Speaker 1 (00:00):
Like ESPN fifteen to thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Here we go the Mullwegers Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
It is the first day of the NCUBLEA Tournament, so
Mowagger is not here. But I am. I'm Chad Brendle.
You'll have me for today and tomorrow. It means we
(00:38):
will we'll get to watch a bunch of basketball together.
How about that sounds fun, doesn't it.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
I'm excited. I am too.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
The NCAA Tournament is already underway. We've got two games
final Creighton eighty nine, Louisville seventy five. I think everybody
just people get caught up, Tarren. Louisville was the team
in terms of seating. Louisville was the team that got
(01:10):
the most conversation. Everybody wanted to talk about Louisville should
have probably been a five seed, for at worst five
or six seed with their resume, and everybody wanted to
talk about how Louisville got screwed, and they did. They
should have been a five or six seed. But what
no one ever talks about when that happens. Everybody just, oh, well,
(01:35):
they got screwed on their seating but they're gonna win. Eh,
You're playing a Creighton team, granted in Lexington, but Louisville
never really got to experience what Xavier did last night,
which was a home court advantage in the NCAA tournament,
because Crayton got up big and really never let their
(01:55):
foot off the gas, never really gave Louisville that chance
to get that thing down to six or seven points
where it feels like, Okay, get a couple stops and
we can win this game. Tarn I just saw that
only twenty seven, like just under twenty seven percent of
(02:15):
the brackets remain perfect.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I think louis was less to do with it.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I know that means like I mean, I know, like
high Point over Purdue was kind of a trendy upset pick.
But that tells me like seventy percent of America had
Louisville winning that game.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Well, I'm proud to say that both of my brackets
are part of that twenty seven percent.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
That's good to hear you. You accurately assess the situation
and said, look, Louisville doesn't have an answer for Ryan Kulkbrinner,
so they're gonna have to overcompensate and What that can
do is it allows a guy like Jamia Neal to
(03:01):
just go bananas for Creighton, eleven of sixteen from the floor,
twenty nine points, twenty two for Steven Ashworth, he made
four threes, and then Kallkbrinner just gets to be Klkbrinner
fourteen and eight or fourteen and six, four blocks and
Creighton just got out in that what is the second
(03:24):
or third segment of the game, hit a couple threes,
got some distance, never back down, and Louisville pat Kelcey
now zero to five in the NCAA tournament. Great great, great,
great great regular season, get all the way to the
finals of the ACC Tournament, but sent home in the
(03:49):
first game of the NCAA Tournament. The other game that
has gone final produced seventy five high point, sixty three
high point, made it interesting for a little while, but
perdue a heavy dose of Trey Kaufman Wren who had
twenty one on the block high point with no answer
for the big fella. So Purdue moves on, Creighton moves on.
(04:11):
Games in action right now, Wisconsin up fifteen seventy two
fifty seven on Mounttana. They are just under eight minutes
remaining in that one. Houston, they are not playing nice
with SIU Edwardsville. It is fifty four to twenty four
at the start of the second half, so Houston will
(04:35):
cruise into the second round. And then the game that
just tipped off Auburn and Alabama State Auburn up twelve
to five. There are three Tarran, three fascinating games that
are going to be happening while we're on the air.
(04:55):
Maybe the best window of the tournament, although the opening
window for tonight is also outstanding. Like if you're a
basketball junkie, the games that are start from three thirty
really until nine to five. That UCLA Utah State tip
(05:23):
off at nine twenty five, so that'll go to eleven thirty,
Like you have great games today. Clemson, McNee State is
McNee state focus their coaches is apparently going to NC
State and Will Wade what is their focus like because
they can beat Clemson. That mcnee's team is good VCU
(05:46):
BYU in a in a contrast of styles. I think
that's going to be a great game. Georgia Gonzaga I
think has a chance to be a really good game.
That one was at four thirty five. And then the
night session tonight Tennessee Wafford. I don't think is going
to be great. But you get Arkansas and Kansas so
(06:11):
coach cal and Bill self, I think that's going to
be a good one. I think Yale, Texas, A and
m has a chance to be a good one. That's
a lot of the national guys are looking at that
one and saying that one's an upset pick. Drake and
Missouri is on a lot of those upset boards. Utah
State and UCLA. That's to Bob Huggins disciples, Terren, did
(06:33):
you know that I.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Knew about one? I didn't know the other one I
didn't know.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Utah State is coached by Jared Calhoun, who started his
career here at Cincinnati. He has a degree from the
University of Cincinnati, working for Bob Huggins, then worked for
Hugs at West Virginia, and now is the head coach
at Utah State. So two Hugs guys, and then really
(06:58):
ten o'clock Michigan San Diego State. A lot of people
think that's a five twelve to keep a close eye on.
I think Michigan's too big for San Diego. For San
Diego State, I think they will handle them. And then
I've also heard you see San Diego, you see San Diego. Sorry, yeah,
you see san Diego. San Diego State was bounced Tuesday.
(07:18):
That's my bad. I think they'd probably like another crack
at it with as bad as they played on Tuesday.
But a lot of people think that, you see, San
Diego can hang with Michigan. There's some people that think Wilming,
you and see Wilmington can hang with Texas Tech. I
am not one of those people. I love Texas Tech.
I think they have an Elite eight window this year
(07:41):
with that team. So there is a lot of what
should be like normally, Taran, you look at these things,
You're like, that's gonna be a blowout. That's gonna be
a blowout. That's these games might end up being blowouts
at some point, but most of these games from the
rest of the day today through midnight tonight'd be great entertainment.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
I agree, you know, I said, I'm especially looking forward
to that one. Kansas and Arkansas. Yeah, I mean, I mean,
I know, I mean, I know either the rosters aren't good,
but I mean, but like I said, just.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Cal the rosters have talent. Yea, they have not lived
up to the I mean, Kansas was number one in
the preseason, and they most certainly have not played anywhere
close to the number one team in the nation, but
they have over the last three or four games, looked
(08:35):
more like we expected Kansas to look. So I like
Kansas in that one especially. I think I do thero
is out for Arkansas, which I think just that's gonna
be a tough one to overcome because that's a big,
live body that you're gonna need trying to slow down Kansas.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
There's a there's a lot of good stuff that we're
gonna be flipping back and forth and talking about here
as we go throughout this show, and uh, and then
again tomorrow, Tarn back at it tomorrow. Tarn and I
are unsure on what we're gonna do for lunch tomorrow.
If you have recommendations, let me know at Chad Breundle
(09:18):
on Twitter or uh you can call in five, one, three,
seven thirty.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Nothing too heavy though, because we can't be fun.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Yeah, nothing too heavy, but like lunch, we like, we
need lunch, a good lunch spot that's like somewhere reasonable
for me to get to. Don't don't tell me you
want me to go to like kettering to to to
bring lunch to to Kenwood for me and Tarren. But
(09:45):
we've I mean, we've just we've got our list of
regular spots, Tarran. I've been in a lot lately, so
we've ran through that list of the spots that we
regularly go. Like to mix it up a little bit,
little little little flavor in your ear. Today was good.
We had bards Burgers and Latonia shut out the bors.
(10:06):
Good Burger, enjoyed it, thought it was tasty. Fries held
up like that's always the challenge, Arran to the fries,
hold up the fries held up. If you can't tell
what I'm doing is I'm filibustering because I don't want
to have to talk about what happened last night. Tarren.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
I know.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
I'm gonna and I'm gonna be fair. I watched the
whole game. Xavier, it's funny and we'll get to this
a lot in the next segment. Xavier flip the script
on their season. That was what had happened to Xavier
all year. Get up early, hold a big lead, get
(10:46):
to about the middle of the second half, and then
the paint starts falling. Off and then you lose it.
You get a flat tire, and next thing you know,
you're just sitting by the side of the road wondering
what the hell happened. This time, Xavier was in the
opposite position. They got behind early. They put up a
(11:08):
little bit of a fight going into halftime. They went
down to went went down eight. Texas stretched it out
a little bit, but Xavier never lost contact. They stayed
right in that necessary like eight ten point range where
if you can just keep fighting, you're gonna have a shot.
(11:31):
And I think defensively in the second half, I didn't
think Xavier's defense was bad in the first half. Texas
just has some dudes that can can get buckets. Trey
Johnson is You're gonna talk about Trey Johnson in the
NBA for a long time.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Tarren Oh, I trust me, I know, I know, Like.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
I don't know if he's going to be a star.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
But he's a guy I think who averaged like like
fifteen to seventeen points a game.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
And maybe more than that. Like it might he might
not be like the star star, but I could see
him at some point being a twenty point a game guy,
bucket getter. He made some tough shots. Him and treymont
Mark in that first half just made some tough shots.
But Xavier didn't panic. They didn't panic when foul trouble
(12:19):
hit Freemantle and Conwell in foul trouble, which you would
think would spell doom. Almost did, almost did. But Marcus
Foster twenty two averages what seven and a half twenty.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Two couldn't miss from three, four or.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Five from three, eight of nine from the floor, made
both of his free throws, eight rebounds to assists. That
is a dude getting the spotlight and taking advantage of it.
They needed everything they got from Marcus Foster. Dylan Swain
(12:58):
I thought did as well as you could defensively on
Trey Johnson agreed. He made everything tough, and ultimately I
think that's what won out because they never really gave
him anything easy. He worked and worked and worked and
worked for those twenty three points.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
I'll tell you, if Slay just add a three point
shot to his game, he could be a solid role
player in the league.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Yeah, I mean, he's got the problem is he's he's
missing half of the three and d n that's what
he could. He fills the role of playing defense shooting
three not so much, but massive win for x they advanced.
They play Illinois tomorrow night. They can win that game.
(13:48):
I don't love Illinois. I don't. I don't think Illinois
unless they have one of those games where they just
shoot the lights out, I don't think Illinois is all
that great. Is this is setting up where Xavier can
can be one of those teams. We see it every
you know, almost every year somebody comes out of that
play in game and gets on a little run.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
I'd like both of them, like Xavier in North Carolina. Yeah,
North Carolina can get Old Miss.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
I don't. I don't like Illinois. I think Xavier can
beat them. And then Kentucky without Jackson, Robinson and Butler
is still hurt Laman Butler is still you know, not
one hundred percent he's gonna play. But that's a Kentucky
team that that Xavier can beat. We've also got some
(14:37):
Bengals and some Reds to get to. But uh, we
have Richard Skinner coming up at three thirty. So let's
go ahead and take a break. Now we'll hear from
Sean Miller and then we'll get to Skinny and then
we'll get this show on the road. This is the
Moegar Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (14:52):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (14:56):
Traffic from the uc Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 7 (14:59):
The Universe City of Cincinnati Cancer Center offers innovative clinical
trials and the region's only young onset colorectal cancer program
called five on three five eighty five u CCC.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
Southbound seventy five's got some slow.
Speaker 7 (15:14):
Traffic between Western Avenue and Fort Washington Way. You're up
to an eleven minute delight in through there. Also, keep
in mind southbound two seventy five's down to one lane
that for construction on the Carrol Cropper Bridge. I met
exelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
We got. We got a suggestion, tearn, which is which
is funny to get mine the fast?
