Listen anytime anywhere on the iHeartRadio app. I've got good
news if you're a Bengals fan. And here's what it is.
(01:55):
So I think there is some apprehension and in some
corners dread for this game on Sunday, and to a degree,
I get it. Look, the Bengals are underdogs and frankly
they should be. Baltimore has been better. Baltimore is a
toe and a bad ten minute stretch against the Raiders
away from being four to zero. They were dominant for
three quarters against Dallas a week and a half ago.
(02:17):
They were dominant for four quarters against the Buffalo Bills,
a good Buffalo Bills team on Sunday Night. Derrick Henry
was terrific. We know what Lamar Jackson can do. We
understand the capability of that defense, and we know what
the Bengals aren't good at, specifically playing defense, pass rush,
run stopping. They've been bad. But here's the good news.
(02:39):
The Bengals over their last two games have scored eight touchdowns. Now,
admittedly not against great defenses. Washington, for all the success
the Commanders have had over the last couple of weeks,
is not a very good defense, and neither is Carolina.
But the Bengals have scored eight touchdowns for each over
the last two games. They have scored seventy seven points.
(03:00):
Seventy seven points over their last two games. They're healthy
on offense. They've got a multitude of weapons. They have
more tight ends than they know what to do with.
They have two top end Pro Bowl caliber wide receivers.
They've got productive running backs who can do multiple things.
(03:21):
They've got a healthy offensive line that's playing well. Joe
Burrow just came off a game in which, for just
the third time in his career, he played an entire
game without getting sacked. He was barely touched. Think about that.
How many times over the last couple of years have
we talked about, God, it would be great if they
could just not hit Joe Burrow that much. They barely
(03:43):
touched him the Panthers on Sunday. Now, I know the
Baltimore Ravens are a different animal. You could ask Josh
Allen and I know we're all worried about what Derrick
Henry can do, and we're all worried about the Bengals defense,
and for good reason. The defense is not good. But
if they're ever gonna be equipped to win a big
game in spite of their defense, it's now. They don't
(04:06):
need to pitch a shutout on Sunday. They don't even need,
I think, to hold the Baltimore Ravens to twenty or
fewer points. This team's offense is really playing well. It's
playing efficiently, It's not one dimensional. It feels like it's
(04:27):
rounding in the form nicely. Burrow looks more and more comfortable.
Like the reason we're so excited about the pieces the
Bengals have on offense is not because well, they're gonna
win every game forty two to seven. It's because it
should be good enough to overcome what it's not on defense.
That's good news. Bad news is the Bengals recently haven't
(04:50):
been very good at building a defense in the draft
and with development that coming up in just a bit.
You can call the show anytime. Five win, three seven
four nine, fifteen thirty and eight sixty six seven oh
two three seven seven six at Mulagar is how you
can hit me up on X. I have a tale
of two emails that I got to read here a
(05:11):
little bit later on that made me laugh. But first
we'll step aside. Joe Burrow will be at the podium.
You'll hear him chat with the assembled members of the
professional football media next on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports
Station Cincinnati's ES three sixty. Give us some suggestions.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
I need suggestion, three massive sixty MINX segments.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Is this the correct way to do it? Uh?
Speaker 5 (05:33):
No?
Speaker 6 (05:34):
Cincy three sixty tomorrow, which twelve noon on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Sixteen after three, This is ESPN fifteen thirty. We're in
a holding pattern as we say, waiting for Joe Burrow.
Bengals just wrapping up practice. Miles Murphy and McKinley Jackson
have been cleared to practice, which is uh awesome and
uh Trey Hendrick Dickson was spot addressed, so that's good.
(06:02):
More on that here in a bit. Joe Burrows said
to talk don't forget Bengals Ravens Sunday at one Pregame
coverage on ESPN fifteen thirty starts at nine am. We're
on from the Holy Grail before the game, Tony Pike,
ken Brew and me. We hope to see you there.
And also tonight Bengals game plan from six to eight
live on ESPN fifteen thirty with Dan Horde and Dave Lapp.
(06:24):
We have that to look forward to as well. If
you're looking for FC Cincinnati Soccer tonight, the Orange and
Blue taking on New York City FC. That will air
on Fox Sports thirteen sixty. If you missed yesterday's segment
with Paul Danner Junior, Our Hour Together, he was and
you would expect this. He was terrific and we talked
about a lot of different things, from Eric All's ascension
(06:47):
to how good the offense has looked, to looking for
solutions on defense, to what to expect on Sunday against
the Baltimore Ravens. Also the Tony and Mo Football Show.
If you missed it, you can go find any of
this stuff on the Eye Heart Radio app. Also on
my page at ESPN fifteen thirty dot com. Podcasts of
our show are a service of Long Neck Sports Grill,

to post up and watch the Bengals, watch college football,
watch Thursday night football, watch football Sunday morning from London,
watch the baseball playoffs, or you know what, not watch
anything and just hang out with your friends and talk
whatever you want to do. Long Neck Sports grow Wilder.
Hebren Richwood and the home of the Roundtable Show. I
(07:32):
believe Richwood Tomorrow night with Lance and Rocky, I will
have Joe Burrow for you. The moment he begins talking
to the assembled pro football media, I'm not trying to
gloss over what the Bengals aren't on defense, because it's
frustrating to watch, and it's concerning. And it's not just
concerning for Sunday, it's concerning for the entire season. But
(07:55):
we've said often about the Bengals, like, give me Burrow
and the postseason and I'll take my chances. Right, We've
we've said that often. I'll be honest, man, give me
Burrow in this offense at home, in a bit of
a desperation situation, I don't feel awful. Now. This is
not how I want to have to win games. This this,
(08:17):
this probably isn't sustainable if the idea is for the
Bengals to win a championship, right, have a defense that's
just a sieve, rarely forcing punts being moved up and
down against like this isn't gonna work. But for the
purposes of winning Sunday, for the purposes of frankly, keeping
the season alive on Sunday. Uh, I'm not. I'm not
(08:38):
filled with maybe as much doom and gloom as everybody else,
because well, I agree with what we have said for
a while, which is, give me Burrow and I've got
a chance against everybody. Not give me a physically compromised burrow.
Not give me a Burrow who's playing behind an offensive
line that's gonna get him killed. Not give me Burrow
(08:58):
and one weapon, Give me Burrow and what he's got
at his disposal. Right now, I think it kind of
gets lost. And again, you can contextualize it however you wish,
looking at the opponents they've played, the quality of the
defenses they've gone against. Aren't that many teams in the
NFL over the last couple of weeks that have performed
as effectively and as efficiently as the Bengals have on offense.
(09:22):
I'm not trying to tell you that this team's gonna
go twelve and five, win the North and a steam
roll to New Orleans behind an offense that's overcoming a
crappy defense. But I'll frankly be honest with you, man,
I really worry about just keep the season going by
winning the game on Sunday. I've got a shot at
(09:42):
home with this offense. I've got a shot at home
with the multiplicity of this offense, with the variety of
things it can do, with the various weapons they have,
with the pass protection they're getting, with the run blocking
they're getting. Also, if they can fix the defense, where
if they can just make it marginally better or get
(10:05):
it to somewhere approaching league average, And it proves that
what we are seeing offensively is just the beginning, and
they can go from what we've seen over the last
couple of weeks, this team still has a shot to
be pretty damn good. Here's Joe Burrow live right now
with the assembled professional football media.
Speaker 7 (10:29):
We have a person, we have an alignment that are
they gonna turn the music off?
Speaker 2 (10:43):
Are they gonna kill the music so we can actually
hear Joe Burrow stuff.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
You know, they're gonna they're gonna mix it out. They're
gonna try to confuse the quarterback. They're gonna make any
pressure here now, they're gonna send a zero blitz of time.
Speaker 8 (10:56):
So you have to be under.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
Keys and confusing the keys as unders. Yeah, it's uh,
we found some musics doing it, you know what, crash
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Whether I mean they're they're playing music over the quarterback
of the bank. We can't hear them right. This is
an NFL franchise, correct, Oh there it is. I tweeted
on to turn the music off. Teams can't just prepare
for You're welcome. Everybody have the plays on the run
last week.
Speaker 9 (11:36):
Is that just something that maybe it takes a week
or two to do that, and once you get a
couple of those plays, you're kind of good.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
For the rest of the season. What do you mean
say that again?
Speaker 9 (11:44):
Yeah, the plays on the run. It seems like the
previous years, you'll you'll have a couple of big scrabbles
and then you're doing that the rest of the year
because it maybe you've got to do it a couple
of times and then you kind of check that box.
Speaker 10 (11:53):
Yeah, I think, you know, it kind of depends on
the spot, depends on the down and distance. You know,
you don't have a ton of opportunities to.
Speaker 5 (12:01):
Go and do that.
Speaker 10 (12:02):
And you know, there was one play on Monday night
where I felt like I could have done that and
I didn't on third down and I ended up throwing
the ball away. So that was kind of an emphasis
for me coming into that game. This game was, you know,
pick my spots to to be able to extend and
try to create plays and create first downs, but being
(12:26):
smart about it obviously and not getting us in in
in negative situations. But I think that's something that you know,
you're always growing and learning and figuring out when.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
You can and when you can't do that kind of stuff.
Speaker 9 (12:39):
You're liter that despite the record, there's a lot of confidence.
Speaker 11 (12:42):
It's an internal way that y'all can go out and
beat Baltimore if y'all play as.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Well as you can't get how y'all.
Speaker 11 (12:47):
Goot the last couple weeks using the most confidence y'all.
Speaker 5 (12:49):
Got, kids, Yeah, I mean it. We're confident in our group.
Speaker 10 (12:57):
You know, we're we're rolling on offense right now, which
is you know, we've still left some some points out there,
which you know, when you score thirty three thirty four
back to back and you feel like that you've left
points on the board, you know it's a good spot
to be as an offense. So you know we're gonna
continue to you know, chase perfection, trying to score on
(13:21):
every drive, and you know it's a big opportunity we
thrive in these moments. We're excited about it, you know,
in front of our fans that that we're gonna need
on Sunday, I hope they're excited to h So we're
putting in the work this week to go out and
put our best foot forward.
Speaker 5 (13:36):
Do we have a Pro Bowl or.
Speaker 12 (13:37):
At least one at every level, and that defense is
a little bit unusual from a sid max's standpoint. Is
it the personnel make it even tougher the defense make
the personnel better? Is it perfect fit?
Speaker 5 (13:48):
What's it's all? It's always a combination of both.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
They obviously have really good players.
Speaker 10 (13:53):
That's that's obvious if you ever watched a Baltimore Ravens
football game.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
But you know, the teams.
Speaker 10 (14:02):
Compliment they're really good players with really good scheme, and
I would I would say that's what they do.
Speaker 13 (14:07):
Your reaction when they signed Garrett Henry or added Garrick Hendry, Remember.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
Bridgie thought, obviously he's one of the all time greats.
Speaker 10 (14:16):
You know he he's gonna be able to control the clock.
You know they're gonna give it to him a lot.
That's that's his game. That's the Ravens way to play football. So,
like I said, we got to take advantage of all
the opportunities that we that we have because there's not
gonna be a tom No.
Speaker 11 (14:30):
You're not on social media much.
Speaker 14 (14:32):
There't know if you saw, but there were some headlines
about uh a comment that Baker Mayfield made about the
way he's leading to Tampa Bay locker room compared to
when Tom Brady was there. And I know you shared
that you've gotten closer to Tom Brady. What are some
of the things that you've learned most from him in
your short time of getting.
