Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Monday morning, Ladies and gentlemen, welcome in it as
coffee and company fueled by Thornton's here at news Radio
eight forty whas a Monday morning has arrived. And heck
of a weekend for me. And I love being able
to say that I had a great weekend. But I
can't really tell you any any specific thing that made
it great. It was just it was just nice, relaxing,
didn't go by too fast. And I guess one thing

(00:22):
I should mention. It was my wife's birthday, so that's
why it was a great weekend because we were celebrating her.
I probably should have mentioned that if she's a good things,
she's not listening. She's still asleep. But you know, my
football team that I am a lunatic fan for, they
can let me down in a major way on Friday
and I can still have a good weekend. I think
that speaks to what maturity on my end.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Absolutely again, I mean it was there's bigger priorities there.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah. Of course walking out of the stadium on Friday
night was not fun. And I you know, am I
surprise they end up losing another close game? Not really,
because they've kind of shown they can do that. But
that was a for both teams really on Friday, it
kind of felt like who wants.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
To lose this more?

Speaker 1 (01:01):
Who really wants to who? It was there for both
to take and run with a couple of times, especially Louisville,
and they were just like, yeah, you know what, you
can have it. We don't we don't really need it. Dabbo,
you've had a rough year, go ahead and uh, you
can have this one. I mean, I'm being sarcastic, of course,
but that was that was brutal. But when sports can't ruin,
when sports doesn't ruin my weekend, I feel like, hey,

(01:22):
I'm growing up over here.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Look at me.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
You'll be amazed that the older, the more you progress.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
On through life's journey.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
You know, sports are always important, but there's also bigger
priorities that are at hand, like like yourself. We celebrated
my daughter's birthday this week.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Nice and so it was.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
It was nice and it does kind of take on
that other focus if you will.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
It stings a little bit, that's that's okay.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
I'm sure.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
It was a quiet walk out of ellen n Stadium.
I did notice, excuse me, when I was walking through
Germantown on Friday, in Schwitzburg area. There are a ton
of Clemson fans that were here.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yes, they were all in Germany, they were.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
They were everywhere in Louisville. I mean I was out
and about during the day, even actually on Thursday and
saw some. And then as we got closer to kickoff,
they were everywhere, and they traveled quite a bit. And
I give them credit. If there's ever a year not
to travel and watch your team. I mean, they entered
that game four and five, and yet they probably had
as much representation as you'll see at a Louisville home

(02:19):
game from another team outside of Kentucky, which technically is
a you know, they're on the road teams sometimes when
they're here. I mean, honestly, Kentucky fans show up to
louis games with Kentucky's playing Tennessee.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
They just do that.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
That's kind of how they're wired. But yeah, Clemson fans
were there in a big way, and yeah, they were
able to walk out with a victory, one of the
few that they've had this year. And we'll talk a
little more about Louisville season right now, because I think
what it comes down to is just Hey, find a
way to not lose to Kentucky and we'll regroup for
next year. Because this has been, without question, a year
of missed opportunity. And I think you could make the

(02:49):
case that it's the second straight year where you're saying
another year where man, if you just got out of
your own way here there maybe even one other time,
not meaning collectively you avoid one avoidable goof of many.
And I think you're talking about different seasons and that's
just it's a tough pill to swallow. But again, you know,

(03:10):
I think I think I'm going through like a live therapy.
I feel like I'm laying on that long couch at
a therapist office, just talking through it with you guys,
because you've.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
Been holding on to it since Friday. I had you're
able to the weekend, but now here we are.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, my kids, my wife's birthday. That was a good
distraction and here I am just opening up at five
oh nine in the morning. I guess, really, you know,
going through it. But we'll talk more sports throughout the morning.
The government shutdown, of course, came to an end last week,
and this week, I guess is when you really start
to feel, uh, the real impact of I guess maybe
what we were going without because airline travel is expected
to be much better by the end of this week,

(03:44):
but also the snap benefits that of course was a
big company that was a big element to the entire
thing people going without. And then the fight between the
Trump administration and a federal judge saying, hey, you've got
funds set aside in case something like this happens. This
is when you're supposed to start using that, and of
course there was resistance and really just a mess. But
because of this outage, it sounds as if they've determined

(04:06):
some potential fraud within that to where there may be
some in fact, maybe a lot that end up having
to kind of go through the process once again to
see if they qualify. And that could be one It
could be an eye opener that people were qualifying when
they shouldn't have been, but also just it could if
that's me, I'm thinking, okay, another here we go, we
come out of the of the government shutdown, and I

