Each time or Clipson Sports Talk with Lawton Swanny.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Finally, Clemson Sports Talk has come back. Two drive time.
Hell everybody long Swan back in the saddle once again.
It is d show that shakes the south Land. Clemson
Sports doll for you each and every afternoon as you
make your way on the great state of South Carolina
and beyond, listening to us on incredible radio stations like

(01:04):
Fox Sports Radio fourteen hundred the Midlands, around the world
on the iHeartRadio app, you get in the show The
shakesa sal lamb brought you in part by our friends
over at Mets Plumbing. Seven three to two drip, Drip, drip.
You know the jingle, seventh three to two drip. That's
Mets Plumbing. All right, we are down to twelve at
the end of the night, we'll be down to an

(01:25):
elite eight. Last night, in the early goings, the sec
taken carab Business the Alabama Crimson Tide, setting a new
mark in the NCAA tournament with shooting threes in a
ballgame fifty one making threes in a ballgame twenty five

(01:46):
seventy five of Alabama's one hundred and thirteen points in
their matchup with BYU came from beyond the art and
Marcus Sears was sizzling first half second half he had
struggled in the tournament, shooting oh no not Mark Sears
eleven of eighteen, ten of sixteen from beyond the arc

(02:09):
thirty four points in the game, leading the Crimson Tide
to a convincing victory as they advance. Then, in the
second contest of the evening, the Florida Gators, the champions
of the SEC, in a tough battle, a two point
game at the half against Maryland, but the Gators pull

(02:31):
away in the second half, as they've done so often
this season, winning eighty seven to seventy one going away,
the Florida Gators taking care of the Maryland Terrapins and
ending their season. But again forty thirty eight at the break,
Florida outscores Maryland forty seven to thirty three in the

(02:52):
second half. And if you want to talk about like
the issues that you deal with with Florida, and really
I would say, in fairness to Maryland, the issues that
you deal with when you get into the NCAA tournament.
We talk about, you know, the way Clempson performed and
the lack of scoring on the interior from Victor Lockin
and and Ian Shefflin, who were both really solid players

(03:17):
for Clemson throughout the year. Statistically, listen to these numbers
for Florida. They get from their starters six', ten, fifteen
thirteen and, fourteen completely balanced and off their Bench Thomas
hugh with, Thirteen Denzel aberdeen with, twelve six scores in

(03:44):
double figures for The Florida gators in that. Ballgame and
then on the flip, Side maryland had four guys in double.
Figures Julian rees scored, Twelve Derek queen scored twenty, Seven
Kobe gillespie scored, seventeen And Rodney rice scored. TWELVE i,
mean your your main guy's got to show, up and

(04:07):
in that, ballgame it was the main guys showing up
for both of those. Teams but, Man florida just, deep
six deep in double figure, scoring and you do, that
you're gonna be a handful Of florida shot fifty percent
from the floor thirty to sixty eleven for twenty eight

(04:27):
from beyond the. Arc AND i couldn't help but think
after kind of watching That ALABAMA byu game and looking
at their numbers as. Well, again if you're just joining us.
Here early in the, Program alabama shot fifty one three
saying NEW ncaa tournament, record and made twenty five of
them forty nine percent from beyond the. Arc for The Crimson,

(04:49):
tide they shot fifty three percent from the FIELD byu
just twenty percent from beyond the arc six of. Thirty
six of. Thirty alabama had two Players Aiden, holloway who
went six of thirteen And Mark, sears who went ten of,

(05:10):
sixteen hit as many threes or more THAN byu and
not to mention That Chris youngblob was five of eleven.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
For.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Alabama alabama nearly had three guys hit six threes in
the ballgame at a. Minimum, Again, sears with ten thirty
of his thirty four points coming from beyond the. Arc
he had two free throws in the. Game he was
eleven of eighteen from the, field but ten of sixteen

(05:44):
from deep and The Alabama Crimson tide advance impressive, fashion and,
honestly if you're A Clemson tiger, fan it sort of
harkens back to that matchup Against alabama a year ago
in the NC Doublea, tournament watching him hit all of

(06:07):
those threes in The Crimson tides, victory BECAUSE i believe Against,
clemson The Crimson tide hit sixteen to three. Pointers let
me double check When clemson was eliminated and didn't make
it into the final. Four so what a run it
has been for the for The Alabama Crimson. Todd and,

(06:27):
again we'll get to the rest of the other two
ballgames that took place last night. Here, MOMENTARILY i just
want to check that stat on The Alabama clemson game
from the NC Doublea tournament a year. Ago sears led
them in scoring in that matchup with twenty. Three he
had seven three pointers and The Crimson, todd YES i Was,

(06:49):
craig they had. Sixteen they were sixteen to thirty six
in that ball games in that ball. Game so it's
a style that maybe some people don't, like lots of
three pointers from The Crimson. Tide you live by the,
three you die by the. Three and The Crimson, tide,
though will roll on further in THE Ncaa. Tournament they

(07:11):
will face off with The Duke Blue, devils who also
took care of business last. Night The Blue devils one
hundred and ninety three Over arizona pretty commanding performance By.
DUKE i Know arizona made a bit of a run
in the latter stages of that, ballgame but Ultimately duke

(07:34):
never really was in any trouble as they took care of.
Business Cooper flag played as you would expect that he
would in a big, moment thirty points for the freshman
fellow on. Nineteen this you'd be on nine of nineteen
shooting and nine of ten from the three point. Line

(07:56):
Caleb love For, arizona the Former North carolina guard going
up against The Blue. Devils he faced, HIM i, believe
and he was At North. CAROLINA i think they said
that during the. Game when he was At North, carolina
they played Against duke in THE ncaa. Tournament But Caleb
love last night For arizona eleven of twenty one from the,

(08:16):
field five of eleven from beyond the r eight to
nine from the free throw, line thirty five points to
lead all scores in that. Ballgame two thirty five point
scores in that, matchup And duke led at one, POINT i,
believe by almost. TWENTY i think it was seventy to
fifty one about the midway point in the second, half

(08:41):
But arizona could not trim it all the way. Back
they did get it to at one POINT i think
it was ninety maybe ninety, three ninety, eight maybe a
five point game was as close as they got, late
but not enough of the tank for The. Wildcats and
then on the flip, side the overtime matchup to come

(09:06):
from behind victory By Texas. TECH i believe they said
during that game That Texas tech had the second, largest
second Largest sweet sixteen come from behind victory in the

(09:28):
history of THE ncaa. Tournament you talk about have yourself a,
day being able to have that type of turnaround and
that type of performance against An arkansas team that looked extremely,
confident quite frankly during the first half of that, ballgame

(09:52):
and really looked extremely confident for the majority of that.
Ballgame but to be able to turn things on the
dome and fight your way back In Texas, TECH i
believe trailed by sixteen points sixty one forty five with

(10:15):
ten minutes and twenty three seconds remaining After Billy richmond
for The razorbacks made a layup to give them a
sixteen point, advantage and The razorbacks had held a fairly
comfortable margin throughout the. Game as a matter of, fact
they jumped out to a quick eighteen to seven, lead

(10:35):
and give credit To Texas, tech never gave. Up they,
battled they, battled they, battled and at the nine second,
mark with nine seconds left in the, Ballgame Texas tech
finally tied the score at seventy. Two so a relentless
run from sixty one to forty five to seventy, two

(10:58):
seventy two to close out regulation and go to, overtime
and then a back and forth battle in ot and
it was one of those moments where again kind of
like with The baylor, Game i'm sitting there watching it
all play, out AND i hear him talking ABOUT. Jt,
TOPPING Jt topping and The All american AND i, go

(11:21):
hold up pumps had played AGAINST. Jt, topping But clemson
didn't play Against Texas. Tech And i'm, LOOKING i, GO
i believe he played With New mexico last year When
clemson faced off with The, Lobos and sure, enough there it.
Was he was a transfer six twenty five pounds sophomore

(11:46):
transferred To Texas tech after spending a year.

Speaker 4 (11:50):
With New.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Mexico and he's Got Texas tech, now in The elite
eight as we whittle things down to get tonight seven h,
Nine Michigan state And Old miss facing off on THE
cbs in The south, region and then at nine thirty
Nine auburn And michigan facing off in The. South then

(12:13):
in The midwest region at seven thirty nine tonight ON
tbs And TRUE tv Again kentucky And tennessee facing off
as those TWO sec foes will. Battle and then at
ten o nine or, later for, sure ALMOST i can
almost guarantee it's going to be Later Top seed To
houston And Forced heed To purdue in The midwest region

(12:36):
facing off ON tbs And TRUE. Tv whether it was
a good night of college, basketball no doubt about that
for the fans and attendance man to see that comeback
and to See Texas tech the heart that they played
with The Duke Blue. Devils WHO i think if you're

(12:59):
In Atlantic Coast conference is fan and AND i don't
want to say. FAN i really do believe. This this
might be a hot take hot take alert coming up
hot take alert here on the. PROGRAM i do feel
like there are MORE sec fans like fans that pull
for The Southeastern conference than there are fans that pull

(13:21):
for The Atlantic Coast. Conference BUT i think in this,
season given the the the sounding boards out there about
how great THE sec is and how all the attention
has been on that, CONFERENCE.

