the Bruce Company. Great day to get on into the
Middleton Garden Center of the Bruce Company. Twenty eight thirty
Parmenter Street. That's twenty eight to thirty Parmenter Street. Joining

(00:21):
us at study this morning is Lisa Briggs from the
Bruce Company.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Lisa, how you doing today?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
I'm good? How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:27):
I'm doing absolutely fantastic and We've got so much cool
stuff to talk about. We've also got phone lines if
folks have questions. Oh I love getting questions and calls
and seeing.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
What other people know. You have questions, Oh, of course
they do.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
You gotta have questions, and I'd love to hear from
you this morning. You've probably got a cell phone too,
which makes it real convenient. Six oh eight three two
one thirteen ten. That's six oh eight three two one
thirteen ten gets you right on the air with Lisa
Briggs from the Bruce Company, and real quick before we
get to all the fun stuff we're talking about this week.
Earlier on the program, the discussion came up about leaves

(01:01):
and whether to leave or not to leave the leaves
that may be out there. I know we've got a
little snow cover still, but I'm looking at them.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
I think for my neighborhood, it's final pick up this week. Yeah,
so I'm compromising.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
So you shouldn't leave them on your lawn, okay, because
it can create some diseases depending on the kind of
leaves that you have, a lot of leaves will pack down,
like especially if you have maples and there's you can
get some fungal diseases that sort of can harbor over
the winter and then have some damage to your lawn.

(01:40):
I am not leaving them on my rocky areas or
my paths or sidewalks because again, they get wet, they
get slippery, it's difficult to keep the pavement clear. I
did this year have Harvey leave them in the garden beds.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Okay for a nice mold in the spring.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Well, there's that, but also there are a lot of
pollinating insects that kind of over winter in leaf litter,
so it's good to leave that. So that's that's the
route I took. But of course I don't have any lawns.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
So what about if you've got like like a nice
mulchion more that can really chop those suckers up? Could
you just ride over if obviously, if it's if it's
like a blanket, you don't want to.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
I would still say, I mean, you know, I would
still say, don't leave it in your lawn. It's not
you're not going to get it small enough where it's
going to be able to decompose enough to get into
the law, you know, into the ground.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Sure, So yeah, okay, so you can, yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
So clean up your hard surfaces and you know, because
things like oak leaves or you can stain, clean up
your hard surfaces, rake it off your lawn. But if
you have wild areas or you want to leave it
in your car garden beds to sort of partially decompose
and then just top dress it with mulch next spring,
go for it.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
If you've got kiddos and grand kiddos as well, they
will definitely appreciate you taking care of the leaves, because
there is nothing worse than when you're making a snowman
and all of a sudden there's like a bunch of
leaves mixed in with your snowballs that you're using to make,
said snowmen.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
I didn't think of that, But I would also say
the kiddos like to jump in the piles of leaves
that you create, So there's that as well.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
They sure they sure do. I was gonna speaking of.
I know.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
One of the issues too with kind of leaving those
leaves down there is that kind of create a matt
I know folks that don't do kind of like a
shorter cut at the on their lawn. That also I've
seen where it like kind of gets really matted down.
And should we be thinking about obviously again we got
snow on the kind.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Of snuck up up.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
I think, you know, I think that that everybody sort
of put their lawn mowers away for now, so I
think that's a moot.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Man.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, it's a non issue.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Now, what about for next year, Lisa?

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Should I be mowing short or just before the snowfall
or leave it as is?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Or what's the do we have? Is there any guidance
on rating?

