And fifteen thirty. What's up goodafter that? Maleagor ESPF fifteen thirty,
Thank you so much for listening.Hope your weekend is off to a terrific
start. We have pretty loaded today. Full show preview is available on X.
I'm gonna just start doing what Elonwants me to do in paulin X

(00:20):
on X at Moleger. Thanks toour friends at Emery Federal Credit Union,
your credit union with heart since nineteenthirty nine. That's a long time,
eighty five years. Go to EMORYFCUdot org. Sam LeCure is going to
be with us in about thirty minutes. We are going to talk about I
think Tony said something that really mademe think, which that's not the first
time that's happened. Perhaps the mostunlikely Reds victory, I'm gonna say,

(00:44):
since Game one of the twenty twelveNational League Division Series. More on that
coming up in just a bit.Devin Kerr is uh with Apple TV has
FC Cincinnati versus Saint Louis tomorrow. He's gonna be with us at four to
twenty and we're going to go toLouisville. Jed Demuci, who used to
be on Channel twelve. You know, this guy thinks I'm gonna pop back

(01:06):
into town. He moved to Charlestonabout a year and a half ago.
Pop back into town, drive downto Louisville, hang out with his buddies,
check out the PGA Championship. Andhe's doing that, but he is
on site of Frankly, a placethat has provided the stage for one of
the more bizarre stories that I canrecall, and so I just want to

(01:26):
know what it's like down there. So Jed's gonna join us from the golf
course at four thirty three. We'llgive away some hooting in the blowfish tickets
at five twenty. I'll be honestwith you, I don't have much to
add to the Scottie Scheffler situation.First of all, it at the heart
of it all is a very sad, tragic, extremely unfortunate event. And
for all the fun we're having withthe Scotti Scheffler thing, and for as

(01:47):
funny as a lot of people havebeen, at the end of the day,
at the heart of this story isa human being who lost their life
and that should not be forgotten.Above and beyond that, in addition to
that, more than anything else,I can't tell you another time where in
the morning I've been watching Sports Centerand get up and I've just been like,

(02:08):
what, like what I do?Think in a weird way, this
is great for the PGA Championship. There are people I know who typically on
a Friday afternoon will not be payingattention to a golf tournament that are following
Scott Scheffler and every single stroke thathe takes. So Jed's gonna join us.
At four thirty three. Last night, the Reds beat the Dodgers.

(02:31):
Clobbered the Dodgers seven to two.A team with a bad record beating a
team with a good record in MajorLeague Baseball happens all the time. There's
no real such thing, especially inthe regular season, as a major upset.
Now. I mean, if theReds went to LA and swept the

(02:52):
Dodgers four straight, that's I guessthat would fall out of the category of
major upset. But you know howthis sport works. If the Reds end
up taking three out of four fromLA, it might not be likely,
might be surprising, it's not shocking. It's baseball, so on its own
merit. The Dodgers losing to theReds last night Cincinnati snapping LA's seven game

(03:14):
home winning streak is not shocking. If you didn't stay awake for the game
last night, when you woke upand heard or looked at your phone and
saw the score, you might havebeen surprised, but you couldn't have been
flabbergasted. Right at the same time, some context is needed. This team
offensively has been abysmal. They didn'thave the starting pitcher, who, up

(03:38):
until forty eight hours prior to thegame, was slated to pitch against the
Dodgers. LA has been awesome athome. They had their biggest crowd of
the season aside from Opening Night. The Reds were gonna have to use nothing
but relievers, and they win theballgame, taking a seven to nothing lead

(03:59):
into the ninth inning. We didthis earlier in the season when the Reds
were winning with a little bit morefrequency. If we're gonna beat up David
Bell when the Reds lose, let'sgive some credit to him when he wins.
He used seven pitchers last night.Sam Maull came back and really,
just for the second time in aRed's uniform, did not pitch very well.
Had a seven to nothing lead, but he used us seven pitchers last

(04:20):
night. I gotta be honest withyou. I was scratching my head when
he pulled Brent Souter in the firstThere was a part of me that wondered,
like, is he going a littlebit too long with Nick Martinez.
But every button the David Bell pushedlast night proved to be the right one.
So if we're gonna do this whenhe presses the wrong button, and
he's pressed the wrong button a fewtimes this year, then we have to

(04:41):
acknowledge it when he presses the rightones. David Bell managed a really good
game last night. I don't knowwhat kind of season Nick Martinez is going
to have. I don't know whatsort of impact on this team he's going
to have. Last night, thoughhe was terrific and the Reds progressively built
their lead, they needed someone toeat a sizeable chunk of innings. Like

(05:02):
it's one thing to have a bullpengame, but it's something else to have
a bullpen game where nobody gets youmore than maybe six outs. Nick Martinez
gave him fifteen last night. TheDodgers never threatened while he was on the
mound. Five shutout innings of onehit, no walk, four strikeout,
baseball. I don't know what histwenty twenty four is gonna end up looking

(05:25):
like. I have no idea. What I can tell you is you mentioned
the name Nick Martinez to me ina couple of years. I'll remember last
night when he came into the gameand shut the Dodgers out for five innings
and enabled the Reds to pull offan improbable victory. But the thing that
I'm going to remember the most isthe performance by Ellie Dela Cruz. I

(05:46):
know I'm the guy who goes outof his way to talk about Ellie Dela
Cruz every time he has a reallygood game, But I mean, last
night, you could be the bigbiggest Ellie skeptic. And I'm not even
sure if you're a big Ellie skepticwhat that's based on. He's had his
struggles recently because it's baseball and it'shard, and he's a young player.
Last night, four for four,he drives in a run, he scores

(06:09):
three times, he comes this closeto swiping five bags. Elie Dela Cruz
on the season is on pace forone hundred and ten stolen bases. Reds
as a team last night stole fivebags. Connor Caple stole the other.
He has thirty steals now. It'seasier to steal now than it was two

(06:32):
years ago. The stolen base isa bigger part of the game, which
is great. The stolen base isa big part of the Reds offensive strategy,
and sometimes they pay the price forthat. Still, it's we're not
a week past Mother's Day and ElieDela Cruz has thirty stolen bases last night.

(06:53):
He basically creates a run on hisown, steal, second steals,
third scores on a wild pitch. He has an element. He has a
dimension that you can't go out andacquire. You're not trading for that,
you can't teach it. It's soextraordinarily rare. And look, man,
this team has been frustrating. It'scertainly been frustrating over the last three or

(07:13):
so weeks. There's been a lotof anger, there's been a lot of
discontent. There's been the inability ofthis team to reach expectations if you had
big expectations. Lots of questions aboutthe front office, lots of questions about
ownership, lots of questions about DavidBell, lots of questions about roster construction.
Very fair questions for the most part, and a lot of frustration.

(07:36):
It's frustrating watching your favorite team struggleoffensively. It's frustrating when you go into
a season thinking, you know what, these team might be pretty good and
the early results are less than good. It's pretty discouraging. But regardless of
what happens the rest of the season, and my guess is, my guess

(07:56):
is, especially if the Reds canjust get through the next week and a
half, I guess is this teamis gonna go in a little bit of
a run at some point, especiallyif the starting pitching remains better than league
average and they at least hang onthe fringes of the playoff race. I
don't think they're gonna lose more thanninety games. I don't think they're gonna
win more than ninety games. I'llbe honest with you. My guess is
the Reds are not a playoff team. I'm not even really sure how to

(08:20):
fairly determine success or failure for twentytwenty four. But here's what I do
know. Watching Ellie de la Cruzis a blast. That doesn't mean he
has a great game every time.It doesn't mean he's immune to slumps.
It doesn't mean that he doesn't havesome areas to grow as a hitter.
He does. He's got some areasto grow as a fielder. He's got

(08:41):
places that he can grow just asa base runner and as an overall baseball
player. But watching him, Idon't care. If this team by the
middle of July is twenty games underfive hundred, They're going to be worth
watching because you can still watch ElieDela Cruz. They're going to be worth
paying attention to because watching him growinto the role of maybe a star,

(09:05):
maybe a superstar, maybe one ofthe best players in the sport, maybe
somebody who is deserving of the EricDavis comparisons. And I take those seriously
because I revere Eric Davis. Youknow, I used to say this about
Joey Vada when the Reds were really, really bad, and for a huge
chunk of his prime years they wereawful. I still got a kick out

(09:26):
of watching his four to five atbats every single night. Reds might get
beat by nine runs, Reds mightbe twenty five games under five hundred.
Watching Joey perfect his craft was stillworth paying attention to. Was made watching
the Reds still worthwhile. The Redsare in a better place than they were
in twenty fifteen and sixteen and seventeen, when they were just floundering around,
losing ninety plus games every year witha whole bunch of no name guys that

(09:50):
were not a part of the future. They are in a better place.
I know there are some folks whomaybe don't want to hear that that doesn't
mean that the playoffs are going tohappen this year or that long term success
is guaranteed. But watching Ellie DelaCruz and watching him grow, and watching
him toy with the Los Angeles Dodgerstoy with the Los Angeles Dodgers last night

(10:13):
was an absolute blast. They franklycould have lost the game. That would
have been the headline. That wouldhave been really frustrating. I still would
have gotten great joy out of watchingEllie Dela Cruz. And if you,
even if you're the most jaded skepticalReds fan, and by the way that
jadedness and skepticism is earned, evenif that describes you, how could you

(10:37):
not get a kick out of watchingthis kid play, watching this kid get
better, And how could you notget a kick out of wondering how good
he might be one day. Lastnight was an absolute blast, and I
think it is Tony said, themost unlikely win of the season. I
can't think of a singular more unlikelyReds win in the last ten years,

(11:00):
and last night. And look, even when they were really, really bad,
they would still pick off a goodteam. I think twenty nineteen they
swept the Astros. Remember there wasa Kyle Farmer walk off in there somewhere.
That was really unlikely. Last yearin April, when they were seven
and fifteen had lost six straight games, they swept the Texas Rangers. That

(11:20):
was unlikely. If I would havesaid last night, if I would have
gone on social media and said theReds are going to win tonight, if
I would have put that out thereat about quarter to ten last night,
I would have been laughed at.There is no one within the sound of
my voice that would have imagined theycould win that baseball game last night.
They did for a few different reasons. David Bell is one of them.

