ESPRN fifteen thirty. Hey there, what's up. Good afternoon, muagg or
ESPN fifteen thirty. Appreciate you listening. Hopefully you're having an unbelievable Tuesday afternoon.
I had to mentally check and seewhat day it is, neglecting the
fact that like four feet away isa guy who's here on Tuesdays, Paul

(00:21):
Danner Junior, is here to basicallycarry me through the hour. Yeah,
I mean, I'm I'm just yourI'm your calendar right now. I'm here,
I'm ready, I'm ready, I'mI'm fully strengthened, I'm energized.
I could take by our Joe Burrowpress compass. So here we go.
Got a good cup of Joe today, and now you're ready to go feed
the peasants there with the bread thatthey need. We need our Burrow nuggets.

(00:42):
Look, I can be cynical, guy, I can be jaded,
guy. I could I could tryto wear those hats. I will be
the first to admit to you thatyesterday and today, every piece of Twitter
video of Joe Burrow throwing footballs havinghis hat knocked off by the blocking dummy,
I'm here for all of that.Yes, I mean what else.

(01:03):
I'm not going to pretend that I'mnot better than the alternative of him not
being out there, correct us talkingabout how he's not throwing or whatever it
is. Yeah, No, it'sa it's all good. It's all it's
it's good. It's good to seethat happening right now and everybody. Bengals
fans have been happy to share theirexcitement with the internet. Yes, which
is great. It's been great.Paul Danner Jinder covering the Bengals four uh,

(01:27):
the Athletic dot Com, the thepodcast The Growler which live in person
on on on site. Yeah, deal, last week Day or Kitchen and
Bar and bet MGM was awesome, big success. It was big success.
Mike Potts was great. Although yourNicks lost, they came back and got
it, got the win after thatto advance and so I got and I

(01:49):
got to watch you suffer in person. You did. Yeah, that was
a tough I haven't lost. Ihaven't lost since. I haven't lost since.
So here you go. Yeah.I at the end of the and
I go home and my wife saysto me, how was the podcast?
And I go what? Because ofall the other stuff that had been going
on, really it was really goodand check that out, as we say,

(02:13):
where you get your podcasts. JoeBurrow talked today, We'll have some
of that for you a little bitlater on. Did he say anything interesting?
Yes, I thought so. Ithought he said one of the more
interesting things that he's ever said.We have spent a lot of time here

(02:34):
talking about what's next for Joe Burrowand discussing how did this guy stay healthy?
What are you going to you know, is this going to be something
that follows him and the lessons oflast year with setbacks with the calf and
and all the stuff that went onlast year and the risk and this,
that and the other. I thoughthim talking about the kind of the self

(02:59):
reflective accountability that he took on himselfof admitting I gotta be better at admitting
when I'm not all the way there, and not trying to push through every
injury and not trying to push throughevery day and discussing that kind of with
the training staff and being more honestabout the need to do that. I

(03:21):
think this is an critical evolution ofJoe Burrow's career. I mean, you
can tell this is a guy whoyou know, he says he's addicted to
being better with one of the thingsthat he said today, and for him
right now, getting better is aboutunderstanding when why his body feels the way
it does sometimes and not pushing hisway through that because he's he's wired differently.

(03:45):
Right, everyone's gonna say that's weknow this. He's he is this
crazy competitive never wants to miss arep every day is insanely important to him.
That's how he's made his life, that's how he's gotten to this point,
having to rewire himself to understand thatit is there is a pert there's

(04:08):
an important part of his process, and that is he's got to find ways
to stay out there all the timeand not be so consumed with showing that
he's superman or he's immune the setbacks, or he's this invincible hero. I
think he's felt that way a littlebit and understand that he's saying, I'm
learning from that. I'm learning toevolve that way. And it's you try

(04:30):
to learn something every year. Thisis me. This year's telling you,
I'm trying to be better at that. I'm trying to be better at listening
to those around me, not pushingmyself too much, not having what happened
last year happen again because partially insome of his own decisions in that regard,
and so I thought that was huge. I thought he was really good

