Speaker 1 (00:19):
Now, here's your hosts, Dave Gasper and Nick Bruce.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Aways Welcome into the j and K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame Show. I'm your host Dave Gasper joined by Nick
Bruce Wiz. The Fighting Camels put up a fight, but
they were no match for the Wisconsin Badgers, who pull
away for a ninety six sixty four season opening victory.
(00:42):
We invite you to join the conversation with us on
the hotline. Six oh eight three two one thirteen ten
is the number two call in how impressed were you
with the Badgers in this game? Six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. The Badgers go on and increa
edible run in the second half to turn this game
(01:02):
into an absolute laugher. With eight minutes to go, Campbell
had pulled to within five. It was a sixty seven
to sixty two game. There was consternation in the building,
but then the Badgers' offense found it stride and went
on a twenty nine to two run to finish the
game over the last seven and a half minutes for
a thirty two point victory. Nick Campbell was giving Wisconsin
(01:25):
one hell of a fight, but they just seemed to
run out of gas in the second half.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah, it felt like the Badgers played the game they
needed to in the first half and that Campbell was
just knocking down the shots that that were coming to them.
But the reality ended up being that once with Sconson
started to be a little lax of days ago with
their effort in protecting the ball, in the second half,
Campbell was ready to take advantage of it and they
made this one a fight. You felt the energy here
(01:52):
get a little anxious from the fan base, and you
thought that, okay, gosh, we've watched them play close with
UW platform. Maybe that is the team that they might
be at this point in the year. Maybe there is
some growing pains to be had with a new group
here at the Cole Center. But John Blackwell Andrew Roady,
they put.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
The team on their back.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Nick Boyd ends up then getting on a run there
late in the game. Austin Rapp as well and twenty
nine to two is a remarkable finish to a game,
especially when you felt like for the majority of the
contest it wasn't evenly matched contest, and then it ended
up being what we thought it would be a blowout
win for Wisconsin. They came in twenty and a half
(02:34):
point favorites and they end up blowing that number out
of the water. But you wouldn't have thought it was
gonna happen for seventy five percent of this game.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, it was a game where Wisconsin was in control
of it largely. I mean, they were out in front
for the bulk of this game, leading for thirty one
minutes of it. But Campbell was always kind of hanging around.
They're always just kind of a couple of shots away,
always within kind of a round ten until that last
little stretch there. I was thinking as we were going
(03:04):
through kind of the early stages of the second half,
thinking back till last season at the start of the
year when they played Holy Cross somewhat similarly where it
was a fairly close game throughout and then Wisconsin pulled away.
Late Montana State as well, their second game of the
season was a fairly close matchup. Ultimately, Wisconsin got double
digit wins in both of those games, but still it
(03:27):
was fairly closer at the first part of it before
Wisconsin pulled away, and Wisconsin pulled away in a big way.
Here ninety six sixty four and if you want to
join the conversation, six oh eight, three, two, one, thirteen,
ten is the number to call in. And the offense
was led by John Blackwell. I know, big surprise there.
Thirty one points for Blackwell ten of nineteen, shooting six
(03:49):
of eleven from three. Blackwell stepped up. I mean he
was a consistent piece offensively throughout this entire game. Seventeen
points in the first half, fourteen in the second.
Speaker 6 (04:00):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Nick, Just watching John Blackwell take this next step forward
as he is here in his third season with the Badgers.
It has just been fantastic to watch him grow and
it seems like he's on the verge of taking that
next step.
Speaker 7 (04:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
He seems to be one of those guys that you
felt was being underappreciated coming into this season, you know,
preseason All conference team guy, but last year it felt
like he was left off to those conference teams and
shouldn't have been. And thirty one points ten of nineteen shooting.
He knocks down six triples. You know, maybe he learned
(04:36):
a thing or two from John Todj last year. That's
the stat line you would see from a guy like
Tanjay with his shooting ability, with what we knew him
to be and perfect from the free throw line, his
ability to kind of be that calming factor, be that
consistent offensive force for this group. Right, he ends up
getting seventeen in the first half, fourteen in the second half.