Speaker 8 (15:37):
Wait?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Yes, what's in the kitchen?
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Is it from the exact restaurant?
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Yeah, Chicken on the Run, That's what they suggested. It's
it's in the kitchen right now every Thursday here at
iHeartMedia Chicken on the Run. I appreciate the suggestion.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Well, no, wait, no, no, no, no, we.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Got Ron's roost. That's right, Ron's roost is in there.
Ye want to piss off the Yeah, that's that's right,
that's my bad. That's not me.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
He said that.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
The Greg said they have the best bacon cheeseburger. But
that's exactly what we had today, bacon cheeseburgers with a
little barbecue sauce from from bards Burgers. Keep the keep
the suggestions coming. I'm not rolling out Chicken on the run.
It's just those were Ron's Roost and Bards Like. That's
(16:28):
kind of that area in terms of not repeating try
something different. I've been i mean on a big kick
to try to get Terran to try something different.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
Mark it down, let's say it. It's on the list.
It's on the list, even not tomorrow, maybe sometime down
the road.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Right, we got Terrn to do Indian food a couple
of weeks ago. Have you gone back for seconds of
Indian food?
Speaker 3 (16:52):
I have not.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Okay, that's okay, that's fine. You gotta you gotta start slow.
You're not going to be the point you're craving it yet.
I mean, it's not like if someone brought it to me,
I wouldn't do it. Just was it was a little
heavy for you for a radio show, because I think
you were ready to take a nap as soon as
(17:15):
you got done with the food fair might not be
a good mid afternoon, like I got something to do lunch.
Speaker 9 (17:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
We were gonna get to Xavier in this segment, but
but Tarren wanted to hold off and do it in
an hour and number two. So when we had a
little bit more time to let it breathe. We got
Richard Skinner coming up in a couple of minutes, and
we got Jeff Carr coming up at four o'clock and
then we're open for the rest of the day. So
Tarren wanted some some some leeway so that we didn't
(17:48):
have to rush because he wants to torture me and
make me talk savior for an extended stretch and not
a small window. Who you got winning, Arran? Who's who's
your team? Who you got winning this thing?
Speaker 3 (17:59):
Uh? He's you.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Do you think they finally got the offense to win it?
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Yes? If they don't get it done this year, then
I don't see when they will.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
Here's my only thing with like Houston and Saint John's
are kind of in the same boat, right. They are
two of those teams that they're super aggressive defensively it's
what they're known for, and it always feels like at
some point those teams get an officiating crew in the
tournament that causes issues because they call the hand checking,
(18:31):
they call the bumping. They don't let them bully people.
And that's why I'm a little hesitant on Houston and
Saint John's. That doesn't mean I don't think they can
win it. It just means I think the odds of
going through six games and not running into a crew
that calls it like that is a challenge. Hearn challenge.
(18:54):
But they also have the two best coaches in the
sport right now, Rick Patino and Kelvin Samson. So we'll see.
Even though Danny Hurley says he's the best MFN coach
in the country, I have Duke. If Cooper Flag is healthy,
(19:17):
he's playing tonight. They say he's playing. I just want
to see, like, does he look like Cooper Flag. If
he looks like Cooper Flag with what they have around him,
I don't know that anybody can beat them, if not Duke.
I like Florida. I think Florida is as complete a
(19:39):
team as there is in the country, and I don't
think a lot of people are talking about him, and
they have that balance. They're great on offense, they're great
on defense. Metrically like, it wouldn't surprise me to see
Florida cut down the nets, although Todd Golden, being young
and very new to this, that'll be the question for them.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Well, according to ESPN, they're the second highest picked champions. Really,
that's surprising. I like it.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
I don't like it because I just said I like
them as kind of somebody that nobody's talking about all
that much, and then everybody's picking them, but you can't
win them all tern uh, Okay, Let's take a break.
What's up, natty round. Let's take a break, and when
we come back, we'll talk to Richard Skinner. I know
(20:31):
you just talked to him yesterday, but we'll talk to
him about other stuff. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic.
Speaker 7 (20:42):
From the uc Health Traffic Center. The University of Cincinnati
Cancer Center offers innovative clinical trials and the region's only
young onset colarectal cancer program. Call five one three five
eighty five UCCC on southbound seventy five. Traffic is stop
and go Betweenane Shepherd Lane and Ronald Reagan Highway looking
(21:02):
at a six minute to lay through their construction as
westbound two seventy five down to one lane for repairs
on the Carrol Cropper Bridge at Ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
This report is sponsored by Generator Franchise dot Com. Millions
protect their homes from power outages with Generak home stand
by generators. Would you like to be now?
Speaker 1 (21:22):
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Damn, it feels good to be a gangs. It does
realanks a type? Please?
Speaker 2 (21:41):
If anybody would know? The digital sports content editor for
Local twelve Local twelve dot com, Richard Skinner, how exactly
does it feel to be a gangster? Skinny feels great?
Speaker 9 (21:55):
It feels great, A and B. I just talked to Karen.
I know you messed up the chicken thing, but both
ron Ron's Roost and Chicken on the Run are great.
And as you know, you're in northern Kentucky and I
am too. Bart Burgers is so good. It's so good.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
So Taran hit me up. We were texting back and
forth about what we're going to have for lunch today, said,
you know anywhere for a good burger and I said, yep,
I do.
Speaker 9 (22:20):
Oh yeah, I mean I I go there. We we
go there with another couple probably once every three months.
We try to do different restaurants, mind you, which you know,
which what a lot of people do. But man, that's
like on the let's go to barge Where were we going tonight?
Let's go to Barge Burgers. It's really good. It's in Latonia.
It's it's next to a really good uh oh, you're
(22:40):
gonna kill me for this. It's next to a really
good donut place, Moonrise, thank you, thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Phenomenal.
Speaker 9 (22:50):
Yes, it's phenomenal. And I'm not a big donut guy.
Usually it's like it's like, let's just we have to
get something tomorrow. We just have to do it.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
They have they're open at night. They're not a morning
doughnut place. You gotta go at night five to five
to nine.
Speaker 9 (23:06):
Uh correct. It's usually when you get out of Barge Burgers,
you go, oh, moon Rise Donuts, Yes, let's do that
for tomorrow morning.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Go.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
The last time, they had a blueberry iced donut, like
normally people make like the blueberry cake donuts, but the
icing was blueberry and it was phenomenal. Phenomenal.
Speaker 9 (23:23):
No, it's really good. I know you didn't have me
come on here to talk to talk about those places
are really good people. I'm just telling you barges Burgers,
moon Rise, Donuts go, you'll enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
There's not much good that comes out of Latonia. Rick
Browing included.
Speaker 9 (23:39):
Rick Bury's good guy out, I've won. It's funny. So
last night I had I am C the Norther Kentucky
Girls Coaches Association banquet Basketball Coach Association banquet, and Chris
McDonald's who used to coach at Newcast, talked about one
of her part of our speeches was you know, I
never win at holy Cross. And I'm like, to right,
(24:01):
we don't. You don't win the holy Cross.
Speaker 10 (24:02):
It's greatly gym.
Speaker 9 (24:03):
It's one of the great gyms of all time. And
I thought, you know what, I've won one game of
holy Cross and it was as a freshman coach. I've
never won. I don't think another game in holy But
she's like, you don't win holy Cross, you just don't.
Speaker 8 (24:15):
Tony's great.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
I had somebody ask me this that they wanted me
to ask you because they they figured you would have
the on point most accurate assessment of this situation. What
the hell is going on in Cooper High School? Skinny?
Speaker 9 (24:33):
Is that more complicated? It's more complicated than people think.
I will tell you this. I love Tim Sulton. He's
one of my favorite coaches to coach against. He's one
of my favorite coaches to just talk to. It is complicated. Uh,
it's the craziest thing I've ever seen. This guy is
going to and I don't think they're gonna win the state.
(24:56):
They got a tough draw. But if they do, my word,
can you imagine what would come of that? So I'm
not gonna air whatever laundry either way, I know, but
I can't do it then. But I will tell you this,
there's no better person, no better coaching Tim Soul and
I am a huge fan. Uh, he's whatever whatever happens
(25:19):
after this, he's gonna lay on his seat. He's gonna
take whatever next program and and build them up. I
mean he took he took the Cooper job at a
point where you're like, he actually coached at Saint Patrick
High School in Mazeville, and that's not enough. Saint Patrick's
are really small. I mean you talk about tiny school,
they're like the tiniest of the tiniest schools, and he
took a flyer on going down there to coach and
(25:39):
did did a nice shop and then he you know,
he was an assistant at home for a while. He
took he took the Cooper job when that school opened,
and took his lumps early, just because it's a new school,
new kids, you don't know it. And he built that
program into what they are today. And he's he should
always be revered for that. I one of the greatest
(25:59):
wins I ever coach, and I'm an assistant those I'm
an assistant coach at Beechwood. We beat them in the
twenty nineteen regional semifinals, a year we lost to Cubcast
in the finals. It's probably the most fun game I've
ever been a part of because we beat a really
good team and a really good coach, and Tim is
a great coach.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
I was hoping to get you their some dirty laundry,
but I know you're better than that.
Speaker 9 (26:22):
Unfortunately, I can't do it. I can't do it. I
can't do let's talk.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
Bengals just came out, Tevin Jenkins signing with the Browns.
You know a lot of people thought that was headed
towards the Seahawks, or at least that was like the
initial belief, what the world are the Bengals gonna do
at guard?
Speaker 9 (26:38):
Well, they had Lucas Patrick from the Saints visit today,
that's a that's a viability. You're not down too much.
You're down to Lucas Patrick and a Brandon shirt. And
for I ares stand, I'm not only all that high
on Brandon Shurf Kevin Jenkins. I get that they didn't
sign it injuries, right, Yeah, and the injury history is
a band injury history, and so I understand that, but
(27:02):
you gotta sign somebody. If it's Lucas Patrick, that's fine,
He's okay, he's good. He's Alex Kappa good. And that's
not a knock on Alex Alex. But those don't know
Alex played really hurt last year. I mean, everybody you
know crapped on him because he wasn't very good and
all that he played hurt. And if he didn't play hurt,
then I'm not sure who else would play guard at
that periot. It would have been Cody Sword at right guard,
(27:23):
Cordel Wilson left guard. Fans, do you guys like that,
you probably don't. And so if you can get this
guy to come in and then you have Cody Jackson,
Kirkland and and Coreel buying for the other guard spot,
I can live with that. Here's the thing, and.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
Live with it. It's Joe Burrow will actually physically.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
Live with it.
Speaker 9 (27:48):
So here's the thing. That's a great point, and that's
where I was gonna get to. Joe Burrow went to
the super Bowl but behind arguably arguably the worst offensive
line he ever played behind, right, I mean he did.
He went to a Super Bowl with Clinton Spain and
Trey Hopkins and I can't run who the tackles were.
For goodness, that was the worst offensive line in his career.
(28:10):
They spent money on the offensive I spent money on
Ted Carris, spent money on Ox Kappa, spent money on
on Orlando Brown Junior, spent money on Trent Brown, got
a first round draft pick in a Marios Smims. Everybody
thinks that they have not addressed office. They have. They've
tried their darnest to address offensive line. You can't address everything.