(04:55):
on that and really honest about howhard that is kind of to do when
you're built the way he's kind ofbeen built. And I thought that was
a big step. And I gottasay, not something I necessarily expected to
hear from him today. I thoughtit was a little bit further than I
thought he would go. All right, so he talked, but then he
threw. He practiced that happened too. What was that like? That was

(05:17):
very normal? I mean I thought, you know, he threw deep,
he threw short, he threw offplatform, he kind of ran around a
little bit. That didn't that lookednormal enough. You know, he's obviously
going through it still where he feelsstuff in his wrist, He's he's on
the tail end, still in therea. He's not fully clear, not
fully clear. He's clear, butnot cover contacts. So he's not all

(05:39):
the way back. And he admitshere there's probably gonna be you know,
more of that as he goes forward, and there's an unknown nature to what
is actually gonna happen when he getsto the next two, three, four
months. But for now, Imean, look for for where he's at
for the first day of OTAs.Take it out there, throwing the ball
deep, throwing deep outs, throwit do whatever, like like, yeah,

(06:00):
yeah, that's it, that's whatyou wanted to see. That's box
checked as far as I'm concerned.Yeah, I mean, if you would
have told me that Thursday night inNovember when he gets hurt against the Baltimore
Ravens, that you know, thefirst day on the field, i'll see
video of him chucking it downfield.Sign me up for that, and then
we'll go from there. Very goodstep in the right direction. Yeah,
And and I thought the fact thathe was kind of doing every throw was

(06:21):
was great. There was no limitationsof hey, just keep it tight inside
twenty five yards or don't do this, or don't run around and do try
you know, he was against thegrain, kind of flicking of the wrist
back the other direction. You know, that's all. That's great stuff to
see. If you've got it behindthe back pass, you got that,
you got it behind the back pass. That's the next step, right,

(06:42):
forget everything else. He's gonna throwit two to three behind the back passes
per game. This is the newJoe Burt had a compression sleeve on.
Yeah, have to document that.No headband, no headband, backwards hat
today. Yeah, Now there isa The national sports talk radio host Colin
Cowherd famously doesn't like backward hat quarterbacks. Okay, I just thought i'd mentioned

(07:06):
that. Yeah, well, Idon't know why. I mean now that
Joe's not associated his right, thisis his rebellion. This is rebellion from
those days. There are only ahandful of us who can pull off backward
hat. He can't. I Ilike I head backward hat today because I
do backward hat when I mean businessreally, when I'm like that's how we

(07:29):
know when I'm really busy and i'mand I'm writing, that's then to it
my hat goes around. I don'tknow why. It's just something that's happened
to me. I have a haton. I go that's the uh kind
of it's kind of like a messageto anybody else, like please don't talk.
That's what I need in the office. Yeah, you kind of always
have that, right, No,because I come in and sit down and
it's like, you know, wegot to relitigate last night sporting event,

(07:51):
that sort of thing. Yeah, and get everybody, I get everybody else's
talk show. What I can dois now start wearing the backward hat,
which I've always admitted I really can'tpull off. Yeah, and maybe that'll
be the sign that, hey, look for now I'm grinding away preparing a
show. Yeah, maybe you geta hat that says not now exclamation point,

(08:11):
turn it around backwards, and somaybe that's a clearer message. That's
a clear message. Yeah. NowI'm not now hat. Yeah, but
I mean that's that's That's as faras I go with with backward hat.
I'm not a I tend to notbe a active backward hat guy, but
it happens. Yeah, I'll weara backward hat. I just think I
look goofy wearing it, but Idoesn't doesn't bomb in. Look at me.

(08:35):
You look kind of goofy in aforward hat. I like, just
goofy. Yeah. Have you seenme with it off? Right? I
know? Which, By the way, we're not both wearing hats today.
This is kind of a change forus. Talking about turning over a new
lead. Usually we both end upin the same thing. Either either bald
or hat and it's really sort ofpeak off though. That's why. Oh
yeah, that's true. Follow PaulDanner Junior on Twitter at Paul Danner Junior.

