Speaker 1 (00:12):

oh man, I was that.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
I was just looking at the website, the Facebook and
the and the Bruce Company dot com website, and I'm like,
there's like NonStop is this I know you, I know
you live for this stuff, but this is also I've
got a guess, like once we get through the holiday season,
you do one of these.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
There was a little one of those after open house, okay, little,
a little small one. Now I could just count it
by events, Okay, so I'm like six events left.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
I was like, okay, there's another one done. That's what's closer.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
I some days off I do that with road trips,
like ount down the cities as you're as you're traveling like, Hey,
we're on our way Cleveland.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
We'll get there. That's uh, it's it's so much fun.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
And we'll talk about all the great events going on
at the Bruce Company. I mentioned, of course the Middleton
Gardens at the Bruce Company, or at twenty at thirty
parm In Street. That's twenty a thirty partment Street. Great
day to get on in the website Bruce Company dot com,
Facebook and social media the Bruce Company. Of course, Lisa
Breaks comes to us from the Bruce Company, which means,
if you've got a question, but we've got answers, opportunity
to get your answer, question, answer question answered right on

(01:26):
the air. That's six three two one thirteen ten. That's
six soh eight three two one thirteen ten. Let's start
off with the forecast, though not a terrible forecast for November.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, it's a seasonal right.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
But we see that light snow, yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Wintery mix tonight, So I know it's a.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Good reminder, right, get out there and do some lights
and some other things around the yard.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Good time.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
I mean, yeah, it looks like there's a little blip
of the winter remx, so be careful driving tomorrow morning. Sure,
it's not supposed to start till I think nine ish
or something, Yeah, later in the day. Yeah, we were
going to put lights up on Thursday, but I had
a terrible COVID shot reaction, so we put that off
till yesterday. So they're not plugged in yet because that's

(02:14):
the beauty of putting them out early. Yes, you don't
have to turn them on.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeah, well what are we week and a half two
weeks out from Christmas.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
With ten days to ten days Thanksgiving?

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Goodness, So I mean we're kind of in that we always.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Turn them on Thanksgiving? Okay, Yeah, for our household, for
the store, they you know, they went on, sure, yes
a while ago. They were on for the week of
open house. Yeah, but at my house they don't go up.
They go up, but the lights get turned on Thanksgiving
and then the tree goes up Thanksgiving weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Have LED lights really helped with that?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Just about how durable they are, Like you can put
them out and just kind of leave them out.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Worry pulled out all my strengths. I'm thinking, I have
fifteen hundred lights on one string, and then I have
seven strings of five hundred.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Oh my goodness.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
So it's like a lot of lights, yes, like five
thousand lights.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, it's a couple of.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
But the beauty of it is is that I I mean,
I plug them all in. Only one didn't work. And
the reason it didn't is because they're the the control
the wire had severed.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Oh the module thing there is and.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
So that you know, but some of my lights strings
are like years old, and so I said, okay, well
there's one fifteen hundred less fewer lights the harvest. So
but they're you know, they're really durable.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, yeah, and they you mentioned too, how many lights
did you say, individual lights? Fifteen hundred, twelve hundred and thirteen?
I think five thousand, five thousand. So, and it used
to be back in the day you think, oh goodness,
what's this going to do to my electric bill?

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Like nothing, nothing at all, like nothing.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
This is like three hundred and fifty incandescent lights. I'm sorry,
five hundred because it's less than a tenth of the power.
So back in the day, I mean, how far would
five hundred lights get you? Not a lot?

Speaker 1 (04:16):
No, No, nowadays we are blessed and at the Bruce Company.
Getting on into the Bruce Company. Speaking of lights, you
guys have we.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Still we have a great selection still, so we there's
been some early some early activity on them, which is good.
Better to check those things. I keep my lights in
a separate bin and pull them out earlier than I
pull out everything else, so I can test them make
sure everything's working properly. And so we have had some

(04:45):
early activity. But we have a really good selection, especially
of the LED.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Lights controllable LEDs as well. Can you get them different?

