that you follow wherever you get yourpodcasts. And it's gonna be a fun
show today because you're gonna hear fromDax Hello one on one conversation I had
with him, plus Mike Hilton, the Bengals cornerback. I talked with him
in the locker room on Tuesday. You'll hear that. But let's get to
some practice observations because we've seen acouple of weeks now of practice. The
(01:57):
Bengals practiced outside because the weather wasjust amazing on Tuesday morning Tuesday afternoon in
Cincinnati. So if you're one ofthe many many listeners in Cincinnati here to
Locked On Bengals, enjoy the weather. It seems like it's going to be
gorgeous for the next few days.So hopefully that is true and the meteorologists
are right that said, let's startwith Joe Burrow, because you know,
(02:19):
and I saw on Sports Center they'retalking about his contract and could he get
a contract done and all of thosethings. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure when that's going to happen. It could happen tomorrow, it could happen
by the time you hear this.If so, we'll have you covered,
of course, because we always doright here on Locked On Bengals. But
the thing that I noticed about JoeBurrow everyone's talking about headbands and his workout
regiment and all of those things. His deep ball was pretty spot on on
(02:44):
Tuesday and hitting Jamar Chason Stride, hitting t Higgins found his go to one
of the equipment managers, Trunk foundTrunk and Stride deep downfield and I was
watching and one of the things thatstood out to me was the fact that
Joe Burrow was working under center playaction. They were working on that,
(03:06):
So that's something to monitor. Idon't think they're going to be more of
an under center team. But ifthere was one flaw in Joe Burrows game,
I think it was it would bethe fact that he doesn't love going
under center and turning his back tothe defense and not being able to see
exactly where the defense is. Andthat's just something dating back to college.
(03:27):
But the other part of it iswhen you have an offensive line like the
Bengals have had in recent years andit's gotten better, was better last year,
I would say, than twenty twentyone and so on. It's improved.
But if they really trust this offensiveline this year, maybe you see
more of that. So just arandom observation, not sure, I haven't
asked anyone about it, Just somethingI thought i'd throw out there. But
(03:49):
his deep ball looks good. Hewas precise, and they were certainly looking
and working on different play action throws. One that stood out, and I
posted these at all Bengals dot Comclips. Essentially, we didn't do highlights
on Cincinnati Bengals talk like we normallydo. But what we did put the
clips together. I did at allBengals dot Com so you could check him
(04:10):
out there. But one that stoodout to me. It was a no
look throw to Trent and Irwin overthe middles play action. He rolled out
to his right and he was lookingright and he threw across this body to
the middle of the field to Trentand Irwin. Might not be nothing,
could be something. It's the middleof May. I'm not going to read
too much into it, but that'scertainly. One of the practice observations is
how good Joe Burrow looked throwing theball downfield, and the fact that he
(04:34):
was working the play action game aswere the other quarterbacks. It's not like
he went rogue on his own.Might have just been a play action heavy
day, but certainly something I willbe monitoring and reporting back on. That
said, some other observations, LellCollins was at practice and had a sleeve
on that right. Mic Twee dida clip of it. Wasn't doing anything,
(04:55):
but was at practice. Certainly Iwould imagine he did got plenty of
rehab work in before practice. Nobrace I had someone asked me about that.
I'm not shocked he wasn't going topractice or do anything like that,
So we'll see. There a coupleof other observations in things that stand out.
One Sidney Jones was back working withNick Cosgray, the Bengals head trainer.
(05:19):
Last week the cornerback was out,and this week he's not only is
he back, but he was movingthrough drills pretty well. I liked the
footwork that I saw so moving well. I think he's going to be just
fine. I don't think there's anythingserious there. Terrell Basham was out last
week. He was back on Tuesdayas well, and then just other observations,
Charlie Jones was returning punts. Lookthe part. It was alongside Kwamie
(05:44):
Laster and Trent Taylor. Obviously he'scompeting with Trent Taylor for the starting job,
and I thought he looked as goodas you would want him to look
comfortable back there, and Brad Robbinshad some really nice punts out of bounds,
directional punts, and Charlie Jones playedhim really well and didn't cross the
out of bounds line to go fieldit if needed to. And the thing
(06:08):
is in NFL games, obviously there'speople on the sideline, so you can
notice. It's much easier to noticethe out of bounds line. He had
the awareness to stop even though there'sno one really on the sideline. On
these practice fields, there's some people, but it's not it's much harder to
realize where the sideline is fielded allof them cleanly, and I certainly think
(06:28):
he's going to be not only inthe mix there at punt returner, but
like I've said before, the favoriteat punt returner. Other things that stood
out. Joe Mixon was back again, looked good. Chase Brown is someone
that I think is interesting. Hewas on the practice field for about an
hour after practice and I noticed himout there. So what was he doing
(06:54):
exactly? I don't know. Wegot kicked out of practice, but I'm
sure he was working on something. So you really like to see that level
of work ethics. So a lotof little observations that I wanted to mention
and pass along. A couple otherscall Audamidas had a boot on his left
foot and was that practice was walkingaround. I don't think it's super serious,
but certainly something that I took downhere in my notes. And I'm
(07:16):
just if you're watching on YouTube lookingthrough. Oh one drill that I wanted
to describe, just to give youan idea of what practice was like.
