For three of the tie background. No good.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Now, here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Aways.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Welcome into the j and K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick bruce Witz.
The Badgers take care of business and improved a four
and zero to start the season with a ninety four
sixty nine win over SIU Edwardsville. We invite you to
join the conversation with us on the hotline six eight

(00:46):
three two one thirteen ten. That's the number two call.
In another beatdown in non conference play by Wisconsin. The
Badgers are taking advantage of this early part of the
schedule to find their rhythm to get into a groove.
It's a little closer than expected through the first half
with SIUI hanging around, but ultimately the Badgers were too much,

(01:06):
going on a sixteen to zero run early in the
second half. The combination of John Blackwell and Nick Boyd
was too much and Nick this offense is humming along now,
reaching the nineties in three of their first four games.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, they're cooking, man.

Speaker 5 (01:20):
And I think you heard it from Charlie Wills tonight
that this is an offense specifically the first five, the
starters that are gelling really well together. They score seventy
eight as a starting group. That's a hell of a
lot of an output for that team. So you outlook
and see what their outlook is moving forward based off
of that, and you consider what they are, I can't

(01:44):
believe that they have kind of reset it and still
maintained the level of production that they were at last
year offensively, maybe even better. I know that we're early
and they've played maybe lesser competition, but it feels like
this is going to be a group that's everything that
last year's team was offense. It's about the defensive end
and trying to share that thing up to make sure

(02:04):
that they're going to be a competitor in the Big Ten,
let alone all of college basketball.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
You mean to tell me SIU Edwardsville isn't the most
elite of elite competition we're going up against from the
OVC Conference.

Speaker 6 (02:17):
Yeah, yeah, it's, but not.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
The level of competition that they'll face in the night
ten for sure.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
No, But I mean they were able to play the
Badger's pretty tough there in that first half. Badger's defense
was a little bit lacking. Greg Gard you Coutel was
a little upset with that. So they're gonna be going
to the film room and they're gonna be trying to
work on those things ahead of their next game coming
up against BYU on Friday. So that's at least still

(02:44):
some some teachable moments, still some some more for this
team to get themselves together. But even though they had
those struggles and those lapses there defensively, offensively, they did
not turn the ball over just four turnovers in this game,
and and obviously keeping turnovers to a minimum that has
been a staple at Wisconsin, that has been what they

(03:05):
preach going back years and years, going back to the
bow Ryan era. That has just been a staple of
this program, and they were able to do it incredibly
well here tonight. We'll talk with Nick Ghson about that
a little later on in the program when he joins
us after Greg guards and the players press conferences there
down in the bowels of the Coal Center. But keeping

(03:26):
the ball not turning it over, Nick. That's another key
to success for Wisconsin always has been, and being able
to keep at a minimum to just those four turnovers
in this game, that is key. That is what helped
them to pull away here in the early part of
the second half.

Speaker 5 (03:43):
Yeah, you know the coach guard is impressed and satisfied
by that. You're essentially giving up one turnover per ten
minutes of game action.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
That's exactly how it breaks down.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
So yeah, you'll take that, especially after what you saw
last time out fifteen turnovers against Ball State. To cut
it back by eleven is pretty impressive for sure. And
the performances from the guards tonight. You look at John
Blackwell and Nick Boyd, they combined for forty six points.
You just have to look at those two as igniters

(04:13):
for this offense. And Blackwell in particular puts up an
easy twenty four on six of eleven shooting, including five
of six from deep. This guy's as legit as it gets.
He's gonna be a contender, in my opinion, for National
Player of the Year if he keeps it up here
in Big ten action. And I'm just satisfied that we
get to look at another elite elite scorer for a

(04:35):
third straight season. I'll give aj stoher the benefit of
the doubt, but John Todjay absolute stud last year in
Blackwell with another year of progression as a player, seems
to be taking the next step here.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
And I thought last year was pretty darn great.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Yeah, it's incredible. It's incredible how Greg Guard is able
to continue to do this. And Greg Guard does not
get near enough credit nationally or just in general for
the work that he has done to you know, not
only in the transfer portal, but also just developing players,
getting good, good guys in good Wisconsin program guys in there.

