from the NFL for missing calls,they give you a win back or something.

okay, duly noted. But guesswhat that means. We're going to give

all over the things giving weekend,but he made something he makes things personal

does in the NFL do something likethat to where you review they judge them
every week everything, every single play. Hey, they get they get evaluated

every week they do. I don'tknow what the end result of an evaluation
is. At the end of theyear, you don't get a playoff assignment.
You don't get a Super Bowl assignment. I guess, when's the last
time you heard of an NFL refereebeing suspended or demoted for missing calls?

missing calls demoted? You don't right, they evaluate them and judge them.

I'm sure it affects them in thehouse, like, okay, well you
can't be a crew chief, youknow, the head referee, because well,
the last three years you're sitting ateighty percent. But with a the
rest have a union in the NFLare protected right they have to. I
know major League Baseball has that.I'm not sure. I'm assuming they do.
I'm pretty sure. So with thatin mind, it's like a Vegas

casino dealer. You know why thatyou walk into a Vegas casino. I'm
not saying, you know, somepeople say you got to skew younger in
business. Well, twenty five yearolds don't usually pay the bills the union.
By the way, there you go, twenty five year olds in business
don't usually pay the bills. Likesomebody, listen, it's usually I'm not
saying twenty five year olds owner money. But when it comes to like advertising.

It ain't coming out of a twentyfour year old that just walked off
a college campus's wallet, usually rightas they work their way up. But
with unions, you got the union. Like in Vegas Francis, you want
to be a blackjack, they gotunions to protect them. Why do you
think you walk into a bar?I'm not saying that old people, you
know what I think. I thinkwe need more wise old people than than

what is? What's what's this generationcalled the gen Z could learn from some
adios? Are we still in thegen Z? I don't. I can't

check dealer or bartender. Why wouldyou leave a job that makes you more

than a six figure manager job makingone hundred and twenty I trust me,
I know this for a fact.Yeah, you're walking away from one hundred
and fifty thousand bucks. Is abartender at a bar that has with tips
and the rest of it. Andyou say, well, why is that
person works still seventy in doing this? Why? Well, union protect you
can't walk. They don't even haveto lift a towel to wipe off a

counter if it's the bar backs jobdoes that? You get what I'm saying
here. So the union protects them, like all unions do. You protect
your guys, same thing here,And you wonder how come we don't fire
them because you protect We missed afew calls, that's what. They ain't
going anywhere until they retire. Sothe union, the union will protect them,
just like they're doing the NFL.So even though you're not going to
know for the most part, weekin and week out, what's told to

that side judge in a meeting,even though he may have missed three calls.
It a referee who's staring right ata quarterback getting hit in the face,
oh like we saw the other night. And and because job staring at
him, it doesn't do anything.Or the vice versus staring right at him,
guy brushes him with a shoulder andthrows a flag and calls it a
personal foul, roughing the passer andthe passer all he did was brush by

him, hit him with a shoulderon the shoulder the second the balls released.
So I can't keep up. Butyou want to know what, Yes,
they evaluate, evaluate him every time. But for them inside, I
want to be the head referee.Well you missed too much. But for
you, you the truth is ifI said name the sixteen head referees in
the league that are calling the gameevery week, you'd know hockey league.

You'd know some, but you're notgoing to know all of them or how
that guy got to that point,right, But head referees twelve years,
twenty five years, twenty two years, twenty eight years, why, Yeah,
got a union protected them and theygot they put their crew together.
I'm wondering does a crew get Doesthe top rated crew chief meaning umpire and
or referee get to choose his guysstart rewarding them. I don't know.

Maybe they do. But if you'rethe head referee, like your hockey leagues
kid, and you're having a greatseason do the next year? Is that
part of your reward that you getto say that side judge is the highest
rated side judge, We're the highestrated. I'm the highest rated referee.
I want that highest rates on mycrew or does the NFL just say now
you go here, you go here, like a draft, you don't get
to choose, right, I don'tknow all the referee progra That's my point.