And I did take a clip ofthis as well. Like I said,
with those practice clips, but FrankPollock had the offensive lineman working the sand
bag drills where you hold out afifty pound bag in front of you,
(07:36):
and that's essentially simulating holding off adefensive lineman, but they were going through
all the footwork that they needed toand then tossing the fifty pound bag and
the offensive linemen were getting some goodwork in. So I'm kind of bullis
on this offensive line anyways. Ithink those that listen regularly believe that Jackson
(07:57):
Carman was taking those reps at righttackle. As you might imagine. With
low Collins out, Jonah Williams stillnot at practice. It is still voluntary.
Saw hammer that home. And thenyeah, I mentioned Mixon look good.
I think he does. I thinkhe looks healthy. So we'll see.
We'll see TBD on him overall. But I will say Joe Burrow shared
(08:18):
on Instagram a Joe Squared image andit was just a picture that the Bengal
shared, but he shared it onig on his story and then it put
it put Joe Squared and it wasa picture him of him and Mixon.
So we'll see. But like Isaid, and like we've said on this
pod before, things keep trending towardsJoe Mixon returning to the team and not
(08:39):
returning being on the team this season, returning for the twenty twenty three campaign.
Up next, Let's hear from DaxHill, the Bengal safety, the
first round pick in twenty twenty two, a guy that, to me,
I've had to defend, which iskind of weird. But I think Dax
Hill is going to make a reallybig pact. I caught up with him
(09:01):
earlier this week for an extended conversationand you'll hear part of that and much
much more Mike Helton the head aswell, coming up next right here on

rolling. On a Wednesday edition ofLocked On Bengals with Dax Hill caught up
with the Bengal safety his rookie year. Well, it was something that I
(11:16):
don't think anyone could have predicted. He moved around, played outside corner,
nickel corner, played a little safetyspecial teams, and so I started off
by asking Dax about that moving allaround in the benefit going into year two
where he's expected to start at safety. Yeah. I feel like that's like
the biggest takeaway that I, youknow, can take from you from my
(11:39):
rookie season. I'm not really knowingwhat I like, I said what I
was gonna do, but being thrownin those different positions allows me to,
you know, feel more comfortable andallow myself to be more confident and more
fluid out there on the field. So I feel like that's like the biggest
thing that I feel like, youknow, just having a positive mindset about
(12:00):
it because you know, not comingin and you know, not going it
the way you wanted to. Youhave to find that positivity somewhere. So
I feel like that's what I youknow, I take away from it.
But I've never been, you know, in this situation. I have,
you know, but not quite likeit in terms of you know, someone
going down and you know, beingyou know, on strings and not knowing
(12:22):
where exactly I'm gonna be at.So I am versatile, but just the
way it went down, that's somethingI'm not used to or it wasn't used
to. So but it was allgood, Like, you know, I
can you know, whatever I cando, I'm gonna do it. So
Yeah, there aren't many five starTop Safety Gatorade Player of the Years that
get moved around, They get putthey get put in the spine. I
(12:43):
think, I mean, was thereever a time where, and I get
it, you're versatile, where thatwas even remotely a possibility? Was it
always safety? I know, youplayed corner some in part of the safety's
responsibility can be the nickel, butoverall you played safety right, and so
that was a pretty big change.I feel like it was just really a
(13:05):
guy given talent. You know, just whenever I started playing football, you
know, I could play offensive defense, whatever that may be. I feel
like that was more of just howI was as a player. So whatever
position that was, like on theactually playing on the field, it would
(13:26):
be it would be like I couldplay it, but it would take time
for me to be get acclimated tothat position. You know, if it
says it was someone else, I'mnot trying to compare myself to anyone else,
but say if someone else came inand was at a different spot,
not expecting to play a certain spot, they probably wouldn't been able to adjust
(13:50):
to that that new position. Soit's just different, different perspectives. You
have to, you know, keepingin mind while you're while you're doing while
you're playing football. So I triedto keep open mind and you know,
just have fun with it as muchas I can. Let's get into the
(14:11):
off season a bit. I certainlynoticed the first time I saw you when
you were back, that you werea little more cut, Hey, maybe
a little bit more muscle. Youmentioned that is that goal number one?
