It's the Lockdown Podcast Network, yourteam every Day. Joe Burrow adjust the
media for the first time, wellin a long time. He spoke on
his contract extension, on what's goingon with Jonah Williams, and more.
We'll break down the Bengals franchise quarterbackscomments. You are Locked On Bengals,
(00:24):
your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast, partof the Lockdown Podcast Network, Your team
every day Bengals fans, and welcometo another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
(00:46):
I'm your host, Jake Letsco. He's your host, James Rapine.
We're part of the Lockdown Podcast Networkand you can subscribe to this podcast on
YouTube or anywhere you get your podcastsfor daily coverage of your Cincinnati Bengals and
that includes Joe Burrow, who, somehow, James, despite our normal tendencies
to talk about him whenever we can, the face of the Bengals franchise,
(01:07):
one of the faces of the NFL, Joe Burrow, We've managed to not
talk about him very much in thelast month. Maybe focus on the draft
that's obviously not a very quarterback heavytopic, despite them adding some weapons or
protection for him, that sort ofthing. But when Joe Burrow speaks,
we obviously listen and listening closely, and James, you were obviously there.
(01:30):
You had the opportunity to ask afew of those questions and hear him in
person. And a lot of reallyinteresting tidbits in the Joe Burrow pressor none
more interesting, I would say, than the contract extension comments. And I
think that's where we start, nodoubt, because that's the question sort of
(01:51):
looming over the franchise, looming overthe off season, as much as we
could discuss t Higgins or Jamar Chaseor the offseason editions and they're big Jonah
Williams, which we will talk aboutthose things. The draft, That entire
draft class of twenty twenty three isnot worth what that Joe Burrow contract extension
is value wise in reality or tothis franchise. And I think that that's
(02:15):
obviously where we start in Joe Burrowscomments interesting because he didn't just pass the
buck and give the generic that's upto my agent. I'm leaving, letting
my agent handle that we're not goingto negotiate publicly. He could have said
that and just been done, andinstead he acknowledged that he was involved in
(02:36):
contract talks instead, he said, quote, I'm pretty clear on what I
want in the contract and what Ithink is best for myself and the team.
We are on the road to makingthat happen, and I think that
that's encouraging. Encouraging for about fiftythousand reasons, not just the fact that
(02:57):
this deal needs to get done forthe anchise and for him and all of
those things, but obviously all ofthe other deals that could potentially fall in
line afterwards. So I think Burrowis aware of his power and in to
get paid in once long term security. And at the same time, this
(03:19):
whether it's realistic or not, Jakeis going to open up the door now
to the narrative of Joe Burrow mightstructure that very team friendly, go the
Mahomes style, even though it soundslike Mahomes is going to renegotiate his deal
this offseason or maybe take a littlebit of a hometown discount to keep the
band together. Like that chatter whichhad kind of gone away a bit,
(03:40):
I think that's going to come backnow after these comments. Yeah, we'll
see. I'm very interested to seeif that actually happens, right, because
there's not much of a precedent inthe NFL for superstar quarterbacks at the top
of their position taking a clear discountlike even Homes deal. At the time,
while it was seen as team friendly, it was also seen as holy
(04:08):
crap, that's a lot of moneyten years. Wow, what a commitment.
And I mean it was market settingat the time. Listen, not
set the market at the time.Yes it was, but it was looking
at like the cap hits and everythinglike that. The structure, it was
very clear that he did them afavor, even even in the moment.
(04:29):
But you're right, it was aheck of a lot of money. Yeah,
it was still a good contract fromHomes at the time. And then
since then, we've talked about onthis podcast how there have been a number
of really poor from the owner's perspectivequarterback deals recently, Russell Wilson one of
those, Kyler Murray one of those. Certainly just Shahn Watson one of those.
(04:50):
Like all of these contracts that havehappened recently for quarterbacks that have really
accelerated the quarterback market. And youknow, maybe this is just normal inflation,
but prior to that, I Idon't think we were seeing these massive
jumps to the point where you knowthe Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes deals down
in retrospect book fantastic for those teams. And it's always a case right,
(05:12):
like there's always some inflation, butthe degree of that inflation. And I
could be wrong about this, Thisis this is an intuition thing rather than
I've done the math thing. Feelslike to me it's it's been a greater
degree of inflation in recent years. So given that that's already happened, are
we saying that Burrow's not going toreset the market because that would be shocking.
