Speaker 4 (00:13):
For three and the tie background. No good.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Now here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick bruce Awitz.

Speaker 5 (00:23):
Welcome into the Jay and K Security Solutions basketball postgame Show.
I'm your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick bruce Witz.
The Badgers improved to three and zero on the season
with an eighty six fifty five win over Ball State.
We invite you to join the conversation with us on
the hotline. Six oh eight, three, two, one thirteen ten

(00:44):
is the number two call in Wisconsin took complete control
of this game early on, scoring the first seven points
and then ever since the score was thirteen to four,
the Badgers had a double digit lead the rest of
the way. It was a pretty quiet game for one
of Wisconsin's biggest stars in John Blackwell just eight points
in this game, but Nolan Winter had a big game,

(01:06):
Braden Carrington broke out a little bit, and Nick. This
offense continues to hum along against their non conference competition.

Speaker 6 (01:14):
Yeah, this is a team that I just don't think
you're gonna have to worry about in non non conference
competition coming up, like what we know they have on
the schedule, certainly what we saw here in the last
couple of games, and coming up this next week against Siue,
there really isn't a concern about if the Badgers are
gonna win or not. I know they're gonna win. It's

(01:34):
just a matter of how they're gonna look in that
respective game. Tonight felt like one of those defensive showings
that you're looking for from a group that you know
can put in the output that they do on the
offensive end. And you're right, you didn't necessarily need a
lot from John Blackwell or even Nick Boyd to a degree.
He came out firing red hot and then didn't necessarily

(01:56):
do much the rest of the game, right, I think
he had eight points in the early going, then after
that just four more in the rest of the game.
So yeah, I felt like Wisconsin came out of the
gates and this one was incredible. Then they hit a
long stride of I would say average play. I mean,
they're up thirty to ten and they end up going
thirty two to ten. Technically, and then they go into

(02:16):
the break thirty nine to twenty six.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
Yeah, a little bit of a lull they're heading into halftime,
but they still felt comfortably in control of that game.
Then they'd come out in the second half and they
continue to play well and just kind of start shooting
the ball hot again and pull away and make it
just a very comfortable victory this whole time. Five different
players in double digits for the Badgers. John Blackwell the

(02:41):
only starter to not be in double digits in this game,
which again we don't say that very often, but that
Badgers didn't need a ton of him tonight. And Greg
Guard getting some rest for his starters as well, and
Nick Boyd only playing in nineteen minutes in this game,
Andrew Roady twenty minutes to action was John Blackwell getting

(03:02):
on the court for twenty six minutes. So a lot
of bench action in this game as Greg Guard gets
his rotations in there, gets the bench players some experience,
and yeah, Wisconsin in complete control.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Even though as much.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
As you know, Greg Guard prides this team on not
turning the ball over. Fifteen turnovers in this game, Nick,
they lost the turnover battle, actually just fourteen turnovers by
ball State fifteen by Wisconsin, and there was some tough
stretches there, but overall that, I mean, that's gonna be
something on the teach tape that they're gonna have to

(03:37):
clean up when they do face better competition.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (03:39):
I think that comes with the pace. This is a
team that's gonna move the ball very quickly. They're looking
to pass the ball as many times per possession as
they can before they'll get a quick look. I just
think you look at this group and you say that
they are incomplete to this point, but they're still blowing
out everyone they're playing, And I think that's a good
spot to be And because if you're the best version

(04:01):
of yourself this time of year, that means something goes
wrong the rest of the way. Wisconsin seems to be
far from the best version of themselves at this point,
But the reality is that this is a very deep group,
and even on days at which John Blackwell isn't necessarily right,
it at no point hampered anyone's ability to think that

(04:22):
this team was going to pull.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
This one out.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah. Correct.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
I mean, this is a game where you can afford
to have kind of some of those lapses, some of
those trying to figure it out moments early on here
in the season. And that's why you schedule the games
like the Ball States and the Campbell and games like
this in the SIU Edwardsville's coming up. That's why you
schedule them because it allows you a little bit more

(04:47):
of that margin for error in the early going here
to try and figure some things out. It's a new
group playing together. You got several transfers in the starting
rotation here, you got a bunch of freshmen that are
playing quite a bit as well, So it takes a
little bit of time to get all these guys to
fully mesh together, but still to be able to put