You just signed two wide receivers for mega money. But
(28:33):
at the end of the day, they do have to
the point Ted, they do have to sign a guard.
I mean you have to sign a starting caliber guard
and then whatever the other guard position is, you have
to You just have to live with it because it
just is what it is. And yeah, can you spend
a draft pick on that and hope he plays into
that role but before the end of day day two? Yeah, maybe,
but you also need an edge rusher, and you need
a defensive tackle, and you need a linebacker, and you
(28:56):
probably need more room in the safety room. But you
can't do everything. And so yes, if Lucas Patrick's your guy,
is he great? Nah? But is he good?
Speaker 11 (29:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (29:05):
He's a starting caliber offensive guard and that's what you need.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
Can he pass protect? That's really all that matters, isn't it.
Speaker 9 (29:11):
No. I think I looked this up on PSF. He
didn't get great, not not awful grades, but it weren't great.
I don't think he allowed us sack this past year
if I looked at it, right, And that's pretty important, right.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Said some Yeah, that's usually pretty important. But protecting Joe's
life is the franchise.
Speaker 8 (29:32):
Look.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
T and Jamar are great, but if you don't have Joe,
it doesn't hit the same.
Speaker 9 (29:37):
So that's right. I will tell you, I do think
they have literally, I mean this literally, the best backup
quarterback in the league. Again, I don't want Joe to
get hurt. No one wants Joe to get hurt. But
I do think they have the best backup quarterback in
the league. And I think that means something. But that
being said, yeah, to your.
Speaker 11 (29:55):
Point, but at the end of the day, you can't
have five a high caliber, high level, high paid offensive line.
Speaker 9 (30:05):
You just can't. And unless you just say, well, we're
not gonna pay Jamar Chase and Higgins go away, no
you can't. You can't do all of those things. So
if you've got four fifths of it right, and I
think right now they have three fifths of it right.
If they sign a starting caliber guard, then they'll have
four fists and then the other fifth is okay, and
the other part too. It is. And I think all
(30:26):
of us that covered the Bengals wrote stories about this
this past year. Was how good Joe got it on
unscripted plays like when he got flushed and he was
able to move around, he either ran for a first down,
ran for yardage, or made a throw down the field.
It was a big play, and you know I don't
want to do that all the time. Nobody does. I mean,
what's Patrick Mahomes's greatest strength, right, it's the dances around
(30:49):
for a year and you're like, why can't they tackle him?
And then he dances up here and then he decides
I'll run for twelve yards and I'll got a bounce
or I'll oh hey, I'll flick it down the field
to you because you're wide o. And that's we all
played backyard football, right? What's the harshting backyard football when
the quarterback runs around like crazy man and you try
to cover with few and oh no, Freddy's back there
(31:11):
wide open. Okay, good play.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
To the Reds. Just momentarily, can this offense be good
enough to win this division or to contend in this
division all the way through September?
Speaker 9 (31:26):
Like it?
Speaker 2 (31:26):
Just looking at it, there's very little margin, Prairi. You've
already got Steer and Stevenson questionable. You know, you hope
McClain is right. He looks right. But I think the
starting pitching is going to be strong. I think the
bullpen is going to be above average. Can the offense
do enough to keep this team hanging around.
Speaker 9 (31:48):
I think so because I believe in Matt McClain and
I believe in Cees and I could be proven completely
wrong in a month of April. But you give me
those two guys and what I think they're best is
then yes, and yeah, I'd love to have rhtt Louder
in the rotation. I'd love to have at Andrew Abbott
the rotation, and I think you eventually will. And that's
(32:10):
kind of baseball today, right where like you don't have
your guys for thirty three starts, you got him for
whatever starts. That's fine, But yes, to your point, I
do because I think Matt mccleany is best. He's not
the best player on this team because a certain shortstop is,
but he's darn close. He's darn close to being the
guy you're like, that's a forty double, eight triple, twenty homer,
(32:33):
eighty RBI, one hundred and ten run, eight ninety five ops.
That's that guy. And CS. I know you can look
at last year and go, well, that stunk and maybe
the league. No, I think it was all injured. I
think it was all risk related. And if you look
at every number of him before that it's off the
(32:54):
charts like this dude Rakes. And I'm a big believe
if I had a stock bos, I know his stuck
is probably low. I think his stuck is going to
be high. And I hope I'm not wrong. I could be.
I just like those two guys, and they're a big
part of this offense.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
In my opinion, poetic justice that that Xavier game went
the way that it did last night the exact opposite
of how so many heartbreakers have gone for Xavier this
entire season, that they flipped the script and get the
most important win of the year in uh like bizarro world.
Speaker 9 (33:31):
So it's crazy Jerobe Hunter makes three or fourth.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Yeah, husually makes the biggest one of the night.
Speaker 9 (33:38):
The three correct, And so we were. I was at
the Holy Grail today doing most show, the NCAA show,
and I'm home with some guys afterwards, and I said,
how many three of you guys think Jerome Hunter made
all year? And a couple of people who are big
Xavier people went, I don't know, ten, twelve, I'm I
guess right, he made thirteen. I said, you know he's
(33:58):
shooting on the year. He's over fifty percent, I said,
And by God right below him, John Hughes, he's actually
made he set up nineteen on three. Who would believe
those things? I mean those the fact those guys did
those things, and you know the whole I mean, Rodney
Kerry just he's gonna lose his job and some Xavier
fans gonna hate this. I know you know this already.
(34:18):
It feels like Sean Beller is gonna be the guy.
And so yeah, to your point, though, that was a
great way to go because Illinois it's best, is really good,
Illinois is worst, is totally beatable to you and I live, Yeah,
you and I live in Kentucky and I went to
(34:41):
Kentucky and I've come back after cal left being a
Kentucky fan, which I'm sorry people, but I am. It's
a bad they there's a bad match up for Kentucky.
In my opinion, there's just a terrible matchup freaking.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Without Jackson Robinson. Absolutely, yes, Like if Jackson Robinson was playing,
it's a different story.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
But he's not.
Speaker 9 (35:00):
Yeah, totally different, Yeah, totally, And we don't know. I mean,
what's Lamar Butler's health status? Right, it feels like it's
minute to minute, like there's a shoulder pop out and
the shoulder not pop out, and if it pops out,
oh crapp, he can't play. And Okay, now you're done.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
You're gonna think I'm crazy.
Speaker 8 (35:15):
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (35:16):
I'm not ruling out Troy taking down Kentucky tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (35:20):
I'm ruling out Troy only because they're they're not great
on offense and they're defensive numbers. While they don't allow
a lot of points, their defensive metric isn't great. Last year,
terrible matchup they do. But but last year, last year
Oakland and again this is totally in retrospect, right, I mean,
(35:42):
Goki was always a great three point shooter. Krey Townsen
is a great player. I mean he starts at Arizona
and we're a really good team. He doesn't do what
he you know, he doesn't average what he averaged at Oaklands.
I mean that was a terrible, terrible matchup. This is
not in my maybe maybe, Chad, But I don't think
it's a bad matchup. Yeah, I do think the second
(36:02):
round matchup, whoever it is, is a bad matchup.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Xavier is going to beat Illinois.
Speaker 9 (36:07):
I think you're right. I do.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Again, I'm not impressed with that Illinois team.
Speaker 9 (36:12):
No, and it's best. And I heard Paul fris Truant,
I have to give credit recrest to do and I
as soon as you said, I'm like, you're that was
such a good analogy. He's like, at their best, there
are two seed at their worst, they lose the Rutgers
and they did. And so that's that's the that's the
that is literally the weirdest team in the country in
my opinion.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
Any any surprises real quick, any any sleeper picks anything
for anybody to watch out for between tonight and tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (36:39):
Yeah, if you're a Ken Palm guy, the metrics would
show you to take VCU, Virginia Commonwealth out a bunch,
Take Marquette out a bunch, Take U C l A
out a bunch.
Speaker 12 (36:53):
That said my Florida, Yeah, my final four though after
I say all that is Florida, Michigan State, even though
they've got a really tough bracket with Old Miss and
they're really good too.
Speaker 9 (37:05):
Metrically is Florida, Ole Miss, Wisconsin and Houston No love
for Duke. No, I can't do it. I I it's.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Not Flags Healthy. They're the best, the Flags Healthy, They're
the best.
Speaker 9 (37:21):
Team they are. Do any of those kids handle with
pressure of the moment. That's that's the thing for me.
Do they handle? And Alabama's in that bracket, Wisconsin's in
that brackets. Why I got Wisconsin the final four is
I think Wisconsin beats Obama and I think Duke falls
apart because on their side of the their side of
the brackets hard. They got Arizona and Oregon on the
(37:41):
other side of the bracket. I think both those teams
are really really good.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
All right, man, Terren jelling at me, So I gotta go,
but uh, we appreciate it. Thank you for coming on,
and we'll talk soon.
Speaker 9 (37:53):
All right, Take care you go.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Richard Skinner, Local twelve digital sports content editor. We got
to take a break before Tarn kicks me off the air.
This is the Molaiger Show, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (38:05):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (38:08):
Traffic from the uc Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 7 (38:12):
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center offers innovative clinical trials
and the region's only young onset colorectal cancer program called
five one three five eighty five UCCC Southbound Red Bank Expressway.
It is an accident at Duck Creek Road traffic is
slow southbound seventy one going from Martin Luther King toward
(38:33):
four to seventy one. At the moment, there's a three
minute delight in through there on that ezalic with traffic.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
This report is sponsored.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
By ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Here we go our number two since Nati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
It's the Moegger Show. I am not Mowegar, Chad Brenda
informo who is enjoying in C DOUBLEA tournament games. Thank
you for choosing me. Tarn and I are also enjoying
(39:22):
in C DOUBLEA tournament games, just don't have a cold
beverage to consume while we are enjoying them quite yet.
This is as I predicted, this was going to be
a really fun window of games as we rolled through
this afternoon. To give us something to talk about. Auburn
did stretch out their lead a little bit going into
halftime forty one thirty one over Alabama State. But Alabama
(39:46):
State has been hanging around McNeice, who I said in
the beginning of the show to keep an eye on
this one. Twenty five to eleven. They are up on
Clemson with about four minutes just under four minutes to
go before or halftime. Woof Clemson eleven points in the
first sixteen plus minutes of the game and then just
(40:10):
getting started. Another one that I think that should be
a really good game VCU and BYU and Georgia and
Gonzaga also coming up in this window, so we should
have some excellent games to chatter about as we roll
through the afternoon. But our last guest of the day,
(40:33):
I wanted to front load the guests and then backload
talking about whatever it is that we wanted to talk
about as these games are going on. So we are
going now to our guy from Locked on Reds who
he was already on this network earlier today because Audie
scheduled wrong and thought he was scheduling for yesterday, then
it ended up being today, so we're double dipping.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
But that's all right.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
It's perfectly okay because he has that much knowledge that
he can carry two two segments none other than Jeff Carr. Jeff,
what is going on? My brother? How are your brackets
so far?
