network studio. This is Matt Lepey. We welcome to you
two Wisconsin Basketball as the two and oh Badgers taking
on the two and OH Ball State Cardinals, game three
of this four game season opening home stand, which will
wrap up Monday night when the Badgers host SIU Edwardsville

and then they head out west for a while. But
first things first, Ball State there's still is great guard
bench and Butchie you'll still learn some things about his
team very early in the season. Chance to learn a
few more things tonight. As you mentioned about a half
an hour ago, get off to a good start, which
is exactly what they did on Friday against Northern Illinois.

Yeah, and it starts by guarding the ball defensively. Right.

This ball State team, the team that wants to get downhill,
they want to get to the rim, they want to try.

To finish with some dunks.

Do that I think offensively makes you take care of
the basketball.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
And those are simple things.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
But in a game like this, that's what's gonna matter,
is the simple things You don't need to complicate it.
There's no reason to do that. Just foul the rules
you have in place. Take care of it. Make sure
you slow down the driving lanes that ball State wants
to do. They want to get there. Take care of
your rim, both on the offense been and defense. Vendue
could be just fine.

Nick Boyd coming off a career high twenty five points
in his second game as a Badger, as good as
he was at FAU and at San Diego State, twenty
five representing a career high for him. We observe the

These Badger fans have been entertained through the first couple
of regulars easing games ninety six points against Campbell ninety
seven against Northern Illinois. The difference was the Campbell game,
they had to get separation later in the second half,
and they got separation right away against Northern Illinois. Got

defensive set of the night, and just what a coach

would want to see every night. Easier said than done,
but so we mentioned, we'll see what they can do
against the ball State team, butchie in Northern Illinois a
completely new roster. Ball State has ten newcomers for returnees.
As we mentioned on Friday, it's difficult to be a
college coach, period, but in conferences like the Mid America, man,
it's really it's really a challenge.

Well it is, and one of the things that coach
Lewis talked about was, Hey, we're gonna get guys that
want to compete. We want a competitive spirit. That's what
this team is going to play with. As far as
skill level, meshing, how you come together, like, that's all
gonna take time. But if you get guys that are
going to compete, you're going to have a team that
is going to give every other team they play a challenge.
And this is what I expect from that ball st

eight team to be able to bring that energy and
find ways to just keep clawing and finding ways to
play together and get some results.

It was interesting and talking with Great Guard in our
pregame interview, we can all be guilty of recency bias,
and I raised my hand at that, But when you
had ten players who are buying for minutes, it makes
for very competitive practices, right. I mean, you guys have
always you guys had very competitive practice. Ball wasn't going

to have it any other way. But when you have
at least ten with a legitimate stake in earning time
on the floor, you know, we get to see the practices,
but everybody else you can imagine how hotly contested all
those scribbage situations are.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Right well, And I think that's the beautiful thing about
it because it gives coaches flexibility as far as hey, okay,
we're going to make sure we come in practice.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
This is what we want to do.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
We want to get it done quickly and then we
can get out of it and see what happens next.
And so you don't have to wear down so early
on to kind of get that that message across to
your team, because if you've got ten guys that could
play and somebody doesn't show up, to practice.

Guess what, you're on the other team.

Message delivered very loud and clear, that that's how do
you get through to college players. Well, you don't play them, yeah,
or you don't put them on the first team, then
you put them on the scout team. Message delivered very

Yeah, Hey, what thing you pointed out? I want to
get to this before we tim the in game growth
of someone like a Will Carlock got a couple of
tough fouls early in the game, three tough fouls, didn't
keep verticality was reaching a little bit, and then and
then you know, Greg puts it back out there and
he doesn't make the same mistake. And this guy is
he's learning on the fly at this level, and that

tells you that he's paying attention. That was pretty impressive,