Speaker 4 (13:39):
I think that your time is, done AND i think
that the spotlight should go on top of.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Me, yeah and the spotlight has been on THE. Sec
it's my hope for from a selfish, perspective it's my
hope That duke will AND i also picked, them but
it's my hope That duke will win THE nash title
and in doing, so maybe knock off a couple Of

(14:05):
Southeastern conference schools along the way to flex The Atlantic
Coast conference's muscles a little bit in a year where
it's it seems like every at every, turn All i've
heard is how great THE sec, is how great The
Southeastern conference. Is and Like i've said over and, over
maybe maybe they. Are maybe they are the best conference in.

(14:28):
History but, again those teams that finished under five hundred
and not a little bit, under but substantially under five
hundred in the conference outside Of arkansas were all eliminated
from THE Ncaa tournament without getting a. Victory And arkansas
is now, out and and kudos to them for making
a run to The sweet. Sixteen that's not easy to.
Do But i'm also not gonna go walking around tooting their.

(14:54):
Horns that's just not it's just not my. Angle zero
three four, five zero zero eighty six text, line phone.
Line and, again you could be a part of the program,
anytime any, placed. Anywhere by the, way yesterday we talked
About Kevin, willard as it was speculated that he was

(15:16):
not only the top target For villanova's opening at head,
coach but that he would be going. There With maryland
losing last night To, florida it would seem to open
the door that he's likely, Gone but when he met
with the media after their, loss he, SAID i don't

(15:37):
know What i'm. Doing i'll be honest with. YOU i
haven't talked to my, AGENT i haven't talked to my.
Wife and the thing about it THAT i think made
everybody sort of perk there is up on this was
the fact that As maryland's leaving their, hotel he's getting
booed by the, fans which is shocking to say the,

(16:00):
least but not surprising given the era we live. In
and one of the THINGS i will, say no doubt
about it unequivocally is that you, know coaches now are
getting a little taste of their own. Medicine like we
can be very critical here on this program of the
transfer portal and of the way the system currently, works

(16:25):
but for so many, years the only people in the
business who could do this kind of backdoor dirty deed
or whatever you want to call, it where you just
up and leave were the. COACHES i, mean that's that.
Players you, know one of the things that's been forgotten
and we don't even talk about it on this program,

(16:47):
anymore is that players had to sit. Out like sitting
out a year was a. Thing, oh you want to
transfer From clemson To, michigan do, it but you're not
gonna play in the twenty twenty five basketball. Season you
could play in twenty twenty, six and student athletes willingly

(17:13):
did it. Now the other thing that often happened was
if a guy had red shirted because he did not
want to lose another. YEAR a lot of times those
guys didn't do a lot of. Transferring and so the

(17:33):
one thing that that aspect of the rules gave us
was more. STABILITY i, MEAN i talked about rosters et,
cetera et cetera, Yesterday and the truth of the matter
is THAT i didn't want to say anything about players
who transfer having to sit. Out AND i think when

(17:57):
we've got this situation where players are being, compensated that
is not the worst thing to put into the, rules
especially if you had some sort of nil deal with
another program that, hey you could, transfer you can get
paid by SCHOOL, x but you can't play for SCHOOL x,

(18:20):
yet and that would slow the. Portal that would also
slow the amount that players could make or would, make
BECAUSE i think the, market much like, everything is going
to demand that the prices continue to go. UP i

(18:46):
don't think college contracts are going to get less over the,
years if you're following. Me BUT i think if you
could lock guys in and if they had to, sit
that you could keep contracts a little bit. LOWER i
don't think it would get so crazy out of, balance
because a kid might not be willing to go somewhere

(19:06):
for more money if they had to. Sit even if
the year didn't count against, them they might still be
willing to say, no you know, What i'd rather just
stay here and, Play stay here and play making a
million versus go to where you are and sit and
make Three, yeah but you can make three million.

Speaker 4 (19:23):
Here.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah BUT i got a city, here. Coach SO i
think that that's going to be something that's got to be.
Considered AND i don't know how well that'll go over
when it's brought, Up BUT i don't think adding some
inconvenience to the ability to move rosters and programs would

(19:46):
be a bad thing for any college support at this.
POINT i think it would balance things out and make
things a lot easier on everyone. Involved all, right when
we come, back we'll hear something From Dabo sweeney's time
with the media earlier this. Week stay with Us clempson's
sports talt Long swad on A friday, afternoon again Recapping march.
Badness as we dwindled down four. Games last, night we

(20:09):
are at. TWELVE i don't think there's an official name for,
it but after tonight we'll be at The elite. Eight
but over At clemson's football, Complex Dablos sweeney and The
tigers had a scrimmage earlier this, week And sweeney was
asked about freshman wide Receiver Tristan, smith And sweeney gave
a pretty detailed backdrop on not only the, transfer but

(20:32):
also what he's seen from the whiteouts in that.

Speaker 3 (20:34):
Room, absolutely he busted an assignment, today not his.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
Fault that wasn't his, fault but he splashed all spring
and he's a guy just needs needs to get Through,
spring get exposed to, everything and then you, know After,
spring really go back through everything at a little bit
of a different pace for. Him now that now that
he is not going to be the first time he's heard,
it and he goes back through matches it up with the,

(21:01):
TAPE i think he'll make a big stride and then
he needs a big, summer you, know skills and drills
and just timing and just his confidence has. Grown but you,
know you put in a whole offense and you got
a bunch of veteran guys out, there and he's the
guy rolling in that's new and.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
Now but he just catches your eye because he's long
and you, know he runs.

Speaker 4 (21:22):
Well but WHAT i like about him, is you, know
some guys are, big but they don't use their body
or play, big and he can't do. That i've been
really pleased with some of the plays that he's, made
and then he's had some others THAT i think sometimes
he just just it's fast.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
And he's just thinking and AM i doing the right?

Speaker 4 (21:39):
Thing and SO i think he'll get through that this,
summer AND i really anticipate him making a big jump
by the time we get through fall.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
CAMP i really. Do BUT i really love that.

Speaker 4 (21:49):
Kid he's very, mature he's very serious about. It he's
like the happiest guy on the. Team he's just really really.
Happy he's had a tough. Journey he's just really happy
to be at a place Like clinson and and it's been.
Awesome uh you, know, SO i mean we got we
got we got six dudes at that.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Position That's. Clemson. Hey Coach Dabo sweeney talking About Tristan
smith and again further conversation about that wide receiver room
began with his thoughts on the return and the uh
recovery For Tyler. Brown you, know the.

Speaker 4 (22:26):
Guy That I'm i'm probably most proud of Is Tyler.
Brown it's been great to see him have the type
of spring that he's. HAD i, mean he he had
a day the other.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
Day what is? Today what is? Today?

Speaker 4 (22:36):
Wednesday So, monday he had a Day. Monday oh, MAN
i mean it was it was it was pretty. Special
AND i Mean i'm talking about, bigtime big time plays
and and really competitive, work and his confidence is really
just you, know getting back where it. Was but uh
but he's just he's just got a lot a lot
of experience now and just much more maturity to go with.

(22:58):
It Uh, so you know him And antonio And tristan
and And westco AND tj And. COLE i, mean that's
that's six guys right there that that you, know can
can play the game at a high. Level and uh
So i'm really really excited about you know where they
are six guys that will, play you, know at the next.

(23:19):
Level one day they'll all all all those guys will
have that. Opportunity they're all at different. Stages but it's really.
GOOD i, mean it's a good. Group we stay. Healthy you,
know they got a chance to be really. Good and
then you know that That teak is a, guy that's
another guy that big time arrow up by his name
because he's he's worked both sides and you, know we

(23:40):
think he can help us on both.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
Sides SO i feel good about.

Speaker 4 (23:43):
That Mark wez has been out so really you, KNOW i,
mean and Then juju don't get here in the summer
and then you Know parker And clark And clay and.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
Those, guys those, Guys Chase.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
BIRD i, mean we got a pretty good little group of,
guys you, know but but we got six shown enough,
dudes and it's it's, exciting you, know for kid and
those quarterbacks and cause they're getting better and they've all,
flashed they've all Done. ANTONIO i, mean he's he's a
pro and he's trying to become a better. Pro and you,

(24:16):
KNOW tj And westco now have Experience westco. Physically if
y'all don't know if you've seen, him but he just
he doesn't even look the same from what he did
this time last. Year and that's really showed up on
the practice, field you. Know just he made a Play
monday as well On. Avion it was it was a
it was a unbelievable play and he probably doesn't make
it this time last.