(04:58):
You know, that level of consistency is what you're kind
of looking for. Do you expect him to put up
thirty one points an, I know, but if you can
get double digits in both halves, I think that's strong
and I think that's an output that that would be
certainly beneficial to this program. If they could look at
him and say, yeah, he's gonna get twenty points and
he's gonna spread the wealth between halves. He's not gonna
(05:18):
look like a bipolar shooter out there. He's gonna be
able to do it throughout the entire game.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Yeah, And I think that's what Greg gard is expecting
from him this year. I think with what he is
as a guard, as one of the leaders on this team,
the guy who's been here for the last couple of seasons.
As you try and mesh in all these other guys
in the starting lineup, all the transfers to Nick Boyd's
and Andrew Roadies, the Austin Raps of the world, trying
to mesh them into the offense and have them fit
(05:43):
in with what John Blackwell and Nolan Winter have put
together as the returning starters from last season. That's incredibly important.
What he's going to bring scoring wise, what he brings
defensively to get those guys going. And Nick Boyd is
one of those newcomers. As we've talked about, twenty one
points in this game, just the one turnover, and when
(06:06):
we saw in the exhibition game when Boyd had seven turnovers.
It's a great step forward for him. He had a
rough game last time out, but this time it's more
the shades of what you can expect from Nick Boyd
this season.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah, and I think Boyd, as you heard there in
the postgame and the conversation between guard Lapey and Butchy,
he plays with one speed and it's something that Wisconsin
almost has to coach out of him. There's value in
his speed, which is full go twenty four to seven, cutting,
driving to the rim, playing fast. But Wisconsin is that
(06:43):
advanced modern day offense that has a mix of everything.
And he's in his final year of college eligibility after
a long career here. This is year six. He was
at FAU then San Diego State. Out here, he's played
different brands of basketball, but he's kind of been allowed
to just play freely in the fur that he likes
to here at Wisconsin, he's going.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
To play that way. I'd argue you probably ninety percent
of the time.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
But he does get a little out of control and
he was going too fast and it led to some
quick turnovers in the second half.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
And Gardo compared him to Kershaw.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
We'll hear that again later in the program, mixing sports,
knowing what's on the top of his mind after this
past weekend's Game seven and remarkable World Series. But yeah,
Nick Boyds is stud Everyone here is fired up to
see him as a part of this team, and I'm
looking forward to how he can change things for this
group moving forward.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Yeah, and he clearly had an impact here in this one.
And yeah, that conversation in case you missed it earlier
of Greg Guard talking with will Pay and Butch That
will be coming up later on in the show. But yeah,
just a great all round offense performance from those guys.
He got four players in double digits in this game.
On top of Blackwell and Boyd, he had Nolan Winter
with seventeen points a double double for him in this game,
(07:55):
twelve rebounds as well for Winter, the big man getting
a lot of boards as well, and then Austin Rapp
with thirteen points, five of them coming at the free
throw line. So great to see a lot of those
guys get going offensively. Wisconsin needed it because they did
play some very close basketball there in the first about
thirty minutes or so of this game, and Campbell. Campbell
(08:19):
shot fifty nine percent in the first half. This Smith guy,
DJ Smith balling out to that that dude's a baller.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Yeah, it was very clear that that Smith was going
to come in here looking to prove something on a
bigger stage. It was game one for the head coach
on the other side after he came over this offseason,
Andre Sek.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
I believe is how you pronounce it.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
So these are a bunch of guys that are also
potentially playing in their first games officially with the Camels,
as Wisconsin has had a lot of roster turnover. Every
team in the country has to some degree. But Smith, nonetheless,
that dude can shoot. I'd imagine that they're going to
be a moving forward in their conference.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yeah, they are in the Colonial Athletic Association, the Campbell
Fighting Camels, that's their conference that they play in Wisconsin.
Starting off one to zero on the season, pulling away
for a ninety six sixty four victory over Campbell. And
coming up, we're gonna talk with Nick Osin from Badgers
(09:23):
two four seven. We're gonna get his thoughts on this
game to start the season. And also coming up, we
got fun facts with Dave on the other side, and
the facts are always more fun after a win, especially
a thirty two point win to start this season. That's
coming up next. You're not gonna want to miss it.
Stay tuned. This is a Jane K Security Solutions basketball
postgame show.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
He's up the middle front court, his past deflected by Blackwell,
stolen by Blackwell, hits two on two, John Shovelson in
a Winter Slam Dark Oh threading that pass the Nolan
Winter for the tun.

Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Brucewitz as the
Badgers get a ninety six sixty four win over the
Campbell Fighting Camels to open up the college basketball regular season.