(04:28):
know I'm going to get my benefits back. But then
I was told, hey, you're gonna be good to go,
but wait a second, if you if you already have
those funds, they weren't supposed to give them to you,
so maybe you should. It was just a mess overall.
But now the thought of the potential timeline of okay,
I've submitted, how long does it take for somebody to
tell me if in fact I qualify, and if so,
like when do I actually receive said benefits? So again,

(04:51):
the government shutdown. It was a record breaker, and we're
back up and running. But again, it seems as if
this week's going to be the one that really sort of,
you know, start to kind of see things completely back
back back to where they were prior.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
We'll see.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, and more clarity on those the ten thousand dollars
bonus apparently going to the TSA workers in Houston, if
I'm not mistaken as opposed to spread out, And then
everybody's wondering. I was reading a niche article on the
tariff refunds that the President wants to issue.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
How's that going to be issued?

Speaker 2 (05:20):
If they can even do.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
It, If they can do it, which of course, hey,
I'm sure people will take that gladly, but I just
I get the sense that that that just doesn't seem
quite realistic. But hey, we'll see. Also YouTube TV and
Google well, YouTube TV and Google the same thing. YouTube
TV at ESPN and Disney are now they've they've they've
made it work. And if you can't see who the
clear winner in this was, we'll talk about it. Because

(05:43):
nobody wanted to really acknowledge that when it comes to leverage,
it's all about having something that has value. ESPN has
something that has more value than anything when it comes
to live viewership in this country, and they don't have
any competition, right like YouTube TV, thinking that, well, eventually
people are just gonna decide they don't like sports anymore.
They're gonna be customers of ours because they like YouTube TV.
And it's not about like what are you talking about,

(06:05):
Like they can get it elsewhere for cheaper than what
you like. Nobody was gonna choose you over sports. I mean,
I don't know everybody's obsessed with sports like me, but like,
it's a big part of our culture. And if you
can get it and pay less than what you're already
paying for your live TV, and you've had the realization that, oh, yeah,
I don't really watch live T if it's TV, if
it's not sports. I mean, Disney losing five million a day,

(06:27):
that's going to add up and arrogance, almost to think
that people wouldn't wouldn't side with what they just want.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Right.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
So we're busy this morning. We've got the full crew
here and we hope you hang out. Why would you
not stick with us?

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Right here?

Speaker 1 (06:39):
It news Radio eight forty whas. That's right, It is
a Monday morning here at news Radio eight forty whas
coffee and company with you, and we are Fieldbeth Thornton's
keep them in mind. For breakfast, I stopped in this morning.
For me, it was just just my addiction to these
monster energy drinks. And I did not get breakfast because
I'm not a big breakfast I mean, I like breakfast

(07:01):
food and I eat breakfast, but more than anything, I
just don't like eating before I go on the air,
and I don't eat while I'm on the air, even
like a snack for some reason, it just throws me off.
But it was hard to resist all the great options.
We're talking. Just a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit that
I don't That's not something that I typically pick up,
but it looked delicious this morning. I always go with

(07:21):
the sausage, egg and cheese croissant, but now they've got
biscuits and gravy, which is new. They have breakfast tacos,
they have the breakfast sandwiches with the French toast as
the bun, and just a lot of good options, delicious options.
So keep them in mind for breakfast, also keep them
in mind for whatever you need to keep you fueled
for the day ahead. And we are fueled by Thornton's.

(07:44):
We got the full crew here Nick Coffee. That to me,
you just heard Scott Fitzgerald, John Alden alongside also John Shannon.
He'll be in with some news for you guys coming
up here at about five thirty. Gonna be a dry
day today with sunshine. Not gonna get above sixty at
least that's not the expectation. But one of those days
where if you're in the upper fifties, to me, it's
all about the sunshine, because if it's not sunny and

(08:04):
it's in the fifties, it's it's chilly. At least to
me it is. But you get that sun going and
it's actually it's actually pretty nice. But tomorrow that is
when the wet weather arrives, so I'll be prepared for that.
I feel like we've had a pretty I don't know,
pretty mild. I guess late fall, pre winter, wouldn't you say, John.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
I mean, we think it's been pretty up and down
like this past week, and we had seventy degrees in
the middle of November.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
That feels pretty odd for.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
A Saturday afternoon when the sun was shine and it
did it was warm, and it was that it was
that noticeably, Hey, it's not supposed to be this warm,
because it's still kind of felt like, you know, the
wind and just it looks like fall outside certainly, but
that warm temperature.

