Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back since E three to sixty ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati Sports Station. Let's roll along because one of my
favorite things is in town wrestling a w WE talk
wrestling a lot on this show, and we've had John
Moxley on quite a few times on this show, but
we in for a treat today. We've got both John
Moxley and his wife Renate Piquette joining us right now,

(00:21):
both in studio, looking forward to two big nights of
AEW coming to Cincinnati at the Andrew Brady Music Center. Guys,
that's awesome to have you appreciate you stopping in.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, thanks for having us.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
You have Renette, you have a little bit of a
of a Bengal connection. Yeah, and the renee all day
going on. Schedules get a little bit tougher, but you
had time to a chance to spend some time around
the Cincinnati Bengals. Obviously a disappointing season here, but you
had a chance to spend time with T Higgins.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
I did. Yeah, my god, I love T Higgins. So
there's so many of the dudes when I would go
down and get to do these interviews with them, that
I would come home and like.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Say to John and Leck.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
I love these guys like I feel like T Higgins,
I'm like, it's I'm like, I don't know, buying lunch
or something, hang out with them, like just such a sweet,
genuine cool kid. He was so great, Jamar so great.
Teddy Carris is one of my favorite to get to
sit down with. Those guys are just fantastic. I don't
have you know, enough great things to say about them.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Have you been a Bengals fan obviously growing up in Cincinnati? John,
were you growing up as a Bengal fan?

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Oh? Yeah, and yeah. I went through the lean years
of the nineties.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
It was right when I moved back, actually that they
had the Super Bowl run, So that was that was surreal.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
You are you're essentially now carrying a torch with a
title because Cincinnati we're falling short of those with the
Bengals and the Reds and this year the Bearcats and Muskies.
It has to feel a lot of weight on your
back carrying a championship here in Cincinnati.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
I've been bringing world championships home for years. Man, you know, so.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Everyone else somebody's doing it at least, but hopefully, hopefully
I don't drop the ball on uh.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
On Wednesday, and UH don't want to lose in uh
in my hometown. That would be uh, that would suck.
So there's a lot of pressure.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
You're always have a bigger you have a target on
your back when you're the world champion, but being in
your you know, in hometown makes it uh kind of
puts that in uh even sharper contrast.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
You know, you get a lot of pressure to you know.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Want to leave everybody feeling all all bummed out that uh,
you know hometown guy lost. But then uh then again,
uh yeah, you know, powerhouse hobs. My opponent got a
lot of momentum, very scary, very uh popular individuals, So
who knows he might be uh the the crowd favorite.

(02:53):
You know, you never know, and if that's the case,
that's that's totally cool too. But it's uh up to
me to uh, you know, I'm walking out of that
walking out of the Brady Music Center with the World
championship or not walking out at all.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
It's one or the other. So that's that's not something
you're gonna want to miss.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
I think the first time we talked, you told the
story about uh coming back to Cincinnati having skyline before
the matches. Are you still running the risk of skyline
before the matches?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
That's risky.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
No, I don't think I did that because now I
can get it any every day practically right being so
it's not as a it's more readily available now. So
but you know that would be a good a good victory.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
What would be it would be like a better pre
game that would it be the spaghetti with the chili
or would it.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Be that like a coney. I don't think any of them.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
And there's mac and cheese.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Now, yeah, you get the mac and cheese.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
I don't think Yeah, I do think either of them
would be a good uh good idea really. I mean,
in your your life and health and physical well being
is on the line. And you know, if you anybody
listeners ever seen or gotten a good look at Powerhouse Hobs,
you know that's the kind of guy you're gonna want

(04:06):
to Just thinking about being in a physical education with him,
you know you're gonna have a hard time keeping anything down.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
So well, I don't think.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
Skyline right before a match is I've done it before,
and you know it can be done, but it is
not the greatest idea.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
You know, obviously it's a great card, and you also
have the first ever women's casino Gauntlet match. I know
you've voiced the lead in for this, this women's division
in aew what can you say about how much it's
improved and obviously big plans for twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Yeah, you know, as you see the depth continue to
evolve for the women. I mean you look at somebody
like Mariah May, who is currently the women's champion. Since
she has gained that title, she has just been on
the up and ups. I think that we are actually
so incredibly lucky to have her. She's a bit of
a dick, but she's very good at what she does
for her to hang on to that title, she's really
been standing on the neck of the entire division. But

(04:57):
you've got someone like Chris Statland or will and Gale
thunder Rosa, Julia Harts back in the mix now, Jamie Hayter.
We have all these women that are just they're growing
and learning and they're honing their craft like right before
our eyes. So to see the depth of the roster
the way that it is, and to now have their
first ever casino Gauntlet, I'm very excited for these ladies.

