (08:31):
I mean that's a it's a revenue thing, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
It's a TV thing for sure. I think I think
you might remember that the PGA Championship. Yeah, absolutely, they
they ended that because you know what, the best players there. Uh.
I think that you know, they're talking about bringing the
Austin tournament back and uh maybe making that match play,

(08:56):
which certainly I think would be good would probably hell,
but yeah, it's just, uh, this is not the format replay, right,
and that played great. There's you know one of the
one of the cliches and sports is that the best
team didn't always win. Well, I guarantee you the best
team has won this week, Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
And if you if we talk about bringing these things
back to make it more relevant and bring match play
back to do this and do that, we're only bringing
it back so that it helps us once every two years.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Is that really worth it? I don't think they'll do
it for that.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Yeah, I think you're fat. And you know, we win
the President's Cup, but that's really more of a core
by exhibition. Yeah, you're you know you've been over to
Europe before. Uh, I've been a lot. You know, match
players in their blood. I mean easy percent of the
the golf plaint over your is match play. The only

(09:59):
people and I'm guilousy of this for sure, but the
only people that really keep score and God over Eurek
or Americans. So I see, most guys couldn't even tell
you what's they shot because they get quite much. Boy. Yeah.
So and then there what you know ory is you know,

(10:20):
I guess the biggest disappointment is I really thought Scotty
would pay like glory. Laury is quite tremendous. I mean,
you expect that, and the fact that you know you're
worry Number one, the hottest player on the planet has
come oh and four. It's just bad point. I talked

(10:40):
to a coach yesterday, Randy Smith. You know he's been
he's been a coach since he was like fix years old.
Randy's from West Texas. He did tell you what he thinks.
He's not worried about anything. He said, Randy, what happened?
He goes one of those weeks, Baba, one of those weeks,

(11:02):
and that's that's kind of it.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Exactly right.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Yeah, and and true to form, all those guys, every
one of them is gonna wake up tomorrow morning and go, Okay,
where are we going this week?

Speaker 1 (11:14):
And it'll be it'll be behind him.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
I don't think they're gonna I don't think they're gonna
let it bother them at all.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
I really don't.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
Maybe Keigan will. And you know, I mean, when you
keep when you get beat that bad way, you know,
one thing didn't make a difference. But you know, I
think Keegan will always second get Maybe I should have
picked my belt.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Well, yeah, I think.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
That that's gonna be Keegan is you and know and
and I would have made a difference. I don't think
so still would have gotten to beat. But I think
for Keegan's piece of mind, he's always because what's space it?
You know, he is the white we's cover to make
another writer or cup team. What he did this year
was unbelievable, but that's in two years. It's very doubtful

(12:01):
when you see that from Keeton. So I think he
probably always wonder what would have happened if I had
played on this theme? And you know, hindsight call, you
know these guys back out there. You know it's been
a disaster really and uh, you know, really a disaster

(12:22):
if you're a ticket broke. I don't know if you
saw that, the tickets for days, but you know, the finals,
the singles are the highlight event. Yeah, should be down
to three hundred dollars on the secondary market.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Down to three hundred, good lord, I wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
I wouldn't pay three hundred to be out there today.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Yeah, from a faith of seven fifty and gone for
a thousand. So a friend, you know, with the art
of golf travel. We take people in a lot of places.
And I took four guys to the writer call it
four years ago and had a funny text me yesterday.
He said, Man, I'm really glad I went of core
lasted four years because that was a great trip that

(13:04):
I wouldn't pay anything to go this year.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
No way, man our Strickland, thank you so very much.
Uh you got probably got early dismissal today.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
I would imagine, yeah, you know, uh, if you look
at the if you look at the matches, you know
Wolf Donald, who has done just everything right as captain,
he is very front voaded.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Uh, he's really front voaded the matches. He's going for
ere we knockout you. Rory's playing in the third or
I think the fourth match, and John Ron's playing early.
So Rory would like to have a little I mean,
uh wc. Donald would like to have one a proper
uh kee and crumpets by this afternoon if you could.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
He'll probably be very comfortably on his private jet and
on his way back home.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
Indeed, ye all right. The mine used to saying, dog,
I get paid the same winteral movies. So that's all I'm.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
Thinking that's exactly right man.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
Thank you, art Hey, thank you very much. Yes, all right.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Trickling there from the art of golf, he does. He
does some little trips with people and if you're interested
in something like that, he's pretty good at putting them together.