Speaker 10 (14:51):
To know Yeah, I would say, you know, I'll keep
most most of those conversations private. But you know, whenever
I I talk to people that have I wouldn't say
this is specific to him, but whenever I talk to
people that have been there and done that and and
live that kind.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
Of life, you know, you always try to just understand
how they you know, kept distractions.
Speaker 10 (15:16):
At the minimum, what they did to uh, you know,
insulate themselves from outside noise and continue to uh you know,
be themselves and and put their their work first. Cause
that's always tough. In the position that we are.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
How much emphasis does there need to be for this
team have played better against condition upon as this season?
Speaker 5 (15:43):
We need to play better against everybody in general. I
would say we haven't played our best ball yet. Uh.
Speaker 10 (15:48):
We we have to continue to get better throughout the week.
We have to get better week to week. You know,
they stay the same, then you're getting worse cause EVERYBODYLSE
is getting better, So we just have to continue to
get better no matter what.
Speaker 9 (16:02):
Minoke and just be a talent setting game for this
team in the Division North.
Speaker 8 (16:06):
Oh yeah, I.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
Guess we're just worried about getting the win.
Speaker 8 (16:10):
You know.
Speaker 10 (16:10):
I'm not really worried about what what the win says
to to the outside world or what it what what
it symbolizes. I'm just trying to get the win. Winning
up front is always important at any level of football,
but there seems to be a major focus on that,
a lot of talk about that coming into these AFC
(16:30):
North games.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Why is that such a talking point.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Such a focus in these games?
Speaker 10 (16:36):
Because we know the the kind of pass rushers and
defensive linemen that the teams in the.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
ANFC North have. You know, they're they're the best in
the business.
Speaker 10 (16:44):
Ravens, Steelers, Browns, they all have top, top notch pass.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
Rushers as well as we do. Uh and so you
have to control the line of scrimmage otherwise those guys
are gonna direct the game.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
How often do you go back either years against the
same opponents watching it all or say.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
For all of them, Yeah, usually go back abut a year.
Speaker 10 (17:04):
You know, I don't typically go back further than that,
because you know, year to year, you you change so much.
You know, personnel changes, coaches change, philosophy change, and you
can always think about plays here and there and and
take things from that.
Speaker 5 (17:20):
But I wouldn't say I go back super far.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Why wise, perfection and so top of mind, because you
can break this week just gonna.
Speaker 10 (17:28):
That's always been my goal is to to go out
and play perfect. Perfect is not always one hundred percent
completion percentage or five touchdowns. It's putting yourself and your
team in the best position each play, playing and play
out to have the best possible result on that play.
You know, sometimes that's a zero yard game and sometimes
(17:49):
that's a sack. Just kind of depends on the play.
And so I'm always chasing that.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
If you like a locker for a locker with the
successful needs and ault share in the same linest.
Speaker 13 (17:59):
In order to go or want to go, I would
say that if you like, you don't have that at
this point, sup.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
So yeah, if you don't pick, you pick Gino's bring
at all.
Speaker 10 (18:07):
If there's a guy who's in the middle of the
defense last year, is there a chance to.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Spend some time for this week. And yeah, I'll definitely
ask Gino.
Speaker 9 (18:15):
Some questions you your last drive against Baltimore last year,
not a good ending, but the drive itself to score.
What did you like about the things you guys did
on that drive that let you guys.
Speaker 5 (18:24):
Keep the leave to send more mm? If I remember right,
we we hit some explosive plays.
Speaker 10 (18:30):
We ran the ball well, you know, the last the
last you know, last year and and going into the
year before that, we've really run the ball really efficiently
against this against this group, We're gonna have to do
that again. We have to do a better job of,
you know, hitting our explosives when the opportunities present themselves, because, uh,
against this group, there they don't they don't give up
(18:52):
explosive plays like that. You know, their corners are really
well coached. They're gonna keep everything in front if.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
They like to hold their shell, and they'll mix in
a single high coverage here and there.
Speaker 10 (19:02):
But that's not who they are. And so you'll get
a couple of those a game. And when you do
see that, and when you do get an aggressive defensive call,
you really have to take advantage of it.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
Why are Zach's Chase Brown centric great hit.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
In this offensive and you see it on Sundays.
Speaker 10 (19:19):
Zach continues to hit the right hole, do exactly what
his job is, break tackles, be the physical runner, and
then Chase will come in and you know, really break a.
Speaker 5 (19:33):
I mean you see how fast Chase hits the hole.
Speaker 10 (19:35):
He just goes in there, no fear, delivers contact, breaks tackles,
runs away from people.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
Those guys are playing at a really high level.
Speaker 12 (19:44):
Zach Orr, does he put any tweaks or wrinkles in to.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
The defensive steam?
Speaker 9 (19:49):
And if he hasn't.
Speaker 12 (19:50):
Yet, you anticipate maybe the division of going you might
see something that you haven't seen yet.
Speaker 10 (19:55):
Yeah, I'm sure we'll see something that we haven't seen.
That's you know, just about every week, you do. You know,
teams usually have a a Jamar plan or you know
some third down wrinkles, pressure pressure wrinkle here and there.
Speaker 5 (20:08):
So we're w we'll be ready to adapt.
Speaker 15 (20:10):
John, I saw your dad tweeted about an interaction they
had with Pete Rose at some point. Curious if you
had any or if you could speak to kind of
the impact he sat on Cincinnati Sports Plans face.
Speaker 5 (20:21):
No, I never met never met him, but uh and
I'm moving to Ohio.
Speaker 10 (20:26):
When I was little, you know, his he was a
big name around here and somebody that you heard and
and saw highlights of all the time. He's still the
leading hit hitter in MLB history, I believe. So whenever
you have a guy that has a record like that
has stood so long, that's uh always an impressive thing
(20:47):
and something to be admired.
Speaker 11 (20:50):
Your dad said, Pete told him that you played football
like he played baseball.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Does that mean you think to you? What does that mean?
I don't know what that means to me? Uh hustle Mindstein. Yeah.
You know, whenever you have a.
Speaker 10 (21:09):
Great player in any sport that gives you a compliment
like that, it's obviously appreciated. So sad, sad day for
Cincinnati sports fans. I would say, thanks us, thanks job.
Speaker 2 (21:23):

Speaker 2 (22:28):
We're gonna wrestle with the Ravens. Why don't they play
football against them? Well, they might have a better chance. Wrestling,
might have a better chance. They're gonna have to wrestle
Derrick Henry to the ground. Uh, they have a better
chance of doing that. Perhaps if they have. Trey Hendrickson,
he suited up for practice. Bengals have not listed their

com uh nineteen away from four o'clock. They're gonna wrestle.
(24:41):
They're gonna wrestle with the Ravens. Joe Burrow said that
he's got to be perfect in that press conference. I
think that that part aired while the music wasn't drowning
him out right. He says, I've got to be perfect,
and he may be right, And to some degree, what
we've come to know about Joe Burrow is he is
(25:01):
a perfectionist. Also, have you noticed this, whenever we talk
about the quarterback of the Bengals, we say both names
Joe Burrow. We don't call him just Joe, and we
don't call him just Burrow. It's always Joe Burrow. But
he says he's got to be perfect. It's kind of interesting.
There's two things I guess somewhat interesting about that number One,
to a degree, he's kind of making a reference to
(25:23):
the team's defense being awful. Joe wasn't perfect against Washington.
He was really good. He's really good. He was good
enough most of the time to win. He was good
enough that those morons on those shows where they just
scream at each other about sports should not have criticized
Joe for how he played against Washington. But he wasn't perfect,
(25:45):
and because he wasn't perfect, the Bengals lost, And that's
not really the reason why the Bengals lost. The Bengals
lost because Jane Daniels looks like the real deal. Bengals
never came close to touch in him, and the defense
was slow that night. Joe was also not perfect against
the Carolina Panthers. Had he been, they probably blowed Carolina's
doors off. Instead, it was a I never felt like
(26:08):
the Bengals were gonna lose the game, but the game
was maybe a little bit too close for comfort. Ten
point went on the road against the bad team. They
did cover, but Joe wasn't perfect. This week, He's playing
the best team they've played, maybe all season long. That
includes the Kansas City Chiefs, who yes are undefeated. I
think Baltimore, even though they lost head to head by
(26:31):
a toenail, I think Baltimore's better team right now. They've
had basically a bad quarter, really a bad quarter. Stood
toe to toe with the Chiefs at Arrowhead, had the
Raiders beaten. Week two, played a bad ten minutes in
the fourth, Vegas stole the game. They played a bad
(26:52):
quarter against the Cowboys, but they were so far out
ahead that it didn't matter. So But I think what
Joe's doing is he's kind of saying acknowledging how good
the other team's offense is, he's also acknowledging how bad
the Bengals are defensively. It's kind of an interesting way
of putting it. Right, He's not gonna come out and
go man, our defense sucks. He's not gonna say that.
(27:13):
He's not gonna call any player out. He's not gonna
call lou Anarumo out. He's not gonna say, God, yeah, Look,
we've scored seventy seven points over the last two games.
We should have two convincing wins. Instead, we have a
somewhat close win and a loss. That's an interesting way
of putting it. I've got to be perfect.
Speaker 16 (27:32):
Now.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
There's so much to like about Joe Burrow that it's
possible that while trying to be perfect, he plays great.
And maybe he plays perfect or close to it in
the Bengals role. But that is quite a burden to
where if you're a quarterback, isn't it. That is quite
a burden to take the field with in any game,
(27:56):
especially one like this. And I hate to be overly dramatic,
let's be clear about this. If the Bengals are one
in four, dude, we're gonna really have to do some
convincing of ourselves to believe that this team has still
got a chance to at least win the division, and
probably also we're going to eliminate him from postseason contention.
Like it's really hard. I hate to do this on
(28:18):
October the second, but like it's hard. So it's a
huge game, very good opponent. You've got a quarterback take
in the field. I just I don't think Joe's the
kind of guy who says something if he's not feeling it.
He's taking the field thinking I've got to be perfect. Man.
It's hard to do anything anything when you are trying
(28:40):
to be perfect, or when you are doing it under
the pressure of having to be perfect. It's really hard.
If you said to me, for the next two hours
and fifteen minutes, you have to be perfect. Well, first
of all, that's asking way too much of somebody who
I can't be perfect for two minutes, much less two
hours and fifteen I'm not going to do a very
(29:02):
good job. That's going to be weighing on me. You know.
It's like remember you see in the college football playoff
year twenty twenty one. Now, because I can have fun
with anything. I had fun that year, but you know,
there were times where I was watching, you know, other fans,
(29:22):
listening to other fans, and getting social media posts from
other fans who were anxious about style points and they're
not winning by enough. And there were times that year
where I felt like, offensively, a very good team was
not wilting but burden to buy the pressure of we
(29:44):
can't just win. We've got to beat everybody by eight touchdowns,
we can't leave any doubt. We've got to cover every spread.
We've got to wallop everybody. Because as a group of
five school they were held to a different standard than
everybody else, and I I think it impacted that team's performance.
Not The good news is the team was good enough
to overcome it. The team had a very good defense,
(30:06):
team had enough high end players on offense, and they
were playing in the American Athletic Conference. But if you're
a Bearcat fin you know what that season was like.
And there were times, and I talked about this with
Desmond River once, like you guys are taking the field
and it feels like, God, you know what, it's third
and eight. If we don't convert here up by seven
points in the first quarter omg instead of winning by
(30:28):
seventeen points, we're gonna win by ten and oh no,
that's gonna cost us. With polsters like hard, it's a
hard way to play. I think that team that year
offensively had a hard time dealing with that because they
were aiming for something that's not attainable. They were aiming
for perfection. I think it's hard to ask a quarterback
(30:49):
to aim for perfection. I think it's hard to ask
an offense to aim for perfection. So I gave you
good news at the top of the hour. The good
news is this offense is clicking right now and they
are pass protection has been great, The offensive line play
has been more than adequate, much more than adequate. They've
got two running backs that I feel like they know
(31:09):
what to do with. They've got tight ends after tight
ends after tight ends. They've got my guy Eric All,
who's probably gonna be a Hall of Famer one day.