(09:00):
He's here till four cover the Bengalsfor the Athletic. We have a
slew of things to get too.I'm here toll six. Red's play tonight.
I think the worst of the badweather is behind us. The Diamondbacks
are in town. TJ. Friedel'soff the injured list, Frankie Montas is
off the injured list. It's beena busy day of Red's transactions. We'll
get to all of that coming upin the four o'clock hour show. Preview
video is available on x at moegar. Thanks to our friends at Emery Federal

(09:24):
Credit Union, your credit Union withheart since nineteen thirty nine. Gond EMORYFCU
dot Org, a Bengals executive, turntowns a chance to be at gm I.
We'll get to that and so muchmore with Paul Want Me Come Back
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. The ESPN fifteen thirty Moegger, Paul
Danner Junior from The Athletic and TheGrowler podcast is here with us till four

(09:46):
o'clock. Joe Burrow talked today. We'll have some of that for you coming
up in one hour. Can Ijust one more thing on Joe Burrow speaking
today? Yeah? Can you guysshout your questions? Yeah? As an
I'm usually kind of kind of abooming voice, as an outlet that carries
these press conferences, that carries thesemedia sessions. I'm We've done this for

(10:11):
a long time. I don't knowwhy it just bothers me now, but
I mean, can can we figureout a way for us to hear your
questions? If the Bengals aren't gonnaprovide you with a microphone or a podium
or something, can you do usa favor and just start screaming as loud
as you can your questions? Ibelieve, Yeah, I'll go ahead.
I mean, I usually feel likeI have a decent decent you project well

(10:33):
you project we like, that's justthe nature of my voice, and I'm
usually sitting right up there front,so I feel like it gets picked up,
and pick it up. I'll geteven louder for it. I need
you to set an example for thepeople that aren't quite as good for the
folks in the back for the peoplewho you know, maybe don't speak as
loudly to just if you start kindof making an example of we need to

(10:58):
yell for the broadcast asked outlets includingthe Bengal Zone streaming their YouTube or Twitter
whatever other social media platforms. Ijust I'm trying to listen to Joe Burrow
today on our air, and I'mI'm like, I can't what are the
questions? I hear the answers, but the answers need the proper context of
a question. Maybe I should justapproach the desk and say it into his

(11:22):
microphone. Fine, just start walkingforward, Okay, right, and just
whatever I be taken, we alljust take a turn walking up there.
Yes, it does seem like itshouldn't be too difficult to get a doesn't
have to be a handle, butjust one that's just picking up sound amongst
the in the area. Okay,So here's what I'll drawl upon my experience.
Okay, back in the day,one of my odd jobs at the

(11:46):
radio station was on Mondays and Wednesdaysgo down to the press conference and hold
a boom microphone and sort of holdit over the head of who was ever
it was asking the questions, sowe least on this radio station could hear
the questions. We don't have thatperson anymore like that version that me back

(12:07):
then. We don't have a guythat's just being assigned to odd jobs holding
the boom microphone. But also we'reno longer the only outlet that's carrying these
press conferences. So could the Bengalshire an intern to get one of these
big boom microphones, borrow one fromNFL films. They used them all the
time during hard knocks and just holdthem over the head of the person asking

(12:30):
the question. They have them,I've seen them, because why don't they
use them? I don't. Idon't. I don't know. I've not
I've not heard, I've not addressedit. I don't know. I do
know that the boom might exists, and they have lots of content. People
now, yes, So I feellike I feel like this is in play.
You know, maybe if maybe ifyou addressed it a little softer and

(12:50):
in an email or something instead ofget over the airwaves, you might have
things. Got to be authentic tomyself. I have to make it a
whole big thing. I need content. It's may the Reds aren't very good
right now, Okay, I getit. I'm gonna get a whole nother
segment in the five o'clock hour onare the Bengals too cheap to hire a

(13:11):
boom mic operator? Also at UCpress conferences, now your your colleague,
your buddy Jay Morrison said he doesn'twant this, But I go to the
UC Press conferences and they pass onthe phone around, don't like, pass
the night, don't like, butthen then come up with something else.
Boom microphone would be fine. Boommicrophone? Anything better? Silence and a
and a player or a coach answeringquestions that we can hear. I just

(13:33):
think a microphone that's out amongst usin the middle would pick up a line
that you would get it fine orboom mic boom mic persons. Why not
just have like a like you've everseen, like a board of education meeting,
where there's like a microphone and peopleline up and you take turns asking
your question. I think this wouldbe a good idea for two reasons.

