Speaker 1 (00:02):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Show TATO three at ach Town. Good morning, and welcome
to a Monday edisue of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
This is Sports Talk seven ninety where we are here
to entertain, inform, infuriate being being. Ross Boll have had
our separate issues this weekend on the social platforms. Uh, yeah,

(00:28):
I guess I got into nothing. Twitter fights, Twitter squabbles. Yeah,
it's fine, and I muted everyone. Mute button is your friend, folks.
I'm gonna mute more. In twenty I've got over twenty
one hundred accounts muted. I've blocked over ten thousand people.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Wow. Yeah, I'm proud, so real quick on this.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Not that I wanted to hurt the show with this,
but I have a lot of bot accounts that follow
me and I don't like them, so I've blocked them immediately.
And Igar and I figure out how does this happen
the people that are bots that follow me, and I
don't want to throw somebody on the bus, so I'm
not going to do it. But another member of the
Houston sports media follows these people, and that's how they

(01:08):
must follow me.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
He follows them back? Correct?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Is you know always says if somebody follows you, it'll
say followed by something. No, this is you know, I okay,
and you go to their page, but they're following you
as they follow suggestion because that person follows you back. Yeah, okay,
And I'm like, I want to reach out of this
media person. I want to say, why are you following
these bots? Okay? Because if I unfollow him, then I

(01:33):
got a shot at getting rid of some of these people.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I don't think, So just leave them be, Matt. The
bots aren't going to do anything to you. But I
like it.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
I like an organic number. You like to keep it natural. Correct, Okay,
that's right? Wow, last night what It's not often you
see two coaches and let's see one, two, three, five
players get tossed.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
I lost track after a while. I think it was fun.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Well, it was three on the side of the rockets,
Van Vliet and Jalen Green and then of course a
men Thompson who's probably going to be facing more than
an ejection. I guess that the NBA will be suspending
him for the takedown of one Tyler Hero.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
I mean, he flipped him down like a rag doll.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
That was impressive strength shown by by one of Men Thompson.
I let me tell you about Ai Men Thompson. He's
becoming one of my favorite players on the team. I
might have to put him number one right now if
we're doing like week to week power rankings. First of all,
he's a good kid. Number two, he works incredibly hard.
He does the little intangibles. Shooting still is a little

(02:38):
bit of an issue, but it's better, so hopefully progression
is where you want to go. Will they ever be
a knockdown, drag out forty percent perimeter shooter from three?
I don't think so. But if he gets to say
in the thirty four to thirty five rings, will be respectable.
But how more than Jalen Green?

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Right now?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
You let me finish? Oh sorry, but he can defend
four positions three extraordinarily well and against bigger power forwards.
Is gonna have some issues, but one through three there
is nobody in the NBA he's afraid of guarding.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Now.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Tyler Herro last night was unguardable like he's typically been
against the Rockets, hitting one three after the other. He's
climb up the ruck. Haywood high Smith is was hitting
basket up. That's some kid in a high school on
a in a basketball movie. I wish he was Smith
the basketball star. He wore over twenty four last night
for the Miami. He had some big baskets. And then

(03:32):
Nikola Jovich not to be confused with Nikola Jokic. Yes, Mangin,
it's it's a play by play man's nightmare, to be
honest with you. He was hitting shots all over the place.
Kevin Love, who didn't play in the previous four games,
started each of the first and the third quarters. It
was an odd graduated high school with Jimmy Carter still
in the league.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Rip Jimmy Carter. Believe it not today?

Speaker 2 (03:54):
One FI today. Uh So the heater and average basketball
team that can that have some big wins and their
playoff tested and Eric Expulsive is one of the probably
fifteen greatest coaches as so says the NBA in the
history of the NBA. And they won the basketball game
yesterday and it got very testy. And I'm just going

(04:15):
to say this because I need to be somewhat careful
on this, So I'm going to be as polite but
as to sink as I can. And so you know
how I feel. I believe the NBA referee is the
hardest officiated thing to do in sports today. First, hol

(04:36):
it's forty eight minutes, up and down the floor, up
and down the floor. It's the NBA is a fluid
game with a college basketball game is chopping, stoppage and
all of it. I mean it's not that basketball's college
basketball is easy. I'm just saying, if you're going to
take everything every started officiating, Football is one play at
a time. Baseball is one pitch at a time. You
get a chance to rest. I mean, you don't get
you don't get to go on the bench. You don't

(04:56):
get to sit down for twelve minutes, you get in
foul trouble. You're not sitting for a floor. You have
to phisiate. And I think, frankly, a lot of officiating
bashing is the low hanging fruit. I listened to a
lot of my counterparts in the NBA, and they spend
extraordinary long amount of time bashing officials, where I think
it hurts your credibility of a broadcast.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
That's just my own personal thing.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
With that being said, there's only real I don't have
a tremendous amount of respect for Mark Davis. When Mark
Davis calls a game, something's going to go sideways now,
and perhaps his defense, he had two externarily young officials
working with him yesterday. I believe the third guy was
a rookie. The other guy was probably the second or

(05:42):
third year guy. So there is maybe some of the
on the official that's been there. I've done NBA finals,
I've been calling games for twenty years. I got two
guys a less than three years experience. Maybe I've got
to take over a game. But if you had asked
both sides, both Miami and Houston after the game, they
felt like the game was clunky from an officiating standpoint.
There are a lot of inconsistencies. Add on top of

(06:04):
the fact that in the NBA and the sport of
basketball rosters, you notice you can blank talk a lot
because there's no helmet on. You're on the floor for
long periods of time. You run by the bench, like
if you want to blank talk when you're in baseball,
when you hit a home run, you can really only
shout at the dugout. If you're rounding first base or

(06:25):
rounding third you're next to the post to the opposing benches,
and talking to guys literally every every other trip down
the floor. Right, m hm. So there is going to
be more blank talking in basketball than there is any
other sport, not not even closed football is probably second,
but basketball is number one. Yes, So at some point

(06:47):
when you blank talk for a while, it can just
be good fodder, interesting, comical, loose, and then sometimes it
probably gets more personal that should have been. And clearly
last night Tyler Herro was saying some things that probably
drew the ire of the Houston Rockets and of course
the second year player, him and Thompson, and that's when
the men went with the hip toss on a hard
concrete car on a what was it park parquet or

(07:09):
a hard court or what floor?

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Hard floor? And as you said, he's got grown man strengths.
That was he made that look easy.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
That was a hip toss that I think wrestlers in
the WWE would be jealous of.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
It.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Look like they're practicing in judo class. And it's funny
because I was watching emy Adoka and Ben Sullivan and
his assistant coach get tossed. He May had to get
held back. So I'm watching them cross half court and
e May was really mad and then I hear a
whistle and then the next thing I see, because I'm
shielded by the bench of the Miami is I see

(07:43):
Thompson go down and I'm like, oh, this is bad. Well,
he went down because he was busy flipping over Tyler hair.
And then Jalen Green got involved, Terry Rozier got involved,
ejections galore, and that what a turn. It could have
been a very interesting last minute of the game became
basically free throws left and right, and the Rockets on

(08:05):
inability to shoot free pointers and make printer shots. In
the fourth quarter, alprin ching Gun, who was just about
automatic in the first half, was largely not a part
of the offense in the second half. I think probably
because of Miami did that bamount of bio can do
those things to you. And the Rockets lose their second
consecutive home game to a playoff team. Miami's not great,
but they're a playoff team, yes, starting this homestand we
we've been mentioning it, marking it on the calendar. Five

(08:28):
straight games against playoff eligible teams at home. How are
they gonna do? I was hoping for three and two
are better? Well, they got to win the next three starts.

Speaker 6 (08:37):
General.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
First, it's no looking danchic against the Mavericks. Still have
Kyrie Irving, Yeah, he's still good. Will you have you
will not have Naji Marshall to fight with either, so
he won't be unavailable.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
I believe paj Washing be back for the Mavericks. And
then you have it because Najie Marshall. We got enough fight.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, people can throw hands in the NBA trying. Everybody's
saying this on Twitter. Oh the NBA. So the ratings
are low, so they started a bunch of fights get
the ratings back up. I mean it's helping on social medialy.
I don't know if it works in the eighties and nineties.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
Yeah, why not? That's right, that's right.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
And then you have the Boston Sellics coming into Tay who,
by the way, lost last night to Indiana, so got
something on that. And then you close things out with
forty year old Lebron James if he's not injury managing
like Jimmy Butler was last night. Yeah, no, Duncan Robinson,
No Jimmy Butler and Tyler. Hero goes off like he

(09:34):
has unfortunate against the Rocket before rockets have lost down
I think nine straight games to Miami, and at least
they've they've snapped the Warriors curse, so the heat curses next.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Well, we got one word. They're going down there in February.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
So all right, on the radio program today, Demiko Ryan's
are gonna speak at twelve fifteen today, I cannot believe
there is anybody that's suggesting the Texans rest their starters
this week.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Yeah, I just said it, and I'll explain more coming up.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Look at this guy still got it seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety on Twitter at sports Empt,
at Sports Harvey, and at connor Ney McGovern. Today is
also a theme day for us. Today is the best
moment in twenty twenty four Houston sports and the worst moment.

(10:28):
We'll compile a list. We don't do the list radio,
But okay, it's December thirty.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
What are you gonna do?

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Yeah, because I think you guys briefly brought this up
on Friday show. Yes briganically it can and briefly meaning
I listened for like three minutes. Thank you, man, I
appreciate you're welcome. Uh.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
And then so I really want to know.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
I don't even know if there's a is there a
definitive best I don't think a definitive, but there's a
number one in my mind until it gets unseated by
something else.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
Okay, So if you.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Would like to tell us what the best moment of
the year in sports in Houston, something involving I don't know,
uh oh Ohio State beating Michigan again or no Michigan
meeting house. That's not the best point. I'm talking about
Hugh Hughes got involved in Houston College or pro Houston
Sports team, right like Shay Wickham getting four errors in

(11:15):
a game. It was Houston Sports, the Houston Dash beating
somebody that would be you know, I think they did
well this year. Okay, but my point is it's got
to be it's got to have Houston somewhere in the
in the in the in the conversation seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety believe it or not, today
is that one fifty rip?

Speaker 3 (11:33):
We got a lot of rips.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Greg Gumbel passed away from CBS, longtime NFL uh Well
sports broadcaster, first African American.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
To call Super Bowl, to call two of them.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Jimmy Carter passed away yesterday at the age of one hundred.
And Linda Lavin, who was Alice on the very popular
show in the late seventies and eighties. Alice, Linda Lavin
passed away this morning. So she was the one. She
was the housekeeper for the Ready Munch. No, that was
that was just Alice of the Rady. Alice was. She
divorced her husband, moved to Phoenix. She wanted to be

(12:07):
a singer and she wanted up working at Mels Diner.
She wanted to be a singer and moved to Phoenix. Yeah,
it didn't work out well for her. I could see that.
And she had a good friend and her name was Flow,
and she would tell people to kiss her grits. Believe
that or not. I'm gonna believe it. You should believe it.
Seven one three, two, one two five, seven ninety The
best moment and the worst moment of Houston sports.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
We'll discuss that all throughout the day.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Today.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
It is the Matt Thomas Old Ross. This is Sports
Talk seven.

Speaker 7 (12:31):
Ninety more Matt Thomas Show with Ross Now on Sports
Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
All right, we mentioned rockets. I want to get a
little baseball chatter going today. Jeff Passing just continues to
be a Hall of Fame d of the Year year
in and year out. He's not gonna win it tomorrow, but
his little what do you call it when you're just patronizing?

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Is that what it is? To the to the Dodgers,
and how much you just love it on?

Speaker 7 (13:00):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Oh, it's just a pathetic.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
I just don't like him.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
How towing?

Speaker 2 (13:09):
How towing? How do you uh gargling? You know, yeah,
you know for being blunt.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
H Okay, we'll get to that.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
I'm going to the to the synonyms here, servile big word.
All right. So the Texans, last time we checked, got
destroyed by the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
Subservient, let's use that whatever.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Uh. And then there are people like you can't play CJ.
You can't play Joe Mixon, TI Larmy Tunsel. Why would
you want those guys to have the last taste in
their mouth of a complete beat down thirty one to two.
Forget about the fact even if they had won the game.
I think you play it again. I'm not gonna ever

(13:53):
think that the Texans should put these guys four quarters.
But that's an awfully long layoff. Like I think the
Chiefs are going in a little of dangerous territory. It'll
be twenty five days in between their games because they're
gonna rest their starters already, they're already off for they
get to buy because there's really a real, a true buy.

(14:15):
And I know this practice, but that seems to me
a long period of time. I just think the long
period of time is one factor. And number two ross
you had just such a poor outing. I think you
have to kind of work through some of the kinks.
You have to kind of go through a few plays
see what it's like. Because the last taste of Houston

(14:36):
Texans offense could not score. And that's why I think
you do play the starters probably at least I would
say at minimum quarter, maybe the most a half, But
I think you do play them. I will first say
that I agree with you. Okay, if I were, if
you and I were co head coach of the Texans,
starters would be out there probably at least two drives,

(14:57):
depending on how those go. If they're dis we would
play a little bit more. If they get you know,
a field goal and a touchdown, maybe it's time to
shut it down. I don't necessarily think it's a question
of how many points you score.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
It's just how you look down the field. I would
like to maybe two drives.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
If it's two three and outs and they're committing penalties
and losing yards, then yeah, I would send them out
more if it's that bad. Yeah, what I'm saying, there's
a couple of sustained drives. You're getting some you know,
if somebody's moving and stuff like that, then then maybe
it's time to shut it down. But I guess if
if Demko, Ryans and the Texans are going to be

(15:33):
sitting there starters this much, I mean maybe they're in
their mind it's you know, the Ravens game happened, but
they've moved on to where they've been having practices, they've
been having meetings, they're talking about the Titans, they're gonna
be talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers or god forbid, the
Ravens again. So you know, maybe it sticks more in
our minds that that is their last game than then

(15:54):
for them, it's the only thing I can think of
is a reason why they they are in there they
know their team better than we do, and that's okay.
I would hope so. But I I am of the
belief that you can as much as you want to
try to simulate real game atmosphere, you cannot do it

(16:14):
in a practice session. I would say, get him out there,
get him out there for a little bit. And I
believe some I can't remember who told me this or
I was listening on the radio, so I don't know
who it was, and whoever it is, if I should
give you credit for it.

Speaker 3 (16:26):
But I didn't hear it.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Is that the Texans approach, and it's like most other
teams is don't play your starters during the preseason, and
sometimes I get you off the sluggish starts. Kansas City
plays their starters during the preseason, thus they get off
to faster starts, and I think that's not It's not

(16:48):
Apple's apples on this, but I don't want the Texans
to get off to a slow start in the playoff game.
And if they're looking at two and a half weeks
in between games, I can't imagine they're gonna jump on
the field a week from Saturday, presuming they're playing Saturday
at four thirty or what a three thirty whatever and
be all guns of blazing. I don't think practice gives
you that feel. I think just going against somebody else's defense.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
Forgive me about the hits.

Speaker 2 (17:11):
You know, obviously don't you want to get no one hurt,
But just going against somebody that doesn't know what you're
going to do is a challenge.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
Yeah, a couple things.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Well, it's to me. It's also a discussion of c
J Stroud and then everyone else in c J Stroud
you were I don't know if we played it when
you were here, Matt, but he mentioned being banged up,
and one.

Speaker 3 (17:30):
Of the one of the maybe that's a fact.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
There was a question posed to him about what's different
from this year in last year, and he talked about
being banged up, and then he immediately tried to correct
himself and say, yeah, but that's not an excuse if I'm.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
Out there blah blah. Right, So, if it's c J.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Stroud and we don't know how hard, we don't know
how close to one hundred percent is he like fifty percent,
eighty five percent, is he ninety nine percent?

Speaker 3 (17:48):
We don't know. So if it is with in the
case of c J. Stroud.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
If he's more banged up than we has been let on,
then I'm really okay with him not being Maybe and
maybe he does, and we know this well, and we're
gonna we're gonna have c J and we're gonna have
a Demiico speak at twelve fifteen. Maybe he'll give us
a further answer, but maybe two and a half weeks
off might help. The question will be post and so
we'll it'll be interesting. And Dimiko knows this, the media

(18:12):
knows this. The question is gonna be one of the
first couple of questions out of the gate, so so
we we should get an answer. Let's guess, do you
think he'll be forthcoming or do you think he'll be
like you know, we're gonna see how the week goes along,
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Because because Dimiko
gets an A plus AND's coach speak, that's true, I'm
gonna guess, Okay, gut feeling A, he's going to answer

(18:33):
the question directly or fairly directly gut feeling B.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
I don't know exactly what his answer is gonna be.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
If I was a bet, if there was a betting line,
for this Yes, And we were at the window and
it said either you take him being forthcoming or speak
what would be not would trite be the term I
want to coach Triit means more like clib would be
more forthcoming. So whatever whatever's anti glib, surreptitious. Sorry, if

(19:02):
there's a word surreptitious, is that the pay window?

Speaker 3 (19:05):
I'm going with that.

Speaker 2 (19:05):
I think he's going to go, We're gonna see how
the week Pope moves along. I think we're gonna get
no firm clarity on the situation. Let's just go secretive. Yeah,
and in all cases, in this particular week, you don't
have to be secretive.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
It's the Tennessee Titans.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
They have literally nothing to play for, in fact, it
being their best interest to lose.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Yeah, I could see it going any number of ways.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
I could see him being like, Yeah, we want to
play our guys, we want to stay in rhythm, you know,
we want to keep things going, build momentum into the playoffs,
something like that. What was the tech What was the
Texans win total on the Vegas line this year before
the suit was at nine and a half. It was
nine and a half. And don't act like you don't know. Well,
you know what, Yeah, you're gonna win your bet because

(19:50):
the division is so bad. It was supposed to be
you lose because of the division is so bad, but
you're actually gonna win because the.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
Division is so bad.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Let's talk any Mills and the Boys could still be
at the Titans though, Sandy on side out of the
woods yet, Hi, Sandy, good morning.

Speaker 8 (20:05):
Good morning. So I'm going with a very female feel
good answer on the best moment.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
All right, hold on, hold on? You went female feel
good moment? Hmm, yeah, all right. Now let me ask
you this before you tell us what it is. Why
would you drop the female?

Speaker 9 (20:24):
Is there?

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Is there? Is there like a Is there like an
asterisk to whatever you're about to say or what?

Speaker 9 (20:29):
No, there's not.

Speaker 8 (20:30):
It's not an asterisks just for those heartwarming moments for me,
maybe more so than anything on the field.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
All right, ladies and gentlemen, the female perspective of the
Houston sports moment of twenty twenty four would be what.

Speaker 8 (20:45):
A signing in February to get an astro for life?

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Say that?

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Or time Great Movement moment ALTOV signing to be an Okay, okay,
that sounds good. Sandy, thank you very much of a
great week and we appreciate you listening. Astro for life
is that I'm gonna write that down. I gotta i
gotta go get some paper. Well, i'd like him to
play better in the field than he wasn't terrible, I
mean there was a slight regression.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
It is what it is.

