Speaker 1 (00:01):
ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati's sports station, Cincinnati's sports station.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Sports headlines are a service at Kelsey chevrol A home
up lifetime powertrain protection and guarantee credit approval from their
family to yours for life, Kelsey chev dot Com. No
game for the Reds. They're in New York, first of
three against the Yankees tomorrow, evening night game on Friday,
which is tomorrow, and day games on Saturday and on Sunday.
(00:34):
I totally lost my other sports headlines. I'm a disorganized man.
I'm not gonna lie to you totally. I can make
it up. I do know that Checchia and South Africa
finished one to one in the World Cup today. I
got that for you. I know the Florence Yawls played
a game at one o'clock this afternoon that may or
may not be over. It's against Schomberg, and I would
(00:54):
be willing to bet that a good seventy five to
eighty percent of my audience is just waiting to find
out what the score of that game was. And I
promise I will get it to you after we talk
with our French had Brendall Bearkat Journal dot com. I
wanted to bring him in to talk about the the
Brendan Soorsby situation. It's it's awesome to have you. I
(01:14):
have I've resisted doing this for the last number of weeks,
though I have enjoyed thoroughly watching your back and forth
with Texas Tech people. But I thought you could give me,
I think, good perspective on the news in the last
twenty four hours what Brendan Soorsby agent has had to say.
My basic takeaway is that if, if what this guy
(01:36):
says is true, it ought to be pretty easy for
him to prove so in the absence of him doing that,
I'm just really taking what he says with a large
grain of salt. How about yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It was nice to officially put a name to one
of the unnamed sources in the USA Today article from
two months ago, so that was good. Is already keeps
reference in that and I was told two months ago
(02:08):
that he was shopping that around for any takers. And
it just so happened that a writer that had been
very friendly with Cody Campbell over the past couple of
years at Texas Tech is the one that took debate.
You're right, like, okay, if you got proof let's see it.
Because my stance is pretty simple on this. If Cincinnati
(02:31):
hid this and covered it up, then everybody involved should
be fired, because that's again, I can't have the take
I have on Soresby and not hold Cincinnati to that
same standard. But there has been zero indication in two
months that Cincinnati knew anything more than he tried to
(02:54):
log onto Prize Picks in twenty twenty four. Prize Picks
got pro had that shut it down. It didn't happen.
Cincinnati went through the exact process of what is to
happen when you get one of these alerts. They executed
it by the book, because that's who John Cunningham and
(03:14):
his department is. And I don't think there's anything there's
no leg to stand on other than Cincinnati had an
inkling and then they were lied to by Brendan Soresby,
who is not getting near enough heat in this. I
to it to a certain degree. I understand why. But
(03:35):
if his camp is going to start throwing people under
the bus, okay, then let's really talk about what it is.
Cincinnati didn't screw Texas Tech. Indiana didn't screw Texas Tech.
The NCAA didn't screw Texas Tech. Brendan Soresby did, and
it's time to hold him accountable for the mistakes that
(03:55):
he's made. It's my take.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
It's going to be interesting. Yeah, and I agree. Look,
Brendan Sorosby's pursuing a professional career, good for him, whatever,
But at some point there's gonna be a camera or
a microphone in front of him and someone is going
to ask him who knew what? And so like that's
that's that's the next one for me, all right. So
if if the agent says, uh, Cincinnati knew, my question is,
(04:20):
give me some evidence in the absence of that. When
Brendan Sorosby speaks, somebody should ask him, and I would
imagine somebody will, uh did did Was anybody at you
see aware that you were breaking NCAA rules? If if
he doesn't provide names, or if he doesn't say yes
and offers some degree of evidence as to who knew
(04:41):
what and when, then again all of this goes away
as far as I'm concerned.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Yeah, and guess what if he gets approved for the
supplemental Draft, He's gonna have a pro day coming up
here sometime in the next couple of weeks. Right. If
he has that pro day, he's gonna have Mike phones
in front of the space and at some point in
time he's going to have to answer to Brendan, who knew,
(05:09):
When did they know? How much did you know? What
lengths did you go to to keep this from everybody?
Because again that's another thing we're not talking about. Let's
say Cincinnati, when they got the Prohibet alert, they took
his phone and they searched his phone. They wouldn't have
(05:30):
found anything because he was a gambling addict and he
knew better than to use his own phone. So what
I asked this last week I was on with I
really enjoyed the guys that sick them three sixty five
and they had me on to talk through this whole thing,
and I said, Okay, let's say your belief is Cincinnati
(05:54):
should have done more when they got the alert from Prohibet.
