Speaker 2 (00:28):
Let's go all right, it's Charlie Goldsmith of Cincinnati dot com,
joining us as he does at the top of our
number two each and every day. Charlie, what's going on?
How are you? How you guys doing Charlie, thank you
for the time. As always, Let's start not with the Bengals,
but what do you what do you want to see?
What are you looking for? It's it's almost seems meaningless

(00:49):
now they're eliminated from playoff contention. What are you watching
for over these last couple games for the Cincinnati Reds.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, it Tomorral victory type thing. But I feel like
in September they've played much cleaner baseball, and while there
just hasn't been as much attention around the Reds right now,
in general, spend a lot less time talking about base
running gas and routine plays that are getting botched. And
I think that kind of stuff is really important to establish.
How do you want to set that standard net expectation

(01:16):
and then maybe have just overall some more accountability with
that heading into next year. So it's been a solid
September and let's see if they can keep that going.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
You mentioned this on your social media account, but if
you happen to be an LSU sports fan, you have
an opportunity to come Sunday and watch Paul Skeen's pitch,
stay Monday and watch jayde Daniels and Joe Burrow on
Monday Night football. That's a pretty good weekend if you're
an LSU fan.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
A great weekend. I will say, though, I personally was
rooting for Steen Blouder on Saturday, but stem to Start
got pushed back one day. Of course, Steen Blower maybe
the greatest game in college baseball history in a college
World Series just a year ago, So we won't get that,
but we'll probably get Steams versus Green.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
On Sunday speaking of greatest games in history. Uh show
hey Otana yesterday? What the hell was that?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
The guy here's his ucl and is like, you know what,
I'm just gonna steal fifty bags this year, maybe one
of the most incredible. Like wait, as I've seen an
athlete respond to a particular piece of adversity. Like I
always say, the coolest thing an athlete can do is
just decide to do something and do it, like even

(02:26):
as simple as you know, to tie locally twenty twenty
one burrows like you know, I'm just gonna start throwing
the ball deeper or great example, Joey Vato is like,
I'm gonna become a home run a hit for now,
and it takes someone really special to do that. And
I mean to do fifty to fifty man, Like that's
one of the That's one of those moments. I'll always
remember watching that home run last night.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Will that ever be broken? Charlie?

Speaker 3 (02:50):
We're seeing power and speed combos get more and more common. Honestly,
if anyone's gonna break it, it might be Elie de la Cruz.
I bet no, I typically bet on stuff we've never
seen before not happening again. But I really mean it
if anyone can do it at Delly.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Let's talk a little bit about this Monday night football matchup,
and let's start with upfront. I talked about this a
little bit earlier today. Pro Football Focus has not grated
the Bengals up front very highly on an offensive line standpoint,
where do you I know it's a two game sample size,
and I know there's hopes of a Marius Mims coming back,
and we'll hope we'll get to those injuries in just

(03:25):
a second, but how do you evaluate what you've seen
up front through two weeks for the Bengals offensive line?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Chris Jones wrecked the game. It's what you expect, it's
what you've seen from him. It was still good enough
to win and will have to be better against Chris
Jones if they face him in January, or they should
be better, but it was good enough. I think the
most interesting conversation here is to have with Trent Brown.
That is such an interesting question to me. I went
back and watched his film twice from Kansas City, and

(03:52):
it's kind of a theme where he just has five
breakdowns a game, whether it's you know, with it on
a block or not finishing a play or there were
like four or five plays where Trent Brown's just standing
up while the play is going on and he's not
finishing it there. So what I'm seeing from Trent Brown
is workable enough to where you don't have to be him.

(04:13):
But I do what I would do is I would
rotate a Marius Mims in for a couple series, Maybe
use Washington, Carolina the Giants as a way to get
him more comfortable. Because watching that film on Sunday, I'm
pretty confident the best version of this team in January
has the Marius Mims, and of the Marius Mims who's
got some snaps under his belt.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Let's talk about a health standpoint and a lot happening
this week. Te Higgins return to practice, Chris Jenkins return
to practice, Von Bell left practice, Sheldon Rankins, bj Hill
being held out from a overall health standpoint, a Marius Mims.
Where do you feel confident in players returning for the
Cincinnati Bengals this week?