Jamar Chase is starting to do Jamar Chase things. T
Higgins had a good game. They prioritize Timo. The offense,
there's a lot that they can do. They've scored eight
touchdowns over the last two weeks. There's a lot to like.
(31:30):
But that is gonna cave if weekend and week out
that unit takes the field feeling like we've got to
be perfect. Think about it against Washington, that unit knew
it had to score a touchdown every single time. That's
a hard way to play.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
Man.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
When they lost that game, that's a hard way to play.
So it might be good enough to win on Sunday.
Maybe they are perfect. Maybe they score every time, Maybe
they get a key stop, Maybe they there's an opportunistic
play on defense. Maybe the return of so many of
the guys that they haven't had helps against Derek Henry
and Lamar Jackson in company. But if the blueprint this
(32:10):
year is ask the offense to lift up the defense,
I think that's sustainable. If it's the defense sucks so
bad that the offense has to play a perfect game.
Never punt, never turn it over on downs, and commit
no turnovers via interception or fumble, that ain't gonna work.
I thought that comment from Joe Burrow was interesting. Eleven
(32:33):
away from four o'clock our phone. Can't we script him
to be perfect? Terrn, you make a very good point.
That's right. If it's gonna be wrestling shouldn't they. By
the way, tonight I'm watching the Vince McMahon doc. I
got nothing going on to night. I'm gonna watch them
at least the first part. But yeah, if it's wrestling,
they should script. They should script the game to allow
(32:55):
the Bengals to be two and three and jump into
the mix like where your head is? Taran ten away
from four o'clock, Terrence had something to interesting to me
today about the Bengals on defense that we're going to
get to coming up in the four o'clock hour. Five
point three seven four nine, fifteen thirty is our phone number.
By the way, we're broadcasting from the Madewell Restoration studios.
(33:17):
Obviously this weekend a lot of storm damage in the area.
Hopefully your homes okay, if you're dealing with any roof problems,
dealing with anything on your homes exterior. Uh I mean
this because I know what kind of work these guys
could do. Go to Maidwell Restoration dot com, Madwell Restoration
dot com. Uh, rat's got some bad news today and
(33:38):
it has nothing to do with their manager. We're going
to get to that and a tale of four different
Pete Rose emails. My emails prove a point. That coming
up in the four o'clock hour as well on ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
This, Hey, Alexa, what's the latest on.
Speaker 10 (33:54):
The NBA getting ESPN?
Speaker 2 (33:56):
I think that was from iHeartRadio. Oh yes, that's right, Karen,
Thank you very much. By lot going on in sports.
I was in Lubock, Texas on Friday night when I
saw that we got Karl Anthony Towns and there's a
lot of Knicks fans who aren't happy about this, but
I am. I think we upgraded. Thank you. I was
(34:17):
gonna say, I think Dave Justice's wife was named Judy Justice,
the wife after Halle Berry. It's coming up on four o'clock.
Co Owgord. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports Station this.
Speaker 13 (34:30):
Week and Dave laphaman me for Bengals game plan tonight
starting at six on the official home of the Bengals,
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
That's right, and night, it's my ride home. This is
ESPN fifteen thirty at Greens Oakley Greens is that is
a great place. That is an awesome place, combines a
little mini golf, beer, sliders are good. It's a good spot,
Oakley Greens. We took our daughter there the night before
(35:03):
school started for like a night before school starts date.
That was that is a great place on ice cream,
Oakley Greens. Man, sign me up for that now, I
might go. It's a cool place to watch games two,
great place to hang out with your buddies. Good date,
night spot. I'm jealous. Not that we don't broadcast from
great places. Hoard and Lap get to broadcast from Oakley
(35:25):
Greens tonight. I may have just changed my Wednesday plans.
I might join them, might heckle them. I don't know.
We'll see six after four. ESPN fifteen thirty on Oegger.
I was about to say Brenhanvan to Jones on baseball,
but that's over. There is daytime baseball. By the way,
I'm watching the Astros Tigers. It's Game two. It's scoreless.
(35:46):
They're in the bottom of the fifth inning. Houston needs
to win to force a game three. I love this format.
I don't like how, and I think I'm in the
majority here. I don't like how the regular season has
been watered down a little bit more than it already was.
We're giving owners incentive to aim for eighty seven wins
instead of like ninety seven or one hundred and two.
(36:10):
But once we get to the postseason and there's a
clear advantage for having one of the best two records
in your league, I think that's great. I think it's
great that on day two we have elimination games. We've
gotten rid of the one game playoff, which I liked,
but I understand it's one hundred and six two game
season comes down to one game. We're not we shouldn't
do best of five here. We don't need the best
(36:31):
of three. Let's go and if you don't want to
be in it, then be better and skip the first round.
But anyway, I'm watching like I work in an industry,
not a company as much an industry where we will
put an AD on anything anything, So I'm I'm not
anti AD. I'm not anti intrusive AD. I've long reconciled
(36:58):
myself with uniform patches. That stuff doesn't bother me. But
for some reason, the corporate logo on the helmets of
the players in the postseason, which I guess is going
to extend to the regular season next year, that looks ugly.
I know I'll get used to it, but that looks ugly,
(37:21):
ugly Bengals and Ravens on Sunday good news. Trey Hendrickson
a dressed for practice. He was doing stuff in the
part that the media could watch. One of the experts
from Orthosincy, doctor John Fritch, is going to join us
to talk about Trey's next stinger coming up in just
about twenty five minutes. No Sheldon Rankins, but bj hillback,
(37:41):
Miles Murphy back from IR and McKinley Jackson as well.
So they're getting some good news, getting healthier in an
area where they've got to be healthier and where they've
got to be better. Let's get to what the Bengals
did in twenty twenty one here in just a second.
But I said I was going to do this last
hour and then we kind of ran over. We had
Joe Burrows press conference with for a while at least
(38:03):
a musical accompaniment, and I mentioned I was going to
do this, and I did not. Yesterday's show we as
you might expect if you're normal. We spent a lot
of time discussing Pete Rose, and you know it was
one of those things I'll take you just inside my
thought process. Here we found out about seven thirty on
(38:24):
Monday evening, and you know, I instantly started to think,
first of all, like, all right, how do I feel
about this? And then I started to think about the
show itself and like, we there is a quicker move
on factor in our business now than there was I
think twenty years ago. Where I think now, you know,
(38:49):
if you do a show like this, I think you
kind of feel like your audience is more willing to
move on quickly to whatever is next than it might
have been twenty years ago. I think that it's just
kind of a reflection of how we digest stuff, digest news,
and maybe have short attention spans. And so I'm thinking, like, God,
by three o'clock tomorrow afternoon, is it going to make
(39:11):
sense for me to go all Pete Rose all the time?
Do a few Pete Rose segments, get on a bunch
of guests. I'm not going to ignore it, of course,
but like how much do we do? And I'll be
honest with you, I wasn't necessarily comfortable with the segments
that I did because I went back and listened to him,
and I think you could hear me kind of trying
to walk a tight rope but I'm happy with the
(39:34):
amount of time we devoted to Pete Rose's passing, which
these shows are twelve segments four segments an hour, so
twelve segments. I did four and a half on Pete
Rose yesterday, and then the rest were about the Bengals
and other things. And I was pretty happy with that balance.
(39:58):
And look, I'm not stupid, and I'm willing to admit, like, well,
i am stupid, but I'm not dumb in this regard.
I get like yesterday, if you wanted water to wall
Pete Rose, there are places you very easily could have
gone and gotten it. And if you wanted know Pete Rose,
there were obviously things you could go consume that you
can go and get what you want. I was happy
with our balance, But I said at some point during
the show yesterday, this has always been a a not
(40:21):
Pete Rose's passing because it had never happened. But uh,
any Pete Rose topic has always been kind of hard
for me because it it feels like there's no room
for the middle anymore. And that's just kind of how
life is like there. It just it feels like in
the in the public discourse game, there's no room for
the middle, there's there's no there's there's no room for god.
(40:44):
I see it this way, but I also see it
this way. Or hey, let's let's make mention of this,
but on the opposite end, let's at least acknowledge this.
I don't think anybody wants to do that anymore. And
so with with Pete uh. I've always struggled with Rose
related topics because I understand his significance, and I understand
how much he means to people, and I understand what
(41:06):
he represents for a lot of people, and I understand
he means a lot to this city, and I understand
he represents a period of time that a lot of
people hold really really dear I said yesterday. I can
certainly empathize with anybody who might have lost a piece
of their youth yesterday. But also like there were a
lot of Pete Rose's behaviors that, first of all, were
why he was the figure post playing career that he was,
(41:30):
and some of those behaviors I thought subjected him to,
at least from my perspective, very fair criticism. And I've
always tried to thread the needle, sometimes very unsuccessfully and
occasionally successfully between celebrating his great career and acknowledging what
(41:51):
he means to people, and also acknowledging, like and I
talked about our interactions and having him on the show,
how good he can make you feel. Man, he was
a charmer. I was watching two clips of him on
The David Letterman Show last night, and it's like, this
guy was like legit, funny and likable. He would make
you like him. But then you know there was also
(42:12):
this the more you learned about him off the field,
the less you really wanted to know. And so I've
always kind of shied away from every really talking about Pete. Also,
there's an age thing here, right, Let's be honest. A
lot of people in our audience who didn't watch Pete Rose,
(42:33):
who only know him as the exiled baseball figure. There
are a lot of people who don't want to hear
about his baseball accomplish accomplishments at all. So to sort
of illustrate that you almost can't go right when you
talk about Pete. We had to talk about Pete yesterday
and I was pleased with the amount of time we
spent on him. And I shared a personal story or two,
(42:56):
and I focused on you know from a place of
authenticity this not being somebody that I grew up watching,
not being somebody that I thought was infallible. But man,
I know what he means to people. I know what
he meant to people. I know what it's like to
lose a part of your youth. We talked about the
Hall of Fame debate what to do with him in
the Hall of Fame moving forward, and I think my
(43:17):
take on that is pretty unpopular. But I just don't
see the point of changing the rule to put him in,
because I think it's hypocritical. I think it's almost cruel,
and I think Hall of Fame inductions are supposed to
be joyous occasions, and doing it when the guy's not here,
that doesn't make for a joyous occasion. It's funny. I've
got a lot of emails of it, like the last month,
(43:38):
which means I've got to get better at like responding
to him. And I do appreciate any correspondence. Uh So,
here's one email from Kevin, and Kevin said he appreciated
my comments and I'm paraphrasing all these here. Appreciated my
comments online and on air about Pete Rose. It hit
(44:02):
the right notes, So thank you, Kevin, appreciate you listening
and following. Then here's one from Mark, who said, uh
does bearcat stuff here that essentially the more I talked
about Pete Rose, the less interesting the show became. Thank
(44:25):
you for listening. Here's another one here from Unsigned, who
says didn't expect to hear the canonization of Pete Rose
on my show. There's no canonization, but thank you for listening.
I hope you stayed with it. And then here's another
one from Gil.
Speaker 3 (44:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
Uh. It's a long signature from Gil, who says that,
out of respect for his passing, we he could have
done without me, mentioning that I was unwilling to look
past his flaws. Four different emails, four different perspectives. One
basically says we talked too much Pete, one said we
(45:11):
didn't do enough. One says we were being too uh,
we were too filled with adoration for Pete, and the
other said we were unfair to him. That's why I've
barely talked about him up until yesterday, because you can't.