Speaker 3 (24:36):
Year but now he's just.

Speaker 4 (24:37):
Stronger so he's got a little bit more uh ability
to hold the line and and a little bit more,
collision you, know endurance to to you, know finish with
the type of body control on a high point ball
with a guy into.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
You so.

Speaker 4 (24:54):
Those guys have all done some good, things but Really
Tyler brown was the guy who really needed to get back,
rolling and Then tristan was a guy didn't. KNOW i
just you, know you got to see. It and SO
i think it's a really good spot at that position
if we stay. Healthy same thing at running. BACK i,
KNOW i know that's a big question, mark you, know

(25:15):
from probably y'all's perspective because you don't.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Know much about our. Guys BUT i really love our running.
BACKS i, mean you, know we got.

Speaker 4 (25:22):
Hate jarvis is out because he was really having a
good spring and now he's got a midfoot, spring so he's.
Out But Adam Man Adam randall has been it is it,
is it has gone better than we.

Speaker 3 (25:34):
Hoped Uh So i'm really really excited for our team
and for. Him he's he's he's really.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
Different it's it creates some, challenges you, know because of
his skill set and then what his past. IS i
Thought easy had his best day today and a really
really good day. Again has been very steady and, consistent you,
know all spring. Long so Obviously jay is a guy
that would have ran out there probably first if we'd

(26:04):
have been out.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
Here but so he's a guy.

Speaker 4 (26:07):
We got a lot of confidence in, him but we'll
see him again Until august when we get back. Out
but we's all, said, no we a lot of work to,
do BUT i think it's gonna be a really good,
group and you, know just just kind of keep keep
putting the work. In you, know that's where the confidence.
Comes just put the work. In gotta be about to.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Work so there you have in the segment pretty much
eating up By Dabos sweeney talking About Tristan, smith talking
about the return Of Tyler, brown his thoughts on that
clenchon wide receiver. Room you add those guys into the
mix alongside a quarterback playing the way K club played
a year. Ago if you get that from him this,
season with those dudes at wide, receiver, man look, out

(26:44):
the sky's the limit for this clip stagger. Team, offensively
you would, think, again there's still gonna have to be
some pieces put in place at running. Back and it's notwithstanding,
injuries which is one of the Things Dabo sweeney also talked.
About we'll jump into some of that in just a
minute when we get bat Because sweeney was asked About
Tristan Lee clemson tackle his, injury ask about running Back

(27:06):
Jarvis green and his. Injury also got into some conversations
about the young offensive lineman taking a look at not
having the spring game on. Television so we got a
whole lot Of Dabos sweeney for you here on A
sweet sixteen down to an elite Eight friday edition of
the show that Shakesa Southland Clepses sports talt right here

(27:27):
On Fox Sports radio fourteen under The midlands and the
course at around The world on The iHeartRadio Application stay With,
Us lawton swan with you on A. Friday so we
heard From Dabo sweeney just a few minutes. Ago he
was talking about the wide. Receivers he Mentioned Tyler brown
returning and how excited he is about. That but he
was also asking about a couple of, Injuries Tristan lee
and Then Jarvis. Green Here's Coach sweeney's responses to that.

(27:50):
Question earlier this. Week he had.

Speaker 4 (27:51):
A little procedure just to help him kind of get
over that ankle a little, bit so he'll be.

Speaker 3 (27:58):
Fine Was jarvis's in, Practice, yeah last, WHATEVER i guess
it Was.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
Monday, Yeah so just midfoot sprain and just but you,
know those are painful and sore and probably put him
out for about four.

Speaker 3 (28:11):
Or five weeks or.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
So Dad boswoot was also asked about some of the
younger offensive linemen who have maybe showed up so.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Far we got guys getting. Reps you don't even know
their names out.

Speaker 4 (28:20):
There Matt luke is. UNBELIEVABLE i don't even. Know i'm,
like holy, MOLY i. Can't i'm like like not.

Speaker 3 (28:26):
Looking. Uh but, again we're just down.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
So many guys and so but we and we got
a practice because we again these, guys this, third the
second tight, end he's to get that work.

Speaker 3 (28:36):
Right we Got seth cornzas that left. Guard you know
who he, Is, no you. Don't. Uh, yeah it's been
a little bit of a mixed.

Speaker 4 (28:42):
Bag but the young guys that that we're really forcing
the issue with Obviously Braden jacobs And Easton ware those
are two guys that that they've got bright.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
Futures And Mason wade as. Well and you know.

Speaker 4 (28:53):
O'Connell, uh he's a he's a guy that's been getting
a ton of. WORK i, mean we feel really good
about let the gumb And Harris blake has had a great.
Spring you, know he's getting, work but but we limit
his he's on a pitch, counts he's played a ton of.
Snaps 're just forcing issue with all those all those other.

(29:14):
Guys you, Know Gavin blanchard he's GETTING i, mean he's the.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
Guy he's getting second team reps.

Speaker 4 (29:22):
Galore Uh so all those guys as good FOR i
think today the starting left tackle Was braiden and the
starting left guard was. O'Connell with the, ones IT'S i
don't it's kind of you, know running at different guys
out there each.

Speaker 3 (29:35):
Day but, man what a great, opportunity you.

Speaker 4 (29:38):
KNOW i, mean and and oh there there's T. J,
Parker go get Him, braiden you, know and you know
he got exposed, early but then he settled, in AND
i think that's just, great you, know for those guys
to to get the speed of the game at this.
Level so that's the good, thing you. KNOW i, mean
obviously you Wish tristan and walk and, uh you Know Elijah.

(30:02):
THURMAN i, mean we've got a lot of guys that
that aren't out, There, saddler who might.

Speaker 3 (30:06):
Be as good alignment as we. Have those guys. Are
they'll all be out there In, august but they've had
all these postseason.

Speaker 4 (30:12):
Stuff SO i think in the long, run we'll be
much further, along just simply because these guys have had
to come along quicker because they've gotten way more reps
than they would normally get this time of the.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Year dabos was also asking about the plays of Safeties
Kylin griffin And Ricardo.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
Jones colin has had a great.

Speaker 4 (30:30):
Spring, uh and unfortunately he got he got hurt the
other day OR i don't, know he just had a.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
Strain in his.

Speaker 4 (30:39):
Legs so he's he's gonna be out for the rest of.
Spring really hate it because he's had a, really really good.
Spring ricardo had a big interception. Today ricardo is a
guy that flashes every time he's out on the. FIELD i,
mean he's he brings great, energy he's, tough like how
he plays the. Game he just he can just lose.

(31:01):
Control he can be a totally out of control player at.
Times and that's where he's got to, grow and that's
our job to develop.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
That BUT i Thought ronan had one of the best
players of the game.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
Today a two minute, drill best breakaway on EASY i
mean it's it's a touchdown and it's a touchdown to win,
situation and And ronan win got him, down you, know
and it was a physical, tackle and you know those
are hard tackles to make in the open field by.
Yourself he scores the games over and then we ended
up getting a. PICK i Think riccardo got to pick
on that. Drive so you, know those guys are all getting.

(31:36):
BETTER i, MEAN i feel. GOOD i Think colin and
and and those guys and then you, know, uh you, Know.

Speaker 3 (31:42):
Billings And Noah, Dixon noah had a sack.

Speaker 4 (31:44):
Today you, know they're all they're all Making Colin, Web they're,
all they're all making.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
Strides so you Heard swiney there saying That griffin was
going to be out for a while with a bit
of an. Injury he was also asked about the spring
game not being broadcasting on, television and that's one of
those things is a big topic of tent for the fan.
Base here's what daboswhen you had to say about.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
It, yeah it's you, know probably where it'll end.

Speaker 4 (32:05):
Up but we're gonna we're gonna produce, it AND i
mean WE'RE i think we're doing our own in house
type of a. Deal it'll be a be a good
day where you, know again we've got we're gonna definitely have.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
A game type of.

Speaker 4 (32:16):
Deal but we we just we're just down so many
people it's hard to fully split the.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
Team so we'll probably have, everybody you, know probably.

Speaker 4 (32:23):
Have a true, offense the first, offense second, offense but
but go against each, other but probably keep on the same.
Side defense on one offense on the, others just because
so we can sub like we need to without having
them on different sides of the.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
Field Uh, so it's gonna be a fun. Day it'll be.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
Good we'll probably you, know might even might even open
up with a little maybe a period or two of
like seven on Seven skelly little old o pass rush
and then jump into the scrimmage from. There Uh, so
it'll be a great, day a lot of, fun a
bunch of recruits.

Speaker 3 (32:49):
Coming it's it's a great opportunity to come out and
see our.

Speaker 4 (32:52):
Team you, know everybody's, going everybody's gonna, play everybody's gonna
have opportunity to see the.

Speaker 3 (32:57):
Guys and you, know.

Speaker 4 (32:58):
We got a few guys that it will take a
ton of. Ress but we may not tackle. Him we
may not Tackle. Antonio he'll be out, there he's gonna.
Go we'll tag off on, him but it's gonna be
a good competitive, day be.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
A lot of. Fun That's.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Davos when you from earlier in the week After clemps's
second scrimmage of the of the, spring he was also
asking about the crowd, size giving the fact that the
game went ON, tv what he thought the turnout would.

Speaker 3 (33:19):
Be, really, honestly that's kind of What i'm. Hoping you.

Speaker 4 (33:21):
Know it's kind of always been, easy and we've always
had great crowds at the spring.

Speaker 3 (33:25):
Game but that was because we could have had it ON.
Tv it was our decision for it not to be ON.

Speaker 4 (33:29):
Tv it wasn't like somebody didn't want to do, it
just we made the decision to do our own in ourse.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
Thing and but one of the things IS i hope.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
That that that'll even spark more people to. Come it's
just a free opportunity to come see The, tigers and
we need. It and, again As i've said many, times
this is the only opportunity that we have to create
a game field like where there's some you, know goose
bumps and a little lump in your throat and you're
out there and it feels like a, game you, know

(33:59):
It's tiger walk coming down the hill.

Speaker 3 (34:01):
And trying to create.

Speaker 4 (34:03):
That and we have so many guys on this team
that have really not played a, lot and so this
is the only chance we. GET i, MEAN i wish
we you, know if we had two preseason, games y'all
think we. Could y'all think we could get fifty plus
thousand people to show up and see The tigers play
a preseason game In. AUGUST i guarantee you we, could
and that'd be. Great but we don't get. That so

(34:24):
this is the only opportunity that we get to create.
That and we got all these mid years and these,
kids they need to feel that because the next time
we have that Is i've been PLAYING. Lsu so it's
a great opportunity to develop a team a little bit
in in a good.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Environment so there you. Go some more Of Dabos. Sweeney
obviously we played a little bit of that for. Yesterday
we'll play one more segment Of Dabo sweeney in the
back end of the. Program our number two for all
for those of you that are making your way home
here on A friday Afternoon asier three four Five o's
zero zero eighty six as the text line in the phone.
Line and again we appreciate each and every one of
you being a part of the. Program we hit a,

(35:05):
break we'll come back and talk about tonight's matchups and
my predictions on them in THE ncaa. Tournament stay with,
us final segment of our number one The show That, Shakespeare,
Southland Clemson, sports Tall on And swan hang out with
you so over on the, website but the dot com
on it Dog conet That's Clemson. Sports tal dot com
article up About Dabo sweeney talking about K Club nick

(35:28):
and pushing kde during spring as The tigers get ready
for Their april fifth spring game up In Death, Valley
and one of the things that got me thinking about is.
Expectations the expectations that people have for K clubnick and

(35:59):
this season are as high AS i can. Remember and
if you go back to a year, ago going into the,
year there was a lot of question marks About Kate.
Clubnic as a matter of, fact you might remember coming
out of the spring, game there were conversations, about, well

(36:23):
Should Trent pearman be the starting? Quarterback? Now how silly
do those conversations now? Seem twelve months, later After kate
Club nick passes for thirty six hundred and thirty nine
yards thirty six touchdowns while also rushing for seven touchdowns

(36:48):
and rushing for four hundred and sixty three yards offset
all of that by just six, interceptions a run to
The College Football, playoff the twelve team, playoff like the
the feeling about K clubnick right now is absolutely greater

(37:10):
than it was two years. Ago two years ago when
there were high expectations for him coming in off of
helping Lead clumson too an A sec championship Against North
carolina and then obviously in the bowl game Against. Tennessee
he looked like a young, freshman but there was still
a lot of, hope a lot of belief That Kay

(37:31):
clubnick could, be you, know the NEXT, bmoc the big
man on, campus and nothing wrong with. That but then
you go To duke and you lose twenty eight to
seven and K clubnick looks inexperienced and lost in bad game,
management sliding before the fourth down marker like it was
just a, lot and those, issues those issues just continued

(37:56):
to exacerbate themselves throughout the, season so much so THAT
i Think cad really got into his. Head and a year,
ago a year, ago When clemson would have a hiccup
or an. Issue it did feel LIKE K clubnick in

(38:16):
some respects might be on the brink of one of
those epic, meltdowns but he sort of fought through all of,
that and at one point along the, WAY i think
everybody started to get a lot more comfortable, that, oh
you know, WHAT k club is going to figure out
how to make the play and so heading into this,

(38:38):
SEASON i think everyone can agree that the mindset or
the feelings AROUND K clubnick is that he's going to
have a great. Year but that was sort of the
mindset two years ago and he. Didn't do you have

(39:03):
concern that because the expectations are much, higher that he
can't live up to those. Expectations do you think K
clebman will pass for more than thirty six one hundred
and thirty nine. Yards do you think he'll pass for
more than thirty six touchdowns this? Year, now you can't

(39:29):
read anything into the spring and what it looks like
the spring game and all, that but his number is
going to be tough to. Duplicate And dabosweeny had talked
After clem's first, scrimmage said he wasn't great and a
lot of people are like oh, boy what does that?

(39:50):
Mean but this when he said earlier this week he was,
good he bounced. Back he wasn't terrible in the first,
scrimmage but the second dabos when he's critical of, me everybody's,
like oh my, god what's, happening what's, happening what's wrong
with K klubnick And sweeny made a good, point AND
i think this is a point that many times some

(40:13):
of us recognize with our, children especially when they do
a good job a lot of the. Time most of
the time dust when you say, quote anytime you get
an opportunity to yell at some of these, guys it's.
Great and if your player is playing spectacularly and you

(40:43):
can't ever say a whole lot to him because it's
tough to find errors and correctible mistakes and things like,
that then you know it doesn't take away from the
player that can be but people have to have constructive

(41:05):
feedback some every player on the team needs to have
his butt schewed out every once in a, while because
in a, game when the pressure's, on you want them
to have that sense of urgency and that ability to
navigate it without making a key. Mistake and so For.
Sweeney the article that's up right, now you can go read.

(41:26):
It you, know there's some there's some good fortune in
being able to get On Club nick a little. Bit
there's some good fortune in being able to be critical
of his, play and that good fortune comes with the
fact that he's. Not you, know none of these players are.

(41:48):
Perfect they are going to make. Mistakes but you don't
want the first time that you're chewing his butt out
to be halftime of THE lsu. Game because he's made
some mistakes that have put you in a bad. Spot
you want to be able to find reasons to be
critical of him in the. Spring, well, sir WHILE i

(42:09):
may not agree with what you, Say i'll defend to
the death you're right to say. IT i appreciate that
whether you agree or. Disagree all, right quick, break we'll
come back With. Moore here on A friday, afternoon it
is The show That shakes the South Land Fox Sports

Speaker 1 (42:24):

(43:34):
Drip you know the jingle seven three to two. Drip
That's Mett's, plumbing all, Right so you know what? Today
it is rivalry day in The Midlands Lexington River. Bluff
a little head to head action on the, pitch a
little soccer. Action excited about. It but because of that

(43:58):
and having to help my Buddy Christopher, thompson who helps
me with the, program get his weekend. Off in my weekend,
off we're gonna give you a little bit of our
interview that we did With Wim qualkinbush On monday here
on the, program reacting To clemson's basketball season coming to a.
Conclusion we'll give you about ten minutes Of Wim qualkinbush

(44:21):
right here on A friday. Afternoon, qualt welcome In. Hope
you had a great, weekend my Man, swanny what?

Speaker 6 (44:29):
Happened it feels Like i'm ACTUALLY i was talking to.
Somebody he feels like that happened Last, tuesday happened three weeks,
ago so it's it's been a. LOT i hope you're doing.

Speaker 2 (44:36):
Well, YEAH i am. MAN i don't really know where to.
BEGIN i, guess just to make it, easier let's start
with the loss to McNeice in THE Ncaa. Tournament clemson
is scoring thirteen, points looking completely out of sync in
the first. Half it kind of felt like WHEN i
watched McNeice Against purdue later That will wade through every

(44:59):
trick he had in his hat at The, tigers his alma,
mater and it worked. Out furious Comeback. Quault there's no
mistaking that. Fact but losing that, GAME i THINK i
said on social, MEDIA i THINK i called it it
was an unforgivable. Loss your, thoughts, well, YEAH i mean

(45:20):
what they did in the first half was like historically.

Speaker 6 (45:22):
Futrid you. Know as the guy who did halftime on,
RADIO i can tell you that was one of the
harder things to do with my entire professional, life with
the figure out a way to spend that. One to
a Largely clemson. Audience it was. Bad it was very,
bad and there was no spending. It it was very.
BAD i Thought Will wade did a masterable. JOB i

(45:43):
thought he did what he needed to, do which, is
you do something. CRAZY i w Shall poppy do it this,
year AND i respect the coach that's willing to do something.
Crazy and he admitted after the game he threw a
defense out that he maybe had used a handful of
possessions all, year really had never put it on eight like.
That anyone would have. Known and they he called it the.

(46:04):
JUNK i, mean it's like get in the. Name it's like,
This this defense doesn't make any. Sense and it Bothered.
Clemson now it Bothered clinton to a, point but they
still got fifteen to three point shots off and my
college taxon children said that thirteen.

Speaker 7 (46:19):
Of those he would consider to.

Speaker 6 (46:20):
Be open jump. Shots, now one other reason that what
Will wade did was brilliant is because he decided that
we can't let him get the ball inside because they
have been shooting it. Well and if you've been Following,
clinton you know that The tigers have not been shooting
it well in the last five to six games heading
up to, this and sure, enough they didn't shoot it well.

(46:41):
Again they shot one for fifteen in the first half from.
THREE i believe they were one for eighteen or something
like that before they finally made one or for sixteen.
SOMETHING i, mean it just it was. Awful it was
absolutely awful from a shooting. Standpoint and when you're playing
a zone that is designed to keep the ball out
of the, pain you're not gonna be able to just
throw throw it in. There you're gonna have to make some.

(47:01):
Shots and guess, What, purdue who beat, McNeice who had
seen the defense, before had forty minutes of tape to
be able to watch. It they too got open, shots
but they knocked them down and so McNeese had to
start taking their. Poison clinson never made McNeese take anything
other than we're not Letting sheflin get a good touch.

(47:21):
Inside we're not letting Lock in get a good touch.
Inside we're gonna frustrate. It and on the other end of,
things way too many offensive. Rebounds it wasn't just the,
shooting way too many offensive rebounds for, McNees way too
many miss box.

Speaker 7 (47:33):
Outs just a, horrible, enrible.

Speaker 6 (47:36):
Horrible novit very bad day that they almost won. Anyway
and that's kind of where Like i'll give Way away
credit for the adjustment he threw something out there that
was gonna Make clemson totally per placed that we're standing
there looking at stuff like they expected.

Speaker 2 (47:49):
To be open and it.

Speaker 6 (47:50):
Wasn't but the bottom line is they still almost won
because they got better players in, McNees because they they
were able to press and trap and force some turnovers
and make them uncomfortable in the. Game AND i thought
mcnieche really they sort of started to count their chickens
a little bit late in the. Game they were pulling it.
Out even announces ON tv were, going it's a little.
Late it's a little early to be acting like it's,

(48:11):
late you, know it's a little bit early to be
just pulling the ball. Out, so, yeah an inexcusable off
because of how you played in the first. Half mcnisse
is a good. TEAM i don't hold coaches accountable because
they don't have a crystal, ball because they can't read, minds,
okay but it felt like they didn't adjust as quickly
to what they saw they because they didn't know what
they were looking at. It it was just a wall

(48:32):
bumpy way to end such a such a memorable and
historic regular season to go out with that sort of
historically and that first half with such good shooters on
the roster that just did it make shots at the
end of the. Season it just it sort of confounds the.
Mind it's mind.

Speaker 2 (48:50):
Boggling you know. What you know what kind of blew
me away is you could feel it at eighteen to.
EIGHT i could feel the game was kind of slipping.
Away AND i know it's still early in that. Moment
just because of the way Clem you've seen it a
thousand times watching THE ncaa tournament right growing, up it
just had the feelings of that kind of. Game and
given the Way clemson had played in The Atlantic Coast

(49:11):
conference tournament Against louisville when they turned up the, PRESSURE
i thought for sure they would turn the pressure up
a little, bit maybe take locking, off get a little
smaller on the. Court but then you, know kind of
generate some baskets and some offense and some, turnovers and
they just didn't Quite they just sat back and let it.
Happen and that's, probably you, Know Brad brownell Is no

(49:33):
matter WHO i talk to About Brad, browdew they always
talk about what a great x's and o's coach he,
is AND i, agree AND i think he had a
very mature. Team BUT i felt like in that, Moment
Brad brownell didn't do enough to change the game In clemson's,
Favor and it just kind of it would be kind
of like if you thought you might be, sick but
you didn't go to the, doctor and then by the
time you, go the doctor, goes well it's too, late Mister.

(49:56):
Swan if you had rolled in here six months, ago you, go,
oh what WAS i? Doing how was an?

Speaker 7 (50:00):
Idiot you, know that's a that's a great companterson BECAUSE
i Mean brad brand help.

Speaker 6 (50:06):
Said in the post game and his opening, statement he,
SAID i didn't do enough to help my team battle
through it, today or something to that. Effect AND i
think he recognized that there were levers that he could
have pulled and strings that he could have pulled that
could have helped the team that he just didn't pull
for whatever. REASON i thought they went to the press
a little bit.

Speaker 3 (50:24):
Late but then.

Speaker 6 (50:25):
You're also playing a dangerous game of a team that
doesn't press all the. Time you, know if you do
it too, early you run out of. Gas but you
get so, like there's a there's a fine, balance there's
a fine balance on. That, ultimately here's WHAT i think he.
DID i think he trusted an older team with older
starters and older players to do what they've. Done we
hear in baseball all the. Time you, know if you're

(50:47):
having a rough, stretch people recognize that eventually you're gonna
sort of regress to the mean.

Speaker 7 (50:53):
Of the back of the the back your baseball.

Speaker 6 (50:55):
Car if the back of baseball car says you're a
four ear, pitcher.

Speaker 7 (50:58):
If you have a sixty r a that they're gonna.

Speaker 6 (51:01):
Keep putting you out there because chances are you're gonna
have some TWO eiri performances that bring you down. Before
that's kind of what he's thinking. About Chase, hunter who
was miserable in the first, half started, pressing was trying
to attack teams that weren't. There wating was, Bad shefflam was.
Bad everything's. Bad, Uh AND i think he put a
lot of trust In, hey i've got older, Players i've

(51:21):
got an older. Team they've been able to figure it
out this. Year many times they can figure it. Out
and by the, way from a coaching, standpoint if your
players at fifteen thirties and thirteen of them are, OPEN
i don't know what else you're supposed to. DO i
mean from it like people were, like, well.

Speaker 7 (51:35):
You, Know Brad brand don't got out. COACHED i mean.

Speaker 6 (51:37):
Kinda but coaches can't make shots for. You and we
know these guys can shoot because two weeks ago they
were shooting thirty nine. Percent they were top fifteen to
twenty in the country in three point. Precision it might
have been higher than that at times during the. Season
so this is not a team that was put together
that can't, shoot like wait for us as a team
that shot thirty percent or less all, year that's a

(51:58):
poorly constructive roster from a shooting point of. View clinton
was a will constructed rosin machine point of, view they
just didn't make shots in this particular. Game SO i
agree with your, premise auft Rapp. Roight, NOW i think
there are limitations to, that and ultimately he chose to
trust his, players probably longer than he should, have, which,
honestly if you're asking, ME i think that's a deal

(52:19):
with the devil that you make sometimes when you have
older teams that he trusts those players to figure it
out and they just couldn't do it for whatever.

Speaker 2 (52:27):
Reason On twitter at Quad talk everyday noon until three o'clock,
out of bounds with qualking bid one of five to
five the roar in The. Upstates so the transfer PORTAL
quad is going to be the new issue now For.
Clemson we kind of knew it was going to be
a part of it because of some of the attrition
my guys, Graduating Chase hunter and he And, shefflin et.
Cetera but then also the thought That Chauncey wiggins might

(52:50):
end up being. In he goes in, Today Dell jones
goes in, Today Asa thomas goes in. TODAY i had
talked With tyree S, ingram who writes fors on the.
Website we kind of Thought thomas might be a guy
that would jump. In the one that really shocked this
more than anything that was Del. Jones are any of
these guys potentially quought the entries that enter but then

(53:10):
return or do you think all three of these guys
are definitely out of The Tiger Town, WELL i, MEAN.

Speaker 6 (53:16):
I wouldn't rule it out. NECESSARILY i do think In clinton's,
program they're pretty.

Speaker 7 (53:21):
Upfront so if you enter the, portal it's.

Speaker 6 (53:24):
You, KNOW i, Mean i'm pretty Sure clinton's not gonna
come off their, price you, know if it's a money.
Issue they're not gonna find more. Money they know what
their guys are. Value they're very upfront with, them and
so if it's, that they're not gonna come off. It
if it's a role, issue they're not gonna come off that.
Either SO i don't really know what would change other
than you get in the portal and, realize, oh, shoot
there's not really a market for, me and for as the,

(53:44):
TOURNAMENTS i think this role is gonna Be, hey you
got to get better in every way a person could
get better if you want to contribute that all next,
year all, right you, KNOW i wish you. Well thanks
for being to get.

Speaker 7 (53:53):
A batchmouth rover for two.

Speaker 6 (53:54):
Years For Dell, JONES i MEAN i think he cost
himself some money to the last three games from the team
that has. You, now that doesn't mean somebody else isn't
gonna look at all this stuff that's kandalizing about Deal
jones to, say, hey they're not guaranteeing you a starting,
spot they're not giving YOU x amount of. Money we're
gonna say you're our starter FOR x amount of, money
and off you. GO i don't know what the conversations

(54:15):
are Like Withdell. JONES i see twenty reasons Why clinton
would want to retain. HIM i also give plenty of
reasons why you wouldn't Want Deal jones to be your
de facto starting point guard next, year especially with a
waiver situation still pending With Jameon. Zachary because you've Got
Dylan hunter And James. Zachary are you Starting hunter And
zachary And jones in that? SITUATION i don't necessarily think.

(54:37):
SO i Think jones is coming off the bench one
more year BECAUSE i don't want to be that small
at the guard to Get i'd rad to be a
little bit longer at the, wing which is something that
At clinton kind of worked around this year when they
went To Dylan hunter in the lineup Alongside zachary and
And Chase. Hunter and then from the standpoint Of Johnson,
WIGGINS i think it's a good time for him to.
LEAVE i just Think clinton sort of bet on his

(54:59):
upside and develop when they decided not to pursue That
Jack clark waiver all the way through last. Year they
let him get into. Portal he see you reap the
rewards of, that And chopinson didn't take the. Steps he
didn't rebound well enough he shot it. Worse he got more.
Opportunities once, again he got an opportunity to, start and
once again he didn't do anything with that. Opportunity did

(55:20):
he ask some good ball that, yet did he have
some good games? Yet but ultimately he's a kid that
is just he doesn't have the type a personality to
grab the bull by the. Horde he's kind of a
two nice kid to do what you need him to
do in a lot of, ways which is kind of
a weird thing to stat agains.

Speaker 7 (55:36):
Him he's a super human.

Speaker 6 (55:38):
BEING i told somebody, today he's the kind of guy
you want to date your. Daughter like just he's a
really good. Dude he just didn't have the hard edge
necessary to go. Rebound he had two rebounds in thirty
minutes of a McNeese game where they gave him EIGHTEEN
i believe he was eighteen offensive.

Speaker 7 (55:53):
Rebounds you're six to ten.

Speaker 6 (55:55):
Guys got to stick his nose in and rebound a
little bit better than. That and he didn't shoot it well.
ENOUGH i, mean at the end of the, year If
Chauncea wiggins was not shooting it and they weren't, pressing
he was almost an unplayable. Guy because of the matchup
issues that he presents for you defensively and how you
have to help him on that end of the. Floor
SO i think it was a good time to part
for Both clinton And. CHAUNCEY i think for all three

(56:17):
guys that entered the portal, today you could see that
they could replace the. Production the only guy who's upside
you might not be able to replace Is Dale. Jones
but keep this in mind With dell, two he went
to three prep schools in the last three years of high.
School this means he's doring for five schools in five.
Years this might just be how he wants to operate
in his. Life SO i mean that was kind of

(56:39):
a red flight for me when he got To clinton,
anyway And i'll be interesting to see if that's sort
of the tenor of his careers and move.

Speaker 2 (56:46):
Forward so there you. Go some of our time With
William quwalkinbush from earlier in the week and again since that.
INTERVIEW i, mean you Had Jake Hide breeder into the transfer.
Portal you've got people out there tweeting the memes of
Will smith standing. ALONE i guess it's the final episode
of The Fresh prince of Bel. Air my wife kind
of beats me up a little bit on. THIS i

(57:06):
did not really watch that show all that. Often but
looking at the, roster as we talked about yesterday on the,
SHOW i, mean it is a bear cupboard In, clemson

(57:29):
and it is a complete. Rebuild but if there's anything
we've learned over the past few days talking about THE
ncaa tournament watching, it they are dudes out, there and
you go and land the, dudes you can land yourself
back in THE ncaa. TOURNAMENT i think the bigger question
is Has clemson put itself with the little run that they've.

(57:50):
Had have The tigers put themselves in a spot where
they're seen as a program that dudes would want to
come play. At and you've had Your Joe girarde, rollie
and you've Had Victor lockins roll. IN i, mean we've
we've seen the transfers come in and have an, Impact
but you haven't brought in the krem de La. Kreme

(58:13):
you haven't brought in the guys that are the lead
dogs inside the locker. Room and you look, around but
you better grab some lead. Dogs you better find some
dudes because there's not there's not much on the, roster

(58:33):
you can go get you some mid major. Guys, yay
they better be some mid, major big time. Ballplayers i'll
tell you that. Much they better be some mid, major
big time ballplayers because if they're just mid major guys

(58:56):
and they can't, play you ain't you ain't going to
THE ncaa turn next. Year there is absolutely a ton of.
Turnover record breaking numbers of players are in the, portal record.
Breaking it is a disservice to the student. Athletes but

(59:24):
if there are a record breaking number of guys, in
then you've got to be able to go get enough
of those guys to. Win and that is the. Challenge
that is the challenge For Brad. Brown, now by the,
way you, know one of the names a lot of
people like to talk about for years when it's come

(59:48):
down To clemson Is Shaka. Smart no matter where shakas
coached after being an assistant At, clemson WHETHER i was
an assistant At, florida AT, vcu At, texas or At
marquette where he's where he currently, coaches his name gets

(01:00:10):
brought up a. Lot and he's still pretty. Young With
shaka forty, SEVEN i mean he's getting he's getting an
he's my, age BUT i saw this stat About Shaka.
Smart in his last NINE ncaa tournament, Trip Shaka smart
has been eliminated by a team at least a three
seed line worse than he is seven times and at

(01:00:33):
least five seeds worse five. Times Shaka smart in the
tournament three and eight against the spread in four and
seven straight up when he's not an. Underdog seven losses
is a Favorite Shaka. Smart that's, wild isn't, it especially

(01:00:57):
given sort of the aura that people have about him
or had about. Him maybe that's that have or Had
Swania MAYBE i should say. Had and by the, way
we were talking With qualk in that interview From monday
earlier About clemson's putrid thirteen, points Pet damill tweeted out

(01:01:20):
after that, game how bad has it been For? Clemson
they put forth the worst performance by AN acc team
in the first half of AN ncuba tournament game in a,
generation dating back To butler and Wake, forest when The
debadigas scored just ten in a ballgame that according TO
espn that are going TO espn stats and, news so,

(01:01:45):
hey one't. Great it was not great For clemson at
the NC Doublea, tournament But fortunately it's in the rearview
mirror for The, tigers not in the rearview mirror for
the following fan. Bases as at seven oh nine, Tonight

(01:02:06):
Michigan state And Old missile face off ON, cbs followed
by nine thirty nine ON Cbs auburn And, michigan and
then at seven thirty nine On TRUE Tv tennessee And,
kentucky and then ten oh nine ON Tbs houston And.
Purdue all, right quick, break we'll come back with more
here on A friday afternoon of the Show The shakes The.
Southland stay with, us rocking and rolling along with you

(01:02:27):
on A friday afternoon The Show THE Shakespa Southland Clemson
Sports talk three four five zero zero eighty six again
comes up, tonight seven oh, Nine Michigan state And old
miss facing off in The South. Region Michigan state the two,
Seed ole miss the sixth, seed and then on the flip,

(01:02:47):
side you've Got Michigan state's, rivals The Michigan wolverines the
five seed Facing, auburn the top seed in the entire.
Tournament so TWO sec, schools Two big ten schools rivals
galore In. Atlanta and then you've also Got at seven thirty,
nine you've Got kentucky And tennessee facing. Off that's ON

(01:03:11):
tbs And TRUE. Tv tennessee is the two seed in The,
Midwest kentucky the three, seed and then you've got top
seed To houston and for seed To purdue facing off
at ten. Nine those games are all being played out In, Indianapolis.
Indiana of, Course Rick, barnes the Former clips Of tiger
head coach there With, tennessee never won a national. Championship

(01:03:35):
is this the year that Slick rick punches his national championship?
TROPHY i don't think. So and then There's Tom, izzo
who did punch the national championship of his you, know
career what back in two. THOUSAND i, mean Tom, izzo

(01:04:01):
give that guy some credit for. Longevity Tom izzo has
been coaching At Michigan state since nineteen ninety, five thirty.
Years thirty. Years he's had some incredible, seasons but just

(01:04:21):
ONE Ncaa tournament championship in his fifth season. There and
they've been great at. TIMES i, mean they went to
the final four in ninety, nine two, thousand one oh,
five oh, nine, ten, fifteen. Nineteen people would dream of.
That people would dream of. That they won six Been

(01:04:44):
Big ten tournament titles in ninety, nine, twenty twenty, twelve,
fourteen sixteen to. Nineteen they've won Eleven Big ten regular season.
Titles he's seventy years. Old he's been the coach of
The year twice in college. Basketball AND i don't know

(01:05:10):
When Tom mizzlo is gonna hang it. Up he's seventy
years old right. Now and what we've, seen, oof got
a hair on the, microphone tickle on my. Nose, sorry,
whoo had to battle through that. One what we've seen

(01:05:38):
is coaches tend to, push you, know seventy five's about the.
Limit coach k was about seventy five when he. RETIRED
i Think Roy williams was like seventy sixty, nine seventy
somewhere in there when he. Retired it it is a
sport where you make a lot of, money, well college
sports in, general and coach you make a lot of,

(01:06:01):
money but you're not working the nine to five at the,
desk and recruiting is certainly, difficult but you're around a
sport that you absolutely. Love it's a lot of hard
work on and off the. Court there's no doubt about.
That you miss a lot of time with your. Family
there are some highs and lows that come along with

(01:06:23):
that as. Well but at his, age he's well passed
the being around your children when they're doing the things
that they. Do like he's at the stage of where
he's a grandpa, Right like the grandkids are the thing
he might be missing out, on but he likely spoils
them and the parents probably wish they that he. Wouldn't

(01:06:48):
but he also probably FEELS i would imagine these coaches
FEEL i don't want to put words in their, mouths
BUT i would imagine you feel a little bit like
you've been absent from your child's life because of how
busy you were in the prime of your. Career you've
been able to you, know you make meaningful, moments you
make the moments that you have, meaningful but you, know

(01:07:12):
just kind of thinking through his age and where he,
is like you could easily see Tom izzo losing this
ballgame tonight and then, saying, hey you, Know i've had
a great career and it just comes out of left.
Field but you really never, Know you really never. Know

(01:07:35):
but he's at that age where it's possible at any
given moment he could step away from the. Game and you,
know it's amazing to me to think About Rick barnes
being that same. AGE i, Mean, Barnes he's seventy and
as much success As clemson has had Under brad Brown

(01:07:58):
l and as good as they've been over the past
couple of. Seasons one of the Topics i've talked about
with you here IS i think about what If Rick
barnes had been At clemson since what it would have
been nineteen ninety, four so he would have been At
clemson a little bit longer Than izzo's At Michigan state

(01:08:21):
ninety four For barnes And Tiger town when he, ARRIVED i,
mean what if he had Seen clemson the Way brownell
apparently Sees clemson as the final destination the Play and
maybe it won't be For, brownew but you know WHAT i. Mean,
LIKE i, Mean brownell seems very comfortable. There but what
If barnesy had stuck it out instead of leaving For

(01:08:44):
texas in nineteen ninety, Eight, LIKE i think the complete
the story of Who clemson is and what this basketball
program could be is. Different and it doesn't mean you
would have won the national. TITLE i, mean He's he's
only been the One final. Four he went to the
final With texas AND o. Three that's. It that's All.
Barnsy with all the talent he had Through texas just

(01:09:05):
won Three big twelve regular season. TITLES i don't think
he ever won The Big twelve championship in. Basketball think about.
That all those great players that came through during his
time At, Texas Kevin, DURANT Tj. FORD i what was
that big power forwards name that was so good for
a while in THE nba and then had mark a hearty.

(01:09:26):
SHOW i think it Was Marcus. Aldridge you didn't win
the conference, championship How but, yeah WHEN i look at
these guys in their, seventies you, Know, barnsey he's been
At tennessee for ten. Years feels like he just got
there and they're as good as they've. Been but if

(01:09:46):
he gets beat tonight at, seventy he get hang it up.
Too you just never, Know you really just never. Know all,
right quick, Break we'll come back with more on A friday.
Afternoon keep it. Locked closing in on the back end
of the program for. Sure don't forget The Clypson tiger baseball.
Team later, today over In atlanta six o'clock they will get,

(01:10:06):
underway so not too long from now getting underway against
The yellowjacket should be a really good. Matchup, again two
of the top teams in The Atlantic Coast conference clips
into one of the top teams in the. Country we'll
see how they do on the road their first road
series of the season as they'll head To. ATLANTA i
remember they opened in that neutral site venue out In,

(01:10:29):
texas and then they played a game In columbia and
some games At. Greenville but this is the first chance
this clips Of tiger baseball teams really been on the.
Road but in our number one we heard a lot
From davos swing. Again he spent about thirty minutes with the,
media AND i do try to give it as much
of it to you here THAT i think is. Relevant
but you, know one of the things we talked about

(01:10:49):
With Tim bray yesterday was the fact that you, know
the spring game and the conversations around you, know maybe
playing against another team during the spring And damo's we, Said,
Hey i've been saying it for a.

Speaker 4 (01:11:02):
WHILE i think y'all can probably rewind every spring practice
for the past twelve, years AND i Think i've said
that for years and years and. Years i've said that.
Forever it's never been in main exstan. ME i mean
from pee wee league to middle school to high. School
we are the only level of football to THE, nfl

(01:11:22):
and we don't get.

Speaker 3 (01:11:23):
The practice against.

Speaker 4 (01:11:23):
Anybody we can't scrimmage Anybody's.

Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
I've never understood.

Speaker 4 (01:11:28):
That and so as a head, coach you, know anytime
somebody grabs an, ankle all twenty two of them on
the field or your, guys, right it'd be nice to
only be fifty percent.

Speaker 3 (01:11:37):
Invested you, know it just is what it. Is and
plus you know that's why THE nfl does.

Speaker 4 (01:11:41):
That they need to be able to go and you
get comfortable going against each other and see a different you,
know and you have a, practice you control, it and
you do someone on on some past rush and inside
seven on.

Speaker 3 (01:11:50):
Seven you, know there's a lot of things new situation will.
Work i've never understood. That in, fact we're the only
sport in college that can't do.

Speaker 4 (01:11:59):
It baseball play, people soccer plays, people basketball run down
in Scrimmage, Georgia i've NEVER i don't, KNOW i don't
know who. KNOWS i don't know why we do half
the stuff we, do but it's kind of kind of.

Speaker 2 (01:12:09):
Crazy maybe one Day devoswheny was also asked About alabama
Transfer Jeremiah alexander and now he's done during, Springball, yeah, he's.

Speaker 3 (01:12:18):
He's he made a couple of nice plays.

Speaker 4 (01:12:19):
Today you, know he's a guy THAT i think just
LIKE i said About, tristan you, know because again he's
not only transitioning to linebacker now he's transitioning to new
terminology and all that.

Speaker 3 (01:12:30):
Stuff SO u but he's.

Speaker 4 (01:12:33):
He's it's been great because we've been able to get
him a ton of reps and a ton of, work you,
know same.

Speaker 3 (01:12:37):
THING i. THINK i think you'll see just like him And.
TRISTAN i put him in the same.

Speaker 4 (01:12:40):
CATEGORY i think both those guys will continue to go
like that between now and Into.

Speaker 2 (01:12:46):
August debos when was also asked to give some insight
Into purdue Transfer Will helton what he's seen from him as.

Speaker 4 (01:12:51):
Well, well he's just played a lot more football at
this level at his.

Speaker 8 (01:12:55):
Position SO i, mean he's, he's he's looks like he
he just looks like he's been here for four, years you,
KNOW i, mean he looks exactly LIKE i thought you
should LOOK i had a sack.

Speaker 3 (01:13:08):
Today he's he's gonna help.

Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
Us Debo sweny was also asked about what it's like
between now and kick off of the season trying to
manage guys that are injured and figure, out you, know
how you kind of go about it to make sure
everybody's as healthy as they can.

Speaker 4 (01:13:21):
Be, Yeah, well so a lot of work to do this,
summer and so there's a bunch of bunch that happens
between now AND. Lsu so we got again the whole
summer skills and, drills all that, stuff and then you
got all the camp so and then a lot of the,
guys a lot of the guys that are out are
guys that have played a lot of all force and
we know a lot about so you know that that

(01:13:44):
part of it is is.

Speaker 3 (01:13:45):
Good but there's some others unfortunately that like Like.

Speaker 4 (01:13:49):
Jarvis now who's out for the rest of the, spring
but he did get some good work that you'd hate to.
See And Jay lou you, KNOW i, mean he's played
a lot of, football but it would have been nice
to have him out there this. Spring but when we
become a complete, team will be will be a deeper
team and we'll.

Speaker 3 (01:14:03):
Have we'll have a lot of experience show.

Speaker 4 (01:14:07):
Up, so, uh those guys will they're Not they're not
starting from scratch when we get out there on the
field with them In. August you know a lot of these,
Guys Walker parks And Elijah, thurman he's he got to
play last. Year he got some good experienced saddlers played
a lot of football FOR Us tristan, obviously he's played
a lot of. Football Jay haynes got some good experience last.
Year he's not a freshman. Anymore he's in the red shirt.

(01:14:29):
Sophomore olsen will get him. Back he's played Some so,
man what a great opportunity For sap And venting tour
and and And Logan. Brooking they've had a fire hose
on them all.

Speaker 3 (01:14:39):
All all all. Spring just you, know here it, comes you,
know and so that's been that's been good for.

Speaker 2 (01:14:45):
Him dabo sween was also ask if it was a
blessing to kind of be able to see, though even
though you've got these injuries some of the other guys
and get a chance to get your eyeballs on. Them.

Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
YEAH i think the glasses always have full with. Me,
uh if you all have been around me long.

Speaker 4 (01:14:57):
Enough you, know Hopefully i've Hopefully i've demonstrated that throughout
my time that, that you, KNOW i try to always
see it as half fullard and there's a positive and.
Everything and you, know obviously wish everybody was out. There,
okay well they're, not so, man.

Speaker 3 (01:15:11):
What can we? Do, man here's what we can.

Speaker 4 (01:15:13):
Do we can Get Braydon jacobs And Easton ware And Big.
Moose we can get. Them we can get them all.

Speaker 3 (01:15:19):
This work and really bring them further. Along.

Speaker 4 (01:15:23):
Man we can Get sap and Ventcore logan brooking more
reps while you, know Because olsen's gonna come, back and
obviously he's gonna he's gonna be a key guy right.
There we can really force the. Issue jay's been. OUT
i hate, that but it's allowed us to really really
Develop adam and get him a ton of work at that,

(01:15:45):
position which he needs to grow his confidence against good.
People Uh so all that's, been you, know really. Good
Uh so there's, yeah there's definitely a silver. Lining h
same thing you know at linebacker and forcing the issue
with some of those.

Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
Guys you take a guy like wood as we.

Speaker 4 (01:16:00):
Feel pretty confident him and got him on a pitch
count and it's not it's we just we just know
what we have and we really need to Strain. Jeremiah
we need to strain Wood, Edge little Wood, ass and
we need to Strain Cooper taylor and you know all those.
Guys that part of. It, yeah there's a civil lining to.

Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
It final thing From Davos. Sweeney he was asked about
the job that he Feels Ben bulwer has done coaching,
linebackers pig and.

Speaker 4 (01:16:25):
Mud you, know he just he just rolls around out,
there jumps in there with him and he's he loves.
IT i, mean he's he's. Great he's the same guy every,
day works really hard at. IT i mean just like
he did as a. PLAYER i MEAN i just see
him approach it every day just like he did when
he was a. Player here he shows, up he's, prepared
he's he's he brings a lot of, toughness he's, loud you.

Speaker 3 (01:16:46):
Know so it's been. Great it's been a been a
good fit for.

Speaker 2 (01:16:48):
Us so there you. Go That's Dabo. Sweeney we gave
you as much of that as possible here on the program.
TODAY i think three segments Of, sweeney if you include
the one late in the program. YESTERDAY i, mean you
didn't get the whole, shebang but we try to do
as much as we can, get in part for you
and in part for, me because you know this is
the busy, season because we're headed over To Lexington High
school tonight to take on The wildcats crosstown Rivals River

(01:17:13):
Bluff lexington both teams three and one in reagion four
or FIVE. A so we'll see how it all shakes
out on the pitch this evening over At Lexington High.
School all, right quick, break we'll come. Back we'll put
a bow on The friday edition of the. Show the
Shakespare South. Lane It's clempson. Support start right. Here Fox
Sports radio fourteen hundred and on The iHeartRadio. App what

(01:17:35):
have you done for me?

Speaker 3 (01:17:36):
Lately it's a fair. Question just don't lose sight of
the bigger. Picture don't forget.

Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
History lucky for us At, clemson the answer to the
questions what have you done for me? Lately and what
have you?

Speaker 3 (01:17:53):
Done always are the. Same we win.

Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
Final segment on A friday afternoon, again coming up, tonight
seven o Nine eastern ON. Cbs it'll be the second
seed in The South Michigan state facing off with six
Seated Old, miss and then at nine thirty nine in

(01:19:10):
The south ON, cbs it'll be top Seeded auburn and
fifth Seeded. Michigan and AS i mentioned earlier in the,
week things should BE i would think that things are
gonna be absolutely electric In atlanta for that, one having
two teams from THE sec and two teams from The

(01:19:34):
Big ten In michigan And Michigan state all in, one
building the hatred the disdain across the, Board michigan fans
rooting For Old, Miss Michigan state fans rooting For, Auburn
auburn fans rooting For Michigan, State Old miss fans rooting For.

(01:19:56):
Michigan like is it is a? Mess? Oh what a
tangled web we weave in The south region as those
matchups take place this evening again seven to nine For
Old miss And Michigan state ON, cbs and then nine
to thirty, nine and based off of the start times
of last night's, games don't bank on, that. Right and

(01:20:18):
then of course in The, midwest where Your tigers would
have been, playing it'll be second Seeded tennessee and third
seed To. Kentucky two se seams TWO sec teams facing
off for the right to go to The elite. Eight
that's a seven thirty nine start ON tbs And TRUE.
Tv and then at ten oh nine it'll Be houston

(01:20:40):
And purdue facing off for the right to battle one
of those TWO sec. Schools and speaking of the TWO sec,
schools in their previous matchups this, season The wildcats went
To tennessee and won seventy eight seventy, three and then
also best did The volunteers at home seventy five sixty.

(01:21:03):
Four so The, wildcats who went ten and eight in THE,
sec were one of the teams that Gave tennessee two
of their six losses this. Year and so will you,
know we always talk about, this it's difficult to beat
a team three. Times can The wildcats figure out how

(01:21:25):
to Top tennessee for a third time this? Season as
these TWO sec schools face off tonight In, Indianapolis tennessee
favored by ESPN's matchup predictor sixty three point one percent
to thirty six point nine. Percent The volunteers favored In

(01:21:47):
vegas by four and a, half but are zero to
two against The wildcats this. Year so that's the early.
Contest and then again Tonight houston And purdue at ten oh.
Nine bank on that one being about ten. Thirty bank
on being up past. Midnight if you're gonna find out
who are the final teams in The elite Eight houston

(01:22:11):
eight and a half point favorites, there AND i should
tell You Michigan state three and a half point favorites
Over Old miss And auburn nine and a half point
favorites Over. Michigan, Now clemson baseball also coming up in
just a few. Minutes they will go on the, road
or they Will they're already on the. Road they're over In,

(01:22:31):
atlanta getting ready warming up as we speak for this
six o'clock first pitch against The Georgia Tech. YELLOWJACKETS i
told you yesterday this has gotta. BE i don't know
What clempson's record is in all of their baseball games,
historically but one seventeen and three dating back to nineteen
oh two in this. SERIES i mean imagine that these

(01:22:54):
two teams have played two hundred and what forty two,
times And clemson's won one hundred and twenty two of
them And Georgia tech's one one hundred and. Seventeen that's
as tight as it can Get Aiden kannock on the
bump today For Clemson tate McKee on the bump For Georgia.
Tech saturday's game will take place at four Pm sundays
at one, o'clock all of them on THE Acc. Network

(01:23:15):
clemson has a one to oh road. Record isn't it
strange that you could be twenty eight games into the
season and have a one to oh record on the
road at this. Point The tigers split two midweek games
this past, week losing the number twenty One Coastal carolina
eight to two and then winning On wednesday nine to

(01:23:36):
one Over. Presbyterian The tigers enter of the ball game
averaging seven point nine runs per, game batting two eighty
seven with a four to forty four slugging percentage and
a four to twenty nine on base percentage with thirty four. Steals,
now our good, Buddy Tiger, chuck he is the WHAT

(01:23:56):
i would, say the quintessential said. Baseball i'm not gonna
call him a. Fan not gonna Call Tiger chuck a.
FAN i think that is an. Understatement Tiger chuck is
A i hesitate on Expert Tiger. CHUCK i DON'T i
know you want me to lay you is? That but
he knows what he's talking, about he texts as To.

(01:24:18):
Swani clemps's won twenty three games at the time that he,
texteday But i'll tell, you we have some releases that
the plate can't hit for power average and we strike
out too. Much maybe some of our transfers just aren't that. Good.
Oof we'll see how it plays. Out big series for
The tigers as they take their business on the road this.

(01:24:40):
Weekend will find out how it all plays out On.
Monday until, then as, always you'll take care now and
CoA tigers
