Speaker 1 (00:00):
WCKY Cincinnati and iHeartRadio station Garan teed Human ESPN fifteen thirty.
I heard Radio twenty two after four. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty. Monegger, Breneman and Jones on Baseball is thirty
minutes away. We have all the reds injury stuff that
we have to work through that might take a while.
(00:22):
That is coming up next hour. I mentioned earlier. We
are stoked for the second consecutive year. On Thursday of
next week, we get a chance to broadcast from Mcatewah
Country Club for the Kroger Queen City Championship, which is
presented by P ANDNG. It's the LPGA Tour in Cincinnati,
an awesome event. They were so awesome to work with,
so hospitable to us, and earlier on the calendar a
(00:44):
different venue, but it's still going to be great and
it's really cool as we look ahead next weekend to
have the Pride of King's High School of Clemson and
the US Virgin Islands local product who is going to
be playing in this event. She is on the European Tour,
Ladies European Tour. Alex Swain is with us. It's awesome
to have you in studio. Awesome, And you brought me
golf balls.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I did. I'm hopefully that you can use them.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Well. I will probably lose some between now and when
I leave, because that's what I do. When I get
my hand on golf balls, I lose them. But that's
a new rule. If you're on the show, you should
bring me golf balls, so you set a precedent.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
You know, I'm here for that.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Welcome. It's awesome to have you.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
No, we were just talking off air. You're on the
European Tour. Cincinnati is home, but you're never actually home,
right right, So just in the last like four months,
give me an idea of the places you've been.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
So I started off the year in the United States,
Virgin Islands, I was on Saint Thomas. Came back to Cincinnati,
and then I went to South Africa for two events,
flew over to Australia, and then from Australia I was
supposed to go to Dubai, but sadly things happened. Went
back to the United States for two weeks, and then
(01:57):
went back to South Africa and just went to Mauritius
and now I'm back.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Wow, a lot of a lot of sky miles, Like,
how does that work?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah? United has been great. They have some good flights
I've been taking. Yeah, I mean I try and take
the cheapest option and then go from there. But I
have the credit cards. I'm pretty smart with what I'm doing,
and I get free bags.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
So all right, that works out pretty well. But this
this coming of it, it's a home game for you,
which you are a member of, correct, so a little
home course advantage.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yes, I became an honorary member last year.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Okay, yes, And what do you have to do to
be an honorary member?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Be very nice?
Speaker 1 (02:39):
Okay, all right, that's the case.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Maybe no nonsense, okay, So for their what I was
able to do is I hold a professional tour card.
But I started off training out there. Dave Barr, the
head pro, allowed me to go out there and I
did some work for them and help them out, and
the members were happy to have me. So now I'm
(03:03):
an honor remember, but.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Are the other players going to be like, yeah, but
she knows the courses. I mean, how's that work? That's
just a tough one. Yeah, tough fuck, very good. I'm
sure some other players get some advantages and no doubt.
How cool will it be to play in this event
in your hometown?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, I mean I couldn't ask for a better golf
course and a better city to be having it it
and obviously getting to stay in my own bed and
see my team the whole week and there to support
me is you can't match that.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
This event and it's it's had different venues and this
is a venue change. Mcatwa is awesome at least I'm told.
I've been there to MC events. They don't let me
play golf there, but that's okay. To have the LPGA
Tour in your hometown, an event that is thriving has
to to make you feel really good.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got to get you out there,
so they'll be there.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
I'm going to be there on Thursday.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, we can play after the event when I'm back
in town whenever that is, we.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Really will play. Now, let me ask you a question.
When you you play professional golf, right, if you and
I play, is this going to be like, Hey, we
load up the cart, put some beers in it, I
maybe have a cigar, and we have a good time.
Or is it like you're just gonna try to embarrass
me I.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Think you'll do that on your your own, but no,
it'll be a fun little.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Are you capable of playing casual golf with people?
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yeah? Yeah, I think you have to have that switch
on and off, Okay, or then I mean it's not
it's not fun, right, So yeah, we'll definitely have some fun.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
All right. So when I'm struggling to break ninety and
you're you know, you know, putting a much lower number
on the card, you're gonna not get because I know
what it's like to play with not professional golfers, but
really they get. Hey, you know what, let's call it
call it a day after night. Hold, you're not gonna
do that to me?