(05:12):
It's remarkable year in year out, even when you lose
a guy like John tom Jay, who you know, he thought,
oh man, what a diamond in the rough. To be
able to find him bring him in, you get incredibly lucky, almost,
it feels like, to find him and get the production
that he brought. But then to do it again the
next year with Nick Boyd coming in, seeing John Blackwell
take that extra step. And as you mentioned, aj Store,

(05:35):
absolutely he was an elite scorer. You know, the wholeness
of his game maybe left a little bit to be desired,
and also his ability to stay maybe in one place
for more than a year left a little bit to
be desired, but still his ability to find those top scores,
and even before that Johnny Davis was an elite scorer
as well. So just year in, year out, having some

(05:56):
top scorer on this team in this program and being
able to fight them in the transfer portal. As John
Rosstein calls him, he's a sound assassin, but great guard.
You absolutely nailed it, Nick. He does not get near
enough credit for what he's been able to do building
this roster.

Speaker 5 (06:12):
And you look at what they've done this season in particular,
right you highlighted and I have as well. The more
prominent transfer editions over the last couple of years, Tanjay
and Store stick out because of the point production. But
you also have to give credit where credit's due. Kamara
McGee was a transfer edition and his impact on this
program was substantial. Max Klesbitt, they get him from Wafford

(06:34):
obviously a star here, a name, a fixture of this
program for a series of years, finding the right guys
building around them, whether it's for one year, for four years,
and this year now you got a series of transfers
three new starters, and they're jeling as well as I
think we've seen in offense jail this early in the season.
So absolute kudos to the program first and foremost for

(06:56):
being one that players want to come and play for.
Head coach Greg Gard makes it the program that people
want to come and play for, and his staff for
building this roster and preparing them this early in the
season to look as strong as they have with three
new transfer starters, not just three new starters, but guys
who weren't part of this program just last year.

Speaker 4 (07:16):
Yeah, and this is where I mean that extra work,
and Guard has talked about it a little bit about
changing things up at practice, trying to get them to
jail faster. Having the extra exhibition game I think also
helped a little bit this year, but still it's one
extra game that they had before the regular season started.
And typically we've seen in recent years, Nick and we've
talked about this quite a bit, how it generally takes

(07:39):
them until about these holiday tournaments around Thanksgiving that they're
going to have coming up in a little bit. It
typically takes them until around then to finally gel find
their stride and really get things clicking offensively. But this year,
it's been completely different. They've been able to gel fairly
quickly here even before then and being able to see
if that cont of time.

Speaker 7 (07:59):
Now.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
Granted it is partly the competition that they're facing Campbell,
NIU Ball State and SIU Edwardsville isn't exactly Murderer's row.
It's not exactly a gauntlet that they have to go through,
but still to be able to have it to Joe
that you even see some of those struggles against teams
like that in the past, but they haven't had that
this year. And even when they had maybe those defensive

(08:21):
defensive lapses in the first half, they still put up
forty eight in the first half. I mean, the offense
is just incredible.

Speaker 5 (08:30):
It's the elite, and I think that it's going to
be one of the best in the Big Ten this season.
Once again, it's about finishing games, playing your competition now
to their standard. I think that Wisconsin has played down
at times to these individual teams they've played so far
this year. I don't think that's with intent. They don't
come in planning, hey we're gonna make this a close game.
We're gonna allow them to stay close. But it's human nature.

(08:51):
You have that sense of urgency when you're playing a
program that will be in March madness, that will be
contending for their respective COMPS title. And BYU is everything
in that above. They are a national contender, they have
the number one recruit in the country this year, They've
built out a roster that's gonna compete to win the
Big Twelve. This is a program that you can't sleep on,

(09:14):
and we know that from last season, and they're gonna
have an opportunity to get some revenge on Friday. And
I think that this is a team that can absolutely
handle the challenge of BYU. These first four games were
an opportunity to see what we've thought of them before
facing BYU, and all I've seen so far is a

(09:34):
team that can definitely hang with the BYU coming up
on Friday.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Yeah, they absolutely can, but we will find out on
the court on Friday when they face each other, and
you have that opportunity for revenge would be sweet. And
also being out there in Utah, as Greg Gark kind
of talked about a little bit too in his conversation
with Matt Leape and Charlie Wills after the game, which
well here again later on in the program here in
case you missed it, he's talking about, you know, the

(10:01):
fact that they're gonna be out there in Utahn. They're
going to see their old friends Max Klesmitt and John
Tanjay out there with the g League Utah Jazz. They're
they're hanging out on that team, and the Badgers are
gonna go and check on their old boys and watch
them playing a game. So that's gonna be very fun
and I'm excited for that for those guys as well.