(05:19):
I mean We've seen them have certain street fights, death matches.
We know that these girls are not afraid to get dirty,
to get bloody, to beat the crap out of each other.
So I think that that's something that we're definitely going
to see on Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
What's the balance for you now of being very well
liked with everything you're doing and now having the bad
guy opposite of you here? How much of a balance is.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
That it is?

Speaker 3 (05:41):
It is a balance, you know. I think it's just
kind of picking and choosing my moments. You know. Unfortunately,
last week I did jump in the ring with Powerhouse
Hobbs when he won the Gauntlet match to have this
match with John on Wednesday, and received a little bit of,
you know, him talking subtrash about my husband and my face.
It's not the first time someone's done that. It won't

(06:01):
be the last. I can kind of take it with
a grain of salt. It is what it is. But yeah,
I mean the good news is if somebody wants to
talk trash to me, I've got John on the other
side of that. So it's really up to them to
decide how they want to play their cards.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
How do you guys play Obviously you guys have a daughter.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Now.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
I have a three year old, a four year old
at home, six month old at home, a three year
old and a four year old old, four year old
six month old.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Bless your wife.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
And our son. Our four year old is very into wrestling,
which I love because I've watched wrestling my whole life.
Go I went to events with my dad and I
remember sitting on his shoulder watching all these these superstars
come in. But now with my son, he's into it.
Daughter not so much yet, but now he's wanting to
do some of the moves he sees on TV two
our three year old daughter. So is there a balance,

(06:46):
is your guys?

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Little one?

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Is she taking it up already?

Speaker 3 (06:50):
She kicks the crap out of me a lot. She
was jumping on my well, she gives it to you
a bit too.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, likes to jump on things, but I think that's all. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
She does watch though, Like you know, the other night
I was able to watch Collision. I was the first
time I was able to stream it myself, watching it
on Max, which was awesome. But I had her up
maybe a little bit later than her bedtime, and we
turned it on as John was on TV talking and
it's so funny watching her watch him and her commentary
over the things that he's doing. I feel like I

(07:24):
need to release some other kind of like an alternate
commentary of her talking about these matches and asking all
these questions. It's actually really cool to watch her mind
wrap around what he's doing and what I'm doing.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
We are, We're fresh into twenty twenty five. I know, John,
a big year for you and for AW kind of
on the the prespice here of something big. What are
your expectations for not just yourself, but for AW as
a whole going into twenty twenty five.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
The audience is gonna I think the audience is going
to keep growing on HBO Max kind of already is
and just being a more exces And you know, people today,
you know, did you get on Netflix or Hbox or
Prime or what? You know these apps they get on
and you scroll through stuff and you go whatever holiday

(08:12):
baking challenge, whatever, click on this right, So a lot
of people are just starting to, uh, already just kind
of stumble upon what is all the wrestling?

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Like, oh cool?

Speaker 4 (08:22):
And now you can go back and watch a lot
of the library and you can kind of catch up
on the last five years of of AW and all
the cool stuff you know we've done and put together,
and see what it's all about, and see who these
guys are and the different flavor we bring and and
you know, we're gonna kind of be just kind of
building new wrestling fans slowly over.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Over time, and you know, starting starting now, you know,
already kind of.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
Started, and uh and I think, uh, really gonna just
dial in and kind of show the world, uh, you know,
who we are and what we can do, and what
we're about, and really start start building this thing.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
And uh, you know it feels like a frush pretty
in the year.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
It's unique now because you see, uh, the NFL and
college football and all these major sports are going to
streaming services. You got to get a Netflix or HBO
Max or Prime to watch some of the biggest playoff games.
And now to lean into that as well, you're opening
your door to this this brand new audience. Renee, how
do you describe AW. You've been around a lot of

(09:32):
different wrestling for for folks that are just getting into
it or new to it. What is it about AW
that is different that that is causing this to catch
on with?

Speaker 2 (09:40):
So many.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
You know, we say a lot at all of the
wrestling that this is where the best wrestle. And I
do think that that tagline so rings true. I mean,
when you look at our roster, you can't walk from
the locker room to catering without passing legends or people
that are like, man, we've heard of this person, can't
wait to see what this guy is going to do,
or different kind of matchup that you didn't anticipate that

(10:01):
we were going to be able to see. I feel
like this is the wrestler's wrestling show, and I think
that's the same for the fans. I think that for
fans that love professional wrestling, this is the place to
come and get that. And we have such incredible matches,
so many different opportunities of different styles of matches that
we're going to see, the different style of pay per