Speaker 8 (41:07):
Yeah? They're looking horrible, But I appreciate your saving me
best for last You know.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
I did it was Skeinny. First. I love Skenny because
you can throw anything at Scanny and he's ready. He
didn't give me the information I wanted on some drama
in Northern Kentucky high school basketball, but close enough we
get Jeff batting cleanup. And speaking of batting clean up, Jeff,
is there anybody who's going to back clean up for
this Reds team this year?
Speaker 8 (41:33):
It looks like at least that other game is going.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
To be Austin Austin Hayes.
Speaker 8 (41:36):
Yeah. They keep rolling with him in the in the
four spot in spring training, and Terry Francona mentioned that
on a program the other day that he likes the
one through four being Freedom, McLain, Ellie and Hayes. And
I think it's interesting because he's a guy that we
talked about a little bit being, you know, the bounce
back kind of dude that's coming off of a crazy
(41:59):
just fluke type thing that he dealt with in a
kidney infections that you know, not even just a normal injury.
And so he is healthy, he's ready to go, and
he's looked pretty good in spring training, So I like
it to start. I also like Christian and Karnassian Strand
to take over that role at some point in the summertime.
Speaker 2 (42:19):
Everybody is a little freaked out about the offense right now.
Rightfully so, it hasn't been performing well the last week
in Goodyear. How much of that is structurally what we
talked about in the offseason that this team did not
properly address the concerns that were there on offense. How
(42:40):
much is it Spencer Steer and Tyler Stevenson are out,
and when you lose two of your top four guys
on offense, your offense is gonna look kind of rough.
Speaker 8 (42:52):
I think it's I think it's some of the loss
of Steer and Stevenson, and it's some of just how
is formatted. Like guys are getting ready for the everyday
grind of the season. So you're seeing a little bit
of fatigue from the everyday players that are getting into
the lineup. Plus you're also seeing a bit of shuffling
around to try to get different guys more at bats.
(43:16):
I think here over this last week we'll see a
lot less shuffling at the top of the lineup anyway,
and we'll see you know, the every day four that
I believe will be at the start of the season,
really playing each day. The thing for me, though, is
that they're getting their struggles out of the way now
and it's not something that they continued. I mean, they
(43:38):
started off so scorching hot with the bat in spring training.
I mean, Ellie wasn't gonna hit five hundred all spring,
and if he did, then I would really worry that
he would begin the season, oh for thirty or something
like that, just because that's how baseball works. Guys don't
hit five hundred. I mean Ted Williams only hit four
hundred a couple of times, and he's one of the
(43:58):
only guys to ever do it, and that's just not
something that we're going to see Ellie ever do. But
if we can see guys, you know, kind of get
through those struggles now bounce back a little bit these
final days before opening Day, then I'm not gonna be
that worried about the offense. And quite frankly, Chad, like,
the strength of this ball club is going to be
(44:19):
pitching anyway. They just got to hit enough. They don't
have to hit a ton.
Speaker 2 (44:23):
How much is enough, like, realistically, how much is enough
for because I don't think this is a top five
pitching staff in baseball. I think it's got a chance
to be very good. I think it has a chance
to be pretty consistent over one hundred and sixty two games,
which might be more important than being dominant for stretches.
(44:47):
But what four runs a game? Four and a half? Like,
where do you think this offense needs to find itself
to be good enough to support what we think is
going to be solid pitching.
Speaker 8 (45:00):
Well, we can't avoid the fractions. I think it's four
and a half. I think four and a half is
where they need to be on average, just because I'm
with you and they're not going to be a pitching
staff that holds holds opponents like two three nuns a game.
But I would be confident in saying that they could hold.
On a typical day, we will see them hold the
opponents to four runs or less. So if they could
(45:20):
just average four and a half runs, they could do that.
But we're also talking about generally not really a whole
lot of changes from twenty twenty three. We've still got
a ton of guys that we saw from that team,
and that team was flirting with the modern day scoring
record for this ball club back in nineteen ninety nine,
So I don't think that they get that close. But
(45:44):
this offense has shown its potential a couple of years ago,
and it collectively went through a sophomore slump last year,
so I expect to bounce back.
Speaker 2 (45:52):
Is Christian and Carnassy owned Strand you mentioned you think
you can see him in the cleanup role. To me,
it feels like he's the key, Like I don't think
I think Candelario can have a good year, but I
don't think he's like a breakout, Like he's a guy
that you're going to count on and say, there are
gonna be stretches where Candelario carries this offense. I think
(46:14):
if this offense is going to get where it wants
to be, there probably does need to be a stretcher too,
where Christian and Karnacio and Strand is hitting home runs,
is hitting doubles, is you know, going through one of
those those ups that is good enough to kind of
carry things.
Speaker 8 (46:32):
I think he's the key to exceeding expectations. I think, yeah,
I think that's the guys. Obviously, Elie Delacruz is the
main like star of this team, and so as he goes,
so does the team. Matt McLain is probably the key
to meeting expectations him having pretty much a season just
like twenty twenty three, But then cees, what does he
(46:55):
do for you? Because the profile of him is a
clean up there. The profile of him coming through the
minor league system was all of the home runs, all
of the power, all of the RBIs, this is going
to be your guy, and because of the injury last season,
we didn't really get to see it happen. Because he
barely played in twenty twenty three, he does not have
(47:15):
enough at bats under his belt for us to know
who he is. So he definitely has to have that
breakout for the Reds to exceed their expectation. But I
agree with you. I think that he's you know, if
you want to use the age old sports term of
who's the X factor in this lineup, it's Christian and
Karnacium strand.
Speaker 2 (47:33):
Relief pitching is a little difficult to maybe keep up
with in the spring because so many guys are used.
You don't necessarily know exactly like who's pitching against the
A opponents, who's pitching against the B opponents? What have
you taken so far from this bullpen? And how good
(47:53):
can they be.
Speaker 8 (47:55):
I'd say that the key characters are doing exactly as
I thought they would, with the exception of one. And
I was very surprised to hear some different things out
of camp about Sam mal about the fact that he
showed up the camp out of shape. He wasn't quite
where they wanted him to be. His velocity is way down.
(48:16):
And while Tarry Franklin acknowledge that, and he said he's
a veteran, spring training is different for veterans. We're not
evaluating him the same as we're evaluating like a Joela
Soursa or somebody like that. There's still an element of
readiness that he has not achieved yet. So I almost
wonder if he begins this season in triple A because
he does have an option, so they could send him
(48:38):
to Louisville without exposing him to waivers and then you
see like a Joe La Soursa on the opening day
bullpen or something like that. I noticed that they've already
announced that Graham Ashcraft is going to be a part
of the group. I firmly expect that we've got Emilio Pagan,
Tony Santeon, Scott Barlow, Brent Souter, Taylor Rodgers joining Graham Ashcraft.
(49:00):
So you're talking about six out of the eight spots already.
Alexis Das should be in there, although Terry Francone's most
recent comments are that he still needs to see something
from him, so there hasn't been a decision made as
of yet on Daz, and I kind of appreciate that
because Terry Francona made it clear coming into camp what
you have done before does not matter and you must
(49:22):
earn your spot now, because I mean, Chad, what has
this team done before? So they've obviously got to earn
it this year. And hopefully Alexis Daz can show what
he needs to show in these last couple of days
because this has been two springs in a row that
have been concerning.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
For him starting pitching. How are we looking and don't
say not good?
Speaker 8 (49:47):
Well, I would love it if Andrew Abbott's not going
to start this season on the IL, But I don't
think that he's going to miss a ton of time,
like I think at most he misses two starts and
even and then he could start that very first game
in San Francisco on April fifth. I believe I'm trying
(50:09):
to remember what the calendar looks like. I'm gonna be there,
so I'm really excited about it. But Andrew Rabbit should
be starting then, I would think, because they're just giving
him extra time because of the slow ramp up that
he had in spring training. Didn't really even pitch until
a week ago in game action. So I definitely understand
Carson Spiers being the number five guy for a couple
(50:29):
of turns in the rotation. Other than that, the one
through four exactly who I thought they'd be, and I'm
very bullish on all four of them. I think that
even Brady Singer, adding a cup fastball that he trusts
a lot, could elevate what we already know about him,
and that's that he's a reliable guy every fifth day out.
Could he be more than just reliable though? That will
(50:51):
really push this pitching staff forward, because I expect Hunter
Green to be very close to where he was last year.
He came into camp in crazy good shape. Everybody was
talking about how good he looked. But then also, Nicolodolo
is healthy, and we know that to be true because
they've already announced him as the number two guy. So
I think that we will see something more akin to
(51:11):
what he did in the first eleven starts last year
than what we saw in his final ten, and that
was ACE one B. As Hunter Green and Nickelodolo go,
this whole team could really exceed their expectations even more
if we see Nickelodolo give us twenty eight to twenty
five starts of what he did in his first eleven
(51:32):
last year.
Speaker 2 (51:33):
Yeah, Lodolo is obviously the key there. Because we talked
about this. I think when you look at this, he's
the one guy that can be a two. I you know,
I like the rest of the rotation, but I think
it's threes and fours and fives for the guys that
are vying for those spots. I think Hunter Green is
as great as a one. You need Lodolo. I don't
(51:54):
think Singer can be a two. I don't think Martinez
can jump up and be two. I think that's Lodolo's
spot and he needs to one stay healthy and two
show the consistency that he can be that.
Speaker 8 (52:09):
Yeah, because I think the comparison that you look at
is just in division with the Cubs. Like Game one,
they throw shit to Immanaga. You expect that Hunter Green
matches up well with him. Game two, they throw Justin Steele.
So who do the Reds have to match up with
a guy like Justin Steele? And it's gotta be Niic Ludolo, right,
and Andrew Rabbit if he goes crazy, could make an
(52:31):
argument for it, but I think that he's more suited
as a three or four. And then Nick Martinez just
screams like a really strong four or elite five. And
I would say the same for Brady Singer. But I
love the fact that the Reds rotation is much more deep.
We don't have, you know, years past Chad it was like,
all right, we know the first guy, but we're kind
(52:51):
of shuffling the cards for two through five. That's not
the case anymore.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
I just think that's in looking at like teams that
have that we're on starting pitching. It can't be your
ace and then just get some dudes like you got
to have it too. I think, like, I just think
that's a spot that if you're going to count on
relying pitching, if you're going to count on relying on pitching,
starting pitching especially needed to. So that's that's hopefully what
(53:18):
we see from Lodolo any any surprises, We're what a
week away? Any surprises you think to open the twenty
six man before I let you go.
Speaker 8 (53:30):
The only surprise I would see is if Alexis z
does not show whatever Terry Francone is looking for from
him and they replace him, because he does have options
as well, so he could start the year in Louisvile
if they need him to. There are certain guys like that,
and I think I think it's funny because you know,
we as fans tend to look at a guy and
they say, well, they're not going to make the opening
(53:51):
day roster, you just cut them. But there's lots of
players like that that the Redskins keep with an organization,
get them ready and moivle, and then bring them up whenever.
It's kind of settled into that guy that hey, you're
not just being handed a spot like say what you
will about David Bell, but it kind of felt like
you knew who his guys were. Terry Francona made it
clear that that's not the case now, and I was
(54:12):
so glad to hear that and to see what it
will do for guys like Alexis Das because to know
that you're not just going to be handed the closer
spot because you closed in the past is a really
good finion. And this bullpen has so much experience. There's
three other guys outside of Das that have had closer experience, Pegan,
(54:33):
Barlow and Rogers. So it's like, all right, if Daz
isn't ready for the first game, the Reds have plenty
of options, dude, Like, you've got to get it together.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
Appreciate it, brother. Where can they find you?