(05:08):
up eighty six points early on here. Now, this was
technically their worst offensive performance of the season because they've
been in the nineties the first couple of names nick,
and we've been wondering, like, hey, how long until they
pushed two one hundred. It seemed like they might have
been on pace here for a moment, but in the
second half you could tell they really kind of eased
it back a little bit.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
No doubt, And you know, then on the flip side,
you would say that this is their best defensive performance
of the year.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
Right, So.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
You pick your poison with this group right now, Wisconsin
is truly finding different ways to impact this game. Early
today it was just a blowout pretty quickly with Sconson
comes out shooting hot. Nick Boyd, as I've already highlighted,
was able to put his foot on the gas and deliver,
and it felt to me after that Greg was trying

(05:57):
to negotiate, negotiate maybe the right word, but find different
ways to change who is on the court right, to
try and change up the configuration of how he was
going to go about it because he had the ability
up by twenty early in this game to mess around

(06:17):
a little bit with who he wants out there, see
different rotations, and I think there's value in that.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
I thought that Braden Carrington today was awesome.

Speaker 6 (06:25):
I think that there's gonna be somebody off the bench
every night that surprises us with their contribution, and that
to me, tonight you saw Carrington really just deliver in
his seventeen minutes plus twenty three one on the court,
which is second best only to Andrew Roady who was
plus twenty six.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
Yeah, it was really an incredible run. There's especially for
Carrington there in the second half. You know, being able
to get a steal in a layup, you know, another layup,
hitting a three, you know, a couple of big shots
there for Braden Carrington, because Nick.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
When we've talked about this team and we talked about.

Speaker 5 (06:59):
The tri answers that come in getting all the headlines
has been the Nick Boyds and the Andrew Rodies and
the Austin Repts of the world. They've gotten the headlines
as the transfers. They've been in the starting lineup this
entire time. But Bradon Carrington is showing us here too
why he's such a big piece of this mix as well.
Twelve points in this game, four six shooting, four rebounds

(07:21):
as well in just seventeen minutes. Having that plus twenty
three As you pointed out, I mean, Carrington is someone
that can't be forgotten about in this mix. He had
a relatively quiet first two games of the season, but
he's still someone who can fill it up.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (07:37):
I think they like his size as a wing defender,
in his ability with the ball in his hands.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
He does it all.

Speaker 6 (07:43):
I think there's value in having someone that maybe doesn't
have a fixed position, and he put all twelve of
those points up on the second half, but in his
six minutes in the first half he did have two
boards and he was plus seven on the floor. Something
to be said about being in the right place at
the right time. I've been doing the right thing, and
so far we haven't seen much from him that would

(08:04):
suggest that maybe this is too hard of competition, that
this moment is too big for him.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
He's delivered in each of their games.

Speaker 6 (08:13):
You understand, as you highlighted, maybe not gaudy stats, but
I've noted him. I've asked nick Osin about it. Maybe
I'll ask him again later in this program about him.
But I do think that you need to be able
to rely on somebody, if not multiple people, off your
bench in a given game. And Kate Brayden Carrington was
tonight's guy that stuck out most.

Speaker 7 (08:33):
To me.

Speaker 6 (08:34):
You're gonna hear a lot of Jack jen Nicki conversation
this year Will Garlock as a true freshman, his size,
Alexis Bilauskis, his size, his shooting ability outside for his
given size. I mean, there are guys that are gonna
be difference makers night in and night out off the bench.
And once again, you didn't need much from your starting

(08:55):
lineup tonight. I think this would be their lowest output
from a starting lineup so far this season.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
You only had ten from.

Speaker 6 (09:02):
Roady, twelve from boy to eleven from Rap eight from
John Blackwell. So right there, you got only forty one
points or forty flat.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
So that's pretty good.

Speaker 5 (09:13):
Yeah, I mean it's a run. That's when you're facing
ball state here in the early going, you can afford
to get more time here to the bench. I mean
a lot of bench minutes here in this game. Carrington
was seventeen Janiki with twenty one, Hayden Jones got fifteen minutes,
bi Alaskas seventeen minutes, Will Garlock twelve minutes off the bench.
So you can afford to go with some of those

(09:35):
guys further down in the rotation and see what they
can do. Get them sometime here in the early going,
before you get to the games like BYU and Marquette
and Big Ten Conference play, when you tighten up that
rotation a little bit, so you get these guys those
wraps early on, get them some confidence building, and that's
exactly what Wisconsin has been doing here in the early

(09:56):
part of the season, improving to three and zero, and
that really does boost your confidence as well. And yeah,
it's going to be different guys every single night from
the bench that come through tonight it was Braden Carrington.
It's gonna be different guys every night from that starting
lineup as well. Some nights it's gonna be Nick Boyd
going off for twenty plus. Some nights it'll be John
Blackwell going off. And tonight, really the big one was

(10:19):
Nolan Winter putting together a great game with the nineteen points,
ten boards as well a double double for him. And
we'll get more on that double double there from Nolan
Winter coming up in fun Facts with Dave.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
That's gonna be coming up on the other side of
the break here.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
Also coming up later on the show, we are going
to talk with Nick os him from twenty four to
seven Sports. Get his thoughts on another Badger's blowout victory
here tonight to start the season, the Badgers win eighty
six fifty five over Ball State.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
Stay with us.

Speaker 5 (10:51):
This is the Jank Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Jack Jernicky on the left side feats Carlock inside Alaskas.
Lower the right easy money. So I am dunk Alexis
b Alaskas.

Speaker 5 (11:11):
Welcome back, to the Jay and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame show. Jay and K Security Solutions from home theaters
to smart lighting to a universal home control go online
to jksecurity dot Com. Dave Gasper here with you alongside
Nick Brucewitz as the Badgers get the eighty six to
fifty five win over Ball State their third game of

(11:32):
this season, a non conference play here, another dominating win
from start to finish. Wisconsin was all over the Cardinals here,
and it started really early on in this game, and
it started with Nolan Winter making his jumper to start
put Wisconsin up on the board. And Winter ended up

(11:53):
with nineteen points as the leading scorer in this game,
a very efficient seven of eleven from the field. Nick,
We're seeing quite the growth here from Nolan Winter in
his third the third season with the Badgers.

Speaker 6 (12:06):
Yeah, and he's being asked to play a little bit
of a different role this year. I think last year
he was the four. He was spending a lot of
time out on the perimeter working his way into the paint,
as rotations would suggest, but he was the second biggest
guy on the floor more often than not.

Speaker 4 (12:22):
Stephen Crawell was your big, he was your five. He
was in the paint.

Speaker 6 (12:25):
He was down low, he was getting boards, he was
doing what big men do. Nolan's doing that now that's
his role. I mean he's better from the outside, I
would say than Krawell was. Steve was a good shooter.
Nolan's a little bit better. Came in with that as
a part of his game. It's gotten better as time
has gone on. But his aggression at the rim, whether
it's with the putback dunk in this game, the put

(12:46):
back layup, his ability to drive the rim and his
passing ability. Yeah, Nolan's just coming into his own. I
think he's on a similar trajectory of John Blackwell. You know,
Blackwell got better after year one. Now in year three three,
you know, year to one to year two to year three,
it's getting better each year.

Speaker 4 (13:04):
Nolan Winter seems.

Speaker 6 (13:05):
To be doing the same and this year it's i
mean practically a double double every game.

Speaker 5 (13:10):
Yeah, And that's that's kind of the crazy part because
when we looked at you know, Stephen Krowell last year
playing the five as you mentioned that the aircraft carrier
the USS Crow as Pat and Walkershaw has dubbed him. Yeah,
we we always were wanting the aggression from Stephen Krowe
down there in the paint to get the rebounds, to

(13:31):
get the points. We were always begging him to be
more aggressive Nolan Winter. It doesn't feel like we have
to beg him to be aggressive down there. He's he's
been getting after the rebounds, he's been getting after other points,
chasing the contact. He's fine with the contact and going up,
drawing the fouls and putting the shots up. And I
think that's kind of the refreshing part of it, because

(13:54):
it's no longer like we have to beg the big
down there to to be aggressive and take that contact.
Nolan Winter is happy to do.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
It, absolutely.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
And Nolan's one of those dudes that I think that
Coach Guard definitely challenged in the offseason. I mean, when
you're being tasked with replacing Steven Crowell and you're not
sure where Nolan Winter's gonna slot in, you're gonna challenge
him to be in the weight room, to be more physical,
to be more of a presence. And he's clearly responded

(14:25):
well to that, and I have no doubt that Coach
Guard has put him in the best place to succeed
and aid it in his growth in that regard, but.

Speaker 4 (14:34):
Some of it is internal.

Speaker 6 (14:35):
Some of it is the player needs to internalize it
and take that and roll with it and push and
be better as a human being on the court and
off to earn opportunities. Because I think this is a
program like many across the country, where you value who
these people are as human beings as much as you
do as athletes.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
And I think no one's checking both boxes.

Speaker 1 (14:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
Absolutely, it's important to develop the young man not only athletically,
not only on the court, but also just as people.
And Great Garden in Wisconsin's program has done a phenomenal
job of that throughout the years, going back to Bo Ryan,
going back to whatever era you want to go to,
Wisconsin has done a phenomenal job of turning out quality

(15:19):
young men. And it's it's great to see and it's
great to follow a program that does that, and it's
very fun to see those guys develop, as you know, Nick,
And that just leads us to fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
Hey, have you ever heard me? Here's the term fun fact.
I got a couple of fun facts here because I
have a fun fight. You have a fun fact.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
I do.

Speaker 5 (15:42):
First time in history this has happened at eight games,
five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists. Spent a
long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 8 (15:52):
For fun out here.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
This game's fun.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
Okay, I don't know.

Speaker 9 (15:55):
If that fact is fun?

Speaker 4 (15:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (15:57):
Are you fired up up for fun facts with Dave?
All Right?

Speaker 5 (16:03):
The facts are always more fun after a win, as
we say, and this was a big time win for Wisconsin.
So we got some big time fun facts. I got
four of them for you here on Fun Facts with Dave.
And we're gonna start with talking about Nolan Winter here
with his nineteen points in this game and ten rebounds.
That is a double double. And that is the fifth

(16:26):
career double double for Nolan Winter. So that's also his
second of the season. So prior to this year, in
his two years previously with Wisconsin, he totaled three double
doubles in all those seasons. In those two seasons combined,
this year he has two double doubles in three games.

Speaker 4 (16:50):
Yeah, and I think he came pretty close in the
one that he missed.

Speaker 5 (16:54):
Yeah, he did. He had in the game against Northern Illinois.
He had just seven rebounds in that game with twelve points.
So just a little bit shy in the game against NIU.
But yeah, he is a double double machine practically at

(17:15):
this point, which you absolutely love to see. And that's
helped the Badgers out to a three and oh start
this season. And this is the badgers third three and
oh start in the past five years. So it's been
a very successful run. And the Badgers have challenged themselves
with some very tough early non conference games past couple
of years, so that's why I think there's only been

(17:39):
three in the past five years. But still it is
great to see this run of success. And final two
fun facts here, Nick, we're talking some career milestones that
are going to be coming up here. John Blackwell with
his eight points tonight is now just ninety one points

(18:00):
of one thousand in his college career. Okay, amazing. I
mean we are going to be on you know, John Blackwell.
Watch here, he's closing in on a thousand points in
his career. And how quickly he's been able to get
there phenomenal. So he's ninety one points away. And then
although he hasn't been here as long and you know,

(18:22):
he's he's bounced around a little bit. Andrew Roady with
his ten points tonight is now twenty six points, shy
of one thousand in his career, so he's gonna get
there before John Blackwell. He's closing in a little bit more.
But Andrew Roady and John Blackwell closing in on some
milestones here.

Speaker 4 (18:40):
Good for them.

Speaker 6 (18:41):
Began his career at Saint Thomas at Is Roady and
then transferred to a far lower, more methodical brand of
basketball Virginiere. He spent multiple seasons. Roady's a hell of
a player. We saw tonight. He's going to be I
think this year's version of Max klesmant where doesn't necessarily
depend on his offensive output, but his effort on both

(19:03):
ends is going to be recognized throughout the season. Plays
great defense, and I think that I think that's there
needs to be diversity and what roles guys play and
what their abilities are. And I'm fired up to see
both Roady and Blackwell get a thousand points this year.

Speaker 5 (19:17):
Yeah, they are closing in on it very quick. And
that's part of it too, with what Greg Guard is
putting together in the transfer portal, trying to find guys
to fit different roles, what you need on the team,
and when you lose a guy like Max Klusmit to graduation.
You need to kind of fill that kind of role
because he was very important. Klusman was a massive part
of this team for the last couple of seasons. So

(19:38):
to find a guy who can fill that type of
role in Roady, that's exactly what Greg Guard needs and
that's exactly how you look to that transfer portal to
fill your roster and stay competitive and stay so good
year in and year out.

Speaker 6 (19:53):
Yeah, and Max Klesmitt did make the opening day roster
for the Salt Lake the G League team with the
with the jack, so go.

Speaker 4 (20:01):
Credit to him. To Jay's on that group with a
two way contract.

Speaker 6 (20:04):
Stephen Krawlet did not make the cut there, but another
opportunity likely awaits him elsewhere. So it's cool to see
that and just felt like I should add that in
the fun facts when we talk about Max Klesmett.

