Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the ber Basketball Postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Which that's all for three right sidebook.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Yet presented by JMK Security Solutions for home theaters to
smart lighting to a universal home control. Go online to
Jksecurity dot com for three of the tide background.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
No good.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Now here's your host Dave Gasper and Nick Bruce Awentz.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
Yeah, I felt like this one was a lot more
impressive because they had command from the get go. It
wasn't no point a contest. Northern Illinois had their chances
to go on small runs and they couldn't even really
put any.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Of that together as well.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
So most definitely their more dominant performance so far, and
I think that this is an opportunity for them to,
I think build off of this. I guess I'm conflating
the RT you mean here a little bit. I'm thinking
UW Plattville. As their last game, they crushed Campbell as well,
so they've crushed two opponents back to back here. But

(01:07):
it did feel like today was even more dominant because
I do think maybe the caliber of opponent was still
a slight bit higher tonight.

Speaker 5 (01:15):
Yeah, it certainly was. I mean the MAC you know,
it does have you know, quite a few good teams,
and generally the few good players and good teams that
they have, those players tend to transfer out shortly afterwards.
But Northern Illinois, I mean, they're looking at a completely
brand new, revamped roster this year. There are no returners
from last year. They've completely rebuilt this squad, and they

(01:39):
got some really good players over there as well. JJ
Taylor seventeen points in this game, nine to twelve from
the free throw line. He had himself a pretty good night.
Joe Atuca as well, and that last name does sound
somewhat familiar, and he had thirteen points in this game.
So they got some decent players, you know, they they

(02:01):
have played, uh, you know, pretty pretty good game. I'm
there were just a lot of fouls. I mean it
was there a game. They had three players foul out
in this one, including Kelly who filed out with like
eight and a half minutes to go. Nick, I mean,
it was this just seemed like whistle palooza at this game. Yeah,
it was a wild one.

Speaker 6 (02:19):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
Northern Illinois proved that they already brand new roster not
necessarily playing cohesive basketball. The chemistry is very much still
in the early days, and it felt as if Wisconsin.
There at no point, I mean honest, at no point
today was I worried at all. And you have you

(02:41):
have that false bravado oftentimes coming into a game, you think, yeah,
we we can't lose this group. We won't lose this
group tonight. You're not. You're not going to if you
play the way that you do it. In Northern Illinois,
it just truly never had a crack at it.

Speaker 7 (02:54):
No.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
I mean, it started with the roady three at the beginning,
and then you know, you gotta steal, you gotta you
gotta nick layup. You go up five to nothing very
early on, and you extended out to a double digit
lead very quickly. Wisconsin got out to a fifteen to
five lead, and after they got up fifteen to five,
it never got back to single digits for Northern Illinois.

(03:16):
So Wisconsin, I mean they were in control from start
to finish. I mean, they jumped out there early, the
energy was great, and they just took control and they
kept Northern Illinois back at about twenty points for most
of this game. So yeah, it's good to have that
because during the last game against Campbell, Campbell was kind
of hanging around for a little bit. I mean, they

(03:37):
were within about five points there until about eight and
a half minutes to go in the second half, and
then Wisconsin went on their run. They're twenty nine to two,
run to run away and have that thirty point victory.
So this one was completely different in the sense that
Wisconsin was just in control. They had a massive lead

(03:58):
the entirety of the game, Nick, as you mentioned, and
that fast start is important, and that's part of having
a couple of those returning players like a John Blackwell,
like a Nolan Winter to help lead the charge. But
Wisconsin's also got a lot of new faces too. You
got Nick Boyd in there, who's new even though he's
been around college basketball for quite a bit, Andrew Roady,

(04:19):
Austin Rapp. You got all these new guys trying to
mesh them together. You have a few returners that you
can bank on in Blackwell and Winter, Janicki as well
off the bench. But it's something across all of college basketball, Nick,
I mean, we see with the transfer portal, with the
way guys move around year in and year out, there's