What more could they have done? They didn't catch him gambling,
he wasn't placing bets and got shut down. He got
shut down at the front door of Prize Picks trying
to log in. What should Cincinnati have done? Now, if
(06:14):
you want to say, mo college sports money involved private
investigators that the NFL hires private investigators regularly to look
into any questionable situations on potential players. If you're going
to tell me, okay, Cincinnati should have hired a private investigator,
(06:35):
that's not how it's ever been done in college sports before.
If this is a cautionary tale that maybe it should be,
I'll listen to that. But what exactly would and could
Cincinnati have done after they got the alert? They bring
Bretnden Soresby into compliance, he lies to them about his intentions,
(06:58):
and then they put him through education. What else? What
were the steps that Cincinnati missed. That's what I'm waiting
for somebody to tell me.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
And I'm waiting for I'm waiting for there to be
some reporting that the nc double A is quote sniffing around.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Now.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
I'm sure there have been foot calls between people that
you see in the NCUBA, but those things tend to
either get reported on, you know, if we're talking about
a serious you know, notice of allegation investigation, and then
eventually there is a notice of allegation that's made public.
And so we haven't seen any of those things. So
I guess my basic question is how do NCAA investigations work,
(07:37):
and is there any reason to believe that the NCAA
is sniffing around for something that his agent alleges happen
without evidence.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
If the NCUBA was involved, the Committee on Impractions would
be involved, because that's who investigates the schools, like, that's
the arm of the nc DOUBLEA that if there are
if there's cheating or whatever going on into school, the
Committee on Infractions puts together a case. They make a
(08:08):
notice of allegations. The school has ninety days I think
it is to respond to the notice of allegations, and
then they go into, you know, kind of the punishment
phase of this process. There's been zero indication from the
nc DOUBLEA that the Committee on Infractions is involved in
this case, and that tells me, at least to this point,
(08:32):
there has been nothing that has put Cincinnati in the
crosshairs of the NCUBA on this case. And guess what,
mo If Cincinnati knew and the NCUBA had any evidence
at all that Cincinnati knew and they covered it up
and they played Brendan storesby anyway, the NC DOUBLEA would
(08:54):
be so far up Cincinnati's you know what, there'd be
two off satellite offices Clifton. Am I wrong? Like that
that's the Cardinals, right, the cardinal rule. If the nc
DOUBLE has any ingry that Cincinnati covered this up, they
would since would be getting the NCAA version of a
(09:15):
colonoscopy right now.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
You are right? I mean, this isn't tattoos that, This
isn't you know, well a guy had a shaky act
test you know, test score that this is this is
the rule, This is the one. This is the integrity rule.
Like and I've I've tried to make that point again
and again, and I haven't gone back and forth with
people from Texas Tech to the degree that you have.
But I mean, like I keep saying that, like, you
(09:39):
mean to tell me this this the rule, especially in
this climate, the rule, the rule that points directly toward
competitive integrity. You you mean to tell me that if
there was even a shred, a shred of evidence or
a strong insinuation that that U see had done something
wrong here, that there wouldn't be two dozen p people
(10:00):
from the NCAA on campus almost every single.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Day, immediately interviewing everybody, turning over every rock, Like there's
it's not even debatable, Like the Texas Tech I that's
it's as bad as I've ever experienced a fan base
that has gone into some level of delusion that that
(10:23):
doesn't make any sense to me. But they're not out
to get you Texas Tech fans. They are trying to
get to the bottom of what happened. And if part
of what happened was Cincinnati knowing that Brendan Sorosby was
breaking rules by the thousands, covered it up and still
played him, the hammer would be four size that they
(10:49):
would drop on Cincinnati in that instance.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Do you think he was that good? Here? The football part,
to me is is fascinating because I I I certainly
would have allowed for the possibility that a year in
college at Texas Tech he would have improved, he would
have gotten better, he would have gone, you know, good coaching,
and you know then would have found himself at the
top of the NFL draft. Do you believe that the
(11:17):
assessments of him are a little inflated relative to what
you watched him do on the field for two years.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Here's what worries me the most about Brendan Soorsby. If
I'm an NFL executive, Brendan Soorsby was very, very good
in games where he had a decided talent advantage, or
he had even let's say he was really really good
and a lot of the games where the talent was
(11:44):
close or Cincinnati was advantaged. If you go back to
last year, and I kind of got mad at myself
because I think I started this narrative that Brendan Sorosby's
struggle his struggles were related to teams playing band a
man defense. But the more the time went on, I
don't think it was his struggles related to mand de
(12:07):
man defense. It's that his struggles related to when they
played really good teams. You know, Nebraska had a great
pass defense last year, he was terrible. He's terrible. Arizona
great pass defense. Last year, he was terrible. BYU. He
(12:30):
had a little bit of success against BYU, like that
wasn't of the games they played against good teams, that
was probably his best. But then Utah great pass defense,
he was terrible. If you go back to the year before,
when they came down the stretch, those were the hardest
games on the schedule, he didn't perform well when the
stakes were high. Brendan Soorsby's play was often below what
(12:55):
you would expect from a big time NFL quarterback. I
don't know, Mo, that I want my quarterback being a
guy that shows up for the noon Saturday games, but
the three point thirty and seven o'clock games. You got
to ask where he's that.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Yeah, I think that's I think that's well put. While
I have you, I saw you today at basketball practice.