Speaker 5 (20:17):
Oh, Yeah, absolutely, very fun to see him, Very fun
to see him and John Tanjay together in the NBA,
even though it is the G League. Yes, but it's
fun to see those guys stick together and be in
the same organization. The success that they had, the chemistry
that they had together, So I think that's gonna be
able to translate fairly well, and hopefully we see them

(20:39):
with the Utah Jazz, you know, on the NBA club
fairly soon and see what they can end up doing,
because we know they can ball. I mean, just in
what we've seen in the last couple of years, you
know that those two guys can ball. So you know,
I'm excited to see what they can end up doing.
And you know, I'm excited to see too, where some
of the guys from this year's team end up going

(21:00):
in the NBA, because you know, you got a feeling
like you got a couple of NBA type guys on
this club, especially John Blackwell.

Speaker 4 (21:08):
No doubt.

Speaker 6 (21:08):
I mean, these are players that if they don't play
in the NBA an arn't part of the G League,
are going to play internationally in very significant leagues. This
is what this program does. It breeds very good professional
basketball players.

Speaker 5 (21:23):
Yeah, and uh, we're excited to see where they end
up going. And uh, it's gonna be a lot of
fun to follow them. So that has been fun. Facts
with Dave here on the jan K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame show coming up on the other side, we are
going to talk with Nick Osin from twenty four to
seven Sports. He is, he covers the Badgers all across

(21:44):
the board. We're gonna get his thoughts on tonight's victory
over ball State that's coming up.

Speaker 1 (21:49):
Stick with us.

Speaker 5 (21:50):
This is the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Actually, and he's Pilford by Carrington, mack Is Elmore, James
Braiden to the rim. The layup is good for Braidon
Carrington at a time out taking by Michael Lewis. As
the Badgers have blown in wide open here in the
second half.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
This a real full time out.

Speaker 5 (22:17):
Welcome back to the Jay and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame Show. From home security to automation, Jay and K
Security Solutions as you covered. Go to jksecurity dot com
for more info. Dave Gasper here along with Nick bruce
Witz at the Cole Center and we are joined now
by Nick Osen from twenty four to seven Sports, our

(22:38):
Badgers insider joining us after every single game. As always, Nick,
we appreciate it. And this game, Wisconsin took care of
business as we all expected. Nolan Winter the big scorer
in this one with nineteen points ten boards, his second
double double already of the season. Nick, as we were

(22:58):
just kind of talking about in fun facts with day
here two in three games already this year, now five
in his career, Can you just tell us a little
bit about what you've seen from winter making the development
jump from last year to this year.

Speaker 9 (23:13):
Yeah, guys, it's great to be back. And you know, Dave,
I think with Nolan, I've said it a little bit before.
I think even going into the season, man, I think
a lot of it is mental for him right in
terms of taking that next leap, because the skill set,
of course, you can always get better, but I don't
think that aspect actually needs to grow as immensely as
just kind of that confidence and as coach Guard has

(23:34):
talked about Dave knowing you are the best seven footer
on the floor and playing like it right, playing with
dominance with confidence, I think that he's getting there personally.
I even put it on my board and wrote about
it a little bit.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
Frankly.

Speaker 9 (23:48):
I think he's really close, Dave. But somebody asked about him,
you know, with Coach Guard postgame, and he says there
are still some areas he can certainly grow, but the
way he's getting double doubles, like you mentioned, I thought
he was pretty strong around the Hoop. You know, there's
always room to grow, like I said, but I think
he is officially getting to that star level, which I
know that many of us have been ready for, and

(24:10):
this program certainly is as well.

Speaker 1 (24:11):
Dave.

Speaker 6 (24:12):
I felt like tonight you saw kind of the ability
of this group to not necessarily lean on one particular guy.

Speaker 4 (24:21):
And last year it's not like they were.

Speaker 6 (24:23):
Putting the load on the shoulders of John Toanjay. He
just carried it and there were other guys who individually
would have good games. We had a lot of conversations
early in this season. I did, hey, is Max Kleusman
potentially benchworthy because he didn't have to do much and
he wasn't doing much. Tonight you saw all the guys
in the starting lineup outside of Blackwell getting double figures?

(24:44):
Which guy maybe? Do you think we saw a little
bit more from tonight that we had it so far
this year?

Speaker 1 (24:49):
Yeah, Bruce.