Speaker 2 (04:45):
No, no, no, we'll we'll get some cigars going, we'll
get some drinks in for you, and you'll be fine.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Uh. For those who have never been to an LPGA
or professional golf event, now you're a competitor, so the
experience is different than a fan. But what what does
it give folks? That's an idea of what it's going
to be like if they get tickets and go out
to MCATEWA next weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Well, I'm sure there's gonna be a fan zone. There's
gonna be lots of sponsors that are trying to get
you to see their products and stuff like this, but
you're just gonna be watching some elite players play the
game that they love.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
I know. They have tents all across the golf course
and they've got areas where you can watch players hidd
into greens and you can follow certain groups. You're just
you're out there to watch girls play golf.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
You started playing golf when you were twelve, yes, right.
When did it become abundantly clear that you had a
chance to make a living playing professional golf or at
least get played high major college golf at Clemson?
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Well, I would say at Clemson, I didn't really know
what I want to do. But then I played the
US Open in twenty twenty and I was like, Okay, yeah,
this is exactly what I want to do right now.
That was like the best of the best, and the
field and the environment is like top notch. So that's
(06:00):
what I thought all the terms where you feel like, yeah,
but this week is going to be like that as well.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
When did you go from like a young lady who's
playing golf twelve thirteen years old to somebody who's like
you know what, I'm going to take it seriously and
do more than maybe just play high school golf.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Oh gosh. I kind of always had that outlook to
give it my all pursue it. Yeah, but it was
until after college that I really really took I would say,
but I mean.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
To play college golf, you had to take it more
seriously than when it's college.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Like you have to go to school, you have to
show up for.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Your you graduate in three years.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I did so.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
I mean, wasn't that bit of a wart when you
figure it out? You know, I didn't play golf and
I barely got through fourth so so, but like there
had to be a moment where you're like, you know what,
there's lots of twelve and thirteen year olds. They play,
their dad takes them out, their mom takes them out.
Maybe they played competitively, but not all of them play
acc golf.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yes, right, I think I Yeah, I had the the
mind for it. I think I just really enjoyed golf
and I did it.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
All day long, non stop, just hitting balls.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, which maybe could have been my fault, but it
was it was all I cared about.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, and then out of college, now you're on the
European Tour. How does one join the European Tour.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
I played Q school in I think it was December
and Spain and I placed very well and then just
kept my card throughout the time till now.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
So you get to choose the events you're going to
play it.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Yes, but it depends where you rank on the tour
if you can get in. But I can choose my
own schedule based off of what I can get in.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
What is the most difficult part of bouncing around the
planet playing golf?
Speaker 2 (07:45):
The time zones and the flights, Like I just had
a sixteen hour flight from Johannesburg and I had to
see the Fizzier yesterday, which was very helpful but needed
some alignment. Yeah, with my Pelvison back. But I'm I'm
all good now.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
All right? Where where? What's I mean, I'm not gonna
I've never heard of most I mean, I've heard of Johannesburg.
But the courses themselves. Where's like the coolest course abroad
that you've played.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Well, the coolest course is Makatua.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
But of course, yes, yes, but that's that's not abroad.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
It is true abroad, I love the golf course it's
in evy On. Okay, I think it's called avy on
the golf course.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
And where is that?
Speaker 2 (08:23):
It's in France, but you fly into Switzerland and you
drive to France. Okay, and it's where they have the
Avon Championship, which is a major, and we get to
play there on the Lazy European Tour. We have an
event there.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Now the goal you want to join the LPGA full time? Correct?
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (08:38):
How do we make that happen?
Speaker 2 (08:40):
We place Q school, or we win a lot of
l ET events and we can get better points and
try to work our way up the ranking. Or we
can just win this week.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Now you I asked her where a home is? A
home is Cincinnati? You're from here, but you spend when
you're not hopscotching around Europe. You're in Saint Thomas, yes,
most of your So I grew.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Up part time Saint Thomas, part time in Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Right.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
I was born in Cincinnati. My mother's side's from Cincinnati,
but I started a lot of my junior golf in
the Caribbeans.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Okay, So you have your sweatshirt US Virgin Islands. You're
like an ambassador I am. How do you get that job.
How do you get that gig?