(10:22):
But Wisconsin, they got a big game of their own
coming up here on Friday against BYU. But you take
care of business tonight against SIU Edwardsville. That's exactly what
you needed. Twenty five point victory, ninety four sixty nine.
So coming up, we're gonna have nick osin from twenty
four to seven Sports a little bit later on in
the show. But also on the other side, we're gonna

(10:43):
be getting too fun facts with Dave and oh boy.

Speaker 6 (10:47):
The facts certainly are fun.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
We're going a little bit into the into the history
books here with this one, So I'm very excited for
that that's coming up. On the other side, Badgers win
ninety four to sixty nine Ober SIU Edwardsville.

Speaker 6 (11:00):
Keep it right here.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
This is a Jank Scuredy Solutions basketball postgame show.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Inside Feed. Want it Thomas knocked away rap turnover. Here's
Boyd with Baker back Boyd little Euro step of the
late puts it up and in a little batcand flip
from low on the right.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
Welcome back to the jan K Security Solutions basketball postgame show.
Jay and Ksecurity Solutions from home theaters to smart lighting
to a universal home control go online to jksecurity dot com.
Dave Gasper here with you along with Nick Brucewitz as
the Badgers get a ninety four to sixty nine win
over Siue. As their non conference play continues, the Badger's

(11:48):
improved two four and oh on the regular season. They're
averaging ninety three point three points per game. The offense
has just been elite. It's been fantastic throughout this entire
first part of the season. John Blackwell the leading scorer
here tonight with twenty four points on six of eleven shooting.
Nick Boyd not far behind him with twenty two points

(12:09):
six of thirteen from the field. Austin Rapp added fifteen
points as well. Those are your double digit scores for
the Badgers. Nolan Winter added nine, Andrew Roady with eight
from the starting lineup, and Nick this group just another
fantastic output. Rody and Winter didn't have the biggest numbers

(12:31):
here tonight.

Speaker 6 (12:32):
Austin Rapp had a little.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Bit of a breakout here, him hitting three three pointers
in this game, including a couple of big shots there
during the sixteen to zero run in the early part
of the second half.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (12:46):
I think that this is a production that you should
be able to expect from a guy like him this season,
and I think it is only going to get better
moving forward.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
Yeah, I think so as well as he's kind of
trying to get himself situated here the offense, Roady and
rap haven't quite put out the you know, explosive numbers
like Nick Boyd has in the early part of the
season here, but there's they've still been very effective out
there on the court for the Badgers. There was an
interesting point here in this game, Nick, where Greg Guard

(13:16):
issued his first challenge on a ball out of bounds.
This is kind of a new rule this year. The
way you know it used to be, they would review
almost every single out of bounds decision. Now it's got
to be a coach's challenged. Greg Guard, it seemed like
wanted to, you know, try and get a challenge in
here during one of these non conference games prior to

(13:38):
the tough part of the tough part of the non
conference schedule with BYU coming up, and Providence and and
Florida and all of them coming up. Wanted to get
it in here. The call was upheld, but it was
a very kind of tough play to kind of view.
What was your take on Greg Guard trying to get
that challenge in there.

Speaker 5 (13:57):
I think that he just wanted to get it off.
Matt referenced it many times that he had talked to
Guardo earlier in the season and Guard wanted to try
the challenge, wanted to get the first one over with
and get it done. And he tried it, and there
were a lot of smiles around the court after the
failure because you know, it felt like JENNICKI egdamon, do it,

(14:19):
do it, do it, do it? And then it failed.
So I think the challenge is important. I think that
it's gonna help de side critical moments that would have
potentially gone the opposite direction. In so far, I guess
he's over one, So he's gonna try and get another
shot up I'm sure later down the road this year
and get back in the win column in terms of challenges.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
Yeah, falling to ohen one on the conference challenges not
a great start for Greg Guard's record there. But yeah, again,
it's more just kind of about getting it in. They're
up twenty at the time anyways, so it wasn't exactly
being that worried about the timing of it, but just
kind of see, Okay, what does the system look like?
What are they necessarily looking for? Is this something that

(14:58):
we could challenge and win in the future. When it's
kind of slapped out of his hand, you can't really
tell if a bounced off his leg or not. So yeah,
just kind of a nice, little interesting moment. But I
think it will speed up the end of games rather
than rather than rate waiting around for twenty minutes for
the final two minutes of the game. So I think
that is gonna be gonna be nice to see and

(15:19):
should make things a lot more fun as we go
along here at the end of the games. And that means,
of course, it is time for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 6 (15:27):
Hey, have you ever heard me here's the term fun fact.
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fight. You a fun fact I.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
Do first time in history this has happened that eight games,
five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists.