Speaker 8 (54:45):
You can find me everywhere you get your podcasts on
Lockdown Reds, including the Ihart radio app. You know, so
follow me on Twitter, x S, Instagram, TikTok, all that
great stuff at Jeff Carr with three s.
Speaker 2 (54:57):
Appreciate you man, We'll talk soon.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
Thanks.
Speaker 8 (55:00):
Hey, thanks Jeff Gord.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Here you go, Jeff Carr, locked on Reds. Let's take
a break. We'll get you caught up on all the
happenings in the NCAA tournament when we return. This is
the Mowagger Show on Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (55:17):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (55:21):
Traffic from the uc Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 7 (55:24):
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center offers innovative clinical Trials
and the region's only young onset colarectal cancer program. Call
five one three five eighty five. UCCC police are responding
to an accident on Hamilton Avenue between Cross County Highway
and Madison Avenue. Expect some delays as they work to
(55:44):
clear this scene and southbound seventy one some slow traffic
from Montgomery Road to Ridge Avenue a two minute delay.
I'm at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 3 (55:53):
This re forty sponsor.
Speaker 13 (55:54):
Bt Bus A buss.
Speaker 2 (56:12):
You welcome back my Leggers show, hour number two, Rolling
along since not Easy, ESPN fifteen thirty. I'm Chad Brenda
and for my leger today and tomorrow we are watching
the NCAA tournament together. Or I'm providing you updates, uh
while you're driving so you don't have to look at
your phone. One of those two things. I got a
(56:34):
couple more suggestions, Tarren. One, we've had Greek to me.
Did you didn't That wasn't your favorite? Was it the
Greek petas that I brought in? Yeah, you didn't love
that one. I enjoy it. It did not sit well
with you. It caused problems during the show. Yes, the
(57:00):
other substation in Florence. But I had that yesterday. So
that's what I think of that. That's how good I
think Substation's outstanding. It's one of the better like sub
substyle shops around. If you want a sandwich tomorrow, I've
got an idea. If sandwiches sound good, but not a necessity.
Speaker 3 (57:24):
Gotcha, let me sleep, let me think about that.
Speaker 2 (57:27):
Yeah, I mean we got a little while. We don't
have to decide until like tomorrow at noon. Right, it's
not an instant decision type thing. Let's catch up on
the NCAA tournament. Like I said, expected some good ones
going on right now, Let's get to the finals. Creighton
(57:48):
eighty nine to seventy five over Louisville. It is a
one and done stay for Pat Kelcey. I know it's
always dangerous, Teraran. I know everybody who's looking at that
next round and saying, man, Auburn hasn't been playing as
well of late, that they were throughout the season, and
Louisville's gonna be in Raupperina in front of their fan base.
(58:11):
You got to get there first. Louisville didn't get there.
Creyton did. Creyton dominated from early on. Louisville never really
could make that run to get them back in it,
so the Cardinals out after an excellent season in the ACC.
Purdue seventy five to sixty three over High Point. High
(58:31):
Point hung around for a while, head it in single
digits in the second half. Trey Kaufman Wren outstanding for
Purdue to get them across the finish line. Wisconsin never
really endowed against Montana. John Tanjie, we were talking about
him before the show. Tearn gives Wisconsin a star. They're
(58:54):
gonna be a tough out. They're not going to be
an easy out. And then Houston, poor SIU Edwardsville gets
spanked seventy eight to forty and Houston basically just they
ran the clock in the second half. There was a
running clock second half essentially didn't put a whole lot
(59:16):
of effort into that. After scoring, Houston was up fifty
two to twenty four at halftime and coasted across the
finish line. Games Live right now. Auburn started the second
half is pulling away from Alabama State. That one was
five late in the first half. It is up to
eighteen now. Auburn fifty six thirty eight over Alabama State
(59:41):
McNee State is just smacking around Clemson thirty one thirteen
at halftime. Clemson scored thirteen points in twenty minutes in
the first half. Has not been a good start. It
was North Carolina got the ACC off to a good
start on Tuesday. Clemson and Louisville not so much. That
(01:00:06):
makes me worry about Duke Tarren Bland makes me worried
about my confidence level in the Blue Devils, although essentially
the Blue Devils took all these ACC teams and destroyed
them during the regular season. So and then the game
of the afternoon at least I think is ongoing BYU
(01:00:30):
and VCU BYU up won twenty to nineteen about midway
through the first half. Iagor Demon with eight so far
for BYU, it's gonna be fun in NBA. Yeah, Oh,
I love Demon man. He can pass. Tarran really really
(01:00:54):
pass like he's a point guard at six eight. Don't
see a whole lot of those. But twenty to nineteen
by U up on VCU midway through the first half.
Georgia and Gonzaga tipping off here in about five minutes.
(01:01:15):
That should be another good one. And then tonight Wafford
Tennessee kicks it off. Arkansas and Kansas should be a
great game. Yale A and m should be interesting. Drake
and Missouri upset alert there, Utah State and UCLA. The
Bob Huggins Disciples down in Lexington. Has Mick complained about
(01:01:37):
having to go all the way from Westwood to Lexington?
That we did it? Did that happen? I think we
would have heard it.
Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
I don't think it happened yet yet after the game,
at least not publicly.
Speaker 2 (01:01:47):
Yeah, and then tonight Omaha and Saint John's, UC San
Diego and Michigan, and then closing out the night, UNC
Wilmington and Texas Tech. Let's take a break. Well, I'll
see if I can squeeze in Sean Miller after the break.
More active this sin Saty's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 5 (01:02:09):
Thirty, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (01:02:14):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 7 (01:02:17):
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center offers innovative clinical trials
and the region's only young onset colarectal cancer program. Call
five one three five eighty five UCCC westbound seventy four
approaching two seventy five. It's an accident southbound Montgomery Road.
Another accident at Main Street on Running Road. It's a
(01:02:38):
crash near Galbreath Road in Hamilton Avenue. Accident between Cross
County Highway and Madison Avenue. I'm at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 3 (01:02:46):
This report is sponsored.
Speaker 14 (01:02:47):
By I Like It, I Like Woby Like.
Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
Give me to take.
Speaker 2 (01:03:05):
Excellent choice Terence excellent choice pressing podb. Will's got a
lunch recommendation. Let's go out to the phones.
Speaker 3 (01:03:16):
Will.
Speaker 2 (01:03:16):
Where should I get tarn lunch tomorrow?
Speaker 15 (01:03:20):
All right, well, first of all, I want to say
I'm liking you more and more since you love substation.
That's probably my favorite place I had.
Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
Yesterday I had I had a ham and capacla on
wheat with mayonnaise, brown mustard, lettuce and banana peppers. Outstanding.
Speaker 15 (01:03:38):
Love that place, go there all the time. Jersey Mix
would be my number two. Agreed, But I would like
to I would like to suggest for you if you
haven't tried witch doctor.
Speaker 2 (01:03:49):
Oh love so uh. When my wife was sick, one
of the things that she loved was they do like
a charcooterie box that's like uh like crack, it's got
salami in it, and so she would always get that.
So then I would get their Cuban, which is fantastic.
Speaker 15 (01:04:09):
I love a Cuban, So yeah, I look.
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
If there's a sandwich place in northern Kentucky, I've had it. Uh,
and I'm trying to knock out all the ones in
Ohio that I haven't had. I love a good sandwich.
Speaker 15 (01:04:23):
What about the old sandwich block that was right off
a Buttermilk Pike Yep, now just called the block?
Speaker 2 (01:04:29):
You know what they have that I can't ever find anywhere?
They have wheat berry bread.
Speaker 15 (01:04:35):
Wow, I'm not a wheatberry guy.
Speaker 2 (01:04:37):
I love you can't find it nobody. No stores just
have wheat berry bread there.
Speaker 15 (01:04:42):
Their sandwiches are huge.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
Yes, there's subs. Those soups are really good too.
Speaker 15 (01:04:49):
All right, So see what Tarn wants to do.
Speaker 3 (01:04:52):
All right, I'll check it out.
Speaker 15 (01:04:53):
You can't go wrong with I think which doctor might
be your choice?
Speaker 2 (01:04:56):
All right? Thanks?
Speaker 3 (01:04:57):
Well I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
Man.
Speaker 8 (01:04:58):
All right, thanks guys.
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
Phil wants to talk reds Phil, you got any lunch recommendations?
Speaker 3 (01:05:03):
First?
Speaker 16 (01:05:05):
Actually, yes, you like heroes and it sounds like you
do Ali Baba Grill. It's it's on Red Bank.
Speaker 2 (01:05:13):
Okay, that's not fare.
Speaker 16 (01:05:14):
It's a little hole in the wall.
Speaker 9 (01:05:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 16 (01:05:16):
No, it's a little hole in the walls place by
the by the coffee shop across from Dizzy's.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
That's that's where the broadcasting school used to be. That's
where I went to broadcasting school.
Speaker 16 (01:05:29):
Oh so you know the way there?
Speaker 3 (01:05:31):
I do I know exactly where.
Speaker 16 (01:05:34):
Best French fries in town? Hot or it's fluffy, I
mean they must change the oil twice a day or
something like.
Speaker 2 (01:05:41):
It's like the best I've had a couple of Greek
I've had fries at a couple of Greek places. Do they
put like the lemon seasoning on it?
Speaker 16 (01:05:50):
No, it's got I think it's sore. Okay, well think
it flowers, so think it soft. But it's it's nice.
Speaker 2 (01:05:58):
But it's got like a six it's got like a
citrus flavor to it, doesn't it?
Speaker 16 (01:06:04):
No, no, no, okay, this is this is all savory
and just it's good. I don't need I don't need
citrus on my papers. He said, yeah. But well, first
of all, go x and I have to and I
say that as a guy who doesn't rooty gifts, you see,
but I used to go to mass on the campus
(01:06:26):
of Favor University, So that's.
Speaker 9 (01:06:28):
What my allegies.
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
That's a big win for them yesterday. It was a
huge win. And to walk Texas down like they did,
to hold him to four field goals in the final
thirteen minutes, with the way Texas was making shots over
the first twenty seven minutes was outstanding. Sean Miller coach
circles around Rodney Terry.
Speaker 16 (01:06:49):
I am just so happy that sach Fremantle has some win.
Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
Yeah, for sure, Like.
Speaker 16 (01:06:55):
That guy's been through hell. It's nice state that he
gets that experience. It has a dub at it. Let's
go ahead and be in Illinois and then.
Speaker 9 (01:07:07):
We'll see you kidding.
Speaker 2 (01:07:08):
Look, I'm telling you I think I think they're better
than Illinois. I do not think Illinois is that. Just
don't think that. I've watched them a couple of times.
They're one of those teams that when they're when they're hot,
they're pretty good, but but they're not hot all that often.
I think Xavier is defending well enough to give Illinois trouble.