It's there's it's you can't. You can't. So yesterday was uh.
(45:32):
I the Reds tribute video they put on social media.
Was just awesome. U. The Dan Patrick interview with Johnny
Bench that went viral yesterday. I watched that this morning.
That was terrific. You could tell Johnny is deeply saddened
by somebody who's always going to be connected with, someone
who you know, was often talked about being at odds with,
(45:55):
and he addressed that. You you could tell he was
hit hard by Pete's past, and you might understand why
if you know anything about those two. I just I
think a lot of the things that have been written
and said about Pete have been interesting to consume. And
we did our best yesterday, and I'm okay with the
time that we devoted. I'm not necessarily ever really happy
(46:16):
with my performance, but I thought we handled it appropriately
by the way. I think Tony and Austin did as well.
But it just goes to show when when he's the topic,
you're you're always going to piss someone off always, and
we probably did that yesterday too. Seventeen minutes after five o'clock.
(46:39):
Bengals cannot do what they did in twenty twenty one. Next, Yeah,
football in the Natti, Oh yeh want to you?
Speaker 1 (46:45):
In part by modern opus methods on the official Home
of the Lingles, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (46:52):
Joe Burrow says, he's got to be perfect. By the way,
you're not getting pulled over right now, don't worry. Terrence's
playing a Bubbaspark song with a siren and back. Just
if you're looking at that, well, there's no more sinking
feeling than that look in the rear view mirror and
there are those lights. And it's been many years since
that's happened to me, So I feel pretty good about that.
(47:14):
So you're not getting pulled over. So anyway, we've we've
talked about Joe Burrow. He says he has to play
perfect on Sunday. Bengals defense is not good, and it's
it's got a better chance of being better with bj Hill,
who's you know, practicing, and Miles Murphy who is practicing,
and I guess McKinley Jackson who is practicing, and certainly
if Trey Hendrickson is okay, they have a better chance
(47:37):
of improving. And so those those are good things. And
I do think lou An Arumo is a good defensive coordinator.
This is probably not going to be a great defense.
The good news is this year's team. If the offense
continues to play the way it has, it doesn't need
to be. But as we talk about fixing in it,
there's been a lot of focus on the draft. Tarren
and I were talking before the show and he goes,
(47:57):
you know, are they are they at developing players?
Speaker 8 (48:02):
Well?
Speaker 2 (48:03):
I mean they've they've they've had some players develop with them, right,
But yeah, I think the general thought applies. The general
question is worth asking when you look at specifically the defense.
It's not just boy, they've they've had some misses in
the draft. It's missus in the draft involving players they
(48:26):
took and thought they could develop. They haven't developed Joseph Osaigh.
Maybe that's not the Bengals fault entirely, but they drafted
Joseph Osai thinking we could get him to a place
where he's a productive player. That hasn't happened. Is it
on Joseph mostly? Is it on the Bengals not just
for taking him, but also for being unable, at least
(48:47):
to this point to get him to where they want
him to be. And you can apply this to a
few areas on the defense and look that the jury
is largely still out. I mean, Cam Taylor Brits in
a role that he's never been in him before. He's
he was obviously awful against Carolina. But we're not giving
up on Cam Taylor brid I'm not giving up on
Dax Hill or DJ Turner. I'm not giving up on
(49:09):
Jordan Battle. But the Bengals defense, we talked about this.
I think last week that if you looked at the
roster from twenty one, when the defense carries them to
the super Bowl with three excellent performances in the playoffs,
there's been a lot of turnover, a lot of guys
who are on that defense who are not here anymore.
But also, if you think about that stretch of time,
(49:33):
Burrow's under a rookie contract. So many of us emphasize
that at the time, gotta win while he's under a
rookie contract, because now is when you can throw money
at problems. Bengals defense was terrible in eighteen before Zach
took over, nineteen Zach's first season, and it was bad
(49:53):
burrows first season twenty twenty, But it was a little
bit better in twenty twenty because that was when they
they started throwing money at it. They were in such
a good financial position relative to the salary cap at
least that they could just they could just throw money
at any problem, right, and man, anything is easier when
(50:14):
you could just throw money at it, right, You just
you gotta bust it down.
Speaker 3 (50:18):
Car.
Speaker 2 (50:19):
You can just throw money at a new one, No
big deal. If you don't have the money to throw
it a new car, and you gotta figure out a
way to make the crappy car work, it's a lot harder.
So you know, you think about that time when Joe's
under a rookie did you could throw money at DJ Reader?
By the way, Dj Reader when he signed here was
the highest paid nose tackle ever, most money to a
(50:39):
free agent nose tackle ever. And critics of the Bengals said, well,
they overpaid, and they probably didn't. Now they got what
they were looking for, but they overpaid because they had to.
They needed better defensive players. The only thing they could
really throw at teams or throw it players was money.
They had to so they could throw money at DJ Reader,
(51:00):
and later on throw money at Trey Hendrickson, and throw
money at Von Bell, and throw money at Chenobie Woozier
and throw money at Mike Kelton and then acquire bj
Hill via trade because they had a guy that they
were not gonna keep. It could throw money at the problem.
That's not a criticism. It worked. How many of those
(51:22):
guys they acquired from other teams, Larry Ogunjobi DJ Reader,
Eli Apple, Von Bell, Mike Kelton, Hill, Trey Hendrickson, A
lot of guys acquired from other teams. Some are still here,
like Trey Hendrickson. Von Bell is back. But it was
a lot easier to fix the defense then, because it's
a lot easier to do anything when you could just
throw money at the problem. We talk about the Reds
(51:46):
all the time and what they're gonna spend. If let's
say Bob Castellini stumbled into ten billion dollars, guess what, Suddenly, boy,
they could throw money at anything. Not that they still can't,
but I think you get the point. Now things are different.
Burrow makes a huge chunk of dough. They're gonna pay
(52:07):
Jamar Chase, They're probably gonna keep investing in free agency
in the offensive line. They're gonna have to maybe not
four guys in one offseason, but they're gonna have to.
So I think you've kind of seen what they want.
The blueprint to be. For all the criticism they get
for not yet signing Jamar Chase, the smart money is
(52:27):
on them doing so. Spend on offense, draft and develop
on defense. Pay the big money dudes on offense, get
cheap labor, and develop it on defense. If that doesn't work,
they're gonna stink on defense every single year. So we
can cling to twenty twenty one. We can talk about
how the franchise is still to a degree running on
(52:48):
the fumes of twenty twenty one. The way they built
that defense, which by the way, can't carry them to
a championship or an AFC championship, I guess can't build
it the same way. Not that you can't find free as,
but like they spent, dude, and they spent wisely. There
aren't that many players they spent on who didn't come
here and help. But I remember this was in the
(53:12):
throes of COVID. I'm doing shows for my basement. It's
free agency. Bengals were not good the year before. They're
gonna take Burrow. They got a lot of money to spend.
They've got to find guys on defense, pay spend, and
some might say irresponsibly, I don't think you have a
choice when you are where the Bengals were back then,
(53:33):
but now things are different. So it really is one
of the central questions that I have moving forward with
the quarterback making the coin that he is. You could
find the dude on social media who says the salary
cap isn't real, buddy. It is with the financial challenges
that will come this franchise as well. And by the way, franchise,
(53:54):
the challenge is to the franchise that they can navigate.
I mean, if you can't navigate it, you don't sign
Burrow and you don't pay all the guys you go
to pay an offense, but they're spending a lot of
money on that offense. Okay, what they've tried to do
has to be something they succeed at doing. So hell yeah,
Jordan Battle better end up being a really good player.
(54:14):
Hell yeah, Cam Taylor brig better end up being a
really good player. And hell yeah, Chris Jenkins who made
a really nice play and fourth down on Sunday, better
end up being a really good player. Jackson McKinley better
end up being a really good player. Miles Murphy better
end up being a really good player. Because if they're not.
You can't just do what they did four years ago
and write a check. Fix it with money, fix it
(54:36):
with your riches. It doesn't work that way anymore. Got
to be drafting. It's got to be developing, developing. It's
got to be finding diamonds in the rough. It's got
to be getting good cheap labor. It's got to be
finding middle tier players, the kind of players that often
get squeezed out, that are getting squeezed out in the
league right now, and getting a lot out of them.
(54:58):
It's got to be hitting on guys like Logan Wilson,
Jermaine Pratt. It's got to be giving a guy like
Muma John Meta a chance and seeing what he can
give this team.
Speaker 3 (55:12):
It.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
It's it's not that they can't sign a free agent
here or there, but backbone of that defense four years ago,
dudes from elsewhere. That's probably not happening anymore. Not while
you're spending what you're spending on offense. Five point three

some stuff. Bj Hill back limited. Sheldon Rankins did not
practice today. Full go for McKinley Jackson and full go
as well for Miles Murphy. Those are good signs. Bengals
game plan tonight at six live on ESPN fifteen thirty.
(57:19):
The game at one o'clock. As you heard that guy
with the deep voice one o'clock Sunday pregame coverage Sunday
morning from the Holy Grail. Looking forward to that with
Tony Pike, ken Brew and ME Soccers in Nfccincinnati on
the road against New York. That game starts at seven
point thirty on Fox Sports thirteen to sixteen. Miles Robinson
has been added to the US men's national team roster
(57:41):
for International Camp baseball playoffs. Tigers lead The Astros won
nothing Houston batting in the bottom of the seventh inning.
It's a best of three series, so the Astros must
win to force a game three. They are threatening, though,
with two on and nobody out in the bottom of
the seventh inning, top of the first and balt More
Royals and Orioles scoreless. Mets and Brewers tonight with Milwaukee
(58:04):
down one at games at seven thirty. Braves Padres tonight
game two with San Diego up one OZHO. That game
starts at eight thirty. I'll tell you what I saw
on Saturday night. I saw Big twelve football team. I'll
expand upon that incredible thought coming up in just a
few But first, it's Wednesday, which means we talk injuries,
(58:27):
mainly NFL injuries with one of the experts from Orthos Since.
The great thing about Orthos sincey is they have specialists
and locations across the Tri State and they offer walk
in orthopedic urgent care weekdays from nine am to nine
pm and Saturdays nine am to one pm. Learn more
at Orthosinc dot com. That's Orthos ci NCY dot com.
(58:48):
Doctor Fritz. Let me start with Trey Hendrickson. So he
suffered what they call a stinger on Sunday, and he's
walking off the field on his own power. But he
had this facial depression that looked like a half cry
and a half guy in agony. He looked like he
was in some pain. After the game, it's reported his
(59:09):
arm is in a sling. He is back and he's
at least doing some practice work, which is a good thing.
But let's start with this. What's a next stinger?
Speaker 3 (59:17):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, I was watching the same thing myself,
and yeah, the look on his face made me a
little worried, but after they said it was a stinger,
a little more reassuring. So stingers are pretty common injuries
in football, usually a direct below the shoulder, the stretch
injury to the nerves as they exit your neck and
go into your arm, and it caused sort of this
(59:38):
temporary numbness, tingling, burning, stinging, that's what I would call it.
A stinger usually resolves after a few minutes, but it
can last a little longer sometimes, And so fortunately, if
that's what he was dealing with, we should hopefully see
him back and play here soon.
Speaker 2 (59:55):
Are there different levels or grades of stingers, not that
I I'm aware of.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
We don't have any particular grating process. It's just in
the vast majority of them do resolve quickly, but certain
ones we've seen where they can have some residual symptoms
for a few days and can take a little longer resolve,
particularly with the weakness and with these types of injuries,
usually with a high level athlete like Gray. We don't
(01:00:22):
want him back playing until he's back to normal, until
it may just take him a little while.
Speaker 2 (01:00:27):
Are there ever instances where a stinger turns into something
maybe a little bit more severe.
Speaker 3 (01:00:33):
Not that I've personally encountered, but certainly anytime you're dealing
with the NAC you worry, Hey, is this a more
serious injury? Is this contusion to the spinal cord? Is
this a contusion to the breachial plexus, which is the
network of nerves that go into your arm. Is this
a discarnation in the neck? Those would be things to
look into if he doesn't resolve, But based on what
(01:00:57):
I've heard so far, sounds like it's thinking right now.
Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
One more as it relates to this, Why would his
arm be in a sling if he's dealing with a
neck injury.
Speaker 3 (01:01:07):
Yeah, And so initially, when you first have a stinger,
those nerves aren't working right as they're going into your hand,
and it can cost some weakness so that you're not
able to hold your arm up even And so my
guess is they put them into a sling for comfort purposes,
because when you can't hold your arm up because of weakness,
it's kind of uncomfortable to kind of drag along with you,
so they may have just put him in a sling
(01:01:27):
temporarily until his arm wokes back up.
Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
There was a scary injury in the game involving Denver
in the New York Jets. Bronco's running back Tyler Bidet
gets tackled, fumbles the football that's neither here nor there,
and he leaves the field unto his own power, and
then he falls down on the sideline. He collapses, had
full movement of his extremities, but he's taken off the
field on a stretcher. There was no official diagnosis immediately
(01:01:54):
after the game. Walk me through the range of possibilities
that we're dealing with here when it comes to an
injury that initially he could walk off the field on
his own power through and then ultimately had him coming
off on a stretcher.
Speaker 16 (01:02:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:02:08):
Absolutely, So I'm gonna have to speculate a little bit here.
The fact that he was moving his arms and legs
is reassuring that hopefully no spinal cord injury. Obviously, that's
the devastating thing, and we want to be sure he's
not dealing with that. But I mean, in the wide
range of things that could have happened to him, he
could have had a bad contusion to the back or
a big bruise. Essentially, could have had a back fracture.
(01:02:31):
I certainly hope not, but based on his position and
things going on, it's a possibility could have had a
discarnation causing pain, or even a nerve injury. Other things,
his internal organs could have had some issues of bruises.
I mean, he could have had an injury to kidney
or something else, and something that the medical staff will
(01:02:53):
have to take a look at, could require further lab testing, imaging.
To roll a few things out, One more.
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
To ask you about Rashi Rice of the Kansas City Chiefs.
A tough injury for him and a tough injury for
that football team. So he was carted off the field
and Kansas City's went over the LA Chargers, and the
fear was immediately after the game that he has suffered
a season ending ACL tear. It was reported on Monday
that maybe the injury is not quite as severe as
(01:03:20):
everybody originally feared, but obviously he is still expected to
miss an extended period of time. ACL tear seems to
me to be pretty cut and dry, So why is
there uncertainty here?
Speaker 3 (01:03:32):
Yeah, yeah, it was a little unusual and it's particular case,
especially after seeing the footage. Certainly an injury worriesome for
an ACL tear usually, so ACL tears are definitively diagnosed
on MRI. My guess is he got an initial examination
after an ACL tear, you can feel a little extra
(01:03:53):
play or looseness, but that exam isn't always one hundred
percent conclusive, and so we get the MRI they kind
of confirm that the ACL is torn or if there's
another injury going on.
Speaker 2 (01:04:06):
So could the delay in figuring out specifically what the
injury is impact the treatment and what's next.
Speaker 3 (01:04:13):
Certainly, but I think they should have definitive answers within
the scope of a few days. And so once he
does get an MRI and enough people have sort of
taken a look at it and offered their opinion, I
think they should hopefully have a great idea from the
MRI itself. Hey, is this an ACL pair or not?
Usually you can see on the MRI directly if those
(01:04:35):
fibers are stretched out of the ligament, where if they're torn,
Also with an actual ACL tear, there's usually associated injury
patterns on the imaging findings, so you'll see other subtle
hints that the ACL is torn, like a particular bone
bruising pattern that can clee in. If that's not present,
then maybe they can rehab them a little sooner. If
(01:04:55):
they're assuming it's an ACL.
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
Spring makes sense. Awesome inside of as always, doctor John Fridge,
Orthos Sinsey, I appreciate the time in Thank you so much.
As always, Hey, thanks for having me on MO anytime.
Thank you doctor John Fridge from Orthos since they are awesome.
You know, I took my Betty year ago my daughter

Thirty May, Hollywood Casino, Lawrence Dave laphaman me for Bengals
game plan tonight starting at six on the official home
of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
Hey, we have time to do the show now. This
is typically where you would have Brennaman and Jones on baseball,
but now know Brenneman and Jones on baseball instead. You're
stuck with me. Five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty.
Steve Cangelosi MLS, Apple TV is going to join us
at five five. Richard Skinner on the Bengals at five twenty,
(01:06:26):
and uh, Darren Horn, the head coach of the Norse
NKU is an awesome event tomorrow night that involves two
of my favorite things, basketball and ice cream. I mean, legitimately,
you take those two things and I'm pretty happy. Basketball
and ice cream. Anyway, I was just thinking about ice cream.
(01:06:46):
Darren's going to join us. Coach Horn is going to
join us at five thirty five. I said this before
we talked with Doctor Fridge, and I know I know
what happens when the team loses. If you try, if
you try to put it in its context, you know,
folks accuse you of a like moral victories. I don't
believe in moral victories. I believe in context. I said
(01:07:08):
that after the Bengals lost to the Kansas City Chiefs
that within that framework of that loss, which was deeply frustrating,
I saw our quarterback who was healthy. I saw a
quarterback who was comfortable. That made me feel better. I
didn't feel good about the results of the game, and
there were lots of things that led to the results
of the game that were worth picking apart. But I
believe in context. Saturday night, you see lost a game
(01:07:31):
deeply frustrating, deeply frustrating to have the final drive with
a chance to tie or win not really get completed
because you had two ten second runoffs, and then you
lost a bunch of time because you had a player
get hurt and when he left, the other team got
a chance to sub with the clock still running. But look,
they gave up forty four points. He can't give up
(01:07:52):
forty four points. Brendan Sorosby had not thrown a pick
and close to one hundred and fifty pass attempts, then
he throws one. It's a picks at precisely the worst time.
You got to take advantage of situations like the end
of the first half on Saturday night when they had
a touchdown lead, chance to get off the field, get
the football back right before the halftime period otherwise known
(01:08:15):
as halftime. Go in up two scores and get the
ball to start the second half. You can't fumble the
football in your first drive of the second half. Got
to be better defensively. But I said this on Monday,
and we didn't get a chance to spend maybe as
much time on the Bearcat game as I would have
liked because of everything happening with the Bengals. But I
(01:08:35):
said toward the end of our conversation Tony and I
that I saw a big twelve football team on Saturday.
Now understand this. You see, last year they won a
Big twelve football game. They had a handful of others
where they played okay. For the most part, I didn't
feel like I was watching a big twelve football team,
(01:09:00):
watching a big twelve quarterback, a high caliber, big twelve quarterback.
I was watching a big twelve offensive line, but I
wasn't watching you know, big twelve skill guys. They didn't
have a big twelve tight end. They really didn't have
big twelve running backs, not a lot of big twelve
guys on defense. So when last year ended and we
(01:09:21):
started to talk about this season, I said this verbatim,
and I wish I knew when I said it, because
I'd go and get it. My take was, we're going
to talk about wins and losses in twenty twenty four,
and clearly there has to be more wins. Obviously, the
main target is going to be Bowl eligibility, but they've
(01:09:41):
got to be more respectable than what they were in
Scott Sadderfield's first season. But the first step is I
need to see a big twelve football team. And I'm
really not going to know if I'm seeing a big
twelve football team until they play a legitimate big twelve team.
Apologies to Houston, who they beat two weeks ago, so
that's not a big twelve football team. You see shut
(01:10:03):
them out. Then the Cougars got shut out the next
game against Iowa State in Houston. I'm not here to
tell you that Texas Tech is great, although they have
some really good offensive pieces and NFL running back, lots
of skilled dudes on the outside. I saw a big
twelve team. So before you could really get into the
(01:10:25):
weeds of how they're gonna do in the conference, do
they look like a big twelve team? And you could
say yes for the most part after watching them in
their first four games, but you really weren't gonna get
that answer until Saturday night. That doesn't mean that you
should feel great about the result, by the way, the
injury situation and there won't be any updates this week
because there's no game. They were short at wide receiver
(01:10:46):
on Saturday. They were short, They became shorter at defensive
tackle nose tackle with Cam Rutherford's absence, and I thought
they were gonna have to pull like someone out of
the stands to play running back. On Saturday. That beaten up,
that decimated And so what that means moving forward is
going to be interesting. And none of this guarantees they
beat UCF. But before we talked about how they're going
to do in conference play, show me that you're a
(01:11:08):
big twelve football team that looked and felt like a
legit Big Twelve Football game on Saturday. That was the
first thing they had to check off. They've got Big
twelve football players. This is a better team than last year's.
And I don't just say that because they've already won
as many games as they did a season ago. They
look more of the part. Do they look like an
(01:11:29):
elite Big twelve team?
Speaker 8 (01:11:30):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:11:31):
Do they look like a team that can win the
Big Twelve.
Speaker 8 (01:11:33):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:11:34):
Do they look like a college football playoff team? Not
even close. They look like a Big twelve team. They
look like a team that could win games in this conference.
Go in the road, score forty one points. Hated how
the end of the first half unfolded. Hated that they
gave up an early eleven point lead. Loved the fact
that they came back from down fourteen And who knows
(01:11:54):
if they don't have two runoffs and then the fifteen
second loss when Covey got hurt and took himself out
of the game. Maybe they get in a closer field
goal range. Maybe they take the lead and win the
football game. That's not moral victory, that's context. Look at
last year, that's the context. Look at the league they're in,
(01:12:17):
that's the context. Might not be a big Scott Sadurfield believer. Fine,
he's gonna have to earn that. But what I do
think he has done is put together a roster, along
with the general manager, Zach Graham, put together a roster
that looks the part that had to happen first before
you could ever come close to talk about them winning
(01:12:38):
football games. I saw what I wanted to see from
that standpoint on Saturday, even if I wasn't thrilled with
the result. A couple of the way from five o'clock,
Joe Burrow says he has to be perfect. In fact,
you'll hear him say he has to be perfect. That
coming up in just a bit. And FC Cincinnati's on
(01:12:58):
the road tonight after a dis pointing loss. Injuries have
ravaged this team. What do we expect in the New
York area tonight? We'll go there at five oh five
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports.
Speaker 4 (01:13:08):
Station Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from.
