Shawn Salisbury, Brian Lilma, EmmanuelElmore, Texans being the Broncos Tank dell
out for the season with a brokenankle. College football playoffs, That's what
we're going to discuss this hour.Willie Fritz hired as a new head coach
for the University Houston football program.Let's look at the college football playoffs.

(01:15):
Number one Michigan taking on number fourAlabama in the Rose Bowl on January first,
Washington and the University of Texas playingin the All State Sugar Bowl.
Obviously, the Rose Bowl out inPasadena, California. Sugar Bowl can be
played in New Orleans at the CaesarsSuperdome. Seawn, did the committee get

(01:38):
it right? Georgia Florida State leftout? Well, well, I they
got it right, but they didn'tget it right. I guess it depends
on which criteria you're talking about.I think for this year in twenty twenty
three, the way it was setup and the way it turned out,
this is the only way they coulddo it in my opinion. If you're

(02:01):
telling me, well, okay, you tell me right now, I'm on
the committee, go ahead, Andand I'm asking you, so you're asking
me what's the crag you and Iare on the committee. I look,
I say, what's our criteria?What is yours? I mean, I'm
asking you. You're as part ofa thirt team member, what's your number
one thing you got to win?Okay, on the field I'm talking about

(02:23):
is this last week and when you'remaking those decision? What is your number
one when you're sending the four tothe playoff? What sits at the top
of your list? Who who's thebet? Who's the best four? Say?
Lower? Who are the best four? Teams out of these eight.
Then they didn't get it right. Then then they didn't get it right.
If you're talking about who's the bestfour under these circumstances, about conference championships

(02:45):
and all the other criteria, theygot it right because in truth, if
you're asking me, Sean, yourlife's on the line, your your money
is on the line, your mortgageis online. You said, of the
top eight teams, you got toput it all on one team to win
it all the top eight, youknow who I'm betting on Georgia without question,

(03:07):
without quoting, and Michigan probably second, and now Michigan's number one team
in the country, and Michigan quitefrankly, offense passing offense, while they're
good, has been a little bitsuspect recently as far as their domination.
But I would still I'm talking aboutlight, your mortgage is on the line,
I'm still taking Georgia over Michigan. And I would take Alabama over a

(03:30):
lot of those teams too. Ithink Alabama's playing fantastic football right and Milroe's
legs are friggin stupid. That dude'sa freak show with his in physical get
to hims. One thing try tobring his ass downs another and he can
outrun you, I mean, andis passing. While at times it was
inconsistent, this time he still hitthe right throws when necessary. He's a

(03:50):
dangerous friggin football player. Man.But Georgia, I would pick him over
everybody. So if you're going bythe criteria, you say, I want
the four best, the four bestnot playing. Would I tell you about
the last look you give? Thelast look Georgia got was a loss for
a team that's won twenty almost thirtystraight, two time national champion. Are

(04:12):
they one of the four best teamsin America? Sean they're playing on a
neutral site, Texas or Georgia.Who you're picking. I'm taking Georgiaia,
Oregon, Washington, Ohio State, they play Alabama again. It's hard to
beat a team to I would takeGeorgia. I just would. And Kirby
say, if you're talking about thefour belt, you can't convince me that
george is not one of the fourbest teams. So under your crimetera,

(04:32):
you're just taking the four best.We missed it there. But under the
circumstances of now you go down,we want conference champions, well, we
want undefeated conference champions. Now FloridaState will tell you they didn't get it
right, and they do have alegitimate no questions asked. Every year you
say post your best, go winand if you win, and you're the
conference champion and an undefeated conference championwithout your two starting quarterback for two games

(04:56):
should go a long way. Theydeserve it. But who you It's like
an All Star when you pick itAll Star guys, all of this is
more important than an All Star gameand a team effort. I died in
the team. From the team scenario, You tell me who you taking out
of the four who are there toput it? Remove Georgia from it.
We've already know why they're not in. Is Georgia one of the four best
teams in the country right now?Would you put your mortgage on them against

(05:18):
all the other seven? Absolutely ifyou had to. So did they get
it right with the four best? No? Well, if you put your
money on it, is Georgia oneof the four best team? Yeah,
of course, So no, Idon't think they did. That's exactly that
part. They didn't. But withall the other criteria that comes in the
last what's the last vantage that's youknow who went in a Heisman Trophy?