I think Xavier wins that game and then they can
(01:07:30):
beat Kentucky if Kentucky's not going to have Jackson Robinson
Lamar Butler's shoulder is banged up. I mean, they could
play themselves into the Sweet sixteen.
Speaker 16 (01:07:42):
Who's gonna be the remains Sato of this team? Then
that's the follow up question.
Speaker 12 (01:07:47):
I guess Foster, right, I think so they always have
this guy that just comes out of the wood work.
Speaker 9 (01:07:54):
And just goes Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
I mean that's they do a good job sticking with it.
They they could easily shrug their hung their shoulders, hung
their heads after that Villanova loss. At any point, any
loss in those seven games probably knocks them out of
the tournament, and they got the job done. They I mean,
it wasn't a murderer's row, but they still managed to
(01:08:19):
win every game and do enough to get themselves into
this position. So you have to give Sean and his
guy's credit. I hate it. I don't want to give
them credit, Phil, but I will get it. I will.
Speaker 16 (01:08:33):
I sense your pain, That's why I gave them the
credit for.
Speaker 8 (01:08:36):
You say I took you up, Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 16 (01:08:39):
Say you're quite welcome. So I'm listening to the struggles
of Alexis ds coming out of spring training again. Yeah,
and like last year, the Mets were all over all
over him. I'm like, is there is there a price?
Is there something at the Meskan off board, the Reds
were like, you know what we act. We have a
(01:09:00):
pretty deep bullpen and we've got we've got people down
in triple A.
Speaker 9 (01:09:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
I mean, I guess the only problem would be most
of their offense that you would won is pretty high dollar.
But I don't know what their their farm system or
what they look but I'd look into it, like, I
don't think this team needs him. And here's the problem
I've I've had with Das for a while. Phil the
(01:09:30):
way the way he is mentally, he has not shown
he can pitch in anything but a safe situation. Every
time they've tried to use him outside of that, he
has been wobbly, to say the best, if not a
ticking time bomb. So if you can't use him as
a closer, and then you can't put him in lower
(01:09:53):
leverage situations, I don't know what role he has. So
I would not be opposed to that at all, especially
looking at this offense and knowing it needs a bat.
Speaker 3 (01:10:04):
It needs a bat bad.
Speaker 16 (01:10:07):
Well, Chad. All I want to say is the Bengals
just signed T Higgins and Jamar Chase. So mister Cassilinies,
there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:10:21):
Keep appreciated.
Speaker 8 (01:10:23):
Phil.
Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
Congrats on the X win last night.
Speaker 16 (01:10:25):
Man, all right, have a good one.
Speaker 3 (01:10:27):
Thanks you too.
Speaker 2 (01:10:29):
Jeremy's got some lunch recommendations, Jeremy, send us somewhere good.
Speaker 9 (01:10:34):
J and W.
Speaker 8 (01:10:35):
Sandwich Shop.
Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
Is that over in Norwood?
Speaker 9 (01:10:40):
Yes, yes it is. Have you had it?
Speaker 2 (01:10:42):
I have had it. I think the day I got it,
Taran wasn't here.
Speaker 9 (01:10:49):
Yeah, the Little Italy is one of the best Italian
sanwiches around.
Speaker 2 (01:10:52):
That's what I had when I went. I had the
Little Italy.
Speaker 9 (01:10:54):
It is a monster, it absolutely is.
Speaker 10 (01:10:58):
You gotta get to large.
Speaker 9 (01:11:00):
I get too bows up.
Speaker 2 (01:11:01):
I mean I I literally could only eat half. I
took the other half home. I actually think I gave
the other half to one of the producers.
Speaker 1 (01:11:09):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
And it might have been Sean McMahon who's doing the
Reds game today, because there was no chance in hell
I was going to be able to eat the other
half of that sandwich. That's an excellent, excellent recommendation, Jeremy.
I you know, because of the campus that's located in Norwood,
I try to stay away from there because there might
be like there might be an alarm that goes off
(01:11:32):
when I enter the city limits. But it was it
was outstanding. It was a really really good sandwich. That's
a heck of a recommendation.
Speaker 9 (01:11:40):
I'm a sandwich kind of sewer. I like it. I've
had any times from everywhere that's got one. I think
there is absolutely one of the best.
Speaker 2 (01:11:47):
Appreciate it, man, Thank you you any sports you want
to talk?
Speaker 9 (01:11:50):
Thank you?
Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
No, all right, let's take a break, Tarren, that's you
weren't here that day. But today I was very, very good.
It was huge. If you're in for a cold cut sandwich,
we'll put it on the list more after the Cincinnati
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:12:11):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty traffic.
Speaker 7 (01:12:16):
From the uc Health Traffic Center. The University of Cincinnati
Cancer Center offers innovative clinical trials and the region's only
young onset colearectal cancer program, called five one three five
eighty five. UCCC westbound seventy four, the right lane blocked
from an accident approaching two seventy five. Traffic through there
(01:12:36):
stop and go from Rye Bolt southbound seventy one seventy five,
an accident on the left shoulder after twelfth Enridge, an
accident at Woodford on that ezak with traffic, this reporting.
Speaker 8 (01:12:56):
Thank you of a.
Speaker 17 (01:12:57):
Master plan to say nothing but sweat and so my
hands so wat dig into my pocket all my money spend.
Speaker 3 (01:13:03):
So watch the default.
Speaker 17 (01:13:04):
But still coming up with lynch, watch my mission leave
my Reds advanced thinking.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
I said, I got seven minutes? How long is this?
Speaker 3 (01:13:10):
I need money, kids?
Speaker 17 (01:13:13):
So why think of all the babiest things I did?
Speaker 2 (01:13:15):
I used to roll up?
Speaker 3 (01:13:16):
This is a hole up.
Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
I was in the car with somebody recently tearing money
that wasn't aware of the rules, and uh, something with
Nate Dog came on and they were talking and I
was like, you you're you gotta shut up. They looked
at me like I had lost my damn mind. So
you're not allowed to talk when Nate Dog sings like
(01:13:38):
that's those are just the rules. What can I tell you?
Rest in peace? Nate Dog master plans amazing old school
like elite of the elite on the real true old
school stuff.
Speaker 8 (01:13:55):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
The Reds announced that a bronze sculpture of Hall of
Fame broadcaster Marty Brenneman but will be unveiled outside of
Great American Ballpark in September. So not a statue statues
go to players, right, But a sculpture of Marty Brenneman
(01:14:18):
well deserved. But I look, if you're gonna do it,
don't you just have to do both. Not that Marty
doesn't deserve his own individual recognition, but Marty and Joe
were Marty and Joe for a long like for all
(01:14:40):
of my childhood, basically into adulthood. Marty and Joe were
the voice of summer. I think that that should be
an easy thing. Marty and Joe like at a like
you build a kind of a broad cast booth setting
(01:15:02):
around them, and then you have the two of them
sitting there, a sculpture of the two of them with
a Mike. Am I wrong?
Speaker 9 (01:15:08):
Tarn?
Speaker 3 (01:15:09):
Am I crazy?
Speaker 9 (01:15:09):
Here?
Speaker 4 (01:15:10):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
Like I said, that's no disrespect to Marty, because Marty
was great in his own regard.
Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
But but don't they already have the chair the seat for.
Speaker 2 (01:15:22):
Yeah, but if you're gonna put something like out front
right like you're decorating the front door, like the statues
are out there. If you're gonna put Marty out there,
I think you need Joe with him. I don't think
it tells the story of Red's baseball just being Marty.
(01:15:42):
And again, that's nothing to take away from Marty's greatness.
Speaker 3 (01:15:46):
It's just.
Speaker 2 (01:15:48):
When I think of Red's Baseball and I when I
think of Marty Brenneman, Joe's name is always right there
in the next breath. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong
on that one. What do you think should it be
Marty and Joe or should it just be Marty?
Speaker 3 (01:16:12):
I mean, well you owe it than me.
Speaker 2 (01:16:14):
Yeah, Like I that's that's my child, like that listening
to them together. My dad walking with my dad would
bring a like a portable radio with him to listen
to the Star of the Game with Joe after the
game if we didn't, just in case we didn't get
(01:16:37):
back to the car in time to hear it on
the drive. Like I said, it's a Marty's Marty deserves.
If the Red's decision is Marty gets his own thing,
that's fine. I'm not going to be up in arms
that it's not Marty and Joe. I'm just saying when,
like if if you're putting something at the front door,
(01:17:00):
I would think it would be both of them, because
I thought they were the perfect pair. Marty little the
more critical, little, more analytical, Joe like the Reds Dave Lapham,
kind of former player, deep connections to the organization. It
(01:17:26):
meant something different to him than it does like a
professional broadcaster. But I don't know how we're looking not good,
not good. Marty's phenomenal. I no issues there if he
gets his own thing. I just don't want to forget
(01:17:49):
Joe in the in the equation.
Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
I don't think Rick fans will would forget Joe.
Speaker 2 (01:17:54):
I know, well, at some point they will tarn at
some point.
Speaker 3 (01:17:57):
How kidding you? His name is on the side of
the building, I know.
Speaker 2 (01:18:00):
But like at some point it's just the name. At
some point they're not gonna have remembered. Like you just said,
you're in a younger generation than me. Yes, but I
know who I know who the man is. But did
you grow up listening to him? No, If you go
ask Sean McMahon, what's his connection to Joe Nuxall, it's
(01:18:22):
not gonna be a deep one. It's gonna be I
know who he is, and then you go another generation
after that, and another generation after that tarn a lot
of people. There are a lot of gen Zers out
there that just think Michael Jordan's the shoe guy. That
(01:18:44):
doctor dre is the headphones guy they do as my
My daughter doesn't know. My daughter doesn't know a thing
about Michael Jordan. If she's still in the car listening,
she knows Jordan's.
Speaker 3 (01:19:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:19:05):
I'm probably I'm probably out over my skis here. But
congratulations to Marty. I think it would be a very
cool thing to have that at the out in front
of the stadium. I'd like to see Joe there with him.
How are we all ready to our number three tarn.
Speaker 3 (01:19:26):
I'm flats, were having fun.
Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
I have been having fun today. We've had a great time.
Phone lines are still open. They will be open for
the rest of the day. So if you want to
talk about Marty and Joe, better call today because we're
short Tomorrow. We are short tomorrow. I might not schedule
guests tomorrow. We might just talk basketball for talk about
(01:19:48):
what happened today, what's happening tomorrow. We might just we
might go in full Friday mode and see if we
can find something fun to come up with and talk
about tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:20:00):
Well, one local team will be playing tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:20:03):
So that's it for hour number two. We'll be back
after this. Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen.
Speaker 8 (01:20:15):
Then no one.
Speaker 1 (01:20:16):
Covers the Bengals like ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station,
our number three.
Speaker 2 (01:20:39):
It's rock and roll Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty. This is
the mo Egger Show. I am Chad Brendle filling in
promote today and tomorrow. Thank you for choosing me. Taren
(01:21:03):
and I are posted up watching the NCAA Tournament. He's
in one room, I'm in the other. What are you
watching right now?
Speaker 3 (01:21:11):
Tee? I got Clemson McNeese State on right now.
Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
I need to go back to that one I was BYU.
VCU is like my my game of the window.