Speaker 6 (15:44):
Spent a long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
The fun out here, This game's fun. Okay, I don't
know if that fact is fun?

Speaker 7 (15:51):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Are you fired up?

Speaker 6 (15:52):
I'm up for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
All Right.

Speaker 4 (15:58):
The facts are always more fun after I'll win, And
oh my goodness, they are fun today. Got several fun
facts here to go through, and we're going a little
bit into the history books. And first of all, here
I want to provide updates on the chase for a thousand.
Andrew Roady is now eighteen points shy of a thousand

(16:22):
in his career. He had eight points here tonight, so
he is closing in, you know, after all of his
transfers coming around, closing in on one thousand for his career.
John Blackwell also closing in on it and getting all
of his points as a Wisconsin Badger, but with his
twenty four points tonight, he puts quite a big dent
into his total. He now has sixty seven more points

(16:47):
to go to reach one thousand for his career.

Speaker 6 (16:51):
I'm sure all the kids will love that.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
Yeah, I will.

Speaker 5 (16:55):
I will anticipate a lot of celebration in both instance.
Is getting to a thousand points is a unique moment
throughout your college career, Rodyo'll get there first.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
But I think that that just tells you got guys
here on.

Speaker 5 (17:11):
This program that have a lot of experience in college basketball.
And although last year's team was very senior heavy, this
year's team is not going to have much of a
shortness in terms of experience.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
No, absolutely not. Just a very strong scoring group. And
the Badgers scored sixteen points in a row in this
game of sixteen oh run. It's their longest run by
the Badgers this season, just besting their fifteen to oh
run against Campbell in the season opener. So yeah, last
time to one on a fifteen or more point run. Yeah,

(17:46):
it was the beginning of the season against Campbell.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
Well, in that run against Campbell was the beginning of
a twenty nine to two run to end the game,
right it was.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
Yes, I don't think today quite matched up with that.

Speaker 5 (17:57):
Although the individual scoreless streak in which the Badgers were
able to score sixteen today was longer. I don't think
that they had the you know, the long standing run
that they had against Campbell.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
Well, at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
I mean, they're scoring points in bunches, and when their
defense is on, it's on. It's just about getting it
on more frequently or pause. It's about turning that thing
on earlier I was going to say, and stopping the
opponent more consistently.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
Because this was a close game. I mean, it was
a five.

Speaker 5 (18:27):
Point game right after break, and I don't think many
anticipated that.

Speaker 6 (18:32):
No they didn't.

Speaker 4 (18:33):
But then Wisconsin quickly ran away and everyone's like, Okay,
we're feeling a little bit better about this. But Wisconsin
took care of the ball in this game, just four
total turnovers, and there was a time where we thought
it was just gonna be one turnover.

Speaker 6 (18:46):
They had one turnover in.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
The first half, and until about seven and a half
minutes to go in the second half, the Badgers had
just one turnover in this game. The last time Wisconsin
had one or fewer turnovers in a game, it was
against Iowa January twentieth, twenty fifteen. So ten years ago
was the last time they had won or fewer turnovers

(19:07):
in a game. So close in this game, but they
end up with a handful. They end up with four
and couldn't get quite get there in the last eight minutes. Yeah,
but also going back a little bit last time and
getting so close to setting something new, the Badgers put
up thirty nine three point attempts in this game. They

(19:28):
were just lofting it from three they were one, So
that makes them one three point attempt shy of forty.
And the last time Wisconsin hoisted forty three pointers in
a game was against Temple on December third, two thousand
and one. Really, yeah, two thousand and one was the
last time they put up forty three point attempts.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
I would have thought that happened last season, but hey,
credit to them.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
They they haven't been brought thirty plus multiple times last season,
but forty they never quite got to. Yeah, two thousand
and one was the last time just one one attempt
shy Here tonight and the final fun fact here on
Fun Facts with Dave the series here with si u E.
The Badgers obviously now undefeated three and zero against s

(20:14):
i u E in their history. But the last time
the Badgers played the Cougars of s IU Edwardsville, the
leading scorer was a John Lure if you remember him.

Speaker 3 (20:24):
He was pretty good, good player, NBA guy as.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
Well, And in that game there was a big you
know crowd you know moments where we had an alley
oop from guard Jordan Taylor to the big man, John Lure,
which sent the crowd into a frenzy. And today we
had a big time alley oop from our guard Nick

(20:47):
Boyd to the big man, Nolan Winter. So a little
bit of parallels there every time, you know, last time
si U E came to town, there was a big
alley oop from the big man, and we see that
now twice in a row. So it's a little bit
of parallels there.