(05:32):
And so if it's just a structurething, then okay, sure,
but you'd be surprised, right, wouldn't you be surprised if Burrows at least
like per year didn't set the marketat the quarterback position. It's going to
start with a five. I wouldbe shocked if it didn't. And so
yeah, why wouldn't it reset it? I agree with you. I think
(05:53):
I think team friendly in Joe Burrowmean structure that bad boy, so we
can keep your friends around. Andoutside of that, I don't know how
much is there in just falling inline with that. He did say whenever
you have guys on the team thatneed to be paid. That's always on
your mind. When asked essentially aboutte Higgins, Jamar Chase, etc.
(06:15):
He said, you want that tobe a focal point, and so we're
working to make that happen. Andso I do wonder because Joe Burrow is
unique. There's a reason he's beenable to completely flip not just the franchise
on its head, but the entirecity of Cincinnati. And you mentioned it
NFL wise, he's one of thebiggest stars in the game. He's completely
(06:35):
changed that franchise, and so maybehe does. Maybe he finds a way
to be the point man for allthree deals and it just comes together and
works. That's just unprecedented. Ithink that's fair to say unprecedented, because
guys have egos, right, evenyou don't become Joe Burrow without an ego,
(06:57):
Jamar Chase, t Higgins without anego as well else as egos agents,
and so to get everything to fallin line to where a team friendly
structure will work, I think that'sthat's it's far fetched on the surface,
but I wouldn't put it past Burrow. Much like being down twenty one three
(07:18):
in an AFC title game against whatmany believed what it was, the best
team on the planet and he gotit done then, or insert the number
of other times he's you know, caught us off guard and surprised us,
or maybe it's not a surprise anymore. I'm not going to be surprised if
he finds a way to make thiswork. That said, I agree with
you, I think that's going toreset the market. But that doesn't mean
(07:40):
he can't structure it a certain wayand work on the years in work hand
in hand. And that's the partof it that I think is interesting too.
Is it sounds like both sides thinksomething's going to get done and when
you have that and it's just kindof a matter of when not if you
can really find ways to negotiate andmake sure it's the best for both sides.
(08:01):
I think it's absolutely a whennot IfI am with you there like that,
that's there's no if at all.It's it's just a when, and
it's what was it? What isit going to look like? Is it
going to be the four year fiveyear deal variety? Where they being Burrows
(08:22):
Camp want to see, you know, what's the future of inflation? Because
his future is so secure. Youknow, some of these other quarterbacks have
gotten big deals. Jalen Hurts similarhad had one major year of success,
lost the Super Bowl fifty one milliona year. Joe Burrow lost the Super
Bowl AFC Championship game in back toback years earlier in his contract than Jalen
(08:45):
Hurts, although they are the sameage. No, Burrows actually older Um
by two years, but it's it'shard to see him not eclipsing that number,
right, So it'll be interesting tosee what kind of model they follow,
where the guarantees are, how theymanaged to guarantees, how they manage
the pro ration over time. Wetalked with Andre Parratta about this with his
(09:07):
projected Burrow contract. That was anepisode way back in the winter if you
want to go find that one wherewe talked with Andre and broke down the
different contract possibilities and what he projectedas a good contract idea for Burrow.
And this was before some of theseother quarterback deals happened, so we probably
wouldn't need to adjust it now sincesome other quarterback deals have come down since
then. But you want to knowa fun fact, James Go currently quarterbacks
(09:33):
in the NFL that have a higherper year deal than Joe Burrow by virtue
of the rookie wage scale and inflation. CJ. Strout, Trevor Lawrence,
Bryce Young. That's wild. That'swild, that wage scale stuff. You
know, even the second pick huhyeah. Just a few years later,
(09:54):
the second pick still gets it.Yeah, And by the way, good
for them. And that's the otherpart of this. He does have money,
but he's about to get a wholelot more money. And I wouldn't
put it past him, Jake.I wouldn't put it past him to take
this weird team friendly deal where peopleare like what Cia who represents him,
like what what are you talking about? Joe, You're the biggest quarterback in
(10:16):
the sport you're going to be duringthis contract. And he's like, Hey,
this is what we're doing, right, So he's involved. I think
that's very good news. If you'rein camp, keep the band together.