(04:40):
always going to be that trying to get stuff together.
But when you have absolutely zero continuity, like Northern Illinois.
It makes it that much more difficult, especially when you're
facing a powerhouse offensive squad like Wisconsin.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Yeah, and you just think about the value of having
Nolan Winter and John Blackwell and Jack Janicky to a
degree here at w Scott. Those are the three guys
in the rotation that come with any sort of experience
playing with one another here, and Nick Boyd has now
made a seamless transition. It feels like you're starting to
see Rody and Rap turn some corners pretty quickly.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Year.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
Rap didn't need to have much of an offensive output
tonight for them to get to ninety seven, and it
feels like he's one of those guys that you're typically
going to be able to rely on for double digits,
if not mid double digits, every single game.

Speaker 5 (05:27):
So you look at the bench.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
They had great production from that group tonight for Wisconsin.
Doing quick math here because they don't have the numbers
strikking in front of me. I think they get twenty
nine points off the bench tonight with a bunch of
different guys chipping in really well done. Six different guys
off the bench putting in at least one bucket for
the Badgers. I mean, that's what you need to see

(05:49):
in a game like this, where you can kind of
lean on those guys knowing you've got this one in
the bag and give your starters a little bit of
extra rest because the season gets long quickly. The bad
are certainly expecting to be playing late into March.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
Yeah, twenty nine bench points, including five of them from
our guy Isaac Gard coming in, being able to drill
a three pointer and then next possession he gets filed,
goes to the free throw line, drains him both. I mean,
that just had the energy just going absolutely bonkers there
at the Cole Center. I mean, when you get Isaac

(06:25):
Gard in there for some late game action and whenever
he touches the ball, the entire student section wants him
to launch it up, They want him to shoot, and
he does. He had a wide open look and just
drilled it, and you could see Greg Guard he had
a little bit of a smirk, a little bit of
a smile like, yeah, there we go ahead, a boy.
That was fantastic. That was the cherry on top for

(06:48):
this game. Five bench points for Isaac Gard coming in.
Just when you have a blowout like this early on,
because generally we're not going to see a ton of
Isaac Guard in the rotation throughout the season. But when
you get these kinds of moments, that just makes it
that much more fun.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
Absolutely, and I'm sure maybe we'll revisit that in our
following segment here, our upcoming segment. A lot of fun,
I believe tonight between the Badgers and the Badgers only
I can't imagine there was a lot of fun being
had on the other side to travel into a hostile environment.
I will say this in attendance. It was incredibly loud

(07:25):
in there, and I think this was the closest to
a sellout we've seen so far this year.

Speaker 5 (07:28):
It's a Friday night.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Their last game was during the week, a Monday nighter
against Campbell. The other ones were exhibitions at Pfizer and
here against u w Platteville. We're getting closer to a sellout.
We're getting closer to the biggest crowd they've seen so
far this year. Tonight was the biggest, and it was
very loud, very energetic, very much fired up. Maybe it's
a product of what the football team hasn't done that

(07:51):
people are leading more into the basketball team early in
the season, but it felt good to be there and
kind of hear those cheers. I think that this is
another one of those teams where you're gonna be looking
back in a couple of months and saying, Okay, this
is the path to the one seed in the Big
Ten tournament.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
Yeah, I think some of the way that they've been
playing and putting up points here and just showcasing how
well they've gone, I think that absolutely is realistic possibility.
And yeah, you know, maybe a win against the Huskies
here tonight can lead to a win against the Huskies tomorrow.
We shall see. Not necessarily holding my breath for that,
but hey, you know it's uh.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
Let's play on it.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
We're gonna have to, but it's a step in the
right direction, you know, being able to beat the Huskies here.
And yeah, I mean this when when you see the
crowd kind of get more energetic and you see them
showing up. I mean, it's Friday night. You know, everyone's
done with their classes for the week, and you know,
get yourself a basketball game before you hit up you know,
the rest of downtown. I mean, I think it's a

(08:51):
great way to start off your weekend. Absolutely, and especially
when you're going to see a win. And when when
you see a ninety seven seventy two win over Northern Illinois,
that's a great way to start the weekend. You see
Nick Boyd put up twenty five points, John Blackwell putting
up fifteen, Nolan Winter with twelve. It's all very fun,