Speaker 3 (04:53):
I have not. I've dab. I've tried a couple of
times with controllable ones, and they're just either they're awkward
to work. I mean, the first iteration came out you
had to do them on your iPad, right, and they
so either the colors are not good or something.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, there's no standing out in the cold.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
It's just so frustrating, right. I'm pretty sure that the
technology will even its way out eventually. I mean, I've
been back holiday buying for twelve years. There's been just
an enormous amount of progress in twelve years from the
first the season's four had the first one, and it

(05:43):
would you it had you had to use your iPad
or your iPhone. They weren't available for Android toes and
I said, Okay, this is not going to work because
I mean, way more people have those kinds of device
is then they have Apple devices.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
So but yeah, oh that's it's cool to think about too,
as we as we talk about the different lights and
different options and different things you can do to decorate
your home. And as we mentioned, of course great week
to do that also great week whether you're looking to
do some fill in, like maybe you have pulled out
the box and a couple of strings weren't working. Great
to get in that also great if you haven't upgraded recently,

(06:24):
maybe you were holding off. Maybe you were somebody was like,
I don't know about these, like the original ones, saying
maybe I want to give them a couple of years
tests now is the time to do that.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
I can't even get replacement lamps anymore. Oh yeah, yeah,
it's just for the for incandescence. We do carry clear
incandescent strings, okay, in fifties, I think just in fifties,
and I have a few multi incandescent, but they've become

(06:52):
really difficult to get from reputable vendors. I mean, I
know you see them at the drug store and all
over the place, but those are sort of in and
out one season kind of thing, and we don't like,
you know, if you're going to invest, you should invest
in something that's going to last longer than one season.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
What's interesting about that too?

Speaker 1 (07:09):
With with with some of those incandestine and I know
folks really liked that color, and the original thing with
LED was like they're not the same color is terrible.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
There's so much better now. Oh, you can't tell.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
The difference indistinguishable, I think is what smart people. I
think you've probably used that.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah, when when we had when they were available, we
had a barkan try and I put the incandescent within
sight of the LED and you could not tell. The
LED lights are brighter. I think that's the big difference,
is that they're brighter. And when they used the the

(07:44):
sort of you know, they all made them in the
more traditional shape lamp or they made them in the
like five mills, they were like little stubs like the
tip of your Yeah, but now the little three mills
are tiny and they're so sparkling. Love it.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Speaking of making use of those too, I know I
start tallying up. Of course, got the tree walk underway,
it's just kind of got some prelimined preliminary numbers.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Yeah, I did. I had some time on Saturday, so
I put in some of the ballots and where we
were like two sixty something, and so we did post
on Saturday afternoon the front runners as of that time.
So I'll be doing that every Saturday, so you all
can see where we're at.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Any surprises in the top three, No.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
I'm not surprised. It's not my favorite. It's beautiful, don't
get me wrong. The one that's currently somewhere over the rainbow.
It's a beautiful tree, but it's a little The tree
has a trick, and so it's a lot of the
look of it is because of the tree, right, And

(08:56):
so it's hard to get past the trick because it's
it's yeah, it's spectacular, and I'll just go ahead and
say it's upside down, yes, yes, upside down. So the
ornaments hang in a much more interesting way, right, And
they show up because they're not like hanging against the tree,
they're hanging free of the tree.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Yes.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
And we still have a lot of people who think,
I like, rigged up an upside down tree and they're
made to be that way.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Can you get do you guys have those at the
worst company.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
I have that one and if they're if somebody wants one,
I can special or special Okay, But it is not
something that we're going to stock. It's it's the engineering
of it. It's completely backwards because you know, trees have
hinges and so it all has to be it's re engineered.
So it's kind of pricey. But yeah, but I can.

(09:53):
I can. It just depends on what kind of stock
they have, but I can check if somebody is interested.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
And you can see it in person, just on the bruce.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
You think it's the prettiest.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Yeah, And then you can vote, and what happens if
you vote, you get out.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
So when you vote, so generally Skyler does the tallying,
but she was off this weekend. We once, so voting
ends on the thirtieth and then we go through the
tally and we find what is the winning tree, and
then people who chose that tree there's a random drawing

(10:28):
for one hundred dollars gift card, so it'll be just
in time for holiday shopping.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Exciting stuff. So you want to check out all the trees. Vote, vote, vote,
get into the Middleton Garden Center of the Bruce Company.
See what's going on there. Of course, great day to
get on in twenty eight thirty Partment Street. That's twenty
thirty Partment Street. Talking about a full calendar events as well.
Make sure you're following a Bruce Company dot com, Facebook
and social media as well. The Bruce Company. We'll talk
with Lisa about trees and sticks.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
I have an update on the snow chasing ohe.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
The YouTube v let's we'll get those details and we'll
take your question.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Six eight three two one thirteen ten. That's six O
eight three two one thirteen ten.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
We'll do all of that next as every Day Outdoor
Living with the Bruce Company continues right here on thirteen
ten wuib I eight twenty one thirteen ten WIBA and
every Day Outdoor Living brought to you by the Bruce
Company Online, Bruce coompany dot com. That's Bruce Company dot com,
Facebook and social media, the Bruce Company. Perfect day to
get on into the Middleton gardens under the Bruce Company.
Right at twenty eight thirty PARM Industry. That's twenty eight