And he's got to be in campkeep the band together, right, he's
highly incent of us to do that. Well. I would much rather throw
(10:37):
to the Bengals receivers than any othergroup that they're going to see, at
least in the AFC. I'm noteven thinking about NFC, but at least
in the AFC, I don't thinkthere's a contending team that's in that mix.
So yeah, I think that ifyou're Joe Burrow, you're locked and
loaded and you feel good about yourselfgoing into against any of these these top
(10:58):
playoff teams wise, So let's continuethis conversation. More takeaways from Joe Burrow.
It's really the only time I thinkwe're going to hear from him this
offseason before training camp starts. Sothere's plenty to dissect and we will do
all of that coming up next, including well, the shape Joe Burrow is
in, and that's why today's showit's brought to you by Built Bar.
(11:18):
And I might have snuck Joe Burrowat Built Bar in the Bengals locker room.
I can't confirm that, but I'mnot going to deny it either,
and he certainly is in great shape. I even joke with him about lazy
Joe Burrow. He said, hesaid, obviously he's been working out,
you could see it. But Iasked him. I was like, you
haven't been working out, huh.And so whether you're working out a ton,
(11:39):
whether you're not, whether you're justtrying to get in better shape,
or you need that post workout proteinpunch. Built bars are perfect for you,
and you can check him out rightnow at built dot com, Built
dot Com. If you want tolook at him in stores, go to
your local Walmart, your local Sam'sClub and you can check them out there.
They're covered in one hundred percent realdark chocolate, high protein, low
(12:01):
sugar, low calories, perfect foryou. Joe Burrow, Dax Hill,
insert another player on the Bengals thatis in better shape today than they were
when the season ended, and soget yours at Built dot Com, Sam's
Club and Walmart. There's no offseasonfor true NFL fans. Listen every day

YouTube and wherever you listen to podcasts. Part of the Lockdown Podcast network your
team every day. I want totalk about the kind of shape Joe Burrow
(12:45):
is in. He did set theInternet on fire yesterday. Head Banjoe Burrow
was. It's got to be oneof the biggest engagement things I've seen on
Bengals Twitter. Yeah, from everysingle day, the graphic in the last
what since since the season ended, probably, I mean it was everywhere everywhere,
(13:09):
and you know, even and hesees it. I know, he
might act like he knows it.He sees it, and so he put
out there the first day of schoolof Vibes with a couple more pictures that
absolutely I think the Internet was alreadyon fire and then it burned down and
they had to rebuild it. Goodthing they rebuilt it quickly. But you're
right, man, he but that'sthe point, right like that, That's
(13:31):
the point of this whole thing iswhat a guy of that magnitude of that
start with that star power in thesocial media era and he by far is
the most popular Bengal period, likenot just in this decade or this no,
no, no, no period likethat. I don't think there's ever
been a time now you could say, well it's because of social media and
(13:54):
all of those things. That's fine, still most popular. But the point
is, is some one with thatstar power that means that much to a
franchise going to take a team friendlydeal or team friendly discount or whatever you
want to say, hometown discount. That's a major question because he knows the
(14:15):
power that he wields, and Iguarantee you it's even though you want to
win that bad and you want tokeep everybody around, it's gonna be hard
to say, all right, well, let's let's make this a five one,
or let's take a little bit offthe top here, or it's simply
let's structure this a certain way,and that structure might not be as beneficial
(14:37):
to my pocketbook long term. Yeah, we'll see what it ends up being.