I stayed for fifteen minutes, then I had to go
to lunch. What did I miss? What have you seen?
What gets you excited about year one under Jared Calhoun.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
I think it's a very interesting team. I've really been
a fan, even more so than I thought I was
going to be of Jaden Hastings. Maybe this will make
more sense in November, but watching that kid in June,
I have no idea how he only averaged six points
in five rebounds of Boston College best year. That doesn't
(13:52):
make any sense to me. Watching the way that that
kid moves, how hard he works, how aggressive he is,
I've been really impressed, and he's kind of been the
guy that stepped into like a leadership role over the
first couple of weeks. So I like what I've seen
from him and Mo, I'm I'm really excited about this
(14:15):
group that they have for the three and four position,
from Miles Colvin to Eric Maheite to Tyler Tahada to
Adlin Elamine who he goes by Addie Addie, so a
little easier there that you don't have to say ad
Lan all the time. But but I think those guys
(14:37):
have a chance to be, you know, one of the
better groups in the Big twelve. On the wing, I
think the big question is going to be how good
are they at guard? Tyler Riley, Elijah Perriman, h Tradon Carson,
who I think I'm I'm really gonna like in terms
of his toughness and his defense, and then a Kyle Fleming.
(15:00):
I think that's going to be the deciding factor on
how good this team can be if they can get
good guard play. I think Jared Calhoun's got a really
fun bunch at the top, and practice has been enlightening.
Let's just say that, did you hear more assistance talk
in your fifteen minutes than you did in the rest
(15:22):
of the past five years?
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Maybe a lot different? Yes, completely different, completely different, Like
you actually noticed them, you saw them teaching, you saw
them talking, you saw them coaching. Decidedly different.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
I've always wondered, Mo, And I'm glad I've gotten to
see this because I've always wondered. In basketball, you hear like, well,
this guy's an offensive coach and he's got a defensive coordinator.
What does a defensive coordinator look like in basketball? And
watching the last two weeks, now I get it, Like
the head coach, did you notice this moment? You know
(15:59):
what Jared Callhen did. Didn't have today in his hands.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
I didn't notice a whistle.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
A whistle does not have a whistle. It's in his pocket.
He pulls it out as absolutely necessary, but he lets
his assistance coach. He lets those guys do their job.
And watching Manny Robinson and watching Johnny Hill instruct the defense,
(16:26):
you're like, Oh, that's what it would look like in
basketball if you had a defensive coordinator. It's been very
interesting the first couple of weeks to watch.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Awesome stuff. Man, appreciate you doing this. We'll do it
again soon.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
We won't because I am you for the next week,
so you enjoy vacation, my friend.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
I definitely will thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Thank you, Mo.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
That's our guy. Chad Brendle hosting this show tomorrow and
most of next week bearkad journal dot com. By the
way I got it for as Schomberg leads Florence seven
to four, the Yawls are on the roads are in
the They're in the bottom of the sixth inning, trailing
seven to four. There's also speaking of Bearcat basketball. This
just came down. You see in Arkansas are gonna play
(17:14):
as part of a summer exhibition tour at the Baja
Mar Resort, which is gonna be in the Bahamas. Arkansas
and Cincinnati. Hang on, I I gotta, I gotta do this.
For the first time I mentioned this to Austin, I
have I have put on my readers and and now
I now I can read this. The Razorbacks are gonna play.
(17:37):
I don't care about the Razorbacks. One of the Bearcat games,
Cincinnati will compete on Sunday, August second, and on Tuesday,
August fourth. You see will play twice during their sixth
day visit to the Baja Maar Resort. All games will
take place at the Baja Mar Convention Arts and Entertainment Center. Opponents,
including international teams and Canadian universities, will be announced later.
(17:59):
If if we need somebody to cover this, I'm I'm
I'm happy to be the guy go to the Bahamas
in early August. That wouldn't suck. All right, there you go.
You are up to date, six away from four o'clock.
We got room five, one, three, seven, four, nine. Fifteen thirty,
let's go back to Joe Burrow. Remember what Joe Burrow
does and doesn't do? Next on ESPN fifteen thirty. Cincinnati's