Speaker 3 (04:08):
You know, I don't know. Again, I have no lawn.
I don't know. I'd like to mow higher.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Okay, Yeah, I don't think.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
That mowing two and a half three inches is going
to create enough of grass kind of laying down in
matting over okay. And you know my feelings on that
whole may thing.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
I do know your feelings on that on may thing.
Who knew such a thing would be controversial, but it
sure is. Yeah, it's it is an interesting I.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Mean, there's been some studies. It takes your lawn a
long time to recover from that growing to six or
eight inches high and then whacking it back to two
inches at the end of a Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I will say seeing it from for it from another
angle on the on the city stuff, Oh oh, it
does feel like people that do it are doing it
not for the pollinators or the just doing it because
they didn't want to get off there there took us.
Perhaps that's my opinion and expressed by me.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yes, let's talk about some really really fun stuff over
the weekend. Oh my goodness, Lisa as always so busy
at the Star. Hoppin the kids call it Hoppin's happen?

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Is that what they're saying now?

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Maybe six or seven if you're like ten the Bruce Company,
it's hoppin'.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah. It was our open house weekend, so official kickoff
to the season. We had a lot going on. Ladies
Night raised a bunch of money for Fetch with the Raffle,
and then we had all kinds of things going on
throughout the weekend. A lot of things came in last

(05:50):
week that people have been waiting for. So we have
greens from the West Coast, so some really lovely reads,
a little bit of garland, all those exotic greens, you know,
cedar and and that buried juniprin, that kind of thing.
We also got in dogwood and willow branches, as well

(06:15):
as winter berry from from our friends. I cannot remember
the name of the company. They're and soldiers grow, though
they're super cool. They just grow woody plants for cuts.
So if you're ready to begin flipping your pots from
if you went if you had summer and you didn't

(06:36):
do fall, you can go straight into winter. Other greens
from our local sources are due in this week. Also,
trees will be delivered this week, but we won't see
them on the lot till next week. They have to
be prepped and priced and all that kind of thing.

(06:57):
Paper whites finally, came in, so that's been a thing.
We've got amaryllis no points out us till later this week, okay,
but some holiday plants have come in. We've got a
good supply of holiday cactus. We have some cyclomen yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Uh, the three Prize peas which are prepped, primped and
perfected for the Christmas trees and the trees.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
That go out. People don't.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
That's a big process even before they get to the
Bruce Company. I remember years we're talking with you.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
About the primping and prepping happens at the farm and
then the perfecting I guess happens here and.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Pricing and I know the foes.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah, so they usually do their sharing July ishm. That's
when you when the trees get shared because they're not
harvesting everything. Our folks go up Midcober, Okay to look
for special order trees. We do a good business and

(08:08):
special ordering, and as bigger trees have become scarcer, it's
really a good idea if you want a bigger tree,
to do a special order. So we make sure that
we source what everybody is looking for. If you haven't
done that yet, you know, we'll do our best to
help you out, but when you come in, give your

(08:28):
name to the plant desk, give your contact information so
we can send you a letter next year, because those
letters go out in early to mid August, okay, and
then there's a you know, there's a deadline at the
end of September because they, like I said, they go
up in October to look for the trees.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
How does that Because I live in like the most
standard of houses, your basic three bedroom ranch, so I
don't I don't get a super tall tree for parts
that are and how do those get from the Bruce
company to the to the houses?

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Is that is?

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Well, you can take it yourself. Of course, we'll put it,
you know, we'll secure it to your vehicle whatever it is.
And every once in a while somebody comes in with
like a teeny tiny car and wants a ten foot tree.
And you know, we do use common sense. We can't.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, we're just people and it's.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Just rope, right, Yeah, But we do offer a delivery service,
so we can deliver the tree to your door. We
also offer a setup service, so you we come, you
have your stand, We prep the tree for your stand,
they take it inside, they secure it, make it straight,
you sign off on it. We're good to go, and

(09:37):
then off they go to the next house.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
How cool is that?