(13:54):
Number one, you would ask onequestion then go to the back of the
line. You'd have to wait,So no, no two parters, right,
no hog in the microphone number two, we could hear the questions,
Yeah, I don't like the lineI gotta say, not a big lineup
on the side. Guy. No, it happened. I've I've been a
part of times when it has happenedbefore. I've seen I prefer not to
do that. But you know,in terms of just for you, yeah,

(14:18):
no for our audience, I know, I know, but yes for
me, of course you mostly forme. Everything I do is self serving,
yes, mostly for me. Wecall it the mo mic, the
moment microphone. The Bengals asked me, not that many years ago, if
I would give them suggestions on howto better engage fans, and I typed
out an email. Here you go, here's some ideas. Never gotta thank

(14:39):
you. Uh so perhaps a wasthat in there? No, that was
about the stadium experience. Oh okay, and I just I added some suggestion
time for a new email. Andso now it's a new email. Can
you make our job easier carrying thesepress conferences that were contractually obligated to carry
by allowing the audience to hear thequestion yea, and in the absence of

(15:01):
that, just needs you to shoutI'm gonna I'm just going to approach people
and talking to their microphones like lean, do it like casual lean, No
problem, you know, yeah, bring a megaphone, Oh hysterical megaphone.
Yeah, we'll just we'll just breakthe whole thing out. I love it.

(15:24):
I look forward to that in thenext press conference. The news came
out this week the Patriots are stilllooking for a general manager and they reached
out to to Trey Brown, whoworks for the Bengals, and Trey said,
no, thanks, I'd rather workfor the Bengals. I think that's
a name that a lot of peopleare not familiar with. Yeah. I
had him actually on the Growler ofthe week of the draft talking with his

(15:46):
background because he's his background is reallyunique. I mean he he started he's
for a player, but he startedin personnel in New England and obviously plenty
of winning there, Philadelphia winning theirSuper Bowl, and actually he was a
GM in with the XFL for ayear and then came here and they start
have been winning. He's kind ofbeen surrounded by winning his whole year.

(16:08):
He's kind of been a quick riser. He's been He's been in a lot
of these circles of conversations about GMjobs. He's been an incredible asset to
the Bengals. Uh. They havereally, you know, liked everything that
he's done over there, and he'shad a big impact. So, yeah,
he's a when you're when you're asmall staff like they are, everybody

(16:29):
carries a lot of weight. ButTrey has come in and really quickly carried
a lot of weight. And Ithink his his arrow is up. He's
somebody who will be a GM somedayand I think he probably has bigger roles
in this organization in line for himif he wants them, and that's probably
part of the reason why he'd bewanting to stay here. It's not something
you associate with the Bengals, whichpeople being poached for front office position.

(16:53):
Yeah, obviously the coaching staff has, but it's not that's the the front
office, the executive role. Nobodyget a good chance on our front office
elsewhere for a promotion is just typicallynot something you associate with this franchise.
It's so weird, you know,I have not quite understood why there hasn't
been more opportunities for some of theirtop staffers that have been here. I

(17:15):
mean even for even for promotions, not to be GMS, but just to
be director of player personnel or someother because they've done such a nice job
of building here, they've you know, other you see Brian Callahan now and
the other coach. You see coachesstart to get jobs. You know,
there really should probably be more attentionpaid to some of the people on that
staff because you know, they're alsodoing more than most places, and maybe

(17:38):
that gets used against them in thesame way that kind of like Burrow got
used against the coaching staff for awhile. Well you got Burrow. Well
it's different what you're doing there.You're doing so many things. It's that's
not the way we want to operate, So we're not interested in your I'm
surprised by that. You would thinkthere would be more love for for some
some of the people that are onthat Snow staff there, And you're right,

(18:00):
you don't see this is one ofthe first times that you really feel
like you've heard them in that regard. So, but maybe that will change
his offseason. I don't know, but you know, you think that that's
coming create more positions. And inthe NFL, there's a well documented history
of people ascending to high profile rolesby sort of starting by doing more menial