(09:12):
and we're gonna get to a lot more fun on
the other side because we got fun facts with Dave
coming up. We also got more fun coming up later
on the show as Nick Ozen from Badgers two four
seven is going to join us as well. That's always
a lot of fun being able to talk with him,
get his thoughts on this win. And we'll here once
again Greg Guard his conversation with Matt Leapey and Brian
Butch after the game. We'll get the thoughts from coach

(09:35):
coming up later on in the program as well. He's
Nick Burswitz. I'm Dave Gasper. This is the Jane K
Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 8 (09:54):
Readout.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Coronado Rap was back for Wisconsin Coronado Donna La and
they stepped on the faceline to the Belong.

Speaker 8 (10:03):
And Northern.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
Welcome back to the jan K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.
Jan and K Security solutions from home theaters to smart
lighting to a universal home control. Go online to jksecurity
dot com. Dave Gasper here with you alongside Nick Brucewitz
talking about this Badger's victory over Northern Illinois ninety seven
to seventy two. If you'd like to join the conversation

(10:30):
with us, it can do so on the hotline six
oh eight three two one thirteen ten. Nick Boyd was
the star of the show here tonight. Twenty five points
in this game, and and he had most of them,
twenty of them into the first half. Just absolutely dominated
gott Wisconsin out to a massive lead early on and

(10:50):
just kept the gas on a just stayed on the
gas pedal. Uh. Just incredible, Nick, I mean just watching
him come in last year we saw a tran for
come in, john Tonjay, and he was just the leader
of this offense, coming in as a guy who had
been around college basketball for a number of years. Nick Boyd,

(11:11):
he seems like this year's version of john Tonjay, don't
you think.

Speaker 4 (11:15):
Yeah, Absolutely, there's a there's a breadth of experience for him,
and maybe to a higher degree if Fau made a
Final Four run while he was there under Dusty may
now head coach of Michigan, and he also played at
San Diego State this most recent season.

Speaker 5 (11:30):
So yeah, Nick.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
Boyd, I thought we might be on track for a
Tanja esque early season performance when he put up forty
plus against Arizona. Boyd didn't really have to go that
hard in the second half because the Badgers already separated
themselves well enough. Certainly a Badger career high, did I
see it was a new career high for him?

Speaker 5 (11:51):
It was. It was indeed a new career high for him.
As you know, that is something that is one of
our fun facts. Actually that we're getting too here. So
without further ado, then I spokes, might as well just
get into it. It's time now for fun facts with Dave.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Hey, have you ever heard me?

Speaker 5 (12:08):
Here's the term fun fact. I got a couple of
fun facts here.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Because I have a fun fact, you have a fun fact.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
I do.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
First time in history this has happened that eight games,
five turnovers, and he's recorded thirty five assists. Spent a
long time since we've seen a game like this.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
The fun out.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yeah, this game's fun.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
Okay, that fact is fun?

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Yeah? Are you fired up?

Speaker 5 (12:32):
I'm fired fired up for Fun Facts with David all Right, Nick,
as you mentioned here on one of the fun facts,
Nick Boyd sets a new career high in points, which
twenty five. His previous career high was twenty four points
when he was with San Diego State when they were

(12:54):
taking on Boise State. So a new record for him.
And yeah, he could have gone for much more, but
Greg Guard emptying the bench, getting some different rotations out there.
Just twenty seven minutes for Boyd in this game. But
he sets himself a new career high. And Boyd, I mean,
when he scores, his teams generally tend to win. He

(13:18):
is now eclipsed the double digit mark in scoring in
fifty five career games and his team has now gone
forty two and thirteen Wow in those games.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
And I anticipate he's gonna be scoring double digits nightly
for the Badgers. So that's a good start.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Damn.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
That's pretty darn good.

Speaker 5 (13:39):
For two and thirteen.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
Yeah, goodness, gracious, that's really strong. We'll see if Boyd
can make that number stand here. That's like eighty percent
win percentage. I mean, I'm roughly doing that in my brain.