(11:43):
Nick Martinez is one of them.Elie Dela Cruz is the main one.
Sixteen minutes after three o'clock, youcan send me a tweet if you like
or send me an, we're gonnacall it X. We're gonna start stop,
We're gonna stop doing the whole Twitterslash X thing. But do you
send someone in X. You cando it on my Delta Dental X feed

(12:03):
thanks to our friends at Delta Dental. Delta Dental is building healthy, smart,
vibrant communities for all good at Deltadentaloh dot com. Sam Lucia joins
us in just about twenty minutes. Also going to try to make some money
on the Preakness coming up in uhmaybe just about a half hour. We
have a lot to get to todaybetween now and six o'clock. Our phone
numbers are five one, three, seven, four nine, fifteen thirty eight

(12:24):
six six seven oh two three sevenseven six works as well seventeen after three
o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati SportsStation, Just awesome last night. Like,
I I love this. I lovethe rule changes. I look there
there are a lot of reasons tobe frustrated with the rats, a ton
of them. We've expressed them overthe last couple of weeks. I love

(12:46):
the rule changes that have made iteasier and further incentivized based stealing Ellie Dayler
Cruz is fast enough. He wouldbe stealing a lot of bags with the
old way if we didn't have thepicture engagement rule. Ellie dela Cruz is
a guy whose speed you take advantageof. Would he have thirty stolen bases
on May seventeenth? I don't knowthat he would have that many, would

(13:09):
be on pace to steal one hundredand ten bags like he is right now.
Perhaps not, but he wouldn't bestuck on like six stolen bases.
You know the Reds last year, they they leaned into the new rule changes.
They leaned into him and it wasgreat, and they could do that
with a lot of different guys.Ellie de la Cruz is a guy whose
speed and not even really base runninginstincts, those are still being developed.

(13:30):
His speed, his ability to geta jump that translates across pretty much any
era or any set of rules.Four for four, three run scored,
one driven in four stolen bases. We're gonna make Ellie de la Cruz and
that performance last night, We're gonnacall that the performance of the night.

(13:52):
It is a service of our friendsthat Blue Chew want to boost your performance.
Blue dot Com promo code MO.When you check out, you get
a first your first month free. That's right, Blue chew dot com check
out using promo code m oh it'llhelp your performance La de la Cruz with

(14:16):
the performance of the night and uhand it was awesome. And you know,
Tony asked me during quick Hits andLocks of the night, is that
the kind of win the jump startsthe team? I don't know, you
know, would anybody be surprised ifif tonight they go out there and lose
six to one. No, uh, but if this gets turned around,

(14:37):
there is likely to be a game. Maybe it's last night, maybe it's
not, but there is there isgoing to be a game that you go,
Okay, that's that's where that's whereit kind of started. And you
know, even if you go backto last season, and I'm I'm as
tired of as anybody of talking aboutlast year, I think we overstate how
good the Reds were last season. They finished two games above five hundred,

(15:00):
But they went from a team thatwas sort of middling, that looked like
it was going to be en routeto another ninety loss season to one that
you know, obviously was in therace all year long. When in the
first place. In the middle ofJune, they were in first played as
first place as late as August.I think of two things. I think
of when they went to Wrigley Fieldand swept the Cubs, which is before

(15:20):
I think of three things actually, which is before Ellie got called up.
Matt McClain was with the Reds. Then Spencer Steer was absolutely raking. They
go to Wrigley Field and they sweepthe Cubs. Over Memorial Day weekend.
I think of Andrew Abbott's first start, which wasn't a Monday, which was
the fourth game of a four gameragainst the Brewers. They had lost the

(15:43):
previous three. Then Andrew Abbott getscalled up and pitches great, and I
think of those games against the Dodgers. One Ellie's debut. The other was
obviously Will Benson's walk off last night. And I do think Will Benson the
home run last night just it's setthe tone and maybe calmed everybody down.
Certainly gave that Red's bullpen a bitof a cushion. They obviously scored one

(16:06):
more time in the first inning.Who knows, but I'll allow for the
possibility that if if the Reds endup at least making it interesting this summer
that perhaps last night could be thenight one of those nights we point to
as the a signature night and maybeeven the start of the turnaround. Twenty
seven after three, your phone callsare coming up later five point three,
seven four nine, fifteen thirty andeight sixty six, seven oh two three

(16:30):
seven seven six. Sam Lacurra joinsUS next ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station,
Cincinnati's twenty eight from four of thisis ESPN fifteen thirty on Moega,
Reds and Dodgers again tonight after aseven to two victory Cincinnati looking for consecutive
wins. Sam Lecura is with US. Uh always kind enough to join us

(16:52):
third time this season, he saidhe wanted to be on more. So
here we are, big boy. It's good to have you. What's going
on? I know? Careful? What jewish? All right? No,
I appreciate it. Man. Howare you? I'm good, man,
I'm good. After last night? That was it? That was a fun
ball game. Did you stay upto watch it? I stayed up and

(17:12):
watched the whole thing. That okay, me too, Yeah, I love
I just lived important for my job. But yeah, Yeah, I was
glad to stay up to watch thatone. I was just over taking a
guitar lesson and was talking to myguy and I was like, hey man,
it was like, do you happento stay up and watch it?
I was like, that had beenthe first good one to watch in about

(17:32):
three weeks, so I hope somepeople stayed up to watch it. Yeah.
No, I certainly did the EllieDeler Cruise Show answer me this.
Obviously things are different now than whenyou played, because you can't throw over
a first base a thousand times. But when you're on the mound and a
guy like Ellie is on base, what does that do for you? Mentally?
You know it is going to behard for me to totally relate just

(17:53):
because of the different tools that apitcher had at his disposal, to be
able to hold a runner there, which is throw over as many times as
he damn well please, and tohold the ball. Now, I've always
thought that holding the ball pass whatthe pitch clock would allow. Now,
holding the ball's best way to getsomebody to stop. It's not throwing over
to pick something. When you're pickingoff, you're basically just trying to shorten

(18:17):
the lead, but your legs arecut out from under you after the first
two times, right, I meanyou're you're done. So being able to
hold the ball and kind of makethat hitter and the well both actually the
runner and the hitter at the plate, make them kind of just get heavy
in their legs, you know whatI mean. They're sitting there and they're
kind of waiting and they're engaged andwhat's about to go on. So the
longer you can make them wait, the better then. So at this point,

(18:41):
basically what you have is varying howquickly you take your sign and engage
the batter at the plate. Youknow, like, Okay, so I
got my sign at fourteen seconds,Now I can quick pitch at eleven seconds,
or I can hold it all theway down to one vary it that
way, or then it becomes theslide step. But guys have gotten away

(19:02):
from the slidestep big time because you'resacrificing probably stuff and command uh when you're
when you're doing the slide step.So guys want to be throwing their a
stuff, They want to have theirbest commands, so they're not really doing
uh, they're not really doing muchto control the running game, and obviously
you've seen the numbers that have supportedthat. I want to talking about that,

(19:25):
Yeah, trying to get him out, which and look, I mean,
like like everybody else, we've we'veseen him struggle a little bit.
But when you I mean you watchedhim last season, you watched him late
last season, and you've watched himthis year. He's been he's been tougher
to get out from a from thestandpoint of maybe putting yourself in the position

(19:45):
of somebody trying to get him outlast year versus something similar this year.
What's changed. I think that he'sfrom the left side definitely. He's shortened
his his his leid kick so it'snot as big so his and I think
what that does, so he sacrificeda little bit. I mean, I
say, a little bit of powerset it's the ball four hundred and forty
feet because he's just that good, but it just it keeps his head a

(20:07):
little bit more still, so it'snot so much up and down. So
when he's reading the trajectory of thepitch, it's not his head movement isn't
you know, getting in the wayof him being able to track that pitch.
I think that's been a part ofit. And then the improvements from
the right side. I mean that'sbeen the biggest thing. I mean,
he was just a dead out lastyear from the right side, and now
he's doing it. I think he'sdone a really good job of using the