Speaker 6 (01:13:15):
The UC Health Traffic Center as the only Level one
trauma center in the region. You see, help is setting
the national standard for emergency care and preparedness with new
additions to the er chose U see health when you
need expert care. We've got some slower traffic that's causing
a couple minute delay on northbound seventy five between two
seventy five in Ohio and Union Center Boulevard. And there's
(01:13:35):
a five minute delay due to an accident that's on
the left shoulder of westbound seventy four before two to
seventy five. Traffic is moving slow from Harrison Avenue. I'm
nicole with traffic.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
The Bengals Wrestle with the Ravens coverage starts Sunday morning
at nine on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of
the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
All right, it's five oh five. This is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Good afternoon on Muwegger. Richard Skinner on the Bengals in
fifteen minutes from Local twelve. Busy day for them. Joe
Burrow says he has to be perfect on Sunday, which
I think is kind of interesting. We'll spend some time
on that. Darren Horne's going to join us at five
thirty five, head coach of the NKU Norris by the way,
(01:14:16):
Detroit has taken a five to two lead top of
the eighth inning and still batting with a guy on
third base, Game two of that American League Wild Card Series,
Tiger's trying to close out the Houston Astros. FC Cincinnati
plays tonight the Orange and Blue trying to bounce back
after kind of a weird game against La, where La,
because of coming off the US Open Cup win benched
(01:14:39):
a lot of their starters and then played him toward
the end and closed out FC Cincinnati and it was
lost the game at a cost because they have fallen
to third in the Eastern Conference table. The game tonight
is being played at the Red Bull Stadium because of
contingencies in case either the Mets or Yankees played in
the postseason, so a little bit of a different venue,
different vibe. Possible playoff preview seven thirty tonight watching on
(01:15:01):
Apple TV as part of MLS Season Pass, where our
friend Steve Canzelosi has the call. It is always good
to have you, sir. How are you.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):
Good afternoon, mo.
Speaker 11 (01:15:11):
Yeah, this could be.
Speaker 2 (01:15:11):
A playoff preview.
Speaker 4 (01:15:12):
It could be a two to seven matchup, it could
be a three to six matchup in the Eastern Conference.
We'll see where we are on decision day. And you
mentioned all of the baseball that's going on. This game
is going on opposite the Mets playoff game that's being
played primetime in New York, So it's a Wednesday night.
The New York City fans really don't enjoy coming across
(01:15:35):
the river to the Red Bulls home to watch.
Speaker 8 (01:15:37):
Their team play.
Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
All of this could lead to a sparse crowd tonight,
which might take away some of the home field advantage
for New York City to see it well.
Speaker 2 (01:15:45):
And it's a it's a venue where FC Cincinnati had
a memorable result in the postseason last year. And so
a lot of different dynamics start with New York's team
because they've they've sort of fallen off a little bit
relative to what they were earlier and in the middle
part of the season. What has gone wrong?
Speaker 4 (01:16:03):
So they've fallen off, and yet they come off the
biggest win of their season. They played in this stadium
Saturday night as the road team and dismantled the Red
Bulls five to one, the most lopsided defeat that the
Red Bulls had suffered in this stadium since the brand
change back in two thousand and six and moving into
(01:16:25):
the stadium in twenty ten. So make no mistake, this
is a team that was winless in nine prior to that,
and I understand the nature of your question certainly, but
they took a giant step forward with what they did,
being so clinical in the box on Saturday night and also.
Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
Beating the Red Bulls at their own game.
Speaker 4 (01:16:45):
The Red Bulls are known for that high press, and
New York City came into their place and they beat
them in their style and a resounding win that they
think not only clinched a playoff berth for them, which
it did mathematically by the time the dust settled on
Saturday night, but they believe puts them on the right path.
Speaker 16 (01:17:04):
It's been a.
Speaker 4 (01:17:05):
Long, arduous process for them to get it right, but
right now, make no mistake, they're in a very good
place with one of the most I guess productive strikers
in the league in Alonzo Martinez, who scored fourteen goals
and the man hasn't played thirteen hundred minutes yet this season,
So there's one guy in the whole league with a
(01:17:26):
better goals per ninety ratio than Alonzo Martinez. He plays
in Miami. His initials are.
Speaker 2 (01:17:31):
La, so it's kind of interesting you mentioned Miami. I
think all season long in the Eastern Conference. We've talked
about really the big three Miami, Columbus, Cincinnati, and maybe
not in that order, maybe in that order, but it's
it's sort of been those three and then everybody else.
Would you would you start to include New York in
(01:17:51):
that conversation?
Speaker 4 (01:17:53):
No, No, to me, there's a separation after the first
two inner Miami and Columbus. Now, well, where does Cincinnati
enter that conversation? Rightly, So, if you're going to expand
the list to three, of course it's FC Cincinnati. They
are the reigning supporter shield winners in MLS, and I
still think they're going to get this right by the
(01:18:14):
time the postseason comes along. So to me, you either
separate the top two or the top three at most
before you get to the end of that pack. Now, look, postseason,
MLS have been around this league too long not to
know anything can happen. Numerous curve balls will undoubtedly take
place in the postseason, and I can't tell you with
(01:18:35):
any definitiveness whether or not Cincinnati will be in the middle.
Speaker 8 (01:18:38):
Of any of that at all.
Speaker 4 (01:18:40):
I do think that what's important for them starting tonight
is to play a smarter game. Some things are out
of your control. They've been snake bitten by injuries. We
know that Chindo Awazim is the latest. You won't play tonight,
but you can't give the ball away as they did
against LAFC on Saturday night and some of the culprits
on Saturday. By the way, Moe, we're among their most
(01:19:02):
reliable players, Lucio Acosta and Albino Wolbado. That has to
be rectified tonight to put them in the right place.
One other thing about this race that I think is important,
because I spoke to.
Speaker 8 (01:19:13):
Pat Noonan about this yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:19:15):
He said, look, the reality is we're finishing either second
or third, all right, We're not winning the conference. That's
kind of out of our hands. And it's gonna take
a lot from Miami to blow this. One of the
things he's happy about is the difficulty of the schedule here,
which is New York City tonight, a tough one on
Saturday against Orlando City, and then they play against Philadelphia
(01:19:37):
on Decision Day, which might be playing for its life.
He said, you know something, Let's play tough games. Let's
get ourselves playoff ready. That'll put us in the best
place once November comes around.
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
Yeah, that's well, put, I've got about a minute here.
You've been on this show before. I think the first
time you were ever on with me, I had found
out you were a Reds fan growing up on the
East Coast. Boy, you're on a Cincinnati radio station. Let's
talk about Pete Rose.
Speaker 8 (01:20:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:20:05):
Pete was my guy.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
He was the nineteen seventy three MVP.
Speaker 4 (01:20:11):
He meant everything to me when playing the Yankees in
the World Series in nineteen seventy six when Cincinnati dismantled
the Bronx Bombers. Now, imagine living in New York City
as I did, and I'm dating myself here.
Speaker 2 (01:20:25):
I don't care.
Speaker 5 (01:20:26):
I was a twelve year old kid.
Speaker 1 (01:20:28):
But to me, when you're a little.
Speaker 4 (01:20:30):
Kid as I was back then, you're seduced by hitting.
And there was no better hitting team in baseball at
the time than the Big Red Machine. And Rose was
the catalyst for so much of that. In later years
as a professional, I got to interview him. This was
long after he was banned from baseball and ruled ineligible
(01:20:51):
for the Baseball Hall of.
Speaker 3 (01:20:52):
Fame, among other things.
Speaker 11 (01:20:53):
I remember on camera.
Speaker 8 (01:20:55):
We had a wonderful forty.
Speaker 4 (01:20:56):
Five minute chat. It was adversarial times, but I think
he spoke from the heart.
Speaker 2 (01:21:03):
I'll put it this way.
Speaker 4 (01:21:05):
We lost Willie Mays and Pete Rose in the same year.
That's a lot for people who love the history of
game like me to absorb. They're a Hall of famers,
and then they are giants of the game. Pete Rose
was a giant of the game.
Speaker 2 (01:21:22):
That's that's also very well put. I know you have
a game to call in about two hours. We'll let
you get to it. Always love having you, man, Thanks.
Speaker 8 (01:21:29):
So much anytime.
Speaker 11 (01:21:31):
Good afternoon to you, Bye bye.
Speaker 2 (01:21:32):
Likewise, that's a Steve Cangelosi, the voice. Tonight's FC Cincinnati
Tilt MLS season pass Apple TV starts at seven thirty tonight.
Of course, radio coverage this evening on Fox Sports thirteen
sixty a match for the Orange and Blue as at
least hold on the hopes of getting back into the
(01:21:53):
second spot in the Eastern Conference. It is thirteen minutes
after five o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty Edgard's the bud
Light five o'clock Happy Hour. Thanks to our friends at
bud Light. One of those sounds amazing right now. It's
it's gorgeous outside. We have obviously had a lot of
like overcast, gloomy, windy, rainy, gnarly lookin days. Power has
(01:22:16):
been out today looks nice. Celebrate with a nice cold
bud light. Hopefully the Bengals celebrate on Sunday by beating
the Baltimore Ravens. How do they do it? Richard Skinner
from Local twelve tells us next on ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:22:31):
This is football in Thennetti run to you in part
by blood Light and by Skyline Shilly on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty five twenty.
Speaker 2 (01:22:43):
On Wednesdays, we chat with our friend Richard Skinner from
Local twelve and Local twelve dot com and X at
Local twelve. Skinny, he's with us now. He's been busy.
How's it going.
Speaker 8 (01:22:57):
I'm good, mo, how are you?
Speaker 2 (01:22:58):
And I'm wonderful. I'm wonderful, got all these players coming
back from injury. I couldn't be more excited. Bengals are
underdogs at home on Sunday. The offense is cooking. I'm
more optimistic than most.
Speaker 8 (01:23:11):
That's a fair point. I mean, listen, I'm sure you
watch the Sunday night game like we all did. That
offense on Sunday night was ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (01:23:21):
It was almost, for a.
Speaker 8 (01:23:22):
Period of time, indefensible. It was you want to run
between the tackles, Sure, you want to run a readouts,
Sure you want to run yes, still on the counter.
Sure you want to say they can throw a tight
end behind the first level or you know, name a
wide receiver, the zay Flowers, whomever. Sure, And I just
(01:23:43):
I was, I was really stupefied by it.
Speaker 2 (01:23:46):
Yeah, it's league is a weird week.
Speaker 8 (01:23:48):
It's a weird league, mo. I mean, that's the part
of it. And the flip side is the Bengals offense
is cooking at the moment. And I book to that
is they scored what's seventy what sixty seven points in
two weeks?
Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
Sixty seven points, yes, in.
Speaker 8 (01:24:03):
Two weeks, and I think they've less of stuff on
the field on top of that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
Yeah, Bill.
Speaker 8 (01:24:10):
Grew up. Listen, if you give me the old day
of give me a twenty seventeen win and I'm good,
we ain't there. But give me a thirty eight to
thirty five game up live with that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:20):
You know what's interesting though, is I mean you are
right the Baltimore offense on Saturday. For those who didn't
see a lot of folks saw Derrick Henry's long run
eighty seven yards. Okay, fine, looked at the yardage total,
saw what he did per carry, But it was the
variety of ways they got him the football. It was
the variety of things they did. And when defensively you're
(01:24:41):
having a hard time doing the basics, that to me
is what is what makes the is what gives me
some apprehension because it wasn't just them lining up and
running people over. It was they were using some creativity.
And now on Sunday in Cincinnati, Baltimore gets a defense
that it feels like they can't do the basics.
Speaker 8 (01:24:59):
That said, and I injuries are never an excuse, but
at times they are an excuse.
Speaker 15 (01:25:04):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:25:04):
You know, Zach Carter and J two faila God bless
them on a purple plum day. If everybody that was
supposed to be in your defensive tackle rotation was healthy,
those guys are being active and so you played literally
to inactive guys, and they've kind of played like to
an active two active guys like inactive literally in the
moment J to Bailey, probably not as.
Speaker 3 (01:25:22):
Much as Zach Carter.
Speaker 8 (01:25:25):
But when BJ Hill and Cholon Rangkments are in your lineup.
In the first two games, your defense was good. Give
up thirteen points to New England three because of the
Charlie Jones fumble, so we'll take that out of the mix.
Give up nineteen to Kansas City and they're not as
dynamic as they've been, but it's still Patrick Mahomes in
Kansas City. But the others in the score. And you're
not getting Shoonan Ranks back this week. In my opinion,
(01:25:45):
he gets close. But I'll talk to BJ in the
locker room. He practiced, he said it went well. He
feels like he's gonna play on Sunday. That's a positive sign.