What are your list of off seasongoals and what are you doing to add
weight? M I'm really just youknow, keeping the same schedule. I
(14:35):
don't really try to put pressure onmyself too, you know, I have
to be this wade or have tolook a certain way coming up this season.
Like, I just always try tobe myself and in terms of how
I approached like the off season orjust working out in general. So I
just wanted to do a little alittle bit more in terms of just how
I trained and um, you know, looking you know a little bit different.
(14:58):
I just wanted to see it achange, you know, from Murky
season to my second year. Soit was really kind of just I wanted
to improve, um all all.Like it wasn't like I have to look
a certain way, but just reallyjust sicking improvement. What what's your weight
training schedule look like? Your workoutschedule? Like what what what do you
(15:18):
do and when do you do it? Um like during off season? Yeah
exactly, yeah, Um, duringthe off season it was so I was
in Temple for about a month,so that schedule was about four days a
week. Um, I would trainan hour, hour and a half each
day and then uh that fifth aday I would either be doing some type
(15:43):
of recovery or or some type ofyou know massage, making sure you know,
my phones and muscles all that syntact. So it wasn't you know,
a lot during during a week becauseI didn't really want to, um,
you know, put a lot ofuh just a lot of different you know
workouts, and I just wanted toyou know, make it all you know,
(16:06):
fit to what I wanted to do. So it wasn't a lot,
um, it was good work.At the same time, what do you
what do you do? Like?I love working out and so I'm into
this. So sorry that I'm pepperingyou with questions here, but like are
you going in and squatting a ton? Obviously there was a video of Jamar
where he's power cleaning. You knowa lot of guys going to the weight
(16:27):
room and bench press. But whatdo professional safeties do because I'm sure it's
different than what the average person isdoing at the ship. Um, I'm
I can't really speak for other safeties, but for myself, UM, I
try to just have a good combinationof you know, upper body and lower
(16:48):
body strength, UM, you knowwhatever. I trained with a great trainer
down in Tampa, so I waskind of really just on his his schedule
and what I communicated with him interms of what I wanted. But it
was kind of just more of aum A focal point of just focusing on
my lower body and on my upperbodies. I was going to be there,
but my lower body is something thatI've always um I had issues with,
(17:11):
but I knew I could, youknow, critique a little bit more
on my lower body is So thatwas kind of what that was. Gotcha
that makes sense leg day, Yeah, right now, body looking stronger than
the lower bodies. What would justlooking ahead to the this season and obviously
(17:34):
you're at the stadium training through throughthis offseason in activities and stuff like that
right now with the team, Butwhat would an ideal twenty twenty three season
look like for you? Obviously youwant to win a Super Bowl team wise,
when the division, when the firstget a first round by all of
those things, But individually, Iknow it wasn't ideal as a rookie this
(17:56):
year, it looks different, feelslike you're going to play much more on
defense. What's an ideal season forDaxhel Really just competing at a high level,
you know, every every week,or you know, whenever I was
in high school, college, wheneverI started playing football, it was really
just competing at the high level, not really you know, setting my I
(18:18):
really don't even have goals right now. That's a bad thing, but you
know, I might eventually get tothat point where I'm a set goals for
myself for the season, but reallyjust competing with my teammates, my new
teammates, teammates that came in,and really just being a contributor, m
you know, just doing the bestI can, you know, for the
team, being a team player, and you know, not really just you
(18:41):
know, focusing on myself. Butlike you said, super Bowl and all
that's good, but really just doingwhatever I can, just stay up the
team. Let's talk about some ofthose teammates, because the secondary just it's
getting younger and younger guys I certainlythink you're familiar with. Let's start with
your your college teammate, DJ Turner, Juan Drago, who that's like the
(19:04):
coolest name ever, I would sayfor a football player. Do you call
what do you call DJ? Sometimes? I call him DJ sometimes I call
him drago Um, just different names, whatever comes to my mind. He
can some of the different things youcould call him nowadays. I mean a
lot of people don't even know thatwas his name. It came at me.