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Yeah, my expectation is that he's going to play that
as long as Jenkins gets through the week comfortable with
what he can do in a club whole play. Bj
Hill was on the rehab field yesterday. Sheldon Rankins wasn't,
So that makes me feel like DJ might be ahead
of Sheldon Rankings, but still, a big guy coming back
from a hamstring injury in a week seems more unlikely

(05:13):
than it would be likely. And I think the story
of the day is gonna be von and Vonn gonna
be on that practice field in thirty minutes. That's a
big one Jordan Battle now gives. He does give the
Bengals the best safety depth that they've had during this run.
Like I'd rather put him in there, have more confidence
than what he can do than say, you know, Riccardo
Allen or Mike Thomas. As much as Mike was a

(05:34):
great guy, they have better depth there. There was even
a scenario where Battle would have been a starter for
the Bengals this year, So he might get that chance
this week. But we've got to see where Vaughn's out
on the practice field in thirty minutes.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Charlie, let's talk about weapons for Joe Burrow outside of
the possibility of T Higgins returning. I know you talked
about Jermaine Barton, and this was a couple of weeks ago.
It felt like this guy was kind of buried on
the depth chart, and he makes a huge play in
that game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Talk about the
growth around Jermaine Burton over these last couple of weeks
to put himself in these positions.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
I had a really cool interview with him yesterday. Basically,
he was like, just give me a chance. It's he
specifically said, there are so many people out there that
want to see me fail, and I'm doing everything I
need to do to put myself in position to run
that route down the field and to make plays for
the first time in the NFL. He says, that's what
motivates him. And then he says providing for his mom

(06:28):
and for his sister is what motivates him. He said,
people think I don't know the playbook. People think I'm
not a smart guy. People think I'm not motivated, I'm disinterested.
He just kept saying, give me a chance. And that's
what the Bengals did. In practice last week. Burton told
me that he caught twelve full speed deep balls in
practice last week, six of them against defenses. I was

(06:51):
already saying they drafted Jermaine Burton specifically for the matchup
against the Chiefs and what he showed them to earn
the opportunity he got last week. That shows you something,
and I think they're going to keep giving him chances
in maybe just a deep ball specific role for now,
but just even the emotional maturity you're seeing from him
centrically the end of the preseason, where he said he
got kind of a wake up call as his staffs

(07:12):
and practice dwindled. That's what you want to see for
a rookie who has all the potential in the world.

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Charlie Joe Burrow said, he quote has gotten exponentially better
over the last three weeks. What do you think it
is that has changed about Burton over those last three
weeks to get him to this point.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Details extra time, he said, details with the playbook and
the scheme and the precision of his route running and
all that stuff. Stuff that wasn't there, stuff that he
hasn't figured out yet completely. But as Burrow said, you're
seeing exponential improvement. Burton talked a lot about his pre
practice routine, spending more time in the cold tub in
the weight room. He's talked about things like conversations he's

(07:52):
had with Key and Jamar who told him just stay patient,
we've been there. We both had flow starts to training
camps our rookie careers. He said that gave him the
confidence to kind of settle in. And I think the
most important thing, too, is what a great job Forroy
Walters is doing right now. Jermaine Burton went out of
his way several times to talk about Walters' ability to

(08:14):
kind of use humor to balance a relationship that I mean,
Troy has to be really hard on Jamaine. And Jermaine
said that, and he said that combination makes sure the
best receivers coach I've ever seen. So you're seeing all
of these tiny light bulbs start to click. And that
led to a moment in Canady. And I don't think
he's going to be a starter at any tice this season,

(08:35):
but even if he just catches two or three more
deep balls and most importantly, maybe makes a safety on
a couple routes, take a step off Jamar, take a
step off Key because they're thinking about that. That goes
a really long way for them.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Charlie, are we reading or making too much out of
the snap distribution at running back Chase Brown and the
snaps that he did get a chance to carry the
ball I thought looked very good. But for two games
now there's been a pretty big disparity in touches and
snaps Zach Moss and Chase Brown. How do you view
that now going forward?