I think he's going to get hismoney. I think that he's going
to do what he can to helpthe team keep Tee Higgins and Jamar Chase
for another contract that doesn't necessarily costJoe Burrow any money at all, necessarily
the way they could do it.It just might mean he has to wait
(14:58):
a little bit, or maybe hetakes more of it up front in a
big signing bonus. Who knows.Another fun fact, James, you mentioned
most popular Bengal of all time, and social media is certainly a part of
that. The quarterback position a partof that as well. Who would you
say is the second most popular Bengalof all time, Chad right, Chad,
(15:22):
Anthony Boomer in that order. Probablyin Chad has the benefit of social
media too. Um, what appenmight be right after those guys, believe
it or not, might be aheadof Kenny Anderson if I had to guess,
and then you go, you gokind of down the list. But
if I had to rank it,that would probably be how I would rank
it. Yeah. Maybe recently biasis getting us there a little bit.
(15:45):
I was just curious. Look,Chad o Sinko Johnson has half of the
Instagram followers of Joe Burrow one threepoint eight million. Yeah, but Chad's
got him on Twitter. But Ithink I's more relevant than Twitter. Does
he munch Twitter? Chad does?Yeah, it's the thing. It's it's
(16:06):
kind of He's still got the olduniform as his Twitter pick. Yeah,
it's funny. Um, how manyheadbands are gonna be sold in the Bengals
pro shop in the next couple ofweeks? All of them? I think
they're sold out or they're going tobe sold out. Yeah, I was
thinking about it, man, weshould we should get some I don't know,
(16:27):
you know, we had the shirtswith a lock on him, would
do a headbands with a lock.I can rock a headband while working out.
I would do that for all yourrace Joe Burrow, that'd be fun.
He would want me, but thatwould be fun. That would be
fun. I could beat some Bengals, not him. I don't think i'd
beat him. He's a pretty goodathlete. He's a good athlete, and
(16:48):
he's in great shape, as we'vediscussed. Yeah, all right, so
let's talk about that. Let's talkabout that a little bit. That's how
we started. He's visibly and I'mnot going to get into to two much.
It's the best shape I've ever seenhim, including last year when you
talk about muscle definition. But Ithink it's all good weight. I think
(17:10):
he's really coming into what he's goingto look like as a professional quarterback.
And that was part of the takeawaytoo from his I think of sixteen seventeen
minute news conference is he's been throughthe off seasons now a couple of times,
and yeah, some of them wereshaky. At the ACL recovery.
Last year, he went through theentire off season. It's just things went
(17:32):
awry right as camp started. Andso I think this year this offseason he
has a routine. He's upgraded afew things, updated some stuff of course
training wise, but he's gotten intoa rhythm. And he must just be
eating chicken, built bars and greensbecause he's eating healthy. He looks the
best I've seen him. He's gotI'm sure a fantastic trainer. He mentioned
(17:52):
by name. His name is Dakhis trainer. I'm sure he has an
excellent dietary regime going as Bill. And the thing that you hope that translates
and parlays into is a full offseason. And right you knock on wood
(18:12):
as Paul DANNERDV when he asked JoeBurrow about it in his Pressure today,
and Burrow acknowledged the importance of gettingthrough the off season and having that normal
off season and getting through training campbecause he spends so much time refining and
finding little weaknesses to improve. Youtalked about that as well. And if
(18:33):
you lose time to rehab, torecovery from a surprise surgery and you lose
weight and you got to spend moretime in the weight room, it's just
taking time away from him doing otherwork, which he clearly does like he
does take some time away to decompress, and everything, and he's talked about
that in the past, but hespend so much time because of his work
(18:55):
ethic and the kind of competitor heis working on improving various aspects of his
game. Said, they've been thrownfor two weeks. He's been working on
things in those sessions right working onHe talked about using using your imagination when
you're working on air to get yourselfprepared for game situations, certain defensive linemen
(19:15):
winning in certain ways, having tothrow from different armslots, all these different
kinds of things that he's been workingon all offseason, and so getting to
do that without an eruption, withoutlosing time could only be good for a
team that last year kind of stumbledout of the gates and can't really afford
to do that again. I agree. I think it's kind of wild looking
(19:40):
back, and I've gone through myphone and you bank, you bank stuff,
and you try to save stuff fromeach year, and then you clear
space on your phone, and partiallybecause Quinn is more important than Joe Burrow
when it comes to my cell phonestorage these days. And so I went
back and I was going through someof the twenty twenty two stuff and it's
it's crazy how different he looks. And it was kind of it was a
(20:04):
scramble drill, I think, toget ready for that the start of the
season last year, and it wasa much more serious procedure than people realized
in the moment. And he's afighter and he wasn't going to not play
week one or week two. Buthe's so much leaner than he is now,
or was even towards the end oflast season, obviously, but he's
(20:25):
thicker now and it's like good weightcompared to last year, where I think
it was let's get the weight onjust so I can get through this year
and make it through. And soI am kind of curious to see the
steps he takes. You know, there's there's some MVP hype, like you
mentioned, would not be shocked ifif he makes that push. But he
talked about some other stuff. Ithink we should hit on what he said
(20:48):
about Joonah Williams, Orlando Brown Jr. And so let's let's dive there.