(19:26):
They were like, that's a realfamily. Yeah, that's his real
name. I'm like, you mightas well ask them for yourself, like
you right there, like, buthe's uh, but yeah, he's His
name is all over the place aroundthe locker room now. So he brings
the speed for two six, youbring the speed, right. I know
it was a little I don't evenwant to say slower, but it was
(19:47):
sub four four? Did you runa four three eight? I think something
like that. Have you ever beathim in a race? We've never raced.
Uh, So that's something you know, we had to tune into.
Really, you know, somebody thinkyou could huh do you think? Do
you think you could beat him ina race? I feel I didn't even
(20:10):
run my fastest though. For somereason I felt slow that that day.
It was a long compline. Ifeel like I was a little bit slower.
But I'll give it to him race. I mean, I don't even
know you're that fast? So I'llgive it should be a good race if
that ever happened. Good stuff fromDax Hill, the Bengals safety. You
can listen to that entire conversation onYouTube Cincinnati Bengals Talk. I talked with
(20:32):
him for about thirty one minute,so I wanted to give it Locked On
Bengals listeners at least a clip abite of the Dax Hill apple, so
to speak. And let's continue ourone on one conversations and let's stick with
the secondary theme. I talked withBengals cornerback Mike Hilton in the locker room
on Tuesday. You'll hear that conversationcoming up next. There's no offseason for

Part of the Locked On podcast networkyour team every day. Just as we
definitely all predicted the eight seed MiamiHeat or one win away from the NBA
Finals, the Heat have the urgencythey have focus, they smell blood in
the water, they punch the Celticsin the mouth, and the Celtics folded.
The twenty twenty three w NBA seasonis officially underway. Blia Boston made
(21:37):
her w GA debut against the ConnecticutSun on Friday. The number one thing
for me is that she's really good. And four teams are left battling for
two spots in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Floor to Panthers in Vegas,
Golden Knights found ways to win inovertime and dramatic fashion. For more on
all these stories, check out newepisodes of Locked on Heat, Locked On

Women's Basketball, and Locked on NHL, all free and available wherever you get
podcasts. Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton isone of the biggest pieces on this defense.
Maybe not size wise, but whenit comes down to it, he
certainly is a huge part of whatLuana Rumo does. And they have some
new faces, Dax Hill being oneof them. No, he's not new.
(22:19):
He was on the roster last year, but he's expected to start this
year, and so I thought itkind of fit with the theme. Let's
talk with Mike Hilton about Dax Hill. Tyson Anderson, Hitobe Woozier's recovery,
what Hilton is hoping to improve onthis offseason, and so much more.
I started off by asking Mike whatthis offseason has been Mike, and how
(22:40):
important these offseason programs are in thismove man. Having all the guys back,
kind of getting our football rhythm alittle bit, and just being being
around the guys. You know,it's exciting feeling the football's finally been getting
Bay rolling, so we're ready. What's the value in these workouts and having
most of the guys here, Numberone, just starting with our chemistry and
(23:02):
you know, just making sure everybody'sin line with the scheme. You know,
new guys getting pushing into some newroles like Dans and bringing in Nick
and guys like that, and youknow this's important for the new guys.