(05:39):
Do you Jayden Daniels is winning it? He played well, played pretty well.
Did he have a moment where yousaid, that's the best player in
America? I mean a full game, dude, You're you're fanatic. I
know, I know. I justJade Daniels the best player, the best

(06:00):
player. Jayden Daniels is right there. I think with the night that he
missed dynamic things that he does. But yet he didn't play in a big
game. Right. And I'm goingto this when I said, if Pennix
and or bow Nicks have bo Nicksis not gonna be that he's he's but
he's gonna go. He's he nodoubt. Carson Beck didn't have his best
game. He's not. He maynot even get invited now, but it's

(06:21):
close. My thing is, didPennix do enough for you to say,
wow, that's the Heisman undefeated PACtwelve? Did he or has Jade Daniels
been the better player? I thinkif he did, if Michael Penix did
do that, we wouldn't be havingthis discussion. We would know it's a
no brainer. That's what I That'sfor me going in I want if I
walked out of there saying, there'sno question Friday night, that's your Heisman

(06:42):
Trophy. Do I believe Penix isnow going to finish probably second? Does
he deserve if he wins it,should you be up in arms? Absolutely
not? And what a great kid. But in truth we can and we
got the best players, and whythe visual we see? But the last
if he had put a stamp onit's different. Bow Nicks had an average
game, so guess what. Healready eliminated him after going in many thought
he was the front runner. Samething with football. We look at Georgia

(07:05):
and the last thing we got yougot beat by Alabama. Even though you're
one of the four best teams,we can't put you in now Florida State.
If Texas had lost two games andwon the Big Twelve Championship, if
Washington had one loss but still wonthe Big Twelve Championship, well Georgia will
probably still be in. But thenFlorida State goes. So do I feel

(07:26):
for Florida? Does Mike Norvel andthat team? You absolutely have all the
biggest bitch on the play. Thereis no question you can bitch all you
want. You have the biggest bitchgoing right now, bigger than Georgia,
even though because of your record andwhat they say the criteria is but the
best team in the country in mymind, for my money, if I
had a better it's still Georgia. So they didn't get that part right.
But with it, who you takingout for Florida State removed Georgia, Okay,

(07:47):
they lost. Who you taking outnobody? Florida State. Look,
I get it. I feel forthose kids, I feel for the head
coach, Mike Norvel. But atthe end of the day, without one
of the floridaft teams, they haveno business being the College football playoffs.
Listen, without that quarterback. Ifthe seven teams and of the eight teams,
I would take the other seven onthe neutral side over Florida State,

(08:09):
every single one of them. Yeah, doesn't matter who it is that Georgia,
Oregon, who else we met,Georgia, Oregon, Alabama, Ohio
State, Michigan. I'd take allof them to beat Florida State in the
game. So Florida State that way, they're not one of the four best
teams. So while they have anargument, the way the system is,
the system hosed them. If wehad eight teams there in and then we
get to see it. We don'tthis year, we got four teams.

(08:31):
You're not taking Texas out. NoAlabama Hammer I mean when when I say
Hammers, they had a phenomenal footballgame and had to battle it against the
number one team who doesn't lose, and you beat them early. Like I
said, please stop telling me anybodythat September games don't matter. You damn
right, they matter. They shouldhave mattered more going into this game.
It should have been if Texas winsAlabama or Georgia, regardless, Texas should

(08:56):
have been we should Texas. Allsthey should have had to do was go
to take care of their business handily, and they did. They shouldn't have
to worry about Florida State or orthe loser of the Georgia Alabama game,
because if Georgia wins, Texas wasa lock, in my opinion of stone
cold lock. Yeah that once Alabamawon. And now you're gonna go retroactive

(09:16):
on me if you're the comedian andsay, oh okay, now the September
win by by Texas matters because theywent in to beat Georgia two. That
just heightens it. It shouldn't heidened. It was the biggest win of the
year. It's the best win ofthe year of any of any of the
top ten teams in the country oranywhere. Going tescal loose and winning.
Yeah, they just validated it evenmore. But that shouldn't have even come
into question. They beat him atmatters. If not, then I'm never

(09:39):
scheduling a tough team in September. So Texas going in, had Georgia won
that game against Alabama, if you'reTexas, you should have started celebrating.
Then there's no way you were goingto put Florida State in ahead because Florida
State' is not one of the fourbest teams. And then the eye tests
for Florida State on the last game, you look at you looked at there.
Hey, I know, you diminishyour team because your quarterback wasn't there

(10:01):
and they are Listen, they provedthey can win without their quarterback. But
you ain't beating Georgia or Alabama orMichigan without that quarter Imagine that team going
out play in Michigan, right,Well I can and they get beat by
a couple of touchdowns, right,So that part it sucks, and it's
fine. And they are deeper andbetter, better than just their quarterback.
They've got listen. When it comesto pure athletes, they can play with

(10:22):
anybody. Their defense is really good. Damn right there are they quarterback and
they're not very good. Oh sothe eye test told you that they're not
a top four team in the country. So they got it right that way.
If you're talking about the four bestteams in the country, if you
really want to make that argument,Georgia is one of the four best teams
in the country. Period. Andif my mortgage was on the line and
I had to bet everything on itand you said, take of the top

(10:45):
eight, who you picking, I'mgoing right to Athens, George and laying
my money on that table. Yeahboo Corgan, the chair of the College
Football Playoff Committee, explain why theychose Alabama over Florida State. We'll hear
that audio next hand. Stop it. Well, they had, they asked
them, and it's pretty interesting tolisten to. And then we'll get to
your call. Seven one, three, two, five, seven. I
got quite a few people want toget in on this college football Playoff discussion.

here on Sports Talk seven ninety SeanBrown and Triple Lee Texans beat the Broncos.
Willie Fritz, hired as the newhead coach for the University of Houston,
Takedale out for the season with abroken ankle, talking college football and
the college football playoffs. Some audiofrom bou Corgan, part of the college
football playoff committee. He told uswhy the committee chose Alabama over Florida State.

(12:30):
And this is what Boo had tosay, why did you choose Alabama?
Well, I think in looking atit and again that that was the
decision. It was Alabama at forFlorida State is a different team than they
were through the first eleven weeks.Coach Norvel, their players, their fans,
you know, an incredible season. But as you look at who they

(12:52):
are as a team right now, without Jordan Travis, without the offensive dynamic
that he brings to it, theyare a different team. And the committee
voted Alabama four in Florida State five. There are a number of people in
that committee room, Boo who havefootball backgrounds. Jim Grove, great coach
at Wake Forest. You had WillShield, who's a Hall of Fame player.

(13:16):
You've got Joe Taylor, great coach, Chris All, great coach.
When they were debating this, andBooker's been talking about it's okay to win
with defense. When the coaches, the football judgment people in the room we're
debating this, what moved them?I think it's one of the questions that
we do ask is from a coachingstandpoint, you know, who do you

(13:39):
want to play? Who do younot want to play? And as we
go through that again, looking atwhere we are today right not where we
were three weeks ago or you know, eight weeks ago, who do they
want to play? Who do theynot want to play and they've got a
significant voice in the room. Andas we went through that, and we
went around and around late last Icame back again this morning to do it

(14:01):
again, and you know again,we came back with you know, the
top four as we did in FloridaState at five. That's bout Corgan.
I personally just the Florida State thingonce the day started to continue on,
after watching the way Texas played footballand yours and the eye test, which

(14:24):
is part of it, having thosefootball guys in the room, and watching
Alabama do what they did. TheFlorida State game, to me was nothing
more than the formality, right.I think going into the game, I
didn't have any when I woke upSunday morning, it was Michigan, Alabama,
Washington and Texas in no particular order. I to me my question,

(14:46):
and I know people don't like yousaid for you listening to Herb Street and
they talk about for best. Minewasn't whether Alabama's going as I've said all
along, or Texas. Mine wasis Georgia gonna unseat somebody like Oregon had
an Oregon one. I mean, obviously on Saturday I wouldn't think this,
But if Oregon would to beat Washington. Is Georgia the one? And if

(15:09):
you really look at schedules, intruth, Michigan hadn't beat anybody other than
they beat Ohio State and their quarterbackstransfer. They beat Penn State. That's
it. I mean, I don'tmean it's disrespectful. I mean, if
we're talking about hardcore rough going, they were able to use their quarterback.
I mean, if you want totalk about teams that look different, what
six games this year they didn't havetheir head coach? Yeah, and they

(15:31):
went and won, which would takea look at the if in truth you
want to talk now, Michigan's numberone, and I think a lot of
us had them at the top ofthe heat preseason. Michigan belongs in it.
Don't misunderstand me, and I thinkthey can win the whole thing.
My point is some of the thingsyou are punishing another school by you're not
doing the same thing to certain schools. You get. My point isn't the