Speaker 2 (21:10):
Okay, you're you're being dismissive. No, I mean, look, if
you look at certain websites like Fielding Bible, he's okay. Timeout, Yeah,
the average persons that looking don't care. Now you're above average,
and I'm talking about what the average person is doing.
These are the facts of the facts of the facts.
If you want to bury your hand, you want to
bury your head in the sand Fielding Bible and ignore

(21:33):
what's out there and pretend it doesn't exist, that's fine.
But the fact of the matter is he's been the
buy those metrics. He's been the worst second basement in
baseball the last two years, according to Fielding Bible. Yes, okay, Now,
my guess is, in all honesty, Fielding Bible is using
a lot of the same metrics.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
He should be the best.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Then I'm sorry, you know, no, no, no to base
number one. He's the best of all time.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
Oh no, no, no, no, no.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
Sugarcoat, no no, no, no, I don't know no no.
But as when somebody want said, A wise man once said,
we deal in realities on the show, we deal in
Fielding Bible. Sir, you look at the biggest dorkiest websites,
and I gave you credit. Referred me to that site.
I'd never heard of it. Chandler Man their mom. He's
a part of the family Fielding Bible, all right. Well,

(22:25):
if they have him as the worst, it's not like
they got it so wrong. He's the best. Well no,
I wasn't saying that, but I'm just saying when I
when I watch him play, hmm, I don't go.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
This is an isore.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
Like I'll give you a you're ready for today's analogy
of the day. Are you sure you haven't seen some
of his misthrows? Stop it? Saturday Night Live was on
O was Saturday. It was a repeat, okay, and Stevie
Nicks was was the singer. Was the guest singer. Okay.
I'm a huge Stevie Nicks fan. Fleetwood Mac say, I'm
staying with you. She's lost her fastballs. Where you're going.

(22:58):
I can't believe how bad the fact ball this. It's
like an ephis pitch she now greanted. She's seventy six
years old. Yeah, give her a break man. She sang
two songs. One I didn't know his new one was
one was one of all time classics. And she was
like barking into the microphone. Matter of fact, she was
doing roal uh Connor. I don't know if you can

(23:19):
look it up on YouTube. See if you can get
Stevie Nicks singing Saturday Night.

Speaker 3 (23:25):
You want to embarrass the young lady.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
Young lady, she's seventy six years worth, probably about a
billion dollars.

Speaker 3 (23:30):
She's doing just fine.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
But I was such a big Stevie Nicks fan that
I was like, my god, this is the first time
I've heard her bark, and it was terrible. She was barking, okay,
I mean it was like a seal, like a guy
a Clyde Dreuxer seal, just a regular set.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
Okay, Okay, back to my portmher. I have screwed up here.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
I just Jose's dropped off. But I wasn't embarrassed to
see him playing second base. And maybe I'm not watching
every single ground ball his way or every single throw
he's I think he's just average. It's also about range,
which there are balls that he used to get to
that he corrects. So if he dies for a ball
and misses it, if you're just sitting there in the
stands watching, you're like, dang, yeah, great playoffs almost got

(24:14):
it right. If if every other or not every other,
but if twenty five out of thirty second baseman would
have gotten and our friend at Fielding Bible probably figured
that out, correct, that's fine, all right? Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. All right, that is
the that we have one vote in for the Houston
sports moment of the year. Is Altuve signing a lifetime contract?
You have one seven one three two one two five

(24:36):
seven eighty And what's the worst moment of the year
in Houston sports? Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. I want to tell you right now about

Speaker 7 (25:57):
Listen to the home of the Rockets on yours smart speaker, Ask.

Speaker 10 (26:01):
Hey, Google play Sports Talk seven ninety on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 11 (26:15):
Song Eedge of seventeen eight Great Stevie Nick song.

Speaker 3 (26:28):
She's like she was like yelling the microphone.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
I'm like, Stevie, this is not a good looks seventy six, Matt,
give her a break.

Speaker 3 (26:38):
I love her. I've seen her. I sound like angry karaoke.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
That's exactly That's exactly what it was.

Speaker 3 (26:48):
It was anger karaoke. Now she's got a.

Speaker 2 (26:51):
Deep, graspy esque. I would say gravelly, gravelly, gritty, gritty
is a better term. I love her for that, and
I bet in nineteen seventy six she was I mean,
I know from her voice perspective she was amazing. But
there are other things that probably she did in nineteen
seventy six are amazing as well, Like what entertain America?

Speaker 3 (27:14):
What is wrong with you?

Speaker 2 (27:18):
That's not that far off.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
This is the recording.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
Yeah, oh this is such a jam.

Speaker 3 (27:28):
Maybe it's a little bit, it's a little bit. It's
a lot better.

Speaker 2 (27:33):
So but I give her credit. She's barking this out
a little No, she's not a barker. I'm trying to
help she don't even help.

Speaker 7 (27:48):
You know.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
She resides in Sedona, Arizona, which I hear is just magnificent.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
Maybe it's the desert air has gotten to her. She
dried her out.

Speaker 2 (27:55):
But she was in New York singing and Satay Night
Live or whatever it was. Yeah, it was made the
climate change to New York. Can't she got the dry
nasal pass. The best part of that SNL that night
was it was hosted by Ariana Grande and when she
impersonates to other people, it's fantastic. What is it?

Speaker 3 (28:09):
I'll take your word for it. Didn't catch it. She's
very sure.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
It's wonderful.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
All right, Uh, where we're going? One don't know. You
wanted to talk wicked? No, I didn't see it. You
saw it. I heard it was really long.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
I don't remember. It was like two and a half
or so. That's long for a movie. Well, it's a
part one that's really long. They didn't put part one
on the thing, but they they'd really only do act
one of the play and they're gonna do another one,
which is smart by them, like a billion dollars to
go with your your nieces and nephews. You one as
an adult. Yeah, good, free you. I went with a
young lady who really wanted to go. Okay, did you

(28:46):
sing along with that? I don't have a problem with musicals.
I don't like music. I don't have a problem with
them either. Okay, but did did you sing? Were the
people in the in the movies they have sing along
ones and that was sing along?

Speaker 3 (28:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (28:56):
Yeah, apparently they they are very much do not sing
during I ain't going to the single long one. I
wanted to go to Imax, and the CGI look cool
on Imax. Yeah, okay seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven nine zero.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
So we wrap up the how much the starters should play?
I mean, again, anywhere between a quarter and a half.
But I think again, presuming that people are healthy, you
need to be out there to get some mojo back.
I would agree, Okay, I tend to agree. We'll see
if they agree. Now you mentioned the the starting not

(29:32):
playing at all in the in the preseason thing. The
Texans won their first two games. Yeah, again, that was
somebody that I didn't come up with that. With that thought,
I'm just saying that in like teams, teams typically will
get off to slow starts because the starters don't go.
Would you want to have that kind of rev up
for obviously a much more important time of the year
when they play the playoffs. By the way, it's either

(29:54):
going to be Pittsburgh, the LA Chargers, or Baltimore. If
you look to me, the Pittsburgh Steelers are coming here.
I'm okay with that more than Baltimore. Stay away, Baltimore.
You are on the leader of the Russell Wilson is
the god category for look at you. When did I
say Russell Wilson is a god? I think I checked
the tape. I think he went on the show and said,

(30:15):
I demand that Russell Wilson take over for Justin Fields
in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
I said that they've regressed, though have they not recently?

Speaker 2 (30:22):
Yes, when when the first change was first made, they
were very terrible against Canada Grad And now they've lost
three in a row, and I mean by blowouts twenty
seven to thirteen to the Eagles, thirty four to seventeen
to the Ravens, and twenty nine to ten to the Chiefs.
All three playoff teams, that's correct, all three frankly high
ranked playoff teams.

Speaker 3 (30:42):
Are the Bengals playing for anything this weekend, they'd take.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
On the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Do the Bengals still have a chance.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
It's got to be because it's a it's I think no,
they put that on Saturday, never mind, Yeah, a Saturday game,
So yeah, there's something to play for. Yeah, so the
Bengals have something to play for. It's either gonna be
the Bengals. The Chargers have clinched. Only teams that have
not clenched, I believe would be the Broncos, the Broncos. Yeah,
Broncos and the Bengals. It looks like, oh, the Dolphins,

(31:09):
the Dolphins, tennant clefts, a little bit of chance.

Speaker 3 (31:12):
Colts. By the way, guy limited yesterday with their lost
the Giants.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
That's a shame.

Speaker 3 (31:17):
You know, Shane.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Steinkin was supposed to be this really awesome, great head coach.
People were like, you know, should the Texas gone for
Steyking over Tomiko Ryans and the bloom off that Rose
is done right?

Speaker 9 (31:29):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (31:29):
But uh, I mean it's been a tough situation there
in Uh. In Indianapolis, it's been Anthony Richardson and Joe
Flacco's what they've been rolling out. But by the way,
don't give up forty five points of the Giants who.

Speaker 3 (31:46):
Are screwing up the chance to be get number one overall.

Speaker 9 (31:48):
Pick.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
There's probably some idiot out there that picked up the
Colts defense in fantasy. Oh, by the way, are you
the champ? No, we'll see what happens. I think I'm
up thirty. But he has Juwan Jennings, Deebo Samuel and
Detroit defense. So I would say I'm a slight underdog
right now. Okay, how are we celebrating. I'm not celebrating.

(32:09):
I picked up the Colts defense. They got me minus four?
Oh you picked him up this week?

Speaker 3 (32:13):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (32:15):
And the Vikings defense against green Bay. I was like,
Vikings defense has been great, but against green Bay Colts
against the Drew Locke. We have a listener wis on Twitter. Okay,
it's like, please Matt help me. No, tell him to
send it to doctor Rhoade. Hold on, let me finish
the story, he said, Should I go with? Let me
see what he said? He said? Do I start Darnell

(32:35):
Mooney or Adam Feelen? Feeling had a huge game for Carolina.
How did Mooney do yesterday?

Speaker 6 (32:43):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (32:43):
I think Mooney was decent, but I don't think he
was as good as feeling.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
I have to go back in the look and so
he just can send me Matt, I said, I'm not
giving you the answer. Let I'll go text Rotor. And
I texted rot and rote game the right answer. Okay, good,
So but he did not?

Speaker 3 (32:57):
Did Roal help you out?

Speaker 2 (32:59):
Or? Matt? And he did? He did he offer you
the What does that have to do with I had?
Did he tell you to pick up the Colts defense?
I think he did suggest one of them? But I mean,
it's fine, that's not rodtr Rhter knows what he's doing.
It does Fantasy football is mostly luck. Yeah, not mostly,
but it's a lot of luck. And Okay, I'm getting
Darneld Mooney had two catches for thirty seven yards, so

(33:20):
Thilan had a much better day. Okay, I'm getting people
email me about Stevie Nicks's strange habits. All right, I'm
not going to read that one. Jay, Sorry, it's not
gonna happen. Jesus rip, Jimmy Carter, r P. Greg Gumble, Yes,
these things happened in threes, RP. Lind the Labin, Oh

(33:41):
my god, yeah, Jimmy Carter, Greg Gumble, and lived the labin.
They're all in the same field. It happens in threes.
They were all stars in the seventies. Okay, Greg Gumble
wasn't a star. This is a TV sportscaster in Chicago
in the seventies. It's not guess he was original ESPN guy?
Was he?

Speaker 3 (33:57):
When the first couple of years you leave it or not?
I thought you're doing Jimmy Carter?

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Oh yeah, what can we do it? Can we do
Greg Gumble tomorrow if nobody else dies? No, Tomorrow's the
best I believe it or not for the year in
dy of the year. So Greg Gumble just stays on ice. Huh,
well that's about it. Depends on what his family wants
to do. I set it up, thank you very much.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven

(34:22):
one three two one two five seven Anty. We're opening
up our phone lines all day today because we are
looking for the Houston sports moment of the year. And
if you don't want us, call us, which I don't
know why we're friendly people, give us the best moment
and the worst. Rossie, I'm gonna give you fifteen minutes
to declare yours. You've already put yours out there. Yeah,
I need to hear suggestions from people, though, so we
need suggestions. Seven one three two one two five Seveney

(34:44):
the best thing and the worst thing in sports in
Houston this year seven one three, two one two five
seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (34:50):
More Matt Thomas Show with Ross Now Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (35:02):
All right, ten fifty two? Uh are we adding?

Speaker 2 (35:06):
Did you add Beyonce singing at halftime? Is that really
the great? Is that the greatest sports moment of the year?
How about Renel Blanco's no hitters?

Speaker 12 (35:14):
That count?

Speaker 2 (35:15):
Renel Blanco's no hitter is gonna be at the ad
or near the top of my list. Okay, as of
right now, I'm not gonna put beyond It was nothing
sportsy about Beyonce. It was purely entertainment. What do you
mean rodeo is sports? She was in a cowboy outfit?
Cow girl outfit?

Speaker 3 (35:29):
I mean, did we all get athletic leanclined after that?

Speaker 9 (35:32):
Sure?

Speaker 3 (35:34):
You want to go work on our abs? Yes?

Speaker 2 (35:36):
Did you get the cardio? She was not part of
a sports moment. I'm sorry your heart was pumping. That's cardio, right,
A lot of things.

Speaker 3 (35:42):
That was pumping.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
Yeah, right, Jesus, you just cannot help yourself. Well, it's
been a while several hours seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven nine zero. Okay, So al two bays signing
Renel Blanco's No Hitter. I'm gonna put in there rockets.

(36:05):
Finally beating Golden State to go onto the semi finals
of the NBA Cup, and that got me to Las Vegas,
where they took really good care of us.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
How was your did you lose money though?

Speaker 2 (36:17):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (36:17):
I won a lot? Oh really?

Speaker 5 (36:18):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (36:19):
Okay good?

Speaker 3 (36:19):
And I saw the Eagles.

Speaker 2 (36:21):
At well what's left of the eagles stop, there's most
of them are so lot at the spear at this
sphere fear, I can't say it. Spear spear, this is
even greater in per se again, there's no v.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
I'm trying to put the fear spear.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
Say s with fear spear, put an s in front
of fear sphere sphere. That that's how you do it.
I'll high five of you on that spear. That's exactly spear. Yeah,
thank you that he that helps for you. I was
getting helping out my seven year old niece. No, but
I mean I had to worry about Nicole or Jovich

(37:01):
yesterday when we have Nicola Jokich. So yeah, I mean
it's Jovich, Yeah, Jovich Jokich. You know, we should put
you in an NBA spelling Bee one day. That'd be fun.
You'd probably do pretty I would actually do. Okay, I
think that's what I'm saying. You study every team. It's
better than the rap spelling Bee. That was tough. That
was not a fine moment of my career. Uh oh okay.

(37:25):
So those are the high water marks. Uh, low would be.
I don't put Baltimore beating the Texans in a divisional
round as a low water.

Speaker 3 (37:35):
Point, because again, I don't think anybody thought they were
going We mentioned that as well.

Speaker 2 (37:39):
Beating the Browns, Oh, Texans, the way the Browns came
here earlier in the year and beat them so badly,
the big bad Browns, and then they just boat raced.
That was the high water mark for the Texans this year. Gosh,
this team has arrived.

Speaker 9 (37:53):
C J.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
Stroud is here, We've got a franchise quarterback.

Speaker 3 (37:57):
This team can do anything. And then the rate this
game happened.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Okay, Um, would you say Texans beating the Bills would
be a high, would be a Houston sports moment of
the year.

Speaker 3 (38:10):
I say again, Texan's beating the Bills. What's one game?

Speaker 2 (38:13):
Okay, saying now the narrative after that game was Sean
McDermott blew the game you of.

Speaker 3 (38:18):
Age going undefeated at Fortita Center again last year. That's
not one moment. How they do in the tournament. They did, Fine,
that's good. Lead ad, it's great, right, sweet sixteen?

Speaker 2 (38:31):
There you go. Okay, that's still a good run. So
you can say Cougar sweet sixteen. By the way, the
pune Olcloma State tonight, okay in still Water? Wonderful? Is
Oklahoma State any good? I don't know me either, but
it's big twelve, baby, let's go. Oh how about the
Cougar's beating Utah and Kandas State and back to back weeks.
Although you taugh didn't make a bowl this year. Stop
trying to force in the Cougars. It's not working. Okay, Well, okay,

(38:55):
so I got four moments right here. Al two by
signing a lifetime deal, Renel Blanco's no hitter Rockets finally
beating Golden State, Texans beating the Browns, Am, I did
I miss the one that you were gonna go with?

Speaker 3 (39:10):
It was the Brendel Blanco. No, oh was it?

Speaker 2 (39:12):
Okay? Sorry about that? I mean, no hitters are special
and Blanco doing it at that point when and then
he went on to have that great season and we
weren't sure, you know how state he wasn't even supposed
to start at the beginning of the season. How about
the injury? How about this one that's not necessarily something
that would be considered horrible, but the worst, maybe worst
moment of the year for the Astros would be maybe
Kyle Tucker being gone for three months, him getting a

(39:35):
shin bruise, the worst shin bruise in history. Oh, how
about this Kyle Tucker being traded? Would that be a lot?
Would that be a bad moment?

Speaker 3 (39:42):
Well, let's see, we got one more day for Bregmant
to get signed away.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
That'd be That'd be a bad moment. By the way,
I think I'm tasting my lunch already. There's no way
it's gonna be five or under. No way, Okay, that's
fine if you I mean, are we up in the bet?

Speaker 4 (39:57):
No?

Speaker 3 (39:57):
No, no, no, no, no, no, the bet The bet is
perfect where it is?

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Okay? Six years six years as Dutch? Yes, five or less?
Is me seven or more as you winning?

Speaker 3 (40:07):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (40:07):
Yeah, we're gonna be going and going to a two
o'clock like you're not gonna go to b C's riza
and just getting up a fan.

Speaker 3 (40:12):
I stillw you Korean barbecue.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
I know I'm ready to.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
By the way, you were in South Korea? Right, Yes?
Did you hear that airline?

Speaker 9 (40:20):
That?

Speaker 2 (40:21):
Yes? Did you fly to that air now? I? Well no, no, no,
that wasn't The main airport is incheone and the airport okay,
all right, I don't remember what airport that was over there,
but yeah, that's a scary and horrible situation, unbelievably sad.
Because here's the thing, and I don't mean to get
all aeronautical on you here, but the plane landed. It
was when they ran, when the plane ran into the

(40:41):
walls where the explosion took place, gosh, one hundred and
seventy nine dead up till two people survived. Just just awful,
just awful. All right, let's get to a little more
positive stuff. Uh, second hour of the show, by way,
we're gonna do the news at noon today and then
we're gonna run. We're gonna go here with Demiko out
to say a twelve fifteen, So we got that coming up.
We're looking for the best moment of the year in

(41:01):
sports in the worst Houston This is just Houston stuff.
It's got related to Houston. Could it be the Astros
falling two straight at the Tigers in a wild card round?

Speaker 3 (41:09):
That certainly can't be a bright moment.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety What was
your Houston best moment of the year in sports and
your worst Houston sports moments? Seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero. Right now, I want to

Show with ross seven to one three two one two
five seven ninety seven to one three two one two
five seven hoey rockets lost last night. Let's Connor here?
Excuse me?

Speaker 1 (42:58):
Connor?

Speaker 3 (42:59):
Uh uh?

Speaker 2 (43:00):
Why don't you play the audio of me and Adam
Clinton seeing what we saw?

Speaker 3 (43:05):
That we can see what we saw, right?

Speaker 4 (43:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (43:08):
You saw what you saw?

Speaker 9 (43:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (43:09):
Didn't you see what you saw?

Speaker 3 (43:10):
I here's what I saw.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
And now we got a Mantell.

Speaker 13 (43:18):
And Tyler Grad and a bunch of players on both sides.
I caught it late, but man Thompson got thrown down,
Tyler Hero is being restrained, Thompson on the Rocket side,
Rosier getting involved, Shan Gun getting involved.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
A mean Thompson tossed Tyler Hero down.

Speaker 12 (43:40):
Like a rag doll.

Speaker 3 (43:42):
Couldn't have said it better, Adam.