Speaker 5 (08:42):
And then the week before we had the couple of
days where it snowed fall. I mean, I know we
didn't get an accumulation, but I mean just the fact
that it was snowing in general felt like it when
I tell.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
You, weeks go by insanely too fast. This may be
an example. Last week. Was it last Monday we had
actual snow or was it two weeks ago?

Speaker 5 (08:57):
It was Monday or Tuesday?

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Okay, yeah, because that was I mean, yeah, we started
the show knowing that there were some flurries on the
ground from Sunday's snow that came down, flurries more than
anything really, But then sure enough, by the time we
ended the show, we had areas of like Bargetown Road
out towards Parton Road, I'm sorry, like Dixie Highway near
the Salt River Bridge there where they had like a

(09:20):
sheet of ice. So yeah, to go from that to
what we had this past Saturday where at some point
it was I think above seventy degrees here in the area.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
So it was nice.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
And if you are enjoy if you enjoy warm weather,
I hope you really enjoyed it, because it won't be
here for long. Eventually we'll start getting those cold temperatures
to where when you get to the fifties it's considered,
you know, a real treat. So again, today going to
be pleasant. Tomorrow that rain's coming in. Could you believe
next week is Thanksgiving?

Speaker 5 (09:48):
I can't believe it is.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
It is crazy.

Speaker 5 (09:50):
I'm ready for it though. I love I love Thanksgiving,
Christmas giving me all the hot.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Look, I've been I've bit my tongue on this for
a while, but I'm starting to hear more this season
than ever as far as people just having a problem
with those who decide to put Christmas stuff up before Thanksgiving.
I want to speak for all of us who would
keep the Christmas tree up year round. If acceptable in

(10:15):
putting up Christmas stuff doesn't mean you're anti Thanksgiving? Does
it mean that you don't love Thanksgiving just as much?
I think that people who who get threatened by that,
that are triggered to let you know that you're doing
something wrong, they may be the ones that have an
insecurity about how they value which holidays. My love for
Christmas and everything that comes with it. I listen to
Christmas music this morning. I'm a psycho. I'm a sicko

(10:38):
for this stuff, but it has nothing to do with
my love for Thanksgiving. Love it just as much. And
if me putting up lights on around my house makes
you feel a certain way about how we appreciate holidays,
you need to just you got your own.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Issues, all right.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
We've got traving no weather updates on the way. Also
a sports update coming up as well right here at
news Radio eight forty WHS. It is five thirty five
here news Radio eight forty whas. Happy Monday morning to you.

fight for you again. Alex Rwhiteplcseudistracted Driver dot Com. So
this is one of those posts on Facebook that goes
viral and viral, and I'm sure no one is actually surprised.
So there is a Southern Indiana woman who shared photos
from her flight over the weekend out of Louisville, and

(11:57):
it was the flight that was carrying the mains of
one of the UPS pilots that was headed back to Dallas.
So before the passengers boarded pilot's airport staff ups, employees
and the family of this of this pilot who was
one of the victims in the crash a couple of
weeks ago. They lined the tarmac and a quiet ceremony

(12:18):
as you could see the casket being brought on the
plane and a just a powerful thing to see. And
again one of those that it's probably hard for people
to not see it on their timeline and hit share
just because that's that's how powerful powerful the visual is.
So we're I guess thirteen days removed since that happened,

(12:39):
and I'd say right now the coverage of this is
more so at this time on what we're learning about
those that lost their life, and it's just again I
keep saying this over and over, it's because it's what
keeps coming to mind for me, is just the everybody's
situation is different as far as they were in the area.

(13:01):
Maybe if it was because they were at work, or
maybe they just they frequent the business and they happen
to be there at that time. But seemingly from what
I from what I've picked up on just from reading
those that are sharing information, sharing good stories about the
victims who lost their lives. Is that it's just randomness
of being there at that time, and that's a scary thing.
I wouldn't recommend you spend a whole lot of your

(13:23):
life thinking about it, because that's no way to live, right,
I mean, if you're sitting around worried every moment about
what's going to happen to you, maybe you could say,
you're you're you know, you're keeping your head on a swivel.
You're you're trying to be safe, and that all makes sense.
But also you know, you can't think about it NonStop
because that would one consume you and also you wouldn't
be enjoying the things that are worth enjoying in life.