Speaker 5 (13:51):
But yeah, that's a good figure. Yeah, it is and
also with multiple three pointers. He had three points. He
had three three here tonight. And when he when he
hits multiple three pointers, he's done that in fifty three games,
they've also they've won now or sorry now, in fifty

(14:11):
four games, his team has won forty two of those games.
So twelve. Yeah, very similar. Multiple three pointers generally helps
you to score in double digits. But yeah, and it is.
It is incredible. Now Boyd has dropped twenty or more
points in seven career games. So it is a great

(14:35):
scoring run for Nick Boyd here. And when he scores,
your team tends to win quite a bit.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
Seems like it. And I would wonder if he doesn't
get seven games this season with the Badgers with twenty plus.

Speaker 5 (14:48):
Yeah, I could absolutely see that being the case, provided
he stays stays healthy, stays out there. That is, that
is absolutely within the realm of possibility. You heard a
familiar name here to night for Northern Illinois, joo Atuca.
And if you were at the game at the Cole Center,
you weren't watching it on TV or listening to it

(15:08):
on the radio, listening to Maunt Lapey and you're listening
to us now in your drive home. Yes, Joo Atuca
is indeed the brother of Wisconsin Badger's running back Gideon Atuca.
Gideon was there at the Cole Center tonight watching his brother.
That had to be a great family affair. Gets to
see his brother score thirteen points, but also gets to
see Wisconsin win handily.

Speaker 4 (15:29):
Yeah, I think the brother part maybe means a little
bit more, but yeah, you're spot on. It's a very
unique situation to see brothers play separate sports like that,
and it seems like Jo's got a whole different build.
Gideon's kind of short, stocky, very well filled out playing
running back, and then his brother's like a guard and

(15:51):
it's just a whole different build. So it's really cool
to see athletic family.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
Yeah, absolutely, and great to see them be able to
catch up and spend some time together this week. And
I had to imagine the parents were in town for this.
You get to see both at the same time. It's
it's fantastic. And you know, Wisconsin now against Northern Illinois,
they are LaVar ball undefeated, never lost at home against

(16:16):
Northern Illinois nine to oher record. Now, the last meeting
against them was all the way back in two thousand
and two, and that time back in two thousand and
two neck the last time Wisconsin and Northern Illinois squared
off when they won that game, that marked Wisconsin's first
two and oh start since nineteen ninety eight. And that game,

(16:38):
that Badger's team was led by Kirk Penny wow with
nineteen points in that game. Kirk Penny one of the
formerly one of the assistants of the head coach Greg
Gard and he just left the team this season and
now Brad Davison has taken over his role in the
coaching staff. But still Kirk it comes full circle there

(17:01):
with the Northern Illinois.

Speaker 4 (17:03):
Even if he's not here, he still finds his way
into the narrative.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
So it's.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
Yeah, Northern Illinois doesn't hold up to the Wisconsin Badgers. Unfortunately,
that's just how things work. There's a pecking order to things,
and the Badgers are more dominant in a better program
than then. But Xavier Amos was a Northern Illinois Husky
and then he became a Badger and now he's at
Loyola Chicago, So I mean there is a connection there.

(17:29):
Had Amos decided to stay with.

Speaker 5 (17:31):
The program, Yeah, absolutely there is, And uh, you know,
I saw Loyola Chicago in their season opening game hits
a buzzer beater in their first game after losing sister Gene.
So that was that was incredible games. So that Amos
didn't play, didn't play.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
He did not play in the game.

Speaker 5 (17:51):
Oh Man, tough, tough look Framon Amos didn't play much
for Wisconsin last year. I thought he was gonna have
a bigger role, but ultimately he did not. So yeah,
but Wisconsin, Yeah, very tough break happens with some of
these transfers. You never know where you end up where
you end up going. But Wisconsin, we do know that

(18:14):
they get to win here tonight, ninety seven seventy two
over Northern Illinois. And what we also know is that
Nick Osin is not entering the transfer portal anytime soon.
But we also know that he's coming up next. He's
going to be on the other side of this break.
We're going to talk to him from Badgers twenty four
to seven and get his thoughts on this Badger's victory.

(18:35):
You're gonna want to stick around for that. He's Nick.
I'm Dave. This is the Jane K Security Solutions Basketball
postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Aurlock baseline right, We'll try to hold his turn pass.
Call it away by Janicky and he's on the break
the way down the lake. Sends it in two hand
flush from Jack Janicky.

Speaker 5 (19:01):
This is a J and K Security Solutions basketball postgame
show from home security to automation. Jay and K Security
Solutions has you covered? Go to jksecurity dot com for
more info. Dave Gasper here alongside Nick Brucewitz, and we
are joined now by Nick Osen. From twenty four to
seven Sports covers the Badgers in all different ways. Badger basketball,

(19:24):
Badger football, Badger recruiting, every single thing. And uh, Nick,
we appreciate you joining us after each and every game here.
And this is an impressive win for Wisconsin in a
lot of different ways. What stood out to you tonight
as the most impressive aspect of this game?

Speaker 6 (19:43):
Yeah, David, if I could give you two my friend
on this one, I think first and foremostly you know,
the obvious, like you said it was, it was an
impressive one. I think just really this was one there
wasn't even really a minute of kind of U sweating
or worrying about the result. Right, It felt like from
the jump from the open tip, the badges were going
to be in control, so I think that is obviously

(20:03):
a real positive there, and I just want to note that, frankly, guys,
I was pretty impressed with some of those young forwards.
Obviously they got some good playing time tonight, Alexis bielawskis
Will Garlock, and they looked very, very comfortable. I think
that there were kind of some nervous moments from Garlock
in game one, and I got to chat with him
this week, so I'm excited about that story. But tonight

(20:26):
both looked like they were probably deep into their sophomore
years by the time you were kind of watching some
of those contributions. I asked Guard about it postgame, and frankly,
I've told you, guys from early on, they're going to
need that youth this year, and so it's a good
thing that they're getting these opportunities to grow a little
bit in games that maybe aren't you know, three point
games of four or five minutes flow.

Speaker 5 (20:47):
Nick.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
When you look at the contributions of Austin Rapp, Nolan Winter,
and Andrew Roady in this game, the combined for a
total of twenty eight points. And I'm not using this
as a negative I'm using as they combined for twenty
eight total points and they still win by twenty five,
does that tell you how deep this team is in
terms of where they can get their offensive production.

Speaker 6 (21:10):
Yeah, Nick, I think it definitely does tell you that.
But if I'm being honest on this game, I think
it also tells you it was Nick Boyd's night.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
You know.

Speaker 6 (21:18):
I think that with the illustrious career that he's had,
I think that maybe many of us would have thought
he'd scored twenty five before in a college game. I
certainly thought that, but a career high night. You watched
those first three or four minutes, you knew it was
going to be his type of night. I actually loved
what I saw, though, Bruce from Winter. I mean, obviously,
twelve points I believe is certainly respectable. I think he's

(21:40):
going to average probably twelve to thirteen to maybe fourteen
on some good nights. But I thought that he had
a couple really, really good hustle plays, and I think
that is following two really good effort days on the
defensive glass and obviously the offensive boards. I remember, I
think Garlock had missed one and he grabbed it. So
I just think that that intensity mentality that we've talked about,

(22:01):
where you're looking to see him kind of get closer
to that ceiling. I think that's something that was on display.
I think the rap looks a lot more comfortable in
the second half and then Rody Man, it gets thrown
around too often, but he just might be that perfect
kind of glue guy or star in his role because
I truly believe he can pass, shoot, you know, obviously rebound,
defend while at his size, it's going to be intriguing

(22:23):
to watch that trio guys.

Speaker 5 (22:25):
Is Nick Boyd the quote unquote next John Tanjay?

Speaker 6 (22:32):
I would say no, Dave, just because I think that
they're so different in terms of players. But if you
mean kind of that perfect one year you know, transfer
fit like fit on the court off the court, but
also obviously is a huge ceiling razor than in that
sense absolutely, you know, I just what we saw from
mister Tanja last year. I just try not to make

(22:53):
those comparisons too often because I mean, he was truly
a top four or five player in the entire country,
right So I'm gonna I will even be kind of
a tempered and tepid with some of those, but in
terms of the role, I think it very much works, Dave.
I mean, I don't get the sense that you know
these Knights are going to I don't think you can
score twenty five every night, but I don't think there
are going to be too many four six points type

(23:15):
of Knight either. I think that he is, at the
absolute worst, the top two player on this team. Probably.
I think that he will be among the leaders in scoring,
and obviously at that point guard spot, you have the
ball in your hands a lot, and you could just
hear kind of his excitement and I would almost say gratitude, guys,
of being here in this program, in this fit. I

(23:36):
mean he's said it to me since April, really when
he was in the portal, but just postgames tonight, could
really feel those words. That's something I'm going to write
about as well. But just again, a great great job
from the staff bringing him in a talent such as
Nick Boyd.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
Talented bench player Jack to Nikki seven steals so far
this season took him much longer. It was January by
the time he recorded seven steals.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
Last year.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
He saw the value of having someone you could rely
on for first and foremost energy, but then value in
terms of production and Kamari McGee last year he's gone.
Do you think Jack Jennicky could fill the role of
maybe being that lightning bolt off the bench.

Speaker 6 (24:19):
Yeah, I absolutely do, Bruce. You know, I don't know
if he has maybe maybe some of the short offensive
explosions spurts that we maybe saw from McGee just because
of how he shot the three ball. But I think
that Janicki's floor is very, very high. I actually talked
with him about that this week in a group presser.
He just he's so ego list, you know, he knows
the game so well, has a great feel for the defense.

(24:41):
And obviously his shot wasn't on tonight necessarily, but we
know we can score the ball. I mean, obviously he
was a scoring superstar in high school. He's tearing it
up a little bit of practice when we've seen that before.
Just a really good kind of star in his role.
Like I mentioned, I think similarly, Nick Carrington is gonna
ring a lot of that too. He'll he'll shoot the

(25:02):
ball at times. I do like what we've seen from
him from three at least a practice. It hasn't translated
as much yet, but again, just energy guys all over
the floor and a lot.

Speaker 5 (25:11):
Of pride in that deeper Nick I got one last
question for you. In the postgame press conference, did anyone
ask Guard about Isaac hitting a three and getting five points?

Speaker 6 (25:23):
Yeah? Absolutely, I think I think my friend, uh, John
Steppy with what the Journal Sentinel did and and Guard
had a lot of really great things to say, So
I'm sure John will be using that with his respect
to story. You know, I'll be typing it out with
some of my notes, but basically, just again gratitude. That's
kind of the word of the night tonight. Guard loves

(25:44):
having obviously his son here, you know, wrapping up his
career this year, and just talked about how he's really
the consummate teammate and obviously you know, the connection with
Guard is is how he's here, but he's also grinding
every day in practice. He's very very well from the guys,
and he's like, hey, I wasn't surprised that he knocked

(26:04):
out that shot because he sees a lot of those that.

Visit jksecurity dot com. The Badgers win ninety seven seventy
two over Northern Illinois, which has to make for a
very happy Greg Guard who met up with Matt Lape

(27:30):
and Brian Butch After the game.

Speaker 2 (27:33):
Wisconsin Defeast and Northern Illinois tonight ninety seven to seventy two,
joint course side by head coach Greg Guard coach. We
were talking about Giohnny Cobb and his nineteen assists and
no turnovers and the season opener and the exhibition game,
and Nick Boyd kind of took a challenge first possession
of the game. Guys got a set a tone here tonight, didn't.

Speaker 3 (27:53):
Yeah, I thought defensively, we really that intensity we had
that most of that first half was pretty heavy it.
You know, I think that's a credit to them for
for our guys for coming out ready to ready to
go and and keeping their their foot on the gas,
so to speak. And I thought, for the most part,
a really complete game. You know, it was got that

(28:15):
lead and kept you know, you always want to continue
to build it. But I thought to the game was
a little choppy at times with the some of the
calls and and the files which I'll look through the
film and and see how many were things that we
have to clean up or things that won't get called
later in the year, and uh, but I thought all
in all, some some good things.

Speaker 7 (28:36):
We talked a lot about that clean up wise, but
it's you know that the chest up the wall up.
Your young BIG's got a couple of files because as
we talked about, darn it, you have the tendency to
reach you're you're young.

Speaker 3 (28:49):
And the old bigs do it the right way.

Speaker 7 (28:50):
Well, yeah, exactly exactly. And that's how where where I'm
going with this though, was like your young bigs, like
Will had two fouls early on, but at the four
minute mark below that he went straight up vertical. How
valuable is the in game learning experience because we'll learned
in half. As far as I can't do that, I'm

(29:11):
going to have four files. I do it this way. Hey,
I get to stay on the floor a little bit. Yeah,
it's amazing with the bench. How the bench sends a message,
you know. And Austine is the same thing.

Speaker 8 (29:20):
You know.

Speaker 3 (29:21):
It's just you get yourself a foul trouble and now
I'm not putting you back in set. And and it's
and his wed one was a reach. One was a
shove in the back on an offensive rebound off a
free throw that we don't need.

Speaker 8 (29:33):
I mean, he needs to be countering and.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
Spinning and not trying to catapult off somebody's back, so,
you know, and credit for the other guy. I thought
bi Alawska's came in and did some really good things.
I think he's getting more and more comfortable, you know.
So it uh, you know, it was winter. I thought
was really solid again, just all the way around. I
liked what I saw. Other than you know, some of that.

(29:56):
We got to clean up some of the files.

Speaker 8 (29:58):
I thought you were going Bob night there for a
minute about something.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
Oh yeah, yeah, it's your radio or whatever, the FCC
or whatever it is.

Speaker 8 (30:05):
You're good.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
This is how as a coach, I know you you
never accept anything in a victory.

Speaker 8 (30:13):
You wouldn't accept the defeats and all of that.

Speaker 2 (30:15):
But when you're up, we busted out every now and
what you But realistically, when you're in control of the
game and they got it under twenty for like a
half a second in the second half, how your guys
it got choppy.

Speaker 8 (30:28):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
But your guys they never let him back in right,
which is not always the easiest thing.

Speaker 3 (30:35):
Yeah, and they always talk about Hey always tonight talked
about the right things. And when I can hear them
talking on the floor and dead ball situations or we
come to media timeouts, you know, they they I've got
a really good mature group, you know, and and they've
whether they've been here for three or four years or
they've just gotten here. The older guys understand how important

(30:56):
every possession is. Maybe the young guys don't. A freshman
doesn't understand and how important right now when you're up
twenty five or twenty eight, every possession matters because there's
gonna be a game when you're up two. And if
we allow bad habits now, bad habits will come back
and bite us later. And if we play with good
habits now and develop good habits, those will reward us

(31:18):
down the road. So it's just a matter of how
always say, play the game the right way, regardless of
the score. The score will take care of itself if
you're playing the game the right way.

Speaker 7 (31:26):
Well, and you saw that with your guys like they
on the offensive ends. Sometimes in a game like that, right,
there's a little bit of oh get mine, yeah, And
there wasn't that. That's why I said, just based on
the way that your team has come together through two games.
And obviously there's more of that, but there wasn't that.
Everyone played for each other. There was the extra pass.
It's got to tell you you got the right kids

(31:46):
in your locker room. They are about the right things
about playing together, and now you keep building on that
side versus Well, we got to find chemistry with each
other and you don't have to worry about that. And
you've learned that. I mean you knew it probably before us.
But I sit in here watch this game and.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
I to you, yeah, right, you got to play and
iron out the kinks. And I like the fact that
I was able to get you know, a garlock of
belowskis Carrington Jones more minutes, you know, not anytime. We
can get those guys that are coming off the bench
more experience for when we need more from them. Yeah,
I think that can help. So we're not we're not

(32:20):
coming off the bench with mothballs on us or dust
on I was.