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Yeah, I think two of the image of the of
the giant tree on a little you go.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
It's very cute in like commercials or yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
We're on a Christmas organment. I always have a Christmas orban.
It's like this little tiny volkswagon right with this massive
tree on it. That is not a safe situation. Please
bring in appropriate culture. Tchoo tree.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
This is fantastic.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
If you've got a question for Lisa, we'd love to
have you get on the air this morning six eight
three two one thirteen ten. That's six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. We'll get you right on the air.
Lisa breaks from the Bruce Company online Brucecompany dot com.
That's Bruce Company dot com, Facebook and social media, the
Bruce Company.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
It's a great day to get on into the Middleton
Gardens under the Bruce Company. Can't miss. I'm right at.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Twenty eight to thirty param inter Street. That's twenty at
thirty parm inter Street. And speaking of trees, you need
some lights for some trees and some other things.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
Yes, and yeah, and this is I'm looking at the
forecast for this week, and it's chilly the next couple days,
but then it gets into the fifties. Hi, Saturday, I
have sixty three. Perfect day to put your lights out.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yes, seriously, yeah, it's and it's it's more comfortable.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
It's more comfortable, it's safer. The ladder is not slippery,
the wind is not blowing you off. Your fingers are
not like like talons. The cords are flexible.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Yes, oh, it's just so right.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
Now take your lights out, check them. Make sure you
have what you need to do the job that you
want to do. If you don't have lights, so you're
thinking about updating, come to the Garden Center. They're twenty
percent off through through Wednesday as a part of our
Give What Matters. So every Friday there's a new special

(11:22):
for the coming week, and on last week it kicked
off its lights, so you can save twenty percent on
all of our light strings. And so it's a perfect
time to come in and look at the new technology
and we can talk you through the process. We have
a few incandescence, just the clear and multi okay, because

(11:47):
mostly everybody's switching over an LED. A lot of places
don't even of our vendors don't even sell in condescence anymore.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
And for people that don't, I mean the Brust company.
You guys worked really hard when you started offering LEDs,
which are amazing technology. Yes, we all know kind of
those original those first Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
First they came out and they were really really blue.
They were kind of weird and creepy, and then they
went the opposite direction and they were so yellow that
nobody could stand it. Now, I think you'd be hard
pressed to put a clear incandescent and a warm white LED,
you know, next to one another and tell the difference.

(12:24):
The lamp changes and LED or incandescent light just kind
of goes back and forth like a flare, but in
LED like tracks, it like strobes as you move it.
So that's how you can tell what you have. If
you're not sure what you have, kind of wave it
around and if it's a solid arc of light, it's

(12:44):
an incandescent. And if it kind of staggers like whatever
I'm doing a hand gesture, which none of you couldn't see,
then you know it's not there's a noise that.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Goes with it. It is.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Yeah, like when you pick up the LEDs and if
you move around like you'll see because they're an LED
actually is flickering obviously very fast. But yes, unless you
move it, you don't really notice an move it, Like
oh my goodness. They're like dashes through the air.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yes, yes, And so I mean way less energy, like
less than a tenth of a percent of what what
an incandescent lamp uses. They don't heat up at all,
so you don't have any worries about about lamps overheating
or fires. They just don't heat up with a dry tree.

(13:35):
They last way way longer. We've got some LED lights
hanging from the ceiling of the garden Center in the
back of the store that have been up for like
six years. They're on every day, every hour that the
store is open.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
They are now pretty indestructible. The color is really good.
They're brighter. I really like. Now they have the what
they call the three mill bulbs. They used to a
lot of places made them look like the old twiggle lights.
They called it an Italian bulb like along with a
little point. And then they came out with those stubby.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
Ones, the button looking ones.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
But now they're like tiny, they're like the size of
like a like a pearl topped pin like a and
they're small and they're they're so they're they're bright, but
it's like a little pinpoint of light. It's really lovely.
And so there are lots of them on the trees

(14:34):
like that, like a thousand. We I lit a tree
with three thousand.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
Are you serious?

