our number three as you just heard right there, thanks
to our friends at Penn Station. The same way we
do each and every Friday on the Friday Football Frenzy.
Whether I'm here or not, our guy Tommy's always here,
Tom Glair to the voice of FC Cincinnati, joining us
right now. It's playoff time, Tommy, Tommy, Tommy, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Tony, Tony, Tony. Happy Friday, Thrilled to get to New
York City tonight, Fire it up tomorrow late afternoon.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Game two.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Life is good. We got to Halloween. I mean, what
more could you ask for? Right now, my friend I mean.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
In in the in the in the gletter household. When
does Christmas season now start? Are you guys waiting until
the Thanksgiving holiday?
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Okay, after Thanksgiving? I'm not. I'm not like the fights
putting it up around Labor Day. You know, you have
Christmas freez.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
I didn't get a sleep last night.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
You But but it's not, it's not my deal. Okay,
day day after Thanksgiving the lights will start going up outside.
I mean, I really up my game last year with
a lot of PVC.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Pipe and steaks and all this stuff. I had a
whole tunnel leading up to the house lights.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
I mean you you could you could probably see my
house from your house.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
If you went up on the roof or something.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
You could see the glow from my house with all
the lights I put out there last year. So my
electric bill will be going up, but not until I
get through my turkey and stuffing and all those fixings
in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
What did the children dress up as last night? And
did Anny come close to Luciano Acosta's costume?
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Uh? No, that Maridona was pretty special.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
My younger son went as Denzel Ward and that was
pretty good.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
That was that was very solid. And then my older
son is in that window where you're maybe too old
against okay, older you know, it's starting to get a
little awkward.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Some people will your age want to go trigger treating,
some don't.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
He went his hot Cheetos. Okay, it was. It was solid.
It was.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
It was a solid effort, probably the last one for
my older son. But but yeah, man, they brought home
a lot of candies. I'm I'm glad to be getting
out of town because I don't need all that in
my life.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
Let's talk about sugar.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Lets.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Let's talk about solid efforts. Let's talk about what f
C Cincinnati was able to do. Because we talked about
this team kind of limping into the MLS playoffs, but
once you get in, everything is washed away and you
got to try to play your best soccer for a
stretch that can get you to to an MLS Cup.
And no matter how it was done, f C Cincinnati
took a positive step forward with a one nail victory
(02:57):
over New York City FC. How did they do it?
On Monday? Temmy Well, I.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Thought an all around better team performance. They came out
with good energy. I think they built upon what they
did in Philadelphia, you saw the continuity and the starting
eleven for the first time this year, a repeat starting
eleven for Pat Noonan, so that was big.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
And I think their press was good when when they
decided to press New York.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
City and they just really didn't give them chances to
get shots off. I mean, what were there the finals
at twenty two to six I think was the final
number in shots, So they didn't really give New York
City many opportunities to score.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
So that probably had another goal or.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Too probably U You know, there was a couple in
the second half that would have been an insurance go
and pushed it to two nail that really felt like
sure things.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
I didn't find the back on that, but and then
they won one nil.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
It was one of those classic, like Pat noon In
led efforts that we've seen from this team the past
three years since he took over.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
You know.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Not great for the heart because a couple of chances
late for New York City of the.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Goal would have tied it.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
But they survive and they get that really really important win.
Now going into this game tomorrow at City Field, and no,
I thought I thought the back line was very good.
I thought the pressure was good from the guys up front,
and and you know, they didn't really give New York
City the inch very often and that was important. And
you know, they can carry that momentum into tomorrow, then
(04:22):
they should be in a really good spot with some
rest coming up before they get ready for the next round.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
You mentioned the momentum. How important is putting that zero
on the board from a defensive standpoint when you get
into the MLS playoffs. Obviously a lot going on, the
pressure is a little bit higher, But to put a
zero up I would imagine defensively would give you a
little bit of momentum and confidence going forward.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Oh yeah, I think absolutely.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
You know, the team only saw what seven clean sheets
during the regular season and thirty four games, which kind
of down. But but again you have to consider that,
you know, And and the seventh for Roman, I think
six came probably in the first half of the season,
just one in the back half of the season, but
a couple of really important defenders in front of him,
and that hurt. So no, I think that's huge. I
(05:05):
think if you can build upon that, then then obviously
you're putting yourself in. If you're putting if you're putting
up a clean sheet that at the very worst, you're
putting yourself into a punt on a kick shootout, and
I think with the way this attack is built, then
you feel pretty good about your opportunity to win. So
I think that group should have a lot of confidence,
and maybe the most confidence the defensive group that is
that they've had since they've all kind of come together
(05:27):
because Chadozio Waseim is new starting on the back line,
and teenage Dab's only been in since September and been
out on international duty a couple of times in that window,
you know, and DeAndre came in this year, Emil Sad
came in this year, so yeah, you got a lot
of guys playing back here. Miles Robinson was new this year,
so you know, a lot of changes on the back line.