Speaker 9 (24:50):
It's funny because I asked a similar question to the players,
and I'm gonna go with the player that I actually
asked two, and that is Brayden Carrington at twelve points.
It seemingly came really quickly, Like I think I remember
just about every bucket in the second half. Yeah, exactly.
It came in kind of spurts. He played just under
eighteen minutes, so nearly half the game, which is really
good minutes off the bench. It looks like second most

(25:11):
minutes out of anybody, uh off the bench. You know,
I thought that he was really good tonight. I mean
so good. He was one of the players that was
on the podium, so I think he's kind of who
stuck out Bruis. But I want to note just in
case you guys weren't you know, maybe gonna ask this one.
It's a little bit of a niche basketball thing, but
actually asked coach Guard the way that Will Garlock is
passing guys as a seven footer, an eighteen year old,

(25:34):
nineteen year old seven footer at the top of the key,
feeding it to other post players. Frankly, I watched him
play a bunch of high school I find it really
really impressive.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (25:43):
You know, I brought it up with Guard. I wrote
about it.

Speaker 9 (25:45):
And that's just something to watch a little bit.

Speaker 1 (25:47):
So I understand you've been listening to Brian Butch, haven't.

Speaker 4 (25:50):
You just got Garlock Middleton kid?

Speaker 7 (25:55):
Right?

Speaker 2 (25:55):
M hm.

Speaker 6 (25:56):
I can't imagine he played with any one of the
size of some of the guys he's playing here, right.

Speaker 4 (26:00):
Yeah, Yeah, so his ability to.

Speaker 6 (26:02):
Be working with not just other forwards, other bigs, but
dudes that are maybe his same size. There's a difficulty
in passing between two bigs like that.

Speaker 9 (26:12):
Yeah, Nick, It's something that I mean, you don't even
see all the time in the NBA. I know, I'm
not saying that these guys are already better than NBA players,
but it's went from Okay, that's kind of cool here
and there too. I think that this is a really
established skill set and I didn't see it at that
level for a few different reasons. I think he wasn't
always used in you know, the great ways that he's

(26:34):
used here. He wasn't playing with six nine, six ten,
seven to one players. But it's just something to really know.
And obviously he's someone that I covered a ton of
his recruitment, same with a couple of the freshmen. But
you know, it's impressive, and I want to give credit
to guard real quick before we toss it back to
our guy Dave, just because I think that this class,

(26:55):
what did I say, guys coming into the year, even
it was one of the preseason games. You said, what's
an area you might be concerned. I said, there's a
lot of youth. I'm not concerned, but they're going to
have to grow up quickly. And again, the competition is
going to take a huge jump. But so far, I
think they're ready for these moments.

Speaker 5 (27:11):
We're talking with Nick Osin from twenty four to seven Sports,
as we do after every single game. Nick, fifteen turnovers
by the Badgers in this game. Is there anything to
read into that at this point in the season, you.

Speaker 9 (27:26):
Know, just to be a little bit of a devil's advocate,
because I am always optimistic, I will say there's a
touch of a reason Dave to just because there was
that lull It was like five and a half minutes
or so in the first half where they were playing
a little bit of laxadaisical ball, and I think that
the staff I would think God on them. It wasn't
really talked about.

Speaker 4 (27:45):
But also it's a veteran group.

Speaker 9 (27:47):
At least four or five of the top seven guys
have certainly been around the game.

Speaker 4 (27:51):
I think they recognize that a.

Speaker 9 (27:52):
Couple were careless, a couple were just kind of like, okay,
maybe a guy wasn't looking yet, I went up for
a layup too quickly, I lost the ball thinking of
Hayden Jones. So that all added up a little bit, Dave,
I would say it needs to get cleaned up, but
it's not really a point of concern because I think
overall still the assistant turnover ratio throughout the season thus
far has been good. Tonight not quite what you're looking for.

(28:16):
Tell me what you make of Hayden Jones so far
this year. I think that we saw Nick Boyd.

Speaker 6 (28:20):
I don't think he touched twenty minutes tonight, right, he
played nineteen If I'm not mistaken, like Jones is getting
a little bit more work here. You're getting him ready
for greater competition, as you highlighted a week from Friday
out in Salt Lake City.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
That'll be BYU.

Speaker 6 (28:33):
You'll be there, so we'll look forward to our conversation
with you live from the game itself next Friday. But
Hayden Jones is gonna have a pretty significant role as
that maybe bench primary ball handler, and I felt like
tonight you saw some pretty significant growth from him in
terms of where he was able to play some of
his passes.

Speaker 9 (28:52):
Yeah, Nick he was one of the names, you know,
I mentioned to you guys because I was hearing the
staff kind of, you know, rave about him a little
bit in the offseason when I was at camps and things,
and I think that he's like a JANICKI or maybe
a Klesman when he was on last year. Not saying
the shooter the max was, but I think when they
step on the floor, they provide a high floor, right.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
I think they can do a lot.

