Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Talk seven to ninety Sean Salisbury Show with Dan
Matthews and join now as we are every single Wednesday.
The forty six and thirty three first place Houston Astros
general manager Dana Brown joins us Now, Dana, welcome in.
It's great to have you on for your weekly visit.
What are wins like last night? A great pitching performance

(00:22):
by both teams, clutch hitting at the right time for
the psyche and the confidence and swagger. What's a win
like that do when the bats weren't alive and well
but the clutch hit.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, those wins are huge. You know when you get
the performance that you got from Framberg, you know Valdez,
he was outstanding for seven. You know, the bullpen came
in and shut it down. It's a big win because
it's a really good team. The Phillies are really good,
they're playing well, they're in first place. You get that
one win. You got two really good teams coming into

(00:53):
the to the building this week to dyk In Park,
and so you know, you get that first one against
two teams that you're playing that are in first place.
He's gonna be two tough series for us. You know,
it's an exciting first win, and that's it's big for
the club. The timely hitting, and just I can't say
enough about the pitching.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Dana, Do you use series like this? I mean, obviously
they're all important when you play a good team like
the Phillies and the way they're playing in those three
guys you're facing, the starting pitchers are all damn good
in pitching. Well, we know the reputation of the guy
you're facing today, and Zach Wheeler. When you see this,
do you what do you get? I mean, do you
know going in that this is a measuring stick? Do

(01:34):
you literally measure against Philly more than you would against Oakland?
The wins and losses all matter, But is it easier
to gauge your team in a game like this or
when you're supposed to beat a team on a regular basis.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, I mean we love to play the good ball clubs.
I mean we actually play very well. I think we're
leading and winning series against all the better teams and
so you know, that's a nice feather in your cap.
And so I mean, these guys really step it up.
You know when we play these tough teams, they know
it's going to be a tough battle in or they
getting a few aghs in this series, and so you

(02:10):
know it does a lot for you confidence wise when
you play a good club and you could, you know,
pull out some victories haven't. Doesn't make no mistake about it.
You know, it does a lot for the club. You know,
these guys are locked in right now and they've been
fun to watch this.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Uh everything you get. Let let me go to one
of the injuries real quick, because you mentioned the bullpen.
We'll get back to last night and the team in
the season. Uh, Dubin the strain in the in the forearm, Dana,
is there any reason that we should believe that surgery
is possible or when will we know we're out of
the woods on that.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Yeah, I don't think surgery is possible. Look, I think
that at the end of the day. Uh, you know,
Dubin's going to be fine. It's just going to take
some time. These probably needs a little bit of rest.
You know, you've heard me say this often on this
program that the one sixty two you know you're gonna
run into some hiccups when you play all these games,
and so I think this is, you know, one of

(03:07):
those injuries where you know, he'll go through the you know,
the fifteen day I l and then we'll circle back
and see how he feels. But uh, we don't think
this is going to be that long. And you know,
he's been a really good piece for us in the
middle of our our bullpen, pitching those middle winnings, and
so we're looking forward to getting them back.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Dana Brown astros GM for his weekly visit here on
Wednesday on the Sean Salisbury Show on Sports Talk seven
ninety Dana, any chance we see him in the batter's
box before the All Star break, meaning your Don Alvarez.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yeah, I mean, look, I think there's a good chance.
He's just started as hitting on Sunday late afternoon, and
so you know he's taking some taking some cuts. I
think we're gonna amp them up, get them amped up
this you know, this week, we'll we'll allow him to
you know, pick some batting practice live, We'll pick them
off the tee. You know, we'll get to the point

(04:01):
where we'll take some off the machine. And so now
it's that time where you know, he's feeling really good
and so we're going to allow him to swing the bat.
You know, we started on Sunday, Sunday afternoon, and so,
you know, talking to your isand yesterday he feels really good,
and so you know, we're gonna, you know, we're going
to push through this thing with him, and I think

(04:22):
he feels good this time, and so we're looking forward
to getting them back, you know, at some point here soon.
I feel confident that it should be before the All
Star break. Dana.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
You mentioned the word grid a lot, which is a
great word and a great kind of description of this team.
But you're sixteen and seven, and stats can be overrated
and misleading. These two aren't sixteen and seven in one
run games and twenty and oh in games where you've
come from behind. You're twenty and oh. You know, those
are fairly alarming statistics. And grit's important, as you well know,

(04:58):
and mentioned in a good way reg Larly. There's something
other than grint. What is it with this team?