(11:27):
thirty parm Industry. Talk about some of the great stuff
going on at the Bruce Company. We're gonna also talk about, uh,
the YouTube video. But speaking of you videos in general,
if folks get a chance to go to the Bruce
Companies Facebook page, I know it's there yet.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Emian of course.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Yeah, Emmy came in and shot a some surprisingly silly videos.
So we're so Linda's putting them up on our YouTube channel,
issuing a couple every week, but I'm also putting them
up on Facebook page on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Yes, and you're starring in this the most this one,
I'm not.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
I'm only in No, just the one. I'm only in
that one. I'm on the I'm on our Facebook just
enough for any one person.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
People are demanding more, Lisa, They're demanding more.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
So check that video out. You can see Lisa and
Emmy and.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Some very creative things you guys are doing with three accessories.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Check that out.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Speaking of videos, a couple of weeks ago, you mentioned,
of course, the chasing snow.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
And we had that whole sort of you know, text
message showing that because I was texting Linda. So the
way it worked was I think there were ten or
twelve companies in the Midwest who do snow removal who
were on this website where you would be voted on
to be on a video podcast of this thing called

(12:52):
snow Chasers. Snow Chasers, Yes, and so we had asked
everybody to vote and they were going to pick the
top two, and we did not have enough folks to
crack the top two unfortunately.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
But I will say, drum roll, they were so charmed
by the video that Linda and Tom and Sasha did
and all the guys in our team that were in awesome,
so they made an exception. They're they're featuring three.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Midwest area of snow removal companies and we will be
one of them.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Now, I have no.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Timeline because of course this is very dependent dependent on
mother nature.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Oh, snow matters for this.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Yeah, well you can't like clean up snow if there
is no snow to clean up. Last year we had
a dearth of snow. So let's hope this year we
have a plethora. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
It always seems to balance out.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
So as soon as it like, as soon as I
have information or there's a release, I'll let everybody know,
of course. But but we are really excited. So thank
you to everybody who voted for us, and thank you
to Linda and Tom and Sashia and all the guys
in our snow team for making that hilariously crazy.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
It's very very cool. So you want to stay tuned
for that. Of course, make sure you're following the Bruce
Company on Facebook and you.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Can go on the page and look at the video.
I think we released it back in October, okay, like
late October, so it's good. It is. It is very funny.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
It is worth a watch, and that's up at their
Facebook and social media pages. I'll speak of getting into
this physical store too, Lisa. I know, obviously we talked
about all the activities going on, all the different events.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
It's also great day.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
You know, we think about looking towards like trees and beautiful.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
Oh yeah, yes, so you've got stuff update. Yeah, so
so all of the greens from the West coast are
in so all cedar and barry, juniper and that kind
of thing, along with their reas, the fancy wreaths, the

(15:06):
amarillisarian pots, pre made containers, porch containers came in last week.
Trees were delivered on Wednesday. We have a couple more
shipments coming in this week. By the end of the
week we will have trees on the lot. Yes, Fraser's balsams,

(15:26):
and we got some canaans coming in this year.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
I don't know what which is.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
A canaan is like a weird cross looks so it's
like a it's like a cross between a Fraser and
a balsam. We haven't had them before, so we'll see
how they do grower wise, they're a little easier to
grow because they're more tolerant of our soils and hot
human summersk than Fraser firs are. So to know that

(15:51):
some of our growers are starting to sort of dabble
in that it might be easier to get bigger trees
in the future that are canaans of opposed to Frasers.
And that's c A N A A and yes, yes,
all of the plane balsam and a lot of the
Fraser Fraser reason garland. That stuff will be in later

(16:13):
this week as well.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
I'm looking I just looked it up. Very pretty tree.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
It is a pretty Tree's a pretty tree.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Give and then by the way, the time of the year.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
I don't know about you, when you have company over,
you're always looking for something to talk about.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Get yourself a cane and fur.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
You've got a conversation right there, let's start this.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
I like that.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
I thought it was a silly.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
So those okay, And for folks who don't know, trees
come in locally, and then you've.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
Got they're like cigars. They're stacked on the truck, yes
and so yeah, and then they we put them in piles,
sorted out, and then they have to be prepped, so
they open them up, they shake them loose, they kind
of look at them to make sure that they're as
perfect as possible. Then they price them and bring them up.