Speaker 3 (09:04):
So I'll just say at first to start out and
make a clear Chase Brown should be getting more snaps
than Chase Brown will be getting more snaps now. Specifically,
the last week, damn pitcher kind of peeled back to curtain,
he said, especially against the defense like Kansas City spag
the lights you up with blitzes. He said, you kind
of needed to make a decision at the beginning of
the week who you were going to give the reps
in practice too. As you practice specifically the blitz pickups

(09:27):
and the pre staff recognition and all that kind of stuff,
there's not enough time in practice to get that two
steparate backs to kind of double the snaps and have
two running backs completely ready for the most complex flitz
package maybe in the league. So he said, you kind
of had to pick and probably next time, so oh,
leaning further into Chase Brown, Maybe not probably, but I

(09:49):
know they'd like to lean further into Chase Brown because
they'd like to see him develop as a blitz pick
up guy. They should be using Chase more. I think
they will, But even so, in a game with a
margin we're so thin, I do think that was a
real missed opportunity not getting chased a couple of the
carries that Dak Moss got last week.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Finally on the offensive side of the ball, Charlie, Joe
Burrow a nice bounce back against the Kansas City Chiefs,
but visibly frustrated, audibly frustrated after that game. All good
going forward in your opinion for Joe Burrow. All things
clear for takeoff here, I mean, the one.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
Thing left is fumbling. Joe Burrow typically an elite, really
the elite of the elite at protecting the football, and
I believe that's now three fumbles this year compared to
two and all of twenty twenty three. But Joe Burrow
checked all the boxes I needed to see physically in
training camp, and we've won. The problems I kept saying
were more about decisions than they were throws and both.

(10:43):
I'll bet on Joe Burrow making the right decisions. That's
a superpower, and that's what he did consistently against Kansas City.
The way he set up plays the way he fired
passes in there, even in the red zone. A couple
of those incompletions he fired in to the end zone
to some underrated plays that we won't remember because the
balls weren't caught or weren't completed or something broke down.

(11:04):
But Burrow was zipping the ball very effectively. And I think,
like you said, all systems.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Go for growth, Charlie. On the defensive side of the ball,
your main concern going into the season was the defensive line,
and now here we are going into Week three and
the defensive line has been decimated with injuries. Here comes
a Washington team who again rookie quarterback, but Jaydon Daniels
has shown a great ability to run the ball and
Brian Robinson last week was dominant in the running game

(11:31):
against the New York Giants. How concerned are you ahead
of Monday night for this Bengals front four to stop
the run, which they couldn't do against Kansas City and
they couldn't do against New England when they needed to.
Where's that level of concern for you Monday?

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yeah? Well, one of the rules in life is follow
the money, and the Bengals went out and got Lawrence Guy,
and well, he's not going to be a big name
or anything like that. He was the best player available.
He played a lot of football in this league. The
Bengals never ever go out and get the Lawrence guy
on the market whenever they've had and they've had plenty
of positions of need pop up, like in twenty twenty

(12:06):
one they were decimated at tight end and they brought
in Scotty Washington and there was a chance he almost
played in the Super Bowl, you know, like that, they
got that curl when they needed an o's tackle. I
remember once they needed another corner and they brought in
John Brandon a couple of years ago, not the basketball coach,
for the corner from a small school like these are
the types of guys the Bengals usually bring in. So

(12:27):
the fact that the Bengals went out, they got the
best player available and they spent for it, that shows
me the concern level of defensive tackle right now. And
I guess no one really knows what to expect from
Lawrence Guy, a guy who wasn't a part of training camp.
All but on not all bet on, but they're what
they're betting on is the fact that you know, he's
an ultimate culture guy who did literally everything right. He

(12:50):
was kind of the tight caris of that Patriots defensive line.
So that's kind of the skills that you'll bet on
bringing a guy in who wasn't in camp. But it's
still not going to be pretty. And the one thing
maybe or they will certainly do this week is I mean,
the Bengals didn't have light boxes against Kansas City. They
almost had empty boxes, and you're going to be able

(13:10):
to allocate more resources to stop the run having extra
guys in the box this week, and that'll help Charlie.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Had not the game ended the way it did, we
would be talking for a long time about the Trey
Hendrickson game. Rarely can you see one player have an
impact on a game like Trey Hendrickson did against the
Chiefs side. Can you even put into words? I still
feel like nationally how he's underappreciated, maybe underrated, But can
you put into words how good Trey Hendrickson is.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
I feel like that's the thing, right, the underrated, the underappreciated.
It felt like that was almost as much of a
part of the trade request he had in April as anything.
He understands the Bengals understand that the list is like
what Parsons, Bosa, Garrett, who would be at the top
of that list, and then like you get to Trey
Hendrickson pretty quickly in that range, you know, on the