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah? I would start with the pitching. You know, the
bullpen's been really good to hold down those leads when
we come back. You know, Uh, it really starts with
the pitching and the defense. The defense has been really good.
You know, we can catch the baseball. You know, at
some point. You know, on infield, you'll see that we'll
have a gold glove at every position, and so, I

(05:27):
mean that's very important. And then getting those timely hits,
you know, our offense every now and then we'll get
on all cylinders. We've been on and off, but you
know we've been heating. We've been heating up lately, you know.
So that's been good to see our guys heating up.
And so you know, when you put all three of
those together, that's when you can get those you know,

(05:50):
those good numbers like that. You know, good pitching, good defense,
timely hitting very important to one run games. We've been
really good in one. We're in games two as well.
So uh yeah, it's too fun to watch. The boys
are picking each other up, you know, even with these
injuries that we have, these guys consistently pick each other up,

(06:12):
and we're getting pretty good performances, you know, out of
our guys. And you know, some of these young starters
have come up and given us some really good starts,
like Gordon, you know, Walters, uh, you know, Gusto has
been really good and you know Alexander. These guys have
really stepped it up with these injuries we've had, you know,

(06:33):
in our rotation, so you know that's off to them,
and you know, we hope they continue to have some
success at the major league level. Dana.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
We we talked so much about you know, your upbeat
about your team, and you always let us know that
they're going to go on this hitting streak and the
rest of it. So it's so much positive and especially
this year to like. And it's a long season, as
you mentioned, but hey, it's a grinding grit for you too.
You got to deal with it the emotion. You don't
get a bat in your hand or you don't get
to throw a baseball. So for you when you're going
through this, all the good stuff, but what is the

(07:02):
biggest frustration for you, Not that it can't be fixed,
but the biggest frustration for you seventy nine games into
your season.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, I don't have much frustration at all. I mean,
we're forty six and thirty three, we're thirteen over, we're
in first place, four and a half up in the
in the division. We're battling through injuries, the guys are
showing grit. Yeah, there's there's nothing to be frustrated about.
We just have to continue to do what we're doing,
and you know, we're gonna we're gonna get some of

(07:33):
these guys back off the IL, and you know it's
probably gonna come at a time where we're gonna need them.
And you know, if we can continue to play like
we're playing, you know, the frustration is there's none. I mean,
we I can't get frustrated when you know the guys
are playing the way they're playing, especially when we have
so many guys on the IL. I really love the

(07:54):
grit of this team, and you know, the support we
get at home with our fans and even on a road.
I mean, we're going through, you know, a tough time
with injuries, and these guys are continuing to battle every
single night. And so, yeah, frustration is not my vocabulary
right now.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Dana Brown a couple more minutes here on Sports Talk
seven ninety. You know, Dana, you uh and the way
you've built this team, and you mentioned no frustration, but
the way you've built this team and the way Joe
Aspota has handled this year forty six and thirty three,
and you mentioned that there's not a lot of frustration
when you're judging and everybody just all this guy's hurting

(08:34):
what's going on here? And you have to hear all
that from media fans. You go through it and the
grind for you, as I mentioned, but with you when
you're evaluating yourself, and I don't think we've ever talked
about this, when you're evaluating yourself on when you see
a team doing what they're doing and you're by yourself
self reflecting, how do you evaluate your performance yourself that
things are going? Is it just by the way a

(08:56):
players playing everything? How do you evaluate you?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah? My yeah. My principle is this, judge yourself and
you won't be judged. That's that's the principle that I
go by and I can. I'm I'm tough on myself,
constantly evaluating what I'm doing, and uh, look I got
to hand it to Joe and the coaching staff. These
guys are really getting these guys to turn the corner. Uh,

(09:23):
you know, I'm hard on myself. I judge myself. I
got a good staff around me, my assistant GM and
my directors and so look, we're in the grid every
single day and then we're trying to work this thing
out and we're trying to get better and we we
take what we got and we make the best of it.
We prepare for every single game. You know, As I mentioned,