(10:28):
And this game, it was a ten point game at half.
It was a five point game with about eight minutes
to go in the second half before Wisconsin pulled away
on a twenty nine to two run. In this game,
it was an incredible stretch of basketball. As Wisconsin pulled away,
it was sixty seven sixty two, and then Campbell ends
(10:49):
up with sixty four in Wisconsin ninety six. Just an
incredible run. A lot done offensively, and really the work
defensively as well. Nick, as this group only kind of
was able to batten down because Campbell shot fifty nine
percent in that first half of play and then in
the second half Campbell's shot just twenty eight percent from
(11:10):
the field.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Yeah, Wisconsin did a hell of a job kind of
going with the punches, rolling with the punches in the
first half.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
This is an offensive team.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
I think we've kind of come to that conclusion with
what we've seen from Wisconsin each of the last two years,
that this is going to be a team that can
lead with their offense and the defense is a work
in progress, as we saw through the majority of this
game giving up good looks to Campbell. Even when Wisconsin
went on that final twenty nine to two run, it
did start with some open looks for Campbell that they
(11:40):
simply just missed, some gimmes at the rim, and then
opportunities on the other end Wisconsin where it's hard to
get offensive looks that would work for them, And I
feel like Wisconsin's in a position now where you have
to see improvement defensively. Ninety six points will get it
done any night if you can look to that side
of the ball and feel convinced that defensively you can
(12:02):
hold a team to less than ninety six, which should
be the bare minimum at this point from a program
that we know to be pretty damn good.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
Yeah, exactly. You got to be able to hold the
other team to less than ninety six if you want
to win. But there were some highlights defensively. Jack Janicky
for steals all in the first half. You know, he
brings some energy off the bench. I think he's kind
of maybe going to feel that Kamari McGee kind of
roll as being one of the first guys off the
bench that is going to bring energy, that is going
(12:31):
to bring some tenacity, some moxie out there on the court,
if you will, Nick and Janicky. He seems to be
the guy to step up into that role. And he
was wreaking havoc on Campbell there in the first half.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Yeah, Janicky with the four steals and it felt like
bang bang bang bang.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
He stepped up big.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
You're always looking to find who's going to be that
guy off the bench. We had Kamaria McGee in attendance tonight,
a round of applause for him when they showed him
on the board in the second half.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
He was that guy.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
We saw it last year time and time again, and
even the year before. When you put McGee on the floor,
even if it was for five minutes like it was
two seasons ago, he made a massive impact. It felt
like he delivered in a role that was valuable to
this team. And JANICKI may not play a consistent amount
of minutes. We saw a lot in the first half,
not as much in the second half for him, but
the reality is you can rely on him to provide
(13:22):
something of value.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
And tonight defensively, he stepped up big.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Yeah, he really did. And it's a lot of fun
when players like that step up big. It's a lot
of fun to see Kamari McGee back at the Cole Center.
He only just graduated last year, so this is the
first game that the Badgers have had in a couple
of years without Kamaria McGee on the team. And he
couldn't stay away from the Cole Center because of course
he couldn't. He's fantastic and great to see him back
(13:46):
at the Cole Center. Very fun to see. And you know,
we do love fun things here on this show, Nick, right,
and that means that there are fun facts to be
had when we do love fun things. So when we
can have the fun facts as I'm trying to pull
up right.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
Now, you're good.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yeah, we have plenty of fun facts in the program
like this, Yeah, we do.
Speaker 5 (14:12):
It is just steps up and.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
It makes it so much more fun when when there
is a win, and when you can have wins, it
makes facts a lot more fun. As we go to
fun facts with Dave.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
Hey, have you.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
Ever heard me? Here's the term fun fact. I got
a couple of fun facts here because I have a
fun fact, you have a fun fact.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I do.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
First time in history this has happened at eight games,
five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists. Spent a
long time since we've seen a game like this.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
The fun out here, This game's fun.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Okay, I don't know if that fact is fun? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (14:48):
Are you fired up up for fun facts with Dave?
Al Right, the regular season is back. That means we
are back with fun facts with Dave, and the facts
are always more fun after a win. The Badgers start
the season one to oh, and Wisconsin is now undefeated
(15:09):
ten and oh in home openers under Greg Guard since
he's taken over, and the Badgers have won by an
average of twenty two point seven points in those games
coming into this. So after they're thirty two point one
here today, that number is going up. And they've also
won their home opener twenty seven of the last twenty
eight seasons. Now, next, sources tell me that that's pretty good.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
That's incredible. This is what the Badgers do.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
We've learned to appreciate this program for what it is,
and it's a Big ten contender annually no matter where
they're picked exactly.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
And one of the reasons that they are contender is
Nolan Winter as he gets his fourth career double double tonight,
his first of the season obviously, but fourth of his career.
Seventeen points, twelve rebounds, eight of twelve from the field,
So very efficient night for Nolan Winter as well. You'll
love to see that the big run in this game
(16:06):
came late.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
You know.
Speaker 4 (16:08):
Twenty nine to two was a couple of separate big runs.
It was a fifteen to nothing run, then two points
on free throws from from Campbell, and then another fourteen
to nothing run. But this is the first time for
the Badger scoring fifteen straight points in a game since
almost exactly a year ago November tenth, twenty twenty four
(16:29):
against Appalachian State. And when they went on that twenty
four to nothing run, remember that.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Nick, that was incredible. This is what this team does.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
This is what this offense can do when clicking right,
that they're able to just lay it on you. If
they can echo what they did tonight defensively in the
second half, pairing that with what you've seen from this
group well offensively so far, you feel pretty good about
what they can do moving forward.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
Yeah, Campbell in this game because their last couple of
points came on free throws, and even before that they
came on free throws. The last bucket that Campbell made
in this game came with ten to thirty five to
go in the second half, still in the first part
of the second half, a Smith three. That was the
(17:14):
last bucket. That was the last field goal Campbell made
in this game. Absolutely remarkable. John Blackwell was a big
part of this game as well. This was the third
thirty point game in John Blackwell's career, scoring thirty one
here tonight. The other two, Nick, do you remember them.
Speaker 3 (17:34):
The other thirty point games in John Blackwell's career.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
Yes, gosh, they happened last year.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
I'm going to remember them when you tell me them.
But like Michigan State was one.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Nope, not Michigan State.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
I know, Iowa was one.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
Iowa was one. Iowa was his career high thirty two points.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
Oh man, Was it a big ten game?
Speaker 1 (17:56):
No?
Speaker 4 (17:57):
It was non conference yea. We actually talked about it
today TRGV UTRGV. Absolutely he scored thirty points against ut
Rio Grand Valley last year, thirty two against Iowa and
that one hundred and sixteen point performance and also Wisconsin
scoring ninety six points in this game. Do you know
how many times they scored ninety six points or more
(18:19):
last season?
Speaker 5 (18:21):
Just once?
Speaker 4 (18:23):
Twice?
Speaker 7 (18:24):
Dang it.
Speaker 4 (18:25):
They scored over one hundred against Arizona last year and
then against Iowa when they scored one hundred and sixteen.
Speaker 5 (18:32):
So close.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
Yeah, this is this is one of the big offensive
performances for Wisconsin. They start out this year with an
absolute bang. And those are the fun facts with Dave
here on this season opening victory edition of the jan
K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show. And we're also gonna
have a lot more fun as Nick Osen from Badger
two four seven is going to join us on the
(18:54):
other side. We're gonna get his insight on this game.
He was just down there underneath the Cole Center talking
with Greg Guard and a couple of the players as well,
so we'll get his reaction to their thoughts on this game.
That's all coming up. Badgers win ninety six sixty four
over Campbell to start off this season. You're listening to
(19:15):
the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
It down stops right elbow feeds Blackwell for three, left
corner got it, whip a shot clock winding.
Speaker 7 (19:31):
Down two huge back to back.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Threes, seventy five sixty two wisconcert six point twenty remaining
in Madison.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
This is the JANK Security Solutions Basketball postgame show from
home security to automation, Jay and K Security Solutions. As
you covered, go to jksecurity dot com for more info.
As you heard in the highlight there the Badgers having
back to back threes to pull a way from the
Campbell Fighting Camels as they went on a fifteen to
(20:05):
nothing run there and then had another fourteen to nothing
run after that. Dave Gasper here alongside Nick Brucewidz joined
it now by twenty four to seven sports, Nick Osen
and Nick. That run that the Badgers went on there
to end the game combined twenty nine and two. It
led to this being a blowout. But how much unease
(20:25):
were you feeling when it was sitting there at a
five point game with eight minutes to go? And what
do you think was the key to Wisconsin being able
to go on that run late in this game?