(13:58):
fourth through eight range of your best edge rushers in
the NFL. And for some reason, maybe it's because he doesn't,
you know, do much on social media. He doesn't do
a lot of interviews. He's not the most you know,
he doesn't have the mile like Miles Garrett showed up
in a Halloween costume that one time and posted a
photo of Joe Burrows great Tray. Doesn't do any of that.
That leads to his name being less recognized, less of

(14:21):
a public figure. But I mean, even go back to
the Super Bowl, the plays he made there, you know,
the ANFC title game in twenty twenty one, what he
was able to do on three man rushes on three
man yeah, when they drop eight. I mean that got
the Bengals the Super Bowl. Like time and time again,
He's that type of player that defenses have to account
for on every snap. They fear on every snap. His

(14:43):
get off at the line of scrimmages maybe one of
the very best in the NFL the way he does that,
and then his power is second to none as well.
So I mean Trey's an unbelievable player who doesn't get
that recognition.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Both linebackers talk tackling at a high clip. You mentioned
the conversation about Von Bell and what that's gonna like
come Monday. Let me wrap with this. Cam Taylor Brett
kind of called a shot a little bit against save
You're worthy in the Kansas City Chiefs has one of
the most unbelievable interceptions you'll ever see called a shot
a little bit here about Cliff Kingsbury's offense and Jayden
Daniels and how the system is playing out. Do you

(15:15):
have any issue with Cam Taylor Brett as good of
a player he is in kind of giving this bulletin
board material.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Well, first of all, say that the Bengals had a
college offense in twenty twenty and there wasn't anything wrong
with that. I actually, I think a trend the Bengals
started is running the college offenses to help rookie quarterbacks
get more comfortable and feel more comfortable with the scheme
they run. Right away, Cam's not to stir the pot guy,
He's just a. I mean, he's a juice guy. He's juice,

(15:44):
and I think this is just a part of the
infestious personality that's made him such a big presence. I
took more issue with this toments about Worthy. Zach took
more issue with this comments about Worthy, But I mean
Cam is also a guy who he backs it up
with as much use as anyone I've seen, just with
the terms of the way he rises to a moment.

(16:06):
I mean, ever since he was a rookie and he
was getting picked on in December, then the way he
elevated to the moment in January as the Bengals made
that run to the postseason, and the fact that his
personality never changed through all that, I mean, that's Cam
Taylor Britt. So again, maybe the Worthy comment is the
one you have more of a problem with. But aside
F nine, he's just going to be Camp Taylor Britt.
And a big part of being Cam Taylor Britt too

(16:28):
is making plays.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
I hate the term, but it is prevalent for Monday
as Monday, I know only Game three. Is it a
must win in your opinion?

Speaker 3 (16:37):
Yeah, Like the thing the Bengals missed with the Chiefs
game was that was the kind of win that could
have taken them through January. Like it's funny now, like
I bet this season we'll still be talking about, Hey,
remember what the Bengals did against San Francisco last year.
That shows what they're capable. And you know, the further
we get removed from that, the kind of more hallow,
that Hollo that becomes well well went over the Chiefs

(16:58):
in Week two would have given them all confidence they
needed for the rest of the season. So you just
got to have that moment. You've got to be one
of the worst teams in football, especially a team that
I mean the Bengals have guys on the practice squad
who might be playing in the tea in the Commander's
secondary right now. It's a type of moment. I think
it's a great chance to kind of get rid of

(17:19):
the frustration that Jamar Case is feeling by feeding him
and targeting him and him having that type of big
game could let everyone take a deep breath. A win
would let everyone take a deep breath. There's a lot
they can gain, and of course you got to get
the win as well.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
Charlie.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
The victory bells back in Clifton. What do you see.
What do you need to see from the Bearcats tomorrow
to get a big twelve opener victory and finally Scott
Sadderfield's first home win against an FBS opponent at Nippert Stadium.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
Here's my question, So Souderfield will say it until he's
blue in the face, This Houston defense is the top
Tioteam scoring defense, and specifically, all the talks abit about
their linebacker and it's been about their safety. While we're
now three four weeks into saying get Joe r of
the ball, got to get Joe error of the ball.
And even though that's the strength of a Houston defense,
that might be the strength of the Bearcats offense as

(18:09):
good as Corey Kenner is, just the potential he brings
to the table. Are they able to go strength against
strength this week? Or are they still going to try
to work around and have some roll like the offense's head.
Do they finally try to get out to the aggressive
and feature the best player.

Speaker 2 (18:24):