When you talk about that group as a five in
(05:47):
front of Roman Celitano, and I think they've done really well.
I thought Teenager Dab made some really nice plays. You know,
if you want to be critical, there's probably a couple
times where you wish you would have done a lot
a little better, But overall, I thought it was his
best game in Orange and Blue. So I think there's
a lot of positives there, and you're absolutely right. Confidence
is the name of the game right now. And if
this group is confident and then plays that way, then
(06:08):
I think good things can happen.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
You kind of alluded to it there at the start.
How important is one to take the pressure off what
would be a Game three? But from a rest standpoint,
how important does tomorrow night become to go to City Field,
close this out, advance in the playoffs, and give yourself
a little bit of rest as well, you know.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
And the rest part is interesting, And I was just
talking to somebody about it here before we get ready
to take off for New York City. And the rest
is so tricky because excuse me, you know, they it's it, say,
excusins only win tomorrow. They will not play again for
twenty days ish, maybe three weeks.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
You know, until they play.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
It'll be that that weekend before Thanksgiving because Game three
games from next weekend, and then there's an international break
the weekend after that. So you know, it's all about
momentum and getting hot. So let's say since I they
play a perfect game and win two nail three nails
up along those lines, and you're like, man, they're hot.
You almost wanted to play the next week again, and
and that's it for twenty days. Last year of she
since had he won the first two games against Red
(07:09):
Bulls and then sat for three weeks, and you know,
had had.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
A tough game at Philadelphit. I don't think that was
all the break.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
There's other reasons, right, missing a couple of guys in
that game, and then it took a late game winner
from yours in Monscarra to win it. So I wouldn't
say they lost momentum there. But you wonder you worry
about that, I think a little bit. And you know,
it's it's like those summer breaks where they're off for
twenty days and you get kind of sick of practicing
against each other, right, and there's there's nothing you could
do about that.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
You can't bring another team to scrimmage.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
So you know, that's that I think is the tricky
part of managing this break. But I think, yeah, you
don't want to come home and have a game three
with the pressure, you know, all the pressures on New
York City in this one, because it's an elimination game.
They have to win or their season is over. Seasons
they don't, So, you know, I think that's reflective of
this whole playoff situation for the Orange and Blue, because you know,
(08:01):
in Toy twenty two, you make the playoffs the first
time ever, you're happy to be there.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
You're kind of playing with house money. Right.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Last year year the number one seed, I think there's
all the pressure in the world to succeed and make
MLS Cup, and they were obviously very close to making
that happen. Now you're the three seed, there's not quite
as much pressure. You you know, potentially on the road
for much of the playoffs. So it's it's a different
situation this year than the previous two. And I think
if ver season's nangees go in and stick to their
(08:27):
game plan and you know, manage the conditions with a
smaller pitch well and knowing that New York City's gonna
throw everything at them, they got to be ready to pounce.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
They've got to be ready to take advantage when they
can go the other way.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
When New York City is, you know, pushing really hard
to try to get a goal and maybe there's a
turnover or a deflection. They got to be ready to
go and finish those opportunities. If they do that, they
can set themselves up for success.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
That was gonna be my follow up when you look
at expectations, because it is they enter this MLS postseason
much definitely than they did last year. What are the
expectations of where? Where is the threshold? What do you
need to get to to consider a success? We always
talk about that from the landscape of a season standpoint,
and this season has had so many ups and downs
(09:13):
and where it's been. How do you view that?
Speaker 4 (09:15):
What? What?
Speaker 2 (09:16):
What does this team need to accomplish to consider this
another successful season for FC Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
I mean, I think Frankly and Chris Albright has called
this general managers, you know, he's referred to this as
a championship window for the club based on the talent
and the players they have in and you know, the
players they brought in, and so I think anything less
of MLS Cup is going to be disappointing for this team.
There's no oh, well these are conference final would be
great again, Well yeah, it'd be great, but that's not
(09:43):
the goal.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
The goal is to win MLS Cup.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
So I think, you know, Frankly, that anything short of
that will be pretty disappointing for this group that they
expect to play into December and hopefully have a big
party and a celebration, you know after that that game
on that Saturday in December, you know when they're going
to play a team from the Western Conference, hopefully.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
So I think there has to be the goal in
the expectation.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
I think from the beginning that Chris and Pat have
said that the goal is to make the playoffs and
then to win championships and win trophies, a big hardware
here to Cincinnata did that last year with the supporter shield,
and they've been very clear about their intentions.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
So one win down, they got to win four more.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
And they can take care of business by checking one
of those boxes tomorrow in New York City.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
I know for the team they are playing with the
blinders on how much do you allow yourself to look
what's going on? Obviously and upset in round one in Columbus.