Speaker 7 (32:24):
Gonna say we had Nick and John both on the
bench a couple times. It looked over the medicine. I
don't think those guys are going to be on the
bench at the same time a whole lot. You'll have
it a little bit, but it's good for the group
that's in there. Just in case there's a foul trouble,
just who knows what might happen that group gets to
work a little.

Speaker 3 (32:39):
Bit, one one more.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you about another
guy who came off the bench, played one minute and
at five points and rebound, you know at the tip
off thing last week was ask him about that because
it's real in practice. Isaac is going to get in
stretches where he's banging threes, and how he worked on
his game, like a quicker release and more more strength.

Speaker 3 (33:00):
He's grown. I wanted a red shirt him when he
was going into kindergarten and his mom wouldn't let me,
and I knew he could have had he could have
had another year. But anyway, his his agent probably is
going to be meeting with Mark Vander tomorrow morning, right Mark,
you want another Uh No, just you're happy for him

(33:20):
because he's put time in. He's he's just one of
the guys, and and the guys know. I don't treat
him any different. I probably rib him a little more
than than most and a little I'll mark at him
on the scout team when he turns it over the
other scout team guys, I said, good you're playing for
my team. But no, I'm just happy for him because
he has worked on it. He's been a great teammate.

(33:41):
That's a hard position to be in and on a
on a high profile team as the coach's son, and
he's handled it terrifically. I mean, he's a great student.
He's going to get his masters here at the end
of this year. He's already got his undergrad and you know,
he's he's setting himself up to do good things in
life because he's a really good person and he works hard,
and he and he has a humility he understands you know.

(34:02):
But you were probably carrying him around when he was
an infant, when you were here. He's yeah, I mean,
he's known nothing but Badger basketball and h he understands it.
It's a big piece of the culture, you know, because
he's lived it for twenty twenty two years. He's been
in the gym a lot with me and on road
trips and recruiting with me, and so he understands it.

(34:23):
He and it's a simple one voice, but it's a
guy that understands what this program is about and how
special it is to so many people. And he helps
you know, they're all important and regardless of how many
minutes they get, they get twenty five minutes and twenty
five points like Nick Boyd, or if they get fifty
five seconds like Isaac Gard, they're all important parts and

(34:44):
people in our program.

Speaker 8 (34:45):
Yeah. Fun to watch, fun to watch your team here.
And we're early and very early.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
In the season, but pretty good start getting in the
nineties consecutive game.

Speaker 3 (34:54):
Yeah, just keep trying. I'm sure I'll find something on film,
Matt to talk.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
It's telling work. I'll look hard y appreciate it time.
That's all Badger's head coach Greg Guard winning its ninety
seven seventy two Wisconsin a winner.

Speaker 5 (35:11):
Badres head coach Greg Guard after this one, and uh,
it's a great win. It's an impressive win for Wisconsin. Nick.
Any final thoughts before we say good night, No, just
onto the next one.

Speaker 4 (35:23):
Business as usual. Badger's taking care of business in these
bye games. Convincing teams to come and lose at home
is always a good feeling to get those wins.

Speaker 7 (35:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (35:31):
The b U Y games and the Badgers have another
one coming up next week Tuesday. They will welcome Ball
State to the Cole Center. That game will tip off
at seven point thirty as well, and we will be
there with you after that game as well here on
the jan Casecurty Solutions Basketball post Game Show. So that's

(35:52):
all coming up. For our producer, Casey James, for Nick Bruswitz,
for our friend Nick Osen who joined us, I'm Dave Gasper,
thank you for listening, and once again the final score tonight,
Wisconsin ninety seven Northern Illinois seventy two. This has been
the Jane K Security Solutions Basketball postgame Show.

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Hob left the center circle down to five seconds. Hob
throwing to Laski for three. It is good with two
seconds for remaining and the Badgeries will dribble out the
clock and prove to two to zero with a ninety
seven to sixty or take that ninety seven to seventy
two win against Northern Illinois

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