(18:21):
tasks, and that's where the boommic operator can come in. Could be
the key. That's right. That'sdidn't know if you were going to make
it to the top, except thatone year on the boom micale that you
a foot in the door. You'reoperating the boom mic, but you're around
it. Eventually they give you someother stuff to do and as you know,
you're the GM right right, Yeah, that's now discuss I mean,

(18:44):
the way some NFL teams operate, wouldn't be implausible to imagine that being a
scenario teams around here where it feltlike that might be what happened twenty eight
minutes away from four o'clock. PaulDanner Juniors here. I need his take
on the defining issue of our timeas it relates to the Bengals. We'll
get his thoughts on Tyler Boyd officiallyleaving for a new team. If you

(19:04):
haven't seen, he is joining theTennessee Titans. A first look at some
interesting camp battles and storylines, andthe roast. We have a lot to
get to. The roast, theroast, the Tom Brady Roast. Sure
did you watch it? I've seenenough clips. Okay, you got a
feel for it? Between now andfour o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati

(19:25):
Sports Station Cincy three sixty with TonyPike. Do we want to move on?
The Doctor? Keith Gorn and AustinElmore. I think you should continue.
Let me keep going the Sincy threesixty tomorrow which twelve News on ESPN

(19:45):
train protection and guaranteed credit approval fromtheir family to yours for life, kelseyshev
dot Com. Tjfriedel is back activatedfrom the injured list. He is leaving
off for the Reds tonight in centerfield as Cincinnati hosts the Arizona diamondback first
of three at GABP. Frankie montassis also back. Red's taking on righty
Zach Gallen. Your other roster moves. Connor Capele is up. He was

(20:11):
batting two sixty eight with seven homersat Louisville. Nick Martini has been sent
to Louisville, Bubba Thompson has beensent to Chattanooga, and Ian Jabo has
been transferred to the sixty day injuredlist. Let's see if tonight's Red's lineup
is made well thanks to Madewell restoration, Freedol and center, Elliott short Steer
and left field. Stevenson is catchingand batting fourth. Freiley is dhing Cees

(20:33):
at first base, India batting seventhat second base, Candelario is at third
base in the eighth hole, andWill Benson's in right field, batting ninth
again six forty tonight on seven hundredwl W. Joe Burrow practiced today.
He held a press conference today, and Tyler Boyd signed with the Tennessee Titans
today. Good luck to Tyler joining. Brian Callahan. Yeah, the latest

(20:56):
going down there. I mean CheetahBay Woozy a Tennessee boy. There's a
couple of coaches. Yeah. Imean when you need stuff you're doing,
if you're doing something new down thereand need somebody to install your system,
your culture, all that stuff aswell. I was gonna say, if
you can't beat them, join them. But if you can't beat them,

(21:17):
sign up. But the Titans beatthe Bengals, they did, that's true.
I like what they're doing in Tennessee. I think that they're I think
they could be good quick you gotyou got Bill Callahan and some to go
with Brian and that line that they'veput together now adding jcon Latham in there.
If Will Levis isn't great, youcan always run the ball, you

(21:38):
know what I mean? And ifyou got that to lean on, it
makes everything a lot easier for you. When's the schedule coming out? I
don't know how many times did Iget that question? A lot? I
think you know, it was thoughtthat it would be Thursday. But you
know, then when you have peoplewho work at NBC saying I don't think
it's going to be Thursday. Yeah, I tell you know that, that

(22:00):
means where they'll push it back. It's you get into this where you've got
all of these networks. There isa lot on the line for these networks
getting the right game and fighting overthese games, and then so that if
you make one adjustment, well that'sa domino that affects everything. I think
this happens every year where it's likeI don't know they're gonna get it,
and all of a sudden you snapyour fingers in there and it comes out

(22:21):
like you thought it was going to. But this one feels like it might
be different because it doesn't normally getthis late into the proceedings where we're still
wondering. Many have speculated that thefact that they're going to play on Christmas,
which is a Wednesday this year, screwing things like that's just great?
Right, of course it is,of course it is. Of course it
is Why why why are we playinggames on Wednesday? And why do we