Speaker 5 (21:04):
Yeah, well that was quite the moment here tonight. The
crowd got up pretty pretty significantly in that moment.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
You know, it's a Monday night. It wasn't a full
crowd here.

Speaker 5 (21:13):
SIU maybe doesn't sell as much as some of the
more significant opponents.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
Why I can't imagine, but it was still pretty loud.

Speaker 5 (21:21):
I mean, the Cole Center still is one of the
better environments to play in, especially when you're winning and
playing well.

Speaker 6 (21:28):
Yeah, absolutely, I could not agree more.

Speaker 4 (21:31):
And the Badgers, yeah, they do well there at home
at the Cole Center and also at the Cole Center.
Is our friend Nick Osen from twenty four to seven Sports,
and he is going to be joining us on the
other side, and we're gonna get his insights after he
talked with a couple of the Badgers players, talked with
Greg Gard in the postgame press conference. We're gonna get
his thoughts coming up on the other side.

Speaker 6 (21:53):
Stay with us.

Speaker 4 (21:54):
This is the Jane Ksecurty Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
The gar Locke answer back to Blackwell for three White
Corner nailed it. Goodness gracious only makes it look easy
and it isn't seventy four to forty maybe for him
it is seventy four to forty nine Wisconsin.

Speaker 4 (22:16):
This is the Jank Scurity Solutions Basketball postgame Show. From
home security to Automation, Jay and KSE Security Solutions has
you covered. Go to jksecurity dot com for more info.
Dave Gasper here along with Nick Bruswiz. The Badgers are
the winners here tonight, ninety four to sixty nine over
the Cougars of SIU Edwardsville. Great game for the Badgers tonight.

(22:40):
They went on a sixteen to oh run early on
there in the second half to pull away in this one,
and that had to make you know, Badgers fans at
the Cole Center pretty happy, and it has to make
Nick Oson pretty happy. But then again, he's always pretty happy.
He's a pretty happy, positive guy. As we welcome in
Nickoson from twenty four to seven Sports Now to the
Janksecuredy Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 6 (23:02):
Nick, this one.

Speaker 4 (23:03):
Was a little surprisingly close there throughout the first half
of SIUE, putting up forty one points in the first half,
but that's sixteen nothing. Run had to make things a
little look a little bit better in your eyes.

Speaker 8 (23:17):
Yeah, guys, you know, thank you for having me and
moving things around a little bit. The pressers were great
downstairs tonight, and you know, Dave I thought that really
what stood out to me about this game, that run
and just kind of the night as a whole, was
kind of some of the versatility and all the different
scoring options, specifically in that backcourt. Dave I felt like,

(23:38):
you know, Boyd was obviously instrumental with his scoring, but
also his passing. I thought that Blackwell set the tone
in both halves and then Rody. While it might not
kind of jump off the stat book, you know, I
think that he just affects the game in so many ways.
I think Rap got going a little bit more in
the second half too. Not his best shooting night, but
all I think really good looks. So just as a

(23:58):
whole defensively as well, I think the guys just settled
in a little bit. But even though Siui scored forty
one in the first half, I felt like, outside of
three or four looks in the paint, it was actually
a decent defensive effort, and I know early on they
had some really just tough shot making two.

Speaker 5 (24:14):
When you look at John Blackwell's efficiency tonight, right, it
wasn't just the point total, but it was the efficiency
six of eleven from the field, five of six from three.
He's one of three Badgers including Boyd and Rapped to
hit at least three three pointers tonight. What stuck out
the most to you about John because it's felt effortless
to me.

Speaker 8 (24:35):
Yeah, you kind of stole it there at the end,
Brews that he just really did make things look look easy.
I think from the jump, you know, one thing that
I really wrote about was, you know, three level scoring, right,
obviously we know we can get to the Cup. His
mid range has been phenomenal so far this season, but
he hit from distance. He drew some fouls, which he

(24:55):
learned obviously, as we talked about from Tanjay a little
bit last year. I think he's starting to show just
kind of that slowing down game, you know, letting the
defense hit him a little bit, finishing through contact. I
just asked coach Guard about it. Guys like, I know
you were just asking about JB. Brews, but he's obviously,
you know, probably the best guy him or Boyd that backcourt.