Speaker 3 (01:21:22):
I feel only close game right now. We got so far?
Speaker 2 (01:21:25):
Yeah, I mean I thought I thought Georgia Gonzaga might
be a good one, but that one started twenty seven
to three Gonzaga with just over eight minutes left in
the first half. The Zags are up thirty to ten
(01:21:49):
BYU has opened up a eleven point lead at the
half on VCU thirty nine twenty eight doing most of
the damage inside Tarn Trey Aure and Kaba Cata giving
the Vcus some issues in and around the rim, which
(01:22:11):
that that wasn't how people thought that was going to go.
So I'm a big fan of the Koogs. I like
that team. They are fun to watch. Yagor Demon, as
Tarren mentioned, is going to be a heck of a
player in the NBA. UH McNee State fifty one nine
on Clemson.
Speaker 3 (01:22:33):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:22:34):
Will Wade is a heck of a basketball coach n
C State if he if he does end up with
this NC State job, which all all signs point to,
when his season is over at McNee State, he will
be the coach of the wolf Pack. They will be
a problem because he's a great basketball coach. He knows
(01:22:57):
how to recruit, and you're allowed to cheat now it's legal,
so all the things that he's from what I know,
he's not the greatest human on the planet, but there
are no police reports that he tried to choke out
his wife like some other coaches in the Power five
(01:23:18):
that are labeled similarly. I think he's gonna be really good,
especially in what has been a very weak ACC I
don't think it's going to take him much time to
get up and run it. At en C State and
then Auburn pulling away seventy six fifty five over Alabama State.
(01:23:42):
Xavier last Night, falls down thirteen fourteen points late first half,
early second half, but they do a good job handling
the onslaught from Texas because Texas, if you watch that
first half, Texas shot the lights out and they were
(01:24:03):
not a result of bad Xavier defense. They were a
result of they have a couple of really good, difficult
shot makers. Tremaine Mark and Trey Johnson are just guys
that can make tough shots. They hand in their face
(01:24:27):
on the move, doesn't matter. They can put the ball
in the basket, and they did. But Shawn Miller's team
didn't crack and they never let it get out of hand.
Every time Texas, excuse me, would get it up to eleven, twelve, thirteen,
Xavier would get it back down in that six seven,
(01:24:49):
eight point range. And then they showed the benefit of
Sean Miller's talent acquisition strategy, Go get guys that can
make shots, and they did, and they were able to
(01:25:15):
give themselves an opportunity to hang around and wait for
Texas to cool off. And Texas made four field goals
over the final thirteen minutes of the game, and that
opened the door. And sometimes you need to be fortunate
(01:25:36):
that they had two plays that broke their way that
really changed the outcome of the game. One hugely three,
which he's a decent three point shooter. He wasn't shooting
it well yesterday, as that was his only field goal
of the game, but he made it timely three, and
(01:25:59):
that was pretty clearly a decision because x had guys
on the floor that were giving them trouble. They were
gonna let Hugly have that wide open three at the
top of the key bang, and then you have the
the three that Freemantle missed to the right, didn't hit
(01:26:21):
the rim, comes straight down off the backboard and into
the hands of Daylan Swain. If that thing nicks the rim,
it probably goes in a different direction. But Swain was
at the right place at the right time. The ball
came straight to him, had the wherewithal to lay it
back up and end and give Xavier that little lift
(01:26:44):
that they needed. If you go back and watch the
games that they've struggled with, they've needed stuff like that
to happen to save them, and it hasn't. Texas couldn't
hold on Xavier continuously through out that second half, applied
game pressure. Like I said, they never let it get
(01:27:05):
away from more than eleven twelve right in there, and
then they'd they'd have a little they'd score, get a
stop and score again. Now it's back down to nine.
Now it's back down to seven. And eventually that game
pressure cracked Texas. So now AX moves on nine forty
(01:27:28):
five tomorrow night. I think nine thirty five ninety five,
Uh oh yeah, But I'm just the official listed time
for for the NCAA is is that? But here's college
sports is rearing its ugly head again, Tarren, because instead
of talking about was a what was a great basketball game?
(01:27:52):
Really was eighty six to eighty The two teams were
making high level shots. Kudos to the Xavier crowd. That
place sound incredible, Uti Arena. They took that place over
and turned it into a home game and really really
(01:28:13):
created an environment that I think down the stretch was
tough for Texas to handle. And now what happens it
was I don't think they had gone through the handshake lines, Tarn.
When Jeff Goodman tweeted out that it was expected that
Rodney Terry would be fired and that one of the
(01:28:36):
leading candidates for the job is going to be Sean Miller.
Speaker 3 (01:28:42):
And I know you can't.
Speaker 2 (01:28:43):
Control what the media is going to say, how how
things are going to react, but that's a team that
faced a lot of adversity battled through that adversity. Whether
you agree with their selection or not. They got into
the NCUBLEA tournament, into the first four after a seven
(01:29:08):
game winning streak, with every game pretty much putting their
NCUBLEA chances in peril. Have to win, have to win,
have to win, have to win, have to win, have
to win essentially seven tournament games to in the regular season.
(01:29:29):
They get in, they get a big win, and instead
of just straight being able to focus on Illinois, all
of the talk is about Texas being interested in Sean Miller.
And it's funny because this probably would have been a
thing two years ago. But remember Texas and Acts met
(01:29:54):
in the Sweet sixteen and Rodney Terry was the interim
coach at Texas, and I think there was pretty much
an understanding that if he did not win that game,
they were gonna move on. But he did took Texas
to the Elite eight, and they kept him. Fast forward
(01:30:17):
two years now, Xavier's team is going to have to
deal with the talk about Sean Miller being connected to
the Texas job they're gonna be is that Milwaukee. Yep,
(01:30:38):
they're gonna be in Milwaukee today and they're gonna have
to talk to the media, and the media is gonna
have to ask that question because that's the job of
the media. They've got to ask. Everybody's out there talking
about Sean Miller in Texas.
Speaker 3 (01:30:56):
From the outside, look at it is what's the been fits?
Speaker 8 (01:31:00):
Like?
Speaker 3 (01:31:00):
What what what more can Texas offer?
Speaker 8 (01:31:03):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:31:03):
Won a lot of money, a lot I mean Texas
is Texas like in terms of the money that comes
into that program. I think Ohio State is the only
one really that generates more. You're going to have a
larger budget to work with in terms of paying players,
(01:31:27):
so your your talent acquisition is going to be essentially
made easier. You're also going to get to work in
a state tarn that right now, I don't think anybody
is producing more basketball talent than Texas at the high
school level. But the thing that hits me is that
(01:31:58):
was a pretty good Texas team last night, right you
watched that team. They're athletic, got a couple guys that
can really play. Cayden Schdriick, athletic, big protects the rim rebounds.
Arthur Kaluma's kind of a good glue guy. You got
Mark and you've got Johnson. That the just bucket getters.
(01:32:19):
They finished fourteenth in the SEC. That league is a
monster right now? Is that really, like, is that really
the fight you want to pick? I think Sean, if
you know, if he wants it, there's plenty of jobs
(01:32:40):
that if Sean Miller really wanted to go get a
great job, he could go get Probably, I don't know
that that league is where I would do it. The
Big East at the top is still pretty strong. You
kind of just won two champamionships. Villanova, if they get
(01:33:03):
the right coach, it's not going to take long for
them to get back. Creighton has been on a good run,
Marquette has been on a good run. Saint John's now
has Rick Patino and he's a vampire, so he might
coach for another two hundred years.
Speaker 3 (01:33:24):
But wouldn't you much.
Speaker 2 (01:33:25):
Rather try to navigate that then try to navigate what's
happening in the SEC right now?
Speaker 3 (01:33:34):
I mean I would, But I mean, but you know,
money talks.
Speaker 2 (01:33:38):
Yeah, I mean, here's the thing. If you're Sean and
I don't really know Sean, So I'm not gonna speak
for Sean, but just thinking about like the pros and
cons Sewn has been at Arizona. He has been at
a place where resources were never a problem. You never
(01:33:59):
had to like really go work to fundraise or to
you know, to get the money that you want to
get something done, to do like a foreign tour, or
to do you know, if you need a new basketball
(01:34:19):
facility or whatever the case may be. It's pretty easy
to get that money. At Xavier, it's a lot more
of a challenge. So you wonder, Sean is the one
Sewan did this. I'm not Sean's the one that said
he traded from a buick up to Alexis. And sometimes
(01:34:42):
when you've driven a luxury car and then you have
to go back to the buick, your eyes are always
on the luxury cars at the dealership, right, So you wonder.
But he has said he and his wife are happy here.
They just I believe they're building or just built a
new house in Indian Hill. Quality of life pressure cooker,
(01:35:09):
Texas is a pressure cooker. Go back over the last
group of coaches that have been there. They get chewed
up and spit out pretty quick. I thought if he
could have gotten Ohio State, that made a lot more
sense than potentially going down there and dealing with potentially
(01:35:32):
unrealistic expectations and a league where you can be really good.
You can be an NC double a tournament team and
finish six and twelve in conference. And I hate that
the Xavior team now instead of getting to focus on
trying to make a run. So I think they're better
(01:35:54):
than Illinois, and I think they'd have a shot at Kentucky. Now,
everybody's going to want to talk about the Texas job
being open, and I think that stinks. That's not fair
that immediately after the game last night, Like I said,
I don't think Sean had finished shaking hands with the
(01:36:14):
Texas players when Jeff Goodman put out that he is
going to be a candidate for the Texas job. I
hate it, and that's coming from some Look, they've been
doing this a long time. I've been working at Bearcat
Journal for eighteen years. I've seen a lot of coaching changes.
(01:36:36):
I've seen a lot of different styles of coaching changes.
It shouldn't get in the way of a group trying
to make a deep run in a national tournament. I
just don't know how you fix it. I don't know
how you change it because Texas lost and Rodney Terry's
going to get fired, and the national media's job is
(01:36:58):
to talk about it. It's unfortunate that there's not a
way we can hold this off until after the NCAA tournament,
much like the transfer portal, which, by the way, the
transfer portal opens on Monday, and that's why teams got
(01:37:18):
to move fast. If our mines are open. If you've
got an opinion, let me hear it. Five one, three,
seven four nine, fifteen thirty. This is Cincinnati Sports Station
ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:37:32):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (01:37:35):
Traffic from the uc Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 7 (01:37:38):
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center offers innovative clinical trials
and the region's only young onset colarectal cancer program called
five one three, five eighty five UCCC westbound seventy four
accident on the right shoulder, that one approaching to seventy
five on Ridge Avenue. It's an accident at Woodford Road.
(01:38:00):
Their accident work road at Ebenezer and on seventh that's
an accident over at Broadway. I'm at ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 3 (01:38:18):
Less not big, open up the gap.
Speaker 2 (01:38:25):
Hey, oh wait, welcome back. It's not easy SBN fifteen thirty.
But uh, it looks like Victor Lockin's career is over tearing.
Speaker 8 (01:38:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:38:36):
I just seen that out.
Speaker 2 (01:38:38):
Did you see how? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:38:39):
It got technical?