(17:08):
So that's a process.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
Do they ever find any unique and exotic critters living
in said said furs.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
We have. I don't think we have ever had a creature,
not like remember a few years ago in that little
owl made it all the way to New York for
the Rockefeller Tree for lot things. Yeah, no, that has
not happened to us. Sometimes when we get trucks from
the West Coast or from Florida, they'll be like slugs
on the walls of the stuff. Sometimes we have gotten

(17:35):
a random lizard on a house plant.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
I would love to take that. If you guys ever
get one, I'll let you know. I need I need
an office mates, come run it over there. I'll pick
up some nice, nice shrubbery for it.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
And yeah, well we've never had anything leap out, nothing
or flyout so far.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Definitely.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
H While we talked to about just about getting ready
for the tree and decorate the tree. I know ornaments
have been have been flying off the show.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
They have been, and.

Speaker 3 (18:04):
We're doing some weekly specials.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
Oh really, yes, So.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
The way to know, I mean, you can always come
in the store. They start on Friday and run through Wednesday.
So if you're in the store there's a sign, you know,
there'll be signs all over this week all on Friday.
We started puzzles, so all of our really cool boxed
puzzles are twenty percent off. They make great gifts. I
just finished a white Mountain puzzle. It's like vintage movies.

(18:37):
Just finished it up yesterday. It's been on my puzzle
board for a few weeks. So they're a great activity.
I find it very like calming to work on a puzzle,
but a great thing to do with family. So those
are twenty percent off through Wednesday. But you can find
out about the sales either on our Facebook page because

(18:57):
we will release that on Friday morning, or if you
subscribe to our e newsletter, yes, then you can get
that stuff that those go out on Thursday. So it's
really easy to subscribe for the newsletter. You can just
go to our website and just click the box and
sign up for the newsletter. When you're in the store,

(19:18):
you can make sure that if you're in our system
already in our customer database, that your emails attached to
your record, or you can when you shop, you and
the cashier says have you shopped with us before? Are
you in our database? And instead of saying no, you
can just say yes, He'll put you in there. I

(19:40):
will say we. You know, we send out at the
at the peak part of the season, like in early spring,
you might get two e blasts a week because we're
trying to tell you things, but for the most part,
it's one newsletter every other week.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Yeah, and it's really nice as you mentioned get great information.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
There's a lot of information. There's calendar are always on
that EVE newsletter, a couple of blogs about what you
can be doing in your gardening or things that you
know we want you to know, Advanced notice of sales.
There's always a video on there. We always put the
doggo of the week from thatches on there.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
So, yeah, are the doggos coming by anytime soon? Do
we have?

Speaker 3 (20:19):
The Doggos will be by on the thirtieth Sunday from
noon until two.

Speaker 2 (20:28):
Twelve to two. Yes, perfect.

Speaker 1 (20:33):
Yeah, ever really loves puppies. Everyone loves seeing the dogs.
I think they bring they bring life and spirited And
you mentioned the newsletter. I think I signed up in
the store. But as you mentioned, there's a couple of
different ways to do just that great day to get
on into the Middleton Garden Center of the Bruce Company
mentioned the great special going on right now with puzzles.
They've always got great, unique gifts, whether it is of
the green variety or of the very.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
Very cool stuff in the boutique.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Yeah, it's a beautiful place and I say it every year,
and I try to say it at many times because
as a guy who is not always great about finding
the perfect gift, one of the things I like about
the Bruce Company there's plenty of folks to help. And
you know that if you get somebody, specially in your life,
a gift from the Bruce Company, it's going to be special,
it's going to be unique, It's not going to be
something that they've seen a million times before. It's going

(21:17):
to be something really cool.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
And if you are the person that can't figure out
what to get or or you're afraid to do that,
our gift card specialists, right, So for every fifty dollars
gift card you purchase, you're going to get an extra
ten as a Happy Holidays from us. So take advantage
of that too. You can do that online or in store,
and that's going to run through the twenty fourth of December.

Speaker 2 (21:39):
How fantastic is that?

Speaker 1 (21:41):
And give it to somebody of the extra or keep.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
It for yourself.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
Yeah, they probably deserve it.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
Yeah, the whole Lisa, it's always too much fun. You
enjoy this great day, of course, Lisa comes this from
the Bruce Company online, Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce
Company dot com, Facebook and social media, the Bruce Company.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