The New York City Red Bulls go in to Columbus
and win. Obviously, that sets up a match Sunday where
the Red Bulls can close it out. How much are
you allowing yourself to peek ahead a little bit as
to what's going on in the rest of the MLS playoffs.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
Completely and entirely. I'm allowed to do that.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
I mean, let's be honest, like, you know, the coaches
aren't looking ahead to it where they're worried about it,
but they're definitely watching them those games, and the players
are probably watching those games as well, right, And I
would imagine no matter what happens on Saturdays, you know,
maybe not everybody, but but people are going to watch
that Columbus New York game to know what's going on
and to continue to get ready for one of those opponents,
(11:16):
you know, whether they're getting ready for a Game three
or they've already advanced. You know, yeah, I think it's
completely fair to keep an eye on it. And you know,
Karen and I didn't watch together, but we were texting each
other throughout the second half of that match, and Carlos
Cornell made some big saves and absolutely because you know
last year, you knew that after that one road game
(11:38):
to Red Bulls, every Cincinnati were at home the rest
of the way. There was no other you know, there's
nothing else to talk about. They were home that easy
because you're the supportership winners. After Miami situation right now,
they got to play in Atlanta with seventy thousand people there,
but then they're gonna be home if they win, and
you know, so they.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
They know that, we don't know that, So sure everybody
should be rooting for Bulls.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
You know, you don't want to see hell was Real
again in the playoffs because he would be in Columbus.
That's a very difficult match. Can I fe some time
to go there and win? Absolutely, but you must rather
see Red Bulls. A TQL say they would be able
to stay home for the weekend.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
So yeah, the.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Pressures on Columbus in that game too, you know, one
hundred percent. And now I think, uh, you know, definitely
a lot of peak because that's that's fine, But I
think you know, they're not gonna concern.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Themselves with it. But if they're sitting on the couch
and the.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Game's on, I think, you know, people are definitely gonna
be watching and aware of what's going on.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
How much are you aware of what's going on in Cleveland?
Are you shutting the door yet or did Jameis Winston
ignite something that the Browns are still alive?
Speaker 4 (12:40):
Five and oh, unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Five and oh for first Scientists twenty sixteen unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Which I believe was a champion. You know, that's fine, it's.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
Just never stopped for you. It's always winning.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Oh the Cleveland Browns jamis yes, fantastic, right, he's been
he's been amazing, uh in his one game. But let's
see what happens. Right to defeat the Ravens was big.
I think the division is gonna kind of eat themselves.
I do nort know how the Steelers continue to win.
It's unbelievable, but yeah, no, I think that it's you know,
(13:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
They're kind of just crossroads, right, They're trying to decide.
I think if they're gonna.
Speaker 3 (13:18):
Make more trades, if there's gonna be more players out
and trying to pick up some more draft assets. But
the way jamis played, I think you have to see
what happens against the Chargers and if they win again, Yeah,
then all of a sudden, you know, Nick Chubb's getting
healthier and more game fit. Now all of a sudden,
people are like, here we go. You know, now you're
kind of in the mixer again for the playoffs, which
is insane, and who would I funk it. But let's
(13:39):
let's see how game two goes.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
I love it, uh, Tommy, always appreciative of your time.
Enjoy the trip to City Field, bring home a win advance,
and enjoy that rest that would accompany that as well.
We always appreciate your time and look forward to talking
again next week.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Oh yeah, I appreciate you guys always, and look forward
to chatting next week, hopefully it's with.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Conference in my final ticket? Areto now now? Real quick?
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Before I do, let you go? When you when we
talk about round one of the playoffs, how much heat
are you looking to bring on the road? From a
feed standpoint, I mean, are you are you rolling everything?
Are you saving it a little bit?
Speaker 4 (14:13):
Is it a little bit? Can? Can I do a
little bit of both? Sure?
Speaker 3 (14:15):
I mean I'm bringing heat because I mean there's no
other option.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
But I had to kind of.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
Be cautious because there's a lot of walking to be
done at City Field.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Yeah that's fair. I kind of have to balance the
comfort with the heat. But I'll send you a picture,
will we get.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Rot Tommy, always appreciate your time, man, We look forward
to listening a long.
Speaker 4 (14:36):
Cheers, boys, appreciate you there, he is.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
That's Tom Galtter. This is the start of our three.
We got plenty more still to go on the Friday
football frenzy. Thanks to Penn Station on the home of
the Bengals, ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station now