Speaker 6 (20:35):
Yeah, guys, great to be back with you. You know,
I think, first and foremost, Dave, the the ease or
lack thereof. Look, I don't think I was fully, you know,
quite feeling that, but I will say I was looking
at my counterpart on my website and you know, a
couple of the other media guys like, hey, I kind
of expected a little bit more than this, you know,
so far, I would say, defensively, I think the offense,
(20:58):
we know what's capable, that had some turnovers and so on.
Now in terms of what really locked in the run, Dave,
and that was actually something I asked everybody. We just
spoke with the players, Campbell's coach as well as coach
Guard about that defensive intensity. You know, the guys essentially
just took their efforts as well as their execution up
one or two notches and just kind of shut the
(21:19):
game down, taking away really any chance for the fighting
Campbell's to make a comeback. And I give a world
of credit to those guys because they did hang in
this game for thirty three thirty four minutes. But we
saw that ceiling piece right for the Badgers late. Now
it's going to be, of course, about establishing that consistency.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
Guys talking about consistency.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
You heard from Guard in the post game. I'm sure
you did down in the presser about Nick Boyd. It
felt like this guy at any moment can just turn
it on and get.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
To the bucket. Get to the bucket.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
Did to the bugget, but he got little out of
control early in the second half. It led to some
early turnovers. What is it about Nick Boyd that you
think they could still channel and make better about his game.
Speaker 6 (21:59):
That's a great question, Bruce. You know, I think that
I know where you're referring to, right, And I just
looked and it was actually even a little bit less turnovers.
Then I thought it was actually still a four to
one assist a turnover, but there was one he had
one probably should have been one. There were some close moments. Look,
I think it's just about you know, Guard talks. It's funny,
he's very consistent with He talks about sometimes you got
(22:20):
to know when you're in a school zone, right, it's
a safe zone. Sometimes you can kind of go up
to speed. I personally think it's even a little bit
less than that. And maybe just when you do take
those moments, Nick making sure you are careful with that ball,
because there were times he got a little bit lucky.
I remember once in the first half two should have
been a turnover ended up he forced like a tie up.
(22:41):
So I think it's just maybe a little bit even
less of knowing when. And more so, hey, when you
are hitting the jets and you trust yourself, which we
all saw, I mean, why wouldn't you. It's a fun
aspect and way to play. You just have to be
able to kind of be fully in control. I will
say I thought his decision making was for the most part,
really good. I think four to one as turnovers you'll take.
(23:02):
And obviously I mean in that stretch, especially Nick and Dave,
it was tough not to watch that two man game thinking, hey,
if this is a late February early March game, you've
got too high level top What would you say, THIRTI
ish guards in the country.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
Yeah, let alone take right.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
I mean, do you feel like you got arguably that
best one two points at that guard spot if they're
playing their best game?
Speaker 4 (23:25):
Yeah, and Nick boyd, I mean twenty one points in
this one bonus fun fact here from fun Facts with Dave.
His twenty one points are the second highest total in
a Badger's debut since two thousand, second behind only John
Tanjay last year with twenty three against Holy Cross, and
(23:46):
you know, kind of stepping into that that kind of
role there as a guard John Blackwell, the other John
from last year's one two John Combo. John Blackwell had
himself a fantastic game here as well, Nick with thirty
one points ten of nineteen shooting. Is this kind of
I mean, we've talked about Blackwell stepping into a bigger
(24:06):
role this season now as a junior. You know, do
you think that this is a big part of him
taking that next step forward? Dave, I do.
Speaker 6 (24:16):
It's funny that was a major kind of aspect that
we were talking about downstairs. Great question by a couple
other reporters, and you know it was discussed and myself
included with this. But his mentality, Dave, I think has
really taken the jump. I told you guys that a
couple of weeks ago, very fortunately after I spoke with
him in Chicago, and it's just like this guy has
gone from to me obviously a lot of what I do,
(24:38):
Dave is recruiting, right, So a fun story, Oh maybe
a diamond in the rough early to this is one
of the key players last year to hey, guys, this
is a superstar and it's going to be part of
my column that I write for tomorrow. Wisconsin, I think
you have another true superstar. I don't throw that word off.
And especially in college basketball, all these big players are
well he is. I mean, what you saw it felt
(25:00):
like he still didn't have to give that full hundred,
ten hundred and fifteen percent late. I mean early on
he was just kind of almost toying with the defensive times.