(22:41):
have to play on Christmas? Iagree? Why are we doing this?
I agree? I just am soI'm so over all of this stuff.
The holiday. It's the first thingthat I look at when the schedule comes
out is how bad is the holidaysituation? Right? And you know,
like Christmas even Foxborough? Right, that was nice two years ago? Yeah,
well, not going to that one. I mean, look, I'm

(23:04):
here to go to every game, but you're not going to take Christmas Eve
with my kids? So I goto Foxborough. Look, man, Okay,
I do the pregame show at theHoly Grail, which is a blast.
But I'm going to have to goto the Holy Grail on Christmas morning
and solicit a divorce attorney if theBengals play at one o'clock on Christmas Day

(23:25):
and I have to announce to myfamily, to my seven year old,
Hey, uh, Santa Claus washere. Now I gotta go, sorry,
I gotta go to a pregame show. Bengals are getting ready to play
the Browns. Yeah yeah, man, I why yeah. I mean it's
just trying to take over everything, you know, and as they try to

(23:48):
also try to push, yeah, and all while trying to you know,
drop in eighteen games. How aboutwe get to that before the next CBA.
I mean, I just see footballas family unless you have a family,
and then screw you. No Christmasfor you, Christmas for you.
Yeah. So I don't know whereit lands. I am. I am
excited for it. I get excitedfor the schedule every year. I'm very

(24:10):
much ready. I love doing themock schedule. Mock schedule is one of
my favorite exercises. If you takesome of the best concert tours, some
of the best college games, knowingwhat what away games are on the Bengals
schedule, will any of them crosspaths? Potentially? I love package the
best weekend together. That's my favoritepart. And so now we'll have to

(24:30):
maybe off. Maybe we'll give memore time to really check out the landscape.
Yeah, yeah, I love.I love to pair weather with cities.
I want to visit with where theBearcats might be with what concerts might
be going on, or is alocal baseball team also going to be playing?
I like, I love to seewhat I could pair with other stuff.
Yes, the last couple of yearshas been a little bit hard for

(24:52):
me. I went to Cleveland. That was miserable. The game stunk,
the team stunk, the weather stunkCleveland, the drive back stunk. None
of that was fun. But Ipaired it with U see at Pitt which
was the high point of the Barricadseason. That was fun. It was
the high point was Yeah. SoI'm ready to see where we get.
There's some good trips. I lovethe Charlotte trip, and I enjoy Charlotte

(25:18):
as a city as a whole.Good weather potential, a lot of other
fun things to do, potential forgood college football games, and drivable distances
down there that you could hit up. So I'm I'm looking forward to that
as a potential. Where's that gonnaend up this year? Do you want
to weigh in on the big issueof the offseason. I love to do
that. What do we got leapingTiger versus strive to be at midfield.

(25:44):
I mean, it's stunning to methat there's this many leaping tiger people out
there. So as an aesthetic object, I prefer the leaping tiger to the
strip. B. I will admitthat if you put to it, if
you said you could paint one ofthese two things in your yard, I
would ask, like, why doI have to do that? But I

(26:04):
would prefer the stripe or I wouldprefer the leaping tiger to the stripe.
B. That said, when theyhad a leaping tiger on the field so
many years ago, I recall therebeing no great affection or affinity for the
leaping tiger. Suddenly this wave ofI don't know if it's nostalgia or what
it is, there's a lot ofpeople who love the leaping tiger that I

(26:27):
don't recall being especially beloved back inthe day when it was on the field
itself. Yeah, and not exactlythe most memorable of clubs with the leaping
tiger. Here's I feel like,I don't really care right what ends up
being there. I'm happy to weighin. Well, However, there's a
difference between like a preference and somethingI really care about Yeah. No,

(26:49):
here's I have an opinion on itthough, okay, and that is I
think your midfield logo is kind ofyour vision to the world of who you
are. What is your core asafraid, this is us, the Cincinnati
Banks rctory Joe Burrow. This ismy point. I went Burrow's face.
Go ahead and use the one,use the one with the glasses, whatever