Speaker 2 (43:44):
It is a very accurate description from one Adam Clinton,
because I was you know, when you're trying to call everything,
you're trying to see everything, like Adoka is getting super
pissed at mid court, Ben Sullivan's top assistant. It's like,
why did you throw me out?

Speaker 14 (44:00):
Then?

Speaker 2 (44:00):
Yet before that you had Van Vliet bumping Mark Davison.

Speaker 3 (44:03):
He got tossed. Those rockets are a scrappy bunch.

Speaker 14 (44:10):
You know.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
Uh, they I don't know if they're the bad boys,
but there they don't f with me.

Speaker 3 (44:15):
Boys.

Speaker 2 (44:16):
Yeah, are we gonna come up with a nickname for him?
Bad boys? What you gonna do when they come for you?
The h Town brawlers?

Speaker 3 (44:25):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (44:25):
I don't know. I just made that up. But it
was funny because Tilton Brooks wasn't involved any of that.

Speaker 4 (44:30):
No.

Speaker 2 (44:31):
I mean, if you were to pick a fight with
a member of the Miami he Taler Hero is probably
on top of the board.

Speaker 3 (44:36):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (44:37):
By the way, can we let me know, Connor, when
you have the Titler Hero sound, there is one sound
by making its waves around the world. Okay, And so
we'll let you hear what Tyler Hero had to say
about see talking all tough.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
I saw one uh shmandam Schmant and tweeting about it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
Yeah, shockingly, Adam Clinton was talking about somebody on Twitter
starting Twitter fight shmana Shmant. And then I watched Tyler
Hero jack up a bunch of shots like he's done
over the rockets the last three or four years. He
did quite well. But yeah, Dylan was not involved in that.
We did see Terry Rogier get involved. We saw Jalen

(45:14):
Green get tossed. Freddy got knocked for the five second call,
and as I brought up on the broadcast, I don't
know if it was a five cent counter not. I'm
not the one going one thousand and one, one thousand
and two, one thousand and three. Did you see the
bump that Van believe did the Mark Davis? I did not.
It didn't. Again, the rule is, whether it's intentional or not,
you can't touch an official, So kind of by default,

(45:38):
I think fred Hedda get.

Speaker 3 (45:39):
Tossed, all right, just by the by the letter of
the letter, letter of the law.

Speaker 9 (45:43):
All right.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Here is Tyler Hero discussing his confrontation in the throw down,
and he's received from one of men, Thompson.

Speaker 15 (45:49):
You and Thompson exchanging bards. I did it all really
kind of spark off?

Speaker 14 (45:54):
There just come some two competitors going at it, playing basketball,
and then it got a little out of here.

Speaker 15 (46:01):
And it's not every single night that you have all
those texts and all of those injections. Was it building
to that or was it just a standard physical game
that just had one of those igniting moments?

Speaker 2 (46:10):
Just a physical game.

Speaker 14 (46:12):
I guess that's what happens when someone's scoring, throwing dimes,
doing the whole thing.

Speaker 2 (46:20):
So I get mad too. Good By the way, this
Fred van Vliet bump is intentional in my opinion, Okay,
I just saw it a little bit like go before
the show started. He didn't have to walk towards him
like that. He was like an accidental, intentionally accidental bump.

Speaker 3 (46:41):
Now let me ask you this.

Speaker 2 (46:42):
Now, okay, let's say, look here, Fred, Okay, drop the basketball.
Then he goes back to him.

Speaker 3 (46:49):
I'm watching for the left arm. Yeah, oh yeah, he's a.

Speaker 2 (46:54):
Little accidental purpose on purpose. It was unintentional, intentional what
you want to I think? So, now do you get
suspended for that too? Can you get can you get enough?
Yeah to me that Yeah, but I think i'm and
Thompson may not be playing against Dallas, would be my
get on that, unless unless it take a couple of
days to figure it out. Maybe maybe the NBA U

(47:14):
League penalties are uh they are they're taking a vacation.
Speaking of penalties, So Anthony Edwards makes a three point
shot on Friday to beat the Wolves of the Rockets Rockets.

Speaker 3 (47:27):
To beat the Rockets, He's with the Wolves.

Speaker 2 (47:29):
He gets on their live broadcast and he drops two
S bombs and an F bomb.

Speaker 3 (47:36):
Okay, did you see he got fined yesterday?

Speaker 2 (47:40):
Did you see?

Speaker 12 (47:40):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (47:40):
I didn't see. You want to play guests?

Speaker 2 (47:41):
The fine.

Speaker 3 (47:44):
One hundred thousand dollars?

Speaker 2 (47:46):
What was he repeat? Offender? Well, here's the thing. It
is becoming more prevalent in the NBA for these players
to be swearing on live television. Okay, now they're on cable,
so there's a little bit of leeway. It's not like
they scrypted a series and said, hey, let's put these
people on to have them screaming, yell and swear. If
Eric Cartman can curse, why can't why can't Aunt Edwards?

(48:08):
So let me tell you about Ann Edwards. And Edwards
berated two of the three officials in a game about
two weeks ago, said I hate the two guys. The
girl was fine, but the two dudes were bad. Yeah,
he got fined seventy five thousand dollars for that. He
gets fined one hundred thousand. Could you imagine in your life?

Speaker 4 (48:25):
Now?

Speaker 2 (48:25):
Granted, Anthony Edwards said, if you want to look up
what his salary is, I'm sure it's multi multimillions of dollars.

Speaker 3 (48:31):
He's making about fitty a year.

Speaker 2 (48:32):
But could you imagine being fined one hundred and seventy
five thousand dollars in less than ten days. M that's
about a lambo, Matt. That's I mean, that's that. I
don't say it stings, but it's a pinch, right, one

(48:53):
hundred and seventy fivete Yeah, this year, he's making forty
two million. By the end of his contract is fifty five.
And look, all of us, I shouldn't say all of us,
but all of us, most of us swear yeah nine
and I have been fortunate enough to be doing this
job for this will be thirty four years coming up. Okay,

(49:15):
I think I've sworn on the air intentionally zero times,
accidentally two or three times, so my ratio is very small.

Speaker 3 (49:24):
Twice.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
I think I've sworn on air, but not intentionally, No,
not intentionally. Anthony Edwards does these interviews all the time.
He has to know you cannot be dropping s and
F bombs on a live television procra. You've had some
semblance of media training or I about repetition reps.

Speaker 3 (49:45):
Yes, you just.

Speaker 2 (49:48):
When you have a microphone in your hand or a
headset on for a two minute brief interview. You can
swear all you want to with all your buddies after
the game.

Speaker 3 (49:57):
Just keep it.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
But unless he's done this several times, hundred g seems
a little agree One hundred thousand dollars. That's a lot
of money. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Clay is in Hockley, Miss Green's networking here. Let's give
me a second. You want to try it, all right,
let's try Clay now, go ahead, Clay on seven ninety.

(50:19):
You've got our best and worst Houston sports moments of
the year.

Speaker 3 (50:22):
Clay, good morning, Thanks for holding play.

Speaker 5 (50:25):
I'm doing today. Yeah, I think the best moment of
the year. I'm not a big Texas fan, but when
the Saxons dominated the Bills and I'm thinking I was
impressed something. And these guys, you know, are talented team.
They've got a real shot to make a deep playoffs
for it.

Speaker 2 (50:40):
And wait, wait minute, you said they you do believe
they have a deep playoff running them?

Speaker 3 (50:46):
He was saying, that's what I was thinking that Yeah, yeah, yeah,
that makes a live mins.

Speaker 5 (50:49):
Okay, I definitely beat the Bills because the Bills are.

Speaker 2 (50:53):
All right then, I'm gonna put the Texans beating the
Bills on the best of moments. I can go with
that beating Bills, all right, So what is your worst moment?

Speaker 5 (51:00):
Then, by far, whenever the Astros released Kyle Tucker, and
it to me, it just me it signifies the uncertainty
after seven, you know, years of the best baseball you
could ask for for a city. It kind of, you know,
it lends to the uncertainty of what's going to happen
from here. I mean that you know, has some aging players.

(51:22):
They're losing Breglan, they're losing.

Speaker 9 (51:24):
Their lost Tucker.

Speaker 5 (51:26):
And to me, I don't know, you know, whether to
be excited about what's going to happen or just be
apprehensive about the hole they still have to fill. What's
going to happen from here?

Speaker 12 (51:35):
And he does have a happy New Year.

Speaker 2 (51:36):
Same to you, Clay. Thanks for a phone call. Do
you think I mean you and I never talked about this.
This will be an organic conversation, organic conversation. Do you
think there was.

Speaker 3 (51:45):
Any amount of money.

Speaker 2 (51:48):
Reasonably like you if you offered him seven hundre million
dollars you of course, Kyle Tucker's gonna say yes, but
right if you would have offered him fair market value,
does he stay here?

Speaker 3 (52:02):
I think.

Speaker 2 (52:04):
He was going to hit the market no matter what,
because we don't know what fair market value is. You
don't know what it is until you hit it. Like
every estimate of one Soto's contract was around six hundred
maximum seven hundred million dollars, and he got He got
well over seven hundred million dollars. He almost got eight hundred.
I mean, well you got seven seven to fifty two
whatever it was, right, right, sixty two. So I think

(52:26):
with that line of thinking, you don't know what the
market of for Kyle Tucker truly is until he hits
that market. And in the ASTROS it's in a way,
as long as Kyle Tucker stays healthy and it's productive,
he can't lose because the Astros would have the same
opportunity to sign Kyle Tucker as anybody else, that's right,

(52:46):
So if they're willing to pay market value, he might
as well hit the market. Market value would have been
to me, eight years, thirty five million per.

Speaker 3 (52:57):
I think one Soto is the I think ten.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
Year contracts and I will follow my sword on this,
and you know I can disagree with this, I think
the ten year contract we're getting in one a year
or sometimes less than one a year. But they're the outlier,
the realleast. What about the fifteen year contract. That's just foolish.
But I think today, if you're a if you're a
five tool, mega all star, superstar type player, I think

(53:21):
eight years is a good long number that doesn't necessarily
cripple a franchise. And that's what I would say Kyle
Tucker is because here's the thing. As good as Juan
Soto is ROSSI he's a defensive liability.

Speaker 3 (53:36):
Yes he is. So he was.

Speaker 2 (53:39):
I mean, honestly, Soto is much better hitter, more power,
I mean, one of the great what draw on base percentage,
on bass slugging, I mean, my god, he does it.
But Kyle possesses a lot of things that Juan Soda
does not possess. Yes, arm range, So I think that.

(54:05):
I think at the end of the day, the Yankees
will regret that offer. Excuse me, the Dodgers will regret
they offer.

Speaker 3 (54:10):
No Mets.

Speaker 2 (54:11):
I want to make some things up here. The Mets
will regret that offer. But the Mets want to do
it because they've got envy of the Yanks. I think
eight years, would's say times thirty five, that's uh eighty
to eighty to eighty. Good job by you. That's fair
market value. Would Kyle Tucker have accepted? And we the
only person that we know this is Kyle Tucker. What

(54:32):
have you accepted eight years, two hundred and forty million dollars? No? No,
I think because he's still saying I want to go
above and beyond what I think fair market value is.
Or he could have said, you took my ass to
arbitration a couple of years back, and it got certainly.

Speaker 3 (54:49):
Because that's what arbitration hearings.

Speaker 2 (54:50):
Do, correct, And I want to go play somewhere else
because I have a I don't forget these types of things.

Speaker 3 (54:58):
I think that's part of it.

Speaker 2 (54:59):
But I also think this smart move for Kyle Tucker objectively,
with or without arbitration, is to hit the market and
see what the market is the way the teams have
been spending money lately. But also you have to wonder
at what point a lot of these teams that are
setting the market, the Mats, Yankees and Dodgers, at what
point do they become tapped out because they're they're the
projected payrolls for those teams in the next few years
is still gonna be like close to three hundred million dollars.

(55:20):
So if those teams are already tapped out, then where
does it go for Kyle Tucker? Is the question? Yeah?

Speaker 12 (55:26):
All right?

Speaker 2 (55:27):
Seven one three two one two five SEVENINTI Low Mormons.

Speaker 7 (57:13):
Matt Thomas Show with Ross Now Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (57:24):
I brought up what eight years for two eighty for Braggs,
not for Breggs for a Kyle hunker. Okay, some may say,
friend of the show secret that maybe he wants the
forty million dollar club. He might the old aa V world. Hmmm,
I believe my av is forty million dollars a year.

(57:45):
I'm not gonna I'm not being compensated that. Well, we'll see.
What did you buy the wa When did you have
Bregman signing his deal? Did you say after Christmas?

Speaker 3 (57:53):
Or did you say.

Speaker 2 (57:53):
Before when you're coming back your Soto as in like, well,
I thought he would have been true. Yeah, that's true,
but I thought he would have been signed by now.
I don't know if what my gut feeling was for
the day, but which By the way, we do also
have a Kyle Tucker bet we do seven and a half.
I had the over and you had the under all
on the contract. Yes, I'll letting you forget. I had

(58:14):
forgotten that one. I will say that I actually feel
significantly more confident my Bregman hit than I would be
on my Kyle Tom feel a little shaky. I think
we're I think we're Dutch and we might be dutching.
The Dutch on six is good. By the way, do
you ever notice on Twitter that there are posters that
are put up, like images that say Alex Bregman and

(58:36):
the Tigers are interested in each other, but the Tigers
won't go to two hundred million.

Speaker 3 (58:39):
With him, And I didn't see that. Yeah, it's been
running around a little bit here. Again.

Speaker 2 (58:44):
I don't know who to believe him, not to believe
even I used to always believe the check mark people,
and then I don't even have to believe the check
Now you have check mark people, check Mark sham Sharania
breaking the trade to the Rockets. It's not real. He
has a check market. And I totally got goofed.

Speaker 3 (58:59):
I was gonna out you on that, but you know you.

Speaker 2 (59:01):
Should because in fairness, I saw that Sunday morning, eight
o'clock when I woke up. Yeah, and it has a
check mark and Elon Musk ruined the check mark system.

Speaker 3 (59:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (59:13):
Yeah, So it's not your fault for getting dupe man,
but I should I should have known better.

Speaker 3 (59:21):
By the way, that's thought.

Speaker 2 (59:23):
We ever talked Kings basketball on this show, but man
getting rid of Mike Brown. Other coaches around the league
are not lating the Kings, and so are King fans.
Michael Malone's comments were none too. I guess he was
none too pleased. Well, he's also been fired by the Chams.
You talk about a franchise that just can't ever assist

(59:44):
have the same success, it would be them, mm hmm.
They like the lamp or a fuse or whatever the
hell you do there in Sacramento.

Speaker 3 (59:51):
Yeah, that's I think that's cool. Yeah, they don't live
very off in these days. Not a lot. It's for wins.

Speaker 2 (59:56):
Yeah, that's right. Leave it against the rockets up. That's
another hero to talk about. That's fine, all right.

Speaker 3 (01:00:03):
So everything so far negatively is involving.

Speaker 2 (01:00:06):
The Houston Astros. Oh, I got known for you. It's
a it's a bad sports moment. Astros had to release
Jose Bray.

Speaker 4 (01:00:13):
You.

Speaker 3 (01:00:14):
Yeah, that's a bad moment.

Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
You could somebody could say, you can flip and say
it was a good moment. I mean, your production at
first Base went up from them, but it didn't go
up significantly. I was sending him to the four. You
know what, I actually have this in our file when
Dana Brown, Dana Brown is saying the Jose A Brao
move will be very good for him. I'll go and
put that in the wrong pile. Well, it was one

(01:00:38):
of those things that was like, you know, he'll go
down there and get his bat speed fixed, and it
just never turned out. Ever, the optimist one at Dana Brown,
does jose Brew you ever swing? And I'm majoring get
bat ever again, I'm gonna say no. I mean he
could go. I mean, you know Guriel went to reinvent himself.

(01:01:00):
He did, But yeah, I don't think so he was
good with what the Royals down the stretch a little bit. Yeah,
matter of fact against the Astros ironically enough, So I
don't know. We'll see seven one three two, one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven nine zero. Let's see if Ross is serious about Beyonce,

(01:01:23):
he needs to be fired.

Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
Lol.

Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
What did I say best moment? No was somebody else
said best moment. It was a good moment. I mean
I wasn't displeased. This was in a sport moment.

Speaker 3 (01:01:33):
It was.

Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
It was. It was really good until Kllan Hannah being
on the field, which, by the way, I read that
they shortened their appearance on all on the Netflix respect
that recut. Ain't that a blimp the recut? They they
shortened the airtime. Hannah one Hannah Ani must have a
national TV contact. Well, I don't know what they did
or how they worked it, but good for them.

Speaker 3 (01:01:54):
Yeah it was. It was naked about the mcnairs. That's
what they did. I can also playoff game. No other
way to spin that.

Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
I mean, no, he did not have to be on
there unless they probably requested, if not insistent. Do you
think you can put it this way? Do you think
Pionce is like, Man, I'm getting paid all this money.
Uh huh, I'm gonna be in my hometown. You know
what would really make this special? Having Callahana and a
car behind me? No clue who they are? None on ye, none,
one are still doesn't No, who are those people? Who's

(01:02:23):
that man with that funny mustache? It was on during
my set. Guys, Yeah, why is he trailing me? Throwing
his ahes up? That's funny?

Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Seven one three two one two five seven?

Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
Uh oh, here we go. Do bonds catch against the wall?
Earlier this year? A high watermarks a good one? Why
not Jake Myers is catches against the wall? How about
Gold Glove finalists? How about Jake Myers May Yeah, highlight.

Speaker 3 (01:02:50):
Of the year.

Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
That was the highlight of the years. We know what
the fan club has is that I'm going through September
not so much Kakuchi being acquired high high watermark. So
you would like to vote for Kakuchi, you're picking Kakuchi.
I would always pick Akuchi. I'm not doing it good.

(01:03:14):
You shouldn't not. I'm not gonna not gonna fall into
these traps.

Speaker 3 (01:03:18):
You shouldn't seven one three two one two five seven Honti.

Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
No, everybody was upset about the Kouchie trade until it
worked out correct. You know we ought to do we
we ought to I don't know how we would do
this because the Afternoon Boys do a best of X
sex segments. I don't want a bit steel for them
because they've been bit stealing off of us for years.

Speaker 3 (01:03:41):
We used to do a Twitter rail bag.

Speaker 2 (01:03:42):
But wouldn't it be fun to start saving some tweets
about how bad something is or this is going to
ruin everything, and then come back and play and reread
them later on. I like that. We could just call
it the Receipts X Receipts on the Matt Thommas Show
with Everybody, Keep the receipts on the Matt Thomasine, Keep

(01:04:03):
Ross with Ross.

Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
Yeah, don't forget that part with ross. That's me keep
the receipts.

Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
Now, you could, you could bookmark these things, but then
you have to pay to get your bookmarks. You gotta
know to pay the bookmarks. Sure, no, you don't have
to pay it, but to go get them, you have
to pay them. Get them? What? Yeah, you have to
be subscribed to Verified to go to your bookmarks.

Speaker 3 (01:04:22):
I can't figure out how to get to my bookmarks. Uh,
maybe I'm doing a poor job, I think. Yeah, I
don't think that's accurate.

Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
Okay, I don't use bookmarks, so I don't know, but
I don't think that's accurate. Oh no, you go right
here to bookmarks. Oh here, look, I accidentally have something bookmarked. Okay, good,
Well you know what. Every bookmark I have is accidental. Yeah,
it's when you're scrolling you hit it back so that
it happens all the time. So this is a random,
uh tweet about Kevin Harlan. So what do we call
what are we gonna call it? Keep keeping the bookmarks,

(01:04:51):
keeping the receipts, keeping the receipts, keep the receipts. So
anything crazy happens in sports, yes, or somebody makes a
crazy prediction. Yes, we need to keep the seats, but
also if we keep the receipt, we have to. To me,
I hate when people are like, oh, I'm going to
remember that, and then you're right, and then they don't
come back to you.

Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
That's true.

Speaker 2 (01:05:08):
So I don't know. We think tank about that, Okay, okay,
Well they'll talk about it in our next show meeting.
We don't have show meetings. Yeah, we do make we
should tuesdays after the show. We haven't had one in
a while. I've been on vacation, you've been out of town.
That's right, that's right, Gordian, I don't Gordy.

Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
Is very busy.

Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
Gordy's at the Sugar Bowl. I think he's programming Santa.
What does he doing it at the Sugar Bowl? I
don't know. He doesn't even have a team there. He's
at SEC Georgia. He's locked on us. He hates half
the teams in the SEC. That's the that's the beauty
of it. I mean, if you're locked on something, shouldn't
you be like objective with all of them? Well, a
locked on LSU was taken, so I guess he couldn't

(01:05:50):
get that one, all right? More phone calls well in
spring WAKD has the best of worst moment of the
year in sports. By the way, d of the year
is tomorrow, Oh, tomorrow, tomorrow and best Do you really
you're looking at me? I'm just kidding.

Speaker 16 (01:06:06):
No.

Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
Uh, the day of the year is already done. Ooh hmm, okay,
I mean it's been done for about six months. Give
her take? Is it Jeff Passing for carrying the Dodgers water?
Can you did you see that tweety day the other day?
As bad?

Speaker 3 (01:06:24):
I'm I've been a Jeff Passing defel. Let me let
me try it.

Speaker 2 (01:06:27):
I will justify well, I'm gonna I'm gonna explain what
passed waid when we come back. We'll get to Will's
call to seven one, three two, seven, ninety eleven thirty four.
It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross the News

(01:06:48):
and noon is coming up in about twenty five minutes.

Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
I thought, you're gonna give up. Here's what I'm giving them.

Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
You're gonna give up.

Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
You're gonna give up news anchor voice for twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
The people love it.

Speaker 3 (01:06:59):
No, they don't.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Yah, they did.

Speaker 3 (01:07:00):
It's annoying.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Let's do an.

Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
We couldn't.

Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
I don't think we have got seven listeners right now?
How can we know as seven listeners? We got at
least one. We'll call it well god listening, got some others. Yes,
Jeremy was listening and said, oh, he was the one
that told me to talk about Beyonce.

Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
Oh okay, uh and then uh.

Speaker 2 (01:07:27):
Tiffany seven to two and Larry Footsack were listening when we
were talking about Wicked. We are your official Wicked talk station.
Rod Ryan's on talking Wicked. He might be Nah, he's gonna,
he's going, what's a bizarre? Are you going for that?
Co host opening?

Speaker 9 (01:07:42):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:07:42):
Yes, I am good the mornings and then you do
this show and then do the rockets.

Speaker 3 (01:07:47):
I mean, I've only got time on my hands.

Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
What's a bizarre? Super so Dad, that's what he does.
You don't have to talk him. I don't talk like him.
I don't go rob what's it Matt's box?

Speaker 3 (01:07:59):
Hey, let's get out of it.

Speaker 2 (01:08:00):
Let's get out of bed with some questions two plus
two four?

Speaker 10 (01:08:03):
All right?

Speaker 12 (01:08:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:08:06):
He leaves those questions on the printer sometimes and I'm
like he he asked people like five o'clock in the morning,
which direction am I missing Northeast South.

Speaker 3 (01:08:17):
H is what that show happened? I don't, Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
I'm honestly and I like Rona Love very talented, but
I absolutely I just don't listen to the show because it's
not my music. I mean, is he in the in
the Radio Texas Radio Hall of Fame should be? He
needs to be in there yesterday. Yeah, I mean he
should be in the way before I should. That's not
even now for discussion. I don't disagree with you. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one

(01:08:44):
three two one two five seven. We you know we've
not talked about what's that the Miami Dolphin, Miami Dolphins,
Miami Hurricane performance in the Bowl game. Well cam Ward
specifically Cam's specifically. We'll get to that coming up in
a little bit here. Let's uh uh talk to uh
Will and spring Well, thanks for holding good morning, Good morning.

Speaker 9 (01:09:03):
I'm gonna go with my best sports moment is going
to be Stroud and Anderson with their Rookie of the
Year awards.

Speaker 3 (01:09:12):
But that isn't that more awful what they did in
twenty twenty three?

Speaker 9 (01:09:16):
Well, but I don't think they got the awards till
twenty four, Right, you're.

Speaker 2 (01:09:20):
Right, yeah, I'm just that's semantics. But I understand what
you're saying. They did get some props. I'll give you that.

Speaker 9 (01:09:27):
Okay. My worst moment is the Astros retaining Dana Brown
as a general manager.

Speaker 3 (01:09:32):
Come on, oh, come on, they're not getting rid of him.
What did he do wrong?

Speaker 9 (01:09:39):
H Tucker Bregman, Well, I.

Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
Mean, do you do you do you think he's making
those decisions? Do you really think he's making those You
think he went to Jim Crane and said, you know what,
we just don't have the money to sign Alex Bregman.
Do you think that the Jim Crane went to and said, hey,
I'll pay him nine years, three sixty and and Dana's like,
that's not that's money not well spend.

Speaker 9 (01:09:59):
I think is the GM. Dana Brown didn't make any
effort to retain Fragman. I think he'd have made an
effort to go to Crane.

Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
That's it, all right, Matt has walked out.

Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Well will Dana Brown is when it comes to money,
he is under the marching orders of Jim Crane. If
Jim Crane says I to sign him to to seven
to ten Dana Brown can do that. It's when it
comes to the final now, when it's not about when
it's about drafting, maybe it's one about trade returns and stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Dana Brown's involved in that.

Speaker 2 (01:10:31):
When it's flat out money with Alex Bregman, that's Jim
Crane's call.

Speaker 9 (01:10:36):
Yeah. Well, I think Brown might have been a good
scout at one time. I just think he's a horrible GM.

Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
Again, give me an example of that.

Speaker 9 (01:10:47):
I just I don't think he's gone to back for
the team. I think he's done everything in his power
to disassemble a winning franchise, and I think we're going
to find that out here over the next couple of years.
That the window that Tran keep saying is open, I
think the windows closed. And I think the GM has
a lot to do with that.

Speaker 2 (01:11:08):
Thank you, Will. I really couldn't disagree more. But I'm
just one voice. I mean, Dana Brown hasn't been perfect, no,
but I think he's been pretty good. Well, okay, let's
do it this way. What is Dana's biggest misstep? I mean,

(01:11:31):
people were upset about the Kakuchi trade, but we'll see
what happened with low Braffito and Will Wagner and Jake
Bloss m h if they're all stars helped. I mean basically,
he knew the starting pitching wasn't good enough. It was
Dana's responsibility to go get the trade done Dana. So Dana,
Dana's fingerprints are all over the Kakuchi trade. Okay, what

(01:12:00):
I didn't do anything I can. He's that's his. Yes,
his Moto is not his trade Breo's not his. Taylor
Scott that's on him. That's good. He was supposed to
build the team through the draft. So far, Bryce Matthews
is going to look like it's looking like a hit

(01:12:21):
probably a year from now. And his third round pick
was Jake Bloss, which got you, you say, Kakuchi, So
that was value already realized from the twenty twenty three draft.
We'll see what happens in the twenty twenty four draft.
I completely one percent believe that the Josh Hater signing
was not on Dana.

Speaker 3 (01:12:37):
That was on Jim's and that's his right.

Speaker 2 (01:12:39):
I mean, Jim's not hitting the fact that he was
a big Josh Hater fan before the year before during
the trade deal, and can we stop with revisionist history
on the Josh hater deal. He was the best closer
in baseball. That was a smash deal. Everyone was doing
cartwheels over it. Did he didn't pitch like the best
closer in baseball last year. But I mean ninety nine

(01:13:01):
and ninety nine out of one thousand Astros fans were
on board with that signing. And I guarantee you the
other twenty eight general managers are like, twenty nine would
be like damn. That was a good deal for them, right,
because Josh Hanner not only was going to give you
what he gave you previously, but he was also willing
to give you more than three outs.

Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
You committed to him, He's gonna commit to you.

Speaker 10 (01:13:23):
Now.

Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
That was the season great for him. No, it was
a good shirt certainly, but not great.

Speaker 12 (01:13:27):
But it wasn't.

Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
It was underperforming, but based off of what he had done,
it's one of the three most dominant clothes in baseball.

Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
Those guys getting nearly twenty million dollars a year, they
just do.

Speaker 2 (01:13:39):
All right. But yeah, Dana's danas got people who's got
a report to He does not have full No general
manager as for nobody me in baseball, No, no, And again,
if the owner wants says, I'm giving you this threshold.
This is as far as you go on something. You know,

(01:14:01):
you do it, you do what you're being told. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety mentling the team.
I don't I get eating. I'm like, man, I can't
wait to have this first gentleman of job. My evil
plan to get rid of Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker
is working. I believe this is the seventh grade frog.
Let's dissect it. That's when. That's why I dissected my

(01:14:21):
first frog. Seventh grade. Okay, what does that have to
do with pull it apart?

Speaker 3 (01:14:26):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
I got you tear it from arm by arm, leg
by leg rainbow connection. Charles seven ninety, Good morning.

Speaker 3 (01:14:36):
Good morning.

Speaker 6 (01:14:37):
I think a great moment is the Astro signing a
first baseman and moving on from you know, they have
get ins the pregnant saga. You know, we know what's happening,
we know what our future is. We can make plans,
we can move on and honestly, if it is kind

(01:14:59):
of out and hit thirty home runs this year, everybody's
going to be saying, Alex, who.

Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
Uh yeah, tell you it's more about paratis. But Christian
Walker can certainly provide. I mean, Christian Walker is going
to provide you look you want, you want powers, your
corner infield spots, right, Rossie, you just do.

Speaker 3 (01:15:16):
First base didn't give you anything last year. It just didn't.
No third base gave you couldn't from Matt.

Speaker 2 (01:15:22):
Yeah, but there is a possibility that Paradis slash Walker
could be every bit and then some of what Bregman
slash fill in the blanket first base last year.

Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:15:33):
In fact, frankly, it should be better in aggregate. Yes, yeah,
the old moneyball. And we're losing Jason Giambi. We got
to make up for him. We're losing Alex Breggan. We've
got to make up for him in aggregate somehow, And
I think they did that. I think Christian Walker is
gonna be great again. All he does is scoop everything
up at first.

Speaker 3 (01:15:49):
Base now the outfield.

Speaker 2 (01:15:53):
At one great outfield last year, dupon Meyer's and McCormick.

Speaker 3 (01:15:56):
Use your right hand. I'm left handed. Why can't I
fist pump with my left hand?

Speaker 2 (01:16:01):
If I'm left hand, I am an equal fist bumper boom, boom,
Look at it. Okay, you're ambi dextrous as you say ambidextross.
I'm proud of you. I've never seen an ambidextro. Are
you getting ambidextross? I swear you're making stuff up. I
don't know how to dig through hours and hours of tape,
but absolutely sphere and talk about it. We'll go to
the sphere and talk about it the sphere. It's ambidextrous.

Speaker 3 (01:16:25):
We are sphear.

Speaker 2 (01:16:26):
Look at this guy. You taught me something. I gave
you credit for that. I teach you every day. You
just don't know what put the right hand up. There's
your left hand for everything. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety We're gonna come back real quick. Give
us some more phone calls. And this cam Ward bit
at Miami, I mean, Matt Thomas ten years ago probably

(01:16:48):
would have been like unbelievable outrage. College athletics has changed,
just has forty four Sports Talk seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven nine. If you want
to join the conversation at seven one three two one
two five seven night. If you want to follow us
on Twitter, you may do that as well at sports
MT at sports RV and at Connor d McGovern eleven

(01:17:10):
forty four, seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (01:17:12):
More Matt Thomas Show with Ross Now on Sports Talk
seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
The News at noon is coming up, and then at
twelve fifteen we're gonna check in over in Texanville with
Demiko Ryans will speak to the media for the first
time this week, getting ready for the finale Sunday in
Nashville against the Titans. A couple of college news stories
to pass along. Six former Florida State basketball players followed
the suit today against former coach Leonard Hamilton over unpaid

(01:17:41):
promises of nil compensation that total one point five million dollars.
The players acknowledged within the documents that they bought counted
a practice last season over the missed payments.

Speaker 3 (01:17:54):
Please call me mister naive.

Speaker 2 (01:17:58):
Okay, the coaches can't promise promise anything. The collective can
but the problem, but the coaches can. I need and
we need a illegal expert on this. I have no
idea what type of promises they're given, how legally binding
any I mean, if the coach texts them that we

(01:18:18):
can get you, this is that illegally binding promise. Doesn't
seem like it is Now did Leonard Hamilton probably say
go find Joe Johnson over there at Tallahassee Ford and
he'll take care of you.

Speaker 3 (01:18:28):
I'm sure he did. Yeah, and Joe Johnson was like, no,
I'm good. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:18:37):
Yeah, this is why the NCAA was like, we're not
getting involved.

Speaker 3 (01:18:42):
I was having a text.

Speaker 2 (01:18:44):
I was having a text executive text with some sports
executives in town last weekend, and they're like, explain this
that il think. I said, there's nothing to explain. There's
no rules. The only rule is the college cannot directly
pay you. Somebody else can. Now, the college can affiliated
with the collective. Yeah, so if Leonard Hamilton says go
to the collective, the collective says I don't have any

(01:19:05):
money for you, then then guilt by association, I guess.
But Leonard Hamilton cannot run. Leonard Hamilton cannot venmo these
players money, right, And that's how it comes across as
did Leonard. There is there a proof that Leonard Hamilton
said the money's on its way and it didn't happen.
I mean, I'm not dug deep into it. I just

(01:19:26):
it just literally came out a couple of hours. Yeah,
the lawsuit is alleging he failed to make good on
a promise to get each of them two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars and name image, likeness compensation, So like
I got you and he never got them, Right, wasn't
a failed payment. The former players allege Hamilton promised the

(01:19:46):
money from his quote business partners end quote.

Speaker 3 (01:19:55):
They ended up playing.

Speaker 2 (01:19:56):
Now they had walked out of the practice as you
mentioned on February seve seventeenth, to boycott a game against Duke.
They ended up playing amid a guarantee from Hamilton that
it would be paid, but never were.

Speaker 3 (01:20:12):
No wonder coaches are dropping like flies. Yeah, you just
had the coach.

Speaker 2 (01:20:16):
From Miami, Lerniago or however you say it, Larenega saying
he went to the final four and eight players were like,
all right, I'll see you later. They wanted to leave
the team off the bigger and better things. Who knows
they're transferring or whatever, taking advantage of the close they've received.

(01:20:36):
Yeah right, all right, So cam Ward is the coach
or the quarterback in Miami. Yes, and apparently had a
very good first half in their bowl game. Yes, I
want to say they were up double digits at least
ten going to the fourth quarter, and then he at

(01:21:00):
halftimes said I'm done. And apparently the coach at Miami
knew about it. Okay, so it was planned for him
to do with just a half. It was not publicly
ever discussed, okay, And I believe who's the coach at Miami?

Speaker 9 (01:21:14):
Is it?

Speaker 3 (01:21:14):
Is it not?

Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
Many days? Is it? It's?

Speaker 4 (01:21:16):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:21:18):
Who's the Miami God? I don't. I don't even know
if you give me many oh, Mario Cristoval, let me see, Yeah,
Mario Cristobal, he said, we've I don't, I don't. I
don't want to paraphrase here. So basically it was he
was not He was not completely caught off guard by this. Okay,

(01:21:41):
Matt Thomas two thousand, what are we in twenty four now?
Matt Thomas twenty fourteen would have thought this was the
biggest outrage and the biggest bush League moment of all time.

Speaker 3 (01:21:52):
But I have such little We're desensitized, I have.

Speaker 2 (01:21:56):
Such little respect for the college athletic game right now
that I'm first of all, I guess I'm supposed to
be outraged by it, but I can't be because, frankly,
ROSSI the last ten years, we've seen bull participation among
highly drafted players or drafted players falling off. I mean
there was one team that couldn't even feel the team

(01:22:17):
because of all the transfer portals and guys leaving. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:22:22):
Was it Marshall. I want to say it was.

Speaker 2 (01:22:24):
A Marshall opted out of their bowl. Yeah, because they
had all the another team last year that opted out.
College athletics is a cesspool of money and greed and
nil and all that kind of stuff in portal. Let's
not if I get the portal by the way, Let's
we got to make sure the portal gets it put
into play. Here that when cam Ward left at halftime,

(01:22:44):
I kind of went, it's par for the course. And
I don't want to be I don't want to be
that way, Ross because that let's that lets the bad
guys win. But the bad guys are running college athletics.
And it probably to a bigger point ROSSI probably explained
that maybe you should just get rid of the bulls
unless you're playing in a playoff, skip the balls, because

(01:23:06):
what it's what it's turning out to be is we're
turning out to have either lousy bowls that no one's
going to but no one's watching, or we're having teams
split up and not play because they're trying to protect
their draft status, or they're entering the portal. There's nothing
entertaining or fun except the damn Pop Tart's Bowl, which
that remains to be the one of the bright jewels
of the of the Facilita football season. All right, tho,

(01:23:29):
I mean there's there's nothing enjoyable about balls anymore. Well,
the Colorado Buffaloes had Shador Sanders and Travis Hunter and
a lot of their players opt in, and that was admirable.

Speaker 3 (01:23:40):
And then they got their ass kicked by b Way.
That's another thing.

Speaker 2 (01:23:43):
You if you are playing a team in your own conference,
that's not a bowl game, it's their first matchup of
the year.

Speaker 3 (01:23:50):
I don't care. That's ridiculous, the.

Speaker 2 (01:23:54):
Fact of way it's gonna happen somewhere where all these
conferences have sixteen teams in them. Now, don't you think
it was weird? Yeah, it's weird, but it's part for
the course. Now everything's weird, and more partly the weird
than Rutgers and USC here in the Big Ten. Okay,
it doesn't make sense. None of it makes sad way,
why weren't you at the DOMA Bowl game? They always
have a seat reserved for you. Yes, the seat was empty.

(01:24:17):
They lit a candle in my honor. They have a
fans Hall of Fame and you're in it. No class,
no sir, Peach Bowl this weekend or this next week
or this upcoming week.

Speaker 3 (01:24:27):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:24:27):
I guess I was supposed to be outrage and running
my Twitter account and tell you how outrage I was,
but I just wasn't because it's just the filth that
is college athletics right now. Even five years ago, this
would have been shocking. Now it's like, oh, okay, that's
kind of surprising, but not shocking. I'm not. I don't
think it's commendable, but I'm not like if Cam walked
in right now and you're.

Speaker 3 (01:24:46):
Like, Brah, how are you good? Look in your drafts?

Speaker 2 (01:24:50):
You know the old trope of you know, these NFL
teams they want to see competitors, They want to see
people that want to be there for their teammates and brothers.
Last year's draft Caleb one, Jayden Daniels to Drake May three,
they all opted out of their bowl games. In reality,
is you can go. You can go glass half full
on this cam. Thank you for your service for the
first half. We looked good for a while. Thank you,

(01:25:13):
and then they lost and they lost. The news at
noon is coming up in a matter of moments. Then
we have twelve fifteen c J Strouds press. I have
I said one more time Demiko Ryan's press availability.