They are so important in the game, and we in truth as a
player. As a broadcaster, allthese I don't know. And I've got
from Jim Tunney to a lot ofthese Dickhantac buddies of mine that have been
in officiating for a long time.I don't know the protocol. I didn't
know the protocol for them when Iplayed, and I don't know the protocol
now for how deep is the evaluations? I mean, they don't have to
answer questions after security leads them intothe into the locker room, So I

don't know where the evaluation where itends. You know where it starts.
They're going to go in and watchtape the rest of it. But how
much tape do they have to watchon the opponent? And I always wonder
this. I guess maybe it's wortha question getting an official on like,
for instance, let's say the assignmentfor the Texans they're playing Denver. Right,
HM, you probably know who thereferee cru is. Now what don't
you know by Tuesday Wednesday? Whothe referee cruse so you can travel plans?

Right? Yeah? Does that refereecrew they know the game they're getting
assigned. Are they studying? Arethey going back and watching tape of the
offensive line of the Texans and saying, this guy has a tendency to hold,
let's keep an eye on him,or this guy's clean, let's not
watch him. And they I'm wonderingdo they like a team. Do they

study game plans and say, thisteam likes to run the football down here,
so let's keep an eye on this, or do they just go into
a game clean so we'll just react. What is their preconceived notions of a
football team? And when do youthink about the Raiders over the course of
time, What's first thing comes toyour mind when it comes to officials.
They've always I don't know in thelast few years, but when the Raiders
were good about the John Madden Raiders, Ted Hendrix, George Atkinson, Jack

Tatum, Howie Long though and beforeLester Hayes, Mike Kynes, you know
what they did, They'd be inthe top one or two in penalties every
year, personal fouls and guess whatbut they'd win. They were nasty.
They send a message. So whenyou think Raiders, you oil silver and
black patch on the how you knowyou first think you're gonna be a team
that's highly penalized. I wonder ifofficials go in with that preset mindset,

or if a team's a finesse softteam, we don't have to worry about
the run, you know what Imean. I don't know all the protocol
or their preparation. I know damnwell this. If I was a referee
and I got the Denver Houston gamethis week, I'd be studying. I
would watch tape like a coach,study and my opponent about what the keys,
what they do best, so Iknow what I'm gonna If they're running
the football eighty percent of the time, guess what I'm gonna do. Make
sure I keep inside, make surethat I understand right. Yeah, look

for any tendency to get it's analyticsfor them too. Correct. You don't
guess, But I'm just saying,at least you get a head start because
guess what the players are than thereferees A lot faster. Yeah, they
move around quicker. I would addmore referees I would, you know why,
just like I'd add more cameras,more eyes, one guy making the
decision, but more eyes saying,well, you missed that holding. I
got that one. Why can't wehave a referee and a guy like a

caddy with him? You know weall got the head ref watching them all
on the back of the quarterback.Have somebody is specifically your refeen. You're
simply watching one thing hits on thequarterback, nothing more. You know,
you talked about the cameras thing,and there was the topic I brought up
yesterday, that Tank Dell catch andhow there was the picture that I have
of a photographer. You realize thedon't they don't even have They don't have
cameras. Certain games don't have certaincameras. Yes, why is that not

least? Why that's why you're talkingabout. It's not uniformity, It's not
uniformity. Why is that? Whyis that even a thing? Well,
listen, I knew all this about, and it's not just because of that
that missed call. Like league,why that's one call we could have.
You could have grabbed the guy thejersey holding the Petrie hole call. Either
way, they just can't miss thecalls it the normal naked eye at home

can get right, and even whenyou go look at it, you still
don't get it right. No,that's not right. A noon game has
less cameras than the three thirty gamefor a stadium. Here's I just don't
understand. That's why I'm saying,well, do they have that camera?
To me? Part of the NFLProtocol Competition Committee is to get thirty two
owners and say, here's the deal. If you don't have these cameras in