(10:23):
views that were able to offer. There's like the spirit
of what aw is that is really just about the
true fan, the true wrestler.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
We've had a bunch of folks that are curious the
Andrew J. Brady Music Center. I think believe this is
the first time wrestling is coming to the Music Center.
Have you had a chance to get in there to
see how the setup is going to be. I know
it's a big night. Christian Cage and Hook, the Women's
Casino Gauntlet match, Brian Cage, Kenny Omega obviously, John Moxley,
and Powerhouse Hobbs. Have you had a chance to see
how that's going to be set up and the excitement

(10:53):
that's building around the Music Center.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
I've seen pictures of it and how you know they
were going to lay it out, and when I first
heard about it, kind of saw a picture of how
they were looking at it. And I've never actually been
to that venue before. Uh you know, it all you know,
brand new, and uh you know all that whole waterfront
and all that is still still kind of trips me
out how all that stuff is so new and brand new,

(11:17):
and I'm like, I don't remember it like this, but uh,
it's gonna be really cool because uh, you know, just
a standard uh you know, cold new personality hockey arenas
all over the world that you know we've ran before,
and you know most events run uh you know they

(11:42):
The cool thing we're doing is kind of trying to
go to buildings with more personality. I can kind of
have a because the wrestling is about the atmosphere and
the energy that the fans bring. And uh, you know,
atmospheres are important and kind of the energy from the
wrestlers and the fans is kind of a symbiotic thing
and it kind of bounces off the walls and creates

(12:05):
this kind of swirl of intensity that you want to
be a part of. And so trying this out and
the Brady Center could be the start of a really
cool kind of relationship between all the wrestling in Cincinnati and.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
The Brady Music Center.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
And that's the thing, you know, talking about all this
you know, streaming and all this stuff and the way
people watch stuff now, but there's no substitute for for
being there live and in person and having a ticket
and being part of that. The closest thing to you know,
Roman Claddia Gladiator atmosphere you're ever going to see in

(12:42):
today's day in Asia and.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
You know, live television, World Championship on the line, anything
can happen.

Speaker 4 (12:51):
Uh, just the energy is going to be so high
and you know you have to be there live to
really experience it. It's a hard thing to put the words,
but you know that that's the way to see wrestling
is live and in person.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
And there's so much for everybody. I mean, you rattle
off to the matches that we're going to see on Wednesday,
you know, to have the return of Kenny Omega back
in the ring after you know, being sidelined for so long,
to see him, to see the women, to see what
John and Hobbes are going to do. There's yeah, you'd
really be hard pressed to go to a show and
not find something that you love.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
I'm looking forward to bringing my little one down And
you mentioned the the live aspect. I've had people that
aren't wrestling fans that you get him to come to
an event. It's like when I used to follow NASCAR.
You watch NASCAR on TV, it's great, watch it in person,
it's oh my gosh. And you get people that do
the same. And I'll leave you with this because I
think the very first time you and I ever spoke,
we talked about being from Cincinnati and wanting to bring

(13:46):
wrestling back to Cincinnati. The way that you remember it,
how important is it for you growing up here being
from Cincinnati and Renee you see it as well from John,
but bringing big time wrestling to Cincinnati, knowing Cincinnati is
passionate about the wrestling. It has to be special for
you to get these events back in your hometown.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Uh yeah, I mean I feel like it's always been
kind of an underserved market. I've said that a lot.
Uh and you know, with having a trying a new
venue out that nobody.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Else has ever run before, and running in a different way,
and uh, just kind of the different way we're doing
stuff with a w and you know, doing multiple nights
and kind of doing a stand in a place.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
You know, I feel like this is a thing we
can kind of build for.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
The future here and uh, you know, Wednesday Thursday is
kind of a first step, but uh, I feel like
it could be a really good relationship between this town
and and and this community and all the lead wrestling
and uh, you know that's something I want to continue
to you know, cultivate hopefully, So about.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
It getting started tomorrow and any any intro to return
to commentary at some point?

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Are you?

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Are you good where you're at right now?

Speaker 3 (15:03):
You know, sometimes I think about it. There's aspects of
it that I miss And obviously this is a far
different circumstance with AW versus what I had done previously,
So I think about it sometimes. I mean, I love
getting to do the interviews. I love getting to do
some more of the long form interviews or some of those,
like you know, really exclusive sit down things. I love

(15:24):
getting to do those. But yeah, every now and then
when I'm listening, I'm like, let me get a little
bit of the itch, a little bit.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Yeah, so we'll see.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
We can't thank you guys enough for stopping by, for
bringing wrestling back to Cincinnati. Allelite wrestling dot com. You
can get tickets for tomorrow night, get tickets for Thursday
as well. Maximum Carnage see John Moxley in Person's gonna
be pretty awesome. Can't thank you guys enough. Thanks for
stopping by, Thanks for your time, Thank you, Thank you man.