Speaker 3 (01:25:25):
That's all.

Speaker 2 (01:25:26):

Speaker 2 (01:26:43):
On Sports Talk seven to ninety to Miko. Ryan speaks
in about ten minutes from now. But right now we
go to the news desk for the news at noon. Okay, Matt,
we have a lot to get to on the news
ahead Sports use it. I am not dying to use

(01:27:08):
any sort of alternate voice. The Rockets with a one
oh four to one hundred loss to the Miami Heat
last night. There of course was a big altercation between
Amen Thompson and others. Well, actually, I don't think this
is gonna work. Give me one second here, Okay, there we.

Speaker 13 (01:27:26):
Go, and now we got a mental roll and Tyler
Green and a bunch of players on both sides. I
caught it late, but Man Thompson got thrown down, Tyler
hero Is being restrained, Thompson on the Rocket side, Rosier

(01:27:49):
getting involved, Shan Gun getting involved.

Speaker 2 (01:27:53):
Aman Thompson tossed Tyler here down like a rag dolf.
Amen Thompson a jet did from the game, Matt, I
will set the over under games suspended at two point oh,
I thought you're gona say one and a half, two
feels two? You think it'll be three?

Speaker 3 (01:28:11):
It was Tarry Easton got three recently?

Speaker 9 (01:28:13):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:28:14):
Or who somebody did?

Speaker 14 (01:28:15):
Now?

Speaker 3 (01:28:16):
Who on the Rockets got a three game suspension?

Speaker 2 (01:28:19):
Didn't somebody get suspended recently? Not for never. I'm not
thinking of somebody else. Guys that have heard, but suspended hmm,
I'm gonna go the over. I think he's gonna be
gone for two games, two games. I said it at
two point zero, going with a push.

Speaker 3 (01:28:38):
That's why, that's why you should have gone one and
a half.

Speaker 2 (01:28:40):
Who gets two feels like the favorite? Okay, we're going
with the push. Okay, going with the push. There two
point zero games. Tyler Hero speaking to the media after
the game. Here is what he had to say about
the altercation, ew and Thompson exchanging words.

Speaker 3 (01:28:54):
Out did it all? It really cost spark off?

Speaker 14 (01:28:56):
There. Uh, just come some two competitors going at it
playing basketball.

Speaker 2 (01:29:02):
And then they got a little out of here.

Speaker 15 (01:29:03):
It's not every single night that you have all those
texts and all of those ejections. Was it building to
that or was it just a standard physical game that
just had one of those igniting moments?

Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
Just a physical game.

Speaker 17 (01:29:15):
I don't know.

Speaker 14 (01:29:16):
I guess that's what happens when someone's scoring, throwing dimes,
doing the whole thing.

Speaker 2 (01:29:22):
So I get mad too. I get mad too, says
Tyler Hero. Matthew, your reaction to that they're gonna throw
hands again in Miami in February? Do you think so?
Just I forge a lot that in this is.

Speaker 3 (01:29:39):
Not gonna be necessarily settled right away?

Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
Okay, But Tyler Hero continues to own the Rockets and
it's sat because I don't like Tyler Herro, but I
respect the hell out of them.

Speaker 3 (01:29:50):
He was making jump shots all over the place last night.

Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
Twenty seven points, nine assists.

Speaker 3 (01:29:55):
All the dimes you do? I forgot about the dimes.

Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
Don't forget about the dimes her Tyler hero As now
the bottom line for the Houston Rockets. Matt, we were
talking about this big five game homestand and falling flat
so far the first two games. A huge collapse against
the Minnesota Timberwolves, the first time they came back from
down fifteen plus and a fourth quarter on the road
since two thousand and.

Speaker 3 (01:30:18):
Three? Was it Kevin Garnett was a wolf at that point?

Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
Right, huge collapse there, also collapsing against the Heat with
a loss. All right, how are we feeling about the
Rockets right now? Feeling that you're looking? First of all,
Miami gets credit for closing down the paint last night.
Rockets couldn't get there. I think Jaaling got there maybe twice.

(01:30:42):
Maybe I'll be once or twice in the second half,
but it felt like a lot of perimeter shots were
being taken by the Rockets, and that's not their strong suit.

Speaker 3 (01:30:50):
They've got to continue to attack the.

Speaker 2 (01:30:51):
Basket and I would have gone after auto bio because
he had the five fouls. Now, is it hard to
get a six and the NBA, yes, But it also
means that he is willing to go up and for
block shots and push people around and whatnot. I think
it was a big part of the game that was
that was lacking, was they did not attack the basket
like they should have. They settled for jump shots in it.
And unfortunately, this is just not a very good team
shooting wise. Everything else they do very very well. But

(01:31:13):
the still the search for that pure shooter at this
point on this roster is still you're still searching for it.
Continuing along in the news at noon, Adam A. J.
Wexler Sports Talk seven to nineties own with some observations
from Texans practice. Linebacker Aziz al Shire is back and
practicing now that his three game suspension is over. Also,

(01:31:36):
wide receiver Deontay Johnson wearing a number eighty two catching passes.
We'll find out hopefully more about who will be starting
the game coming up from Demiico Ryans will have that
for you here on Sports Talk seven ninety in just
a few minutes. But would you say the addition of
Deontay Johnson and possibly wanting to build some on field

(01:31:56):
chemistry with him, bolstering the argument that c J, Stroud
and the starters need to be out there at least
for some time against its CJ needs to throw three
passes to Deontay Johnson this Sunday against Tennessee.

Speaker 3 (01:32:09):
Yeah, I don't care what they are.

Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
Put them in pass routes, but you have to establish
some sort of timing and practice isn't gonna be able
to do it, not to the level that you would
have in a regular season game against the team that
doesn't know what you're thrown at him. CJ should go
a half.

Speaker 3 (01:32:26):
Larmie Townson needs to go a half.

Speaker 2 (01:32:28):
Joe Mixon needs to go a half, and then we'll
see plenty of money meals in the second half and
be fine. Okay, now we do have to get to
a little bit of a quicker break here, Matt. So
I'm gonna go straight to the off beat story. Matt,
who is the world number one chess player? Do you
know Pat McAfee, Magnus Carlson the world number one at

(01:32:49):
the feet eight World Rapid and Blitz Championships. That's rapid
games faster to fifteen minutes, a shorter time controls.

Speaker 3 (01:32:55):
Are you a good chess player?

Speaker 2 (01:32:57):
Okay, I don't play much anymore.

Speaker 3 (01:32:58):
I was getting too addicted.

Speaker 2 (01:33:00):
I had to quit. Sure I would say, I'm okay,
I'm above average slightly. Uh, but world, I'm not as
good as world number one Magnus Carlson. Apparently fee Day,
the world governing body of chess, has thrown him out
of the World rappid in Blitz. Why you ask? Because
he refused to change from his genes purely from a

(01:33:22):
dress code standpoint, fee Day asked him if he would
go and change into trousers. He refused, kept his jeans on,
then was thrown out of the tournament and said, bleep
you to fee Day.

Speaker 3 (01:33:38):
Hmmm, have you ever been thrown out of anywhere for
dress code?

Speaker 2 (01:33:41):
Now, in Ner Orleans, we were going to some nice
restaurants where like some place's coats are require some places
you have to have a colored shirt.

Speaker 3 (01:33:47):
How did you do on that?

Speaker 2 (01:33:48):
I was great. I didn't get thrown out anywhere. But
have you ever had any dress code issues?

Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
Matt No.

Speaker 2 (01:33:53):
One time I was in New Orleans and I was
in shorts and we were going to go to Burton's.
And we walked in and we said, did we fill
on address? He goes, do you have cash your credit card?
And we said yes and use You're more than welcome
to come here. Some people were Some people are more
liberal than others. Some some restaurants are more liberal than others.
Really quick, we were talking about the portal. The University of

(01:34:13):
Houston just released they have fifteen new players on the
team for next year, which is a good sign because
the fifteen they were replacing probably are going to be
not as good as this one. This crop will be
better than when last year was out there. Okay, they
have fifteen new transfers coming new Mexico, Oklahoma State, Louisiana, Baylor, Tulsa,
text Tech, uab A and M California, LSU, Utah, Louisiana,

(01:34:35):
Southern miss Washington State.

Speaker 3 (01:34:37):
Old dominion.

Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
Is that crazy? Fifteen transfers? Well, didn't they have sixty
new players last year?

Speaker 10 (01:34:47):
Well?

Speaker 2 (01:34:48):
Yeah, so they're reducing their number a little, whittling it down.
That's good. Isn't that crazy though, because you would you
would be boasting a fifteen transfer. Usually when you go
to transfer, like back in the day, you were just
taking guys that were like, oh you you didn't planning
where It's fine now guys looking to go better places
and collect on ao HM's maybe.

Speaker 3 (01:35:05):
The nil money you'veation is better than it has been.

Speaker 2 (01:35:07):
I don't hear you complaining about the portal when it's
the U of H racking up.

Speaker 3 (01:35:10):
I'm not bragging.

Speaker 2 (01:35:11):
I'm just saying declaring it. And if they want to
win some games and we go to the Big twelve
championship game like we deserve next year, we're good.

Speaker 3 (01:35:17):
And there's your newsic non all right, uh Domiico speaks
next twelve to twelve Sports Talk seven.

Speaker 7 (01:35:21):
Ninety more Matt Thomas Show with Ross Now on Sports
Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:35:30):
Tomaico's running late, so we're gonna go some phone calls
because the people that want to say hello, and we'd
like to say hello to you. We really appreciate you
guys spending your twenty twenty four with us and hopefully
be with us in twenty twenty five. It'll be fifteen years.
Start your fifteen of this radio show next week.

Speaker 3 (01:35:45):
Yeah, oh.

Speaker 2 (01:35:49):
You look disgusted by this. No, I'm sorry, it's just
you know, sorry, it's pulled a pull the trice up.
You pull those facus and you're going Nick because exactly
seven one three two one two five is seven Ninty John,
Northwest Houston on Sevenaintie, Hi John, thanks for.

Speaker 10 (01:36:05):
Holding Hey matt enjoy the show. Thank you. Yet I
wanted to chime in. I think that I don't agree
with the people have been critical about what the Astros
have done. I think that they've done a good job.
I think they need a little change in some of
the areas. The thing that bothered me about Tucker was
he was such a bust.

Speaker 2 (01:36:26):
In the playoffs.

Speaker 10 (01:36:27):
You know, I really blamed him, like for I put
a lot on him because that's why we lost to
the Rangers.

Speaker 2 (01:36:33):
I thought, you know, he.

Speaker 10 (01:36:35):
Was he wasn't playing well out in the field. He
certainly wasn't hitting, and he's done that the last few
years in the playoffs. So I was ready to move
on from him and Brakman. Brakman, you know, we got
the best years out of Brakman, and I don't think
that where he's at right now, I don't think it
warrants getting like a you know, a significant raise, like
what he's asking for. So I'm fine with the Astros

(01:36:57):
moving on from him. I think that trade with Chicago,
I think that was a good trade, uh you know,
getting uh you know, Parids to Houston. You know, we
got a picture Hayden, uh was Nesky and and Cam
Smith is supposed to a really good prospect. He's become
our number one, number one UH player in the minor

(01:37:17):
leagues as we made that trade. And so I agree
with I agree with all those moves, I really do.
I think what the Ashros need to do is they
need to go back to what was really working for him,
where they had you know, the uh, the modern metrics
and and you know what Luno brought in and uh,
you know, really building through the minor leagues. Because even

(01:37:37):
when you look at Korea and Springer and those guys,
we got the best years out of those guys too.
And that's a formula that has worked for the Ashros.
It's brought him, uh you know, it's brought us two
World Series championships, and we went we went away from
that a little bit, I think because they were starting
to listen to Bagwell and some people that didn't like
it as much. But I think what they were doing

(01:37:57):
was the right way because they were you know, they
had old fashion scouting with you know, headed by Nolan
Ryan at the time, the modern metrics, and that was working.
And a lot of other teams are going to this.
So the Astros do have a good formula. I think
the Orioles have followed this now and they've you know,
plucked away some of our people and uh, but I
think the Astro's got to stick with what's worked in

(01:38:18):
the past, and I think we need an infusion of
young players and and so.

Speaker 2 (01:38:22):
I like, I like what they're doing. I like what
Dana Brown's doing right now.

Speaker 10 (01:38:25):
I think it's I think it's good. Thanks Jon, bothered
by this at all?

Speaker 3 (01:38:29):
Okay, good, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (01:38:32):
Look, I never in a million years felt that Cale
Tucker was going to come back and rossell you and
I and I'm not we're trying to brag here, but
we're just stating fact that you and I were, like,
we knew this for a long period of time and
going to this full hope that one more year wearing
an Astro uniform is going to all of a sudden
change Kyle Tucker's mind about what his value is and

(01:38:53):
where he thinks you get it. When he knows the
reputation of the Astra as an organization is to pay
only to a certain level only first hurt length of time.
Dana knows that, Jim knows that Kyle knew that. That's
why there was really known conversations of a long term deal.
And when Dana Brown said what he said about trying
to keep Kyle Tucker here last year a long term
and ask for life, he was he was talking of

(01:39:16):
his ass because he had to say that. You had
to say these things, but it was the right thing
to do. Get move him now before you're sitting there
holding a high draft pick, whatever that level may be.
But that draft pick, first of all, isn't guaranteed to
be successful. Secondly, could be three to four years for
that pick is successful. You have to if you want

(01:39:39):
to stay relevant, you got to make You got to
get ahead of the game and make moves, sometimes a year.

Speaker 3 (01:39:44):
Earlier before it's a year too late.

Speaker 2 (01:39:46):
Yeah, Cam Smith is a more prized prospect than a
potential draft pick which you don't even know where you're picking. Yeah, yeah,
I had, and I like how a lot. I'm not
going to blame him for h October's failure because, frankly,
ninety five percent of baseball players fell in October, and it.

Speaker 3 (01:40:03):
Was it was two games this year.

Speaker 14 (01:40:05):
Two games.

Speaker 2 (01:40:05):
Well, he's talking about the year before. I think the
year before was that games. That wasn't Yeah, he wasn't
he there was. There was a lot of dejection in
the Kyle Tucker body frame during that time. Well, yeah,
he was bunting and clutch situations by the end of it.

Speaker 3 (01:40:17):
That's how poorly he was playing.

Speaker 2 (01:40:19):
Yeah, So all I'm saying is I didn't I Look,
you can criticize, you can applaud the local teams.

Speaker 3 (01:40:25):
I do things right and wrong.

Speaker 2 (01:40:26):
I have zero issue with them suuring up two interior
positions because Christian Walker isn't here. If he's not willing
to accept a three year, mid year mid level offer
in terms of not necessarily compensation, but years, signing a
first basement in his thirties always works out. Little thirties

(01:40:47):
gold glove thirties jose Bra you couldn't say that that's true.

Speaker 3 (01:40:51):
Three time gold Glover Christian Walker in a row.

Speaker 2 (01:40:53):
Right, let's go to a biscuit on seven ninety and
twelve twenty two.

Speaker 3 (01:40:57):
Biscuit, what's a good word, my.

Speaker 4 (01:40:59):
Man Cooger mad Cougar.

Speaker 3 (01:41:01):
Matt, you, sir, hey.

Speaker 4 (01:41:02):
Man, listen before I get to my tape on top
moments of the year, I would say to all those
astro fans, hey Man, the metrics wasn't won championship. It
was the player. They had the talent, and they're just
not as talented.

Speaker 9 (01:41:16):
As they was.

Speaker 4 (01:41:17):
And they you know, when they had Springer in Korea
and you know, and that's that's baseball, I guess, you know.
But we'll see next year, this trade or whatever works out.
But they not as talented, Matt. That's you know, That's
that's how it goes well.

Speaker 2 (01:41:32):
From an outfield perspective, you are losing a five too player.
There's you cannot possibly argue that. You could say the
infil next year could be every bit as good, at
least offensively. Defensively, I don't know if a party will
tell me if he's a good defense at their basement.
I know Alex Bregman is a goal glover case in
Point just won one. But Christian Walker's a goal glover,

(01:41:52):
first base Christian Government Christian Glover. Christian Walker is a
guy that's gonna probably hit at least twenty five bombs.
It feels like to me that, and it made Parks
a great base for him to go. And you don't
have to worry about trying to sell yourself on John
Singleton three days a week.

Speaker 4 (01:42:10):
Yeah, a valid points, Matt. And then the old folk say,
we shall see, but can I get yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:42:17):
And real quick and will give Yards a chance to
either Fisher Cup Bait as a legitimate major league every
day catcher, or when Christian Walker leaves in three years,
Yds finishes the rest of his career at first base.

Speaker 3 (01:42:30):
Now your points, sir, go ahead.

Speaker 4 (01:42:32):
My point is the moments of the year, Matt. Number
one is kind of personal for me. But little Steve
returned that pun against the Ravens last year in the playoffs.

Speaker 9 (01:42:42):
You know, he grew up.

Speaker 4 (01:42:43):
I grew up with and coasting whatever he goes my
church or whatever and his mom the other day. The
second thing, Matt was, I told you last year that
the Coopers was gonna break that streak of Kansas winning
the Big twelve UH championship or whatever as far as
basketball goals. But the downer, Matt, and I'm surprised you
hadn't seen it in Matt, is when Jamal Ankle against them.

(01:43:08):
That was a down or the year for me. Yeah,
you know, I thought I thought we had it last year.
Mad if we could have gotten by Duke, Well.

Speaker 2 (01:43:18):
We just we ran into depth issues because of injuries.
And that's what every college team goes through. I mean,
college basketball will be lucky. In any sport to win
a championship, College basketball essentially is about a seven minute rotation.
If you have more than seven, you're considered blessed. Thanks
Biscuit for the phone call. Injury luck.

Speaker 3 (01:43:35):
Is in factors in almost every championship.

Speaker 2 (01:43:38):
Yeah, in sports. Yeah, so yeah, and the Cougar's this year.
Gotta keep the big man healthy. They just do. And
it's not been a great run in the last couple
of weeks. Been keeping guys healthy. Now they're still winning,
but you know what, you're about to get into some
heavy competition, come big twelve play. What's been happening. How's
Cougar basketball doing?

Speaker 3 (01:43:57):
Okay, they're doing fine.

Speaker 2 (01:43:58):
Okay, Well, we beat up on her Texa and that's good.
Corpus Christie, Oh the Islanders, leave them alone. We did
leave Malone. Let them shoot all they wanted to, didn't
want to make any shots. Let's talk to Chris and
the Heights at twelve twenty five. Hi, Chris, Hey, how
are you today.

Speaker 18 (01:44:16):
I'm well, thank you for taking the call.

Speaker 5 (01:44:19):
You have a really good show there.

Speaker 18 (01:44:20):
Thank you, so, I'm I love watching the Rockets. They're exciting.
They're head coach is I think it's fantastic. I think
he's the right man for the job. I don't claim
to be a basketball guru, but one of the things

(01:44:40):
as a casual observer that I've noticed is that the
Rockets are incredibly.

Speaker 12 (01:44:48):
Hap hat.

Speaker 4 (01:44:48):
I mean, their passes.

Speaker 18 (01:44:51):
Are not Chris. I think they put themselves in a
situation where when the opposing team is playing the passing
lanes and they're they're able to get a lot of stills,
a lot of their passes or lobs. I don't understand
why a coach like the one that we have doesn't
preach more Chris safer passes, and just a couple of

(01:45:18):
other things. And I'm going to hang up and listen.
But a lot of times Jamon Green reminds me of
Harden when he's sitting up there at the top of
the key and just bouncing and bouncing and bouncing and
looking for something to do, and he and Fred VanVleet.
In a lot of situations, they drive and they put
themselves in situations where they've got nowhere to go with

(01:45:40):
the ball, and then we lose the ball. That's all
I have to say, thank you very much, and I
do enjoy the show.