Speaker 3 (14:38):
I'm serious.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
We're gonna have to talk about some of your trees
this week, and so much stuff to cover with Lisa
this morning. Great opportunity. Also, we've got a line open
for you if you've got a question anything inside the house,
outside the house, maybe in thinking about making that switch
over to LED or looking to upgrade your LED's. If
you've got questions, we've got answers. Love to have you
join us this morning. I do just give us rank
six So eight three two one thirteen ten. That's six

Great day to get on into the Middleton Garden Center

(15:56):
right at twenty eight thirty parm Inter Street. That's twenty
thirty Partment Street. Again, phone lines are open for you
this morning six eight three two one thirteen ten. At
six o' eight three two one thirteen ten. Real quick, guy,
we'll talk a little bit more about some of the
upcoming events, but just kind of looking back. Did I
see you guys had did you have the Icelandic they were?

Speaker 3 (16:13):
They came yesterday?

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Oh my goodness, did they do Did they come through
the store?

Speaker 3 (16:17):
Yeah? Twice?

Speaker 2 (16:18):
There's a video on check that out. I saw a
photo of one. I got to check the video.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
They had it. They had an encounter with the Carollers.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
Oh did that's uh.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
Capital City Theater meet.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
I am good job, Yeah that is I love to
definitely have to have to check that out. So as
we get into this season too, I know we talked
about some of the great specials going on to the
Bruce Company. Of course this past weekend kicked off the
holiday season. Now that we're into the holiday season, their
stuff just popping all the time at the Bruce Company,
isn't there.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
Yes, there are lots of things on our events page,
so go check that out. There's still some spaces in
a couple of the later containers workshops. We've got Santa coming,
a family photo Day is Saturday, and of course the
reindeer will be there on the fourteenth, Yes, on the fourteenth,

(17:13):
from noon to two well noon.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
To two pm, I know, and the we're driving back
from Minnesota yesterday and Christmas music came on at.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
The pre Christmas music is on at the store.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
We've been doing this too long. You're like a mind
reader least, so you know exactly what it's got.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
Except we used to do have it on for open
house and then turn it like then have it like
a fifty to fifty mix. But it's just easier to
just turn it on. Also this year, you know, we
always do the gift card promotion. Yeah, so you buy
a fifty dollars gift card, you get ten dollars on
us for yourself, for yourself for to pad the gift

(17:48):
card that you're giving. So you buy fifty dollars, you're
gonna get sixty. You buy one hundred dollars of the
gift cards, you get one hundred and twenty. Man, I
like it, and we're gonnax. We always again do that
for open house and then turn it off and then
start it again. I'm like ready, but we're going through
the month. So it's a really good opportunity to get

(18:10):
some really excellent gift cards for somebody who is difficult
to shop for yes, because if they're a gardener, perfect place, right,
they'll get the plants that they want. They can hold
it till spring. If they love Christmas again, perfect place.
There's like a thousand Christmas things there, and just so
many other things. The boutique house plants, you know, garden

(18:33):
are all that, just everything.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
So so if I were to buy five hundred dollars
in gift cards, I would get a fifty dollars one
that I could just put in my pocket and come
back late.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
Well, for five hundred you would.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Get oh wait, no, what one hundred? Oh wait yeah,
my math is wrong there.

Speaker 3 (18:50):
You would get an extra hundred. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
I was thinking, Oh, I like the way that sounds right.

Speaker 1 (18:55):
Yeah, I know you're you're right, yeah, yeah, it's it's
ten for every fifty, not ten forever. Wow, Lisa, yea,
because are kind of giving away the story. It's amazing.
So you got to get in and pick those up.
And you mentioned too, folks that are difficult to shop for.
And I know, like anybody that has like a really
strong passion, you get kind of particular about your tools and.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
Things you know, you think about at work. You're very particular.
So what a great gift those are there.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
Maybe somebody is really explicit about what they want. Yeah,
but some people are not. They're particular, but they just
can't articulate that sure always so yes, So it's a
great way to so, you know, and you could get
a little something and then throw a gift card in there.