Let's go into that a bit.Coming up next, for a third time
in four seasons, the Miami Heatis squaring off with the Boss in Celtics
for a trip to the NBA Finals. I'm expecting Jimmy to be dominant.
I'm expecting the Heat bench players tostep up. The Los Angeles Dodgers rolled
into the week red hot, boastingthe best record in the National League after
(21:11):
a sweep of the San Diego Padres. This Dodgers team is winning with pitching
and timely hitting, and those arethings that will carry you through in October.
And the Carolina Hurricanes are facing offagainst the Florida Panthers in the NHL's
Eastern Conference Finals. This is ateam that is single minded in their focus.
It's about winning the Stanley Cup.For more on these stories, check

(21:56):
now on the Locked On Presents podcastfeed. Joe Burrow talked about what's going
on with the Bengals offensive line, the excitement of bringing Orlando Brown Junior into
the building. Jonah Williams a topicof conversation as well, James, and
it's kind of the similar line towhat he took with Jesse Bates last year
(22:18):
on Jonah Williams in some ways reallyimportant to this team. I hope we
have him here. We understand usa business, We're going to support him
either way. Speaks to the cultureof the locker room, the closest in
some of these relationships, and atthe same time, I think in awareness
that he's probably going to be theright tackle this year, barring some unforeseen
(22:40):
developments. At this point, Yeah, I think that's the part. Get
on board now, because I wouldbe surprised if it's Jackson Carmen. I
would be surprised if it's anyone butJonah Williams, because they believe in Jonah.
I talked to Ted Carress about itearlier this week on CBT and same
(23:00):
thing. Asked Joe a similar question, and he said, we love Jonah.
Jonah's been a big part of oursuccess the last couple of years,
so hopefully we have him back. But business is business, and Jonah thinks,
and whatever Jonah thinks is best forhis career, what he's going to
do, will support him and whateverhe decides. There's a lot of ways
you could do that, but it'spretty much, Hey, Jonah, I
got your back, we hope you'reback, and everyone else around has kind
(23:25):
of pointed to him coming back. There was a report out there a few
weeks ago. I think it wassaying that he planned on coming back for
the mandatory mini camp. Ted Carrisseemed to think that, didn't say those
exact words. But when I talkto him, I think Jonah is going
to be back, is going tobe at right tackle, and I think
that's good. I think that's agood thing. Even if you're on Team
(23:48):
Jackson Carmen or Team Lell Collins.Well, there's definitely some flaws in their
game, whether it's health, inexperience, all of those things. So having
Jonah around is not a bad thingbecause he's one probably your best option,
and even if you don't feel thatway, he's another option that, at
(24:10):
once upon a time in twenty twentyone on the Super Bowl team was their
best offensive lineman by far. Yeah, I don't think that there's a world
where Jonah being around is a badthing. I think a lot of people
we've talked about this a few times, think that he's some awful, terrible
offensive lineman now which or that he'sgoing to wreck the locker room because he
doesn't want to play right tackle.Like that's just not him. I mean,
(24:32):
he played through a dislocated kneecap allyear last year. It's also not
the locker room. Like, it'shard to imagine that happening in the current
iteration of the Bengals locker room, with the leadership they have in place,
with the kind of way we've seenthese relationships happen in the last few years.