Speaker 2 (01:38:41):
What a weak technical there was. There was a McNee
State player tried a monster dunk and missed it, and
there was a foul called, and then vict looked like
he found him. But the two guys are kind of
just standing there, like, you know, chin to shoulder, and
(01:39:05):
Tony Padilla comes in and just makes an awful technical
foul call. They weren't gonna fight. Nobody was talking like
why why, why do you need to call it technical there?
Why do you need to insert your safe I hate
hate collegiate officiating, Taran. We saw something very similar in
(01:39:32):
the in the Louisville Creighton game. Louisville trying to get
back in it, making a little, a little bit of
a run three point shooter from Louisville. After the shot
is released, gets his elbow hit.
Speaker 3 (01:39:49):
Pack House.
Speaker 2 (01:39:50):
He wants a foul call, of course he does. I
don't know if I would have called it would have
been pretty pretty ticky tack if they would have called
the foul. But as an official, you have to know
that that coach is going to be upset. He's not
going to be thrilled that as the team is trying
to make a comeback, something like that doesn't get called.
(01:40:10):
Pat Kelsey didn't do anything crazy, He just disagreed with
the official, and what happens. The official gives Pat Kelsey
a technical So instead of Louisville potentially having three free
throws to even cut more into what was a shrinking
(01:40:34):
Craton lead at that point, you not only didn't get that,
now Creighton gets two free throws and the ball because
the rest got thin skin. Give me a break, Just
call the game. If you make a call and the
(01:40:56):
coach didn't happy about it, unless he's cussing your mom,
let it go. If you can't handle a coach telling
you he thought you made a bad call, you shouldn't
be officiating. And again, I thought it was probably the
right call. I probably wouldn't have called a foul. But
(01:41:20):
you know, Pat Kelsey's gonna be upset. He's fighting for
his team's life. He doesn't want their season to end.
Emotions are high. Quit inserting yourself into the action, into
the outcome. Essentially ridiculous. Clemson's probably not gonna come back,
(01:41:49):
but they certainly stood a better chance with Victor Lockin
on the floor, and you tee him up for standing
there and looking at a guy stupid. See it's not
just UC games. I hate college officiating period. I thought
(01:42:10):
last night was another example. I thought for a long time,
especially in that first half, the game was being called
differently on both on one end of the floor compared
to the other. I thought Texas was allowed to play
a lot more physical than Xavier was, and it hurts
my heart to say that, Tarren. But then finally the
(01:42:34):
whistle evened out. I thought Xavier was allowed to defend
and be a little bit more physical than what they
were allowed early in the game, and then eventually.
Speaker 3 (01:42:46):
Xavior got the lead took it home.
Speaker 2 (01:42:50):
I just think college officiating stupid, and I think those
guys a lot of them are pretty bad at their job,
especially for whatever reason, the one that they consider the
best are the ones that always make the worst calls.
How does that work? I saw in the Big Twelve
tournament Doug Sermons, who I think is one of the
(01:43:12):
worst officials in the country. Doug's a great official. He'll
probably be working the Final four this year. Then the
Final four is probably going to have a controversial call
or two that impacts the outcome of a game, stake
a break. Phone lines are open five on three, seven, four, nine,
(01:43:33):
fifteen thirty. This is Cincinnati Sports Station ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 5 (01:43:38):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 6 (01:43:42):
Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center.
Speaker 7 (01:43:45):
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Center offers innovative clinical trials
and the region's only young onset colarectal cancer program. Call
five one, three five eighty five UCCC westbound seventy four
exident the right shoulder approaching two seventy five. Some slow
traffic from North Bend Road on Work Road. Another accident
(01:44:06):
at Ebenezer and seventh. Another crash at Broadway. Police on
their working to clear on that ezelic with traffic.
Speaker 18 (01:44:14):
This report is ESPN fifteen thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:44:28):
Chess Waking up Bend the morning.
Speaker 15 (01:44:30):
Gotta thank God.
Speaker 2 (01:44:32):
I don't know what today.
Speaker 3 (01:44:33):
Bug my Wagger's show.
Speaker 2 (01:44:36):
Not Moager, no small, Chad Brendakfast, no man, I got much.
Everybody He's enjoying day one hooked it.
Speaker 3 (01:44:47):
Up later.
Speaker 2 (01:44:49):
Comes in trying, scratching, fighting, clawing. After scoring thirteen points
in the first half, they have scored forty in the second.
Eighty six seconds left McNee State or McNeice. They get
rid of the State McNeice up sixty two fifty three.
(01:45:13):
Vic Lockin has unfortunately fouled out on a bad technical
call by Tony Padilla. Make it a ten point game.
Sixty three fifty three one twenty six to go BYU
cruising now early in the second half. Middle of the
second half, they are up fifty six thirty nine on VCU.
(01:45:40):
BYU has only lost one game in their last I
think eleven. I think they're ten and one in their
last eleven. Tearn that only loss was to Houston. I
gotta tell you what text out the air. I gotta
tell you what text I got about the BYU Houston game.
Speaker 8 (01:46:00):
Tarn.
Speaker 2 (01:46:01):
You'll enjoy it. But they're upout fifty six thirty nine,
twelve thirty two to go, and then Gonzaga at half
forty eight twenty seven lead over Georgia. So not many
upsets and a lot of a lot of blowouts. If
(01:46:21):
you missed the first round of games Auburn Beech, Alabama
State eighty three sixty three, Houston seventy eight to forty
over SIU Edwardsville, Wisconsin eighty five sixty six over Montana
Produced seventy five sixty three over High Point, and then
Creighton eighty nine, seventy six, seventy five. Excuse me over
(01:46:44):
the Louisville Cardinals. Uh, Tarran, are you are you familiar
with any of the rule changes the NFL is proposing.
Speaker 4 (01:46:56):
I've seen the one where the Packers they want to
ban the toush push.
Speaker 3 (01:47:00):
What do you think?
Speaker 2 (01:47:01):
Do you know what happened here in nineteen eighty eight, Karren?
That's what this whole thing kind of reminded me of.
I was not alive, so no so Sam Weish was
using the no huddle offense. The Bengals were really the
first team to no huddle, and it was heavily scrutinized
(01:47:25):
around the league, and the Buffalo Bills and Marv Levy
whine like little you know whats and they had it removed,
They had it basically outlawed in a playoff game, and
the Bengals still won the playoff game obviously went to
(01:47:48):
the Super Bowl that year, But then in nineteen eighty
nine it went up for a vote and the NFL
decided that it was legal and just uh, don't suck
and figure it out how to defend it. And that's
where I'm at on the Toush push.
Speaker 3 (01:48:07):
Figure it out.
Speaker 2 (01:48:09):
It's your job to defend a play just because the play.
What kind of world are we living in where the
play is too good so it has to be banned?
Are you in or out on the Toush push? I mean,
just stop them. Is it difficult? Yeah, it's not supposed
(01:48:33):
to be easy. It's professional sports.
Speaker 3 (01:48:35):
But the thing is, you see other teams try to
do and they can't.
Speaker 2 (01:48:38):
Do They can't do it as well. Part of it
is that Jalen Hurts is freakishly strong, freakishly strong, but
they know know how to do it. The other teams don't.
Speaker 4 (01:48:52):
Other teams try to do it, they say, oh, we
can't do us. Lets a band it right, get good bro.
Speaker 11 (01:48:59):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:48:59):
The other one that was interesting to me, Tarn is
the the change to seting potentially in the playoffs, where
division winners will still be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs,
but the seeding of the playoffs would be based on record.
Speaker 3 (01:49:21):
I like that.
Speaker 4 (01:49:24):
There's no way the NFC South should have home games
and they're finishing a win above five hundred.
Speaker 3 (01:49:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:49:32):
The only thing that I will say is it should
winning your division should mean something. And I guess if
you're saying that gets you into the playoffs, like, it
keeps some meaning.
Speaker 4 (01:49:50):
But when you have a division like the NFC North
last year where you got three teams who finished above
the NFC West.
Speaker 2 (01:49:59):
Yeah, well you're obviously not going to be I don't know.
I I thought Evan Cohen actually had a pretty interesting
thought on it this morning when I was taking the
kid to school, and he said, the seating stays the same,
seed them all the same.
Speaker 3 (01:50:18):
Okay, but if you have a game.
Speaker 2 (01:50:24):
Where the wild card team has a better record, they
get the home game. So you don't do it as
like a blanket rule. You do it in individual situations.
Like Minnesota would have gotten a home game in the
first round in the wildcard round because they had a
(01:50:45):
better record than the division winner that they faced, but
the seating would have stayed the same. So you know how,
like they redo it in the next round. The team
that gets the bye plays the worst team that's left. Yep,
the seating would stay the same, but the team with
the better record would get the home game. I wouldn't
(01:51:06):
mind that compromise. I think that makes more sense than
just doing it strictly by record.
Speaker 4 (01:51:16):
Then, also, like the I think it was I seemed Detroit,
they said no more automatic first downs for like a
legal contact. Yeah, yeah, five yard penalty should not be
automatic first downs.
Speaker 2 (01:51:27):
I agree. If you think the penalty only deserves five yards,
you shouldn't get an automatic first down for it. This
got of the phones. Mark's online too, Mark, what's up man?
Speaker 9 (01:51:40):
Hey?
Speaker 10 (01:51:40):
Jay?
Speaker 9 (01:51:40):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (01:51:41):
I'm having a great time Today. Show has gone by
incredibly fast. There's nothing better sitting here talking sports while
watching the NCAA tournament. So I've told myself.
Speaker 10 (01:51:51):
Anyway, Yeah, I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:51:56):
A Zaber guy, and I'm sorry.
Speaker 10 (01:51:58):
I enjoyed last night. Say you know that there's are
two kinds of people in the world, don't you, Those
of us who went to Zager and those of those
of you who did not go in.
Speaker 9 (01:52:09):
Wish you would have.
Speaker 2 (01:52:10):
I thought you meant people that agree with me and
people that don't.
Speaker 10 (01:52:18):
Hey, I want to tell you this. I listened to
this station every day usually in the morning. Listen up
the reruns all the games.
Speaker 9 (01:52:27):
Of the days before.
Speaker 10 (01:52:29):
I listen live between noon and three. Love the show.
Speaker 9 (01:52:34):
Thank you guys are great.
Speaker 10 (01:52:35):
Keep our city at least, you know, it's the point
of where you can educated on all the sports that
are in the area.
Speaker 9 (01:52:44):
Yes, sir, and you personally.
Speaker 10 (01:52:48):
Have to do a great job. Listen to you. You
don't not on there all that often. But when you are.
Speaker 19 (01:52:56):
Off that, what I was gonna say is do you
who Jimmy's Falia is from Fox News?
Speaker 2 (01:53:09):
I don't.
Speaker 9 (01:53:11):
Yeah, Okay, he's got.
Speaker 10 (01:53:13):
A show on Fox News on Saturday night. And you
two sound a lot alike. Well your voices sound Is.
Speaker 2 (01:53:21):
That a compliment? And all right, sweet arm we're going national?
Speaker 19 (01:53:30):
Yeah, Taron and you can go. There's other two guys behind.
Speaker 2 (01:53:35):
Yeah, I forget them.
Speaker 3 (01:53:40):
Yeah, I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (01:53:43):