(13:43):
But yeah, just a tragic situation that'll be felt around
here for a long long time. And uh, I'm sure
we'll continue to hear more about those victims and some
stories about about their story specifically, and then of course
as we get more information in regards to the investigation,
that is going to be a very very lengthy process, right.

(14:04):
That's about a calendar year or longer as far as
the actual investigation being closed by the NTSB and then
giving us the official cause of what happened. That takes
a long time, but usually throughout you'll get updates that
they'll give you a better indication of what of what
we're looking at here. As far as the is the
root cause, I will say the algorithm is scary sometimes

(14:29):
as far as what it puts in front of me
on my device, on TikTok, on Instagram and on Facebook,
because I now see the videos of people who aren't
from Louisville that end up here. Rather they're driving through
the area on I sixty five right near the airport,
or if they are, you know, they just happen to

(14:50):
be staying here for a trip or something. And when
they get a visual and again i'm talking pre crash
two weeks ago, when people who aren't from here see
you're on sixty five, or on Friday night at the game,
you see how close those planes are to us. We're
used to it, we see it all the time. It's
now not at all something that really catches your attention.

(15:11):
If you're on sixty five and because of how massive
aircrafts are and how close it actually is to you,
you feel like you could reach up and grab that plane.
We're used to that. A lot of people aren't, so
you've been here before and you realize, oh, yeah, that's
the crash. That's crazy. I got out my phone and
I videoed how close the airplane was to us. So

(15:32):
there's somebody and I give them credit. I wish I
could actually give them credit for their channel because I
don't remember it. But somebody on TikTok had taken a
compilation of a bunch of different clips that show and
by the way, this is all pre crash, and it's
just some people from Louisville others that you were here
and got their phone out and they were like, wow,
do you guys see how close we are? And it's

(15:54):
because you know they're not from here, they don't see
it all the time. Among the many ake aways from
this tragic situation is that that happens every day here
and we don't bat an eye, and I don't. Necessarily,
I wouldn't be a fool to be like, I'm surprised
it hasn't happened more, because that would be that they'd
be ignorant of me to say, as if, like what
they're doing is super dangerous. I'd say it speaks to

(16:15):
being pretty safe, considering how many times it has not happened.
But overall, I mean, this could have been so much worse.
I mean, it really easily could have been so much worse.
But that's not to say that we aren't already dealing
with something that was tragic. I'm gonna, I don't know

(16:36):
if I'm gonna ever find a comfort spot there as
far as we're to land, because I can't get out
of my mind that any little thing here and there,
for no rhyme or reason, could have made this a
much more devastating situation. But when I say that, I
feel like there's such an uncomfortable ick internally, because I
feel like I'm acting as if it wasn't tragic. It

(16:56):
was tragic. So again we'll continue to to let that
linger for a long time, and again it'll be something
we remember forever around here. All right, we've got news
and traffic on the way. I'm sorry, we've got trafficking
weather on the way. News will be here at some point.
I know you're Itch and you want your John Shannon fixed.
He'll be with you at six o'clock. For now, you
get Rory O'Neil, so you're in luck. The news radio

(17:17):
eight forty whas it is News Radio eight forty whas
Coffee and Company with you, and we are fueled by
Thorntons and we're also joined now by Rory O'Neil. So, Rory,
there was a quiet line in the government reopening bill
that might blow up the hemp market and criminalize common
THHC products. Here in the state of Kentucky. This has
gotten a lot of attention because we have a lot

(17:39):
of folks that are in this business or they benefit
from the products that you can now get. What kind
of attention is this getting nationally as far as the radar,
because obviously hemp products have exploded in recent years, and
if in fact this becomes if they criminalize these products,
it's gonna impact a lot.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
Of people, all right, and a lot of fears are
associated with that. First of all, as you said, it's
divided your US Senate representatives, right, Mitch McConnell is for
this new ban, Ran Paul is saying hold on now.
But Kentucky, Texas, and Utah all have significant industries in hemp.
You know, when this was first past, it was supposed

(18:18):
to be to help develop hemp rope and hemp clothing
and stuff like that. But Obviously this quickly turned to
THHC and what can be extracted from some of these plants.

Speaker 3 (18:28):
And now used in popular things like gummies.

Speaker 4 (18:31):
This has turned into a thirty billion dollar industry very
very quickly, employing about three hundred thousand people across the country.

Speaker 3 (18:39):
And what they tucked in that bill last week says.