Speaker 9 (29:16):
Well, maybe not great at one single thing, but like Hayden,
you can rely on a lot, and at that size,
you can't teach that size as an eighteen year old.
I mean, he's a true I would say six to six.
I think I've seen him list at sixty seven overseas
maybe six five six, sixth year but he's got the size,
the basketball acumen, I think, the passing ability. Like you said,

(29:37):
I want to see that shot continue to come along. Right,
He doesn't need to be the team's best three point
shooter right now, but just to keep defenses honest, because
I mean, then you're talking about a multi year Big
ten starter.

Speaker 5 (29:49):
Nick osin twenty four to seven Sports. Follow him on
Twitter at the real Nick Osen Nick as always. We
appreciate you hopping on after every single game. Appreciate your insights,
and I will tell talk to you again after SIU
Edwardsville coming up next week.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
We appreciate it, brother.

Speaker 4 (30:05):
I always look forward to it.

Speaker 9 (30:06):
Guys, have a great rest of your week.

Speaker 5 (30:08):
All right there, he goes Nick osin from twenty four
to seven Sports. The Badgers win eighty six fifty five,
which leads to a very happy Greg Guard. We're gonna
hear his conversation with Matt Lepey and Brian Butch coming
up on the other side. This is the Jane Case
Curty Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
Not to wait, my rap ball is loose Carrington on
the floor and Carrington comes up with it. Now winter
ahead to Jones, He'll seed Roady for three ride side
off the rim, No three bound Norland winter hen he
sends it down hard and Nolan winsor has himself a
double double nineteen points, ten rebounds, and he gets there

(30:51):
emphatically at sixty five thirty six, Wisconsin.

Speaker 5 (30:57):
Welcome back to the Jay and Case Curty Solutions Basketball
postgame Show. Jay and K Security Solutions can give you

K can integrate your world. Visit jksecurity dot com. Dave
Gasper here with you alongside Nick bruce Witz after this
Badger's eighty six fifty five win over Ball State. Leading

(31:18):
scorer for the Badgers, Nolan winterned nineteen points with ten
boards and it makes for a very happy Greg Guard
as they were in control of this game from the
from the get go, and Greg Guard he caught up
with Matt Lepey and Brian Butch afterwards. Let's hear his
conversation right here.

Speaker 2 (31:38):
The head coach now joins us court side after this
eighty six to fifty five win over the Ball State Cardinals.
We're just we'll just pick up on what coach what.
Butcher and I were talking about how these young guys
are kind of learning. We touched on it with Will
Garlock the other night. He had picked up some fouls
and then in the game against Northern Illinois early and
then he cleaned that up. He didn't score, but he

(32:01):
can deliver it. He's got to.

Speaker 10 (32:04):
Yeah, and at seven to one, you know, but she
knows what like being big and be able to pass.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
He passed much at least practice. I did practice because.

Speaker 7 (32:15):
Bo would yell at me otherwise, and you would yell
at me for the scout team.

Speaker 10 (32:18):
But possible, you couldn't win. You're gonna get up on
both ends. Uh, No, he does. And he's got a
really good feel, a good touch on the ball. You know,
he's unselfish. So yeah, I mean every every experience and
every second, every minute he gets, along with Hayden, along
with Alexus, I think they're all it's all good for them.

Speaker 7 (32:42):
But your bigs did in general, your whole bigs did
a really good job with a high low passing, taking
enough time, enough ball fakes to create the over the top. Now,
obviously the way that ball stake guarded it by switching
at me, you know, one of those things you have
to take advantage of. But how did you think your
BIG's handled and what was a miss? Just an awkward games?

(33:03):
I thought.

Speaker 10 (33:03):
I thought that the Alexis and Will came in that
first half and really gave us a boost.

Speaker 4 (33:08):
I mean, we we extended our.

Speaker 10 (33:09):
Lead when they were in the game, and they really
plug the paint, controlled the glass, found each other some
in the high low No, I thought they gave us
a real surge and that's what I told Rap and
Winter when they go back, it went back in like
play Like these two guys just played and they really
helped us. So you know, I think when they're doing
the switching and they're parking a guy and the paint,

(33:31):
the third guy and the paint, you know, we've got
to continue to We found shooters at times in the
corner over the top of that clogged lane, but that's
something we still got to continue to work on and read.
And we see it, but we don't instinctively read it
all the time. We see it when we pointed out,
we see it on film, but we within the flow
of the game, there's times we don't unless we really diagram,

(33:54):
and we we got to continue to read that and
play instinctively out of it.