(20:30):
entire field. I mean, yousaw last night from both sides of the
plate. One he hits the wellfirst to single up the middle. Secondly,
then he hits the ball down theleft field line for the double.
Later in the game, when theymove him over to the right side,
he hits the ball through the rightside, So using the opposite parts of
the field. And I think justaccepting the fact that he doesn't need to
be going for power, like hispower is going to come when he's recognizing

(20:56):
mistakes. And David Bell said saidit after the game that Ellie's taken good
swings in the ball because he's controllingthe strike zone better and getting himselves into
better counts to be able to getoff that a swing is what an offensive
player will call it. This teamhas gone through a really rough last few
weeks. Last night, notwithstanding manyhave yeah you may have noticed, many

(21:17):
have wondered are they missing a veteran. Are they missing a guy who's been
there before? They missing not necessarilyfrom a productivity standpoint, but just a
dude who can sort of guide theseguys through the inevitable rough patches that come
during a long season. Does doesthis team miss that kind of presence on
the roster Maybe I don't want to. I don't. I'm gonna be a

(21:42):
little bit noncommittal on that, justbecause they have a Candelario, right,
and so when they when this, like first the struggle began, I remember
he was he was a big pieceof it. And then they got to
San Diego and we were talking about, Okay, he he's kind of your
veteran guy. I mean, youcan consider India and Stevenson veterans on this

(22:03):
team because of the service time andwho else doesn't have any But those guys
have had seasons interrupted by injury andthey've missed a lot of times. So
they may have years in service time, but not necessarily at bouts. So
they don't know how to come outof some of these slumps. And everybody
on this team is slumped before youknow, but there is seems to be

(22:25):
some difference of slumping in Double Aand slumping in under the bright lights of
the big leagues. So when we'retalking about this, me and Brian,
and I'm like, man, Ireally feel like Candelario is the most important
piece of this right now, becauseone, he wants to start playing well
because he just he's going to behere. He signed her for three years.

(22:48):
He wants to have a good startto his Reds career. But two,
I want him to come out ofthis so that the younger guys will
go to him after he's come outof his slump and say, hey,
what was your thought process here? What'd you do? How'd you get out
of it? Because I haven't slumpedat the big league level, and I
don't know how, which is whyI feel like this has been such a
prolonged slump because nobody knows really whoto go to or how to get out

(23:11):
of it at this level, rightbecause the scouting reports are so much better,
the execution by the opposition so muchbetter. So I felt like he
was a big key in all this. And he's continued to swing the bat
well and over the past you know, I mean, I know they got
pitched really well on what was it, I guess Wednesday? By the Brandon

(23:32):
fat for Arizona. I mean,he pitched a great game, so I'm
gonna use that as an outliner. But the games before that, it was
five runs, ten hits, fiveruns, ten hits, six runs,
whatever, more than ten hits.So the bats were starting to come around
a little bit. And obviously lastnight you saw against one of the best
pitching staffs, well the best pitchingstaff in the National League, that they
put up some runs. So thatwas a quality thing to see. It

(23:53):
was spread out evenly obviously was theELI Show, which I mean, there's
just guys that are different when itcomes to being a star. When it's
time to be a star, andI think last night was a time for
him to be a star, andhe sure certainly was no question. But
for a short answer, I'm gonnabe noncommittal. Do I think they could

(24:18):
use a little bit more of it? I mean, I don't think it
would hurt, But you know,it's it's kind of easy to say that
since they're going through such a struggle, but when they're not, and it's
going to be, oh, thesekids are you know, their kids are
just out there having fun because itlooks good, right, because there are
going out there and they're stealing thebases, and they're hitting the doubles,
and they're doing all the things thatwe've seen them doing. They're being really

(24:38):
successful. Is the light bulb comingon for a hundred green Yeah, yep.
I think that's been a talking Imean, I will be committal on
that one. I really believe thatit is, just because there's been,
you know, different signs and look, I mean, if you want to

(25:02):
talk about lip service, Hunter's gotsome of the best around. Like he
speaks like you know, he talkeda really really great game and he makes
it and it's eloquent and it soundsawesome and you want to believe everything he
has to say. He's got acareer in politics after his baseball career.
But you know, it's been alot. To me, it's been a
lot of lip service. You cantalk as much to your blue in the

(25:22):
face, but I need to seeit happened. I need to see something
happening that is making it feel real. And I hadn't I really hadn't seen
much of it until the last monthor so, right, And I feel
like being around Frankie, you know, I don't think it was a coincidence
that he started to learn a splitwith Frankie coming over, because I mean,

(25:45):
I've been thinking for a long time. We were on the Reds caravan
this year together. We had greatconversations. Rhet Lauder was on that was
on the bus with us, greatconversations with him about you know, even
me just listening to Frankie talk,I was excited. I wanted to go
back and pitch again like he,you know, invigorated me me to that
point. And I think that himbeing around guys again, the veteran leadership

(26:10):
on a pitching staff, with guyswho maybe have a couple of years in
the big leagues now, but it'sbeen interrupted by injury and such and such,
so they don't have a ton ofinnings. I think that Frankie's had
a big impact on Hunter and therest of the staff, just as far
as showing what it looks like whenyou're aggressive within the strike zone versus not.
All these guys have great stuff, why wouldn't you be And if you're

(26:33):
gonna get beat, mo, I'drather get beat on the second pitch of
it at bat than the seventh you'regonna get hit. I mean, you're
gonna get hit in the big leagues, and I don't care who you are,
You're gonna get hit. Obviously,Walks are gonna be a part of
it. Unfortunately we all wish, you know, I had, I thought
I had really good control. Iwalked way too many people, you know,

(26:55):
because now if i'd have filled onehundred, I probably would have walked
a few less. But you knowthat's going to be part of it.
If you're gonna you're gonna be inthe big leagues, you're gonna get hit.
So if you give up a hiton the second pitch of the bat
rather than every hitter you face isgoing seven pitch, there's a couple of
innings in there somewhere accumulated over thecourse of that outing with five pitches per
this played appearance because you were aggressiveand you force them the issue. Now

(27:21):
on the same token, you're gonnaget some outs on the second pitch too,
right, So it's gonna even outlike that. So that's been the
light bull that I've seen for Hunteris recognizing that he's not gonna throw a
no hitter every time. He willeventually, but he's not gonna throw a
no hitter every time. And youmight as well just get let's get it
out of the way, whatever itis. I don't want to sit out

(27:41):
here and screw with you for sevenpitches for a walk. I'd rather give
up a second pitch single or geta second pitch ground ball. So that's
the light ball that I've seen. It's been really impressive. Uh, And
he's such an X factor for thisteam because he's got the least experience on
this pitching staff of it pretty muchall them. So, I mean,
I try to keep the I forgetabout that sometimes too, but he's got

(28:03):
the least innings accumulated of anybody onthis pitching staff over the course of his
career. So he's still learning alot, and he's learning it at the
big league level. But he's heldhis own to a degree. I think
he's under achieved for sure, butthe light bulb definitely seems to be there.
And their whole pitching staff's done agreat job during the stretch. Yeah.

(28:25):
No, the starting pitching above theboard, across the board, above
league average. Can't ask for betterthan that right now. Best need to
come around. Awesome to have youas always, man, I do appreciate
it. You got a brother. Thanks man, you're the best sam lecurrer.
We appreciate his time, of course, check him out on Red's Live.
We're gonna go and make some moneyon the Preakness with our buddy Dick

(28:45):
Girardi, plus later on Devin KERRMLS Season Pass as we look ahead to
FC Cincinnati and our buddy Jedd deMusi from Valhalla. He's at the PGA
Championship. Scotti Scheffler, I guessis talking right now. Try to get
some of that audio as well.Lots to cover between now and six on
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.See ten minutes away from four o'clock.
This is ESPN fifteen thirty on Moegar. The Brinkness is tomorrow and when it

(29:10):
comes to the Triple Crown. Ourgo to guy to help us make some
money and dive into some of thestorylines is our buddy Dick Girardi, the
legendary horse racing reporter and columnist forthe Philadelphia Daily News courtesy of our friends
at bed online. Dick, itis always good to have you. Happy
Preaknas weekend. How are you?I am doing great, Always great when

(29:32):
it's prick This weekend. We loveit. It is a lot of fun
and an intriguing Weekend's let's start withMouth, who gets scratched. He was
the favorite. So what's the rippleeffect with regards to that this weekend?
Yeah, it changes obviously the betting. As you said, Mouth was going
to be a pretty significant favorite inthis race. Now I think that's going

(29:53):
to fall do Mystic dand a derbywinner in your So why was it the
derby winner already favored against Mouth inthe Arkansas Derby, Mouth at won by
six, but Mouth was not eligibleto run in the Kentucky Derby. Consist,
everybody knows that's the bafferd horse thatBob. At the moment, he's
still banned from running horses at ChurchillDown. So yeah, I think that