I still want to, you know, continue to see the
consistency with which he can finish through contact because if
he does that and shooting like he did tonight, Dave,
for the college level, he is unstoppable.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Then, talking about Blackwell and kind of extrapolating it out
into into this year, when Blackwell came in as a freshman,
it kind of felt like he was number three on
the pecking order of what people were excited to see
from his class. Right It felt Winter and Gus Yalden
at the time, Gus Busts. People were feeling pretty good
about those two, and then John was kind of under
(25:40):
that in terms of attention.
Speaker 5 (25:43):
You look at this year's class. What has happened so far?
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Tonight's the first official game towards Red Shirts, et cetera.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
What do you make it? Guys like Garlock and Kinsinger.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
I know we had a discussion about him and what
you've seen so far from the class of twenty five.
Speaker 6 (25:55):
Yeah, a lot of I think what I expected, right,
I mean, now we're seeing, Okay, Garlock's not a retcher,
which I didn't think he would, you know, but he
was one that I thought his role was a little
bit less clear cut than maybe a Beeluskis or Jones.
And I think it's a smart decision because they'll need
him and Garlock at that type of position. You really
learn from getting these reps. I did think it was
(26:17):
interesting that Kinzerger didn't get in, you know, obviously, and
they kept Janicki in. Now, it's one game that's not
something to write a full story on, but it is
something guys to keep in mind because the guard depth,
and specifically that combo guard is so deep. He's a
Wisconsin kid, loves the program, will be a great fit.
Is it maybe gonna be like a potential retcher here
type of him? Is it just a one game sample
(26:39):
size we will see. But other than that, Nick, I
thought that, you know, Garlock looks naturally ready right now.
I think Beieluskis did some good things. I just want
to see them kind of get their aggressiveness up a
little bit. But I want to give will credit Garlock.
He could easily was on this near hoop for us.
He could have gone up and finished maybe against a defender.
Pump Fakes bounced it, jb under the cup for a
(27:01):
nice assistant on nan one, just a smart play. I
think there's a lot of excitement and just real quick
credit to guard in this group because this was just
as I was getting here.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Guys.
Speaker 6 (27:11):
John Blackwell was not talked about in the way that
y Alden was or necessarily Winter and there's no question
he's a ten plus year pro potentially NBA guys. So
just the way that these guys stick to kind of
what they look for progress development.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Hats off to the stat Nick Osin from twenty four
to seven Sports. As always, Nick, we appreciate you hopping

Speaker 4 (27:51):
Thank you all right there, he goes Nick Osen from
twenty four to seven sports, joining us as he will

Coming up on the other side, Greg Guard his conversation
with Matt Leape and Brian Butch. After this one, Wisconsin
wins ninety six sixty four over the Campbell Fighting Camels
(28:12):
to open this season. You're listening to the Jank Security
Solutions Basketball postgame show.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Sets to the offense for Greg Guard's team coming up
with the final two minutes of the game board with
a pass for Roadie Smith overplays. Now here's wrapping the lane,
turns of Blackwell three shot right corner, Thank you Blackwell
with thirty one and it's ninety two to sixty four
Wisconsin with a minute forty eight remaining.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Welcome back to the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
Jay and K Security Solutions can give you the power
you never thought possible. Learn how Jank can integrate your
world visit jksecurity dot com. Dave gasper here alongside Nick
Brucewitz as the Badger's win in ninety six sixty four
over the Campbell Fighting Camels to open the season. They
(29:05):
have won their home opener ten years in a row
now and twenty seven of the last twenty eight seasons,
and all those last ten years that they've won it,
it has been under head coach Greg Guard, and Greg
Guard has to be very pleased with the way that
this game ended a thirty two point victory. As he
met up with our Matt Leape and Brian Butch after
(29:25):
the game.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Greg Guard makes his way to our court side location
ninety six to sixty four, a winner over Campbell in
a game that, again, I think the fans are getting
a little bit nervous. It's a five point game, eight
and halfpen is to play. I don't like dialing up
at twenty nine to two run though, Greg bet.
Speaker 8 (29:46):
Yeah, how many I think you can see we're still
trying to I say, we have water in our gas tank.