Speaker 7 (33:58):
How hard of a game is it to coaching a
game like this and then get your guys to stay
dialed in for the entirety of the game. Because you
guys took the leader early, you get out to a
good lead, and now all of a sudden, it's just
you know, human nature. Okay, let's be a little bit
more passive at times.

Speaker 8 (34:13):
And then how long how long have you been around me? Well,
and but that was my point, and I tell, what
do you think that time about? But that was my
point to be after whatever turnover it was, here's a
top exactly. But but I think that's one of those
things is you as a coach, like you've been through
enough of these where your guys came out they answered
right away, but.

Speaker 7 (34:33):
Now you got to keep pulling them along.

Speaker 4 (34:35):
You gotta have it like there. It's got to be
tough somewhat to coach him just because it's I mean, no,
that's the nice I say.

Speaker 10 (34:42):
The thing I said probably the most tonight is play
the game the right way, play the game the right way.
And if we weren't playing the game the right way,
that means we're probably tired and we need to come out.
So come and sit down for a little while and
uh see Mike, and uh you know, so I thought
that the luxury of having a deep bench, and especially

(35:03):
in these type of games where you can you can
reward playing the game the right way and remind and
take a little time out or breather when you're not
playing the game the right way.

Speaker 2 (35:15):
You know, Michael Lewis just walked by, and that's that's
who coach cart was was talking to there. Did you
ask him, you know, Bob Knight show them all that
zone defense.

Speaker 10 (35:25):
It was a four letter where the coach Night, Uh No,
He's told me a few few Nights stories, but none
that we can put on the air. It's it's as
we talked free games.

Speaker 2 (35:36):
So we mentioned before the game we were talking about
things that you're learning and you're still learning, and we
could have the same conversation and in January probably you're
still learning about this team. But the path is pretty
good for this many newcomers, transfers, freshmen. It's pretty encouraging,
isn't it.

Speaker 10 (35:51):
Yeah, we're pretty connected for the most part. There was
a stretch in the first half way I thought, speaking
of good basketball, we played bad basketball. Took a time
out there at one point to kind of remind us
how we had to play. And yeah, I think it's
you know there, we're getting better, you know, And I
think that's always when you got a lot of things
to get better at. But that's the encouraging sign is

(36:13):
that this group is a they're a together group. They're
connected and it doesn't always look like it, but in
terms of just personalities and how the locker room is
connected and you know, and hopefully we're getting better, which
I think we are. I thought, you know, I thought
Carrington gave us some great minutes tonight. I think I'm
just getting more and more confidence in him and learning
what his game is and and trusting him more. And

(36:36):
he obviously he obviously played well tonight. All right, appreciate
your time. Patrick Herby is eager to escort you to
the to the media center, so it's.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
I'm much rather hang out with.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
That tells you a lot about the media people, so
I appreciate it. By the way, the line shut off
in there, so there, by the way, nice touch tonight.
You're busy with your with the recognition for the veterans,
asking that that's even one of our.

Speaker 10 (37:04):
Officials, Alfred Smith is a is a veterans. Okay, Yeah,
Happy Veterans Day all the vets out there, and thank
you for everything you've done.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Well said, I appreciate it, alank you. Badgers s head
coach Greg Guard joining us as Wisconsin defeats ball State
eighty six, two fifty five.

Speaker 5 (37:19):
All right, there was Badgers head coach Greg Guard, and
we echoed the sentiments as well of the head coach
about happy Veterans Day to all the veterans out there. Nick,
any final thoughts after this Badger's victory here tonight.

Speaker 6 (37:33):
As maybe lame as it sounds, I just want to
get through this next game Monday because the real season
starts with BYU next Friday. I'm not trying to overlook
an opponent, sorry, si Ue, but anytime you got more
than two letters in your name, maybe you're starting to
question if there's a capability beating these Badgers.

Speaker 5 (37:53):
Yeah, especially more than three, because I mean that's just
way too many. But yeah, the Badgers players themselves can't
really look ahead past them, but we certainly kind of are.
But that game is coming up on Monday against SIU Edwardsville.
That's the next time we are going to be back
in action here with you on the Janek Security Solutions

(38:14):
Basketball postgame Show for Nick Osen joining us every single
week from twenty four to seven Sports for Nick Brucewitz,
for our producer Casey James.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
I am Dave Gasper. Thank you for listening.

Speaker 5 (38:25):
This has been the jane K Security Solutions Basketball Postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
Then bound to Hayden Jones. He'll jog it up the
floor as time will expire. The Badgers will approve two
three and zero one more game with a home stand
coming up Monday night against SIU Edwardsville. Thirty one point
win for the Badgers here Tonight

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