Speaker 3 (01:45:45):
Thank you, Eric. I would not criticize the passing.

Speaker 2 (01:45:50):
I don't think that is an element of frankly anything
I see in the NBA where I go man that
passionate and crisper. I mean, there was a couple it
was like a Friday characteristic football passes from Fred van Vliet.

Speaker 3 (01:46:02):
It happens here and there.

Speaker 2 (01:46:03):
But turnover percentage in the NBA, the Rockets are third best. Yeah,
they're just yeah, thirty teams, they're always in the top
ten and fewest turnovers. So I would say they're not
overly careless. Yeah, I mean every turnover you could say
shouldn't have been made correct, right unless you're trying. Yeah,
if you're really trying to force things. The dribbling, I

(01:46:27):
don't think it's as much Jalen Green dribbling out things
at the top.

Speaker 3 (01:46:30):
Of the key as it has been in years past.
I think they're more moving everything.

Speaker 2 (01:46:33):
Yeah, and again I see every game, so just take
it for what it is. But I feel like the
Rockets do their best to make the extra pass. They're
always trying to find the open man. I think defensive,
there have been some teams that have put hands in
face ross and face guarded and boxed out and done
some things to force the Rockets to take some contested
shots I don't want to take.

Speaker 3 (01:46:55):
I don't. I don't think it's a question of not
trying to get in there.

Speaker 2 (01:46:58):
I also believe that in the fourth quarter of the
game last night, they did settle for the for the
outside shot because I don't feel like they felt that
they can get out. Could not go against I May,
I could go against Bam out of Bayo and do anything.
And that was a troubling part of the game. Is
the number of paint points against Minnesota was like sixty six.

(01:47:19):
They were in the low forties last night. That's quite
a discrepancy for one game in the next. It's yeah,
I think the offense is pretty good. It's just a
three point shooting it's horrible. They're twenty ninth in the
NBA and three point shooting bottom five and field goal
percentage thirty two point seven percent three point percentage as
a team, you can't Jesus, you're gonna if you're if

(01:47:40):
you're gonna shoot it that way. That's who they are
at this point there, That's what they are. Everything else
the intangibles have to be in place. You can't let
up defensive lapses, you can't allow the open three, you
can't turn the ball over feel like ever. You gotta
get on the fast break when the rockets fast spring
points have been very good so far this year, so
they're doing again. This still is a team has ten
games over five hundred. It's by no means a disastrous

(01:48:01):
matter of fact, it's been very very fun to watch.
Twenty ninth and three point percentage, twenty fifth and two
point percentage not great, twenty fifth and free throw percentage.
The fact that they're as good as they are is
a miracle of how I'm saying, pre dominant there. Every
bit of the intangibles they're doing is working. Yeah, I

(01:48:24):
think Easton, you know, and look, Tari's been gone what
six games now something like that. Yes, Uh, Dylan's coming
back off a missing three. You know, they're they're the terror.
Twins made a huge impact on this team. Earlier this year,
and there are two great guys come off the bench.
Steven Adams. For as much as a as a pick
machine that he is, he doesn't provide any offensively. So

(01:48:47):
basically you're you're guarding four guys on the rockets end
of the four when Adams is out there. The difference
between Shngoon playing offensively and Steven Adams is worlds apart. Yes,
and I think teams know that. Back with hopefully to
meet and Eric and you at seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety.

Speaker 17 (01:49:04):
Sports Talk plus yat Rock, Houston's smoothest sports.

Speaker 7 (01:49:10):
Guy more Matt Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk.

Speaker 2 (01:49:18):
I thought we were about to hear Rosanna right there
by Toto. By the way, Ross, you got to watch
that yacht rock documentary. Absolutely fantastic. What is so fantastic
about the documentary about the made up genre. It's a
genre that made millions of dollars, lots of stars, got
good rhythm, it's got blues, it's got uh, it's got

(01:49:39):
jazz to it, it's got pop, it's got rock and roll.

Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
It's a good man made up.

Speaker 2 (01:49:44):
Those are genres that you just listed that rock is
not a genre I didn't call it a genre, just
calling the music. It's a Scots a move, it's a move,
it's the way we live. It's a revolution, exactly right.
Brett Siegel writes for Clutch Points, says he thinks a
man's gonna get at least two games to two to

(01:50:05):
three seems about right. Yeah, can you can you appeal
and you go three? Go down to two and play?
I don't know, majorly, Baseball is a king of appealing,
and you know you wait forever before you finally hear
it from somebody.

Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
Also, they have I think six cracked boards in the
rockets floor.

Speaker 2 (01:50:17):
They're gonna have to replace. Boy Tyler, he got right
back up. I mean, I guess always credit. But he
didn't want to. He didn't want to be laying down
for a while, because the look, you gotta get right
up from that. You can't. You can't go like full
soccer and start rolling around and stuff. You gotta get
up and at least act like you're gonna fight, and
then put on your sunglasses and try to look cool

(01:50:38):
after the game, which he did. Sunglass guy in the daylight,
Sunglass Guy in an arena, just a douche, and that
goes for anybody. What about I'll give you one exception, please,
A UFC or boxing fighter after a fight, when their
faces are totally feels fair. That feels extraordinarily fair, their

(01:51:02):
eyes falling out of their socket. They got to do
an interview. But I can we stop with the postgame
fight interviews of boxers and UFC fighters.

Speaker 3 (01:51:10):
They're literally concussed.

Speaker 2 (01:51:11):
I just I just lose respect for your wearing the
shades inside in a building, especially at nine thirty at night.

Speaker 3 (01:51:17):
But if you got some kind of you know, light
sensitivity like me.

Speaker 2 (01:51:22):
No, I've been walking, I've been with you in a
a lot of public areas. You've never put shades on,
and if you did, I'd call you on it. I
was getting a headache when I was hanging out with
on the A team with Adam Wester and the TV
lights came on.

Speaker 3 (01:51:34):
Yeah did you get on TV?

Speaker 16 (01:51:36):
I did?

Speaker 3 (01:51:36):
Did you shave or anything?

Speaker 9 (01:51:37):
Or no?

Speaker 3 (01:51:37):
Tell her your hair a little bit or something?

Speaker 4 (01:51:39):
Color?

Speaker 9 (01:51:39):
My hair?

Speaker 3 (01:51:40):
Does a screen look cold?

Speaker 2 (01:51:41):
I don't care. You are in your forties now, Yeah,
I'm old. It's over like it was done. We're done
doing anything. Let's talk to Eric in Bay City on
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross the old guy.

Speaker 16 (01:51:52):
Hi, Eric, I heard that, saw you let out you
know what's coming. The best moments of twenty twenty four
was the four games that joe'spota got ejected because he
gave us our best chance possible to win.

Speaker 3 (01:52:06):
Oh here it comes Zach Greanky in three two one coach.

Speaker 19 (01:52:12):
Okay, hold on, hold on, No.

Speaker 16 (01:52:13):
The worst moment was trading Joey Loberffido, whose.

Speaker 19 (01:52:17):
Name would look so good as an outfield possibility right
now compared to those three guys. We've got his outfield
possibilities right now for a two month rental that got
us to the playoffs. We didn't even use the guy,
and we lose to the Detroit Tigers, managed by a
much better manager. And of course all we had.

Speaker 9 (01:52:32):
To do was bring back Zach.

Speaker 2 (01:52:36):
Thank you, Eric, appreciate it, Eric and new Yor's resolution
never out of the words Zach and Greenky ever again,
thank you very much. Forty three games as a Toronto
Blue Jay, Joey lo Parfito hit one ninety seven. He
did have two home runs that you're selling it like
it's a positive. Five seventy nine ops and fifty two outs.

Speaker 3 (01:53:01):
All right, let's go to Demikoo.

Speaker 2 (01:53:04):
Having diseased back out there on the field.

Speaker 12 (01:53:07):
We mean for you guys and lift you good, really great.

Speaker 20 (01:53:10):
Giving a disease back, I know it missed him over
these past three weeks, has missed his presence, his leadership,
missed you know, he's play making ability on the field.
So you know we're excited to get him back out there.
Let him knock some of the rust off.

Speaker 8 (01:53:25):
You think will be the biggest kat of your teams
to playing behind what happened last week and moving on
this week.

Speaker 15 (01:53:30):
In a positive way.

Speaker 12 (01:53:31):
For us to move forward, we have to go play better.

Speaker 20 (01:53:34):
And that's what it comes down to, us playing better football,
Like that's all that matters. Like when we step across
those white lines, are we executing? Are we playing really
good football? That's all that matters to me. All right,
just start, coaches, players, we all got to do our
jobs better. And that's what I'm looking forward to this week.

Speaker 21 (01:53:54):
But you guys locked into the four seed, how much
consideration will there be too? Kind of manage some of
the snaps from the start that you guys have going
into the K team.

Speaker 20 (01:54:05):
Hey, going into this game, is I mentioned to all
our guys that everybody has to be ready to go,
and that's where we are. Everybody will be out there
playing and we'll, you know, we'll see how the game goes.

Speaker 12 (01:54:17):
But for us right now, we gotta go play better.

Speaker 20 (01:54:20):
And our last outing on the field was not good enough,
not representative of who we were are defensively, offensively, just
it's not a good representation of our team entirely.

Speaker 12 (01:54:30):
So we gotta go out we gotta play better football.

Speaker 4 (01:54:34):
After the game, CJ mentioned that he was a little
bit he's been a little bit banged up. Is that's
just something that goes along with playing as much football
as he's played.

Speaker 20 (01:54:44):
The piece about CJ being banged up is, you know,
I think that's real, and that's real for everyone in
the league at this time of the year.

Speaker 12 (01:54:52):
Everybody is banged up.

Speaker 20 (01:54:53):
The comount of games, guys that played, the snaps that
they play like, everyone is banged up. That's that's what
it is. That's NFL football this time of year. You
try to manage it as best you can. And it's
also we all have to fight through, push through, and
a lot of guys are fighting through a lot of things,
not only CJ, but a lot of guys are fighting
through and that's the nature of what we do, and

(01:55:14):
that's it also shows how resilient these guys are, what
they go through and what they battle through that a
lot of people would never know that they're fighting to
go out there and see it'll go perform and ask
to perform at a high level.

Speaker 12 (01:55:28):
CJ said that's kept him from making some plays. Have
you seen that in his game?

Speaker 2 (01:55:33):
Of being banged up has kept him.

Speaker 20 (01:55:35):
Think CJ's had some plays that he would he would
like back. But again that's that's everyone right. Everyone has
had the plays that we would all like back and
would like to play better. I think CJ would be
the first to tell you, you know, he has to
play better, and our entire team, you know, rallying around
him and playing better as well. They collected me as
a team, we all have to play better, and we

(01:55:57):
have an outing like we did versus Baltimore. No one
and did good enough. Coaches, players, no one did good enough.
So we all, as I asked our guys to look
introspectively and see, you know, where we can all get better.

Speaker 21 (01:56:10):
We feel like that weapon after having just a few
days to kind of reflect on it, Why did you
feel like that.

Speaker 1 (01:56:16):
Was that you didn't play your best game.

Speaker 20 (01:56:18):
Yeah, we just didn't when the ball was snapped, we
weren't good like it wasn't.

Speaker 12 (01:56:21):
We didn't make plays.

Speaker 10 (01:56:22):
We didn't we.

Speaker 20 (01:56:23):
Didn't execute properly, like our eyes weren't in the right place.
We didn't fit things the right way. It's just it
was not a it was a poor album by everyone.

Speaker 12 (01:56:34):
Fresh starts with any player.

Speaker 14 (01:56:36):
What do you see from Deontay Johnson, your conversations with him,
and just what do you think he has a player?

Speaker 12 (01:56:42):
What do you hope from him on and.

Speaker 9 (01:56:43):
Off the field.

Speaker 20 (01:56:44):
Well, Deontay adding them to our teams, a guy who
has talent, He's done it, you know, at a high
level for other teams.

Speaker 12 (01:56:52):
Just bounced around a little.

Speaker 20 (01:56:53):
Bit here, and as I mentioned to him, uh if
of course, it's a clean slave starting with me. It
really doesn't matter what's happened in the past or what
the narrative is about you. You come here and everything
is a fresh start, and so we'll see how he
can help us, what he can add to our team,
you know, on the field and off the field.

Speaker 2 (01:57:12):
Can you talk about what you expect and then you
want to see your team play better this week? How
important is it to not just play better, but to
have some momentums you get ready because you are going
to postseason.

Speaker 11 (01:57:22):
What do you what kinds of things do you want
to see this weekend?

Speaker 20 (01:57:24):
Yeah, I want to see our guys go out and
just gain that confidence just from doing doing ball the
right way, and then you gain confidence by there. You
want to have that confidence. You want to be playing
your best ball at this point of the year. So
that's what I want our guys to feel. You know,
we're Tennessee's a tough matchup again, they got us here
earlier in the year. Really tough matchup for us, so

(01:57:47):
we know we have to play our best ball versus
them divisional opponent. It's always tough matchup and so we
have our work cutout for us. I want to see
our guys go out and just play the right way
and gain some confidence one into the postseason.

Speaker 22 (01:58:02):
From you know, having your guys playing week a team
knowing that you guys are in the playoffs. Locked in
kind of balance of wanting to get rhythm of balls,
worried about potentially injuries exact that you're trying to keep
guys as fresh as possible going into walk Car we can.

Speaker 12 (01:58:16):
Yeah, there is a balance there for us right now.

Speaker 20 (01:58:19):
I think it's a feel for where your team is
at this point of the season, and for me right now,
you know our team needs to be playing better as
before we get head into the postseason, so you know,
we'll see where we are and how the game goes,
and of course be smart about what we're doing and
be intentional about everything that we're doing, knowing what we

(01:58:40):
have ahead of us.

Speaker 12 (01:58:41):
But I still want our guys to go out and
play a good football.

Speaker 5 (01:58:46):
Else.

Speaker 2 (01:58:47):
All right, thank you coach, Thank you coach for being
smart about this, playing your players. What do you want
to say if we played like ass against Baltimore and
I'm not gonna to be the last thing we do
before the playoffs? Pretty much what he said, Yeah, made
so many words. He didn't say asked, but he wanted
to say. Ask. You probably told people we played like ass.
That is not a representation of who we are as

(01:59:08):
a team. That's good, excellent, excellent, excellent press availability with
the answers. Didn't commit to four quarters. I wouldn't expect
even if the team gets there, be loses twenty one
to three. I wouldn't expect four quarters, but they're gonna
they need some reps. They need to do something to
prove that they can actually move down the football field

(01:59:30):
against the NFL defense, which begs the question, Matt, don't
you shouldn't beg a question?

Speaker 3 (01:59:34):
Texans over nine and a half, how are we feeling?

Speaker 15 (01:59:39):
You know?

Speaker 2 (01:59:39):
I feel it feels like you got a fitty fitty shot.
It's a coin flip. Really, I mean, Davis Mills come
in and dominate money Mills.

Speaker 3 (01:59:47):
We also throw two pick sixes.

Speaker 2 (01:59:48):
He also could do that, yes, he could.

Speaker 6 (01:59:55):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:59:56):
The bat I had was if it's ten, it's ralt rass,
and it was a eleven, it was gonna be Rowton's.

Speaker 3 (02:00:02):
So Rowton's no longer in play? No, I thought, under,
was it Wharton's for you? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:00:07):
But I mean I was fully expecting to pay out
this year like I did last year. Now you're alive,
I have a puncher's chance. Titan's minus three is the
line right now? Etce Ooh that feels creepy. Can I
tell you this? If I was a betting man on football,
I would stay away from all.

Speaker 3 (02:00:27):
These games a week eighteen. It's a stay away.

Speaker 2 (02:00:29):
Well, I mean unless games really matter, like Minnesota Detroit's interesting. Yeah,
that's one seed is on the line. Uh, that's going
to be a big game. What else would be of interest?
I'm trying to let me look at the schedule. We're quick,
Like right now Cleveland Steelers Bengals, Steelers Bengles is interesting.
That's on a Saturday right now. The Browns are an
eighteen point dog to Baltimore.

Speaker 3 (02:00:51):
Excuse me.

Speaker 2 (02:00:55):
Eighteen? Uh yeah, Falcons are eight and a half point
favorites at home against Carolina. Tampa Bay's a fourteen point
favorite against New Orleans. I'm trying what else I can see?
I hear that's just a huge discrepancy. Green Bay's a
nine point favorite at home to Chicago. Uh. Where's that

(02:01:18):
Baltimore game? At make sure I get that right?

Speaker 9 (02:01:21):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (02:01:21):
Yeah, eighteen points. That's the first game on Saturday. Why
are you putting that on?

Speaker 4 (02:01:24):
That boy?

Speaker 5 (02:01:25):
Up?

Speaker 3 (02:01:25):
That boy out there.

Speaker 2 (02:01:28):
Baltimore is an eighteen point favorite at home against Cleveland.
They may win the game, they need to win the game,
but are they gonna really beat him by three touchdowns?
Go ahead by stay away, pony up to the Dayway
twelve forty seven biggest Dorian Thompson Robinson fan in the
Stay Away, Stay Far Away seven one three two one

(02:01:50):
two five seven Natti seven one three two one two
five seven Nati.

Speaker 7 (02:01:54):
It's Matt and he's back the Matt Thomas Show Bunch
seven ninety Home.

Speaker 1 (02:02:01):
For Houston teams.

Speaker 2 (02:02:06):
All right, we have one hour left to go, we
believe it or not, in forty to fifty eight minutes
from now. Biggest sports positive story of the year for
Houston and biggest negative. We're continuing kind of our theme
on the show today. Okay, well, at one o'clock we
will go through the list of candidate's more so on

(02:02:26):
the positive side of the negative stuff, it's frankly dominated
by astro stuff. Had they been the most turbulent team
in the market the last twelve months, the negative would
be the I mean, we can go with Texans loss
to the to the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs, or
were the Texans lost literally a few days ago or
the Ravens, or I mean, think about they're five and
three at home this year. Their last two games were

(02:02:48):
two of their three losses came to Tennessee, which never
should have lost to period and then a drumming by
Baltimore thirty one to two.

Speaker 3 (02:02:58):
Not a score of.

Speaker 2 (02:02:58):
Gommie actually no, a first half score gam but not
a score the third time it had happened, the first
time since nineteen sixty five, I think. And then we
had the next night, we had a six to three
game between the Seahawks and the Chicago Bears. Yes, and
then they looked through the archives. I think earlier this
year there was a Mariner's Cubs. Was a Mariner's cubs.
It was a Sarrion's white Sox, White Sox. Okay, yeah,

(02:03:21):
poor Alm Michaels, he's signing up for it. He signed
up for another year. If you're Al Michaels, do you
just not even look at the notes until, like you
get to get to that city today of the game,
it seems like he's knowledgeable. He's just it's not energetic.
It's not a good call to me. See you remember

(02:03:41):
when he had his A game, right, I think, yeah,
I mean probably well to me was it was the
last time he had his A game nineteen eighty six. No, no, no, no, no,
he's I was at the last five years haven't been
his best obviously, between seventy five and eighty probably not yeah,
but Rossie from about nineteen, I don't know, eighty to

(02:04:04):
two thousand, fifteen seventeen. That's about thirty seven years of
being probably the most accomplished strictly play by a play
guy best in the game, from doing Olympic stuff to
the NFL, to doing the World Series, to doing.