At times we sputter, but we didn't sputter the last
eight nine minutes, So that was that was good to
see a couple couple adjustments, and then I thought Andrew
Roady was really good a catalyst for us defensively. JANICKI
was in the first half some steals and deflections and
(30:08):
got us going a little bit, and I thought Rody
really was the integral part of just completely shutting off
their water there in the last eight nine minutes.
Speaker 7 (30:17):
Did you feel that because you guys were scoring the basketball,
your defense was better? Is that one of the things.
Speaker 8 (30:24):
And I think with this group is learning every possessions,
learning for him because we've got so many guys that
haven't played in this defensive system, and we have four
guys doing it right, and then one guy gets beat baseline,
and then four guys do it right, and then somebody
gets beat off the driven and we don't rotate. So
they're just you know, breakdowns that we have to learn from.
As I told them just now, we next time we
(30:46):
come out, we have to be better, but they will.
And I think that's one they know when they when
things we have to get better at. You know, you
you know, nineteen assists, only nine turnovers, force nineteen turnovers.
Speaker 4 (31:03):
That was good.
Speaker 8 (31:04):
You know, we may bank some threes there, you know,
we're better at the free throw line tonight than what
we were.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
So there are a lot of things.
Speaker 8 (31:11):
We went from they've shoot sixty percent the first half
to twenty nine in the second. That's a step in
the right direction. So just to keep stepping in the
right direction.
Speaker 7 (31:20):
Well, it's also now you've played two exhibition games, but
this one counts, and you know your team's back is
a little bit against the wall. You know, if Kevil
makes that layup, it's a three point game. Then they
go twenty nine two. You have to be happy with response.
Speaker 8 (31:32):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, no, I think you know, and
Will Garlock I think too. Give us some good minutes
and think just a physical, big body presence, and you know,
I think that's with the rotation and keep I'm still
learning it, trying to figure out combinations.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
Obviously.
Speaker 8 (31:49):
You know, Blackwell's a mainstay for the most part, just
because he settles us down in so many ways and
navigates things in so many ways. But to continue to
roll those other four bakes through and continue to wear
down the other team's front line, which is you know,
I think what we were able to do. You know,
as we went came down the stretch.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
It's game one, but you just mentioned Blackwell thirty one
points tonight. They're just stretches of games where he's just
got that confidence like I'm really good and I want
to show everything.
Speaker 8 (32:17):
Yeah, it just comes so easy to him, you know,
I think he just the game is in slow motion,
which always is with the experienced good players. You know,
he's talking to me about what he's seeing, and you know,
whether it's dead balls or just little things here and
there that you can tell. He's just he's got a
very mature mind and approach and a view of what's
going on in the court. He doesn't get too high,
(32:37):
doesn't get too low. Just he's pretty steady and he's
very intuitive in terms of what he's seeing on the court.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
And you get you mentioned Rody. You get these guys
who come in from other programs, which is obvious how
good the coaching was for like a guy like Rody
along the way and Nick Boyd as well. You see
the development in different ways. Here fans are watching a
I guess some more finished product. I don't know if
that's quite the right description, but mature guys you could
just tell they came from programs where right they know
(33:07):
that's important.
Speaker 8 (33:08):
I mean we've we that's something we talk about in recruiting,
specifically in the.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
Portal who have they played for?
Speaker 8 (33:15):
Because we can tell, we can tell when it's really good,
who they've played for and what they've been taught, and
we can also tell the other end of it too.
So I think that's something as this is obviously still
relatively new, you know, two or three years into it,
it's something that we continue to put a premium on
and and really you know, take that, take that piece
(33:37):
of it as part of our evaluation. That's important.
Speaker 7 (33:39):
Well that's what I got for you. How'd you feel
Nick Boyd played as far as the first game? You know,
the catalyst is your point guard. He gets out quick. Yeah,
he's got twenty one points, but there's still a learning
curve as far as what what expectations are as well too.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (33:52):
Yeah, I think the thing where he can continue to
improve is game management. I think that's when there's there's
times when he gets there, times when he has one
speed and and he can't have one speed. There's a
time to you know, dial it back a little bit.
In the second half, Flurry of Turner started with him
attacking and throwing a Clayton Kershaw not an eighty eight
(34:14):
one like he threw like he throws it now or
as he retires, But in the prime Clayton Kershaw whistled
one that I don't think even Johnny Bench was gonna
be able to catch that one. So just those things,
just the feel and the game management, and we're got
to help him with that.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
All right, one down, off we go. Fun to watch.