It's a new looking secondary. You'reone of the guys that have been around
the past couple of years during theseruns. How different is the secondary going
to look this season? I knowthat's not a question you can for sure
(23:23):
answer, but it's gonna look different. Yeah, we definitely lost a lot
of experience in plays with Jesse andVaughn, but we know what Dax and
it. You know, we gotthose same type of guys, two hungry
players and two coachable guys, andwe expect a lot of them from this
year. But we know as asa secondary, we kind of gotta we
got banned together a little more. You know, Like I said, we
lost a lot of leadership and experience. But with me Cheeto guys like that,
(23:45):
you know, we feel like wecan take that roll over. Looking
specifically at Das, he had toplay multiple spots last year, how valuable
do you think that's gonna be forhim long term adjusting to life in the
NFL. I know he didn't playa ton on defense, but he had
to play where many hats last year. Yeah, it shows versatility, and
you know that's how you last inthis league, you know, being able
to be versatil And he's probably themost versail guy on his team, especially
(24:07):
on his defense. And we expecta lot from me this year. As
far as Nick goes, it's notjust Nick, obviously, he's a veteran,
he's Super Bowl champ, all ofthose things. Jordan battle DJ as
well, I mean some rookies aswell expected to slide into Oh yeah,
man, we bought him here fora reason, so we expect a lot
from him. Man, they knowthe type of team they're coming into and
they just want to contribute to helpus on the Super Bowl. Tyson Anderson
(24:30):
is a guy I think that justgoes under the radar because he was a
fifth rounder that had obviously drafted decksearlier at that same position. You signed
Nick in your draft, Jordan inthe third round, not necessarily the fifth
round. What does Tyson ring tothe table? Athleticism, versatility, speed,
He didn't get a chance to showit a last year, but we're
excited to get it for him toget on the field this year and show
(24:52):
what he can do. Like Isaid, just just watching the movie,
he moves well. Like I said, he's tall, he can run,
So just just a matter of timefor him to hit the field and show
what he can do for us.Let's talk about you for a second,
because I think we ask Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, some of these guys
what they're looking to improve on individuallyyear after year. You don't necessarily ask
defensive players that. So I'm curiouswhat in your game are you trying to
(25:15):
improve on this offseason? Just tryingto get the ball more, trying to
try and trying to create more turnovers. I know the type of playmaker I
am, so I feel I cantake that to the next level by taking
the ball away, putting our offenseon short field, and just just being
a guy to to make that gamechange and play. Is that reading the
defense more? Is it punching theball out? Is it all of the
above? All the above? Yougotta you gotta know what type of scheme
(25:38):
you're going against to put yourself ina position to make plays. And then
you know, the ripping the ball. You know, just it's everything.
So I feel like that's something I'mgoing to focus on a lot this year,
is just trying to be a turnovermonster. Shiitebozia is obviously a big
part of this defense. I've seensome of the workouts and stuff. It
looks like he's recovering. Well, what's your expectation for him coming into this
(26:00):
year, because I just like,I don't like, oh, he's gonna
be ready to go. I knowthat might not be fair, but no,
we were spent a lot from cthough we know the work he's put
in to get back. Obviously he'snot there yet, but we still got
plenty of time. Man. Weknow at some point he's going to be
back to who he was and he'sa guy we're gonna need on his defense
for us to make a super Bowlrun. So we're excited about his comeback.
(26:22):
If I would have told you whenyou signed with this team that you
would have appeared in back to backan FC championship games, that you would
have been in a super Bowl andthat I think expectation is to make another
run and get back to the superBowl. Outside and certainly inside this locker
room, what would you have said? Uh? I probably gave the coach
answer. Boy, You're like, yeah, I believe it, But honestly,
(26:45):
I would have some little doubts. But man, over these last three
three years, then it's been it'sbeen fun. Is that this rod has
been fun and the experience has beenfun. And you know, we we've
gotten close this last two but wefeel special about this group we have this
year, and we feel like thiscould be the year. Mike, I
appreciate the time. Hopefully it isthe year. Thanks great stuff there from
Mike Hilton, who is the manI've never asked Mike Hilton to come on
(27:08):
or do an interview in him declinit, he always says yes, He's
always down for it and shout outto him. Shout out to you for
listening to this podcast. Coming upon tomorrow's show, Mike Santaggona is going
to join us to discuss two guys, Bengal SAMs will discuss Miles Murphy,
the Bengals first round pick, andthen Juan Drago Turner DJ Turner, and
(27:33):
it's it's gonna be fun to diveinto these guys because he's written about him
for all Bengals dot Com. He'swatched the film. So the positives,
the negatives, the concerns, thethings that they could improve on right away
in the NFL. We will diveinto that and so much more with Bengal
Sans on tomorrow's show. So hitthat subscribe button on YouTube, make sure
you follow wherever you get your podcasts. And for Jakelisco, I'm James Ropine
(27:56):
signing off for now. Thank youso much for listening to the Lockdown Bengals
podcast. Just as we definitely allpredicted, the eight seed Miami Heat are
one win away from the NBA Finals. The Heat have the urgency they have
focused, they smell blood in thewater, They punch the Celtics in the
mouth, and the Celtics folded. The twenty twenty three w NBA season is