Speaker 3 (02:04:23):
The NBA for a while.

Speaker 2 (02:04:25):
I mean, he did miracle on ice, he did he
called the World Series with the earthquake. I mean, he's
multiple Super Bowls, always one of the most highest paid,
compensated and broadcasters out there. I mean he has had
when he was on, and he was on for long,
longer than a lot of other guys are on on spectacular,

(02:04:48):
So that begs the question thirty I would say thirty
five years of sustained excellence. Trying to give you another
begs the question.

Speaker 3 (02:04:55):
Matt, oh, hey, when you beg a question, go ahead,
greatest of all time.

Speaker 2 (02:05:01):
If you're gonna go multi sport, he probably is. Okay,
I'm deferring to you. The you are the the broadcasting,
the guru is what I was gonna go with. Now,
there are candidates, there are other people that have done
multiple sports. Vince Scully. Uh, did NFL for a long time, yes,
but obviously no more as a baseball announcer. Mike t

(02:05:26):
Rico is probably the closest thing to Al Michaels now,
and Mike Rico does multiple sports and crushes all those.
Iin Eagle, Kevin Harlan, I mean, if you're gonna go
single sport, Mike Breen, I think still is excellent doing
the NBA. Yeah, but yeah, it's the last five have

(02:05:48):
not treated Al very well. But for four decades, if
there was a big event to be called, al Michaels
was your first round pick. And now he's passed his
and now on Amazon, he's on Amazon Prime working year
to year. Amazon passed his Prime. That's right. Seven one
three two one two five seven outy seven one three

(02:06:09):
two one two five seven nine zero. Uh, anything else
going on, We've felt like anything we've mixed missed so far.
We got the highlights and low lights of Houston sports.
You mentioned the Ward cam Ward situation was very intriguing.
How do you think, generally speaking, America feels about are
they more disappointed or issue or realism movie? I think

(02:06:29):
now that it's coming out that it was pre previously discussed,
and when it first happened, everybody, and not everybody, but
I would say seventy five percent of people were upset.

Speaker 3 (02:06:35):
But now there's no way in the world.

Speaker 2 (02:06:37):
Cam's like, man, we're up at halftime, gre Grade, I'm
putting my helmet downs. Got this.

Speaker 3 (02:06:41):
They had this predetermined. There's I have no question about that.

Speaker 2 (02:06:46):
So I would say most everybody's okay with it now
that there was previously discussed. He was, there was some
touchdown record. He was going for. A and M did
not look good in the second half of their game.
They lost, No, they opted out of their second half
of their game. Mike Elko was unafraid to tell everybody
what he needed. A lot of four This is gonna

(02:07:07):
shock you, man, A lot of longhorns making fun of
Aggie's popping up in my four you tab posting the
quotes of alco calling calling A and M the flagship program.

Speaker 3 (02:07:16):
Of the state.

Speaker 2 (02:07:17):
Lucci, I expect a high scoring game and an Aggie win. Yes,
he's also got. He's also gargling too, a lot of
gargling that's worked very well for him.

Speaker 3 (02:07:29):
He's done well on that. You want to give up
all self respect and just do that. That's good.

Speaker 2 (02:07:37):
Wishing him the best.

Speaker 3 (02:07:38):
I got no ill will towards Billie.

Speaker 2 (02:07:39):
If you walked if there are five guys that walked
in here, I wouldn't know what he looked like. I
noticed sweets though, always pro aggy. I was Chip Brown,
Ship Brown doing his bit in August Austin.

Speaker 3 (02:07:52):
I don't know. I mean that was the pipeline for him,
and Mac was there.

Speaker 2 (02:07:55):
I don't know. It's been nearly as prevalent the last year.
Brown and Jeff catch him in the boys. Ye, I
guess he's still working.

Speaker 3 (02:08:05):
You know those those kind of they're not even journalism.
Uh oh.

Speaker 2 (02:08:10):
His latest tweet is the kicker Bert Auburn wants to
come back to Texas next season.

Speaker 3 (02:08:14):
He does.

Speaker 2 (02:08:14):
Oh you're disappointed about that, Burt Auburn. He had a
great He was great last year, but not this year.
You missed Cameron Dicker, don't you? Oh, wouldn't you Dick?
Or the kicker was spectacular. How about that little not
drop field goal? What did you do? The uh dropkick?

Speaker 4 (02:08:29):
That?

Speaker 3 (02:08:30):
No, it was in the in the pros last week.
Kick the free kick?

Speaker 2 (02:08:33):
Yeah, I didn't see it.

Speaker 3 (02:08:35):
Good too.

Speaker 2 (02:08:36):
I'll take your word for it. It helped them win.
I was out of town. You're always out of town
twelve fifty eight, The best sports moment of the year
in Houston. The worst we have been out of side
it Next on Sports Talk seven.

Speaker 1 (02:08:50):
Ninety lunchtimers, this is the Matt Thomas Show.

Speaker 2 (02:08:57):
What O three on Sports Talk seven ninety It is
the final hour of the Mount of Thomas Show with Ross.

Speaker 3 (02:09:02):
We are very happy to have you with us. Uh
seven one.

Speaker 2 (02:09:05):
Three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven nine zero. Our theme of
the show today we did not do to tell the
truth was. We wanted to keep it a central theme.
By the way, we will announce up probably tonight. I
believe I have got three finals for the d of
the YR. I try to go for four, okay, but
you and I will have you and I will actually

(02:09:26):
have to go through some group texting here because I'm
just in case I'm forgetting somebody, all right, Connor, you'll
be involved with it as well. Why don't we take
nominees at sports MT right now, Let's let's suit it
off air. That's what's at sports MT. Okay, So if
you I, I know who's going to win, and even
a certain segment of the population who is taking advantage

(02:09:48):
of this. I don't I don't want to give a
Tyler hero. No ref racing, no, oh ref rassen. Let's
go to ref rassin for a second. By the way,
where is that like three hours? I'm a terrible teaser. Well,
by the way, we have Houston sports moment of the year.
If you've got one for us, let us know seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven eighty the best moment

(02:10:10):
of the year in sports. Worst moment of the year
in sports. It has to involve a Houston team, either
pro or college. The Bright Spots are Al two by
signing a lifetime contract, Renel Blanco's no hitter, The Rocket's
finally beating the Golden State Warriors. Texans beaten the Bills,
Texans beating the Browns in a wild card. Those are
the five that have been the most prevalently talked to. Okay,

(02:10:31):
cam I forgetting anything else that sounds about right. The
negatives Astros trading Kyle Tucker, Astros loosing the Tigers in
the wildcard too straight, The Astros releasing Jose bray you,
the Astros having to release uh Rafael Montero.

Speaker 9 (02:10:45):
And the.

Speaker 2 (02:10:47):
Jamal shed ankle turning. Somebody said, Biscuit said, oh, U
of H's injuries, I would put that in collectively. There
injuries in this in the tournament tough. I'm being hoscious.
I'm being totally selfish. I want them to go to
the final four this year. They're gonna be good enough,
true squad, but I but I I feel like this
is the heyday of the resurgence, and I don't want

(02:11:10):
to say, well, it was cool going one time, and
that was during COVID when I was in Indianapolis with
four thousand people with mask on. Yeah, and you were
hanging out with uh, what's his name, the lawyer, Yeah,
Rusty Harden. We had some bruskies together.

Speaker 3 (02:11:23):
That's great. And then they lost.

Speaker 2 (02:11:25):
No, we we drank because they lost. Okay, they were
down like thirty to a half. It wasn't any fun.
I thought that was the Oh it was the buzz
was a few years ago. Yeah that was before Yeah, okay,
all right, so douchebag Jeff passing and I couldn't excuse me,
I'm sorry, that's not true. That's not nice.

Speaker 3 (02:11:41):
It's not no.

Speaker 2 (02:11:44):
He puts this tweet out two days ago, got five
point eight million views. Okay, give me to read it
in Jeff Passing voice for you. Uh yeah, please do.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are a machine. Not only do
they print cash, their willingness to spend in and in
pursuit of winning is unmatched. They put their money where
their mouth is. Others could benefit greatly from the same

(02:12:06):
approach they choose not to.

Speaker 3 (02:12:09):
He is a D of the Week. We don't do
D of the weeks, but he'd be a D of
the week for that.

Speaker 2 (02:12:13):
And then there was a response, others don't put contracts
on layaway, Jeff, and this is now that was a
water carrying tweet in itself first from Jeff Passing, but
this just took it to another level. Bobby Bonilla, Ken
Griffy Junior, Francisco Lindor, Max Scherzer, Steven Strasburg, Christian Yelich,
and plenty of others deferred money. Arizona's ownership needed to
sell in two thousand and four because it deferred too much,

(02:12:35):
which is a point against what you're talking about, what
the Dodgers are doing.

Speaker 3 (02:12:40):
Before you complain, understand history a little.

Speaker 2 (02:12:43):
It's not hard. He's just we don't have a Wednesday show.

Speaker 23 (02:12:49):
No shut well, we're gonna save. Jeff pass is just
a d bat sh je pass and terrible thing to say.
And I'm sorry if my kids are listen, fine, he's
just a dude. I should infinited Jeff Passon. This is indefensible.

Speaker 2 (02:13:03):
This is completely disingenuous mentioning the one offs of Bobby Bonia, King,
Griffy Junior, Lindor blah blah blah blah. That is not
talking about the stockpile of deferred money put away by
the Los Angeles Dodgers. So, and he's a smart person.
That's the thing. When a smart person says something dumb,
you know you're being lied to. Jeff Passing is lying
to people and covering up for the Dodgers with this.

(02:13:24):
So the Dodgers make more money off their regional television
network than anybody else does in baseball. It adn't even
close correct it is And I want to google this,
so I don't give you erroneous information. Okay, The Dodgers
television deal per year pays the Dodgers three hundred and

(02:13:47):
thirty four million dollars. So the first my god, so
the first tweets it was a twenty five year deal
worth eight billion dollars for Time Warner other Communications to
create this network. Okay, So what I did is I said, hey,
when major League based, when the Dodgers want to share

(02:14:09):
their money, their television money with everybody else, then this
can have valid And I said, until then, shut your
ballb mass up. Then I did a little bit of
research to see if indeed everybody keeps to keep every
bit of their television dollars. They get to keep fifty
two percent of their money. The forty eight is put
into a pool that has shared equally among the thirty teams.

(02:14:29):
It also includes a national television deal. The national TV
deal is worth ninety million dollars per year per team.
Per team, they get three thirty four from their local team. Wow,
now they still get to keep fifty two million of
three hundred and thirty four million dollars. My math would
tell me what that's gonna be about one seventy give

(02:14:51):
or take. Do you realize I'm going to run through
the list for you San Diego, Colorado next year, Texas
next year.

Speaker 3 (02:15:00):
In Minnesota.

Speaker 2 (02:15:03):
There's got to be probably at least five or six
others that Major League Baseball is gonna be running their
TV networks and getting no rights fees or or pennies
and a dollar. The Houston Astros used to get money
from AT and T, Yes they get don't get that
money anymore.

Speaker 3 (02:15:20):
They said, we're giving it up.

Speaker 2 (02:15:21):
Here's our equipment, here's your network, here's your distribution deal
with Drag TV, Space City Home Network. It's you, it's
your Just take it, just take it right. So pennies
on an hour, I don't know what that is. Tilman's
not giving me the numbers. Gym's not giving me the numbers.
Don't expect them to. But the Los Angeles Dodgers have
a deal that's even richer than the Yankees deal with

(02:15:43):
YES and their home network. Bottom line is this, the
television deals are the greatest form of discrepancy in professional
sports when it comes to compensation, and until that becomes equal,
like everybody everybody else is in the end the NFL,
there will be the haves and have nots. So this

(02:16:03):
ridiculous notion that Jeff Passing says that the anchors the
Dodger's doing.

Speaker 3 (02:16:07):
It the right way right.

Speaker 2 (02:16:08):
The reason why the Dodge's doing it the right way
is because they've got a minimum two hundred million dollars
coming back to them more than anybody else does from
their television deal. They put their money where their mouth is.
Others could benefit greatly from the same approach they choose
not to. That's just it's he's gas lighting his own,
his own followers in fan base of the of the

(02:16:29):
sporty covers.

Speaker 3 (02:16:29):
It's it's like he owes somebody something over there. Now,
when you're a.

Speaker 2 (02:16:35):
Big, powerful reporter who breaks a lot of stories, these
types of things are the things you're gonna have to do.
This is part of the game. But I'm still disappointed
in Jeff passing with this. This is this is this
is beneath him in my opinion. Others would say, no,
it's not, and he's been like this for years, but man,
this is this is a water carrying to a level
I had not seen before. It's ridiculous and it compromises

(02:16:59):
his credibility.

Speaker 3 (02:17:01):
Absolutely can't argue with that.

Speaker 2 (02:17:06):
And when you put out information like that in order
to try to treat it as fact, then it questions.
Any time I see anything he tweets out of what
agenda's associated with. Yeah, and pulling out the Bobby Bony
and King Griffith. Those are like two contracts from thirty
and forty years ago we're talking about. You can line
them up with what the Dodgers have right now. They

(02:17:26):
have like six seven guys deferring money. Yeah, it's not
the same. And Jeff Passen knows that that's what's the
most disappointing.

Speaker 3 (02:17:34):
But he know what he does. He wears medium suits.

Speaker 2 (02:17:36):
Yes he does. He breaks news. He hadn't gotten said
off by ESPN. And thank god, and I mean this
in all sincerity, ESPN, thank you for choosing Shams over
him for your NBA beat Because to have to see Jeff.

Speaker 3 (02:17:49):
Passing an NBA arena, what it made me vomit.

Speaker 2 (02:17:51):
That feels like a leverage play, like a leaked leverage
play to me, that could have happened, could have been
for sure, by the way, friend of the show, I
won't mention his name to to respect his privacy. Best
move in Houston sports this year, Rice firing Mike Woongren
as our football coach. Hmm, I didn't have that on
my top ten list. I can only think of one.

(02:18:12):
Rice Hawk in the city. I don't think you know
this person. Okay, but is it Alance Berkman. It's not
Lanz Berkman. No, no, no, all right? Uh one point
thirteen on Sports Talk seven, What a Rando one? I
loved it, but it is very Rando Enrique Cruz No, Sonny, No,
you don't know this person.

Speaker 3 (02:18:31):
Stop guessing. And if you didn't know this person, I
wouldn't tell you.

Speaker 2 (02:18:35):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety The best
sports move in Houston, Moment in Houston sports in twenty
twenty four in the worst let us know it's the
Matt Thomas should Ross.

Speaker 3 (02:18:47):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (02:18:49):
Matten Ross return return on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (02:19:04):
For fitting uh bidding a farewell to Thomas Sports Enterprise
candidate not candidate client Will Levis this week he's gonna
play And don't write him off.

Speaker 3 (02:19:19):
Now you know what.

Speaker 2 (02:19:20):
I've been with him for two years. Hey, people wrote
off Gino Smith. Oh how about Sam Donald? People wrote
that was what was the gun? In the next one?
I was gonna go to Sam Donald was written off.
Baker Mayfield was written off. You're so you think that
Thomas Sports Enterprise to remain bullish on him.

Speaker 3 (02:19:34):
Stand by your man, Matt.

Speaker 2 (02:19:38):
Maybe you need to renegotiate the contract. Yeah, a little
or maybe a higher percentage for give him a little
more realistic thresholds like turn them ball over once cut
bait and he has a resurgence, you're not allowed to
claim credit.

Speaker 3 (02:19:51):
You know what, I'll stay with him. There you go.

Speaker 2 (02:19:54):
I'm gonna give you some quarterbacks that have been very iffy.
You know what, j Shroud, Here we go, long long
term future, next three.

Speaker 3 (02:20:04):
Years, next three years. Fire.

Speaker 2 (02:20:06):
So kirk Cousins, what's he doing in the next three years?
I mean not three years from now, in the next
three year. It's going to cost him so much to
cut bait on him. Cap Wa Penix was I don't think.
I can't believe how much I enjoyed Atlanta washingt when
I got home from the Rockets lest night. It was
a really good game. Yes, it was really really good overtime. Ye,

(02:20:28):
next three years, Kirk Cousins be a backup somewhere in
three years, or what happens, He'll be the backup in
Atlanta next year and then they'll cut him and then
he'll be he'll be a backup somewhere else, Sam Darnold.

Speaker 3 (02:20:46):
Next three years, he's.

Speaker 2 (02:20:48):
Going to get a big contract from somebody, and then
he's going to be just a guy. Wait a minute,
he's not leaving Minnesota, He's not. Nope, they got JJ McCarthy.
They're gonna franchise tag him. You think that at worst
case that's gonna cost at a pretty penny. They're forty,
they're fifteen and one. That's true. You're gonna tell, You're
gonna tell a fifteen to one quarterback, see you? All right,

(02:21:10):
he's gonna you know what, you're probably right. Okay, he
stays for one year in Minnesota, and he's not that great,
he's not as good. He's don't have a year like
he did this year. How about that? Now, if he
gets franchise tag, it's a one year deal. It's worth
probably north of forty million, probably, I mean, there are
better fallbacks than that projected franchise tender for quarterback forty

(02:21:35):
one million dollars. Forty one million dollars for one year.
All right, let's continue. Weill loves the next three years,
he's a.

Speaker 3 (02:21:45):
Backup somewhere.

Speaker 2 (02:21:48):
And then you know, what he could be a backup
for years.

Speaker 3 (02:21:52):
He's a backup in three years. Anthony Richardson.

Speaker 2 (02:21:54):
Ooh, now, I don't know if you recall this man,
but I put my name on the start of the season.
I wasn't buying the Anthony Richardson hype and I also
put my name on it. C De Shrowd will always
be considered a better quarterback than Anthony richards.

Speaker 3 (02:22:07):
That seems okay.

Speaker 2 (02:22:08):
People were calling for the Remember people were remember the
hot pick for the for the AFC South was the
was the Colts because of the fact that he when
he threw before he got hurt last year, he did
a lot of his damage against the Texan secondary. Anthony
Richardson over the next three years. I'm not gonna say
out of the league, but close you that's the worst

(02:22:32):
indictment you've given. You didn't even say backup. You said
out of the league. He can't make five yard throws
and he gets hurt all the time, and he's been
benched twice this year, hasn't.

Speaker 3 (02:22:41):
He He didn't he was hurt yesterday. No, he's hurt.

Speaker 2 (02:22:44):
Yeah, but he's also been benched, went healthy and took
a playoff because he was tired. Remember, yeah, I mean
I said Will Levis is almost out of the league. Okay,
how about this one short, let's dumb it down. Backup
Anthony richards just a backup Anthony Richson er will us
equal careers?

Speaker 3 (02:23:01):
Or who has a better one of the two?

Speaker 2 (02:23:03):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (02:23:04):
I mean it's it's picking between liver and onions, right.

Speaker 2 (02:23:11):
You know what I didn't think of that was bad
that I tried in Taiwan, Kidney never had it.

Speaker 3 (02:23:15):
It was actually pretty good. I've had liver and onions.
I love onions.

Speaker 2 (02:23:18):
The spy's liver. That's in the different issue a different time. Okay, Next,
I didn't answer your question better. Who's doing better in
their career the next three years? Neither? Okay, they both
have accuracy issues. I'll go with Richardson. I don't know.
I would think so because he's gonna be given a

(02:23:38):
better chance to start, because there's value in him high
first round pick already. They've got to give him one
more shot at least.

Speaker 9 (02:23:49):
C J.