(15:52):
ad at Michigan on that committee aswell? I don't know why, but
should an athletic to in a Powerfive school beyond that committee? In truth?
Should they? I mean, Ilisten, you're always going to lean
towards your conference and possibly your team. Okay, but regardless, I didn't

(16:14):
have a I still went in onSaturday night thinking you're telling me George's not
one of the four best team.I agree with Kirby Smart, they're one
of the four best teams. Thatwas my question Florida State. Once the
night game got to fruition and yousaw what Michigan was going to do to
Iowaio can't move the ball. Ididn't think Florida State's win unless they'd have
hung fifty five on them. Ididn't think Florida State was even in the

(16:36):
conversation anymore. And there's no waysomebody's going to tell me that Alabama beating
Georgia in that game in the SECchampion Alabama lost early in the season,
has adjusted got their quarterback role andthat they're not one of the four best
teams in the country. That wasn'teven in It wasn't even in question.
I know they would ended up four. Is that correct? Yes, you
saw the Michigan Did you see theMichigan room when they announced the fourth team

(16:56):
was Yeah, they were They werelike, I don't want to I don't
want to play them Damn, I'drather play Florida State right, tells you
everything you need to know. Alabamato me was never in question if they
beat Georgia. It was never aquestion. And it beat it, just
like buy a field goal, justlike we said, what if it's a
field goal game? Right? Andit was it was. But the problem

(17:18):
is you can't take Washington out.You can't take the lesser of two evils.
Is Florida State staying home? Okay, not Florida State going And I
hate to say that. It bumsme out for them. Alabama to me,
with the viger at victory over Georgia, they said they were talking about
it. They weren't giving that toomuch thought. Dude, I'm just telling
you they weren't. Alabama was going, let's get out to the phone line

(17:40):
seven one three two one two fiveseven. I had to start with biscuit,
Biscuit, thanks for holding man. What's up by my ma? Lima.
We had this discussion last week, did we Lima big Sean and Sean?
I think I think we One thingwe underestimated with the committee in regards
to ut and Alabama is is theydid take an account all long because Lalima

(18:02):
you can matter fact check me wouldhave. But since Texas beat Alabama,
Texas never dropped below Alabama. Andso if you're gonna move Alabama up,
the Horns gotta go too well, depending depending on who they played along the
way. Yeah, you're you're you'reright. It worked out both ways.
Once Texas won, yeah, Ihonestly, and when Washington you did it

(18:29):
in Michigan, wa Yeah. Tome, the Florida State game was a
formality. The winner of the SECchampionship was going and should I still think
George is one of the four bestteams in the country, but this year
you couldn't put him in because howwould you even explain that one to Oregon
or Texas or Alabama. You getbeat by Alabama and you still go.
No, Alabama was going. Butthey what they did is they heightened the

(18:51):
September wind because Alabama beat Georgia.I would have had I would have had
Texas ahead of them all along anyway. And the truth this by them saying
that Oregon and Ohio State were aheadof Texas, they didn't value it as
much as they should have. Butonce they saw what Alabama did to Georgia,
there's like they looked at each otherand said, I guess we should

(19:11):
take September football pretty seriously. Damnright you should Texas after Texas's win.
To me, it was a nobrainer. It did not matter what happened.
Georgia wins, Texas was going,Alabama wins convincedly Florida State was always
We've talked about it for weeks, was always going to be if there was
an odd man out, it wasgoing to be them win or lose.

(19:33):
And that's exactly what happened. Onequestion for you, and this is the
problem I had with the committee, but I wanted to see it happen,
to see what they would do.But because the problem that they can't explain
is why does lusor late in theyear count more than losing early in the
year. You know, I haveno idea. That's the one they can't

(19:55):
explain, because, like you said, Georgia, their misfortunate is they later
in the year. If they hadlost earlier in the year, they'd be
going. Yeah, I one hundredpercent agree. If this loss that Georgia
had would have been in September, they would have had even a more difficult
time putting like Washington ahead of Georgia. I'm just telling you they would have
they it would have been they wouldhave struggled because Georgia is one of the

(20:19):
four best teams. It's the timingof the loss. Yet Alabama was three.
I don't know why. Now,I understand if four guys on your
roster get hurt, you're starting quarterbackers, why you demit with like Florida State,
they are a different team. Butwhen Alabama got beat by Texas,
Alabama was the third ranked team inthe country and climbing, and they got
beat at that point in time, why we diminish it because out of side,

(20:41):
out of mind, there was nothingdiminished about it. It shouldn't have
been. It was a It's thebiggest win of the year until this one,
Alabama beating Georgia, which benefited Texasand Alabama both. Yeah, I
don't get You're exactly right. Georgia, by winning twenty something almost thirty games
straight, got beat by a reallygood Alabama team by a field goal.