(30:15):
Mystic Dan. He's not getting eighteenone this time, right, we're hitting
two to one instead of eighteen toone, maybe five to two. So
different, shorter field, a loteasier to get a sense of out of
the race is going to be runon like the twenty horse field in Kentucky.
All Right, I ask you thisevery time we have yawn, I
want a long shot worth investing in. What do we got Yeah. I

(30:37):
think one of the problems because ofthe way horses are bet in the wind
pool now in these triple crown races, especially in a predest with only eight
now that we've lost mouth, therereally are any long shots. I was
going to give you Uncle Heavy. He was twenty to one on the line.
He's now seven to one. That'skind of the best long shot I
have. I don't like mouve gotto at all the he's twenty to one,

(31:00):
he should be honter to one. He's got no chance. So yeah,
if long shot typically think like fifteentwenty to one, they're just aren't
because people just will not. Theywill not let anybody go off at a
long prices. Everybody's petrified that they'regoing to miss that on a Rich strike
in eighty to one or mind atbird at fifty to one. So yeah,
that's the best I can do.It's not very good that that's the

(31:22):
best log shot I have. Youtalked about Mystic Dan. So if Mystic
Dan wins this race, then it'striple crown watch I can get triple crown
winner. Yes, of plus sevenhundred, is it worth it? It
is? And that's on that onlinedot age, and here's why I think
it's worth it. So he's goingto be saying two to one five to

(31:42):
two tomorrow if he wins, he'sgoing to be what two to one or
less to win the Belmont Stakes inthree weeks and you'll be sitting at seven
to one. So I think you'resaying, all right, if you think
missic Dan is going to win thisrace, that future book that puts you
in great five is when you liketo go to Belllott Parker. Everybody's betting
the horse at two to one.Recieve me at Saratoga this year, wouldn't

(32:06):
you like to betlements haven't already havethem locked in at seven to one?
So that is a prop bet onbet online that I do recommend. All
right, Is there another prop forthe race tomorrow that stands out? Yeah?
I like the over one fifty five. They have the time down mile
on three sixteenths and it's over understrictly even money bet at one fifty five.

(32:30):
The track surface has been relatively slowsince they started running in pemical a
week ago, so I'm thinking probablyover one fifty five. And even as
mistic Dan one, he didn't runa particularly fast Derby. This isn't like
a horse like Smarty Jones that potentiallycould run out of the TV sets.
So I like the over one fiftyfive for the mile in three sixteen.

(32:51):
Should be a lot of fun thisweekend. Dick Girardi. Thanks to our
friends at bet online. Check outbet online for the most up to date
odds and props on the preak mistakes. You are the best with having you
on, Dick. We'll do itin a few weeks, man, Thanks
so much. Sounds good, Thankyou so much. Appreciate it. You
got it six minutes away from fouro'clock. By the way, our numbers
are five point three seven, fournine fifteen thirty. Yesterday we talked about

(33:13):
we responded to the big debate onESPN of Adam Schefter and dan Orlowski regarding
T. Higgins and whether he mightsuddenly come up with an injury. A
few more thoughts on that. Ihave three pole questions. I just put
them up on X thanks to ourfriends at United Heartland Insurance. Check out
uhi ands dot com. I gotan Ellie de la Cruz pole question,

(33:34):
I got a T. Higgins polequestion, and I have a pole question
about pants. Go on X atWell, I mean, don't go on
X. Let's just call it Twitter. I'm already tired of calling it X.
It's always going to be Twitter.Go on Twitter at moiger. Could
they today? They made it sothat you it's now officially X dot com.
It hasn't been that way since theymade it act now, so I'm

(33:57):
just I'm changing my mind. I'mcalling it Twitter at Mowager vote now,
Ellie, Dela Cruz, t Higginsand Pants. Five minutes away from four
o'clock, Daren what he got forme? You see, has just got
their guy. Dylan Mitchell has committed. Yes, can we get Chad Brendl

(34:21):
on with us? That might bethe hard but yes, we'll try.
Dylan Mitchell, who played last year. Former five star recruit, played at
Texas, averaged a shade under tenpoints a game, seven and a half
rebounds. He also was got offersfrom Miami, Florida and Auburn. He

(34:44):
tells on three Sports he is transferringto the University of Cincinnati. This is
a big, big, big getfor Wes Miller. Dylan Mitchell, former
five star recruit. We'll get Chadon perhaps as soon as ten minutes from
now it's four minutes away from fouro'clock. Thank you Teraron reading that tweet

(35:04):
from Joe Tipton. Dylan Mitchell, former five star recruit, averaged just under
ten points a game last year forTexas. He is going to play for
Wes Miller at the University of Cincinnati. We'll get Chad On to talk about
this. Il Maleegar. This isESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports station.
This report is all right here wego. It's three minutes after four o'clock.

(35:25):
This is ESPN fifteen thirty. Goodafternoon, Molleggar. Thank you for
joining us today. I hope yourweekend is off to a great start.
Busy day, lots going on.Well, we're gonna go to Louisville.
Good to VALHALLO were by the way. Scotty Scheffler just spoke a few minutes
ago. Our buddy Jed de Mucci, formerly of Local twelve, is there
and I just want to know whatit was like to watch Scotty Scheffler play

(35:46):
golf today in person. Also DevinCurve from MLS season pass. We have
Elli Dealer Cruz, we have tHiggins, and we have eighty dollars pants
to get to plus Brennemant and Joneson baseball. But first there's some big
UC basketball news. Dylan Mitchell hascommitted to play for Wes Miller at the
University of Cincinnati. A player wholast season averaged just under ten points a

(36:08):
game and seven and a half boardsfor the Texas Longhorns, he is coming
to Clifton. This will be coveredin immense detail at Bearcat journal dot com.
Bearcat journal dot com. Of course, Chad Brendel's baby and always kind
enough to join us when we askthis is big news, isn't it massive

(36:29):
news? No? I mean,we see you know, you were so
kind to join us on our programlast night. And one thing that we
talked about was replacing John Newman, and you know who is gonna fill kind
of that veteran defense toughness role.We have our answer, and it's potentially

(36:51):
an upgrade on John Newman. Youknow, John provided a little bit more
shooting, but Mitchell a little bitmore dynamic at the rim, a better
rebounder, and just as good defendingthe three in the four, you know,
the two kind of critical spots inthe big twelve. So this was

(37:14):
a really good Cincinnati roster twenty minutesago. Now it's better. Yeah,
I mean, let's look at theclass as a whole. We'll talk about
Dylan Mitchell specifically here in a second, but you and I talked a little
bit about this last night. Nothingagainst the players who chose to depart.
I wish them all well. Butwhen the season ended, if we were

(37:37):
to list, in order one tothe bottom players that you hope stay,
the players at the top of thatlist have all chosen to stay, and
yet they've brought in some guys whofit very specific needs elsewhere. When you
look at the portal class specifically,we could add the two tylers to it
if you want. But when youlook at the portal class specifically and then

(38:00):
add it to the players that wesaw play for the Bearcats last year,
how much better do you expect thisteam this coming season to be than the
one we just watched. I mean, the expectation has to be n Cuba
tournament team. I'm not going togo crazy and say protected seed, but

(38:20):
I mean, just looking at atwhat they have on paper, mod this
should have. It's a roster thatshould at least be wearing white the first
round of the NCAA tournament. Imean you have Wes Miller took a massive
and I don't think this has talkedabout enough. Wes Miller took a massive
gamble last year, rolling the dicewith two point guards that had never dribbled

(38:45):
a basketball in a Division one game. That gamble worked. And you are
now going to go into year twoin the Big Twelve with two guys that
played point guard every minute of everygame in the Big Twelve last season,
and you saw the emergence of GiselJames. I think Dayda Thomas is gonna

(39:07):
get better. You now have alittle bit of insurance for those two with
Connor Hickman as well as a guythat can play shooting guard and shoot forty
plus percent. And hopefully you haveCJ. Frederick back in healthy at the

(39:27):
two, so you're better at theone, You're better at the two.
Dan Skillings, you hope is readyfor another jump at the three. You
have Simas Lukachis at the four, and now you have Dylan Mitchell supplementing both
of those guys. You have aZis Bendego in the year two. You
have a really talented sophomore big manin Arenton page a top fifty recruit in

(39:52):
the previous class. So if you'removing, you know, that's not even
getting into some some of the guysthat are on the bench, the Josh
Reeds and the Ravon Griffiths and thetwo Tilers that are coming in. This
roster has all of the functional piecesthat you need to be really successful in

(40:15):
the best conference in America. Froman offensive perspective, what jumps out to
me is a really good shooting percentagefifty eight and a half percent, not
a ton of shots per game,a shade under seven. How can he
help this team offensively? Well,Mo, what did it feel like this
team shot at the rim last year? Not fifty eight and a half percent,

(40:39):
Well, that's his overall shooting percentageat the rim last year. Dylan
Mitchell shot seventy six percent. Thisis a guy that is insanely athletic and
knows how to put the ball inthe basket when he gets to the bucket,

(41:00):
and that is something that this teamseverely lacked last year. I mean,
I remember a bunch of games lookingand going, man, they're five
of sixteen on layups, and they'reseven of twenty on layups, Like just
numbers that don't make any sense fora team that essentially got a lot of

(41:21):
what they wanted offensively and just didn'tconvert. This is a guy that can
finish, and this is a guythat is excellent in transition. I mean,
you know, you get a chanceto have him and Skillings on the
wing with Dade or Gisel with theball going downhill in transition, You've got

(41:43):
a much better chance of finishing whenyou had Dylan Mitchell into this mix.
He's more of a slasher offensively,he doesn't really play with his back to
the basket, but he's a guywith a really quick first step. He
can get downhill and hurry and whenhe gets there he can he can put
it in the basket. So thatis a much needed upgrade from a season

(42:04):
ago. Uh, this is Thishas made my weekend. The only thing
that would make it better would beat the knickt win tonight. But this,
this has made my weekend. I'mreally excited about this. Now,
this correct me if I'm wrong. This fills the the last remaining open scholarship.
So do I do? I assumethey're done? Could more pieces move?
How could the next couple of weeksunfold. I mean, Mo,

(42:27):
it's we're in kind of a newworld, like there are no scholarship limits
anymore, because basically you can justpay for a guy via n I L.
You know, you can pay forhis schooling. Zavier did that last
year. They were one scholarship overand they used ni L to add an
extra guy. If I had toguess, I would guess that they're probably

(42:52):
done. But you never know.If something happens in the summer, you
know, uh, they would. They're you're always now in a position to
continue adding to the rockster if youwant to. But man, we're already
doing the math on minutes for thisteam. And guess what, there ain't

(43:13):
a lot of extras. I meanDylan, Dylan Mitchell is coming in to
play twenty eight to thirty minutes agame, and he's probably coming in,
you know, behind Dan and Siemos. So it's, uh, there's a

(43:35):
numbers crunch. But hey, getall the talent you can get and go
win basketball games. How about that? Yeah, go figure it out.
I'll let Wes, I'll let thecoaching staff figure out who's gonna play how
much? Go win games? Yeah, and look, last year's team had
all sorts of injury and illness issues. So I always laugh at the idea
that, well they're ten deep, but when when attrition takes a hold.

(43:58):
We saw what happened with last year'sand so they've they're insulated against such things
happening a little bit better this comingseason. Agreed. Agreed, this is
hey, look, man, thebig thing for me in this one mo.
Auburn has had a disaster of anoffseason, and they had a bunch

(44:19):
of money in a bunch of minutes, and they recruited Dylan Mitchell really hard
out of high school. They hada pre existing relationship, they had everything
you would think a recruit is lookingfor, and Dylan Mitchell picked West Miller
in Cincinnati in a crowded situation. So you got to tip your cap to
this staff for going in there, battling this out and getting the job done

(44:45):
on a kid that had other offersthat probably you know, were more conducive
to playing thirty eight minutes a game. Pretty remarkable, all right, man,
I appreciate it. I know youhave to cover this. Have a
great weekend. Thank you so much, Thank you, so I appreciate it.

(45:07):
Dylan, Dylan Mitchell last year. It's a Chad Brendel, Bearcat Journal
dot com. Dylan Mitchell. Lastseason in twenty nine minutes a game of
Texas you mentioned, Chad mentioned Dylanshot seventy six percent at the rim.
He averaged nine point six points, seven and a half rebounds a game,
a block a game, and overallshot fifty eight and a half percent.
Got to be better at the freethrow line. Could say that about a

(45:28):
lot of UC players shot just undersixty percent. But a good get for
Wes Miller. And if you lookat the portal over the last couple of
years, you know we've we've wantedto see more guys that perhaps come over
from high major programs. Obviously Texasis moving to the SEC. This is
a player coming from one Big twelveprogram last season to another Big twelve program

(45:50):
this coming year. Chad will haveit covered in great detail at Bearcat Journal
dot com. All right, uh, we've been jammed jammed today, I
said, in twenty minutes, we'llgo to Louisville. Our buddy Jed de
Muci, formerly of a local twelve, has been watching Scottie Scheffler play golf
today amid one of the more morebizarre sets of circumstances a major sporting event

(46:13):
has ever unfolded under. We'll dothat coming up in about twenty minutes.
Brennanman and Jones on baseball as well. And I've got I'll just do these
now. I've got three poll questionson Twitter at moegar. Thanks to our
friends at United Heartland Insurance check outuhi ns dot com. Elie de la
Cruz is on pace for one hundredand ten stolen bases over under We'll set

(46:40):
it at one ten and a half. Where are you putting your money over
under? One ten and a half? Vote now at moegar. Yesterday we
discussed the the Adam Schefter dan Orlowskidebate where Adam Schefter didn't just insinuate,
basically came out and said, BOYDT. Higgins is suddenly going to come

(47:00):
up with some injury out of nowhere. Are you worried about that? Vote
now at moegar. And in thepolice report from the Scotti Scheffler arrest,
apparently the officer involved his eighty dollarspolice pants were ruined. So the third
question we have is have you everpaid eighty dollars for a pair of pants?

(47:22):
Vote now at Moegar. We're givingaway Hooty and the Blowfish tickets in
just over one hour as well. It's a quarter after four. Devin Kerr
is going to be on the callfor FC Cincinnati versus Saint Louis tomorrow and
he joins us next on ESPN fifteenthirty Cincinnati Sports Station. A busy,
busy week for FC Cincinnati continues threegames in eight days. Saint Louis City

(47:46):
SC comes to the Queens City forthe first time, the Orange and Blue
looking to continue its league high fivegame winning streaks. Seven thirty Tomorrow night,
you could watch the match on MLSSeason Pass on Apple TV, where
Devin Kerr is going to be onthe call match analyst for MLS Season Pass
and kind enough to give us afew minutes to preview the game tomorrow night.

(48:07):
It's good to have you, Devin. How are you? I appreciate
you having me, man. Igotta be honest. The weather a little
bit different than what I'm coming fromin Austin, so I'm hoping this changes
come game time. I think we'regood. I think we're getting all this
crap out of the way today.I think we're gonna have I think we're
gonna have great weather, and giventhe way this team is playing, we
should have an awesome atmosphere or TQLtomorrow night. I love that. Yeah,

(48:30):
you know, I've never had abad time here, this this town,
this culture, this team, everybody'salways so great. You'll know that
about me. You'll learn that aboutme. I always say what's off the
top of my head, whether youguys agree with it or not. But
it's also it's also pretty cool forme because to me, the matchup against
Saint Louis City. You know, while certainly the origins of them in Major

(48:51):
League Soccer are not as in thedepths of what we've seen froms C Cincinnati
of course at the time in USLas well. They've got a great fan
base as well, they travel well, they're fun, and I'm sure in
the back of the mind of fC Cincinnati they want a little bit of
rad revenge of what went on intwenty twenty three in the five to one
match that with that city. Sowe'll see. Yeah, And the thing

(49:13):
is, it's not unlike last yearwhere FC Cincinnati was playing really well at
the time and then suddenly they laythis total clunker in Saint Louis probably their
worst match of the season. Thisteam is also playing really well and so
five consecutive wins. There are someparallels for those who watched that match last
year saw Saint Louis and maybe haven'tseen him since. How does this year

(49:34):
Saint Louis Club compare to last year? I would say that they're very similar
in the sense that they still carrya ton of energy. They can be
very direct a lot of their games, and it's difficult the amount of pressure
that they bring to a match. You know, as a player, whether
you're Matt Miosi on the back lineor you're the you know, perennial front
runner for pretty much every award onthe attacking side of the ball. In

(49:55):
Luco Acosta, the switch can neverbe off and that's difficult thing as a
player, constantly looking around where yourmarks are coming from when you're receiving the
ball, always having to be onthe next ball immediately. You don't really
have that gray area to slow downat times compared to what some other teams
bring. So that's the same, but there are there are some differences that

(50:15):
stick out to me. Number oneis Sailo City doesn't have the same amount
of depth in the nine spot. They lost Nico Joe Achini in the offseason
to Italy, so a lot moreis put on the shoulders y Al Klaus,
which is their striker up top. That changes because the games have evolved

(50:36):
underneath him. He's a type ofguy that you can play into his feet,
you can play him over over thetop. But because they don't exactly
have the support latent games, theyfound a way to stretch his minutes a
little bit more, in my opinion, and so they play more through the
midfield. Now they're predictable in thesense that they overbalance on one side,
but they're unpredictable because there's a lotmore moving through the midfield. That's not

(50:58):
what f C Cincinnata fans are goingto be used to because last year it
was a lot more point A toZ as quick as possible. They're capable
in different areas of the field. That's slowing it down, recycling the balls
to the other side, and specificallythrough the midfield to create chances. I
had your colleague Danny Higginbotham on theshow with me on Wednesday. He had
their their game on Wednesday night, and I threw this question at him.

(51:20):
I think when when you have agreat player, right, like a Lucho
Acosta, it's always funny, youknow. I always imagine people who cover
Lebron James or guys like that, and it's like you kind of run out
of things to say, You kindof run out of superlatives. With a
guy like Luco Acosta, I'm alwaysinterested in different perspectives. Where do you
even begin to describe his greatness andwhat he's meant for this league and obviously
specifically f C Cincinnati. I alwayslean on the side of humor for things

(51:46):
like this, and as you cantell coming in, it's he's a cheat
code, right, He's he's thebiggest past that you're ever going to face
on the field because of the luxurythat he's given by the coaching staff.
Respectfully, that's not to say thatUcho doesn't work defensively, but he has
given more freedom to go explore thegame and a lot of guys don't have
that. And so as a defender, I'm former center back myself, it's

(52:08):
hard to mark someone like that becausethere is no tendency of starting point.
You know, you know that hewants to play down underneath he's going to
pick up the ball and in fivemovements going forward, but he'll also be
the guy streaking in behind. He'salso the guy in the touch line.
And then every now and then youfind him at the top of the box
on the eight team coming to receiveit off the back line. So because
of all of that, it's nearimpossible to mark him. You know,

(52:30):
the way that you try and findno way to do it is physically bump
him off the ball. But again, his quickness is so good that he
just always finds the way to findsuccess. And I would say that you're
entering an era with him that thehope for FC Cincinnati fans is that maybe
their attack could start to hit anunprecedented level. No, I want to

(52:52):
be very clear, the window thatwe've seen so far, the sample size,
if you will, is quite smallwith Kevin Kelsey. But what his
pro file of player unlocks for evenmore opportunities going forward, whether it be
Lucho Acosta or if it's someone poppingout of the midfield a late run by
Wobodo right lu or Rigiano on theleft hand side, who I'm a massive

(53:13):
fan of. I do think theaddition of Kevin Kelsey is going to put
this team attacking wise in another realmthat we haven't seen. Assuming that level
of consistency can continue. Well, you kind of stole my thunder because that
was going to be my next question. Kevin Kelsey, we haven't seen much
of him, but he jumpstarts theirattack in the Columbus match. He was
their attack on Wednesday night. Andhe's so young, he's so new to

(53:37):
this club. I think it's reallyfun to think about just the way this
club integrates people who come in fromfrom other clubs, who come in from
other places, and they add themto the mix and it feels like they
have been part of the team forsuch a long time. Kevin Kelsey's kind
of the tip of the iceberg inthat regard smart by the club. You
know, they have good background ondata and what that profile will look like

(53:59):
to go and search for the playersin general, and then you know,
how does that person go about theirbusiness. I can tell you that again
that small window you've seen, he'sa pro. He works his butt off
in the gym. I was attraining earlier today and tell you what,
I'm six six and this kid's rightup there too, but the lower portion
of his body is insane. Hehas got all muscle waist down and I

(54:22):
was watching him in training there isjust a seamless nature about him. The
first ball I watched him take fortyyards out of the air, Naska on
the backside plucked it right out ofthe air like it was nothing. And
I think for him, it's justgoing to be trying to figure out style
of play, understanding FC Cincinnati's processesboth on and off the field, and
getting to understand one of the thingsthat players struggle with. And I'm not

(54:44):
saying Kelsey's doing this, but whenyou come to a new team, you
yourself, you're so excited and youhave so many ideas and you've gone want
to go and attack this opportunity rightthis project. But you have to be
careful that you make sure you're listeningas much as you're trying to explain what
you want, So you're listening towhat's going on around you. And that's
something that they're really working on rightnow, so that you understand the team

(55:07):
better because that in turn is goingto open up opportunities for you going forward.
But in just in terms of himas a striker back to goal.
He's good. He knows how touse his body. Certainly, FC Cincinnati
fans have seen how good he isin the air, and he just moves
like a well versed striker right now, outside, in inside outset pieces.
He's got a little bit of everything. That's why I said, if you
can contain this and like bundle alltogether and just keep that a constant,

(55:30):
it's scary what they could be goingforward. Yeah, I would agree with
that wholeheartedly. I know you havea match to prepare for. Have a
blast tomorrow night, man. Ido appreciate the time. Thank you so
much. Hope we can do itagain. Thanks for having me all the
basket luck tears, you got it. Devin Kerr Match Analyst MLS Season Pass
Apple TV. FC Cincinnati hosting SaintLouis. If you remember that match last

(55:52):
year, they lose five to one. They shook it all very quickly,
but really maybe with the exception ofthe Columbus game up there, their only
real clunker all of last season. They have not played him since they'll play
him tomorrow night. Of course. In addition to the coverage on Apple,
you can hear it on ESPN fifteenthirty with pregame coverage beginning at seven o'clock.

(56:16):
A surreal, weird, tragic, bizarre, confusing scene this morning in
Louisville. The PGA Championship unfolding thisweekend at Valhalla. Our buddy Jed Demuci.
The last time we talked with Jedwas I think his last day at
Local twelve. He has been thereall day watching Scottie Scheffler play golf.

(56:37):
He'll maybe help us make sense ofa strange day in Louisville. Next ESPN
fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station, Cincinnati'sESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from the UC Health
Traffic Center during National Hospital Week oraway from five o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty,

(57:00):
Vernamute Jones on baseball is coming upin just about fifteen minutes and one
more shot to win. Hooty andthe Blowfish tickets as well and more on
the Ellie De la Cruz Show andNick Martinez Shows from last night. I
get up this morning and I lookat my phone and I see Scotty Scheffler
arrested as he's trying to make hisway to the golf course of Valhalla down

(57:22):
there in Louisville for Round two ofthe PGA Championship, and from that point
until about ten thirty this morning, whether it was watching Twitter or watching ESPN,
it was like two and a halfthree hours of some of the most
bizarre, awful and then later onmaybe a little bit amusing television that I've

(57:44):
ever watched, and a bizarre sceneScott Scheffler arrested and then the world's number
one golfer and then he gets outof the poke and he goes and he
plays he just got done talking withthe media. Unreal scene. We were
gonna do this, and like theidea was for me at least to kind
of goof around with Jed. Soyou know, Jed to music for his

(58:06):
years at Local twelve. I thinkthe last time we talked with him was
his last day on the air atLocal twelve. And he comes back into
town and he's gonna go to Valhallaand he puts him on Twitter that he's
back in town, and he,I think, jokingly says I'll do updates,
and I say, yeah, it'dbe kind of fun to talk to
somebody who's at the PGA Championship.Maybe maybe give folks an idea of what
it's like to go to a major, or for folks who have maybe never

(58:29):
been to a professional golf tournament, what it's like to attend one have some
fun. But now this is likethe biggest story in sports, and Jed
was watching Scotti Scheffler play today andso now he has to go back to
kind of being like a journalist eventhough he's down there with his buddies.
Longest intro ever, Jed, what'sup? Hey Mo, how's it going.
I think the last time I joinedyou was after the twenty twenty one

(58:52):
PGA that Phil won at Kiowa,So I'm happy too. I was in
attendance for that as well, soI'm happy to join the game today.
So all right, So you guysare down there, And by the way,
Jed's also part of a podcast withMatt Edward's Tough Sleddings, so you
should check that out. Two sportscastersturned non sportscasters doing a podcast. All

(59:13):
right, so you're down there, like with your boys, you're going to
hang out. When when you whenyou left to go to the golf course
this morning, did you have anyidea of what had happened? We did.
We we got up around six thirty, and we had somebody taking us
down to the course. I don'tthink I've ever looked at a tweet harder

(59:35):
to make sure that it was areal person saying something. Because I looked
at Jeff Darlington, I was like, is that how he spells his name?
It just was so unbelievable, theinitial report of what he was saying,
and obviously the tragic incident that youknow, a volunteer was was struck
and killed by a bus, soyou hear that, and then and then

(59:58):
you hear the Scottie Shepperd stuff andit's just really hard to wrap your mind
around. And when we got inthe car, we had no idea what
we were in for what it wouldlook like when we got here, if
lines would be backed up. Weended up getting here around eight thirty,
which is right around when play begantoday, and there was really no issue

(01:00:20):
at all. There was, Imean, it was business as usual,
but we just the entire car rightdown. We sort of had the time
that you did in terms of watching, you know, watching ESPN before we
left, and then looking on Twitteron the way down and seeing the mugshot
and wondering it is all of thisreal. It was certainly bizarre. So

(01:00:46):
he ends up playing, and heends up playing. All right, did
you follow him for the majority ofthe day once he teed off to start
his round, Well, we we. We caught him a couple of different
places on the course. It's reallyyou know, you really got to kind
of commit to following a guy aroundand being you know, five or six

(01:01:07):
deep if you want to do that. So we tried to pick our spots.
We tried to go a couple holesahead so that we could get a
good vantage point. And I meanyou would not or maybe you would believe,
but the amount of Tree Scheffler shirtsthat people are wearing right now with
mugshots. I talked to a kid, this kid, this this dad,

(01:01:29):
this kid's dad not kidding, tapme on the shoulder. He said,
Hey, can my son get onthe rope line? I was like,
yeah, absolutely. What I didn'trealize is that his son had a free
Scheffer shirt on and he wanted toget He was teeing off on six.
I'm sorry five, you're seen offon five, and we were standing there
and so yeah, I'm like, yeah, absolutely, come up on the