your stadium for instant replay, Idon't know. You have to before the
season cameras check it. If theyLet's say you got twenty eight cameras in
the stadium and you want to addfour more. You want where you want
to get the thirty five or aneven number forty camera wherever it is from
angles. Guess what Now, theNFL's got enough money to go ahead and

fund it. You split the pricethe cost since it's your idea, but
you're also helping teams. It shouldbe all these rules we put in the
off season. Why in the hellwouldn't you as an NFL say I got
one rule and we're gonna have thepylon cam. This cam cameras where every
angle we can see a sideline cat. Just like you want to go into

a bar and watch a TV.The best bars have a TV that you
can see straight. Every seat cansee at least a TV straight if you're
a good bar in my opinion,now where you've got to dip down and
look. Every seat in that househas an angle to see at least a
TV somewhere. Same thing here.There's big money involved. Why in the
world can't you review everything? Andwhy in the world is there not a
camera? There should be protocol.If there's twenty eight cameras NRG, there

needs to be twenty eight cameras inLas Vegas. Yeah, it should be.
It's the well, we don't havethat camera here, but we have.
Then you're asked better put it in. Next year, you're getting fined
two hundred and fifty grand the priceof a camera for not putting it where
you're supposed to put it. That'spart of this league, dude. You
want it right, We need morecameras in your stadium protocol. Everybody's got

thirty five cameras, deal with it, thirty three. I don't get it,
but you know what you never will. Yeah, I will. Is
never a money thing. I knowthat. Oh no, it's always a
money thing. But it wouldn't bea money thing because they got the money
to cover it. Yeah, that'swhat I meant. Like, there's no
lack of funds being tossed around inthe NFL at all, and the owners
look at David Tepper at all.That's another topic that I want to get

to today. Is he one ofthe worst owners in sports. He's one
of the most impatient one. That'sthe problem is owners. A lot of
these owners really aren't football guys,and they won't hire some football guys right
below. If you're a good owner, get out of the way, sign
paychecks. If you love football,hire good football people. He's he's also
an owner of a soccer club.A lot of the fired two of their
head coaches over the last like fouror five years. It's crazy. That's

it's like you kind of mentioned.The highest graded officials are rewarded by working
postseason games. Those who have hadsubpar performances during the regular season watch the

playoffs from home. Officials whose performanceperformance is worse than sub can be subject
to remediation or a demotion. NFLreferees work on a year to year contract.
If they don't do their job well, there's a chance they will not
be brought back the following year.There have actually been occasions where referees have
lost their job mid season. Intwenty eighteen, down judge Hugo Cruz was

fired mid season after a blatant missedfalse start in a Week six game between
the Browns and the Los Angeles Chargers. His dismissial fire after missing one illegal
procedure pedalies false start, false start. His dismissal reportedly was based on Cruise's
performance failing to meet league standards overa sustained period of time. It was

the first mid season firing of anofficial in the Super Bowl era. So
it wasn't one that was the cherryon top. They'd been missing and missing,
missing. Then he missed a blatantfalse start and they sent him to
the bus stop. Yeah, sothey're subject to a weekly evaluation process.
How many of them they'll lose theirjob after a week? No, none

or and most don't lose it aftera year. But what's what's that guy's
named Hugo? You go Cruise?I know, you know wherever I go,
you go, Hugo you go go, you go go go. Yeah,
love, Hugo go go. Ido. I don't know what happened.
I wonder if that was just theend of it. I mean,
if just if they gave him achance, like, do they put him
in a probationary status as an officialor they tell him to get to step

him a chance to come back?Take a little time off, go get

now. So I'm trying to findwhat do you what do you think he's
doing? A partying, probably hangingout so he doesn't have to listen to
guys like you ripping for missing acall, rude to Hugo and Hugo Cruise.
Not to be confused with Hugo Cruzand the Caminos. They're playing up
in Pittsburgh's coming weekend in case you'rewondering, can't wait. Yeah, I

don't know. So the evaluation process, I'm sure it's stringent. I am.
I'm sure they get after it andit's very you know, they listen
the referees are under a tremendous amountof stress, no doubt, to be
sharp and good. I don't wantthat gig, but they're gonna get criticized
because they make, you know,make the big money doing it when you're
one of those crews, have beenaround a while, got the good union

(20:29):
to support them and protect them,and rightfully so. But they're not above
criticism, I can sure tell youthat, and they should be evaluated like
everybody else in the workplace in theirjob. We just don't hear their evaluation
or see the written evaluation about them, because well, they protect that and
keep it in house. And youknow what, I don't blame them,
but the problem with not having themaddress the media ever is accountability. They
let the league office do it,not the guy who made the call.