I do think Miles Murphy's probably trending to play more
than McKinley Jackson, just because McKinley didn't He didn't really
have much of a training camp. I think he had
three practices something like that. And while he was full
(01:26:06):
today and Miles was full, I just don't know if
McKinley's trending in that direction. If he does, were good,
so you're getting some pieces back that you desperately need,
and I do think that has been a big reason
until it red hitting a wound slump. Those are the
two things I.
Speaker 2 (01:26:24):
Can think to How how long is the cam Taylor
britt leash on Sunday.
Speaker 8 (01:26:30):
I don't think it's.
Speaker 3 (01:26:30):
Long, and it couldn't be.
Speaker 8 (01:26:33):
And I think the most clean Sunday he the leash
wasn't long there either. And you know, maybe this is
a kid that looks and says, you know, I'm my
discipline is it where it needs to be. I'm trying
to bait guys that it looks like God, if he's
trying to bait guys into interceptions like I'm gonna give
this guy a release and I'm fast enough you want
(01:26:54):
to try to throw it over my head, good luck
to you, because gott catch up intercepted. I mean even
even the one he intercept it on the one he
got called for a holding family for that's kind of
what it looked like. And then he did pick it
off and he's like, no, don't think you'll be positive
reinforcement here, my guy. You're getting beat because you're trying
to cheat the game. When he plays will gain the
(01:27:17):
right way, the way he's supposed to play, the way
he's supposed play. Fundamentally, he's a really good quarner. I
just think some of that's gotten away from him for
whatever reason. That is, maybe the Kansas City one handed
in interception made him go, I can do anything you
can in the moment, but you don't want those moments
to be few and far between. You want to be
sound and solid. And when he sounded solid, they're not
(01:27:38):
even going to a side cast side. So I do
think that it's just a mini slump. I really believe that.
But if for whatever reason he starts to struggles, there's
no reason to leave the lea slump because I got
DJ Turner play pretty good on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:27:52):
Yeah, you know, there are a lot of folks who
in the in the secondary. I want to see some
some Jordan battle and I don't feel like we're that
much closer to seeing them.
Speaker 16 (01:28:00):
I wrong, No, No, you're not wrong.
Speaker 3 (01:28:04):
But I do think this.
Speaker 8 (01:28:05):
I think Jordane's a smart enough kid. I think he's
gonna finally that it's gonna click that. Okay, this is
what I need to do.
Speaker 16 (01:28:13):
This is what a pro does.
Speaker 8 (01:28:14):
This is what a pro does to get ready physically, mentally,
all those things I'm watching Von Bell do it, and
I'm watching von I'm gonna say this in a playway.
I'm watching old man Von Bell, who really doesn't have
a lot left in the tank, do it and try
to do it to the highest degree. And if you
can't respect the way he prepares for a game, well
then you're just dumb. And I don't think Jordan is.
(01:28:34):
I think Jordan sees that and realizes this is what
a pro does to prepare. This is what they're asking
me to do. And if I want to get on
the field, and chances are because Vaughn is a little
bit long in the tooth, and I think you would
agree with that watching him play, this is how I'm
gonna get on the field. And if he doesn't, well,
then shame on him. And I just don't think it'll
(01:28:55):
be a shame on him moment. But to your point, yeah,
I don't think it's not think it's gonna be anytime soon,
barring injury.
Speaker 2 (01:29:01):
Of course, over under a number of Pro Bowls, Eric
All makes I'll Saturday at eight and a half, you
go it over under.
Speaker 8 (01:29:08):
I'm going under, but not by much. It's funny. I
talked to him today for a bit and I'm gonna
do a story on him on Thursday. I think he
has been This is gonna sound like an overstatement, and
it probably is. This is this hyper bowl, it's it's finest.
I think he's been the key to unlocking this offense
in many ways, from run blocking to the versatility of
(01:29:28):
where you can put him, to his past catching ability.
I think it's unlocked a lot of different things for
this offense. And this was a guy I thought when
they drafted him, and I mean that, I thought he
was a redshirt year for him, Like, hey, good pick
I get it. Fourth round tight end, you got a
kind of a tight you got a crowded tight end room.
Speaker 3 (01:29:44):
Do you really don't need him?
Speaker 16 (01:29:45):
In theory?
Speaker 8 (01:29:45):
This year? He's the best roll around tight end. And
he's not even a close second. That's not a knocking
Mike the sitty receiver, that's not a knocking Groow Samples
a blocker, best all around tight end, and it's not
even close.
Speaker 2 (01:29:58):
They haven't had anybody like him in my adult life.
They've had good tight ends. They've had tight ends who
are good at certain specific skills. They've got one now
and Drew sample. I don't I can't recall anybody who
has looked like Eric Hall, certainly this early in his career.
Speaker 8 (01:30:14):
I had somebody bring him to me last night, Rodney holding. Yeah, okay,
so let's go back to Rodney Holding.
Speaker 16 (01:30:21):
I'm good with that.
Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
Yeah, fun comparison, all right, Thank you as always be
any time. All right, man, there you go. Richard Skinner
from Local twelve and Local twelve dot com. He's spent
part of that conversation talking to us from a well.
Darren Horne, the head coach head men's basketball coach at NK.
You will join us next on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's
sports station.
Speaker 1 (01:30:43):
You've been listening to football in THENNETTI on the official
home of the Bengals, Cincinnatis, ESPN fifteen thirty. Both the
Bengals wrestle with the Ravens. Coverage starts Sunday morning at
nine on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.
Speaker 2 (01:31:00):
It is twenty seven away from six. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty. Im Oegar, you can't do better than combining
ice cream and college basketball, and well, both those things
will be combined tomorrow night at Northern Kentucky University. The
men's and women's basketball teams taking part in hoops and
(01:31:20):
scoops at Truest Arena. It starts at six fifteen, doors
open at six fifteen. A chance to meet and get
to know both the men's and women's basketball teams at
NKU as we get said for the twenty twenty four
to twenty twenty five season. And ice cream and so
Darren Horne is with us. I could talk about ice
cream for ten minutes, coach. I'm just gonna warn you, hey,
(01:31:43):
you know.
Speaker 11 (01:31:43):
What great, great way to put it mo two of
our favorite things. Who doesn't love ice cream in college hoops?
Speaker 2 (01:31:49):
Do we kid?
Speaker 5 (01:31:49):
Here?
Speaker 15 (01:31:49):
You go?
Speaker 2 (01:31:50):
I appreciate you joining us, I'm sure, And I've talked
to some of your peers in the business. You get
to this time of year, it's always fun to get
in the gym, but the all season college basketball is
so different, so hectic. Man to get this time of year,
it's got to be more welcome than usual.
Speaker 11 (01:32:07):
Well, no, it really is. With all the changes that
are going on. You know, we're full time fundraisers and
marketers and all of those things, and we've always had
a part in but maybe not leading the charge in
like we have to now and to get in the
gym and get to work, and especially for a guy
like me, this did at this thing for a while.
Mode to get in the gym with the kids and
start developing players and get to know your team. I mean,
(01:32:28):
it's what it's all about the year.
Speaker 2 (01:32:30):
And I think you're in a relatively envious position where,
you know, for for folks who follow college basketball, we're
gonna spend the coming weeks trying to figure out who's
on what team. And obviously you've you've brought some kids
in and you've seen some some kids leave the program.
But they say in college troops, get old and stay old.
And if you can do that with guys who have
been a part of your program for a while, it's
(01:32:51):
even better. And you've done that.
Speaker 11 (01:32:53):
Yeah, we've been really fortunate. We've got eight written players,
which I don't know where that ranks in college basketball,
but I know it's really close to the top. And
then even two of the transfers that we brought in
were for need and depth, and and one of them
is a three year college guy, the other one is
a fifth year college guy. And so there's no question
that that makes a big difference when when you're trying
to build something, and especially for us, right we're going
(01:33:16):
to be measured on how do we do in these
power foard games that we have. Can we get in
the tournament again, which would not be anything new, but
we haven't won. Really important when you talk about how
crucial it is to have older.
Speaker 2 (01:33:31):
Guys, yeah, and so it's it's a team that has
older players. It's a team that has players that have
been in your system. And then you start to talk
about familiar faces, and you're looking for guys who can
make a significant lead. And obviously with every player you're
looking for individual improvement. But I look at LJ. Wells
and I go, that's that's a guy. That's a guy
who's got a chance, based on what I saw last year,
(01:33:52):
to take a significant step forward, maybe be an All
league caliber player. My off base, You're not off base.
Speaker 11 (01:33:58):
He would be the guy that I would have mentioned
first if you had not mentioned him yourself. I think
the thing with him is mo we've seen those flashes
as you mentioned. Now can he be an everyday guy?
Can he go from hey, I think maybe I can
be pretty good at this to walking in the gym
and saying I'm dominating tonight. Who am I taking down?
Speaker 2 (01:34:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:34:16):
I really think that's the key for l Jay And
and if early practice is any indication, he's really starting
to take some steps in that direction.
Speaker 2 (01:34:23):
So you mentioned early practice, and you're gonna play a
game and you're biting off a lot early. You go
to Florida State, so you're gonna play an ACC team
in more than a month between now and then. Give
me the one or two things that you go, Look,
we've got to get this either fixed, or we've got
to get this straightened out, or we've just got to
get this accomplished before we play a game.
Speaker 11 (01:34:45):
I think taking care of the basketball and rebounding. You know,
when you look at those games where you're from the
Horizon League, you're you're at Florida State. We follow that
up on Friday at Purdue, come home for Nicols State,
who I think is picked at the top of their league.
Then we have the Cincinnati game at home. So a
brutal stretch to start the year. When you look at
those games, you know, if you don't take care of
the ball and you don't do the job on the glass,
(01:35:08):
sometimes it doesn't matter how many other good things you do.
I think those are two areas for us that are
going to be really important. And I don't know if
that's unique, mo. I think a lot of coaches will
tell you that in my position this time of year,
But for us, I think those are going to be
crucial area.
Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
And then kind of the flip side is where would
you look at your team and go, you know what,
we're maybe not game ready, but we're a little bit
ahead of where I thought we would be on October
the second.
Speaker 11 (01:35:32):
You know, I think our defense is a little further
along than it normally is. As you know, we have
kind of a unique defense, but with some returners and
I think adding some guys that are picking it up
on it quickly, I feel like it's a little further ahead.
And then I think how many guys might be able
to score the basketball and been pleasantly surprised with with
how many guys are having consistent days where they're putting
the ball in the basket at a pretty good clib.
Speaker 2 (01:35:53):
Kind of walk me through your newcomers. You've reached into
the D two ranks before with some success, but obviously
there's a little bit of an adjustment with with the
guys you have making that leak to D one. Now,
what's that going to be like?
Speaker 11 (01:36:06):
Well, I mean, I think it's similar for all those guys, right,
it's it's just everything's a little harder, a little longer,
a little bit faster, a little tougher, and it's an
adjustment for sure. But you know, the thing we like
about the two guys that we brought in. One Dan Gerresker,
who's a third year player who'll have two years with us.
He is maybe as talented as anybody in our gym.
(01:36:27):
He's a legit six or four left handed player, can
really score the ball, get it where he wants it
to go, and I think has potential to be an elite,
elite defender. So from a talent standpoint, he's better than
any of the guys that we brought in. And then
Josh Dilling, who's a fifth year grad transfer from a
Division two. I mean, this is a guy that made
seventy one threes I think at forty six percent last year,
(01:36:48):
and so he's got great feel. I fits really well
in our system playing in ball screens, and so I
think he can be a guy that can really give
us a sturdying presence on the perimeter.