(01:01:50):
rope line. And this kid juststarted making an absolute scene with the shirt,
and I said, how do youguys get this shirt? Is there
somebody outside selling him? He goes, No, he goes, we have
one of those cricket machines. Andmy wife came home from work, yeah
this morning once we saw what wasgoing on, and she screenprinted real quick,
and we came out here and I'mlike, and and he's not the

(01:02:12):
only I mean, they're they're allover the place and people were just I
mean, I don't think he's goingto get and I know he's he's probably
rattled, but he is probably soexcited to just go home and take his
shoes off and unwind. Like it'sgot to be one of the most ridiculous
days. He goes from what happenedto him this morning to eighteen holes of

(01:02:36):
free Scotty, free Scotty. Imean, it just had to be.
Yeah, yeah, I mean,he's the best golfer in the world.
I mean, he's I mean thatthat just shows you. You know,
I saw somebody. I mean, there's so many things that were said,
but you know, you can't stophim. You can only hope to detain
him. I mean that's just reallywhat it is. He's just he's just

(01:02:59):
that good right now. You know, he's a new dad. You know,
everyone's like, well, maybe youknow he's a new dad, is
you know, transitioning in his lifeand all that kind of stuff, and
maybe that'll kind of slow him down. You know, this didn't slow him
down. I mean, this, this has all the makings of him being
one or two back on Sunday andwinning by four shots. I mean,

(01:03:20):
just I mean, I am gonnahold off on judging what happened with the
incident this morning, I don't know, but regardless, the amount of concentration
that you must be able to possessto not just get through the round and
be marginally competitive, but to shootfive under there and be in the hunt

(01:03:45):
is. Look, it goes withoutsaying he's a great golfer, but that
concentration is that's not something I canrelate to. Jed. No, not
even close. Not even close. And as we're talking right now, Tiger
Wood is making his way up seven, so you know, to see Tiger
and obviously he's he's having a roughstart to his round today and he's got

(01:04:08):
some work to do. But allthe comparisons, you know, maybe unfair
whatever, you know, in termsof what Tiger did, but that level
of concentration hasn't happen. There areonly a few golfers who have ever played
that have been able to dial itin to that degree. And you know,
we're watching one walk by right nowon the seventh pool. So Scottie

(01:04:30):
Scheffler is always going to have biggalleries. How much in your opinion,
how much bigger were they because ofwhat happened this morning? Dude, you
could you could have been up onthe rope on every hole that he wasn't
on, not kidding. And itwas rainy this morning, so the rain
may have kept some people away. And it's the you know, the afternoon

(01:04:54):
waves I think started around one pointthirty two o'clock and it's picked up.
There's a lot more people here. But this morning we were walking around and
we actually grabbed a you know,a hot dog or whatever, and we
said, we said to one ofthe vendors, he said, have you
ever worked at PGA before? Andhe goes, yeah, I've worked the
last five I'm like, what doyou think of the crowd today? Goes,
it's been dead all week. Therehaven't been that many people here,

(01:05:17):
you know, yesterday today and allthat kind of stuff. So it's picking
up a little bit now. Butthis morning, if you weren't following Scotty,
you could see a lot of othergood golf and you could see it
up close and personal because may havebeen weather, may have been may have
been Scotty, But there weren't alot of people here this morning, all

(01:05:39):
right, So for a second,if you can set the Scottie Shuffler stuff
aside, what is it like attendinga major at Valhalla compared to other places
you've been. I mean, it'sit's fantastic. I think you do have
to kind of decide, you know, when you're going with a group of
people, what's important in terms ofare you just trying to see the most

(01:06:02):
golf shots that you can do?You want to see people make putt?
You know, you just got tokind of have a plan a little bit.
But in terms of this venue asopposed to others that I've been to,
it's right up there. The thingabout Valhalla is it was purchased by
the PGA of America I think innineteen ninety eight, So they had the

(01:06:25):
PGA in ninety six, the onethat Mark Brooks won, and then the
Tiger playoff victory over Bob May andthen Rory in twenty fourteen, and then
this one. And the club hassince been sold, you know, at
the risk of telling you something youalready know, the club has since been
sold to members of Valhalla. Sothe PGA isn't going to look as favorably

(01:06:49):
on Valhalla for future majors now thatit's not under their ownership, if that
makes any sense. And obviously theincident this morning probably didn't help things.
What this might be the very lastmajor? Yeah, what what's what's the
craziest thing? Someone yelled at ScottiShuffler as he was playing. It's a

(01:07:12):
I'm actually right by the green,so I have to be a little use
my golfe right now. It wasa it was a song by nw A.
I think that's just as deep asI can go with that. I
understand. Yes, yes, Ihit the reference that was are you there
all weekend? And it was I'mnot I'm not just here today. We

(01:07:34):
wanted to spend the day here andsee everybody before the cut tomorrow and yeah,
just today and looking forward to watchingthe final two rounds on television.
Somebody just made a punt somebody didn'tI and I tell you what, I
couldn't tell you who it might havebeen, Tigered. I'm I am eighty

(01:07:57):
five people deep, standing in themud talking you at the last of my
cell phone battery right now. That'show much I care about you. Mo.
Wow, man you are you arethe absolute best. Well, it's
great to hear your voice. Iappreciate you popping on. It was bizarre
to watch. I'm envious in thefact that you were there. And there's
obviously a very tragic element to thisthat should not be forgotten, but nonetheless,

(01:08:19):
but bizarre television this morning. Iappreciate you joining me. Have a
good time, man, Thank youas always. All right, thank you
Mill. That's our buddy Jed deMuci, formerly of a local twelve.
He is at the PGA Championship downthere at Valhalla in Louisville. Bizarre thirteen
away from five o'clock busy. Ourthree consecutive guests, and if you go

(01:08:42):
back to the three o'clock hour, five consecutive guests, we haven't even started
to address guests the foot. Wemight do that next on ESPN fifteen thirty
Cincinnati sports station Rocky Here I'm veryexcited to ship ain't away from five o'clock.
This is ESPN fifteen. Three polequestions, one about Elie de la

(01:09:03):
Cruz, one about t Higgins, and one about eighty dollars pants. All
right, we're gonna do this atat five twenty. We're doing this by
demand. Every day this week wehave been giving away tickets to go see
Hoody and the Blowfish and we've playeddumb trivia games. They've been a lot
of fun. But yesterday the overwhelmingconsensus was, it's Friday, we want

(01:09:26):
to play a game of guess thefoot. And so if if you go
to my website ESPN fifteen thirty dotcom slash mo, you'll see the link
on it. I am literally secondsaway from hitting post on my Twitter feed
and if you go check that out, click on the link, there's the
foot. I'm gonna give you sometime to study it, and at five

(01:09:46):
point twenty we're gonna play a gameof Guess the foot for one last pair
of tickets to go see Hooty andthe Blowfish at Riverbend on June seventh.
At Moegger on Twitter. Right now, though, it's time for Brendamanage ownes
on Baseball Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Trafficfrom the UC Health Traffic Center during National

(01:10:10):
Hospital Week. We thank our ucHealth team for their expert care that gives
our community the chance for a brightfuture and healthier tomorrow. As an accident
on fields Irdle Road at Butler WarrenRoad, there's a crash on seventy one
South at Fifer Road. And there'sa disabled vehicle on Rapid Run Pike at
Cobdale Avenue from John Crawford with trafficthis red. This is ESPN fifteen thirty,

(01:10:31):
Cincinnati Sports Station. All right, here we go. Good afternoon on
the Leger. This is ESPN fifteenthirty. It is the highly anticipated,
long awaited, well deserved five o'clockHappy Hour on ESPN fifteen thirty. Happy
Hour any day of the week isawesome. The five o'clock Happy Hour on
Fridays is the best. It's aservice of michelob Ultra. On your way

(01:10:56):
home tonight, stop and then pickup a case of michelob Ultrum. I
did that. I gotta be honestwith you, I did that this morning.
Michelob Ultra is perfect. No matterwhat you're doing this summer Memorial Day
is coming up. It's about tobe not so much today, I guess,
but it's about to be pool season. When you're out in the golf
course. If you're going to thetrack, no matter what you're doing,
Michelobultra, you cannot beat it.And uh, well, since it's Friday

(01:11:19):
at five, I'm having one rightnow. We have a game of Guess
the foot coming up in just aboutfifteen minutes. I know you're excited for
that. I have posted the linkon Twitter at Moeger. We'll get to
today's poll questions. In the aftermathof last night's Red's went over the Dodgers,
maybe a little bit more on theScottie Scheffler situation, which I'll be

(01:11:40):
honest with you, I find bizarreand weird and strange, and there's a
hugely tragic element to it. There'salso a really humorous element to it that
is sort of a side and apartfrom the tragedy. But again, like
this morning, I just sat therea wht like what is going on here?