(25:16):
I'm starting to think, as I'm watching a little bit
more college hoops by the week, can be one of
the best units in the entire country.

Speaker 4 (25:23):
I'm talking about Nick Osen from twenty four to seven
Sports and Nick, Yeah, as you mentioned, this group can
be one of the best in the country. And they
moved up one spot to number twenty three in the
AP pole this week. But last week, when we were
talking after the game against ball State, we talked about
fifteen turnovers by this Badger's team, and we're like, yeah,

(25:45):
that doesn't sound right, and I believe during the six
games off that coaching staff worked quite a bit on
the turnovers, just four in this game that that had
to stick out. I mean, what did you see differently
from Wisconsin in this game protecting the ball, Dave.

Speaker 8 (26:03):
So I'm going to give you a little funny nugget,
okay from the cas about this topic. So I asked
coach Guard about something similar, and he said that they're
actually kind of fighting for a little bit that that
total to be three turnovers because they didn't feel that
the Blackwell one should have been. It was on the
spot where he just kind of quickly had the ball
then Siue got it back and threw it up from

(26:25):
like three quarters of kind of that half court because
there shouldn't have been a full possession change. So I
think all of that to show you, Dave, they are
taking a lot of pride in that. We're not surprised
by that obviously. I think kind of the high amount
of turnovers from that last game was something we were
all a bit surprised by. You know, I didn't think
a lot of them were terrible, but tonight, if you
can score in the nineties, guys, even the eighties. But

(26:47):
I mean mid nineties, they easily could have gotten to
one hundred if they wanted and have less than five
six seven turnovers. I do mean this, you can beat
anybody in the country because Siue is a very respectable
program that actually was in the tournament last year and
has been there before. So really great note, Dave, and
something that I know Guard took a lot of pride in.

Speaker 5 (27:07):
I'm gonna go a little bit off the beaten path
here and trying to highlight maybe one of the more
unique performances from tonight will Garlack with four assists, no turnovers,
and he's seven feet tall and he's a raw freshman
big man. He saw some of his action, of course
in high school. Now he's here at the college level.

(27:27):
Was that always part of his bag? Has he always
been maybe more of a pass not heavy but pass able.

Speaker 8 (27:34):
Big yeah, bruise, I mean, phenomenal question, because again it's
something that I was hitting on. Look, I watched him
play a lot in high school, right, I knew he
could do it. I'm not sure that I even expected
this impact, passing the ball this quickly, and something I
asked Gard about last week. They've got him, you know,
using kind of sometimes at the high post, the elbow

(27:55):
or the nail they might say, or even the top
of the key. And he was having some of these
assists last week tonight, no turnovers on that. I just
I feel like both of those young guys, Garlock Bielawskis
play a little bit beyond their years and what a
class this could be if the guys stick around probably no,
you know, two years ago, so three four years and

(28:16):
potentially go to NBA or Europe wherever they might end up.
But some really good young players in that group.

Speaker 4 (28:23):
And Nick they got some really good young players coming
in next year. We saw that they just announced some
of the signees for next year's class that we could
be seeing at the Cole Center next year.

Speaker 6 (28:33):
Who are some of those guys that we should be
excited about.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
Yeah, you bet so.

Speaker 8 (28:37):
Dave Trey Fenderson, an in state star La Travion Fenderson
who's now finishing up at DM. He was in the
Racine area, but he's now playing there. High floor guard
is what i'd say. He's about six four sixt' five.
I think he'll probably end up at the at the
one or two at the next level. And Jackson Ball
another guy that you know they've gotten from the Australia

(28:57):
New Zealand areas, and he's a really really high ceiling.
You know, hopefully he can gain an inch or two.
But great Handles can shoot the lights out and has
been kind of getting some of those reps at the
pro levels there obviously during Foeba as well.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
Dave Well and with this Nick.

Speaker 5 (29:14):
You look at the performance tonight, the performances we've seen
so far this year, you think this group's ready to.

Speaker 3 (29:21):
Go for a challenge like BYU on Friday.

Speaker 8 (29:23):
Yeah, without question. You know, I'm not saying that they're
gonna go out and for sure win, but I absolutely
think that they can. If they defend like they have
in the moments we've seen the really good ones, then
they can get there. I think offensively they can score
with about anybody in the country. They're gonna have to
be at their best athletically with just some of the
different bodies and strength and athleticism that BYU presents. But guys,

(29:47):
I'm excited. And when we catch up after that show,
it will be live from Salt Lake City.

Speaker 4 (29:53):
Look, there we go, traveling Man seeing the World. Nikos
in twenty four to seven Sports. As always, we appreciate
you your hustle on the beat, and we appreciate you
joining us after each and every game.

Speaker 8 (30:04):
Thank you so much. Fallas talk very soon.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
There, he goes Nick Osin of twenty four to seven sports.
Badgers are winners here tonight, ninety four sixty nine. We'll
hear comments from Greg Guard after the game. Coming up next.
This is the JANK Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (30:26):
Oh no throwings two six candles. So at the top
of the circle's sad Us with the drill will try
to handle off to Robinson, broke it up by Winter,
throws to Boyd lives the Winter who sends it down hard.
You can see that coming.

Speaker 4 (30:40):

K can integrate your world. Visit jksecurity dot Com. Dave
Guasper here along with Nick Bruswiz. After this Badger's ninety
four to sixty nine victory over Si you E. And

(31:01):
it was a little bit close in that first half,
just forty eight forty one at halftime. A lot of
points in the paint for SIU Edwardsville had great guard
a little bit upset, as he talked about when he
met up with Matt Leapaye and Charlie Wills after the game.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Joining courtside by the Badger's head coaches. Wisconsin four and
oh ninety four to sixty nine over SIU edwards Ville,
a team they shot about fifty seven percent from the
field in the first half and thirty two percent in
the second half. Greg, Obviously, you guys were better defensively,
but they made some tough shots too, didn't they They did,

(31:38):
chef they did.

Speaker 7 (31:39):
I mean, twenty two points in the paint in the
first half was way too many. I mean some of
them were, I mean paint shots. You think that not
all layups. There was plenty of layups. There's probably sixteen
or fourteen or sixteen of the twenty two were right
at the rim, and we just didn't do a good
job of stopping the ball or we got we let
the ball go away from the screen. We didn't squeeze

(32:00):
well enough. So I thought second half we were better.
You know, we we tightened things up. You know, we
were able to keep our our sink offensively, you know,
to be able to hold them to thirty two percent
in the second half. I thought was was good and
you know, better better in the second half, and we
we got to get better. I mean defense, we've always
known this group can score. It's going to be the

(32:22):
other end of the floor that we know we're going
to have to continue to improve upon.

Speaker 9 (32:26):
Yeah, And speaking of that second half adjustment, was it
focused on defense and keeping it out of the paint
or because we saw you switch into a one to
three one to maybe slow them down.

Speaker 7 (32:34):
Yeah, I mean we've tinkered with that. You know, we've
used it in other years. We've this is probably the
earliest we've used it. Just when we had we wanted
to look in because we may use it down the road.
You never know, So you want to throw it. You know,
a team that's been driving it, driving it, driving it,
took away all their ball screens and it did what
it accomplished. You know, they hit the second possession, They
ran a little hit, a little twelve footer, which is, hey,

(32:55):
you've accomplished what you want out of it. So I
don't think we're going to go exclusively zoned charily if
you're asking that or no, But it's it's a wrinkle.
It's yes, a mix up, and it bust rhythm. And
I've watched, I've you know, I've constantly got my staff
trying to convince me of this or that or anything.
But it does bust a rhythm. I mean, it does

(33:16):
it to us. When teams go zone a little bit,
it takes a rhythm away. So I thought it served
its purpose, and now we get a little confidence in it.
We'll work on it and you never know when we
have to, you know, play it again.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
I thought I saw a couple of your assistants really
smiling because I said, the year, we see this a
lot in June, so you see it. So he's like, hey,
they did it.

Speaker 6 (33:35):
It works. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (33:36):
Well, Coach Kravanov wan to play triangle into the next possession.

Speaker 6 (33:40):
He said about how about this, let's try this next.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
Charlie mentioned something Greg in this game. I mean it's
a seven point game at the half and then five
and get an early bucket. And you see a lot
of squirrely things anytime of the year in college basketball.
You can really see him early. But as Charlie mentioned,
you guys, there wasn't panic. Stayed with it. It's an
important step here as you guys continue togree.

Speaker 7 (34:02):
It is because we have to continue to you know,
other teams are going to make runs regardless of who
you're playing, and you have to just keep playing. And
I thought we did from an offensive standpoint. You know,
we got in a rhythm, we kept playing, and you know,
and then eventually we were able, Like I said, in
most of the second half, we were able to clamp
down defensively and be better and force them into some
tougher shots. You know, they hit two of them were

(34:24):
in the first half. Two of those shot clock threes
we didn't have enough ball pressure, and then the one
three in transition. But second half, I thought we were
better at shutting off the ball and not getting beat
off the dribble.