(09:45):
we got a good coaching staff down there, you know,
and led by Joe as the head as the head guy.
Look the manager, he's he's really doing a great job
with these players. We have good relationship with these players,
and so I think it's a well loyal machine. And uh,
you know, guys are getting after it and we're we're
we're battling the bumps in the road and we're continuing

(10:08):
to keep our eyes on the prize and the eyes
on the prizes. Went into the division, getting back deep
into the postseason to try to get another world championship here,
and he's.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Dana is Joe a spot of the manager of the
year with all the circumstance. I know you're not voting
for it, but just looking what he's done, it's pretty spectacular.
With with with with all these injuries and people leaving
in the offseason, it's been pretty impressive. I would imagine
that you're you hold the same feelings about.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Him, Absolutely very impressive. Joe is a steady hand. He
really manages well. He has, uh you know that right temperament.
You know sometimes, you know, I get a little high strung,
and uh, you know, Joe is like level head, you know,
keep it calm, you know, keep your hands on the

(10:53):
steering wheel, eyes on the road. And he's done a
really good job with these guys, and you know, hats
off to him, you know, for what he's done, you know,
to keep the shift in the right direction with all
the injuries and you know, staying positive. I mean we
talked every single day, twice a day down in his office,
and you know, he's been doing an outstanding job. And

(11:17):
I think, you know, his style of leadership, with his
relationship with the players, you know, that's big in today's game.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Dana. Will you mentioned I know you talked to the
players often too about getting over stuff and moving forward
and staying the course and grinding with that grit. Do
you get over to frustrate you talking about high start?
Do you get over him as quickly as you expect
the players to? Do you get over the tough times?

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah? Look, I get a little high strung because you know,
I sometimes demand perfection, right you know, and I know
in this sport you can't be perfect. And you know,
I don't win one hundred and sixty two games and
lose zero. That's them possible. But that's my goal is
to like win every ball game. And so we know
that some games we're not going to win, but I

(12:02):
expect to win every time we hit the field, and
you know, sometimes you're going to come up on the
losing side, which is part of this part of what
we do in baseball. But you know, I really hold
myself to a high standard, you know, and you know
that's just the way it is. And I think you
have to be that way when you play one hundred

(12:22):
and sixty two games, because you never want to get
to the end of the season and come up one
game short. I don't think there's anything more frustrated. And
so you hold high standards for every single game and
you hope to push out on the top, you know,
with a nice lead at the end.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
All right, as we let you go, we all when
we're talking injuries and we have today about oh, it's
a bummer, this guy may not be back, or this
guy's coming back. At the All Star Breaker. At the
end of the All Star break, obviously the good news
on your don is there any good surprising news that
you're going to say this guy could come back sooner
and help us when we didn't expect it. Are we
going to see any of that coming down the pike soon?

(12:58):
Good news on the injury front.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Yeah, I'm hoping we have two of those in Javier
and Aarraghetty. As I mentioned before, Arraghetty's biting at the bit.
You know, he's ready to accelerate it, but we have
to actually slow him down. Javier is down in camp
right now in West Palm, touching ninety five, so he
looks like the Javier of old. And so those two guys,

(13:24):
we can get those guys back, you know, let them
continue to progress. We don't want to rush them. But
they're both looking really good. And so those are two
guys that I really have my eyes on to be
nice pieces to put back into the rotation. And so yeah,
we're looking for a shot in the arm with those guys.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah, wouldn't that be a blessing. Congratulations on everything that's
happened these first seventy nine. A lot to go, and
good luck on the rest of this Homestand that's five
pretty impressive games we're gonna have to play in against
two good teams and it sure is fun. I'd just
say we like I'm going to do anything meeting the Stros.
You guys, keep it up and we'll look forward to
next week's conversation.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Absolutely, let's go, hatstro fans, keep the energy high. We're
ready to go.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
There you go, Davis, We appreciate you, brother, thank you,
and we'll talk to you next week. That's the Astros
GM Dana Brown. I would imagine even this while they
expect to win them all day, as we go to break,
I don't think considering all the circumstances,