(01:12:01):
And then he plays and you know, I had it on here and
I'm preparing for a show and doinga bunch of stuff, but I don't
know what I don't. I'm ina reserve judgment and hold off on breaking
down the incident that led him ledto him getting arrested. I think that's
probably the safest route, but Ihave a hard time concentrating if I've like,

(01:12:25):
had a bad day at work onthe golf course, he got arrested,
spent some time in jail this morning, and then went out and shot
five under and is two off thelead in Round two of the PGA Championship.
Meanwhile, the Reds last night,Let's be honest, that's one of
the more unlikely wins they've had ina very very long time. Individual baseball

(01:12:51):
games are never really upsets. Teamswith bad records beat teams with good records
all the time. It's one ofthe things that makes the sport fun.
And so the Reds beating the Dodgersseven to two at phase value, like
the Reds don't have a good record, the Dodgers have a great record.

(01:13:11):
That's not that surprising. Happens allthe time. If I would have said
yesterday afternoon, the Reds are gonnawin the game against the Dodgers, you
would have said, probably not.But it wouldn't have been that far fetched
a statement. But when you addsome context, this team offensively has been
abysmal in every way you could beabysmal. They haven't hit for power,

(01:13:33):
they haven't gotten guys on base, they've been bad on the base paths.
They were going up last night againsta very good pitcher in Tyler Glass.
Now, they were playing a Dodgersteam that had won seven straight at home,
and the Reds were not going touse a starting pitcher last night.
And yet they win the ball gameseven to two. They took a seven
zip lead into the ninth inning. It's a credit to a lot of different

(01:13:56):
things. Man. I do thissomewhat tongue in cheek, but look,
man, if we're just gonna whaleaway at David Bell every time they lose
because of an individual maneuver that hemakes in the game, you've at least
got to acknowledge when he hits theright buttons. When you have to get
through a bullpen game, that's reallyreally hard. When you have to get

(01:14:17):
through a bullpen game against a lineupthat includes Mookie Betts, show Hey o
Tani Uh, Freddy Freeman. Thoseare the first three in the Dodgers order
last night. Now, no WillSmith last night, but still you've got
to get through that lineup, andyou've got to do it with a bullpen.
It really does put a premium onhitting the right buttons. Now it

(01:14:38):
helps when you score runs and theRed scored runs early, and they play
it at on baseball on the thirdand then again in the fifth. But
dude, I think you gotta befair. You might not like David Bell.
He used seven pitchers last night. He hit the right buttons early in
the game. And then Nick Martinezcame in. I don't know what kind
of season Nick Martinez is gonna have. I don't know what sort of impacted

(01:14:59):
on this team he's gonna have.Last night, though they needed somebody to
eat up a lot of innings,he didn't just eat up five. He
excelled in them. Five innings ofone run, four strikeout baseball. They
never threatened him. He was outstanding. Will Benson kind of set the tone
with the home run to lead offthe ballgame, and then Ellie Dela Cruz
put on a show four for four, scores three times, he drives in

(01:15:24):
a run, he steals four bases. He came very close, very close
to stealing a fifth he created havoc. He was unbelievable last night. He
was He was unbelievable. He hewalks in the top of the fifth inning
in a three to nothing ballgame. He steals second, he steals third,
he scores on a wild pitch. He creates the run by himself. This

(01:15:45):
terrible offensive team, and that's whatthey've been. They get a run without
anybody getting a hit, all becauseof Ellie Delacruz. Look, man,
you could be jaded. You couldbe skeptical. You can think that what
the Reds are trying to do isnot going to work. All that stuff
is fair, and it's up tothe Reds as an organization and this baseball

(01:16:08):
team in particular, to change that. You could be frustrated. You could
be apathetic, You could be angstfilled, you could be angry. Whatever
emotions you're aiming at the Cincinnati Redsare fair. You could be hopeful.
You could be optimistic. You couldthink that a turnaround is in the offing.
You could believe that this team's betterdays this season are still in front

(01:16:31):
of it, especially when the scheduleeases up. Regardless of where you are,
regardless of where you are on thatspectrum, and I can find people
who think the Reds are going tolose ninety five games. I'm sure I
can find people who can convince themselvesthe Reds are going to win ninety five
games. I can find people whothink that there's no end in sight to
the losing. I can find peoplewho think, you know what, what

(01:16:53):
the Reds are doing this year, what they've done so far is merely a
speed bump on the way toward seasonafter season after season of success. There's
a wide range of opinions. Timewill tell who's right. What I would
like to think that we could allagree on is it's a hell of a
lot of fun watching Ellie Della Cruz. Where he is now is maybe not

(01:17:14):
where he needs to be. Wherehe is now is maybe not where he
ends up. Where he is nowmight end up being as good as he's
ever going to be. I don'tknow. Watching him play baseball is worth
watching, like it's still worth payingattention to this team. It's still worth
paying attention. You know, therehave been players in Cincinnati sports that when

(01:17:38):
the teams haven't been all that good, their performances or their development still made
watching the team worthwhile. I loveCorey Dillon for that reason. He played
on some horrific teams. I usedto watch him run against eight nine men
fronts in games the Bengals had nochance of winning, But he played his
ass off and he was productive, and he made it worth watching them.

(01:18:01):
I watched Joey Vano in the depthsof the mid twenty tens, when the
rosters were anonymous and they were goingnowhere, But watching him apply his craft
in the middle of some lost seasonsmade it still worthwhile. Watching Ellie de
la Cruz do Ellie de la Cruzthings. Watching him grow and develop and
get better and impact games and justdo things that very few people can do,

(01:18:29):
still makes it fun to watch. This team still makes it fun and
worthwhile, still makes it worth stayingup late last night to watch the Reds.
You may disagree with that to adegree, but I still think that's
a really fun part of this team. I still think that's a really interesting
part of this team. I stillthink that's a really good part of this
team. I'm not here to tellyou that he's a superstar. I'm not

(01:18:53):
here to do the whole debate abouthow good he's gonna be or if he's
gonna be and I don't care aboutthat today. Last night I cared about
that score, and I cared aboutthe game, and I wanted them to
win, and I want them toturn this around. And maybe maybe last
night will prove to be one ofthose pivot points where the season goes in
a better direction. I don't know. What I do know, man,
is watching him last night was ablast. And watching him grow into the

(01:19:16):
role that I think we are,that I that I that I that I
think we all believe he can growinto is going to be worthwhile. It's
gonna make this season worth it.It's gonna make watching the Reds worth it.
It doesn't mean the team's gonna turnthings around. It doesn't mean they're
gonna realize their potential. It doesn'tmean they're not going to frustrate. But
holy hell, man, if ifyou can have fun watching Ellie de la

(01:19:39):
Cruz legitimately, what's the point. But I said that to my buddy,
who I was watching the game withlate last night. If if you can't
enjoy watching him, what's the point. What's the point of caring? What's
what's the point of watching the games? And so it's not the most profound
takeaway, but it's a takeaway theless and it's a takeaway that I'm gonna

(01:20:02):
repeat often this season. Because doesn'tmean that he's immune to slumps. He's
not. Doesn't mean that he can'tfrustrate like none of these guys have hit
recently. Uh, but last nightagainst perhaps the best team in the sport
in an iconic venue, in frontof fifty three thousand people, with help
from his teammates like Will Benson andall those relief pitchers including obviously Nick Martinez

put my money. He steals alot of bases. The pace was accelerated
dramatically last night by him stealing four. My guess is he settles somewhere between
seventy and eighty. Eric Davis hadeighty and nineteen eighty six. Vote Now
at Moeger, are you worried aboutT Higgins suddenly coming up with injuries out
of nowhere this season? Seventy pointfour percent of you say no. I

(01:22:47):
would agree with that, And againI come back to what we said yesterday
New Year's Eve twenty twenty three.T Higgins willed himself back onto the field
despite dealing with a hamstring injury hesuffered in that game. I can only
go by the track record and maybethe most important pole question of the day,
have you ever paid eighty dollars fora pair of pants? So?

(01:23:10):
I guess the police officer involved inthis Scotti Scheffler situation his pants were damaged.
They value the estimated value of thosepolice officers pants eighty dollars. Have
you ever paid eighty dollars for apair of pants? Now, I've paid
more than eighty dollars for a suit, not much more, but I don't
think I've ever in my life paideighty dollars for a pair of pants.

I don't think so. Fifty fourpoint seven percent of you say yes,

last round of guesses, somebody venturedto guess Sean Casey and somebody guessed Ken
Griffy Junior. The person who ownsthe foot in question was a teammate of

both of those players, so youknow that that can provide a little context.
But the person whose foot we're talkingabout here was teammates with both Ken
Griffy Jr. And Sean Casey, who were earlier guesses incorrect guesses, but
still earlier guesses in this round ofof guests the foot. So as you

this guy was teammates with Aaron Boonetoo, So you know, I feel
like if you, if you keepthis in mind, we're kind of narrowing
it down. So we've got somebodywho is a teammate of Sean Casey,
somebody who is a teammate of AaronBoone, somebody who was a teammate of
Ken Griffy Jr. Now remember Ididn't say he was teammates with those players
all at the same time. Butwell, you can draw your own conclusion.

over to Monday. It's like asuspended baseball game. You just pick it
up the next time the two teamsget on the field, and so I
guess. Before we could do theregularly scheduled show on Monday, we would
have to finish the game of Guessthe Foot from this show on Friday,
on Monday afternoon. I'll probably bea first. Wouldn't it whole weekend?