Speaker 9 (34:36):
Yeah, you could really tell that. You guys did a
lot more inside out for those three point shots versus
the first half. They were just a lot of.

Speaker 6 (34:43):
Yeah at the rim.

Speaker 7 (34:44):
Yeah, we didn't play at the rim, even though we
got to the bonus. I thought we should have shot
more free throws and played more at the rim and
force some of that, Especially a team that really packs
it in, they're gonna dare you to shoot them, you know,
and hope that you know, you miss them Secon and
half we we banged a few through and you know,
and and able.

Speaker 2 (35:04):
To stretch the lead. You a long trip coming up
here with three games and a lot of a lot
of fans, A lot of supporters will be on the
trip as well, and the guys will be able to
see some of their old teammates I think on Saturday.
But man, it part of the fun of the non
conference season from a fans perspective and a big learning
point for you guys is now you play at b

(35:24):
YU and then you get Providence and then either TCU
or Florida. So yeah, fun trip. Great cities.

Speaker 7 (35:32):
Were deep water now you know, the kiddie pool is over,
so to speak. But we need it.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
We need to go.

Speaker 7 (35:40):
This was about as I was talking to my scheduler,
Mark over here on the way out walking out here
for is the absolute max you can play before you
really need because we we need to be We need
to be pushed. We need pressure, we need game pressure.
We need better, you know, bigger bodies, which we'll see.
I mean it's coming, we'll see it Friday, Friday afternoon.

(36:00):
Probably all we can handle. But we're at a point
where we needed. If we're gonna keep growing, we go,
we gotta be pushed and tested.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
All right, we'll have a great trip. Appreciate it. And coach,
congrats four and oh it's all rightful thing, Thank you,
thank you. Badger's head coach, Great Guard joining US Wisconsin
wins ninety four sixty nine.

Speaker 4 (36:17):
All right, there's Badger's head coach Greg Guard and uh, Nick,
you know he talked about it there at the end.
You know, you've had these uh you know, by games,
the b U Y games, and uh you've had four
of them here and that's that's about the max that
the Badgers are looking for until they're looking for an
actual tough test to have early on in the season.
And they're gonna get that coming up on Friday with

(36:37):
b YU.

Speaker 3 (36:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (36:39):
Absolutely, And you consider maybe the value of having already
played Oklahoma and that scrimmage advisor, right, because other than that,
you talking about uw Platteville and then the four games
we've already highlighted tonight that officially counted. Uh yeah, you're
gonna look back at Oklahoma, who's a pretty good team.
Nebraska and the Sooners just had a pretty nice battle
a couple of nights ago where Nebraska came out on top.

(37:00):
But this is a program at least that Wisconsin has
seen of caliber earlier this year, and you'll look to
build off that moving forward, starting with BYU on Friday.

Speaker 4 (37:10):
Yeah, we are excited to be there for you after
that game, the first trip on the road for the
Badgers this season. But before we look ahead to that, Nick,
any final thoughts on this win here over SIU Edwardsville.

Speaker 3 (37:25):
No, I'm feeling pretty good about this group.

Speaker 5 (37:27):
I think that their bench is proving to be everything
they need to kind of spell the starters. I do
wonder if one were to go down in that starting five.

Speaker 3 (37:37):
Who would be slotted in, how they would go about that.

Speaker 5 (37:40):
But as of right now, knock on wood, this is
a healthy team playing really well offensively in getting better
by the game in my opinion.

Speaker 6 (37:48):
Yeah, they are.

Speaker 4 (37:49):
And it's a deep group that they have and a
lot of scoring options. And we see as this Wisconsin
team continues to grow and and we'll see them next
in action on Friday against by you. That'll do it
for us here tonight once again. Your final score here

(38:10):
Wisconsin ninety four SIU Edwardsville sixty nine for our producer,
Casey James, for Nick Bruswiz.

Speaker 6 (38:17):
I'm Dave Gasper. Thank you for listening.

Speaker 4 (38:19):
This has been the Jane K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (38:25):
Got eight seconds to play and now Jordan Pickett, we'll
bring it across front court with two seconds, with one
and it's over. The Badgers will head west with a
four and Tozer record seven points at the half. Quickly
they had shaped at the five, did SIU Edwardsville and
from there the Badgers took complete control.
