Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a final game before the World Cup break at
home on Saturday night, with a tilt against Orlando City,
two teams that are they're very closely bunched together there
in the middle pack of the Eastern Conference, Orlando three
points behind FC Cincinnati and d C United. The Orange
and Blue coming off that three all draw against San Diego,

(00:22):
they could badly use three points, if for no other reason,
then you'd like to think about that for the next
two months before they play again. Kaylen Carr from Apple
TV joins us to talk about the match and the
season so far. Kalen, good to have you. You know
it's you always won three points. I don't know after
such an up and down first three months of the season.
I don't know if you're Pat Noonan's team that you

(00:42):
want to spend two months thinking about not getting three points.
Would you agree? No?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
I think you want to leave on a high And
I think, yeah, the way you described it, the up
and down is exactly how Pat Nowton put it when
I spoke to him earlier today. And I think when
you're going through that kind of topsy turvy situation, it's
a long time to think about it going into I
think a World Cup break where you're going to see
some changes potentially to the roster. I think a number

(01:08):
of teams are going to be doing that. Same with
the other side, with Orlando City, they've already lost their
manager this year they signed Dan Swan Griesman, the French
World Cup champions, So I think there's going to be
a ton of change, a lot of questions being asked
in the World Cup break. But I think more than anything,
you want to go out on a high note, and

(01:28):
right now they're crawling and scratching and fighting for every
single point to try to keep themselves right around that
playoff list.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
You mentioned Pat Noonan, and you know Chris Albright in
charge of the rosters, so a lot of time to
make some changes, and I think Pat Noonan has done
a good job just keeping things afloat. But if you're
Chris Albright on that to do list in terms of
fixing the roster, where does that begin.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, I think the offensive has been good. You look
at Kevin Denke has been scoring and Evander maybe didn't
start his best, but he had that injury in match
Day one where he had to come off and then
took a little while to get going as of late,
has been absolutely the evander that we've seen over the years.
So I think the obvious point is clearly in the

(02:15):
back line, and you know whether they're where that piece
is gonna come from, who it is, and then what
happens to the remaining pieces. But you just think of
the goals conceded that miasga Is, you know, has had
an amazing run here, but I think at this point
is not looking the same way that we've seen him

(02:38):
in the past. And Haglin, I think has been used
in the past and the better f C Cincinnati defenses
more as a rotation piece than necessarily starting trying to
play every single match and being that sort of weight
on his shoulders. And so I think Miles Robinson was
the one where you're saying he was the piece that
was gonna hold together. He's had some injury in and

(03:00):
out now informed he's got the World Cup waiting. So
I think there's some questions as far as how you
solve that that back three or if you go to
a back four eventually, And these are the questions that
I think more than anything, they're going to be coming
on the defensive end.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
For me, how would you assess how Pat Noonan has
handled what has been it's been three months. It's felt
like it's been an entire season, just in less than
half of one. There have been times where it's felt
like Pat Nonon has been exasperated. He's early in the
season talked about like I'm kind of running out of
ideas here. There have been times where I felt like
he's been a voice of calm amidst some very rough times.
There have been times where even in defeat, he's talked about, hey,

(03:37):
we've stumbled upon some things here. Give me your take
on how Pat's handled the season so far.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
I mean, honestly, yeah, you can see he wears each
each result and that the expectations have not been sacrificed.
And I think for me as a former player and
somebody that's watched tat Noon on the field playing against him,
then now as a manager, that's the positive to me
is that they're not going to just say, Okay, well,

(04:06):
look this isn't our best season so far. And I
think if you look across the Eastern Conference, there's been
this is not out of the norm. Philadelphia finished first
last year in the supporter Shield race there in the
last place position across the entire league. Orlando City was
expected to be one of the top four teams I think,
along with Cincinnati fighting for the top. Now it's eight, sorry,

(04:29):
nine to ten right now going into this last match.
Columbus they just let go of their manager, have been really,
really struggling. These are teams that, for me, almost in
the past four or five years, you would put down
as these are the top four along with Inter Miami
as like these are the big dogs of the East,

(04:50):
And so that's changed now. I think the Western Conference
has been more of the standout conference this year. But
I think these these coaches and managers and I think
hatting in and especially with know that things can change
quickly in MLS, you get a good run for him,
and I think especially this year with the World Cup break,
it's gonna almost feel like two seasons. I've been hearing
that across the league, and I think this year especially

(05:11):
that's going to be true with teams retooling. But I
think a lot of it will come down to the
moves they make and how albreak handles this next month
or two in the transfer market.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Kaylan car Apple tv FC, Cincinnati and Orlando City on
Saturday night, last match before the World Cup break. Orlando
City just played in the US Open Cup against Atlanta,
So they've gotten either a victory or at least a
point in each of their last three between two different
types of competitions. Where can Orlando City create problems for

(05:42):
SC Cincinnati?

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, when I mentioned things can change quickly, there's no
better case than Orlando City. They lost their manager, they
were on pace for setting the worst defensive record in
MLS history, one of the worst seasons in MLS history,
and next thing you know, now you wake up a
few weeks later, they get a good a couple of
games conference or excuse me, a US Open Cup semi
and they're in the playoffs. So it's just kind of

(06:05):
incredible to see. The big thing that's clicked has been offensively.
They've been absolutely flying, scoring goals for fun. They still
leak some defensively, although they have gotten more solid since
their defender Robin Johnson and and Breckelo have been kind
of solidifying things defensively, but I think there's still ways
to get at them. And Cincinnati's attack has been good

(06:27):
as of late, So this one looks like it has
the makings of what could be a shootout as far
as goals go on both sides, because just as much
as Orlando City will push forward with numbers, they do
leave space, especially in transition, and if Vander can get
into those little pockets and you get den K going,
it could be a It could be a really entertaining

(06:47):
game for a neutral. And then who actually comes out
on top. I think is a pretty even match, although
I think both teams would say maybe not in their
best moment, although I think that probably trend a little
bit more towards Orlando City with just a bit more confidence,
especially in the attack as of late.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Yeah, well said, enjoy the game and the World Cup break, Kaitlyn,
thanks so much, can't.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Wait to be in town, and thanks for having me
on the show.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