(21:02):
And that's the only reason they're notthere, because they are one of the
four best teams in the country period. Thank you for the call, Biscuit.
Thanks Biscuit. Think if Washington hadone loss but was a Pack twelve
champs. If Texas had two lossesas the Big twelve champs, Georgia would
be in, right, they wouldhave flat ass in. That's exactly title
game against Alabama. No, especiallyTexas with two loss would have been out,

(21:25):
no doubt, even if they'd havewon the Big Big twelve championship.
If if Washington had one loss butwould have still won the Big the Pack
twelve Championship, guess what, Georgiais your fourth team and they would have
taken them. They had a FloridaState at least they should have. If
you're going by best teams, Le'sget the John real quick before the break,
John, what's going on? Itwas fellas Uh. I kind of

(21:45):
I'm kind of disappointed in the committee. I feel like that Florida State.
They don't know what Flawda Stake wouldhave did if they got to play out.
Blada Stake got a pretty good defense. And the fact they're is they
always ask them why these players hopfrom team the team, but they go
out for the money because they can'tbe lowed to one team if they go

(22:08):
underfeeding and don't make it to theBig Dance. I mean, how bad
can that be? They played everybodywas on their schedule. Even when they
lost they starting quarterback, they didn'tfold game out there and won the game.
They won their comfort, which almostfeels John like it should be more
impressive, right that they won withbackups. Yeah, no, I'm with

(22:29):
you. I get that. Yeah, so your player, you got a
player you want to be lost toyour team? He said, Man,
it's some money grab. I mean, if Alabama's gonna be in there anyway
from eighth spot, why do theyhave flooda stake in there in the gate
go in the top four. Ifyou're gonna do that, you should have
dropped them a long time ago.If they weren't the best team of the

(22:49):
league, you should have I mean, in the company, should have got
them a week ago and put Alabamaup there. Alabama hopped from the eighth
spot into the playoffs. That's notright. That's that they probably should have
been. They probably should have beenhigher than eight going into that game.
That's what they should have been.Yes, you're right. So I just
feel like they messed up. Ifeel like they're gonna mess up college football

(23:12):
because they kind of make money. They want eyes on the game. They
want people watch these games. Butthey telling the kid, hey, loock
man, if you don't go tothe SEC, you ain't gonna play in
the playoff. I don't care ifyou win every game you play, because
that's what they want in the playoffsto put it's a money grab. So
I just think it's gonna be badfor college I'm an hang up with listen,
guys, that's a fantastic point.Fantastic point. How in the world

(23:37):
where if you were if you knewthat Florida State and Alabama were doing it
and one's playing Georgia and one's playingLouisville and the impressive who the eye test
told you Alabama was playing better football? Yeah, so I understand those kids
should be bummed, and so shouldMike Norvel. They did everything. All
they did was play the schedule.Guy gets hurt. What he's supposed to
do. Quit playing the last twogames? What do they do? They
show up, play defense, rearsits head, and they win. I

(24:00):
get the argument one hundred percent, which he's also John's also right. Think
about this quarterback at Oklahoma. They'reone game away from being Big twelve champions.
What happened? Dylan Gabriel he's transferringKyle McCord, five star recruit,
the eleven and one team transfer OhioState, and they're they're a game away
from being in the final four.Yeah, there's it's unprecedented. We're going

(24:26):
it will not shock me. Imay be completely wrong. Is Dylan Gabriel
following Jeff Levy to Mississippi State?Yeah, you would think that that seems
logical, right, His offensive coordinatorleads, it's a perfect he knows that
use about me in the SEC.So, I mean it's got to be
something like that. It's so oddyou're the guy and now you're not the

(24:48):
guy because you decided to leave. It's weird to me with this, with
this college football playoff and the committee, where do they draw the line when
it comes to getting the top teamsin? But also, how are you
going to diminish teams that win likeFlorida State. Let's talk about a next