Speaker 2 (19:38):
That's so cool.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
And the other thing too, is is for those those
folks in your life that you want to get something great.
I know you mentioned the botique in other areas of
the Bruce Company. It's fun to do that too. It's
also you know, you think about getting like a like
a little gift and then like gift card, and you know,
just kind of putting these little package I like.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
To put little like baskets or gift bags together with
you know, somebody as a gardener or they like to cook.
Because we've got all kinds of things in the boutique
for you know, lovely kitchen towels, cool kitchen tools, and
so whatever interest somebody has. It's nice to put together

(20:16):
some things because one of them is bound to be
the perfect thing. But it's in and amongst a plethora
of things. Doesn't want a plethora of.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Things, No, everybody, And I will I will put the
warning out is it seems the time from Halloween to
Christmas gone in a flash.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
So it does, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Yeah, as we.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
Talked this morning, you're thinking, yeah, I got time, I
got time. You don't have as much time as you think.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
Thanksgiving is in like yeah, half weeks.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
Yes, exactly, So everything's about to fly by, which means
today is the day.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Get on in.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
Yeah, get that, Just start checking boxes and then when
you get home tonight you can sit down, listen to
some smiths toon, drink some egg nogs.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
Turn on the Hallmark channel. I hear the Christmas movies
have been on for a few weeks.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Yes, well that's that is awesome.

Speaker 1 (21:08):
And speaking of kind of like you know, for I
know a lot of folks, Christmas tradition is how Hallmark
movies are. The things I know for a lot of
folks too. Is getting in and checking out the different
trees that are decorated.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
The tree walk started Wednesday, and there are a couple
of looks not up yet because there one of them
is all about Point Settis and since they're not here yet,
we can't really build it. But all of the decorated
trees are up nice.

Speaker 2 (21:31):
How many did you do this year?

Speaker 3 (21:33):
Twenty two ish? I think they're thirty. They're like thirty
three stops on the walk. Okay, not all of them
are have a decorated tree. Okay, but we decided to
go kind of through other parts of the store. So
there's one out under the atrium. Oh, and then there
are a couple in the greenery area that are not

(21:55):
done yet, and then the rest of the store. So
and you know, you pick your favorites or ballots available
at the plant dusk and then Skyler has this amazing
spreadsheet that she has and she logs all of the votes.

(22:16):
When the winning tree is chosen, then we draw from
the people who that was their pick, and then we
randomly draw from that pool and you win one hundred
dollars gift card and that is awarded on December first. Yeah,
so lots of time to spend it for presence or yourself.

(22:39):
We also first week of the Bracket Challenge will be
the winner of last The winners for last week we'll
be announced today this afternoon. And it was Sprits Cookies
versus Stained Glass Cookies, and then it was ice sugar
cookie these versus gingerbread men. And so the quarterfinal or

(23:04):
the quarterfinals were sprits cookies versus ice sugar cookies. So
we'll announce that winner, and then the next round starts
today as well.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
Oh that's gonna be fantastic. So you gotta get on,
get on the go.

Speaker 3 (23:17):
On to Facebook. It's really fun. We're gonna we're gonna
pick the number one Christmas treats. So there are cookies,
there are fancy things like like torts and that kind
of thing, and then also those iconic Christmas breads.

Speaker 1 (23:35):
You watch the British baking show you he said the box, Yes,
I do.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
You were just were just wrapped up last.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Week, did it?

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Because they like go tarts and kurds. Everything's got a curd.
I don't know what occurred.

Speaker 3 (23:50):
Is a curd is a It's got an egg bass
egg and egg yolk and sugar base and then butter
and then juice of the fruit. And it's usually citrus
curR like lemon is super popular. I love lemon curd.
Have you ever had a card you going delicious?

Speaker 2 (24:09):
I feel like I should. If I haven't, I really.

Speaker 3 (24:12):

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