(27:11):
your favorite Joe Burrow face. Justpaint Joe Burrow's face at midfield and that
is your midfield look. That ismore who you are than Leaping Tiger.
He is more of an avatar forthe Bengals than anything else. Than anything,
this is who you are. Puthis face on the field. Maybe
he could be wearing a Kroger hator whatever is whatever you're selling, or

(27:33):
maybe it's pay Corps or whatever.Maybe that's what it is, maybe you
sell it, but either way,I think that's what it is. It's
just Burrow's face at midfield. Atthis point, what is going to be
the increase of the sales tax toenhance pay Corps stadium? Is it going
to be a half percent? Thenit could be a zero point five percent
at midfield since we're going to befighting over that for the next couple of

(27:56):
years. I look forward to thatthis radio show is going to be a
say from that it is I amvowing to way out of it. Yes,
okay, yes, you have tobe able to go places where you
could just get away from stuff likethat. I will pride our show on
being that place. Yes, Iand I am, and I'm happy to
be able to walk into that safespace here because the only time I bring

(28:18):
it up is it's gonna take over, because it's gonna take over before too
long, and I mean already kindof has, but it's you're gonna get
into the thick of it here.Do you want to do a thing two
and a half months before training campwhere we look ahead to interesting camp battles
or do you want to talk aboutthe Tom Brady Roast which you did not
watch. I'll leave it up toyou. I can do either. I'm

(28:41):
happy to do either camp battles.I feel like we've got time to get
to those we do right, ButI feel like we run out of time
to talk about the Brady rows aftertoday. Okay, right here for you,
I would agree, it's your show. I carried you through the beginning
part. I was a little flustered. But but that's okay. Now now
you're back in your driver, You'reI guessed, and I want to do
things like if you have someone overyour house, you do the things that

(29:03):
they want to do that often doesn'thappen. No, I'm I'm happy to
go on whatever ride you want toput me on. If you want me
to. You want me to ridethe Tom Brady Roast, we can we
can do that. I'm here foryou. Paul's thoughts on the Roast Next
on ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station. Hey, Sarah here, Danner junior

(29:27):
of the Athletic Where you've You've publisheda couple of things that I think are
worth my listeners. While we hearduring the draft and in the immediate aftermath
of the draft, we hear fromthe head coach, we hear from the
position coach, we hear from DukeTobin. Oftentimes we usually don't get a
chance to hear from scouts, andyou got scouts to talk in great detail

(29:51):
about the players the Bengals took.I love this story every year because I
just these guys have so many storiesto tell about why players pushed up enough
for them to make to make themthe pick, because you usually the reason
they're taking them is they were justthey had them just a little bit higher
than somebody else. And it's usuallyin these details that they find over the

(30:11):
course of their years or multiple yearsscouting the plays, talking to people there
and finding out how they found thosewhat they were and why they feel like
that's what makes them a fit forthe Bengals. I always find fascinating.
And they put in so much work, so yeah, I mean, there
was a ton of good stuff inthere. You know, whether it was
Mike Pott's talking about all the tradesthey were fielding and why they didn't move

(30:33):
up, or the stories of EricAlls kind of some of the practices that
they saw of him at Iowa thatthat were really convincing to seeing the level
of play that you get from himon an everyday basis. And you know,
whether or whether you're just talking aboutJosh fig Newton, Yes, isn't
it, and we're talking about notjust he had a legendary speech, which

(30:55):
is a part of that that setoff TCU's season, but the fact that
he came. He could have beena high pick, but he felt so
much like that was his team andhe was, you know, a part
of that whole thing that that loyaltyhe felt and then made him want to
come back, and it ended uphurting him. He ended up being three
year unds later, and you hearmore about how that loyalty that he showed.