(20:51):
But I would imagine, like anythingelse, if you're a salesperson you don't
make a sale for ten years,I would imagine you're probably not a salesperson
with that company anymore. Is samething here. If you keep missing calls
and you're evaluate eighty percent eighty percent, and you're missing twenty percent of the
calls weekly, I would imagine overa sustained amount of time that if you
can't sustain a certain score that we'veeither got a demochi or this job's not
for you. I get it withreferees, and they got a lot because

(21:15):
now if we keep missing everybody,everybody every week thinks the referees are against
them. I saw, oh referees, NFL wants the Texans to lose.
That's not true. You just gotan officiating crew that sucked last week,
had a bad week. They don'tall suck. Some missed it and they
got most of the calls right.But the ones they did miss were a
little too blatant for me and you. Not that they care, but they

were. I think they want toget them right. So no, the
NFL doesn't have it in for theJaguars, or for the Texans or for
somebody else. They don't. Butyou still got to get it right.
And the gripes are very very fair. The problem is you'll hear any time
there's a call against somebody, you'llhear the crowd oh boo boo, even
when it's blatantly right. Then therewas plenty that were blatantly right that they

but you know, a handful equalsa bunch when it's caused officials missing calls.
You missed five or six calls ina game, to me, that's
too many, especially too easy ones, right, I agree. Yeah,
there's probably more MYSS that should havebeen called than like a holding call or
a pass interference than shouldn't have beencalled. So they they they the evaluation

process is important, but as weall know, they don't always they don't
always get it right. So whatdo you? What are you going to
do? And they should be evaluatedhard and we should have high expectations.
Yeah, I would love to hearofficials talk after a game, at least
one of them. I've been askingfor that for years and I just and
then you're not going to get itbecause they don't want to open up that

can of worms. So yeah,it's just a all weekend long, not
just in the Texans game. Therewere blatant miss calls all throughout the league
on Sunday, some right in frontof officials too, like Justin Herbert running
out of bounds early in that gameand he gets rocked right in front of
you and he doesn't call it.I mean, the dude is staring at

the play and no flag nothing.I just I did say it's crazy,
but yet Look, I would neverwant that job. I can tell you
that I think they do a goodjob for the most part. But just
here, I don't know if it'sbeen just this year, but they are
just it seems like they just getworse and worse and worse with some of
these calls. And I'm glad theyget held accountable, but just get the

damn thing right. And if ithas to come up with getting more cameras
in the stadium, well then thatshould be uniformity as too. Just like

and Darren Woodson all looking to getin after falling short a year ago.

the list wherever you want. Itstarts on first time about those two belong

and both have proven that daily basis, weekly basis, yearly basis their
entire careers. And there's a lotHow's Devin Hester not in the world in
the Hall of Fame now? Thereason why because he's a majority special teams
player. We don't seem to wantto put those guys in as quickly.
But I can tell you this theChicago Bears ain't sniffing that Super Bowl run
without Devin Hester on that team.He impacted his They deserve their special teams,

players deserve. Listen, you knowwhat we wanted when they got to
kick a field goal, but wedon't want to put him in the Hall

worked with Arizona State. I playedagainst him, covered him. All those

Eric and I played against each otherwhen he was Philly. Talk about a
bad man too. And Eric isnot a self promoter, but was as
consistent he was on that Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Seth Joyner, That's
Philly teams. He was as goodas any guy that had on the team.
He was as good at his position, maybe outside Reggie White, as
any guy a corner was in theleague. He was that good. Those