Speaker 8 (01:36:57):
NK you.
Speaker 2 (01:36:58):
Tomorrow night, six fifteen, Hoops and Scoops had Troe's Arena
for the uninitiated walk people through. What's going to be
taking place tomorrow night.
Speaker 11 (01:37:07):
Yeah, as you said, doors open, a six fifteen free event.
Both the men's and women's team. Jeff Hans will be
there with his group new new women's coach at Northern Kentucky.
And it's technically not ice cream, it's frozen custard. Thanks
to Witch Frozen Custard. Yeah for sponsoring the event. The
total family friendly deal games on the concourse for the
kids arcade games, there'll be an autograph session, ticket giveaways.
(01:37:32):
Players are gonna get out and do a little something
and everybody's gonna get to meet and interact with the players.
But really just wanted it to be a kind of
doors open, family friendly event for everybody to come in
and get to meet our guys and gals and have
a chance to, as you said, to be reminded of
basketball seasons literally just around the court.
Speaker 2 (01:37:49):
It's remarkable. And you know, look, I'm I'm old enough
to remember you as a player. I remember when the
season would start like December one or right after Thanksgiving,
November thirty win there the idea that you're going to
be playing in Look, the season has gotten earlier and earlier,
the idea that we're gonna have regular season college basketball
on November fourth. There's a lot of stuff in this
(01:38:10):
sport that's taking some getting used to. That might be
for me at least at the top of the list.
Speaker 11 (01:38:15):
Yeah, it's crazy, right used to you started practice not
until October fifteenth, and now we're playing a real game
two weeks after that. And again, if if you're one
of these schools, you know, if you're if you're in
the Big Twelve or the Big East like Xavier Cincinnati,
you might potentially have some early season games that can
really impact your season. You know, for us, it's a
bonus to pick up one of those wins. For those guys,
(01:38:36):
you know, some of those important games come pretty early.
I guess the good news is everybody has the same
amount of time to get ready, but uh, it's it's
pretty early, and you know, I think at the same time,
it's great to get college basketball season started, and to
those that are diehards like us, it's good to see
some games.
Speaker 2 (01:38:53):
Yeah, no question. Six fifteen Tomorrow night by the way,
everyone in attendance gets a voucher for a ticket offer
as well as a voucher sure for WITS custard while
supplies last. We can call it frozen custard. I mean, dude,
it's ice cream as far as I'm concerned, but I
understand technically it's frozen. Whatever it is, it's good and
it's always good to have you with us. Do it
(01:39:14):
again during the season, Coach, we appreciate the time as always. Man,
thanks so much, thanks him appreciation. Darren Horn always kind
enough to join us. It's a free event tomorrow night,
six fifteen men's and women's teams at NKAU Activities games,
free ice cream, frozen custard. By the way, WITS frozen
custard is awesome, and posters autographs. It's going to be
(01:39:35):
a really good time. College basketball is here. The Norse
opened the season on the fourth of November against Florida State.
The event tomorrow night, free free basketball, free ice cream,
frozen custard. You can't beat that. Nineteen away from six o'clock.
Sports headlines are a service at Kelsey Chevrolet, home of
lifetime powertrain protection and guaranteed credit approval from their family
(01:39:58):
to Yours for life, Kelsey dot com. Bengals injury report.
Are you ready? You better because I'm gonna give it
to you. Bengals getting said to play the Baltimore Ravens.
You can hear me scrambling. I am my typical disorganized mess.
One o'clock on Sunday against Baltimore. Here we go, bj
(01:40:18):
Hill Limited Trey Hendrickson Limited. We know what those two
players have been dealing with, respectively. The good news is
Miles Murphy a full go, McKinley Jackson a full go
Cincinnati also without Sheldon Rankins today, that's not good. Bengals
game plan tonight six o'clock. By the way, Tarren, we
mentioned that this show tonight they're broadcasting from Oakley Greens,
(01:40:40):
which I like. And I said at four o'clock or
something that I was thinking about going to the show
tonight because I like Oakley Greens, Bengals fan, love Dan
and Lap and figured, you know what, maybe I'll get
off work and I'll stop buying, have a cold one,
maybe get something to eat, watch the show and hang out.
And I got a tech to hear from somebody who asked,
(01:41:02):
are you really going to the show? Tonight that I
wrote back Bengals game plan, Yes, and this person wrote back,
someone who doesn't like you is going to be there?
Speaker 8 (01:41:16):
Wow? So do I go?
Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
Well, a couple of different issues here. I might not
find out who this person is unless I actually go.
I might go see this person and I might not
think they're the person who doesn't like me, and then
I find out they are. Am I being warned that
if I go, this person's night is going to be
(01:41:41):
ruined because they're there for Bengals game plan but now
because they don't like me, their night is ruined. Is
this person promoting conflict?
Speaker 15 (01:41:50):
What are we all?
Speaker 5 (01:41:52):
Would people will not like you?
Speaker 2 (01:41:54):
And so I wrote back who is it? And I
haven't gotten a response, So I'm kind of intrigued, But
like if it's someone that like, they don't like me,
and maybe I don't like them, and now it's like, man,
I'm stuck, but I don't want to leave, and so
I either I leave early and they win, or we're
both there and we don't like each other and it's
(01:42:15):
weird and it's awkward. So tonight Bengals game Plan. What
if it's Dan Horde or Dave Lapham? No, they love you.
What if it's Orlando Brown's going to be there? What
if it's Orlando Brown. He's been here before, he has
been here. But I mean, if Orlando Brown doesn't like you,
you might have a problem. Whatever. If it's him, whatever
(01:42:38):
I've done to make him mad, I'll undo it.
Speaker 13 (01:42:41):
Maybe this should be we got six minutes left in
the show, maybe like a six minute pole question.
Speaker 2 (01:42:45):
All right, we haven't done a pole question today. Pole question.
I'll address that during the break. But I may or
may not be there tonight. By the way, if you're
the person who doesn't like me and you're on I mean,
would you listen to someone you don't like if it happen,
if your hate listening and you're the person that doesn't
(01:43:06):
like me, and you're going to be at Bengals game
plan tonight, can we still just can we just ignore it?
Just tell me who you are and I'll ignore you.
How could you not like me? I'm a likable guy, right,
I think so?
Speaker 8 (01:43:20):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:43:21):
Uh, it's a quarter to six. My name is Mogar.
It's a good segment.
Speaker 8 (01:43:25):
One.
Speaker 2 (01:43:25):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. This is
Tanya Willness at Delta Down all of Ohio.
Speaker 13 (01:43:33):
This is Dan Horr joined Dave Lapham and me for
Bengals game Plan that Doesn't Think on the official home
of the Bengals, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 2 (01:43:42):
You know, for the first time, I had taken a
history of our poll questions, which are a service of
United Heartland Insurance. Go to UHI ands dot com. We
have well almost had clear uh unanimity? Is that the
right word? I mentioned on are I might go to
the Bengals game plan show at Oakley Greens. Then I
got a text that red, someone who doesn't like you,
(01:44:03):
will be there. Should I still go? Ninety seven point
eight percent say yes. I do have stuff to do tonight.
I've got to like, I haven't cut my grass because
I didn't need to cut my grass for weeks, and
then we got like eight days.
Speaker 5 (01:44:14):
Of snow or rain snow.
Speaker 2 (01:44:17):
I got that going on. I got stuff I don't know.
I'm on the fence. I was on the fence anyway.
I like Oakley Greens, but I want to find out
your birthday to click grass. It is the day before
my birthday. The grass doesn't wait, the grass doesn't care.
Plus if I do it now, I don't have to
do it tomorrow or Friday when I don't have to work,
or Saturday when I don't have to work because it's
a UC bye week. By the way, I stopped short
(01:44:40):
the sports headlines, Bengals game plan means if you're looking
for soccers, and I had FC Cincinnati's on Fox Sports
thirteen sixty the Orange and Blue taking on New York City.
Pregame covered starts at seven o'clock. Tigers advanced to the
National League Division Series, beating the Astros five too. They
sweep the series two games to none. Kansas City has
a one thing lead in the fourth inning over Baltimore.
(01:45:02):
If the Royals win, three of the four teams still
alive in the American League will be from the American
League Central. Matt's Brewers tonight Game two, Padres Brave tonight
game two, as well. A few minutes with our friend Mike,
Mike who last night sent me an email wanting me
(01:45:22):
to talk politics, which will never ever ever happen. Hi, Mike, Yeah,
that was.
Speaker 16 (01:45:28):
A tongue in cheek. I think you need to mention
that anyway. Uh, I know who won't be that person
there to I got Pete.
Speaker 2 (01:45:36):
Rose Pete Pete Rose, God rests, soul will not be there.
Speaker 3 (01:45:40):
Correct.
Speaker 16 (01:45:41):
That was a little little bad taste, wasn't it.
Speaker 8 (01:45:43):
Most it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (01:45:44):
It wasn't great. But go ahead, No, well, I just.
Speaker 17 (01:45:48):
Follow your lead brother with the Saturday Night Live irreverent commentary.
Sometimes come anyway, How about these Padres? So they were
all four games night? We're outstanding?
Speaker 2 (01:46:01):
Correct?
Speaker 16 (01:46:02):
Outstanding? Yes, So what a great pre precursor for I
don't care what you say about football, It's still American's game.
But they give her to Sodo and at the time
the Padres give her a Sodo and well, I don't
know where they're going. But he didn't have a good
deal last year.
Speaker 15 (01:46:19):
But the.
Speaker 16 (01:46:21):
Hidden factor was this king guys they get from the Yankees.
Speaker 8 (01:46:24):
Who throws?
Speaker 16 (01:46:25):
He looked like Scowball on the right hand side last night.
Speaker 8 (01:46:29):
Was he great or one?
Speaker 2 (01:46:31):
Unbelievable? Twelve strikeouts, no walks? He gave up what four
or five hits ridiculous. The thing that stands out to
me about that San Diego team, and it's it's why
I picked him to win the National League. I know
Philly is really really good, probably the most complete team
San Diego had the best bullpen after the trade deadline
in the sport, that starting lineup is still ridiculous. The
(01:46:53):
addition of Arise and what he has done Tatiz profar
Merrill Bogart's cronin Worth Machado me like I mentioned like
seven guys before I mentioned Manny Machado. Uh, the pitchers,
they can run at you and look baseball postseason baseball
is awesome and home field advantage in the playoffs only
matters so much, and the Padres will not have it
(01:47:15):
in the second round. But the atmosphere at that game
last night felt different, and they won and played from
ahead and got an early lead. It's it's hard for
me to not root for those fans in San Diego
that looked and felt really cool last night, and they.
Speaker 16 (01:47:33):
They deal and Hater blows the game tonight for Houston.
Speaker 2 (01:47:38):
That's right, got I gotta run. It's it's time for uh,
it's time for Bengals game plan at Oakley Green's where
someone is hanging out that doesn't like me, I gotta run.
Speaker 8 (01:47:47):
Man, thank you there, they got a gun, don't go.
Speaker 2 (01:47:49):
No, they don't have a gun. No Mike has a gun.
No no, no, no, no, no, nobody has a gun there,
but he's bringing a gun. I am thinking about cutting
my grass. I'm thinking about going home and watching baseball
and having a cold one and listening to Bengals game
Plan my way home. We're done. What's on tomorrow's show?
(01:48:14):
Me have a great night. Thank you for listening. Thanks
to Tearan for producing Bengals game Plan is next with
Horden Lap, who we haven't yet confirmed are the people
who don't like me. This has been the bud Light
five o'clock Happy Hour on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports station.
