Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Football in the Natty. Brought to you by
Belterra Casino and Belterra Park on ESPN 1530. The official
home of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Bengals and Ravens on Sunday at 1 o'clock. Jonas Schaefer
covers the Ravens for the Baltimore Banner, which is an
outstanding publication. He's been busy today because Lamar Jackson was
up and dressed for practice and doing some stuff for
the portion of the workout today that Jonas and his
peers did. could watch. And so Jonas, I appreciate the

(00:31):
time feels like there is from a Ravens perspective, a
sliver of hope that Lamar is going to be able
to go on Sunday. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
You know, it was a kind of a weird situation
yesterday on Wednesday because we didn't see him out at
the start of practice, you know, in the 20 to
30 minute window.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
And then we get to.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
The post-practice presser and there he is walking out into
the into the media facility, into the team facility with teammates.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
He's not in uniform. He's wearing sweats.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Jesse Minter told us afterward that he got some reps
in with the team. He was obviously a limited participant
because of that. And then today, we're wondering whether that
was all for show. And there he is jogging out
onto the field, still looking not 100% healthy, but He
was getting reps with the team. He was doing stuff
in individuals. He was passing to receivers down the field.

(01:25):
So it's going to be a situation that obviously bears monitoring,
but I definitely feel more optimistic about his chances of
going Sunday than I did Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
That's for dang sure.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, no, certainly feel that way. It's Trey Hendrickson. It's
the Bengals' Trey Hendrickson reunion. I know he's missed games,
but how would you encapsulate the Trey Hendrickson era so far?

Speaker 1 (01:48):
I think what we've seen so far has been pretty
dang good. He's, I think, number one in the NFL
according to next-gen stats in pressure rate. And that is, again,
with only nine fingers available, eight in some games because
of that broken bone.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
That he suffered. And that was a week one situation.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
So it's been something that has lingered over the first
month and a half of the season.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
And it's something that may linger over the rest of
the season.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
You know, it's, I don't really know how, how healthy
a broken bone can get when you're playing with your hands,
literally on every single play. But, you know, he's obviously,
I think the Trey Hendrickson that a lot of Bengals
fans will remember, he's been a one-sided rusher. The Ravens
rushed him a couple times from the other side on

(02:38):
Sunday against Cleveland.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
He did not go particularly well.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
I think on his first draft, Titus Howard literally, you know,
knocked him to the ground on all fours. But he's
been a better run defender than I imagined he would be.
I know, like, the stats and the splits did not
particularly favor him there, but.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
I think he's done... okay which is obviously.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
A very important part of any kind of too high
defense so uh i think the hope obviously is that
he gets healthy and stays healthy but i think for
considering the price tag the ravens paid for him he
has performed like a top shelf pass rusher.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
What happened last week against the browns.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
I think it just it started with the offense not
really being able to find its footing you know tyler
humley is not the kind of quarterback that you want
to task with third and sevens, third and nines, third
and longs. He's just, he's a guy who's average at
the target is among the source in the league. And
that offensive line of the Ravens just was not really

(03:36):
up to snuff against the, the, the Browns pass rush. And,
you know, you would have thought that, okay, you know,
the worst has passed now that miles Gary is out
of the division, but yeah, They have a bunch of
really capable pieces, even though Jared Burse is not really
a high-stack guy. And they just kind of got after
the Ravens, pretty much every guy on that offensive line. And,
you know, it's a banged-up group. Ryan Stanley's playing with

(03:58):
a toe injury. John Simpson has been dealing with a
core injury. Vanga Iwane is now apparently dealing with an
ankle injury. Cam Jorgens just got out of the concussion protocol,
and we'll see how he fares, assuming that he starts
on Sunday. And the Ravens just didn't have enough answers.
You know, Rashawn Bateman, Left that game, Derrick Henry fumbled
at an inopportune time, which seems.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Like just a kind of an.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Unfortunate situation for him because whenever he fumbles, basically the
Ravens lose. And it's just, you know, as you know,
weird stuff happens in AFC North games. And the Ravens'
defense quarters one through three, one of the best in
the NFL, the quarter four, that is really where they've.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Gotten us in trouble.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
And, you know, Deshaun Watson, obviously not a guy, that
kind of guy that you want to hang around he's
been one of the NFL's clutchest quarterbacks in some of
these situations and unfortunately for them it was just kind
of one bad coverage play that that leads that Jerry
Judy catch and run that gets them into field goal
range and And just like that, you kind of watch
a 10-0 first quarter lead turn into a 13-10 loss.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Jonas Schaefer is with us for another minute or two
from the Baltimore Banner. Follow him at Jonas underscore Schaefer.
Jesse Minner's a Cincinnati guy. And so, you know, not
that we're not always paying attention to the Baltimore Ravens,
but maybe a little bit more closely. What have been
your impressions of him?

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah, I mean, obviously he is kind of burdened with
being the fixer for a lot of John Harbaugh era trauma. Um, yeah,
I think the Ravens, obviously over the years, I think
John Harbaugh's demise was because of their inability to hold onto.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
These, these, uh, second athletes, these fourth quarter leaves.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
And you saw, uh, the Ravens just kind of shoot
themselves in the foot and that home opener loss to
the saints in a week to that, you know, stirred
up a lot of the ghosts in Baltimore.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
And then you saw, uh, the same kind of situation
on Sunday in.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Cleveland, where it's an early lead against a team that
I think you are more talented than in a lot
of key spots, and yet the Ravens just are not
able to put the Browns away. So I think they
are still waiting for this kind of transformative defensive impact
that he had in L.A.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
With the Chargers to be felt here.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Obviously, his decision to hire Declan Doyle As the offensive coordinator,
I think he's paying dividends clearly. I think of the two,
Declan Doyle has been the more impressive coordinator. But, you know,
you look at just kind of that kind of Chargers
defense more last year, and it took a while to
get going. It took a while to fix the run defense.
And then you saw even with guys like Tony Jefferson
being the back end there, that secondary was really impressive.

(06:38):
So I still think that there are hopes, high hopes
for what this team can look like when everything is
really clicking. But the problem for the Ravens so far
through six games is you can maybe kind of one
on one finger, the number of times where the offense, defense,
special teams have all been linked up and kind of,
you know, symphonic and just how well they're playing together.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Tremendous stuff. As always, Jonas can't thank you enough. No,
you're very busy. I appreciate the time, man.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Thank you. Anytime. Appreciate you having me on.