Speaker 2 (02:23:49):
Stroud.

Speaker 1 (02:23:50):
C J.

Speaker 2 (02:23:51):
Stroud is a perennial Pro bowler in three years. That's
not all pro though, all pro is, I mean top
two Pro Bowl is. Pro Bowl's difficult seventh best quarterback
in the NFL all pro is you're better than Lamar Jackson,
better than Josh Allen, better than Pat Mahomes. No, I'll
say Pro Bowl like deserve it, Pro Bowl, not injury

(02:24:14):
replacement selected to the Pro Bowl.

Speaker 3 (02:24:16):
We need to start changing that conversation.

Speaker 2 (02:24:18):
By the way, there's a difference between being the Pro
Bowler and being selected to the Pro Bowl, because there's
not because guys go to the Pro Bowl or selected
but don't go. And now it's a skills challenge because
people are talking about Eli Manning four time Pro Bowl
or I haven't looked through it, but I mean, how
many times is he actually selected to that Pro Bowl? Which,
by the way, we need to keep Eli Manning out
of the Hall of Fame. Loses all meaning I know,

(02:24:41):
I am and I'm in different because we we over
the years, we forget, we forget, we forget. We only
remember ring drink drink, drink, drink, drinks, drinks and NBT.
He never won an MVP. He won a Super Bowl MVP.
He was an NFL MVP. That's the only thing he
ever led the NFL and was interceptions and he did
that three times once seventeen and one to seventeen as
a starter, three time interception leader. There was never a

(02:25:04):
time where he was considered the top five quarterback in football.
Maybe top ten fringe in that conversation. But we are
just for forgetting collectively as a society, how mid Eli
Manning was. It's supposed to be a room of the
all time, all time grades.

Speaker 9 (02:25:26):
For a time.

Speaker 3 (02:25:26):
It is great.

Speaker 2 (02:25:27):
No, he wasn't even great.

Speaker 12 (02:25:28):
He was good.

Speaker 2 (02:25:29):
I think when you when you are great on two
Super Bowl Sundays, it means he scored twenty one points
in seventeen points in those Super Bowls. It's not like
he was lightning. He didn't throw three hundred yards in
either of those Super Bowls. But but he helped them win. Yes,
but odd team. But let me finish morgument. He's helping
me describe what a great performance. Two great performances are.
Two great performances don't get you in the profo ball
like two great throws. Really yeah, I would, I would

(02:25:50):
not put him in either. But I think you're I
think maybe the New York bias is helping him.

Speaker 3 (02:25:55):
People we're going to put him in there.

Speaker 2 (02:25:56):
And also because we remember things greater than they were
Eli Manning because all they remember is the Super Bowls
and then everything else kind of falls off the I
don't know, the other leaves shake off of that tree
and all this left of the Super Bowl rings that
to everybody else remembers. But Eli Manning was never really
thought of as one of the best quarterbacks in football. Okay,
I'm gonna give you an interesting one here, Jane Daniels. Okay,

(02:26:19):
is he closer to Pat Mahomes the next three years?

Speaker 5 (02:26:22):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (02:26:22):
I don't think or RG three? Oh, come on, he's
gonna be better than RG three. I'm a buyer in
Jayden Daniels.

Speaker 3 (02:26:33):
Hmm, I got news for you.

Speaker 2 (02:26:34):
There is a very small club of the super late
quarterbacks in the NFL. It's Alan, it's Jamar Jackson, and
it's Mahomes. In the next three years, are we going
to put Jayde Daniels in that group of now make
it four? Do you know what he's done to that team?

(02:26:55):
He's been great. He has been He's smart, he throws
a beautiful ball, he's runs, he's everything that I think
the Colts thought Anthony Richson was going to be. Frankly,
I will say, hm, who's faster to that. Don't know
who's who's okay? You know how, there's the four horsemen, right,

(02:27:17):
you get through the four horsemen, who takes the fourth
spot faster?

Speaker 3 (02:27:22):
Or Jane Danizkers, Red Ross, j Stroud.

Speaker 2 (02:27:26):
He's gonna turn it around. They're gonna fix this offensive line.
You are smirking like you wouldn't believe they're gonna draft
a wide receiver. Nico Collins can't do it all by himself.
Do you remember I had two quarterbacks this year and
this year's draft being awesome. Jane Daniels was one of them.

Speaker 5 (02:27:48):
M hmm.

Speaker 3 (02:27:49):
And I thought that Caleb Williams are gonna be the other. Well,
the one and.

Speaker 2 (02:27:54):
Two picks, Drake May has been good. That's another one
you can throw at me. I don't know about he's got.
He needs so much around him. He's had some concussion
issues as well. And j McCarthy gonna be in three
years quarterback in the Vikings, I will say in fourth place,
I would say I would have said that, but when
the when it happened, and now that we've got some

(02:28:15):
Drake May has been.

Speaker 3 (02:28:15):
Okay or two and nine?

Speaker 2 (02:28:17):
Two and nine is a starter, fifteen touchdowns, ten picks
typical rookie. Yeah, it's not a bad probably a better upside,
and they probably thought he.

Speaker 3 (02:28:24):
Was gonna Shunk's really been coming along.

Speaker 2 (02:28:27):
We're not ready to turn that corner yet, but his
numbers are significantly better after his benching. I think we
have we as a an NFL consuming we got really
quick on he sucks so bad. We give up on
quarterbacks too fast. Baker Mayfield. Sam Darnold said, of the
names we were running through earlier, perfect. Yeah, Baker Mayfield
has got zero problems with people giving up on him
because now he's got scoreboard HM and the Buccaneers are

(02:28:49):
one victory away from winning another AFS NFC South. Five
touchdowns for Baker Mayfield against the Panthers. Yeah, that's what
it is, all right, final segment before we get to
believe it or not.

Speaker 3 (02:28:59):
If you chime in, we'd love to hear from you.

Speaker 2 (02:29:01):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two, one two, five seven nine zero. It
is the Matt Thomas Show. This with Ross is Sports
Talk seven ninety ride.

Speaker 17 (02:29:15):
Half the workday is done. Celebrate with Matt Hey, Matte
Love Schell. By the sound of it, some of you
started the party at breakfast. Matt Thomas on Sports Talk
seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (02:29:35):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety if
you'd like to be a part of our radio program
seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
The Jets are looking for candidates Rex Ryan and Ron
Rivera to take the Jets job. What a toxic, horrific
situation you see. Aaron Rodgers pulled himself in the game yesterday. No,

(02:29:56):
I didn't see that down. I think thirty three nothing
and he said, I'm good. I thought that they. I
thought he and DeVante Adams wanted to get his five
hundred touchdown or whatever didn't happen. Whatever, Thanks for nothing, Aaron.
I'm not an Aaron Rodgers guy, but I still think

(02:30:17):
he's one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Speaker 3 (02:30:18):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (02:30:19):
To see his diminishing returns off of this career he's
had as a jutt apualitan, he's just nuts.

Speaker 3 (02:30:25):
He's forty one years old.

Speaker 2 (02:30:28):
What do you expect more than when he gave us
He's coming off in an achilles injury as well. Yeah,
but his magical holistic healing didn't get him back in
the game like many thought last year. So he throws
an interception and then he gets called for a late
hit out of bounds.

Speaker 3 (02:30:44):
After that, of fishers like who had eight eight Rogers eight?

Speaker 7 (02:30:49):
No?

Speaker 2 (02:30:50):
They eight on defense? No, there's only one eight twenty
four touchdowns, ten picks, four and twelve. Record not great.

Speaker 3 (02:30:59):
I mean, I think he's got something left in the tank.

Speaker 2 (02:31:02):
Nah, they hang him up. Well, I guess he needs
to get one more touchdowns he plays. There's just not
a great quarterback class. Right, it's Shadoor Sanders and that's
about it. Well, no, it's the kid at Miami Ward
cam Wore Sam Arden Shador Sanders, I think. And then
there's the the draft Knicks say there is a drop
off after those two significant as the kids would say,
we got Detroit and San Francisco tonight a month. Quinn

(02:31:24):
yours is ready to go. Get Quinn out there. Please?
Were you displeased with his performance against them?

Speaker 3 (02:31:32):
I know, I like Quinn.

Speaker 2 (02:31:35):
Do you need our love? Do you need Arch Manning
to play at all for your squad to go win the.

Speaker 3 (02:31:40):
National champions Yeah? Put him in the red zone. I'm
down with red zone.

Speaker 14 (02:31:44):
Arch.

Speaker 2 (02:31:45):
Isn't it crazy how you would have a Manning like
Grandpa was to scrambler because he had to because he
was running for his life. He scrambler though Eli very rarely,
and Peyton had to do it because he was running
for his life. But other than that, they would never
try to run for ever, try to scram now, it's
crazy that Archie has got the best escapability. Well, you
know his father is the greatest athlete of the bunch.

Speaker 3 (02:32:06):
Cooper, It's true.

Speaker 2 (02:32:07):
People always talk about how great the funniest guy too. Well, yeah,
and I developed something right, It's like me. He's got
dad boy.

Speaker 3 (02:32:14):
It's like the girls, the funniest in the group.

Speaker 2 (02:32:18):
Do you want to repeat that?

Speaker 9 (02:32:20):
No?

Speaker 2 (02:32:20):
I think that's something I would have said it did
you you're infecting my brain? Becauldn't say it one more time?
Here's too much say one more time. Generally, the funny
one in the girl group is the big one. Am
I wrong?

Speaker 10 (02:32:33):
No?

Speaker 2 (02:32:34):
No, that's actually not completely true. The big one usually
thinks she's smaller than everybody else, and she's a little
she's a little more arrogant.

Speaker 3 (02:32:42):
She can be. Never mind, you're getting me in trouble.

Speaker 2 (02:32:47):
Yes I am. And if we had more time, I
would further expound on this. But since we don't have
more time. You'll take it running a lot at the time.
Let's go have issue still, yeah, it says, my VPN
just drops so I can't even get to it. Let's
go to Branton in the Galleria at seven on the
Matt Thomas Show of Ross Brent, Good afternoon.

Speaker 24 (02:33:08):
Hello, Hey, gentlemen, thanks for taking my call, and happy New.

Speaker 3 (02:33:13):
Year to everybody.

Speaker 24 (02:33:16):
Absolutely thank you. Just a quick thing on the best
thing that I feel for Houston sports this year, John
Mitchee coming back from leukemia. I mean, talk about a
battle for life. And then the worst thing that I
feel was also involving the Texans Kang.

Speaker 12 (02:33:34):
Dell's leg injury.

Speaker 24 (02:33:36):
Uh just feel so bad for him, the year that
he's had with the injury prior being shot, and then this.
I'm still just blown away how when he blew his
leg out like that, how he still held on to
the ball the.

Speaker 16 (02:33:48):
Way he did.

Speaker 24 (02:33:48):
Just remarkable heart in that guy. And I just want
to say thoughts and prayers to everybody out there that
are struggling with addiction. And I hope you guys can
find some help and please reach out to You're their
support group of color about fighting the battle of addiction.

Speaker 10 (02:34:03):
I wish everybody happy New Year.

Speaker 3 (02:34:05):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (02:34:05):
Brent Wisely said, thank you very much. We forgot about really,
Frank the Tank Dell situation. There is a large part
of that says he's never coming back ever in his career. Really,
have you talked to like Orthopedis about this? Okay, No,
I think it's and it's it's. Look, we all have

(02:34:30):
your rational thoughts about variety of things like oh, we'll
never come back from this, or we lose a job,
We'll never have another job better than this, or you
lose a girlfriend. You say I never had a girlfriend
as good as this. This is just one of those
rando I mean, body was he five nine, one sixty

(02:34:52):
something like that. Everything that could possibly go wrong with
his knee is gonna went wrong.

Speaker 3 (02:34:58):
It's second straight year end injury. It could I mean,
I really.

Speaker 2 (02:35:03):
Forgetting out where he went to school. It's just as
a pure human being. Yeah, I want him to get
back on the foot. I mean, he survived a shooting
and then now he's got this potentially career ending or
career threatening injury. I mean the the doctor NFL doctors
that I kind of follow on Twitter for fantasy purposes.
Talking about this being similar to the Nick Chubb injury,

(02:35:23):
and Nick Chubb came back and he played in eight
games this year, but his career yards per attempt they're
five point one. Nick Chubb this year three point three.
And and part of him is his ability to break
off tackles for guys small stature, plus his speed. I
would assume that if you're off an NFL football field
for a year and a half, you're probably not gonna

(02:35:45):
have the same He's not a six foot four ballhawk.
He's gonna have to get open. He's gonna have to
get separation, which he's been great at cat. He does
that with his speed and his quickness. And if you
take away his speed and his quickness, he's not like
DeAndre Hopkins, who is just one of the you know,
the great fifty fifty.

Speaker 3 (02:36:00):
Winners or a planet. Yeah, he's gonna have to.

Speaker 2 (02:36:02):
He wins with his speed and his acceleration and his
route running, which is all a combination of why he's great,
and that could absolutely be threatened with this knee injury.
So I'm not I normally call you crazy man. I'm
not calling you crazy man. And I don't want to.
I don't want to be right. I hope that he's
got a great support staff around him. He's gonna get
the best doctor's care and modern sports science. You gotta

(02:36:25):
have a lot of it's gonna be motivation. It's gonna
be a lot of time in the in the rehabilitation center.
It's gonna be a lot of time on the machines.
It's gonna be a lot of watching and saying on
the sidelines. And it takes a special person. I consider
this a long ways with guys that get Tommy John surgery.
I mean you, in baseball, you can't have any more

(02:36:46):
of a serious injury in baseball if you're a pitcher
than Tommy John. It takes you about eighteen months, and
there's no guarantee you come all the way back.

Speaker 3 (02:36:55):
Now they're now technology.

Speaker 2 (02:36:56):
And the medicine and the science and the surgery has
made it the success right much greater than it was
when Tommy John was first being put out year decades ago.
But no one says you can fast track of Tommy John.
And no one says you can fast track complete dislocation
and rupturing of every cl that you can possibly find

(02:37:17):
in that knee. Yeah, there's a sports so he's a
it says Harvard trained sports surgeon went to Stanford as well.
He said average return fifteen months for the a CL, MCL,
LCL meniscus, dislocated kneecap, multiple surgeries, fifteen months average return.
So you're looking at two seasons. Young highly athletic players

(02:37:40):
tend to bounce back year two. Yeah, longevity and durability
taking major hits, and quickness at five nine, whatever his white,
whatever his height and weight is, Texan's got to go
get a receiver in the second round. First round O line. Okay,

(02:38:02):
normally you take a tackle in the first round. That's
what I'm saying. If you if you've independs, where can
you take a guard? At pick twenty three? They took
what it picked fifteen. His name was Kenyan Green. So
Nick Casario history wise, Yes, you can take a guard there.

(02:38:24):
That's the priority you've got to get. And I'm not
saying that CJ's mentally fraighted. I'm saying you've got to
build some confidence. And the number one thing you can
do to build a confidence after a disappointing season, a
less than a rookie season, is go to the draft
and go say CJ. We've got this guy out of
Bowling Green. We got this guy out of Ohio State.
We got this guy out of Penn State that we

(02:38:46):
think is going to be a great protector for you.
That's going to reassure him more than we got this
only really fast receiver. We're gonna throw all they want.
He's got to be good when he gets the field.
I know you can't take a guard first round and
he's he's a bust. That's what's happening right now, Kenny Green.
So Nick Cassio not only has to make the pick,
he has to get it right.

Speaker 3 (02:39:08):
Nick as over under three years here.

Speaker 2 (02:39:14):
Oh that's a good one. Actually, I will be.

Speaker 3 (02:39:20):
Optimistic and I will say over you don't ask me
for a confidence level.

Speaker 16 (02:39:28):
No, No, I'm not.

Speaker 2 (02:39:31):
I wouldn't. I wouldn't even accept the bet if you tried.
I'm not betting you at Nature's Valley Bar on this
salting crackers from the deli that you stole. I just
had somebody with maybe a little bit of a pulse
of the organization said just keep an eye on that

(02:39:52):
long term. All right. The results have to keep coming
because the expectation of the bar has been raised all right,
one four, let's play Believe or Not. We've got no
prizes today. We can give you a celebrity shout out.

Speaker 4 (02:40:06):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (02:40:06):
Connor and McGovern is the most famous Missouri lum. He's
playing his team is playing right now, Iowa in the
Music City Bowls, so he's probably checked out for the
rest of the show. This is true. All right, thank you,
good to hearing hear you. Uh, We're gonna do a
shoutouts say for Believe It or Not. The category is
all things about Jimmy Carter saying, Matt what is a
shout out? That's we give an opportunity to say hello
to anybody that you want to, whether it be your

(02:40:27):
best friend, whether it be an immortal enemy, whether it
be your girlfriend, whether it be your side piece, if
you would like to give a shout out for winning
Believe it or Not, because frankly, our entire sales apartment
and our promotion staff are taking the week off. They
took the last week off, and they've been basically off
since about November the fifteenth seven one three two one

Speaker 4 (02:40:52):
Next time tell Alexa playing seven ninety on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (02:40:57):
Wherever you are.

Speaker 2 (02:40:58):
So is Matt tom on Sports Talk seven ninety. If

a friend of mine. Friend of the show, cannot reveal
his identity. It says, the funny girl is the big
one of the group. Holy toledos, what you just That
person said your commentary sticks. By the way, you're called
a mid journalist this weekend, I was resentful of that. Ah,

(02:41:44):
you're a low level journalist. Your mid is too high.
You ate that I'm not even a journalist or a reporter. Yeah,
that's fine.

Speaker 4 (02:41:52):
That guy.

Speaker 2 (02:41:52):
I heard that guy's big on the Texans Twitter streets,
so I wish I'm wishing the best.

Speaker 3 (02:41:57):
He definitely bragged.

Speaker 2 (02:41:58):
It was he was he the one bragging of them
out or somebody about how great he was in Texans sweat.
I don't care, it's fine. You know, I'm wishing him
the best. He's muted and my've moved on.

Speaker 3 (02:42:08):
Was I called I was called a soft bitch, right.

Speaker 2 (02:42:10):
Everybody got upset. I made a simple statement of fact.
I said, there's people calling that conversation crossed my timeline
somehow in the for you tab or something. So my
tweet was people calling for Damiko Ryans and email you
Dooka to be fired this week. This place is something
else that absolutely, one hundred percent happened. People were like, no,
it's not you're rage baiting for clicks, for clicks. I
don't even pay for this stupid website. What does it

(02:42:32):
benefit me to get clicks? I don't care. And oh,
by the way, that guy had like one hundred thousand tweets,
I've got, like, I don't know, forty thousand tweets. So
if I'm the one that's rage baiting and attention seeking
and you've got a hundred thousand tweets and I've got
forty thousand, let's be honest. I have honest conversation. I
just loved that you were called a mid journalist, not
even a drug. That was the best part. Not a journalist.

(02:42:54):
But I am very mid irek admit I've been I've
been mid for a long time. It's fine. By the way,
I was a make a living doing this seven nothing

Speaker 3 (02:43:13):
If you give it, you must take it.

Speaker 2 (02:43:14):
That's correct. That's actually wonderful.

Speaker 3 (02:43:17):
So I'm going to take two sorry for your losses
in the last few days.

Speaker 2 (02:43:20):
Mmm. I like that. Yeah, that's that's the revenge served.

It or Not not? He did oh one win for
very Man alone. Oh wait, did you like Home Improvement
as a TV show? I liked it when I was
a kid, but I wasn't grown up. It doesn't hold up.

Speaker 4 (02:46:13):
It was mid.