(31:18):
Maybe it hurt his stock, butit kept him up there with the
Bengals because they saw, you know, the type of team player that he
is and how much being a greatteammate meant to him, on top of
what they knew he already to havethe field. All those details kind of
pieced together the puzzle a little bitmore, I think, to kind of
put one big bow on the draftends. And then you wrote a separate
piece. But I don't think there'sa player who's gotten more scrutiny in terms

(31:41):
of all field stuff and just theprocess that went into choosing to take him
than Jermaine Burden. Yeah. Imean, to me, it was the
most fascinating question to come out ofdraft weekend, was was, Okay,
how did you get to this pointwhere you were totally comfortable for this guy
that obviously you know, was multiplerounds below what his talent is and and

(32:04):
what was that how did you dothat? And I thought, you know,
their their process of doing that andhim becoming comfortable with and then TJ.
Hushmnzada's role in at all, whotells this great story about how he's
going to announce the pick. Andhe's been close with Burton for years.
They've been working together and have reallydeveloped a close relationship. You talk about
a guy who a lot of peoplesee He'll tell you a lot of people
said a lot of things about mecoming out and probably still do, who's

(32:28):
never been afraid to be confident inhimself but still channel that onto the field.
Sees the same type of stuff thatyou could have in Burton. But
he's announcing the pick. Ye,the Bengals call Burton Burton immediate as soon
as he's done with that, hisfirst call is to TJ, who I
don't even know if he knew wasannouncing the pick. And TJ's like,
I know, bro, and heshows him the card. I gotta go

(32:50):
announce it. We can't talk rightnow. It's a great story and and
you know the fact that he isthere that first call. It didn't it
was a part of the process forthe Bengals. It certainly wasn't the whole
thing. They wouldn't take one person'sopinion. But when you've got someone that
has been working that closely, thatyou trust like you would TJ for multiple
years, you know, it doesgo a long way into feeling even more

(33:15):
comfortable. There will be or asTJ said, look, he better do
the right things off the field, because I Am going to be in his
ear about it every single day. That doesn't hurt. That doesn't hurt.
You know, they know what it'slike to have TJ in your ear every
day. Yeah, it is avery good read. Get both those pieces
and so much more at the Athleticdot Com. What do you think of

(33:36):
the roast? I think it's greatto see everyone feeling uncomfortable about what's going
to be said about Bill Belichick andTom Brady and Robert Kraft. It's like
these figures that have they've all feltvery untouchable. These and super you know,
on a different wavelength than the restof us. They're immune to your
normal sports conversation because of all thetitles. Yet for the first time here

(33:58):
they all were in the same roomand everyone just chopping each other down by
the knees like I'm here for thatwith that tension just hovering over the entire
event from its beginning. That's oneof the dynamics that made that just great
television. Yeah, and I meanalso the fact that it was live,
because there's a lot of stuff thatif it wasn't hits the cutting room floor,

(34:19):
well, right, because you're gonnasay if you watch it later,
like, oh what got edited out? Bro? What there? It all
is? There? It all was, including a lot of people looking uncomfortable.
But I immensely enjoyed it, andmaybe Tom I feel like Tom Brady's
goal in this was to make himselfbe like a person, you know,
like he's he worked trying to getinto media. It worked, and he's

(34:42):
never felt like a real person, right, and now it's like, okay,
everyone has now pointed and laughed atme. Can I be a real
person in the media now? Andso if that's what he was going for,
good version. Think of athletes ofthat stature that rare air. You
think Michael Jordan's gonna let his peersdo that? No, I think Tiger
Woods is. You think Lebron LebronJames might be more likely than the others,

(35:06):
but probably not do you think likea Derek Jeter's doing that? No,
No, so the fact that hedid that, and just when you
do that, you're basically allowing yourselfto be made fun of, which not
a lot of people do, especiallyin that stratosphere. I just think it's
awesome. Yeah, No, Itotally agree, and I hope it.
I hope it feels like it helpedhim. I don't know. I I

(35:30):
certainly enjoyed it. If you couldhave one person subject themselves to what Tom
Brady did that you have covered orbeen around, who would it be,
Oh my god, you pulling thatout on me? Yeah, the last
second? One person? One.I don't know. That's a hard one,
you know. I'm tempted to sayChad because there's so many stories out

(35:54):
there, or maybe t O justbecause there's so many, But they already
kind of do that like they're they'revery much an open book. Carson Palmer
just only former Bengals. Yeah,to be there, I don't know,
I mean how many, I don'tknow. Maybe that would be one,

(36:15):
Marvin, maybe Marvin maybe. Imean, I don't know, I'd be
here. I'd be here for thatfollow go ahead, I know, I
don't I don't you mean think aboutthat. I'll have to think about that.