Go see Kamari McGee in the house here tonight. So
Killer McGee's back in at some point. You were going
to get him in there, right, go in there and
go make some plays. Well, yeah, it's fun. Fun to
see that, fun to see, you know, guys like we
were talking about the Utah organization. There was the clips
the Utah address. Yeah, Krawd, Tanjay and then Max Klesmen
(34:53):
all getting involved in one play. But fun, fun to
see that.
Speaker 8 (34:56):
Kind it is. It is they're enjoying playing the game,
and that's that's the fun part. Tell me keep playing
a bottle time father, real job other type. Lock on
your door soon enough. Appreciate it, Greg Bah, thank you.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
When number one for the Wisconsin Badgers is they defeat
Campbell tonight ninety six to sixty four.
Speaker 4 (35:15):
All right, there was Badgers head coach Greg Guard talking
with Matt Lepey and Brian Butch after this win, a
ninety six sixty four victory over Campbell, talking about Nick
Boyd in there as well. Twenty one points. Still still
some things to learn, nick, uh, you know, trying to
maybe not throw as fastball as hard as possible, trying
(35:36):
to learn some different speeds. But overall does a job
well enough here in this game for the Badgers to
pull away.
Speaker 5 (35:42):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 3 (35:44):
I think that you look at the final score this one,
and it tells a story that doesn't necessarily reflect on
what the game actually was, but I think is far
closer to what the expectation was. It's not necessarily about
the journey, it's about the final result. And the final
result tonight kind of reflect did what we expected from
a Badgers group that had proven over the last two years,
(36:04):
in particular to be really effective offensively.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
Yeah, and they were very effective tonight, ninety six points.
And now we are off and running on the regular
season here for the Badgers. These games count. Now, this
game counts, and we are seeing scores just kind of
across the board here in college basketball Louisville putting up
ninety three points already on SC State ninety three thirty two.
(36:31):
That game is kind of looking around the country here
with some college basketball scores. It is really just fantastic
to see college basketball get underway. It should be a
national holiday according to Brian Butch, as he talked about
multiple times. But wins across the Big Ten here, Illinois
beating Jackson State one thirteen to fifty five, Michigan wins
(36:52):
one twenty one to seventy eight over Oakland, Northwestern wins
over Mercyhurst seventy to forty seven, and Minnesota over Gardner
Web eighty seven to sixty. So a lot of these
bye games buy games here to start the season again.
Wins across the Big Ten, and Wisconsin gets theirs ninety
(37:14):
six sixty four. Nick. Any final thoughts on this Badger's
victory before we wrap things up here for tonight.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Yeah, Austin Rapp, I think he needs some love here
as well. I thought that this was a guy that
in the two exhibition games showed to be rather effective,
and had those games counted, he would have been off
to an incredible start to his official UW career. Tonight,
he puts in thirteen. He had some timely shots, making
two threes.
Speaker 5 (37:38):
At that height.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
I do think that he's going to be one of
those kind of X factor guys the rest of this
season in that starting lineup.
Speaker 4 (37:45):
Yeah, ends up being a pretty quiet thirteen points, but
nonetheless a very solid performance from him, and no turnovers
as well for rep So that's another big thing to
point out here as he's able to control the ball
as well, and and that'll do it for us. Next
up for the Badgers will be a Friday night when
(38:05):
they take on Northern Illinois. That game at the Cole Center.
Tip Off will be at seven thirty pm. For our producer,
Casey James, for Nick Osen who joined us from twenty
four to seven Sports. For Nick Bruswitz, I am Dave Gasper.
Thank you so much for listening to the jan K
Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show. We are excited to be

for Nick and I's third season covering this team doing
this postgame show. We're excited for it and we appreciate
all of you thing tuned to listen to us throughout
this season. Once A, getting your final score, tonight, Wisconsin
at ninety six Campbell sixty four. This has been the
(38:50):
Jane K Security Solutions Basketball postgame show.
Speaker 2 (38:54):
Daniel Marcellinis the rebound, five seconds to play, Colombe Rose
Reye side, Gregory Pump eight now three in the airs
off the rim and the Badgers win it on Opening Night. Well,
Campbell gave the Badgers a pretty good push for a
good chunk of this game, and then the Badgers just
went off and those final eight and a half minutes
(39:15):
and Wisconsin ends up winning by thirty two