Speaker 4 (18:42):
That they would essentially ban anything with a THHD content
of more than point four milligrams, which a single gummy
is like two and a half to ten milligram, so
effectively bans everything.

Speaker 3 (18:53):
And now look, this doesn't take effect.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
For another year, so there's a lot of lobbying going
on to change things back to the way they were.

Speaker 3 (19:00):
So it's a wait and see.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
What has this industry done to make folks I guess
that are trying to influence Mitch McConnell to say we
got to get rid of it, because here locally there's
a lot of talk about, hey, he's trying to scratch
the back of his bourbon friends because they see him
as a as a real threat to their business. I
think both can collectively succeed in a big way here.
But what has been the real talking point of why

(19:22):
they believe this needs to happen.

Speaker 4 (19:24):
Well, that's one of the outgoing question it's one of
the continuing questions because essentially this seems to have come
out of nowhere. Right, Yeah, obviously we had government shut
down forty plus days. Broke right, they broke her this
deal the same way they snuck in that thing about
those senators get to sue because their phone records were
access right, they can all sue, but nobody would notice,

(19:46):
hoping no one would notice, and you know, some people noticed.
And now there are a lot of questions being raised.
But I think there's even the industry is saying, look,
we lost this round. Didn't really see this coming. But
they're hoping that they can essentially get some leeway in
the next year before this takes effect.

Speaker 1 (20:03):
Riyo o' neils our guest joining us Heerrea News Radio
eight forty whas a number of policy changes over the
weekend for President Trump, some tariffs being reversed, Ice moves
into Charlotte, he's at war with Miss Taylor Green. What
can you tell us about where we are with these
I mean, it's a lot going on with President Trump
right now.

Speaker 4 (20:21):
Well, and then we got the biggest reversal overnight now
he's all four, letting your release the Epstein files.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
I'm like, wait, where'd that come from? So the President
saying we've got nothing to hide.

Speaker 4 (20:31):
Go ahead, Republicans, you can vote to release the files
when you vote, probably tomorrow on that measure.

Speaker 3 (20:37):
So that's a big reversal. Obviously, the big falling out
with Marjorie Taylor Green was huge.

Speaker 4 (20:42):
She was back on the Sunday talk shows yesterday on
CNN saying, you know that this Epstein issue is dividing
her and Trump and that she still agrees with most
of his policies, but there seems to be a significant
falling out there.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
And then we also saw the tariff policy change.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
It was they said, oh, no, tariffs don't increase prices
for Americans, but they now say, in an effort to
reduce the prices to Americans, we're going to eliminate tariffs
on coffee, cocoa, bananas, certain beef products, and tomatoes and
other things as part of a reworked tariff program.

Speaker 1 (21:17):
So you're wise to bring up the Epstein situations. That
being of all the things going on, that's one that
has never gone away as far as just a talking
point in America, because it seems like, regardless of your affiliation,
you just want to know what really went on. You
want to see access to documents, you want, as they say, transparency.
I mean, one thing that is so obvious here that

(21:40):
I don't hear talked about enough. Maybe I'm not looking
in the right place, Rory, is that without really any
change as far as any information we have access to,
there have been drastically different approaches and stances from everybody involved,
including Trump, to where well, this is nothing, this is
a democratic hoax. And then I mean obviously that wasn't
the talking point a year ago or so. But I

(22:02):
get the sense that that this will I put it
this way, I have no expectation of us getting any
any real notable information because we just we haven't got
it yet, a we ever gonna get it. But then again, overnight,
as you mentioned, maybe that is the kicker that actually
gets people what they've been demanding for so long, which is, hey,
what the heck really happened here?

Speaker 3 (22:20):
Well?

Speaker 4 (22:20):
I think, but you know, here's my caution would be,
this is JFK and UFOs Okay that oh they're going
to release not quite everything, and maybe there are questions
and I don't know. So to the point you were
making of, we're never going to be satisfied. And look,
this is something we can all talk about in gossip
about and make jokes and memes about.

Speaker 3 (22:39):
I've seen plenty of them.

Speaker 4 (22:40):
But because it's easy to do, whereas, hey, let's solve
the healthcare crisis. That's not easy, you know, and it's
boring talk. And you know, that's why we gravitate towards

at least infiltrated to an extent because this is such
a talking point among people that really just the intrigue
of the unknown. Right, they may not even really care
what happened, but not because they just don't care about

really knowing what happened.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