I mean you've heard a Lando Browntalk about this too. I mean,
(24:53):
all these newcomers talk about this stuffimmediately because it can be noise,
right like he can't you can hearabout this all the time. It can't
just be talk like, yeah,we have a great locker room, we
have great culture, we of allthis stuff. Then you hear new guys
getting there and like, oh yeah, I see what they were saying.
Now, I haven't actually seen anythingquite like this before. And that trust
(25:15):
factor, while it is kind ofan intangible thing where it's hard to quantify
and all that stuff hard to arguethat it's not important and not a factor
in how these guys have managed thesuccess they've had in the last two years.
Agreed, Agreed. I think that'sthe aspect of it where no one's
(25:36):
gonna be mad at Jonah for hisrequest and whether it's and let's just say
you hate Jonah, right, I'msaying Bengals fans, because there are some
that just do not want him onthe team. Well, the two biggest
leaders on offense, and I thinkthat's fair Ted Carris and I wrote an
article about it too, but it'sout there. You just check it out
(25:59):
if you're wondering what the hell I'mtalking about. Ted Carris and Joe Burrow
so leader of the offensive line andJoe Burrow leader of the new world when
it comes to Bengals football. Yeah, they both say say those things.
With Jonah, he's going to bewelcome back with open welcomed back with open
arms, and they can be like, hey, you're bothered, you're upset.
(26:23):
Everyone's gonna get it because they wouldbe upset in that position as well.
But it's going to be time toget to work. And so I
think when it's time, I'll getto work, not that he's not working
on his own. Tyler Boyd workingon his own right now, worth noting.
And so yeah, I think Ithink Jonah is going to be just
fine and the Bengals are going tobe better with him than without him.
Yeah that you mentioned, Tyler Boyd. I agree with a lot of what
(26:45):
you talked about there. Even ifhe's death, like, you could do
so much worse for death then.I mean, how many times in the
in the unlikely world where Jonah blanceis your swing tackle? Oh, I
mean best swingle they've had ever?Maybe? Yeah, I mean maybe go
back to Anthony Collins was a swingtackle. He was really good off the
(27:07):
bench. That comes to mind forme. Yeah, Jonah's pretty easy to
make an argument that he's he's he'dbe better than that and not ever,
I don't go back in the historybooks and look, because the Bengals have
have had some good offensive lines.Great tackle player, I'm not, but
it would be a heck of aproblem to have, right And that's why
(27:30):
Jonah comes back. Jackson pushes himfor the job, or is the swing
tackle law gets a clean bell ofhealth, all of those things. That's
great, and we'll need to seewhat happens with There's a bit of a
log gen there money wise at thetackle position, so we'll need to see
what happens there. Everyone talks aboutrestructures. I wonder if le else says,
man, I'd rather be here inthis locker room the stuff that knows
(27:52):
me than go back out there whereI'm not going to get paid anyway coming
off of an ACL. You neverknow. Yeah, we'll see what We'll
see what happens there. Speaking ofTyler boy, you mentioned he's working out
on his own because he wasn't theretoday, I assume is why you bring
that up, right yea. Alsothe only other non Jonah William's, non
injured player who wasn't there, Ithink Teryl Basham was not present from what
(28:15):
I've seen, oh holding out becausethey picked Myles Murphy and I'm just kidding.
I'm kidding. Yeah, ots optionaloptional stuff right now. But most
of the teams there, which isalso good news. There's some other interesting
comments from from te Higgins and JamarChase James. Do you want to get
into those today? Now? Isaid, we hold those we talked about,
(28:37):
you know, we talk about fivenine eighty five because well I might
be able to work on putting someclips together so you could actually hear their
voices and bad live those next show. Well, we'll hear from te Higgins
and Jamar Chase via their locker room. They were locker room interviews on Tuesday.
Some some interesting stuff on the contractJoe Burrs contract to Higgins contract,
(29:00):
mar Chase's goals perhaps for twenty twentythree. It's always fun to hear about
Mars goals because his first goal everyoneremembers was to break every record in the
Bengals record books, and it's probablyon his way. He has a great
chance of doing that the way hiscareer started and how young he is.
(29:22):
But we'll get into those topics andmore on tomorrow's show. That's going to
