This is matt Leapey. Welcome to Wisconsin Basketball. Welcome to
game two of the one hundred and twenty eighth season
of Wisconsin basketball. The one and O Badgers and the
one to oh Northern Illinois Husky's a team with a

completely new roster from a year ago, but they got
off to a really good start against Louisiana Monroe.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
The Badgers took a little time, but.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Then went into lockdown mode a twenty nine to two
run to turn what was a tight game into a
thirty two point win. But Brian Butcher greg Guard saying,
even though Campbell didn't get a bucket in the last
ten and a half minutes, he still wants to see
his defense show improvement because they did have some trouble
against the Campbell team that actually might not be too bad.

Well, I think Campbell's really good to start. Let's start
there is they played close game against West Virginia. But
because Wisconsin team defense, if they want to be where
they want to get, that's you know, top fifteen as
far as defense, and right now, even even with that performance,
you know they were, they're still top thirty. Now it's
one weekend, but there's still areas of improvement, for sure.

We talk a lot about honorary captains, you know with
the football program. Nick Kayden will be the honorary captain
tomorrow for the football game. The Peedigu family the honorary
captains here at tonight and one of the great, the
great names, the great people in basketball in our state.
We lost Jerry Pettige. Just a remarkable career. The coaching

skinks for itself, but the contributions to the sport in
this state and just another great touch from coach guard
the Wisconsin Basketball is a little recognizing the family here too.

Yeah, and I use the word selfless. He wanted to
grow the game of basketball in this state. And a
kid that you know went to Appleton West and you know,
had a chance of playing the state tournament and what
he was able to make this state tournament every year
is amazing. It's what every kid wants to do. They
want to come to the Coles Center, they want to
play that. And what he's done to grow the game,

the game of basketball right now in Wisconsin, the high
school game especially is in such a great spot because
of coach pediguw.

It's interesting you say that because I was talking last
year with Lance Randall, who's a Wisconsin guy thing through,
but he coached, He's coached all over the world, not
to mention all over the United States, And I sat
down with him for an interview last year and he
mentioned that about just, you know, the growth of high
school basketball, the great place that it's in, the terrific
coaching that exists, and you know, we all know the

talent now, but it's just it's just really well done.
And you met you Jerry Pettigrew's had more than a
little to do with it.

Yes, this and this Wisconsin team has two freshmen that
you know aren't going to have impacts.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
You're going to see what they're gonna do.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
And obviously in the transfer portals it's tougher to have
freshmen be able to help. But you've got two local
kids here, and you know, we saw what Will Garlock
can do. You know, you know, as far as Zach
kenzon Jer what he's gonna do and help his team,
you know, who knows if it's this year, Nick, But
like both those guys, Wisconsin growing kids that have grown
up here, and it goes back to what we were

just talking about Coach Pettigrew and the understanding of we
need to invest in our kids and we need to
give hi an opportunity to flourish and have success.

Yeah, that's the interesting part here because we're seeing the
Badgers recruit internationally. We know that the Minneapolis that area
has been great to Wisconsin. But when you can always
means something when you can get a couple of your own,
so to speaker, and you mentioned the possess with Zach
Kenzinger and Will Garl like we're seeing Will get some
it's a pretty good run here.

They've got a lot of guards.

So for Zach, as you said, you know, we'll see
how the year goes, but he is someone who has
a very, very promising future here with the with the
Wisconsin Badgers. So we get ready for tip here Wisconsin

the Huskies will play in the Mid America Conference. They

moved to the Horizon League for basketball next year, to
the Mountain.

Well, and one of the things about this team is
they're good. They're they're new, but there's a lot of
talent there. And I think that's the biggest thing is
when you get a group together that's new, that also
wants to prove that we belong at this level, when
you come together from all over the place, Hey, we
want to show everybody we belong and this is what
we're doing.

And see if the Badgers can start well faster. Campbell
had them on their heels in the early minutes on
on Monday Night, the Badgers and not unlike in some