Speaker 2 (09:20):
I don't know. I just knew some people. But no,
I represent the islands. It's a pleasure to represent them,
three beautiful islands.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
But so you live on Saint Thomas, which I've been
lucky enough to go to. I love it. I would
would love to go back as soon as possible. There's
no golf courses there.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Yeah, Unfortunately in twenty seventeen, two category five hurricanes knocked
out the golf course and they haven't rebuilt it. So
I hit golf balls on a field by the airport. Okay,
but I do get some golf in. Or I fly.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Is this legal?
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Yes? Okay, all right, it's not a golf course. It's
just field, just a field. Or I fly to Saint Croix,
which has two golf courses.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
Okay, which is just such of those are money, I
witch of those are rugby.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
No one of them is gorgeous. It's on the water.
It's a little bit of a resorty. And then one's
in like the rainforest of Saint Croix.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Yeah, So we have options.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
Okay, So you just you grab the bag, you jump
on a plane, you hop over to Saint Croix and
you play a team.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yes, but but we make a trip out of it.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Okay, Yeah, I mean I put the bag in the
car and I drive over to Newman golf Course and
it's very nice. It's very similar to playing golf after
flying on an airplane to Saint Croix.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
You know, it builds character. You have to make the
most of it. And I've learned every single lie that
you could have, thick, thin, rocky sandy, So I think, yeah,
just builds well round a golfer.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
What do you do when you're not playing golf and
you're in Saint Thomas, there's no shortage of things to do.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
I fish, I go to the beach, I swim. I
have a dog here in Cincanti. His name is Bruce.
I came out with him. Yeah. My sister is in Cincinnati,
So okay. I try and to do what I can
to get off the golf course. But I'm a se
on the golf I'm literally a member of a golf
course in Mason just so I can go fishing.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
So fish at the lake? Wow? All right, well maybe
there's a fish you know. Fisher woman, I guess would
be the appropriate term in your future. Professional I've got
it once you're done with professional golf next weekend mcintee. Whah,
it's gonna be awesome. And watching this event grow has
been really cool. Watching it become a huge part of
(11:27):
the Cincinnati sports landscape has been fun. And getting getting
a chance to do our show from from the tournament.
You'll be busy next Thursday, so will I don't know, Well,
we're on. You're gonna you don't want to break off
a little sit down with us after you play a team,
but it'll be it'll be cool to see you.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I can definitely do that.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Best of luck, thank you very And if you need
anybody on the bag, I mean sat there.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
We've had a slight change in caddy, but I've got
an actual Cincinnati local on the bag. He caddies on
Corn Ferry one LPGA, but I knew I've them a
few times. What's his name, Max Foley?
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Okay, he actually.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Started off caddying at Makativa because they have a caddy program.
So he's on the bag all right.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
If things fall through for him, I'll get you need
somebody to lug the bag.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Around, You'll be my first call.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
And because that'll be as close as I actually get
to being on that golf course, so that would be
and I'll be there to provide. I don't know, you
want to hit the seven iron here? You know there'll
be I'll help you out. Awesome to have you. Best
of luck. Thank you for the golf balls. You're welcome,
and we need more guests who bring me golf balls
and these will be all gone before you play four
(12:35):
rounds at mcat Way.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
I can assure you that, okay, cool and.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Then and then at some point we'll get out and
play and.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
The next time we play, I'll bring some more.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
The next time we play.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Excuse me, the first time.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
We first time you are I could I know how
this is going to go down. We're gonna play like
three or four holes. You're gonna start looking at your phone.
We're gonna get to the tourney. You're gonna go, Hey,
I gotta go. I can't. I can't play with this
guy anymore. But I would be honored. Best of luck
next week. It's an awesome event. We are going to
be rooting for you and we can't wait to be there. Yes,
the Kroger Queens City Championship presented by P ANDNG is
(13:06):
going to be next weekend at mcintee, while starting on Thursday,
will broadcast and we can't wait for it. Alex Swain,
the pride of a King's High School, Clemson University, and
the US Virgin Islands. Can you give me like a
break on an Airbnb in Saint John or something like that.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Yes, yes, we can work on that.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
Wow, I'm just gonna keep asking for Stuffy. It is
twenty four minutes away from five o'clock, Alex Austin to
meet you. Thank you so much. This is ESPN fifteen thirty,
Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic
