Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, we I believe we're moments away from connecting
with a guy in Spain who's a big Bengals fan,
since the Bengals are playing in Madrid in November. First
things first, PGA Championship is happening not in Madrid, but
in the suburban Philadelphia at aronom Inc. Will Grimmer is
with us the second greatest golfer to ever come from
Ohio State Law fifty nine.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
He'll teach a lessons, am I saying that?
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Right?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
How do you pronounce the name of this golf course?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
I think it's ironom Inc. Yeah, okay, very good.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
So fun fact, the architect who designed ironom Inc also
designed Mcatiwa. So both wow tournaments this week, same style
golf course.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
So this is just outside of West Philadelphia.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yes, yes, you know.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
They haven't been to Philly for a major in thirteen
years since the US Open at Marion and justin Rosewan.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
So it's gonna be Philly's very excited.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
All right, Philly's got to be very excited, more excited
than they are for the Philadelphia seventy six ers who
lost to the Knicks. Sorry, uh, what type of player
does this golf course favor?
Speaker 3 (01:01):
This golf course is long.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
I believe they've added between three and four hundred yards
since they last played. What the termament last week was
the truest several years ago. With Charlotte being a anchor
site for the PGA, so they rotate that around. So
this is a Some players on the PJ Tour have
played this golf course, but it hasn't looked quite like
it has. It's going to favor someone who hits the
(01:24):
ball along, who hits the ball straight, and it's gonna
be cool and potentially windy over there this week, so
it's going to be a little bit more of a
i'd say US Open style test and maybe some PG Championships.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
All right, So give me an idea of like one
or two storylines that, like a casual golf fan should
be paying attention to this weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
I would say the number one story, even though it's
kind of like overplayed. It was almost like the Bengals
winning a playoff game like every single year. Is Jordan
Speith going into this week has the opportunity for the
career Grand Slam. I would say Rory kind of almost
overshaded that with the Masters each year, But the reality
is he's the only current player that has an opportunity
to win the career Glens Grant Slight at least this week,
(02:05):
and then Scotty has a chance to do with the
US hope.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
So I read golf websites.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I go to golf dot Com, I go to a
golf digest, I got to gambling websites like the Action Network.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Everybody loves Cam Young this weekend.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Well he's my favorite too, Okay, so explain Well, I
just I think for him, it was a confidence thing
and probably a little bit of a mental breakthrough to
get that first win, and he did that last year,
and then he he switched golf balls to a different
make and model earlier this year within titleist, and I like,
(02:37):
clearly it's working for him because he won the Players
and he just won again a few weeks ago, and
so he's already got two wins on the year. He's
already essentially tripled his win total in basically as many
as about four or five weeks here, and I just
feel like his confidence is high. He's playing great golf.
He bombs the ball, and that's certainly going to be
an advantage, but he's also he's finding a lot of fairways.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Is is short games in a great spot.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
You mentioned changing golf balls, so I want you to
elaborate on that for me, because to me, every golf
ball is the same.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
I lose them all doesn't matter, but what is the difference.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
So there's a lot of Every company, I would say,
within their kind of tour department is probably going to
release about somewhere between the neighborhood of like five to
eight different variations of golf balls. And they all have
different cores, different materials being made, and they're all to
impact the things that players prefer. Softness, firmness, high spinning,
low spinning, maybe total trajectory, all higher or lower flying ball.
(03:33):
And again these things are very very important to the
high level of golfer, just that next kind of level
of intricacy that defines the game.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Now, you may have a sponsor obligation when I ask
you this question, But if I need a sleeve of
balls for one round, which for me, I need more
than a sleeve, what should I get.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Titlest Okay, that's gonna be the answer. They are indeed
the number one ball in golf, so that's going to
be my answer.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Very good, Let me run a couple of golfers pasture.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Okay, if Oberg's at plus two thousand, top ten in
five of his last six tournaments, steer me away or
steer me tortum.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
I love.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
I love betting any kind of like a top ten
or a top twenty five. Okay, you know, and at
the same time you're correct, Like I was just pulling
up strokes game teed de Green here and he's seventh
on the list. And if you look at the other
names on this list, you have Rory, you have Commore Cowi,
you have Fitzpatrick, you have Scotty, you have Cameron, and
now you have Levig. So again, all those players our favorites.
He certainly belongs in the conversation, and I think it's
(04:30):
more a matter of his only downside is his ability
to close on Sundays and so. But you know, the
other theory is that he's due to win with Scotty Scheffler.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
A lot of folks are going to say, look, he
is still the top rated player in the world.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
He's the best player in the world. Take that.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
When you're getting plus odds, would you will in any
golf tournament? I think I saw plus four hundred for Scotty.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
It's it's certainly it's certainly not bad.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Bet Okay, you know Scotty at the end of the day,
he kind of he's starting to move into the tiger
category for me, which is, you know, until you prove
me wrong, you kind of have my vote. I mean,
let's face it, a lot of people didn't think Scotty
played that well the Masters, and we kind of sneeze
on the fact that he lost by I believe one shot.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yeah, and for about five minutes on Sunday you thought, boy,
he may do this right.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
He's always lurking, He's always in the conversation.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Care where you are, where he is.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
If you're at the top of the leaderboard, you're still
looking over your proverbial shoulder.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Yes, he's starting to create the quote Scotty effect, kind
of like the type where you see his name on
a Sunday and you start to hit the panic button
a little bit. So he's definitely he's definitely a favorite
for show.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Do you have any long shots that you might go look?
Their odds aren't great, but why not there's good value here.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
I really like Ricky Faller just because he's back in
the field in a major this week. It's not the Masters, right,
You're back to a full field of one hundred and
fifty plus guys and he just shot a Sunday sixty
five last week. It's kind of weird saying it for
a guy that like was is and was as popular
as Ricky is, but like he's totally flying under the radar.
(06:05):
He's later in his career, the like he doesn't have
to do the press conferences anymore about like when you're
going to win a major, bue because people almost don't
care about him as much anymore. And I think it
puts him like to me, he just seems to be
playing a lot of good golf this year, and I
could just see him freewheeling and having some fun next
week and getting in contention.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
I like the change of the PGA Championship they made
a couple of years ago where it was kind of
buried in August, and now it's it's shortly after augusta,
it's before the US opened, so that the major's calendar
everything is really tight.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Right, it's over by late July.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Do you like where they have situated the PGA Championship
here in the middle of May.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I do. I do.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
I think it just creates a little bit more continuity
if like the Masters was like kind of way out
on an island and then you got the three and
over three months at the end of the year. And
I also think with the Olympics is starting to get
more and more respect and so with that being every
four years in August, it doesn't put them in an
awkward position of like what do you do about the
PA and the Olympics? And so it just the weather
(07:03):
still is good enough in the north, like it's gonna
be good weather in Philly. You can still have it
all over the country in May, and it's uh.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
I think it's a good for the I always felt
like once you got past the Open Championship, the PGA
Championship was on an island, like it was sort of
like the forgotten Major, And now it takes center stage
here in the middle of May, which is prime golf season.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
I tell a lot of people like I actually think
over the last half decade to a decade, the PGA
has been the most entertaining major because it's had the
most playoffs and it's had the most finishes within one shot.
And I think they pick a wider variety of styles
of courses, like they'll go to just vastly different climates
and places, whereas like the US opens notoriously difficult, the
(07:41):
Masters is Augusta, and obviously the British is overseas. So
I think there's a fun variety to the PGA, and
it just it always produces excitement on Sunday. So to
the casual golf fan, it's you could make a case
for it being the most entertaining to watch on a
Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
I'm gonna go out to Mcatiejuah this weekend and I'm
going to watch the PGA Championship from suburb Be in Philadelphia,
and then I'm gonna get the itch right and I'm
gonna want to fix my swing.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
What can you do for me?
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Well, you can come down and see me at my
facility at LAF fifty nine. And we've we've made some
good progress with you.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Now, well those who have played with me would debate that,
but that is more of a statement about me and
less of an indictment on you.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
But yes, we've we've made some tweaks and they have
paid off. The hybrid.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
We started making some serious I.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Am no, I am no longer unwilling to take the
hybrid out of the bag. And I told you this
winter I cannot hit this club, so I don't even try.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
And now I at least bring it out. It at
least makes its appearance.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
All right?
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Where can folks learn more or sign up for lessons? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (08:40):
So my Instagram page post a lot of videos and
content there as well as YouTube, Instagram, Willie g Underscore,
Loft fifty nine, Twitter, Grimmer twelve underscore well, and then
my countylinkcounty dot com backslash will Grimmer Golf.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
All right, will thanks so much lost Loft fifty nine.
That's our golf expert that you see
